WE NEVER KNOW TIME UNTIL. . . . . 2020

Reception center of a construction project Banqiao District, New Taipei City, Taiwan

01

C h a pt e r 1

For humanity, time is an intricate thing, and we have never stopped discussing this for thousands of years.

In this project, I want the visitors to feel “time” is not only a theory but surrounds them once they walk in.

Here’s a question: How to make people sense time?

02

C H 1 - P R O LO G U E It's seemed no edges, no boundaries when we're trying to observe the form and structure of time, it might be non-linear, even annular. The speed of time seems to be largely determined by how much information our minds absorb and process — the more information there is, the slower time goes. This connection was verified by the psychologist Robert Ornstein in the 1960s

city CENTRE of banqiao

SUBURb of banqiao

marine life of tamsui river

We live in the urban areas that time passes rapidly because there is so much information and people we have to deal with every single day, so here in the suburb, I hope this project would deliver an opposite impression from the downtown.

03

C H 1 - S I T E & CO N C E PT There's a brook near the site of this project, the Tamsui River. She is the most well-known river in Taiwan which contains a plentiful history and nationality. Hundreds of years passed, Tamsui River is still there no matter which group of people took over this island. She is the river of Taiwanese history, she is the river of time. I feel things moving slow every time I go for a walk next to her. T h a t i s t h e e x p e r i e n c e I w a n t t o p re s e n t to the visitors, busy people escaped from city and finally got here to find peace. I took a creature called “Calcinus gaimardii” as my concept, its kind lives in Tamsui River, their skeleton will be grounded on the shore when they are dead, then someone who needs a new home would take it, on and on and on..... And also this project has a commercial purpose, selling real estate for the construction company. It's interesting to use the creature, which lives in a shell and one day might move out, as the concept of design.

CH2 - ISSUE Decades ago, people who chased the life with fortunes and substances came here to make their dreams came true. After all, the function of the smelter no longer exists, it becomes ruins with the only appearance for people to memorize the time this place was prosperous. I want to unveil the new value of this place, not just observe the ruins from the facade, but create the spaces with inspiration and imagination.

So, what am I going to do?

I want people to look through the appearance of ruins to see the substance this place really has, once more and more people could see the value of art and culture under the surface (with spirit, as the greatest artists do), the new impression (collective unconsciousness) of ruins will rise.

I analyzed the 13 layer remains from the fields of substance, culture, nature, and art from the very first time this industrial area was built to the present. After the smelter was abandoned, the value of history and culture has begun to be seen and preserved. I think further about the meaning of the ruins and their value, then extend the concept into spatial planning, bring the potential of spaces out.

CHAPTER 3

INFINITY 2019

Assistive Technology Centre Tanzi District, Taichung City, Taiwan

53

C h a pt e r 3

In Taiwan, retired elderly people often gather together to chat and interact, the place where they often gather is under the tree next to the temple.

In Taiwan, elderly people living in old neighborhoods are also used to going to the bulletin board on the roadside to receive information. H o w eve r, re c e i v i n g i n f o r m a t i o n i n t h i s t ra d i t i o n a l w a y i s n e i t h e r efficient nor comprehensive, and sometimes not even completely correct.

So I want to renovate this assistive technology center that will not only provide communication between the elderly but also disseminate real-time and correct health information so that the elderly can obtain the correct information and disseminate it to friends.

54

C H 3 - P R O LO G U E Taiwan has been facing an aging population for several years, and the rate of population aging has even surpassed that of Japan, and the needs of the elderly have been paid more and more attention. Old people in Taiwan like to chat with their neighbors under the tree next to the temple, many people who didn’t know each other in the past also knew each other in this kind of social situation. So in the community of the elderly, the transmission of messages is quite fast.

“My son just get promoted...” “Exactly!” “Oh, good for him!”

“You should try octopus.”

“Yeah, I heard it works.”

“My back has been sore lately...”

“The government $^$#%&...”

Chat separately

“No! Not octopus, is...”

Chat unitedly

Most of the Taiwanese elders’ life is getting along with friends, and they often lack mobility, so usually don’t stay too far away from home. Over time, their life circle is shaped, they are afraid of stepping out of their comfort zone and afraid of contacting new things.

55

I analyzed the reasons why the elderly like to sit and chat under the tree, because the tree provides a cool space to cover the blazing sun, and people are eager to find shelter in an open place. Therefore, for the elders to naturally access the information of assistive devices, a comfortable environment must be provided first.

In terms of spaces division, I also want to start from the psychological side, the neat cutting surfaces make visitors feel the invisible boundaries. On the contrary, the interior of the spaces divided by flat edges is softly curved. 56

C H 3 - D E S I G N & s k e tc h e s

I want to create an assistive technology center that is different from the past, so that the elderly can connect with the familiar environment and habits, at the same time they can sit down and chat with friends.

CH3 - DESIGN

Create spaces below the ceiling indoors to reduce visitors’ anxiety in an unfamiliar environment.

The design using Gestalt psychology makes visitors able to distinguish different areas, even without solid walls.

The blue area is mainly for static activities, and the red area is mainly for social and activities.

The blue route is the main entrance, leading to the massage area and the bazaar; the red route is the secondary entrance, which allows the elderly to chat with friends and participate in activities.

I use polished concrete as the new surfaces of the walls. Its stable and thick characteristics give visitors a sense of simplicity and make people concentrate on interacting with each other. C H 4 - P R O LO G U E “How about CHUNGLI?”

As a construction with a special purpose, the International Space Station is a field that provides researchers with a gravity-free environment to conduct various experiments, and these experiments will increase the possibility of human exploration in the universe. To make a long story short, the establishment of the International Space Station is the first step for mankind to explore the universe. And the goal of this project is like the ISS, which is the first step in urban planning to attract people to explore new areas.

Because our boss cooperated with a café and opened a shop there.

THE EMOTIONS OF MATERIALS The entire building is covered with Aircraft-Grade Aluminum alloy, which is strong and can withstand acid rain in the industrial area; I brought the space life far away from civilians into normal life. Through the aluminum alloy surface, the whole building immediately reminded people of aerospace technology and outer space.

Tempered Mirror

Brushed Aluminum

Tempered Glass

I covered all the beam-column structures with mirrors so that people can barely see the columns and beams when viewing the building from a distance. The walls of the basement are also covered with mirrors. When visitors look out from the glass wall extending from the first floor to the basement, they will feel that the space has an infinite extension. And I use a large area of glass as the exterior wall, which not only makes the original design that conflicts with the landscape less intense but also blends with the surrounding environment to a certain extent.
