Weekly Report & Newsletter J36 Monthly Machinery Sale The monthly Machinery Sale at J36 saw a large crowd of buyers in attendance from throughout the Northern, Eastern and Midland counties. With over 400 lots offered there was certainly something for everyone. Highlights include a NH TS100A selling for £17,650, Kevernland 4F Plough £5250, Amazone Power Harrows £4700, L200 Truck £3150. Seasonal equipment attracted keen interest with sheep feeders £600, £340, creep feeders £170 and lamb adopters £195. Next sale at J36 is on Wednesday 25th March. Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 27th February Another strong entry of Cast Cows with 82 cows forward, comprising of only 3 beef cows. Trade was significantly stronger than last week, averaging 126.2ppk, some 15ppk up on other local centres. Topping the sale at 179.5ppk was a stabiliser bull from JA & R Geldard & Sons, Levens. Top gross of the day came from GA & A Atkinson & Son, Cantsfield with a Friesian cow selling to £1391. Dairy hefiers sold to a top of 169.5ppk from JB & JB Lawson, Cockerham and J, CH & JG Bland, Silverdale. Dairy cows sold to a top of 149.5ppk from JM & A Wallbank, Wray, Lawsons Farm, Cockerham & E & N Wright & Sons, Roeburndale. Dairy cows in general much sharper with well fleshed cows’ 137-149ppk and plainer sorts 117-131ppk with boning cows above the 100ppk mark. The better trade here at Lancaster far outweighs the cost of a Tb pre-movement test. All classes of cows in demand again next Friday.

A reduced entry of Store Cattle this morning were met by a ringside of active buyers. Trade for all classes was similar to last week, with quality a touch less. Topping the day was a Limousin steer at 27month from Cowell & Moore, Woodplumpton, selling for £1480. Closely followed by a pen of four Limousin bullocks around the 24month realising £1430 from H Champman & Son, Middleton. Angus bullocks sold to £1280 from TC Whiteside & Son, Pilling. Heifers sold to £1240 for a single Charollais from W & J Parkinson, Garstang. Trade for B&W store was similar for older sorts, with younger sorts a fraction less, selling to £1150 from A & E Clarkson. Overall average of £1015 for bullocks and £972 for heifers.

A strong entry of Calves this morning with trade comparable to last week. Topping the calves was AJ & AJ Gibbons with a Blue Bull at 6weeks realising £470. Other Blue bulls from S & IA Robinson, Burton in Lonsdale realised £465 (x2). Blue heifers sold to £450 at 8weeks from the same home. Angus calves sold to £405 for a nice heifer from RT Halhead, Cockerham. Limousin heifers sold to £340 again from Steven Robinson and £310 from Ben Towers of Tunstall Hall. Younger Angus bull calves sold to £172 & £170 at only 15-18days from Messers Jones, Sandvilla. Friesian calves not quite as fast on the week, selling to £152 from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green. Others to £108 again from JH Towers & Son. Younger fleshier sorts £50-£80. Overall average of £62 for all Friesians forward. A flying trade for all Stirks forward today selling to £605 for a trio of 5month Blue heifers from A Shepherd, Pilling. Blue bulls, the same age, sold to £600. A younger 4month blue bullock to £580 from A & L Gardner, Quernmore. More stirks urgently required to meet the increasing demand. Winning the Dugdale Nutrition Calf Competition for the highest price calf under 6weeks for February was AJ & AJ Gibbons with a 41day old Blue Bull selling for £470 to J Townson.

Monday 2nd March Prime Hoggs sold to a dearer trade averaging 12 pence up on the previous week. The market average was 198ppk with SQQ hoggs averaging 200ppk. An entry of 427 forward saw all classes of hoggs in strong demand and keenly bid for especially inside fed and well finished hoggs. Better types of hoggs sold around 210ppk topping at 213ppk from J Bargh & Son of North Farm.

A reduced number of Cast Sheep forward today sold to a continued good trade. Texel tups sold to a top of £140 with Charollais’ to £135 from P Lawrenson, Brindle. Continental ewes sold around the £100 mark with fit mule ewes selling into the nineties.

Lancaster Sale Reports The weekly sale of Breeding Sheep at Lancaster had an entry of 71 families forward selling to once again a ring full of active buyers. Texel Shearlings with twins sold to a top price of £242 a family from M Sutcliffe of Tarn Farm with Texel singles from the same home selling to £182. Older Texel ewes sucking strong Texel twins sold to £227 with single lambs topping at £190 from Peter and Susan Robinson of Claughton on Brock. Aged mule ewes sucking young twin lambs from D Miller of Cobble Hey sold to £194 with other pens of aged mule ewes selling in the £180’s. Mules sucking singles sold to £158 from Peter Anderton of Scorton. An overall average of £71 per head including a lot of older sheep and young lambs.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 26th February The weekly sale of Calves, saw an entry of 36 forward. All classes once again keenly bid for. Black and whites continue to now sell to a consistent trade at J36 with good rearing types to £145 twice from ML & SM Dobson of Espford Farm. Older weaned Black and Whites sold to £290 from TK Robinson & Son of Greaves Farm, with others from the same home selling to £210 and £160. All Black and Whites sold to an average of £89 with majority small calves selling £30 plus. Plenty of beef calves on offer with something to suit every buyers’ needs. Weaned British Blue bulls sold to £400 from TK Robinson & Son of Greaves Farm, who sold British Blue heifers to £400. Younger beef calves in demand with British Blue Bulls to £305 from J Hoggarth & Son of Manor House.

The opening monthly sale of Stirks had a smaller entry than hoped for, although the sale had attracted plenty of interest from buyers far and wide. The buyers around the ring were looking to purchase all types of stirks. Angus steers sold to a top of £590 from R Cowin of Kirkby Lonsdale, who also sold six month old Flekvieh steers to £540 and £525. Heifers were keenly sought, selling to a top of £580 for Limousins from B Butterfield & Son of Moss House Farm. A mixed entry of Black and Whites ranging between 3 and 5 months old sold to a top of £310 from MH & AR Robinson of Holmescales.

A very mixed quality show of Store Hoggs as the store sheep season now nears its end. Short keep hoggs carrying flesh sold to £64 plus, topping at £71 from J & H Bland & Son Ltd of Ninezergh for Suffolks. Medium keep lambs sold around the sixty pound mark with Rough Fells selling to £63.50 from James Potter of Low Stead. Store hoggs sold to an overall market average of £56.42.

Empty mule gimmer hoggs selling to £88 and empty texel hoggs to £93. Mule gimmer in lamb shearlings sold to a top of £160 from Dalton Old Hall with other pens of in lamb mule gimmer shearlings selling between £140 and £155.

A top price of £98 achieved, again from F G & G C L Stephenson Ltd. Hill hoggs sold to £90 for Cheviot x from L A & M Lambert with SBF £87.50 from S & M Cooper. An SQQ average of 191p/kg saw a rise from last week with all types selling to full value.
