RELATION What I am always concern about is to bridge relations. The relation between people: to cater for people’s behaviours and encourage social activities in public area or protect privacy in personal area. The relation between people and space: to make different individuals feel acceptable and welcomed so that their behaviours can occur spontaneously. The relation between space and environment: to create a proper atmosphere to promote a certain kind of feeling so to encourage certain behaviour. In this way, a special spirit can grow and form a unique impression. So, in my portfolio, every project reflects my thinking on these things, and presents certain or all kinds of relations to achieve the special needs.

01. DEATH IS NOT THE END. BEING FORGOTTEN IS.

Time: 2016 Programme: International conceptual competition Teammates: Zeng WuJingTing, Ma ZhiRuo, Gong KuiYu Responsibilities: Concept, Modeling ( Rhino ), Technical drawings ( CAD ), Diagrams ( Illustrator, Photoshop ) This project explores a new way of dealing with the spatial constrain for urban cemeteries while expressing a u n i q u e a p p ro a c h t o l i f e a n d death. By having the balloons as a medium for coffin storage, we utilize the vertical space by having balloons that gradually rise up and eventually fly off. The appearing and disappearing of balloons resonate with the temporality of life.Departing f ro m t h e d e p re s s i n g s i l e n c e i n traditional cemeter y design, we propose a new space of tranquility created by a tower of rising balloons. The site under study is situated at an intersection of Shinjuku’s many components. At the edge of the Kabukicho district and against the r a i l w a y s c o m i n g f ro m S h i n j u k u Station, the site sits in close visual proximity to the towering skyscraper district. The site affords a few edges yet freely opens up for interpretation on most fronts. It also has prominent visual access from multiple locations in the vicinity, especially along the large promenade of Yasukuni Dori, which runs adjacent to the site. Yasukuni Dori provides easy access to the site along with the many metro lines that come in and out of the Shinjuku Station. As a result of this programmatic blend, it is perfectly an ideal site for a testing about creating a relation between the realm of the living and the resting place of the dead.

CONTRAST : When designing a vertical cemetery, if we simply stack tombs one upon another, it would result in many towering tombstones in the city. By using balloons to carry coffins, the vertical space is occupied in a more tranquil and sustainable way.

SCENARIOS

OBLIVION : When someone is completely forgotten and no one comes to commemorate, her/his balloon will be completely released and travels to the sky.

OBSERVATION : As a deceased person is gradually forgotten, her/his balloon rises higher and higher above the ground and eventually becomes par t of the city landscape seen by people around.

MEMORIALďźš Every time families and friends come to commemorate the person, the counting down mechanism pauses and the balloon stops rising. BURIAL : When a person dies, his/her ashes is placed in a balloon on the site by families and friends. Meanwhile, the mechanism buried underground starts counting down as the balloon rises.

Time: Jnue. 2015 Programme: Graduation design project Tutor: Liu Xiao Xiao , Cai Wei Individual work Responsibilities: Concept, 3D modeling(sketchup), Technical Drawing (sketcup, CAD), Diagram(Illustrator, Photoshop), Report(Indesign). This project is tr ying to analyse how to balance the por tion of the keeping par t and the newly contruction in order to achieve the demand for the new function. During the whole process, the most effort was given to re-render the original atmosphere and take the best use of the grant space which use to contain gigantic machines. So that, each workshop has taken different measure to deal with. By inserting different scale and forms of steel structure, a new hierachy grow and varying experiences are supplied.

CURRENT SITUATION

The workshop has maintained a well-organised columnn system to hold the steel trusses, leaving a nearly 20 meter high space with beautiful light effect. Three controll rooms stand in the middle, 3 meter above the ground, somehow form a sense of double level, the below and the above. A bridge goes through the workshop connect both side of the outdoor space, and its nice concrete finish provide it a very strong sence of mass. Part of the walls were constructed of brick, some are red with the most of the others are grey.

13

CONCEPT A building is like our hunman body, when it gets old and ffinally being dysfunction, a proper cure treatment can help it to recover effectively. For those totally functionally defective, new components need to be placed to reactivite the function. In this way, varies of new demand can be supplied and the space can get well use. For some of the environment, some basic but straightfarward method can also cure this site physiclly and functionally. Like flatening the gound, rasing part of the floor, inserting double floor ect.

CURRENT SITUATION This site maintianed a series of nice high space, and the light from the high window provide a strong sense of deepth, helping to get a very pleasant feel. Meanwhile the complexity condition leave a lot prablems need to well consider and proper deal with.

PLAN: Generally, most of the structure have been kept and some lanscape have been introduced into the indoor space both first floor and second floor to provide a more pleasant feel. Inorder to supply different sence of the space to meet the atmosphere of the theme in the museum, different scale have also been arranged deliberately. Long corridor with low ceiling, having the light from the gound which takes use of the sunken space, forming the theme that present the time when under Janpanese bombing. while large space with full high ceiling has been used as exhibition area to meet the changing demand. As the same, space for different function has different size.

VIEWING TOWER This tower is mean to supply a vertical connection to provide an opportunity to climb up to the roof.. Wihle stepping upwards, the sense of the space will also change, then it become possible to imagine what the workers of the factory can see. An opening on the top of the tower provide another kind of lighting experience when visitors of the museum walk into the bottom and sense a feel of hope.

AUDITORIUM There use to be a huge machine here, so when design the auditorium hall, an idea of big box that represeat the machine come out. eight column lift this gigantic component above the ground to create an exhibition space underneath. When people come in this hall with this big monster jump into their face, this is how worker can feel in their daily work. In order to test a more playful lighting effect. a series of square panels are created.

21

CENTRAL CONTAINER In the main workshop, a container like system has been introduced. This huge container has been lifted at the same height with the bridge, to create a gound above the ground. Under it, whole space has been enclosed, only with light coming from the bottom. While the ceiling of this container has three openning that pointing to the controlling room, each openning has a semi-transparent structure hanging down to bring in the light.

The both long side wall and the new ground are divided into small square unit with varying height. In this way, a sense of hill has been created. three remaing controlling room become part of the landscape.

22

STUDIOS

In this sigle height workshop. A design of box system has been introduced, this equally arranged space can be divided into small square unit and rearrange for different use. A specical detail of the ceiling leaving a samll gap inbetween each square unit filled with glass to let light come in.

FINAL PERFORMANCE

Overally, this new proposal has maintained the original appearance, the form of pitched roof has been repeated on the original grey bricks, some has been replaced by glass panels to get more natural light. For those area do not nee

In this project, trying to examine an idea that using a pile up strategy to tranform simple boxes into complex massing and create a series of public and semi-private space to encourage the people living in this comunity to communicate more. In this way, some of the private activities can be broght back into the outdoor like how people from the old village dose all the time. eating, working, chatting on the street. So they can closely keep contact with each other and collaborate on all aspect of their daily life.

SITE ANALYSIS

The site situated in a creative park near the river with a nice waterfront garden. An art college is at the north road side of the site, while the south road side is the service centre. Far beyond, there are beautiful fields and a series of clustered country houses in between the fiields or along the river.

04. PAVILLION of LIGHT

Time: February. 2019 Programme: Professional Project Individual Project Responsibilities: Concept, 3D modeling( sketchup ), Technical Drawing (sketcup, CAD), Diagram(Illustrator, Photoshop), Report(Indesign). This project is to study the relation between the traditonal architecture and the modern building technique. With the use of the modern material and the modern construction method, what kind of structure can be created to respond the traditional architecture form and express the understanding of the traditional spiritual belief. By studying the special building that named Tian Tan, where emperor used to sacrifice to the heaven. A unique structure form named Zao Jing being found, and this structure form could only be used in the buildings of the highest level, after the urther study. Then, by studying the its plan, a series of squares and polygons being extracted, as the materials to assemble the new structure.

CONCEPT

In the book YING ZAO FA SHI from Ming dynasty, the preface as shown above has two sets of circle and square, which believe to be the module of the building, with the study much further, scholars found that a building always follow the scale. This becomes the origin of the form of this project. Another idea to push this design more further is the thinking of the relation between the belief and people`s daily life. Creating a place people are willing to visit all the time and somehow inspire people to think and communicate is what need to achieve functionally. A pavilion that can let people sit around comes into my mind. 37

BOCKGROUND: Introspection, spirituality and divinity. These are the elements around which the sacred architecture revolves. The light and the lightness of the materials join sacred and profane, creating an architecture that, through spaces and forms, try to invite the humans to an interior research.

THEME: Kaira Looro are two words in Mandinga language, the main culture in Tanaf. The greetings of welcome or farewell, are not simple greetings of “good morning” or “good evening”, but they are real good wishes and prayers for the peace of others. Often people greet each other "Alma kaira siyaa laa”, or that “God will give you peace." Kaira Looro, that in Mandingo language means “Architecture for Peace”, is not just architecture, but it also represents the link to a culture, a spirituality and research of interiority. The challenge is to celebrate this cult philosophy by designing a sustainable and culturally-driven architecture, for a place with a lack of materials and with low technology. In this proposal, layers of red brick walls provide natural transition, bringing people from outside ordinary world to internal spiritual space. Inner spiritual space are divided into congregation praying space and private a b meditation space. Inviting residents from different religion and ethical backgrounds, above all spaces allow them to play, rest, congregate, pray and meditate. Two entrances situate on the end of diagonal line of the building, following two symmetrical pathways which again lead to same destination. The outer arch and Inverted arch create thresholds for people to see each other, and evoke conversations. The sole destination emphasis our consensus is community togetherness. The symmetry of church fills liturgical expression of multi-religion church which emphasis equality, acknowledgement, interdependence and reliance among all.

a Entrance: Both brick arches and inverted arches bring rhythms of varying spacial levels, This bright and welcoming public space allow children playing on the swings and other residents to rest or gathering.

b Hallway: The holes on the brick walls permeating controlled holy lights from the sun. The natural light glowing on the humble brick walls forms variegated colour patches. Through appreciating them, people embrace sensation of sacredness, and get prepared for following religious activities.

c Ceremonial space entrance: Small scaled arches are carved through on the opposite walls of central communal spiritual space. Different scales of entrances are transitions from dark to light, from solidity of inner spiritual volume to liquidity of outer leisure volume.

c

d Ceremonial spaceďźšA central communal spiritual space with four column sits at each corner, hold the roof with a gap between the wall to bring in the light.

d

e Meditation space: At the end of both pathway, there are two private meditation rooms. The height of entrances is lower than that of an average human, providing enough privacy and security. The hole on the ceiling is the sole source of light. Natural light leaking through, offering prayers holiness and solitude.

f Exit: Brick arches bring strong consistency in aesthetic of the building. The inversion of inner and outer arches enrich variance of experience when a devout human gets though the construction. The psychological journey goes through the ascending from earthiness to holiness and thedescending from holiness back to earthiness.
