City T is an urban region located in an island country. Like many countries in South-East Asia, which had experienced Age of Discovery and being a colonial country, the city finally opened its door through the world-wide trade, and became an active city. Now the city is going to celebrate its 100th anniversary, so the government plans to establish several theme buildings. As a landmark during the celebration, they are founded to introduce the characters of its developing history. In addition, they also play an important role to enhance urban activities in everyday life. The government hopes that the urban space can be redefined, and new possibilities can be brought out through the involvement of those new buildings. This project is a part of them, and herb (spice), one of the significant features, is the theme of the building. Therefore it provides exhibition halls for the visitors, and provides public spaces for the residents as well.

The project starts from researching a specific artist, and figure out the properties and concepts of his works. Then series of conceptual models are made to interpret and convey the idea of thinking as a study method. After those studies, a relevant spatial concept is concluded, and is brought to solve problems in a physical environment, in the way of designing a pavilion in THU campus. Finally, a flagship store of a particular brand in an urban context is designed based on all the concepts developed before.

Juan Gris (1877-1927) was a Spanish painter and sculptor. His works are closely connected to the emergence of an innovative artistic genre—Cubism, creating several of the movement's most distinctive works. At first Gris painted in the analytic style of Cubism, but after 1913 he began his conversion to synthetic Cubism, of which he became a steadfast interpreter, with extensive use of papier collé (French: pasted paper, i.e. collage). In his pictures, Gris playfully switched between reality, illusion and abstraction. Thereby the represented objects generally unite different perspective views. Juan Gris: “...From a bottle Cezanne makes a cylinder, whereas I begin with a cylinder to create an individual item of a particular type; from a cylinder I make a bottle, a particular bottle. Cezanne tends toward architecture, I, on the other hand, begin with it. That is why I compose with abstract elements (colours) and arrange the objective elements only when the colours have become objects....”

In this step, the summary of concepts from last 2 parts was brought to the design of a flagship store. First of all, the item sold had to be chosen based on the similar property with the “uncertain definition of edges,” as well as the logic in choosing a brand.
Either the measure of “plus” and “minus” can break the edge of a cube, and the several layers they make produce optical illusion of a single space. Since each space has its direction, they can be specified with a particular program. The surrounding factors were also considered.

Design Portfolio
The studio began with series of researches on a specific character of a creature, and attempted to introduce some relevant concepts into a design of spatial prototype. In this case, the variation of skin colour on squids was studied. Squids and other Cephalopods share an ability of changing appearance in order to adapt to the environments. Looking closer at its skin, the pattern is consisted of several layers of pigment cells - chromatophores. Each chromatophore unit is composed of a single chromatophore cell and numerous muscle, nerve, glial and sheath cells. Inside the chromatophore cell, pigment granules are enclosed in an elastic sac, called the cytoelastic sacculus. To change colour the animal distorts the sacculus form or size by muscular contraction, changing its translucency, reflectivity or opacity. The contraction of the muscle cells stretches the lenticular sacculus into a thin, flat disc with serrated edges. The diameter of the sacculus expands up to about 7 times its retracted state which is equivalent to an increase in area of about 50 times. Because of the elastic nature of the sacculus walls, primary infoldings and pouches of the chromatophore appear in its upper and lower surfaces during chromatophore retraction and disappear during chromatophore expansion.

After several radial muscle cells are lying close to the central chromatophore cell, the muscles begin to attach to the central cell. Next, there is an unbroken contact between the muscle cells and the central cell, which finally generate infoldings on its surface.

New chromatophores arise in spaces below and between extant (older) ones. New (younger) chromatophores are smaller than older ones and remain so, thus creating an age/size hierarchy. After the new chromatophores arise they will attract innervation from motoneurons in the brain and thus form the shape of the new units.

In the final model, the frame unit is designed to be a fixed component rather than stretchable bars. There are sliders fastened on different axes between one unit and another, and also connect with axes of their corresponding foldable cells. Once the slider move along an axis, the cell above contracts or expands, and the units nearby change their positions subsequently.

In this studio, a common phenomenon related to urban facade is discussed. The covering elements in our city divide space into two distinct sides, which have different scenes, activities, speeds, stories...and so on. Instead of being still, the interface has its potential to create an inside-out, outside-in field, and to interfere the connection between two sides more actively. The project involves three process: flow mapping, superficial intervening, and creative interfacing. First, a specific site that can refer to the interface issue is found. By mapping its context from different approaches, a special point of view and method are generated to conduct a proposal.

Zhongshang North Road in Taipei City is chosen to be studied since it has played an important role during the last century of Taiwanese history, and it contains diversity in cultural aspect. A century ago, when Japanese colonized Taiwan, the road used to be the minister's route toward Yuan Shan Temple, so it became a gathering place for Japanese elites and the first modernized road in Taiwan. After retrocession, the road continued to be promoted as a diplomatic area. Then when the Korean War began (1950), the US Military Assistance and Advisory Group (MAAG) presented in Taiwan, the region was full of foreigners, as well as the import commercial they brought in. After 1980, although the MAAG left, the region remained it identity of fashion avenue until early 90s, when eastern Taipei raised and had taken place of it. Now, many of the redundant commercial space are replaced by a range of wedding industry, some of them are utilized by exotic workers as weekend recreation place. Still some of them haven't been renewed...

St. Christopher's Church, first being established for the Americans, now becomes a gathering place for workers from Philippine. Import Good Trade Center, which was emerging followed Americans' activities, has intensive grid-patterned cabins for the demand of selling at that time. After the commercial center shifted, it's now almost unused. Jin-Won-Won Mall, a product of the importation period, is a 2-floor market with divided cabins. It's now reused by the exotic workers for weekend recreation.

Utilizing the same pattern as commercial spillover, the concept is let some new programs spill out of the in-between break. To approach this idea, several set of frames are chosen, which I call the "machines", to be filled in different programs based on the previous mapping. Since the properties of these programs may overlap from one to another, the common requirement will be spillover to the void yard, and it will be available to the public. This whole process is like a production line in a factory.

In the Internet era, the contact between people has broken the boundary of physical space. There are more and more ways to group people through the network. However, the media contain rapidly changeable relationships that show the dynamic with underlying mechanism.
individual 1.a person considered separately rather than as part of a group 2. a person who is original and very different from others 3. (informal, usually disapproving) a person of a particular type, especially a strange one
Nowadays, as the urban space had been sliced into minima, relationships have been reconstructed in a virtual environment, and cyber space has become new form of human connection. It is the flexibility and infinity of hyper linking that makes virtual social network possible. On this open interactive platform, individuals start to found varied communication with different groups of people.
collective A collective is a group of people who share or are motivated by at least one common issue or interest, or work together on a specific project(s) to achieve a common objective.
The Highrise of Homes project James Wines, 1981
The project attempts to introduce the idea of tagging on the internet into the physical living space. It hopes to bring in lively real relationship by creating an active environment.
modern collective housing
A commune or intentional community, which may also be known as a "collective household", is a group of people who live together in some kind of dwelling or residence, or in some other arrangement (eg. sharing land). Collective households may be organized for a specific purpose (eg. relating to business, parenting, or some other shared interest). Collective consciousness is a term created by French social theorist Emile Durkheim that describes how an entire community comes together to share similar values.

Tag function in "flickr" as a system of classification called "folksonmy", which means non-hierarchical categorizing defined by collaborative users, allows users to browse their target information more accurately and efficiently. People who upload the photo create multiple tags to characterize it, so any user who keys in one of these tags can find the photo. Tags also represent the uploaders themselves, for the contents of the tags reflect some aspects of their interests or personalities. As a result, looking at the pictures with a specific tag can be regard as grouping people with same interest. Therefore "tagging" reveals the inner connections between individuals.

The project aims to create a mobile living prototype. A night market is chosen to be the site, which has opposite usages and views between day and night. There are a range of movable units designed based on the commercial requirements of vendors in different types. At night, the units occupy every corner in the night market. At other times, however, these modular components can be systemically assembled into a single living space to fit the vendors’ needs when they are taking break.

Inspired by the dynamic skyline of the historical city, the project located in Tiberina Island creates a container that various activities can be involved in. The upside-down folding horizon represents the idea of “figure-sky, and leads the visitor to experience the scenario through their movement. The folding landscape integrates both indoor and outdoor programs with the platform itself and the space enveloped in it. As a machine for viewing/being viewed, the building provides several interactions between the layers it creates.

The project attempts to turn an insensible data (used electricity) into a sensorial experience by a simple action of the residents. When the scheme is in operation, once an occupant switches off a light its counterpart on the plaza will be light on. Therefore, the same amount of light can be used for more people in public, and promote outdoor events of community as well. At night, the transformable system blurs the boundary between housing and urban space, and also create new field for civic nightlife.

TAICHUNG-EXPO 2015: Design and Identity This exhibition shows the work produced during the marcosandmarjan / Tunghai University - Digital Architecture Workshop which happened between the 31.3.08 and 9.4.08 at Tunghai University. The purpose of the workshop is to launch a general debate on the potential and fundamental role of the Shuinan airport area in the future development of Taichung. As this large area was recently acquired by the local authority this land's future expansion should be opened to the public. It offers a unique opportunity for the city to engage the population in the decision making for this area. Therefore this exhibition allows the visitors to express their views on the workshop's proposal, and, most of all, state their opinions about the development of the area as a whole. marcosandmarjan (Architects Marcos Cruz and Marjan Colletti based in London) together with staff from Tunghai Architecture Dept. and their students propose on a particular area of the site an international exhibition (Taichung EXPO 2015) with the theme Design and Identity. The expo is thought to promote the potential role of Taiwan as a leading center of design in Asia, as well as regenerate part of the previous airport area with a series of public buildings / infrastructures that reinforce the cultural strength and identity of Taichung. This expo should be used by the most successful and representative industries as a window to the world showing their research and visions of the future. Consequently, the expo would to a large extend be sponsored by these industries, instead of spending large public funds as in other similar events. The proposed plan has to be understood as a work-in-process experiment and not as a final design proposition. It is the result of an inside-out urbanism in which each individual building is designed prior to the general layout. Such an approach allows the creations of an architectural vision imbued with a variety and detail that common urban plans lack. Each proposed building has two programs, one for the expo period and the other suggesting the local universities, an ecological center, several exhibition spaces, a multipurpose hall, housing, and entertainment.
