WHEN ZOSEN MET MINA MIX AND MATCH. When Zosen and Mina met for the first time in 2011 at a workshop in Barcelona, one thing was immediately clear to both of them: We have to work together. Since then, they have been travelling around the world painting artworks on large walls. And we can all be thankful. Because their vibrantly colourful mural pieces, which are created spontaneously and intuitively, are simply one of a kind. “We like things colourful and wild and never work with outlines. Colours and forms should flow into one another seamlessly and create a harmonious whole in the end,” says Zosen. We liked the sound of this and flew the two artists to Buenos Aires to breathe new life into an old house wall. By the way: Along with Zosen and Mina Hamada, many other artists and designers work to make the Wever & Ducré brand shine – year in and year out.
Als sich Zosen und Mina 2011 bei einem Workshop in Barcelona zum ersten Mal trafen, war für beide sofort klar: Wir müssen was zusammen machen. Seither bereisen sie den Globus und bemalen überdimensionale Wände mit ihren Kunstwerken. Dafür können wir alle dankbar sein. Denn ihre farbenfrohen Wandgemälde, die ganz spontan und intuitiv entstehen, sind einfach einzigartig. „Wir mögen´s gerne bunt und wild und arbeiten nie mit Outlines. Farben und Formen sollen fließend ineinander übergehen und am Ende ein harmonisches Ganzes ergeben“, meint Zosen. Hört sich gut an, fanden wir und holten die beiden nach Buenos Aires, um für uns eine alte Hausmauer wieder zum Leuchten zu bringen. Übrigens: Neben Zosen und Mina Hamada arbeiten noch viele andere Künstler und Designer daran, der Marke Wever & Ducré den richtigen Glow zu verleihen. Und das jedes Jahr aufs Neue.

That is why Anastasia Su and Martin Lesjak are completely focused on “transferring the creative energy of a brand to the product itself”. This is reflected in the ROCK COLLECTION, which the Austrian designer team developed exclusively for Wever & Ducré. Made from natural shale veneer with varying degrees of transparency, which makes every luminaire completely unique. A material which, by the way, fits right in with their philosophy. In their design studio, founded in 2013, they prefer to work with structures and surfaces that are decidedly distinctive and full of character.
Deshalb konzentrieren sich Anastasia Su und Martin Lesjak ganz darauf, „die kreative Energie einer Marke auf das Produkt zu übertragen.“ Wie bei der ROCK COLLECTION, die das österreichische Designerteam exklusiv für Wever & Ducré entwickelt hat. Aus natürlichem, unterschiedlich transparentem Schieferfurnier, das jede Leuchte zum absoluten Unikat macht. Ein Material, das übrigens ganz zur Philosophie der beiden passt. Denn in ihrem 2013 gegründeten Design-Studio arbeiten sie am liebsten mit charaktervollen Strukturen und Oberflächen.
For Hein Vanderwalle, good design is like love at first sight. “Design has to move you, and touch you deeply in some way. From the first moment. I find it does that best when it is clear and timeless.” In recent years, that philosophy has been the inception of many extraordinary products, such as BISHOP, SHIEK, and WETRO, in the design collective 3H Draft, together with Andreas Hierzer and Andrea Paroli.
Für Hein Vanderwalle ist gutes Design mit Liebe auf den ersten Blick vergleichbar: „Design muss dich berühren und etwas in dir auslösen. Vom ersten Moment an. Das tut es für mich vor allem, wenn es klar und zeitlos ist.“ Daher entstanden im Designkollektiv 3H Draft, gemeinsam mit Andreas Hierzer und Andrea Paroli, in den letzten Jahren zahlreiche außergewöhnliche Produkte, wie BISHOP, SHIEK und WETRO.

You can learn new things from old ones. JULES WABBES Designer
Jules Wabbes (1919–1974), who had a penchant for finding new ideas at flea markets, must have had the same thought. It’s no wonder people said that the Belgian architect and furniture designer had a unique eye for shapes and materials. And that is apparent in his countless designs even today. A primary example: The chandelier, developed in the 1970s, whose futuristic, floral form is as much at home in a modern bar as in a posh hotel lobby.
So oder so ähnlich könnte Jules Wabbes (1919–1974) gedacht haben, der sich gerne auf Flohmärkten nach neuen Ideen umsah. Kein Wunder, dass man dem belgischen Architekten und Möbeldesigner einen ganz besonderen Blick für Formen und Materialien nachsagte. Und der ist in seinen zahlreichen Entwürfen bis heute sichtbar. Bestes Beispiel: der in den 1970er Jahren entwickelte Kronleuchter, dessen futuristische, florale Form sich in einer modernen Bar genauso gut macht wie in einer edlen Hotel-Lobby.

That’s why Serge & Robert Cornelissen work primarily with materials that allow their minimalist designs to shine through. The Belgian designers are passionate about aluminium. “When it comes to light, playing with transparency is particularly compelling,” says Serge Cornelissen. The symbiotic combination of these preferences is impressively demonstrated in the clear geometry of VENN, winner of the iF Design Award.
Deshalb arbeiten Serge & Robert Cornelissen auch vorwiegend mit Materialien, die ihre minimalistischen Designs besonders gut zur Geltung bringen. Aus Leidenschaft setzen die belgischen Designer daher auf Aluminium. „Wenn es um Licht geht, ist das Spielen mit Transparenz besonders interessant“, sagt Serge Cornelissen. Die symbiotische Verbindung dieser Vorlieben zeigt sich eindrucksvoll in der klaren Geometrie der mit dem iF Design Award ausgezeichneten VENN.

And with WIRO, Bernd Steinhuber accomplished exactly that. What inspires this designer, born in 1972, the most? Everything he encounters. Which is why he doesn’t go anywhere without his little sketchbook. “Ideas are fleeting,” he says, “and they don’t keep office hours.” That’s an attitude we admire. Because the most beautiful things are usually found just when you are not looking for them. So keep your eyes open!
Und das ist Bernd Steinhuber mit der WIRO auf jeden Fall gelungen. Wovon sich der 1972 geborene Designer am liebsten inspirieren lässt? Von allem, was ihm begegnet. Deshalb hat er sein kleines Skizzenbuch auch immer mit dabei. „Ideen sind flüchtig und halten sich nicht an Bürozeiten.“ Eine Einstellung, die uns gut gefällt. The good old light bulb has heated more than it has illuminated since Edison’s times. But that’s history now. Today’s modern lamps are considerably more efficient and are also much easier on our wallets. An LED puts out up to 20 times more light than an incandescent bulb, and can be directed much more effectively because of its positioned light emission. Not to mention their durability. WHAT A FEELING IT REALLY TURNS YOU ON
Light has a tremendous influence on our subconscious. Just a bunch of hocus pocus? Not in the slightest. Because the colour of light influences our sleeping and waking cycle, our circadian rhythm. Cooler light temperatures (> 3000$K) help us wake up, and warmer temperatures (< 2700$K) help us relax. Neutral light colours (> 3500$K) are the ideal backdrop for our day and are particularly well-suited for the office or workplace.
DIE MACHT SIE RICHTIG AN Licht hat eine große Wirkung auf unser Unterbewusstsein. Klingt nach Hokuspokus? Von wegen. Denn die Farbe des Lichts unterstützt unseren Wach- und Schlafzyklus. So helfen uns kühlere Lichtfarben (> 3000$K) beim Wachwerden und wärmere (< 2700$K) in den Relaxmodus zu schalten. Neutrale Lichtfarben (> 3500$K) begleiten uns perfekt durch den Tag und eignen sich deshalb perfekt fürs Büro oder den Arbeitsplatz.
DID YOU KNOW? Ready for a physics lesson? Here we go. How colours are perceived depends on the spectral distribution. If a light source has a complete spectrum, colours are especially vivid – almost the way we see them in natural light. Light quality is evaluated using the so-called colour rendering index (CRI), which ranges from -60 to +100. On the CRI, the higher the number, the more vibrantly colour is perceived.
SCHON GEHÖRT? Lust auf ein bisschen Physikunterricht? Bitte sehr. Wie Farben wirken, hängt von der spektralen Verteilung ab. Besitzt eine Lichtquelle ein vollständiges Spektrum, wirken Farben besonders lebendig. Fast so, wie das bei natürlichem Licht der Fall ist. Bewertet wird die Lichtqualität mit dem sogenannten CRI-Index (Colour Rendering Index), der zwischen –60 und +100 liegen kann. Dabei gilt: Je größer der CRI, desto lebendiger wird die Farbe empfunden.
