Welcome to Midway! Welcome to Midway!
EDDIE CORNBLUM, HEAD COACH
Welcome to today’s game and thank you for supporting Midway baseball!
Coach Cornblum is in his seventh year as Head Coach at Midway High School. Coach Cornblum holds a Bachelor’s degree in recreation with a minor in Business Management from the University of Mary Hardin Baylor. His early coaching experience included serving as Assistant Coach under Craig McMurtry at Temple College (1997-1999), Assistant Coach under Larry Haynes at Temple HS (2000-2003), and Assistant Coach under David Tidwell at Belton HS (2003-2008). In 2008, Coach Cornblum became Head Baseball Coach at Belton HS where he led their program until his departure for Midway High School in 2016. Cornblum served as the Regional Director for the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association (THSBCA) for 3 years (2012-2015), as well as the Head Baseball Coach for Team Texas 20112013. In 2016, Coach Cornblum was named to the THSBCA All Star Committee and served as the Head Coach for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ Victory Bowl. Since coming to Midway, Coach Cornblum’s teams have won 3 district Chamionships, sent dozens of players to college and has seen his teams average 23 wins a year. Success should never be once in a while, it should be sustained.
There is so much Cornblum loves about coaching. His favorites include developing players, the challenge of excellence, practice,
games, edging the baseball field, the relationships with his players, the friendships he shares with his fellow coaches, and last but not least....WINNING!
Coach Cornblum and his wife, Deena, have two children - daughter Terran, 27, who resides in Austin, and Couper who is a junior at Purdue and plays baseball for the Boilermakers.
In his spare time, Cornblum likes to spend time with his wife, workout, watch movies, and work on the baseball field. The Cornblums are very involved with special needs groups. Coach Cornblum is the founder of “Homerun for Health”, a fundraiser held in collaboration with Scott & White Children’s Hospital.
His advice to players today is “There might be players more talented than you, but there is no reason you can’t be a great teammate, out work your opponent, and so whatever you can to help your team be successful.”
“There is nothing worse in life than wasted time.”
-Coach Cornblum
Ben Basden Assistant Coach, Varsity
Coach Basden is currently in his 18th year of coaching—his seventh at Midway High School. He earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Baylor University. His coaching experience includes time spent as a baseball coach at Vanguard College Preparatory School and Troy High School. His favorite thing about coaching baseball is the opportunity to positively impact young men, while watching them compete and respond to the challenges in the game of baseball. In addition to coaching, he is also the Worship Leader at Crossroads Fellowship Church. In his spare time, he enjoys playing music, reading and spending time with his wife, Michelle and his children, Bryce (11), Brinkley (9), and Brewer (6). His favorite quote is from John Wooden: “Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.” Coach Basden’s best advice to his players is to make the most of every moment and every relationship.
Brett Somers Assistant Coach, Varsity
Coach Sommer is a graduate of Texas A&M University. This is his 11th year of coaching and he’s excited about joining the Midway Baseball Staff. He has spent most of his career in the Houston area, with stops at HuffmanHargrave, North Shore, New Caney, and Dayton High Schools.
He and his wife, Julie are returning to Central Texas to be closer to family. Coach Sommer is a 2005 graduate of Troy High School, where he was a 3-year letterman for the Trojan Football, Basketball, and Baseball teams.
Midway Athletics has always had a rich tradition of excellence in athletics and he is excited to be a part of it. Coach Sommer also serves as the Varsity Offensive Line Coach for the Panther football program. “I want to inspire o ng men to thin deeper abo t their goals, find a o ntabilit or those goals, and realize it’s not about reaching those that are tangible, but more so the feeling/emotion they will feel when reaching each milestone. Those are the ultimate goals we chase.”
Coach Mathis is a graduate of The University of Texas and was a member of the 2015 Big XII Championship baseball team. After his junior year he was drafted in the 22nd round to the Houston Astros in 2017. He played two minor league seasons with the Astros and one season of Independent ball with the Windy City Thunderbolts in 2019. Outside of baseball he likes spending time o tdoors h nting and fishing. e also lo es spending time with his amil wi e Jerica and dog Deuce. His favorite quote is from Derek Jeter: “There may be people that have more talent than you, but there’s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do”. His best advice he has to players is play the game hard and have fun and the pressure will turn to pleasure.
Nick Wright Assistant Coach, Varsity
Coach Wright is a graduate of Baylor University and was a member of 2012 Big XII Championship baseball team. Prior to Baylor, he pitched for two seasons at Angelina College in Lufkin, tying the school record for career appearances. Coach Wright is a graduate of Belton High School, where he played three seasons of varsity baseball.
Prior to Midway, Coach Wright coached for four years at Bruceville-Eddy High School, where he served as the head baseball coach for three of those years. In his spare time, he enjoys working out, traveling, riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle and taking naps. His best advice for players is, “As the years pass, your teammates will remember you a lot more for how you treated them than or how o per ormed on the field.
Chad is in his eleventh year at Midway, previously serving as the Head Athletic Trainer at both Ennis and Sulphur Springs High Schools. He attended college at Seward County Community College, Iowa State University, and grad ate s hool at tephen . stin. e is ertified thro gh the ational Athletic Trainers’ Association and is a Licensed Athletic Trainer.
had and his wi e hana are the pro d parents o atalie, ar ala and amesie. n his spare time, he li es to fish, h nt and ride o r wheelers. is advice for athletes is to trust the process of getting stronger and not take any shortcuts in achieving strength (i.e., eating healthy, getting plenty of sleep and staying properly hydrated).
Originally from Denton, Chen is in her thirteenth year at Midway. Prior to Midway, she worked as a Graduate Assistant at the University of Arkansas. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training from Baylor University, and a Master’s degree in Kinesiology from the University of Arkansas.

Dear Luke,
We are so proud of the young man you have become over the past four years. o ha e wor ed in redibl hard in the lassroom, on the field, and in o r community.
Over the past four years, you have pushed yourself in the classroom. Each year you’ve accepted the challenge of taking all honors or AP classes, often studying late into the night, only to arise the next morning at 6:00 a.m. to lift weights. Very few students are willing to take on the type of class schedule you’ve endured, particularly those who also compete in athletics. Yet, your willingness to do so re e ts o r hara ter and will reap great benefits or o in the years to come.
Over the past four years, you have worked tirelessly to earn the right to represent idwa on the baseball field. rom a.m. wor o ts, to ol ntar hitting and field wor a ter s hool, to late night hitting sessions, o ha e sed all the gifts God has given you to compete at the highest level. Each year, your hard work and leadership has earned you the respect of your teammates and coaches.
Over the past four years, you have served your community faithfully. In addition to o r time in the lassroom and on the field, o e spent literall hundreds of hours serving your local community along with your classmates. We couldn’t be more proud of your commitment to community service.
While we are certainly proud of all that you’ve accomplished in the classroom and on the field o er the past o r ears, the best is et to ome. e are on fident that o r a omplishments at idwa igh hool will be the er least of what you accomplish in this life. Your future is bright and we are so proud to call you son.

Dear
Jacob,
Jacob,
Life races by in the blink of an eye. It seems like only yesterday we brought you home. And before we knew it you were walking, then running to keep up with whatever or whoever was around you. As a younger brother, you were always around sporting events and older boys. You learned to swing a bat and throw a ball as soon as you were able to pick them up. At age 4, you played t-ball, then onto select ball at 7. It seems we never stopped and here we are today, your senior year. I will always remember traveling to play ball, the long weekends in the freezing cold, the blistering heat or fighting o giant mos itos. he onditions rarel seemed ideal b t wat hing o pla was alwa s worth it. er the ears ha e wat hed o pit h, at h, pla infield and sometimes e en o tfield , in a pin h. t m a orite was wat hing o hit. o were a sl gger rom the start
One of my favorite baseball memories is when you were 11. As a baserunner, you dove back into third base and h rt o r arm. t the time, we had no idea o r wrist was bro en o r team was alread down a pla er, so o sta ed in the line p. o pla ed right field, ggling o r glo e and
throwing with the same hand. And at the plate, you managed to put the ball in-play and score a few r ns. was so pro d o o or finding a wa to ma e it wor and not gi ing p or o rsel and o r team. ports ha e alwa s been a h ge part o o r li e and o ha e alwa s been s h a ompetitor. t you have also been gracious, compassionate, humble and supportive of your teammates. No matter what sport you’ve played, you gave it all that you have. You have always been a great teammate and a natural leader.
Life is never easy or ideal, but I have always been proud of how you keep working and pushing through challenges when they are presented. You have had more than your share of obstacles and in ries, b t o alwa s sta strong and bo n e ba . o r determination, ompetiti eness and grit will serve you well no matter where life takes you.

Watching you grow up over the years has been such a blessing. You have grown to be such a smart, mature, loving, and caring young man. We have always loved watching you play sports and will cherish this last baseball season.
Hey bro,
As our youngest grandchild, it is so hard to believe that you are a senior in high school. We will always remember watching you. So determined to keep up with your brother and his friends. It was tough for you sometimes, but it made you tougher and more determined to succeed.
We cannot wait to watch you continue to succeed as you move onto the next phases of your life. We will always be here loving and supporting you, whatever you do.
We love you! Gee & Grandpa
Jacob,
How many ways can we say how much we love you?

Roads ahead are packed with opportunities, adventures, successes and even some failures. Yet we know that you will always choose roads that will leave a positive impact.
here is no passion in pla ing small in settling or a li e that is less than the one you are capable of living: Nelson Mandela.
Go live your life, work hard, work smart, and know that you will always have our full support.

Dad and Mimi
It has been a pleasure watching you play these past years and watching you mature into the young man you have become.
Some of my favorite memories are watching o pla first base and o o rse hitting the baseball. his last season will be bittersweet or me. t am read to see what is coming next for you and to watch o r sh it
You have such a bright future ahead of you and I am beyond proud of the man you have become.
It is an honor to be your brother and your friend. I will always be your biggest fan.
Have fun and cherish this last ride.
