CANOPY HOMES Schematic Design
I frequently tramped eight or ten miles through the deepest snow to keep an appointment with a beech-tree, or a yellow birch, or an old acquaintance among the pines. - Henry David Thoreau, 1817 – 1862
SITE PLAN: CANOPY HOMES
CANOPY HOME SITES
Do not be afraid to go out on a limb ... That’s where the fruit is. - Anonymous
DESIGN OBJECTIVES: CELEBRATE LIFE IN THE CANOPY: • open plan and glazed walls allow resident to feel connected to the forest • allow trees to natrually provide shade and privacy • house is simply organized and constructed; the intricacy of the tree canopy is the ornament
OPEN PLAN WITH ENVELOPE OF GLASS, HOUSING LIVING SPACES STRUCTURAL CORE, HOUSING UTILITY SPACES
VERTICAL CIRCULATION DESIGN THE HOUSE TO PERFORM AS THE TREES PERFORM: • • • • •
convert sunlight to energy store water provide shade provide habitat look beautiful!
ORGANIZATIONAL AND STRUCTURAL CONCEPT: Utility spaces such as bathrooms, kitchens and closests are contained within a simple structural ‘core’. This volume is rooted to the earth and largely solid. It provides much of the structural integrity of the house, allowing the larger volume to remain open in plan and fully glazed.
Keep a green tree in your heart and perhaps a singing bird will come. - Chinese proverb

ROOF CONCEPT: The two roofs perform as two leaves; the valley of each roof collects water, the top roof drains onto the lower roof, the water is collected for reuse

It is not so much for its beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men’s hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air that emanates from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit. - Robert Louis Stevenson
ROOF LEVEL PLAN Scale: 1/8” = 1’-0”
I think that I shall never see A billboard lovely as a tree. Perhaps, unless the billboards fall, I’ll never see a tree at all. - Ogden Nash, Song of the Open Road, 1933

Of all the wonders of nature, a tree in summer is perhaps the most remarkable; with the possible exception of a moose singing “Embraceable You” in spats.

Facade Design Influence
Vegetation Most dense is the Canopy Layer, which coincides with the living level. The forest density assists in shading and providing privacy; its density will reduce the need for dense facade screening in some locations.
Views Views are desirable at all levels, but are most critical at the living level and the rooftop lookout. Response of facade: screen density decreases from bottom to top.
Privacy
Thermal Comfort Heat Gain / Daylighting
Privacy is more desirable at the bedroom levels than at the living level and rooftop lookout. Response of facade: screen density decreases from bottom to top.
Facade Screen Design Influences

RAINFOREST LAYERS
Emergent Layer
Due to the assistance of the forest, heat gain will affect upper levels more than lower. Conversely, the additional sunlight at upper levels will provide more daylight at public spaces and less at bedroom levels, which is desirable. Response of facade: screen density remains constant.

ROOF CONCEPT: Large overhangs provide both protection from the elements and shading. They may eliminate the necessity for connector roofs in many instances, depending on specific site characteristics. Water is collected in gutter and downspout systems or shed directly onto adjacent landscape.
