Phoenix Union students to volunteer at Laveen

Vista del Sur is now Vista del Sur Accelerated Academy. Vista’s staff and Site Council worked throughout the 2014-2015 school year to determine an appropriate name change that more clearly communicates what they are. Instruction at Vista is accelerated about one grade level, and its curriculum and educational philosophy are not what most people associate with a "Traditional" school. At its July meeting the Laveen Governing Board, unanimously voted to change the school’s name. The name change will continue the tradition of excellence at Vista while defining the school’s vision and expectations for the entire school community.

Students from Phoenix Union School District’s early education program will be volunteering in Laveen School’s K-2 classes. Through their two-year vocational program, Phoenix Union students spend the second year working in offcampus internships where they can learn more about effective teaching and program management.

Foundation awards $3,500 in scholarships The Laveen Education Foundation provided $3,500 in scholarships to Laveen students this year. Selected eighth grade students entering high school received a $100 scholarship placed in their high school bookstore account. These students were selected by the school staff for demonstrating exemplary leadership, citizenship, and service as well as high academic achievement or growth in their achievement. Additionally, two $1,000 scholarships were awarded to high school graduates who were promoted from eighth grade in the Laveen Elementary District. This is the first year the Laveen Education Foundation has been able to provide scholarships. The scholarships were made possible through the support of Laveen District employees and community members who contributed to the Foundation through monetary donations as well as supporting the Winter and Spring festivals that raised scholarship funds.
