from the founders

inally the sun is out and warm weather is here. Everyone needs a little Vitamin D! When we can’t get it from the sun, we fake it with a spray tan. Northwest Arkansas has too many events that require cocktail dresses to be pale, especially this month. April brings some of our favorite events like the Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter’s Starlight gala; Butterflies and Blooms – a luncheon for Saving Grace; and the Sunshine gala, a fundraiser for the Northwest Arkansas Sunshine School and Development Center. We may have to add the Single Parent Scholarship Foundation of Benton County to our list too, since thanks to their VIP hour we got to chat one-on-one with Walmart CEO Doug McMillon (who gave us a shout-out during the luncheon that day.) However, we’re pretty excited about May too. We can’t wait to celebrate the second year of the Bentonville Film Festival from May 3-8. We got an inside peek at what happens in 24 hours with Gina Allgaier, the festival’s vice president of marketing. She’s always on the go! And thanks to Gina and her team, we got to sit down with BFF co-founders Trevor Drinkwater and Geena Davis. What a dynamic duo! They not only care about championing women and diversity in films, but developing the festival in Benton county and showing us Southerners how fabulous a film festival can really be. Also, through Mercy’s Women with a Mission group, we’re co-hosting a luncheon where Geena is speaking. We can’t wait to share details, so be sure to follow us on Instagram @3wmagazine. For now, you can read what the Bentonville Film Festival Foundation is doing on page 19. Event season is in full effect and we returned from Spring Break with some fresh new ideas and a desire to re-vamp those that have been in the hopper for years. What’s been inspiring you lately? Or maybe we should ask who has been inspiring you? We’d love to hear from you. Email us at inspire@3wmagazine.com and keep up with us on our blog: thegoldbubble.com. 1

was Nov. 13 and the next evening, The Jones Center’s Big Night Gala whisked guests away to San Francisco for a night of fun, food and shopping. December was filled with fun and philanthropy. Youth Bridge presented a Jimmy Buffet-themed event called Somewhere South of St. Somewhere. On Dec. 5, a record-setting nearly 1,500 guests helped Mercy Health Foundation Northwest Arkansas Charity Ball surpass $1 million, which was the largest amount ever raised. Funds went to support enhancements to Mercy Cardiology and the procurement of a Therapeutic Hypothermia, a tool used to manage post8 cardiac arrest patients. The Filharmonic, featured on NBC’s The Sing-Off, entertained the crowd with songs during dinner, along with performing a concert later in the evening. The group ended the concert with an amazing rendition of “O Holy Night.” The next day, Junior League of Northwest Arkansas held its 17th annual Winter 9 Dreams Tour of Homes, featuring eight fabulously decorated homes in Benton and Washington counties.

In January, The Martin Luther King, Jr. Council presented the 20th annual recommitment banquet at the Fayetteville Town Center. We also attended The Cancer Challenge Sponsorship Kickoff Breakfast with featured speaker Steve Bratspies, chief merchandising officer for Walmart U.S. The New School’s Spring Party, featuring the theme “Love is in the Air,” was Valentine’s weekend at the Arkansas Air Museum in Fayetteville. The cocktail attire event included live and silent auctions, dinner and music by The Big Dam Horns. All proceeds directly benefit students at The New School. Another one of our favorite events had guests mingling with 15 martinis at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School’s Tapas and Tinis. The event, which is the school’s largest fundraiser of the year, offered silent and live 16 auctions, dinner, music and dancing.

hours with

Gina Allgaier

vice president of marketing, bentonville film festival

6 a.m. I begin the day by checking emails. After that, it’s time to get ready for work and take the dog for a quick walk. Then I’m out the door and ready start meetings for the day!

8 a.m. Luckily, I live

close to the downtown Bentonville office, so the drive is a quick one. Once I arrive at the office, it’s time to start a day filled with back to back meetings about sponsorships, marketing needs, press releases, events, speaking engagements, Hollywood guests, etc.

12

12 p.m. I take a quick break between

meetings and usually snack on nuts or trail mix because there isn’t much time to step out for leisurely lunch with the festival only 6 weeks away.

2 p.m. Really thankful for my BFF team. This group puts in a lot of hard work and hours to help ensure this year’s festival will go off without a hitch!

5:30 p.m. When I leave work it’s usually to drive

home to continue working, but occasionally I have a networking event or kids basketball game to attend.

12 a.m. I finally

stop working around midnight (half our team is in LA) and the next day do it all over again. 13

GEENA DAVIS TREVOR DRINKWATER

15

W

e sat down with Bentonville Film Festival co-founders Geena Davis and Trevor Drinkwater for a little Q&A. Geena told us her favorite things about Bentonville, while Trevor was quick to answer what’s coming up at this year’s festival. How many films will be part of the Bentonville Film Festival? 37 films will be competing for the distribution prize. BFF is the only film festival that guarantees distribution for our winners.

GEENA DAVIS Flats or heels? Heels

quick hitters...

Go to cocktail? The Beena, of course!

{The Beena is Geena’s signature drink at BFF. It includes pH elderflower honey syrup, ciroc vodka, Meyer lemon juice, Perrier, and garnished with a bee pollen elderberry rim.}

How do you order your coffee? Decaf non-fat soy latte Your mentor? Roy London In your bag? Cell phone Must have travel item? Sunblock Can’t live without? My family Personally, Thelma or Louise? Louise Something most people would be surprised to know about you? I’m a master pumpkin carver. A typical day? No such thing Favorite Bentonville restaurant? The Hive What do you enjoy most about visiting Bentonville? Everything! I’m learning more on every visit.

Are you ready for the “A League of Their Own” softball re-match? I was born ready! 16

Do any of the films feature cast or crew members from Arkansas? Not that we know of, but last year our Dernsie winner wrote a script that took place in Arkansas. I know there are lots of talented filmmakers in the state and we are eager to meet and support them. {The Dernsie Award for best screenplay was sponsored by actor Bruce Dern and Jason Netter of Kickstart Productions.} Who are some of the celebrity guests taking part in the festival? We have so many celebrities coming to town. We’re not ready to publicize individuals yet, but we have a wide range of attendees that include a 2016 Oscar nominee and one of the stars from an internationallybeloved series of movies. Any interesting panels you can share details about? 1. Geena and Friends: Geena Davis and special guests read from all male movie scenes expanding our vision of rich voices and roles for everyone. 2. Socialtainment: In collaboration with Essence Magazine, this discussion will explore stories of women who have sparked change through the power of social media and entertainment. 3. From the Director’s chair: Directors share their candid insights on their creative process and working styles for creating their films.

Trevor, what is your all-time favorite movie (focusing on women and/or diversity)? Why? The Matrix. It was one of the first films I sold when I joined Warner and it featured an amazingly strong woman in Carrie-Anne Moss and a strong minority with Laurence Fishburne. I have since become friends with Carrie-Anne and she is an incredible woman which makes the film even more special for me. Trevor, who is your favorite female actress and why? Really?? Geena Davis, of course! Not only is she an amazing talent on screen, but she is more amazing in person. Brilliant, funny and an incredibly hard worker. No one compares. What do you hope festival-goers will take away from BFF? We hope they understand our mission is beyond critical and the timing is now to make meaningful change. We hope to convene decision makers to do just that so we can be measured on what we do more than what we say we will do. What was the most memorable moment for you from the first Bentonville Film Festival? Meeting the filmmakers and hearing about the journeys they all went on to get their films made. It emboldened us even more to double down on what we are doing as these filmmaker’s stories need to be seen by a mass audience. Did you have a favorite film screened at the inaugural festival? Trevor has two. The first is one of four festival winners, Jack of the Red Hearts which premiers on Lifetime this month and is so well made. Also, I liked The Incredible Adventures of Jojo and His Annoying Little Sister Avila. The film is so fun and unique. What are you looking forward to most about this year’s festival? We’re looking forward to watching all the great films and Trevor is excited about listening in on the panel discussions. 1

TREVOR DRINKWATER quick hitters...

You’ve been coming to NWA for a while now, what’s your favorite part about the growth? Downtown

Bentonville. It looks like a movie set! I also love the people. It is so great coming here from LA to see people smile, wave and say hello. It is very refreshing and so mainstream America.

Favorite Bentonville restaurant? Blu Fish Market How do you order your coffee?

By saying please first...then, just black.

Must have travel item? Phone charger for sure. I carry extras just in case.

In your breifcase? Same answer! Can’t live without? Family and new Samsung S7 phone. Why Bentonville? I love the town and the people. It’s

the perfect environment for BFF because we want it to be an inclusive event that’s open to everyone. What better place to hold BFF than in the quintessential small town of Bentonville? And, the fact that it made our acronym BFF didn’t hurt.

A typical day? Flying to Bentonville, when I’m not on the beach with my kids!

championing women and diverse voices in media

aking its debut at this year’s Bentonville Film Festival is the Bentonville Film Festival Foundation Inc. The BFF Foundation is a nonprofit organization focused on promoting women and diversity in the entertainment industry through research, education, mentoring and industry partnerships. The festival is the only one in the country that champions women and diversity while guaranteeing theatrical, TV and home entertainment distribution for winners. Festival co-founder Geena Davis has been instrumental in pioneering the largest body of research on gender prevalence in family entertainment over the last 25 years. In fact, the primary partner of the BFF Foundation is the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media. Together, the two organizations have lead a series of educational based panel discussions and symposia to champion and support women and diverse voices in the entertainment industry. Funds raised at BFF will be used to field research studies and fund content development, distribution and marketing. Additionally, the BFF Foundation is working to build awareness of and support for the Northwest Arkansas community arts programs. Locally the foundation has sponsored the Walton Arts Center’s Masquerade Ball, the Northwest Arkansas Women’s Shelter and the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank. A food drive will take place during “A League of Their Own” reunion game on Sunday, May 8, at Arvest Ballpark. One of the BFF partnerships (taking place during the 2016 festival) we’re most excited

about is with the Mercy Hospital Foundation’s Women with a Mission luncheon, where Geena Davis is speaking. 3W Magazine co-founders Kasie Yokley and Leslie Zanoff serve as chairs of the Women With A Mission steering committee, along with Martha Bergant. Through pooled resources and collaboration, The Susan Barrett Women with a Mission Society seeks to improve health care in Northwest Arkansas. The society brings together women from diverse backgrounds with a common goal of making a difference through the power of giving together. The satisfaction of knowing you are part of an empowered group of women who desire to make a difference in health care is a great feeling. During the inaugural BFF, Women with a Mission hosted a luncheon featuring actress and Arkansas native Joey Lauren Adams as the keynote speaker. Davis and Trevor Drinkwater, festival cofounders also addressed the group. The BFFF is seeking to grow the Bentonville Film Festival as the next ‘must see’ American destination and the most impactful festival in the nation today through its demonstrated commitment to research and action. Spring Time Sippin’ Who doesn’t like warm weather cocktails? They’re light, refreshing and easy to sip on while you enjoy the company of friends and family. Next time you’re having a gathering at home, why not try the new trend in entertaining – do it yourself cocktails!

ingredients

directions

Recommended flavors Absolut Berri Acai Absolut Raspberi Belvedere Orange Ciroc Coconut Ciroc Peach Deep Eddy Grapefruit Deep Eddy Lemon Stoli Blueberri Stoli Strawberry Smirnoff Pomegranate

STEP 2: Pick your flavors – rather than one or two bottles of plain liquor, try getting two to four different flavors in mini bottles. Most liquor stores sell pints and half pints of all kinds of great brands, so you can vary the types to help control cost. Here we’ve displayed Smirnoff Blueberry and Ciroc Peach.

Recommended Garnishes Basil Blackberries Blueberries Grapefruit wedges Lemon wedges Lime wedges Mint Raspberries Strawberries

STEP 4: Prep your display – you’ll need to put out a cutting board, some sort of sweetener (we recommend a variety of sweetener packets to keep it easy), a muddler and an ice bucket, along with glasses, and a measuring jigger. If you want to really up the ante, pre-make a few garnish combinations to inspire your guests to try something new, and print off the attached instruction sheet to display; make it easy on your guests!

Classic Vodka Soda 1 3/4 oz Vodka 4-5oz Soda Water

20

STEP 1: Pick your base cocktail – our basic cocktail of choice is a vodka soda. This will please most guests and is best for warm weather.

STEP 3: Pick your garnishes – you can make the spread whatever fruits and herbs your heart desires. We used blueberries, grapefruit, lemons, limes, oranges and raspberries.

STEP 5: Enjoy the party and watch the compliments come flooding in! Your guests will love the trendy vibe and the ability to craft their own cocktail, and you’ll love how easy it is! Created by Katy Cario of Ruth’s Chris Steak House.

A

s we settle into 2016, I’m working to incorporate this year’s trends into my clients’ homes. With so many new trends to choose from, it can be hard to narrow down: which will work best for your space? Which will withstand the test of time, and still look tasteful and current in your home in years to come? This month, I’ll be discussing a few of my favorite 2016 trends, and giving you my opinion on the best ways to incorporate them into your home. My first favorite trend of 2016 is an emphasis on retro and geometric styles. Retro designs can bring us back to childhood memories and time spent with family, and they can also look surprisingly modern when integrated correctly into your space. They are versatile and striking, and they’re classics – they won’t be going out of style any time soon. I love this striking chest: its bold red color and unique geometric handles are simply stunning. Incorporate this piece into your den or living room for a bold statement piece. Geometric prints can also come in a more neutral color palette, which is ideal if you’re hoping to blend a piece into a living room that is already fully furnished with bright, colorful pieces. I love this unique cabinet: the design on its doors is completely eye-catching and unique. I also love that a piece like this particular cabinet combines a geometric print with a finish that can fit almost any room style. This piece would pair perfectly with a room full of earthy wood textures, or even more rich, opulent metallic textures. This piece is highly versatile while still retaining its individuality. Eye-catching chairs are also an excellent way to incorporate a retro feel into your room. I love playing around with fun chairs, because they can easily be moved anywhere in your house to suit your mood and changing style. Whether you prefer utilitarian and metallic materials, or opulent and bold, a chair can be a playful and whimsical way to play around with adding a retro vibe to you room.

I’m also playing around with adding whimsical, floral touches to my home. There are the classic ways to do this: adding fresh flowers to your house, using floral prints to accent your walls, adding floral bedding to liven up your bedroom. These standbys are always a great option, but I want to experiment. In 2016, I want to try something bolder. I’m bringing touches of floral beauty into my home with pieces of furniture like the following side table – pieces that are bold, eye-catching, and playful. I love that this piece adds a familiar trend to your home in an unexpected way. The floral pattern stands out against the table’s black backdrop, and is striking and delicate all at once. These pieces will always be easily blended in with changing home design trends. Last but certainly not least, 2016 is going to be a big year for wood furniture in your home. In past articles, I’ve mentioned the major shift towards eco-friendly textures this year. This trend is continuing to grow, with wood being used in increasingly interesting ways throughout the home. I love this totally unique wood desk; its waterfall design is elegant, cozy, and clean all at once. Play around with wood elements this year! Whether you are looking to create a more natural, eco-friendly space, or looking to create a clean, unique vibe in your home, wood furniture is being used in new and exciting ways in 2016. A new year always brings with it many new trends and changes. I’m always working to keep my clients’ homes up-todate, and this month, I’m hoping to help my clients and myself prioritize. It’s important to pick trends that will withstand the test of time – you don’t want to jump on one trend, only to have it go quickly out of style next year. The trends are eyecatching and unique, while still being versatile and easy to blend in with changing trends. 1

are you the fastest and fittest? Miles for Mercy tracks spectator’s steps

N

ot sure we’re among the fastest, or the fittest … but we’ll still be participating in this year’s annual 5K @ The LPGA benefiting the Mercy Foundation Northwest Arkansas on Saturday, June 25. Taking place during the Northwest Arkansas Championship, the race starts at the Walmart AMP and winds its way through the streets of Pinnacle County Club’s neighborhood and community, onto the tournament’s signature hole, The Gatorade Loudest Hole on Tour – number 17 – and ending back at the Walmart AMP. Another fun part of the Foundation’s involvement with the LPGA is the Miles for Mercy program. At the Mercy tent, tournament spectators are given a pedometer to track how many steps they take that week. You can cover a lot of miles walking a golf tournament, just ask our photographers! We sat down with Kyle Brunen, Mercy Health & Wellness Program Manager, to find out more about Mercy’s involvement. 29

How many miles have been logged since starting Miles for Mercy? This is our fourth year for the Miles for Mercy Program. We estimate roughly 4,500 miles have been walked by spectators during the three-year history of the event. Nearly 10 million steps have been recorded. Tell us about the 5K @ the LPGA? We’ve really enjoyed the 5K that benefits Mercy. Last year, more than 500 participants raced on Saturday morning of tournament weekend. Each participant ran 3.1 miles for an additional 1,500+ miles total. That wasn’t a specific part of Miles for Mercy, but it’s still a great community wellness event associated with the Northwest Arkansas Championship. How much money has Mercy raised as a result of the miles that have been logged? For the first two years, the Mercy Foundation received a $5,000 donation upon reaching our goal of 500 miles walked by spectators. Last year, a $5,000 donation was awarded at the 5K @ the LPGA benefiting Mercy. P&G, the lead sponsor, also donated $5,000 – so we’ve received $20,000 in three years. 5K at the LPGA 2015 Winners

30

Volunteers passing out pedometers

How many pedometers are given out per year? We hand out 2,000 pedometers every year and anticipate giving out another 2,000 again this year. What can we expect this year at the 5K @ the LPGA? We have the Corporate Challenge as part of the 5K @ the LPGA. It’s an opportunity for companies, businesses, and organizations to represent themselves as a team while participating in the run. Any group of five or more individuals can create a team under a company, business or organization. New this year, the tournament will be awarding the “Fastest and Fittest” offices in Northwest Arkansas. Awards are presented to age groups, overall winners and corporate challenge winners. For more information , please visit www.nwachampionship.com. 1 What does Mercy do with the money that’s raised? Over the past three years, these donations to the Mercy Foundation have supported several different programs including our Reach out and Read Program – where Mercy kids receive a free children’s book along with their annual well child visit – as well as supporting our Women with a Mission Program, empowered women with diverse backgrounds who are dedicated to continuing the mission of Mercy’s founder, Catherine McAuley, by improving healthcare in Northwest Arkansas. In the past, Women with a Mission has enhanced the quality of care in Northwest Arkansas through the purchase of a Cesarean delivery operating room table, a BiliChek system for newborns, a breast ultrasound system, and support of our Ronald McDonald Family Room at Mercy Hospital. In addition, funds this year will go towards five feeding pumps – a vital part of daily care for NICU infants; and an infant hearing screening machine – providing a comprehensive hearing screen from ear to the brainstem, used to test the hearing of all babies.

CHICKEN & WAFFLES A

dynamic duo, fried chicken and waffles has become a comfortable Southern flavor, but at the same time, unexpected and inventive. “Who doesn’t like a little savory and sweet dish together,” asks Kris Dean, manager and innovator of this Ruth’s Chris signature snack. Hardy wanted for something that players and pros could easily eat while on the move. Leave it to Dean to come up with the creative combination of chicken and waffles. She says in addition to the hand-held treat, it was important to have something that that would represent the flavors of the South and character of Northwest Arkansas. Although Dean tries not to take full credit, the brilliant chicken-ina-waffle-cone meal was her idea. “Of all the ideas we presented to Octagon, the waffle cone won,” she laughs. It’s no surprise why this delectable dish won over the team’s taste buds. Held in a fresh waffle cone (sourced from Coldstone Creamery) the hand-held delight starts with piping in some amazing mashed potatoes from Ruth’s Chris with a sprinkle of cheddar cheese on top. Next comes the chicken. It's Tyson breaded chicken strips that are fried and then coated in a buffalo-maple syrup sauce. The chicken strips are then quickly grilled which caramelizes the sugars in the sauce and adds depth of flavor. The final layer on top of the chicken is a green apple, poppy-seed coleslaw which gives it a nice fresh finish. You can eat it layer by layer or combine flavors as you go. Is your mouth watering yet? The sad part, you’ll only find the delicious treats between fairways 9 and 18 during the tournament’s ProAm.

HOURS WITH

Eileen B. Jennings COMMERCIAL BANKER FOR ARVEST BANK

4:30 a.m. I can’t sleep.

It’s a combination of side effects from cancer treatments and being a dairy farmer in a former life. I like to get up early and spend some quality time in my sewing studio. It’s the one place that I can tackle a project from beginning to end and only have to deal with myself.

8 a.m. After dropping my daughter Scout off at

school, I jump into my portfolio of customers. I’m a Commercial Banker for Arvest Bank. My customers include local manufacturers, retailers, service providers and real estate investors. We work together to make their businesses grow and get stronger. I love visiting customers at their places of business and seeing how they operate. We have some great local businesses and you should support them!

12 p.m. Lunches are usually spent with

customers or volunteering. Currently I am the Board Treasurer for the Northwest Arkansas Land Trust and work with the Board and staff to help land conservation efforts in Northwest Arkansas.

36

2 p.m. If it’s a Friday, chances are I am at Highlands Oncology catching a session of chemotherapy. In December, we found out that my breast cancer had come back in my lymph system. To give me the best chances of it not reoccurring, I am undergoing 20 weeks of chemo and three weeks of radiation. It’s definitely hard, but important to me to continue doing (at least at some level) what I normally do.

5:45 p.m. If I’m feeling OK and the weather is nice,

I like to run a few laps around the field at our farm. Our old Labs like to join me, at least for the first lap.

6:30 p.m. Dinner is easy and these days

it’s something that can be thrown in the microwave or whipped up quick. In this instance, I went out to eat with my daughter at Khana Indian Grill in Fayetteville. Once we are fed, I start winding down fast.

8 p.m. Scout and I usually finish the evening with

reading or snuggles in front of a PBS show. I don’t look forward to the days when she is too old to snuggle with her mom.

9 p.m. Out like a light. I go to bed very early, but it works for me. Since my

sleep is fairly erratic, I just give myself more time to get eight hours in. I like to check my schedule for the next day and cruise through social media to see what I have been missing (not usually much).
