ADEC Headquarters Abu Dhabi UAE Address: Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates | Client: Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) | Project: Invited Competition 2009 | Size: 21.000 m2 + 15.000 m2 parking | Architect: 3XN | Engineer: Buro Happold A blend of innovation and tradition, 3XNs competition entry for the new Abu Dhabi Education Council Headquarters seeks to express modern day interaction between cultures in a world where understanding, and learning from each other is essential. Through an interplay of spatiality, visual interconnections, and areas for formal and informal meetings; the building encourages a behavior of exchange and dialogue within a multi-flexible environment. Standing as a true symbol of ADEC values, 3XNs design for the building will be a manifestation of pedagogy, flexible programming and leading edge technology in sustainability. The overall design of the building provides for shade and a light breeze under and around the building enhancing
7
the qualities of the near outdoor environment. The design of the faรงade aims at bringing in a large amount of natural daylight minimizing the use of electrical light, yet keeping out the direct heat gain from the sun. The central skylights of the atriums are designed to allow for the cool northern light to enter the structure but block any direct impact from the sun ensuring a naturally cool and healthy indoor climate. The simple structure of the building is assembled as a series of soft H-shapes, mirrored on top of each other to generate a course of interlocking decks that create an interesting variation of interior spaces alternating between single and double height spaces. This extends to six levels above ground, with two levels below ground for parking and the auditorium (including back of house functions). The layout of the floor decks create visual sightlines in a vertical neighborhood, allowing employees to feel they belong to the ADEC community through the visual stimulation of activity around them.

Beirut Office Tower Beirut, LB Address: Beirut, Lebanon | Client: The Lebanese Company for the Development and Reconstruction of Beirut Central District s.a.l. | Competition Proposal 2010 | Size: 24,200 m2 | Architect: 3XN Stretching in an undulating movement towards the sky, the pleated façade of the Tower reiterates itself every four floors, leaving the impression of a modulated scale, designed to match a human oriented approach to working, living and walking in the city. The design aims at a close formal connection between the three parts of the tower – the podium with the lobby, cafés, shops and a health club, the tower with its offices and the crown with a green rooftop terrace - thus creating a more unified whole acting to establish the tower as an iconic landmark for the area. Moreover, it creates a desirable outward gesture towards the public realm, communicating the Office Tower as an integrated part of the neighborhood, adding liveliness, spatiality and dynamics to the street life.
11
The folded building envelope is designed to maximize views addressing the open landscape towards the Mediterranean Sea and the mountains in the background. There is a behavioural perspective as well, with the carefully selected design encouraging interaction and communication between employees and general work divisions. The individual floors benefit from the overall variation, niches and the great lay-out flexibility; the facades are equally playful, subdivided and modulated to match a comfort scale for people. The dominating vertical and horizontal partitions of the local area are reflected in the façade of the Tower, adding a recognizable rhythm to the building. Yet the façade of the new development has been designed to stand out against the existing and planned urban fabric – the visionary design expressing a dynamic architecture by folding the façade and thus customizing it to the specific climate of the region and the demands of a flexible office facility.

Multi-purpose Arena Middle East Address: Middle East | Client: Confidential | Completion: Competition 2010 | Size: 56.000 m2 | Architect: 3XN The centrifugal power of the whirlwind is interpreted into this dynamic and vibrant Arena design, reflecting the energy and growth of the Middle East region. The metaphoric Arena generates a strong architectural and visionary icon defined by the idea of the whirlwind. The ‘jet streams’ from the whirlwind form integrated shaded corridors, which meet and extend the lines of the area and thereby create a close connecting between the building and its surroundings. The bright shapes of the modulated ribbons are seemingly spinning about the bowl – a play on the term whirlwind moving across the desert sand. The double façade makes the building seem light, luminous almost translucent, and allows a hint of the activities going on inside the build-
15
ing. Besides being a decorative barrier between interior and exterior the façade design ensures that all interior spaces are shaded at all times, yet allowing plenty of light to enter the building. Maximizing the amount of natural daylight and at the same time keeping out the heat of the sun saves energy significantly and secures high quality indoor climate. The multi-purpose Arena is designed to accommodate the widest range of events from ice hockey finals to international mega concerts. The flexibility of the design furthermore allows for the conduct of a wide variety of events within a very short period of time. Characterized by its iconic design, effective layout, the elegant interior and LEED platinum rating, the Arena meets the highest international standards within aesthetics, functionality and sustainability.

Art Gallery Abu Dhabi, UAE Address: Abu Dhabi, UAE | Client: Confidential | Size: 4,200 m2 | Architect: 3XN A blend of elegant functionalism, careful climatic considerations and modern Arabic culture, the new Gallery seeks to express cutting edge architecture as a natural setting for exhibitions of a world class standard and the innate framework for encouraging public life in the area. Through the interplay of flexible spatiality, spectacular views, and comfortably shaded spaces for exhibiting, meeting, dining and working; the building encourages behaviour of refined contemplation and artistic dialogue. The conditions of the site required an analysis of various natural elements and their particularities for the local region - and have shaped the origami like form of the building. The structure adapts throughout the day to the changes of sun, daylight, wind and water, reflecting even the smallest movements on the water surface. The close link between the water and the building is emphasized and strengthened by the careful design of the views across the bay.
19
The most important feature of the overall design of the building is that it provides for shade under and around the building, thus enhancing the qualities of the near outdoor environment. The folded building structure expresses a powerful iconic architecture, itself with inherent sculptural qualities. Seemingly floating above a public art-plaza, the Gallery is supported by dynamically triangulated pillars enhancing the landmark identity of the design. The design of the faรงade and building roof aims at controlling the amount and quality of natural daylight into the building. The Gallery space is designed to allow for a maximum of flexibility. A generous open floor without any visible structural elements makes out the primary part of the possible exhibition area. The Gallery space can be subdivided into any layout imaginable and thus changeable as collection, focus and artistic demands may change in the future.

Abu Dhabi Education Council Design Concept Typical Schools Competition 2009 Design Description
3XN’s architectural strategy for cycle 3, sub-urban/urban schools was highly inspired by the idea of unity. The functions of the brief – school, swimming pool, multipurpose area and soccer field lent themselves to a natural convergence around a central courtyard unifying the functions and contributing to natural social interaction. These dynamics are further enhanced by the feeling of being enveloped and protected by one whole and unique entity – a roof landscape. With reference to the natural landscape of Abu Dhabi. Emphasis is placed on the urban scale of the building and more importantly, a human scale for the students. The roof-scape of our proposed design is a soft urban structure which creates a visual landmark applicable in a wide variety of contexts. Subdued and reminiscent of the natural desert landscape of the Emirates, it conveys ideas of nature, easily interacting with neighbouring sub-urban and urban surroundings. Architecturally very unique, yet unimposing – it is a natural shelter protecting against the sun and wind. Urban Scale
The unifying role of the roof-scape creates an open urban community underneath. The school, the swimming pool and the multi-purpose area create a very pleasant central core which acts as the heart of the building full of life and activity. The design allows for a high degree of flexibility, which can emphasize a number of differ-
23
ent programming requirements: Fluid sightlines from the central courtyard, transparency, possible partitions, public access to sectioned off areas after teaching hours – all while emphasizing values of social interaction through the central courtyard. Human Scale
Within the school itself, our concept incorporates overlapping floor-plates which create visual connections and allow for interaction on a wide variety of levels. This element has an effect on synergy as students and teachers can easily survey the activityin the school. We propose a flexible layout which can be configuredin ways that allow for a mix of traditional and non-traditional teaching spaces - which can be used for group-work or more informal learning environments. The concept takes advantage of the shading function of the roof, allowing also for outdoor teaching areas on terraces throughout the different floor-plates. It is our experience that these characteristics contribute to new ways of learning and teaching. 3XNs proposed concept aims to bring students, teachers and their ideas together under a dynamic landscape, contributing to an inspiring and efficient environment for present and future generations. Through the outer roof-scape, the urban and the human scales – this school is very much about unity. As our world becomes more global – social skills take on increasing importance in every culture and for every gender.

Museum of Liverpool Liverpool, United Kingdom Address: Mann Island, Liverpool | Client: National Museums Liverpool | Award: 1st prize in Invited competition 2004 | Completion: 2005-2011 | Size: 12.500 m2 | Budget: DKK715m / €95m | Architect: 3XN | Landscape Architect: Schønherr | Engineer: Buro Happold | Awards: Miami Bienal 2006 Silver Medal, Scottish Design Awards 2010, Engineering Design, IDA Award 2008, Best Urban Design Located at the UNESCO World Heritage Site between the Albert Dock and the Pier Head, and next to a row of prominent historic buildings dubbed ‘The Three Graces’ the museum building is conceived as inclined or elevated platforms, gradually forming a sculptural structure. Fully accessible it will contribute to the public promenade flow along the Docks. Situated at the Pier Head, the museum is visible from both the river and the city. The nexus of the building, the central staircase is crucial to the museum, and during the design process it was
27
studied thoroughly in sketches, 3-D renders, and in physical models. The atrium serves as a public ‘living room’ as well as entrance lobby, providing connection to the exhibition spaces which are dispersed around it. The new Museum of Liverpool ambitions to become the World’s leading city history museum, showcasing social history and popular culture and will look at Britain and the world through the eyes of Liverpool. It is estimated that the new museum will attract at least 750,000 visitors on a yearly basis, but already two weeks after the opening 150,000 people have visited the museum. The Museum stands as a symbol of Liverpool’s ongoing regeneration, and the hoep is that the city will be elevated into the front rank of European tourist destinations, as well as providing a brilliant place for local families to find out about their own history.

Saxo Bank Copenhagen, DK Project Type: Corporate Headquarters | Address: Philip Heymans Allé 15, DK-2900 Hellerup | Client: Saxo Bank | Size: 16,000 m2 + 6,700 m2 basement | Completion: 2008 | Architect: 3XN | Engineer: Rambøll | Awards: RIBA International Award 2009 Saxo Bank is a young, dynamic, internet bank with a strong presence in online trading of the global capital markets. The new head office in Copenhagen is designed by 3XN. Iconographic Head Office In spite of the fact that Saxo Banks’s clients primarily meet their bank in cyber space, the physical gesture of the head office is of great importance to the bank’s management, who took a great interest in the design process. This was not only due to the client’s interest in the creation of a building endowed with iconographic qualities, but also to the conviction that architecture and design plays an important role for staff performance and dedication to the company. Architecture Reflects Dynamic and Expressive Identity The architecture takes Saxo Bank’s cutting edge profile as its point of departure. Main lines of the structure explore the balance between dynamic expression and trustworthy solidity, executed with an eye to the frame-
53
work constituted by planning constraints and intentions. Conceived as two logs facing their gable ends to the canal, joined together by a retracted glass façade, the Saxo Bank building combines curves and sharp angles in a new interpretation of modern seaside architecture. Colours of the sea and the sky in the green glass and white façade elements interchange in the cut-up structure with a lot of X-shapes reminiscent of the letter X in the name of the Bank. Facades are carried out as double curved glass walls. Open Structures Inspire Team Spirit Inside, a transparent and inspiring environment enhances the sense of team spirit. The open plans centre round a softly shaped top-lit atrium with a winding main staircase. The trading floor located at the top of the building contains state of the art technology and a highly international staff of professional bankers.

KPMG Frederiksberg, Denmark Address: Osvald Helmuths Plads 4, 2000 Frederiksberg | Client: KPMG | Assignment: Acquisition |Completion: 2008 - 2011| Area: 32,500 m2 offices, 1,300 m2 shops, 24,000 m2 parking | Architect: 3XN Bringing Life to the Area Placing the accountancy firm KPMG’s new Danish Headquarters on the “Revygrunden” (revue site) between Dirch Passers Boulevard and the metro entrance at Flintholm Station has its great advantages; one is that it brings life and activity to the city district during the day, when residents of the area are at work. This way the constellation of business and trade mixed with dwellings forms a symbiosis. A new major workplace will also strengthen the area around Flintholm Station, which will benefit from the increased flow of people. Connecting the Surrounding City Functions KPMG’s domicile will enter into a strong unity with the surroundings in all directions: The west-facing cultural plaza with the culture house; the southern plaza with cafés and eateries etc.; the green belt facing east; and the metro in the northern direction. The main ’clover’-shape of the domicile is created with these different directions in mind and the new domicile creates a link to three cityscapes at the same time. Altogether, KPMG’s domicile will contribute to a concentration of the neighbourhood and to making the area much more lively and friendly.
61
Clover-Shape Means Easy Navigation The designs for the house include two main entrances: One for KPMG employees and one for other tenants. The entire building is situated on an elevated base, which creates a varied expression and pulls the green areas into the building niches. The clover-shape of the building solves a well-know problem associated with large office buildings: they often seem confusing and easy to get lost in. The clover-shape divides the building into smaller sections and at the core the individual loops are interconnected in a natural centre. Compared to a regular boxshaped building volume, the clover-shape makes for an interesting change and brings a lighter and airier sense of space to the neighbourhood. Zero Energy Consumption The building is constructed with a great focus on sustainability at all levels from design to construction, choice of materials and lifespan. Thus for one, the level of energy consumption will be reduced to a mere minimum close to zero by controlling the inflow of light, by heat regulation through the use of an active façade elements with solar screening, by angling the building according to daylight and by a strategic orientation of the interior office space also accordingly.

The Two Leaning Towers The two hotel towers stand close as a pair, yet seem a little shy; the towers incline in opposite directions. The reason for this is to obtain an unobstructed view from all rooms in each tower of the flat landscape. The sky was not the limit in this case; flight safety requires a max tower height of 75m (25 floors) this close to the airport, so one tall tower was not an option.
New Landmark on Copenhagen Skyline A new landmark hotel and conference center designed by 3XN is first step of the long-anticipated extension of the Bella Center; Copenhagen’s famous Congress Center. With more than 800 rooms the hotel is the largest hotel in Scandinavia and has also turned out to be a new landmark for Copenhagen. Beside the many rooms the hotel includes several restaurants, a skybar, fitness and spa area and extensive conference facilities.
Integration with Congress Centre Wind considerations as well as a wish for a landmark signal caused the top twist of one tower, while the wish for a clearly indicated entrance caused the ground floor twist of the other tower. The hotel lobby is merging into the existing entrance lobby of the Bella Center, making the hotel a true integrated part, ready for large events like the Copenhagen International Fashion Fair; this time with rooms for rent.
