' Shifting Ground '

The ground is the most fundamental place for people to stay. 'Shifting Ground' defines the act of architecture. In the act of architecture, we connect the existing ground with the other or sometimes shift the ground into a completely new and independent space. By contemplating on shifting ground for several years, it becomes one of my architectural languages and serves as a means to connect existing ground and newly proposed ground.

My aspiration in architecture is to make many people’s lives as enjoyable as possible. Knowing the value of everyday happiness that architecture can give people is why I want to propose a well-conceived design. Every project detailed in this portfolio is a sincere expression of my architectural language and purpose.

renovation master plan for old underground passage(shopping mall) of 5 subway station 2020 Korea Railroad Architecture Awards Finalist Year : 2020 Type : public underground walkway Site : Euljiro, Seoul, South Korea Instructor : Jeonghun Hwang Category : 5th Grade Thesis Project

South Korea's 80's subways are long connected to underground passages (underground shopping malls). With the development of underground space, other underground spaces in Seoul have developed in various forms. However, the underground of Euljiro, the historical center of Seoul, maintains the shape of a narrow corridor-type underground passage in the 1980s. It is becoming a space that is ignored by people. This project suggests moving underground to the ground and provides a connection between trapped underground passages and above-ground parks. The citizens' daily underground spaces and the everyday landscapes built right above them were planned to add life to the citizens.

Elements of Euljiro Urban Context

Ordinary Undergound of Seoul

Euljiro 3-ga Station is the gateway to the central part of Eulji-ro, which has wide connectivity of underground shopping malls. Currently, Euljiro is undergoing many changes as the center of Seoul's urban industry, and the underground have been cut off from the ground without featuring the regional identity of Eljiro. The reconstruction of Euljiro 3-ga Station and underground shopping malls suggests a new type of daily underground space in Seoul. In the face of a steady increase in the vacancy rate of subway underground shopping malls, it would be appropriate to suggest a new architectural proposal by presenting a different way of reconstruction.

In Seoul, the modern city, walking through a low and stuffy underground space to take a subway is a shared experience regardless of the rich or poor. The underground space formed by the transportation is collapsing into a space that just passes by without overcoming the limitations of increased vacancy rate of the extended underground shopping mall with low floor height and disconnection from the ground. It proposes a new type of seoul ordinary underground space by structurally reconstructing the Eulji underground shopping mall area, which has the longest urban connectivity among underground shopping malls in Seoul and can try to connect with the ground at a relatively shallow depth.

Exisiting Euljiro Site Model (1:600)

Currently, Euljiro has three main features. The first is the existing industrial space. The second is the consumption space, and the last is the underground space for citizens' daily movement using the business district of Eulji-ro. On the ground, the space of production and consumption is in conflict, and the underground is used only as a space of movement. In this regional situation of Euljiro, it will be a new Euljiro 3-ga Station that will have a regional identity and resolve regional conflicts if it can be a space to supplement the local infrastructure in subway stations and accommodate the increased number of visitors.

What should be the working space in an era of blurred boundaries? As the boundaries of behavior become blurred, the boundaries of space are becoming blurred. The ground is the most fundamental place for people's movement. In this project, I suggest a sequence of the ground. The ground that started in the plaza is continuously connected to make the working space a sequence of the ground. The connected ground with sequence will be a new working space for the digital native generation as a space for communication, and the separated ground can be a space for concentration.

Transboundary Working Space

To design the workspace of the young entrepreneur of digital natives, the behavior division according to their business development stage was analyzed. Space's character is organized by connecting what space is occupied according to the character of the behavior. Therefore, space's character can be organized according to how many of the three characteristics are: live, play, and work. The lifestyles of the digital natives are becoming more and more different from the past. As much of everyday life is digitalized, life is free from space constraints. With the disappearance of space constraints, work is expanding into more public areas, and life and play are narrowing down into more private and personal areas. It is essential to analyze how young entrepreneurs' play, work, and life are mixed in these changes to design their working space.

The character of space and the behavior are clearly distinguished by space division.

The behavior of work is divided into various and does not fit with the existing space division.

The line between work and not work becomes blurred and still does not fit with the existing space.

A space where space character can be flexibly changed according to transboundary behaviors.

The most significant characteristic of the lifestyle of young entrepreneurs in the alpha generation is transboundary. The boundaries between life, work, and play become blurred, thereby blurring the characteristic of space. Unlike the existing rigid and separate spaces, the space was planned to be transboundary to suit the alpha generation's freely changing lifestyles. This sequence allows space to be chosen according to their fluidly changing lifestyle, and it creates free communication.

03 Two strokes on Han-river

the vision of Han river in the age of peace and unification JUNGLIM Architecture Award for Students 2020 Grand Prize Year : 2020 Type : River Utilization Facility Location : Han river, South Korea Category : Idea Competition Jury: Minsuk Jo, Changmo Ahn Role : Collaborative Work as a Team of 3 members

The Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), which symbolizes the disconnection between South Korea and North Korea, does not exist only on land. The Han River estuary, which does not have the Military Demarcation Line (MDL), still exists as a "marine DMZ" as it remains a restricted area where private ships cannot enter. Through the September 19 Pyongyang Joint Declaration, the Han River estuary was set as a "common water area" that can be used together by the north and south. (However, due to the breakdown of the North Korea-U.S. talks, the channels have not been opened.) How can the Han River Estuary and further the Han River be used in an era of peace and unification? In the project, we propose an artificial island, based on independent and neutral charateristics, as a new ground to restore the productivity of the Han River while preseving the ecology of the 'marine dmz'.

The vision of Han river in the era of peace and unification

The Prospect of Han River Estuary and Expansion to the Whole Han River

Among the words that come to mind when it comes to "Han River," there is "the lifeline of the nation" in addition to "the miracle of the Han River." The Han River as a "national lifeline" is a nickname given not only because it was the center of inland logistics through many tributaries, but also because of the gathering of logistics through the mouth of the Han River. The Han River has lost its vitality as a river due to the division. As the western end of the Han River became a military-controlled "neutral area of the mouth of the Han River," the logistics function was lost, and the riverside of the Han River turned into a water play area, not a port and industrial facility. It is difficult to draw a detailed blueprint for reunification. However, if tension between South and North Korea is eased and traffic is guaranteed to pass through the waters rather than the neutral zone, the mouth of the Han River will be connected to Pyongyang and Sinuiju through the West Sea. Today, we are about to draw a completely different Han River from the previous generation. In the era of peace and unification, what vision can our Han River and Seoul have?

The Han River estuary is historically and geographically located in the area of peace and unification. It is a critical position, and it has been suspended for 65 years since the armistice. Because the demarcation Line is located on the river, it is also designated as a common utilization zone of south and north.

The Expansion Module in the center of Seoul In the era of peace and unification, It is obvious that the prospect for the Han River depends on the estuary of the Han River. The first step taken from the estuary determines the new appearance beyond the fragmentary function of the Han River as a half-sized river. It is time for the two Koreas to preserve the ecological resources of the estuary and to produce a virtuous cycle of ecological productivity into the Han River.

System Elements of Eco-cycle Island Eco-cycle island basically consists of program layer for people and ecology on the surface and production and purification layer for energy production and water circulation under the water surface. With the same system elements, the extension module is responsible for production and purification, and the spinal module is responsible for storage.

Extension Module

Spine

The essential purpose of the extension module is to form artificial wetlands. Besides, aquatic cultivation, wetland walkway, and landing place can be formed on the program layer instead of the wetlands. Under the water surface, there is a wave energy converter unit or underwater purification system, which produces energy or purified water. Energy and purified water produced in one module are transferred to the spinal module.

The spinal module corresponding to the spine of the ecological circulation island plays a central role in the entire island's movement and production. An extension module can be attached to the spinal module on the extension frame. There are batteries and storage in the underwater machine room that can store wave energy and purified water produced from the extension modules.

Like the formation of an eco-cycle island, the second stroke manufacturing facility also consists of a spinal module and connected extension module. The spine module functions as a shared space, and logistics function at the top. The basement is connected to the spine module of the eco-cycle island to supply the island's agricultural and industrial water and eco-friendly energy to each facility.

System Formation of Two Strokes

It is to propose a system that can be applied throughout the Han River. A smaller square module is proposed so that two masses could be placed along the river curve. It is separated by a spinal module and an extension module so that it can have an efficient system anywhere in Han River. The two strokes are connected by a supply hub, where energy and purified water are stored.

Eco Friendly Mobility Logistics With recovered connection, the Han River restores the role of logistics. In addition to mobility that uses the flow of water, it is possible to play a role as a logistics facility that supports the overall eco-friendly mobility in the city, including drones that has many restrictions on the ground transportation

It supplies purified water from the underwater purification of the extension module. Citizens and tourists will experience a new waterfront cultural space.

From Floating Swimming Pool The spinal module corresponding to the spine of the ecological circulation island plays a central role in the movement and production of the entire island. An extension module can be attached to the spinal module on the extension frame. In the underwater machine room, there are batteries and storage that can store wave enerygy and purified water produced from the extension modules.

View from South to North in Common Water Zone Now when looking at the Common Water Zone from South Korea, people can see the facilities, eco-cycle islands and North Korea. Eco Cycle Island creates a new historical meaning as the new MDL in a peaceful sense. The flowing Han River is no longer just a landscape. It indicates that the two strokes have meaning in Han River, and people can see that the ecosystem of the Han River is preserved while looking at the flowing Han River, and that the productivity lost by the Han River is recovering.

Pangyo Alpha Dome City Central Plaza Idea Competition 2nd Prize Year : 2019 Type : Public Space Design Location : Pangyo, Gyeonggi Do, South Korea Category : Idea Competition Role : Collaborative Work as a Team of 4 members

The plaza of the new town is formed in a transportation hub, but only the mega scale buildings are full of people, and the plaza below is not crowded with people. Located in the center of Alpha Dome, a business building complex in Pangyo, a new city in Korea, the plaza existed just as a transit point without providing a place for people to gather. This competition was an idea competition to reconstruct this central plaza. We proposed a hill by shifting the ground and a roof that interacts with the people to allow them to gather in the plaza where people would not gather before.

Motion-Sensor Balloon Roof

Central Plaza Site Plan This creates a new flow by the three-dimensional transformation of the existing central square, which lacks symbolism and centrality. A circular lake was created in the center where the skylight was located, and a new terrain was formed around it to create a differentiated space. The balloon roof floating above the terrain gives users a shade and an interesting experience.

The balloon roof creates shade in the daytime and fills the central plaza sky with the lights at night. Through camera sensors installed in the structure frame, balloons move by interacting with people. As more people gather, the balloon roof becomes more wavy and symmetrical with the wave hill below.
