Introduction
cracking reading ... Our books are designed to minimize obstacles for dyslexic or less experienced readers. We use off-white paper and our own special font to minimize visual stress. Our special editing makes our books ‘high-low’, which means that the interest age (IA) is appropriate to the actual age of the reader but the reading age (RA) is lower.

We know that our approach works because so many parents, teachers and children have told us so: “To hear my child reading out loud to herself without my assistance was the most wonderful thing ever. It has really boosted her confidence and she is so proud of herself.” “You have helped open a door which we thought was firmly bolted shut for years to come.” “I have raved to everyone who will listen about your books.” We think it’s important that our books look like mainstream fiction, so there’s no indication on the jacket of the fact that our books are special.

How we do it
How We Do It: Cracking Reading About our design techniques: ➔➔ Off-white paper helps to reduce visual stress, which experts estimate as affecting 15-20% of the population ➔➔ No right-hand justification to help prevent readers losing their place in the text ➔➔ Good quality paper reduces distracting show-through from backing pages ➔➔ Dyslexia-friendly font gives each character a clear and distinct shape ➔➔ Carefully calculated leading and kerning help readers to see the shape of individual letters and words
Close-up...
Stoke Books help emergent, reluctant and dyslexic readers unlock a love of reading. Our books are crammed with ingenious design and editorial tricks to ensure an accessible read. Best of all, the books are brilliant stories by the best authors in the business, and so also offer a great quick read for more confident kids.

How we do it
“You have helped to turn a reluctant reader into a voracious one.” Parent
About our editing techniques: ➔➔ Short length allows struggling readers to feel a sense of achievement at having finished a book ➔➔ Plenty of chapter breaks offer natural “breathing space” ➔➔ Cliff-hangers and lots of action motivate strugglers to read on ➔➔ We know that our readers have little experience of literary convention and edit books to ensure this is not an obstacle, for example: ensuring flashbacks are clearly sign posted ➔➔ We edit the language to be accessible, with consideration of the specific needs of at-risk readers
Keep in touch and get involved... You can find out more about us from our website, www.stokebooks.com. “A friend showed me your books and I wanted to say how thankful I am to you! My 8 year old is dyslexic, and the key problem was the fact that she had to read much younger interest age for her ability and therefore got no pleasure from reading. I read to her every night and we have gone through hundreds of books, so she is book friendly, but we couldn’t stimulate her. Yours are brilliant... superb progress.” Parent “My son, 11, is very concerned about what others think of him and insists on ploughing through reading books that his classmates read. Your books have great titles and covers so his classmates can’t fail to be impressed.” Parent “we sat down and my son read us all the first chapter before he went to bed last night. I was then woken by the alarm this morning and headed downstairs to find my son on the sofa with the book just finishing the last chapter. He was full of the joy that reading and enjoying a book can give you.” Parent “... he stayed in the library and read, walked out to the car with his nose buried in your book and walked straight indoors, laid on the sofa and didn’t move until he’d finished it... promptly looking up and saying ‘can we go back to the library and get some more.’ Thank you for helping a little boy to love books!” Parent “Thought you might like to know that I spoke to my cousin yesterday, who told me that Stoke books have, almost literally, saved her dyslexic child’s reading life. Having rejected all books, he now seizes on yours and asks for more. Thank you.” Parent
