Presets in modo 401 offer a wide array of pre-built, yet customizable content for building and decorating models and scenes. A drag-and-drop interface facilitates scene assembly and organization. The over 1,500 Presets that accompany modo 401 are only the beginning; Luxology has built a new online content sharing system for the worldwide modo community to create, modify, and share materials, props, profiles, and lighting environments.
Expanded modeling toolset in modo 401 enables artists and designers to quickly add shape detail to 3D models by leveraging 1D and 2D profiles in a variety of modeling operations. New options for conforming to an underlying mesh facilitate retopology operations on top of complex CAD data or scanned datasets. The new replica modeling tools in modo 401 let you impart trillion polygon detail to scenes like leaves, barnacles, thorns, or rivets – all with minimal impact on stored scene size. Lighting enhancements in the modo renderer include caustics, dispersion, blurry refraction, volumetric lighting, and support for deep shadows, light linking, and multiple environments. A new Shadow catcher feature lets you easily integrate your model into an existing photo (see image at top of page).
Gary Haus
Faster Preview in modo 401 delivers an even more realistic view of the scene during the content creation process, as well as responsive navigation control even on larger scenes. The Preview renderer also supports more advanced lighting effects and will progressively render to near final image quality.

New data import and export options include the new Dassault Systèmes SolidWorks 2009 file importer, an updated FBX loader, and the ability to round trip COLLADA files from a growing list of complementary 3D software applications. modo 401 also can read .LXO files from Bentley Systems MicroStation software. Simon Van de Lagemaat
Mechanical animation assemblies or “rigs” can be created which enable complex movements from a simple set of controls. This is facilitated by the new ability to drive the channels from one item to another item, plus the introduction of animation Modifiers and Constraints. Dynamic parenting (animatable) and 2-joint Inverse kinematics control over joints are also provided.
“With modo 401 I get outstanding results, and it is an amazing tool engineered from the ground up for today’s projects.” Gary Coulter

Concept modeling modo® is a powerful tool for concept modeling at the design ideation stage. Based upon a flexible geometry type called subdivision surfaces, modo offers freeform design opportunities for designers of all kinds. modo excels at creating “structured organic shapes,” which are objects that have detailed organic features in conjunction with mechanical or engineered shapes. The surface detail might be an extruded tire tread, foil wrapping, plastic scrubbing fibers, embossed details — whatever you want. Need to iterate on a concept? modo is your tool.

You can sculpt or paint on 3D surfaces in modo without going to another software package. At the concept stage, sometimes it is easier to paint things like parting lines than to model every detail.

modo® for Artists
Create at the Speed of Thought. Model, Sculpt, Paint, Animate The process of creating and modeling has evolved, and the results show it. Nowadays, the old linear workflow of modeltexture-render has been replaced by a new freedom to paint, sculpt, and tweak your model – all while seeing your creation in stunning graphic detail thanks to modo’s amazing Preview renderer. It is like performing hundreds or thousands of test renderings before you go to final rendering. 3

“When we first saw the Canon bobsleigh layout and specifications, we were not sure how we were going to turn this image around in the short time necessary; just five working days. Thanks to modo’s fantastic modeling, duplication, and instancing tools, two of us managed to build from scratch the whole scene which consisted of over 250 thousand subdivided pieces of paper. We then used modo’s renderer which we knew could cope with this amount of data to create our final image of 21,0000 pixel by 8500 pixels. Once again, modo came through. Everybody was extremely happy and we got to go home!”

The modo® renderer produces stunning results in a fraction of the time that you might expect. Every renderer has its individual characteristics, and the modo renderer consistently delivers results that exceed expectations. A companion Preview renderer gives you an updated look at your scene throughout the content creation process so that you know exactly what you will get when you proceed to the final rendering stage.
