Una edició més, Mecal ha preparat una minuciosa programació amb els millors curtmetratges tant de l’escena nacional com internacional. Enguany hem preparat una programació amb els millors curtmetratges del panorama actual, seleccionats d'entre els 5.000 rebuts, provinents de 100 països: una selecció de més de 350 curtmetratges distribuïts en 4 seccions oficials a competició - Internacional, Obliqua, Animació i Documental - i en nombroses seccions paral·leles temàtiques. A banda de, com ja és habitual a Mecal Pro, un programa farcit d’activitats paral·leles que acaba de completar la programació d’aquesta edició.
Once again Mecal has prepared a thorough programme with the best short films from the national and international scenes. This time we have prepared a programme that gathers the latest and highest quality works from the international scene, selected from more than 5,000 submissions and received from 100 countries all over the world: a selection of more than 350 short films distributed in 4 official competitions - International, Oblique, Animation and Documentary - and several thematic programmes. As it has become customary at Mecal Pro, we’ll also feature a programme full of activities and events to round up this edition’s final lineup.

A selection of animated short films, characterized by its irreverent, rebel and transgressive spirit.
ANIMACIÓ OBLIQUA
La secció Obliqua de Mecal aglutina aquelles obres que, sense arribar a ser totalment experimentals, sí se surten del camí habitual, de la línia recta... per sortir-se per la diagonal. Aquesta secció funciona com una extensió de la Competició Obliqua, amb la particularitat que totes les obres són d’animació i també optaran al Gran Premi d’Animació Mecal 2021. OBLIQUE ANIMATION
Mecal’s Oblique section brings together those films that, while not entirely experimental, do not follow the regular path, the straight line... but rather follow a divergent road. This section is an extension of the Oblique Competition, with the particularity that all of the works are animation films and will also be up for the Mecal 2021 Animation Grand Prize. DONES DE PAÏSOS DE L’EST
Europa de l’Est és coneguda arreu per les seves obres d’animació trencadores i diverses; lluny de la influència nord americana, artistes com Jiří Trnk o Jan Lenica van saber trencar amb el naturalisme idílic de Disney per crear un estil únic, atrevit i pioner al món. Si bé és cert que tradicionalment els grans animadors han estat homes, aquesta tendència definitivament ha canviat. Aquesta secció recull els millors curtmetratges de creació femenina per posar en valor l'extraordinària feina de les dones de l’est. FEMALE ANIMATORS FROM EASTERN COUNTRIES
Eastern Europe is known everywhere for its groundbreaking and diverse animation; far from American influence, artists like Jiří Trnk or Jan Lenica knew how to break with Disney’s idyllic naturalism to create a unique, daring and pioneering style in the world. Even though traditionally great animators have been men, this tendency has definitely changed. This section brings together the best short films created by women to highlight the extraordinary work carried out by female animators in the East.

Cada vegada més, el pitch s’imposa com a tècnica de presentació de projectes audiovisuals per l’obtenció de finançament i l’accés a productores, canals i plataformes de vídeo sota demanda, i no és fàcil saber com fer-ho breu i interessant. Aquesta activitat neix de la voluntat de donar suport als creadors perquè dominin amb facilitat les tècniques comunicatives claus per presentar i fer atractiu un projecte en un pitch.

WORKSHOP: ANIMATION FOR TEACHERS WITH MARIO TORRECILLAS
Increasingly, pitching has imposed itself as a technique to present audiovisual projects to obtain funding and access to production companies, channels, and video-on-demand platforms, and it is not easy to know how to make it brief and interesting. The main goal of this activity is to help creators easily master key communication techniques to present and make a project attractive during a pitch.
Mario Torrecillas will tell us about the audiovisual and educational PDA project, “Petits Dibuixos Animats”, which, throughout film and animation workshops, fosters collective reflection and creativity of children through music and animation. He will transmit the foundations of the techniques used in the project, so they can be put into practice in the classrooms, using mobile devices and tablets, available to teachers and students.

Mecal always reserves a part of its programming for social causes and if there is a problem that affects the totality of the population, it is the planet’s health. With this activism session we want to contribute to the cause and offer a window where we report problems such as the disappearance of bees or the cruelty of the food industry, celebrate imaginative solutions being thought up and implemented around the world, and thus encourage the adoption of environmentfriendly attitudes through cinema. The Catalan Talents section will showcase a selection of the best productions in short films from Catalonia. It is a strong commitment to providing visibility for national films in the context of a prestigious festival. CURTMETRATGES ERÒTICS
Davant d’una Europa hermètica i l’Amèrica de Trump, la crisi de la immigració arriba a nivells crítics. Viatges cap a una vida millor acaben convertits en veritables malsons, sense cap mena de garantia de futur. El què moltes vegades és invisible, però, són els problemes posteriors: la integració, la dificultat de l’idioma i la nostàlgia. Aquesta secció recull un seguit d’històries d’arreu del món explicades des de tota mena de perspectives, sense oblidar mai la vessant més humana.
LGBTIQ+ One more year Mecal pronunces in favor of freedom, equality and sexual and gender diversity, so it reserves a place in its program for the LGBTIQ+ collective. "Mans en l'aire, no dispareu", "No puc respirar", "El silenci blanc és violència", "El meu fill és el següent?" són alguns dels eslògans que denuncien la normalització de la violència contra la població afroamericana als EUA. El moviment #BlackLivesMatter ha inundat els carrers i les xarxes socials de tot el món després de l’assassinat a mans de la policia de George Floyd i ha inspirat a Mecal per crear aquesta col·lecció de curtmetratges que tracta qüestions com la violència policial o el racisme institucional.

FEINA DE MERDA
MERCAT INTERNACIONAL DEL CURTMETRATGE
A través de la visió inconformista que sempre ha caracteritzat al Mecal, els curtmetratges de Feina de Merda denuncien amb un to reflexiu i irònic una societat sacsejada pel capitalisme i obsessionada per la productivitat. Deixant al descobert un sistema que està anul·lant als individus per convertir-los en màquines de consum.
El Mercat Internacional de Curtmetratges té l’objectiu de crear nexes entre talent i finançament, creant un espai que faciliti la trobada entre creadors i compradors, distribuïdors i experts en estratègies de festivals. En el marc del mercat hi haurà les sessions de one-to-one, organitzades en col·laboració amb Catalan Films & TV, on els assistents es podran reunir personalment via Zoom amb professionals afins.
BLACK LIVES MATTER
"Hands in the air, don't shoot", "I can't breathe," "White silence is violence," "Is my son next?" are some of the slogans that denounce the normalization of violence against the African American population in the US. The #BlackLivesMatter movement has flooded streets and social media around the world following the murder of George Floyd and has inspired Mecal to create this collection of short films that address issues such as police violence or institutional racism.
TRILOGIA DE MERDA / SHITTY TRILOGY CASA DE MERDA

Through the nonconformist vision that has always characterized Mecal, Shitty Job’s short films denounce in a reflective and ironic tone a society shaken by capitalism and obsessed with productivity. Uncovering a system that is nullifying individuals to turn them into consumer machines. PARELLA DE MERDA
Ni l’amor se salva en aquest món de merda. Per si no en tinguéssim prou amb la casa i la feina, en l’època dels match i els superlikes les relacions també destaquen per la seva precarietat. En aquesta secció ens allunyem del romanticisme més sentimental per apropar-nos, des del realisme, a la vida de les parelles a través d’històries plenes d’humor.
Confinats, teletreballant o en quarantena, vivim una temporada on malauradament ens hem de passar moltes hores tancats a casa. La pandèmia ha evidenciat una crisi de l’habitatge que arrosseguem des de fa temps i, com que en alguns moments no ens queda més remei que aguantar, Mecal proposa aquesta divertida col·lecció de curtmetratges per reconciliar-nos amb les nostres cases de merda.

El micromecenatge és un mètode en alça i una bona alternativa per trobar part o la totalitat del finançament d’un projecte cinematogràfic. En aquest taller, un dels cofundadors de Verkami donarà pautes, consells, idees: en resum, assessorament per a què es pugui realitzar una campanya de crowdfunding exitosa.
A script with a good structure is key to developing a successful short fiction film. What are the strengths and weaknesses of your structure? How do you get a story with a rhythm? How do you detect dispensable dialogue? The selected filmmakers of short film projects in the script phase will be advised by a script doctor. The workshop will be held by Zebina Guerra.
FESTINET
Since 2019, Mecal takes part in Festinet, a net of festivals about European short films that wants to defend the role of the contests in the promotion of the European cinema. Annually, each festival member nominates a national movie to represent it and to compete for a prize against the other movies selected. In this session it will be possible to enjoy the program with all the nominees of the last year, which they will be projected as well in the other festivals of the net.

Des de 2019, Mecal forma part de Festinet, una xarxa de festivals de curtmetratges europeus que vol reivindicar el paper dels certàmens en la promoció del cinema europeu. De manera anual, cada festival membre nomina una pel·lícula nacional per representar i competir per un premi amb la resta de pel·lícules seleccionades. Nascut l’any 1984 a Chemnitz, Alemanya, ha experimentat d’una forma transgressora en l’àmbit de l’eròtica i el cinema. La seva visió sense complexos i la seva curiositat per la sexualitat i els cossos ens ha deixat una sèrie de curtmetratges que es troben a la frontera entre el documental i la pornografia, retratant parafilies com el BDSM o l’autonepiofilia, només aptes per les ments més obertes. SEX ADDICTIONS: JAN SOLDAT RETROSPECTIVE When you know the works of Jan Soldat, the conception of what sex is and which are its limits completely changes.
