Located in the north-west corner of the campus, which is characterized by an orthogonal plan, the 11.000 square-meter building serves all faculties and it is in constant use by some 2.200 students and lecturers that cross its spaces every day. CUBE is anchored to the landscape by paved pathways that guide users to its entrances on the south-side corners. It is a secluded space for study that feels like an opening in the woods. More than any other building in the campus, the new Education and Self Study Center is a building for students: open and spacious, elegant and robust. Inordertosecureafree-owing,openbuildingandto avoid any sense of crowding, the heart of CUBE is a spaciousindoorstudyplazaankedbyatranspare auditorium and two patios. KAAN Architecten in collaboration with Estudio Lamela, ABT and Ineco, with the support of Arnout Meijer Studio, DGMR and Planeground, will design the new terminal at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The spatial organization of the new 100,500 m2 terminal, its design and the treatment of its façades, are based on the ability to link up with Schiphol Plaza, the train station and potential future expansions. This is achieved through architectural clarity, spatial openness, and details such as overhangs and black eaves. At the heart of the building, a raised Plateau creates a higher ceiling for the baggage hall and gives the checkin and security control area more privacy. Here passengers have a sweeping view over an entrance hall that is superbly crowned by a latticework of light, allowing travellers to take in the big Dutch sky. MaterialssuchaswoodooringonthePlateauand lush greenery in the large light wells above the security control area communicate elements of sustainability inherent in the design.

Located in the city centre of Groningen, the project aims to offer an urban living room for the residents, designed as a place for creativity that is accessible, cosy and full of entertainment. De Vrijdag Woonkamer (Dutch for ‘the living room’) replaces a large part of a 16th-century urban block, situated between historically signicantmonumentsandtheGroningenForum, the new urban landmark. It blends in with the environment but creates a ‘twist’ in the traditional brick architecture: through the large openings in the facade, the city can look at all creative activities inside. Taking the unique advantage of the site, the project aims to form a new border between the city and the landscape: the convergence of the two is especially important. The project creates an active urban ground yet it grows out from the landscape. The grid of towers is rotated in relation to the surrounding buildings, thus facing the waterfront directly. The towers are lightweight mirages above the green landscape, set apart from the hard city in the background. In this cluster, three towers make a soft composition of horizontal lines. The building is independent, crowning the edge of the waterfront but at the same time embedded into the landscape. With its natural soothing image, it invites inside the liveliness and activities from the waterfront.

The study for the Ferrazópolis complex was initiated as a part of an ‘Urban Operation’ by São Bernardo do Campo city. The core of this development is located at a rather strategic point. The intersection of 7 inner-city bus lines, the inter-cities bus terminal and the terminal station of the cable car transport for Montanhão, create a multimodal node within the city, rendering it a crucial landmark for its future development. It is estimated that on an average day 60,000 visitors will pass through the terminal. A substantial partofCityHall’sadministrationofceswi relocated here, relieving not only the already over-burdened Paço Park, but also stimulating the neighbourhood’s economic activity. Alongside the terminal hub, a mall, a convention centre, ahotel, housingandofcesarealsotobe found, all organized around a public square and generating a diverse urban environment.

Food, is a daily necessity. It becomes a carrier of our lifestyle, cultural values, family traditions, and even personal ideologies. It is also a topic that connects people and together contributes to the greater planet. We need radical and structural changes to re-balance the needs of humans and the environment. Overthedecades,weareobservingtheever-ren division of labour due to urbanization. Currently the consumers have strong needs to secure the food sources with transparent traceability. However, they have little knowledge of the production process and the latest upgrades. How to re-connect consumers with the food supply system? How to make consumers appreciate food more?

1.3 SEASONAL LABORS AND WESTLAND HOTEL New Settlement Pattern for Temporary Labors Story in Westland Hotel
New Westland Hotel to Convert the Living Pattern One of the root causes of imperfections of the living conditions and the simplicity of the time line in their daily life is that this temporality and seasonality is forced. The instability lies in the Polish workers’ job opportunity, which turns this “Permanent housing- temporary living” into a passive relationship.
Since in the Westland agriculture plays an important role, labor workers have always been an important part of the population composition. Generally, there are around 10.000 EU seasonal workers live in Westland. In different months, temporary labor requirements in the Westland. The busiest months are from Apr to Jun, the labor need drops in Jan and
The new element I brought in the Labor system is this courtyard, which I transfer from an ancient village in China. The interesting thing is the rooms which are in building’s ground
Westland Hotel, which has a long contract with a Polish labor agency, is a “permanent temporary living” place of Polish labors, and it is also a center point of one of this temporary labor systems. We can basically trace their daily living pattern through the survey of this certain hotel. Also, the cars and buses have been chosen as the element of this survey. From its way of driven, we can see where are these people from, where are they live, and the timetable of their daily life.

1: Temporary working period starts and ends with the 10 hours’ driving from Poland to the Westland. The labors’ temporality is due to the jobs’ instability. 2: Workers’ typical living pattern is: every morning get together at the agency hotel parking space at 5:30 and sent to working place by the Agency Buses. After a whole day’s work, they will be sent back and offered dinner at a certain time. 3: Some of the workers stay in the agency hotel and share room with other workers. 1.5 BRIDGE THE ISOLATION Preliminary Solution in the Culture Isolation
Through the pass of time, after Polish labor get more stable life materially . The gap between the Dutch people and Polish people in this area will be deeper. Actual, with more job opportunity got by the Polish in the Netherlands, the anger of the Dutch people and the gap between the two groups are growing. Following the storyboard, we can imagine how it will be in the future. jobs and some stay here permanently. But the gap between them will still exist. Their live here is all linked with their job. The political lives are taken away, they are living as the INCLUDED EXCLUSION. The projection is based on the previous estimated proposal, to discuss the possibility to offer an opportunity to bridge the isolation in such a culture gap. The linear park, as a spatial solution of this estimated situation, acrosses the actual boundary built by peed way and brings a connection of the original church, primary school, expanded agency institutional center, parking areas and public buildings (recreated in the greenhouse). In such way, I am proposing a future to bridge the isolation.

Technical Plan
Design-Base Agenda
Settlement network
Ghana is under industrialization and urbanization, road network has huge potential if integrated with waterway and railway, which is analyzed and tested in the 20 years plan. Ghana’s road network is meanwhile a potential universal territory which could unite local communities to be a national network, to help local urbanization within an order, which is discussed in three visions of interventions. - UNIVERSAL TERRITORY Our group focus on the national level of road network. We anatomise Ghana’s national road network by making a 20 year national plan, and then three individual interventions are based on the common vision that road is part of national economic system. As a principle, we regard the road as both a national network with economic potential
Phase 0 Current situation Phase 1 Backbone formation Phase 2 Maximize potential From 2014 to 2034, the proposal is to construct 630km railway, 2050km trunk road 11ports as the development of key corridors. Meanwhile, 2350km of rural roads, 1900km of urban roads will be constructed as feeder road of the infrastructure network.

2.2 FROM STOPPING TO LOCAL FLOURISHING Notion on Local Production Chain National Efficiency
Local Flourishing
In the Ghana highway plan, building a backbone from north to south is a crucial improvement to the inequality development in Ghana. However, the road which is planned following the national agenda. Bottleneck lies in the northern area is that the people there couldn’t get appropriate income. For example, the last few kilometers of transport cost led to a huge problem. In the national road. So the situation becomes: no reliable, proper feeder road and trunk road with low utilization rate. Hence, people just follow this trunk road, move to the southern Ghana. In this extent, the
In the southern area, it is actually the chaos and the stopping brought by the congestion makes the infrastructure an universal territory. The people pass by and the people inhabiting on the road formed an infrastructual community, achieving the social interaction and the economical function at the same time.
Look into the food industry system in Ghana. Most of their manufactures are born from small and informal, always near the logistic space. Also, mostly, occur in the southern area, where there are people gathering together. In this extent, the national I use the shape of circles to project several interventions when the road system hit the logistic space. By using circle as a symbolic form, I try to mark the territory and address the public attention to the local production chain. Provide a better accessibility, Enhance
In the Northern Area The food production chain is simple. Most of the activities are happening at the beginning of the production chain: from producer to manufacture, which are in the southern Ghana or abroad. The road situation here is either not accessible or only have the logistic function.
In the Southern Area In some cases, domestic or foreign investment start the process of formal industry. Meanwhile, most manufacture is born from small and informal. Starts from the moment people gather together and the form of retailing is vendor. The road here combine the function of logistic and market. The chaos street helps to achieve the local economic and social agenda.
From top to down: 1. Food production starting point 2. Collection point 3. Field storage 4. Village storage 5. Local factory 6. Industrial areas 7. National wholesale market
63
2.3 GHANA SWITCH In particular, I designed the circle on village storage. I built a ring road with the radius of 10m, width of 3 meters direct crossing the national backbone and pass through the periphery of a food collection point of a rural village. By putting essential - infra structure, streetlights and market platform inside it, this ring road creates a zone to attract people. By rearrange the function of this ring road and giving incentives inside this zone, it will become a place gathering people, and stimulate the local food industry. It
In the future, people living in this village may not need to go to Kumasi to sell a bit food and live on the street. They can work near their home in the daytime, dancing in the collection square in the night time. 0

Complex Projects MSc 2 IN Cites studio has been working on the city of Shanghai for two semesters (2018 fall - 2019 spring) with two groups of students, and the support from CAUP, Shanghai. This exhibition is to give a general impression of the work done by students, as well to express the attention drawn by the studio. IN Cities: Shanghai started with a broad research of the context: on history, urban infrastructure & water system, economy & policy, culture & demography, and architecture identity. Afterwards, it has focused on the use of public space and its relationship with commercial activities. Taking the knowledge and understanding gained in the research, students posed questions and tried to tackle them by research/design projects. The studios have brought up reading on the fragmented nature of Shanghai urban tissue, established a dialogue on the different under-
66
standing of public space in the urban environment and raises the notion on particular topics: Community in Urban Development; Use of Space in Public Infrastructure; New Urban Centre; and Hypothesis in Megacity. This exhibition consists of two parts: collective research (wall) and individual/ group projects (glass boxes). Within the research, we are showing: a TIMELINE formulating the general context we have been looking into; a SERIES OF MAPS showing the reinterpretation of selected area; GROUP RESEARCH MATERIAL from 6 groups as evidence of the narratives to be established. Meanwhile, we are showing selected material from students’ projects. The purpose is not to cover everything students have worked on, but to stimulate the connection between different projects, to reinforce the notion risen collectively and post questions to the audiences.
