Candy Factory Today, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, in a period of relative austerity, many high streets are in palpable decline and markets are being forced to reinvent themselves to reflect the changing needs and interests of the local community, as well as the curiosities of casual visitors. This project is to design a Community (Trade) Hub, which will act as a catalyst for the reinvigoration of the site, and as a kind of social condenser for the local, and wide community. The Community (Trade) Hub should be corresponding to a category of artefact (or a service) which can be produced, bought, sold or exchanged in your building.

CANDY FACTORY

ABOUT SITE South Bank is an area of incredible history, architecture, culture and regeneration. Originally isolated and defined by the Thames, for centuries this riverside location developed in a very different way from the affluent north bank. A marshy expanse of slum housing and country estates; a rural haven of green fields and pleasure gardens; a dynamic hub of industry and manufacturing; a nucleus of nineteenth-century theatre and entertainment venues; a host to the largest railway terminus in the country; and a byword for post-war cultural restoration. South Bank is now home to great national centresfor art and culture, a vibrant and growing community and some of London’s finest achievements in architecture, such as the National Theatre and London Eye.

The site is opposite to the Thames River and near a park which provide the site a good views. The main access for the building is at the front

FACTORY TO MARKET

2017

This project is a trade hub of candies which is aimed to be an attraction for South Bank and encourage contact, interaction and cohesion between the various user groups. This idea is inspired by the case of Shanghai M&M’s world of chocolate which is very successful to bring considerable economy profits for its site and act as one of main attraction of Lujiazui area of Shanghai. In my project, I design a more varies kind of spaces such as visual producing plants, experience rooms for public, open market spaces, wishing to attract members of public by the the opportunity to share in the making, buying, selling, and learning about the candymaking or other activities housed there.

Research of Machinery

Design Portfolio

At the beginning of design, researches related to the candy production is very important because it can help to realize the whole process and define the specific spaces needed in the building. Firstly, I need to know the production line of candy to arrange each space. Secondly, the type and sizes of machinery should be clear in order to know how large each space needed.

• The desired quantity of sugar and glucose are weight and put into kettle and dissolved. • The dissolved mixture is sent by feeding pump into the vacuum cooker where it is cooked. • The cooked mixture is placed on the cooling table. • A worker adds food coloring, organic acid, and spices into the cooker mixture on the cooling table. • The mixture is then moved into the batch roller where it is formed into sticks. • It is then sent through the sizing roller and stretched to the specified size.

• The conveyor moves the formed candy to the cooling conveyor where it is cooled for a specified period of time. • The finished products are sent through the automatic wrapping machine, which wraps each piece individually. • The packed hard candy is forwarded to the automatic scales for weighing. A worker places packing bags on the output side of the automatic scales. • Finally, the candy is heat sealed and ready for saling.

According to researches on candy production process, I found that the main categories of candies which I want to produce and sell in the building have similar process and some of their machines and also be shared. That lead to my first idea --- a visual vertical factory in the center of building and it comes to be the heart of the building. Other spaces such as exhibition, workshop spaces, café are arranged around the central factory. All the people in different rooms can see the factory directly.

Candy Plant Journey

2017

There’s several main parts in my design: exhibition space, laboratory, experience area, staff working space, cafe and the most important --central manufacturing area. Public spaces are mostly arranged on the ground floor and second floor. The ground floor is the most open area for social activities such as trading. The visitors can go through among the shops freely and get sightseeing of the huge “vertical producing machine” in the center of the building.

Site Plan

1. Cut off a corner of the building to lead people go around the building. People who go through the park will see the building. in addition, the people at the street side will have more views of Thames river. 2. Make the east side which is near the garden open in order to attrack more people come into the building. 3. Switch the location of some of the spaces. Put the spaces which are more public and social to the east side and the spaces which are more functional and private to the west side (beside an existing building)

35

4. Design the landscape beside the building to provide access view and space allocation 5. The private part include the staff work space(offices, equipment and power department, changing room, staff lounge, storage) and a candy laboratory on the second floor. The staff work space are at the back of the building which is more quite. 6. All the public circulation area are around the inner part of the building in order to make people get closed to the candy factory and enjoy the inner views.

The X-factor “white noise” in sound is the starting point of this case, using venetian blinds as a medium to connect the X-elements in various environments, trying to reverse these X-factors that are often ignored and unknown in life. Creating a sound Experiential space intertwined with vision.

During the exhibition period, the blinds may be damaged or damaged due to human or natural factors. If there is any damage, the spare parts can be replaced immediately. The blinds are easy to install and can be quickly installed and used. No professional Tools and manpower, in case of emergency weather and weather conditions, the dispatcher can pull the curtain sling to retract the blinds into the curtain box. Build Steel Truss
