Changes to sheep identification and recording from 1st January 2015 From 1st January 2015 all sheep over 12 months old which move from your holding must have an individual number as well as the flock (UK) mark on the tag * Unless you remain the keeper** (the sheep are remaining in your day to day supervision and control) the individual numbers of sheep over 12 months of age moving to another holding (including “green” markets) must be recorded in the holding register* If your sheep are EID and moving through a CPRC (market) the ID numbers may be read at the market and supplied to you within 48 hours for inclusion in your register, however you as keeper are responsible for the accuracy of information held in your flock registers - including missing / incomplete information or discrepancies. If your sheep are not electronically tagged a CPRC will not be able to read and pass any ID information back to you. You as keeper will be responsible for manually reading the tag numbers before departure, recording them in full in your register and passing that information to the destination keeper by recording it in full on the movement documentation. Alternatively, for ease of management and recording of sheep over 12 months of age, you may choose to replace “old style” plastic tags with “full EID” (double) tags. If the sheep was born on your holding you may apply a yellow EID tag with coloured match up tag, if the sheep was not born on your holding you must apply a RED EID and match up tag. When you remove a tag for re-identification you must record the numbers on the tag you remove in your register and cross reference this to the replacement number used. * These rules do not apply to sheep tagged before 2010 which are moving direct to an abattoir or slaughter collection which may be recorded by the number of animals in the register and movement document. ** If you remain the keeper, sheep moving from a holding can be recorded in the register and movement document by the number moving with no reference to ID on the document or register If you are unsure about what to do contact Cumbria Trading Standards Animal Health team who will be pleased to advise, phone 01539 713137 email animalmovements@cumbria.gov.uk or speak to the animal health inspector on duty at the market.
