GOLFERS ANXIOUS TO POST TEAM SCORES IN ’21
In 2021, the Trenton High School girls golf team will have a luxury it didn’t have a year ago — the ability to post a team score.
There were no wins or losses for Trenton last season as the Bulldogs had just two golfers out. Both Josie Chumbley and Marianne Atup, now seniors, are back out this year, but three others will join them on the links this season.
Joining the team this year are a trio of freshmen in Sofia Currie, Morgan Brown and Reece Weldon. With five players out, not only can Trenton post a team score, but it will be able to throw out one score as team totals are tallied using just four individual scores.
“We actually have a team this year,” Chumbley said. “Last year it was just Josie and Mari and this year we are Trenton. Last year we could only place individually, so we are excited about that.”
Atup missed out on All-Grand River Conference honors by just eight strokes last year. She will slot in at or near the top of the Trenton lineup this year and has a goal to return home from the league tournament with a medal this year.
“That is definitely a goal this year,” Atup said. “Usually my practice rounds early on aren’t very good, but this year it has been pretty good. So, we will see where it goes from here.”
Trenton will travel to Cameron’s Veteran’s Memorial Golf Course for the GRC Tournament on Oct. 4 with individual and team honors on the line. That is the next to last date on the schedule for Trenton, however, giving the team plenty of time to come together, especially with a roster consisting of three freshmen.
The season opens on Tuesday, Aug. 31 for the Bulldog golfers, who will travel to Brookfield for a dual that day. Tee time for the event is scheduled for 4 p.m.
