DESIGN OBJECTIVES: CELEBRATE LIFE IN THE CANOPY: • open plan and glazed walls allow resident to feel connected to the forest • allow trees to natrually provide shade and privacy • house is simply organized and constructed; the intricacy of the tree canopy is the ornament

ORGANIZATIONAL AND STRUCTURAL CONCEPT: Utility spaces such as bathrooms, kitchens and closests are contained within a simple structural ‘core’. This volume is rooted to the earth and largely solid. It provides much of the structural integrity of the house, allowing the larger volume to remain open in plan and fully glazed.

Vegetation Most dense is the Canopy Layer, which coincides with the living level. The forest density assists in shading and providing privacy; its density will reduce the need for dense facade screening in some locations.

Views Views are desirable at all levels, but are most critical at the living level and the rooftop lookout. Response of facade: screen density decreases from bottom to top.

Privacy

Thermal Comfort Heat Gain / Daylighting

Privacy is more desirable at the bedroom levels than at the living level and rooftop lookout. Response of facade: screen density decreases from bottom to top.

RAINFOREST LAYERS

Emergent Layer

Due to the assistance of the forest, heat gain will affect upper levels more than lower. Conversely, the additional sunlight at upper levels will provide more daylight at public spaces and less at bedroom levels, which is desirable. Response of facade: screen density remains constant.
