Vista named a National Blue Ribbon School

Laveen 8th graders attend Career Day

Vista del Sur Accelerated Academy has been named a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. The National Blue Ribbon School program recognizes overall academic excellence. Vista del Sur was one of only four schools in Arizona to join this esteemed community. They were nominated as an Exemplary High Performing School, receiving this distinction for the performance of all students on the AZMERIT assessment in both math and English language arts in addition to other state performance targets. Their success has been attributed to the integration of technology into the daily instruction and specific math instructional strategies. Vista del Sur will be recognized at award ceremony next month in Washington, D.C.

Laveen eighth graders visited Chase Field for the DBacks Career Day. Students were able to hear from and interact with professionals in Sports (Luis Gonzales), STEM, Healthcare, Zoology, and Public Service fields. They learned each profession’s daily responsibilities, the education needed to get there, and had the opportunity to ask questions based on their own interests. The day was broken into categories, making the event more interactive. There were activities such as games on the jumbo Tron and a “teacher dance off.” The eighth graders enjoyed learning about future careers and staying focused on achieving their college degree in order to pursue those dreams.

Legislators visit Trailside Point Two Trailside Point classes were visited by Representatives Reginald Bolding and Rebecca Rios this month. Rios spoke with Robert Zuckerman’s social studies class and Bolding visited Lindsay Delgado’s third graders. Both visits were part of the Arizona Educational Foundation’s “Bring Your Legislator to School Day.” The legislators discussed what it is like to serve as a state representative, described how bills become laws, and shared some of the legislation that came through the last session. .

Parents can now sign up for text messaging Laveen schools can now send parents text messages on pertinent school and district happenings. To sign up, text the word “YES” to 67587. You will need to do this from each device you wish to receive text messages. The phone numbers you register must already be on file as part of your child’s profile. If you need to update your contact information, please stop by your child’s school office. You may opt-out of receiving text messages any time, simply by texting “STOP” to the same number. Message and data rates may apply. SchoolMessenger does not share, sell, or lease personal information about you to any third-parties for commercial or marketing use.

Digital marquees installed across district Digital marquees are being installed at each Laveen school. The new marquees prominently feature the school and will be clearly visible during the day and night. The programmable marquees will enable schools to display and share more information with greater detail. They are being installed off the street so that they can easily be seen by passing parents and community members. Because they are digital, they can be easily updated for the most recent information and will allow the school to share multiple news items at a time. The marquees were funded through proceeds from last year’s bond election.

Black Box Theatre under construction Construction of Trailside Point’s Black Box Theatre is underway. When complete, after the winter break, the theatre will provide an ideal venue for the school’s performing arts programs. The building will allow for indoor and outdoor seating. The Black Box was designed by Orcutt Winslow and constructed by Chasse Building Team. The theatre is funded through proceeds from last year’s bond election.
