We wanted the pattern to be something that spoke to the specific nature of the project and its location. The project incorporates two distinct zones: 1
Fort Collins’ old town; a romanticized historical district: lacy, decorated, human scaled.
2
Fort Collins’ industrial district: a mixture of large scale steel-age infrastructure and tranquil pastoral moments along the Poudre river.
Designing the screen, we actively pursued something which would speak to history, perhaps even a ‘feminine’ history. Something that would speak to simple ‘masculine’ industry, something that would speak to nature. Something that was both new & old; Both robotic and romantic. The pattern, at its most basic, is a hybrid of a simple cube and a simple petaled flower.
Many different variants on this theme were drawn. Compositional concerns and the constraints of the laser cut aluminum helped us determine the pattern that we would use. (seen on the following page)

5 SCREEN & STRUCTURE EXPLODED AXONOMETRIC SCALE:
1 MECHANICAL ATTACHMENTS THROUGH SCREEN Often these sorts of decorative screens attempt to hide or overwhelm the supporting structure. SCALE: 3/4" = 1'-0"
Because we wanted something that spoke not only to fancy, but also to industry, we decided to celebrate the structure and incorporate it into the pattern as much as we could. The more we incorporated the structure into the pattern and cut of the individual screens, the stronger the pattern became.
