Preface About Shoestring Book Publishing: Shoestring Book Publishing will edit, proofread, format, and self-publish your book for about a third of the price of most other book designers, including CreateSpace, Outskirts Press, Author House and Lulu! We publish poets and novelists who otherwise couldn't afford to have their book prepared for publishing and self-published! We are poets and novelists ourselves, as well as avid book designers, editors and proofreaders. We have an understanding of the poets and the novelists mind, that we incorporate into the design of every book, so that not only is it professionally designed, but it is a mere work of art! Shoestring Book Publishing is an inexpensive means to selfpublish books and information manuals. If you write poetry, short stories, essays, fiction novels, non-fiction novels, or simply wish to publish your Genealogy and make it available to the public for sale or just for friends and family members to read, we do everything from editing, proofreading, graphic design book cover design, book formatting, typesetting, ghost writing, book proposals and help with self-publishing and marketing tips. The cost for most books is only $5 per page. Authors receive 10% off their first book! Contact shoestringpublishing4u@gmail.com for more information.

Chapter 1 About Shoestring Book Publishing

Firstly, we’d like to thank you for your interest in Shoestring Book Publishing for your book publishing needs. We are a small, albeit, big hearted, self-taught, book Designing / SelfPublishing Service, happily nested in the beautiful State of Maine, USA! We began our journey as Shoestring Book Publishing, in the year of 2012, when we realized, how much joy we would receive, sharing the knowledge and expertise we’d gained, from Self-Publishing several of our own books. We are two people, with a passion for writing and SelfPublishing Poetry Books, Science Fiction Novels, and SelfHelp Spiritual Books. We believe in Love, as Love, is the principals and/or qualities, we run our quaint business by. We value our customers with enormous empathetic respect, and encourage you to inquire with us, as many questions as you wish, about Self-Publishing. We are always welcoming to your feedback, about your self-publishing experience with us, and on how we can improve our rapidly growing and ever dynamic little business! We are available to talk by phone anytime internationally, given a scheduled appointment. Otherwise, you may reach us during 9-5 EST Monday through Friday. You may email us at any time you wish, with questions or concerns at shoestringpublishing4u@gmail.com. Please allow up to 48 hours for response to most emails. You will have several chances to make corrections and changes to your book, during and after the designing process. Corrections generally do not incur an extra fee, whereas changes do. You will receive a PDF proof when we have completed the design process. After that, we will upload the PDF of your book to CreateSpace, where they will issue us a Shoestring Book Publishing

5

CreateSpace PDF proof within about three days. We will then email the CreateSpace PDF proof of your book to you for another round of review. When you are satisfied with the way the CreateSpace PDF proof looks, we will go ahead and order you, your galley hardcopy (paperback version) of your book, and we will mail this to you via standard shipping, to the address you have provided us in the Book Formatting Form. Standard shipping: May be delivered by USPS or UPS. Estimated delivery date for standard shipping will be 15 days from date of order. With shipping and printing approximately 16-18 days. Once you’ve received the galley hardcopy of your book via mail, we then ask you to review this galley copy, and let us know of any further corrections or changes. After you have approved the Galley hardcopy, this is the time to let us know what you would like to set the price of your paperback book at. The paperback book published through CreateSpace, will entail a Minimum List Price. The minimum list price is based on a Minimum Price Threshold, determined by CreateSpace, in respect to the sales channels chosen. (Also, page count and whether your book is in black and white or color effect the minimum price threshold of your book) Below is a description of The Minimum Price Threshold, exactly as described by CreateSpace:

“Minimum Price Threshold” “The minimum price threshold is based on the manufacturing and distribution costs for your title. We do not publish titles with list prices below the minimum price threshold.

6

Welcome Book

Your title's minimum price threshold will vary based on your currently selected sales channels.

You can lower your minimum price threshold by changing your selected sales channels.

If you set your list price at the minimum price threshold, you will not earn royalty payments on all of your selected sales channels.

In some channels, the minimum list price may be greater than the manufacturing and distribution costs. In this scenario, you will be required to set your list price higher and receive a higher royalty.”

Shoestring Book Publishing will choose all of the available distribution channels for your book, unless you indicate to us otherwise on the Book Formatting Form. Here is an example of all of the available distribution channels through createspace: Standard Distribution FREE

If you’ve purchased an ebook, or an ebook is included in your package, your ebook will be published through Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing, where we will include your book for the offers available through KDP select. If an ebook is not included in your package, and you wish to purchase one for 69.95, you may do so, at The Store, at our website. Also, please indicate that you wish to have an ebook published when you fill out the Book Formatting Form. Within the pages of this book, contains everything you’ll need to know about the self-publishing process. You will find instructions on how to order books, how royalties are distributed, shipping information, terms and conditions, and public relations information (marketing). If at any time, you wish for us to stop work on your manuscript the cost of the work we have completed up to that point will be pro-rated. Please notify us by email ASAP. Half of your payment will be due after we’ve received your manuscript, and you’ve chosen the fonts for your book, so that we may do a page estimate. Turnaround time for the second down payment will be approximately 1-2 weeks. At which time, we will issue you a detailed bill with an invoice via email. Estimated total is subject to change based on any additional text and/or pictures you may choose to add to your book thereafter. We will date the invoice for the second down payment to be due in 10 days’ time. We will not continue any 10

further work on your book at this point, until we have received the second down payment. The remainder of the balance will be due after you’ve received the CreateSpace PDF proof, in which you’ve approved. After you approve the CreateSpace PDF proof, we will issue your final bill, or the remainder of your balance to be due within 10 days’ time. At this point, the bulk of the work has been done, and we still encourage you to review the paperback galley hardcopy of your book for corrections and/or changes, which you will receive in the mail by standard shipping, unless you advise us to ship it otherwise. Standard shipping for paperback books within the U.S. will take approximately 16 to 18 days, depending upon where the business days fall, and if there are any Holidays present. Also, certain weather conditions may affect the estimated delivery date of your book. Galley copies which ship outside of the US will take on average one month to arrive based on the same conditions listed above. We will let you know when your book ships, this way you can know when to expect it to arrive. If you wish to upgrade the shipping from Standard Shipping, please let us know, and we will invoice you for the cost difference. The first galley copy of your book is free with Standard shipping only. For any other form of shipping, you will receive an invoice issued from PayPal. If you’d like to pay by check, please let us know by email. Thanks again for choosing Shoestring book Publishing! Sincerely,

Chapter 3 You’ve made your $50.00 down payment, now what?

You’ve made your 50.00 down payment, now what? Here is an overview of what we need from you to design your book efficiently: The time to edit your poetry is now. Once you send your manuscript, your job of editing is done, for better or for worse. Once we receive your manuscript additional edits that you wish to make will incur a charge, of 1.00 per page. Please provide by email as a word document, PDF, RTF, copy and paste email, or Allpoetry list as a manuscript in the order your poems are to appear in your book. Once you issue us the manuscript, if you wish for your poems to remain in the order provided you must instruct us to do so in the Book Formatting Form. By completing the Book Formatting Form, you are giving us the instruction manual on how to build your book. It is your responsibility to tell us exactly how you want your book designed. If you do not instruct us within The Book Formatting Form, to arrange your poems in a particular order, and later decide after the PDF proof of your book is issued, that you would like to rearrange, remove, or add any poems, there will be an addition charge. Please provide all material in your edited manuscript. The fee for rearranging, removing, or adding any poems AFTER the PDF proof is issued to you, by us, is 5.00 per page. Corrections are mistakes in the proof. But if you wish to change things in the language, or punctuation that are not incorrect, that is an edit and not a correction.

Shoestring Book Publishing

17

If you have purchased the professional Poetry Book Publishing package with correction editing and proof reading, this includes punctuation and grammar , but does not include substantive editing changes in the language. Basically, material which is already correct that you wish to change, is not included. Substantive editing is .05 cents per word. Before we begin work on your manuscript, you will receive a document of four sample font styles which you may choose from. Once you choose your font from this list, or give us the specific fonts you would like for your book, this is the font your book will be designed in. If you decide to change your font after you’ve received your PDF proof, there will be an additional fee of 25.00 for font changes. If you choose to have you pages facing, meaning two page poems will face on left and right pages, we cannot guarantee we will be able to keep your poems in the order you have issued them to us, because we must rearrange the poems. If you wish for your poems to stay in the exact order you’ve issued, we will not be able to face your pages. If you choose to have your poems on facing pages, it is your responsibility to let us know if there is a certain poem you wish to be the first poem in the book, and/or the last. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to instruct us on how you want your poems to be arranged within the Book Formatting Form, along with all other details that entail Book Formatting. Oh, and have fun!

Chapter 4 Font Examples to Choose for Your Book

Font Selection Font selection helps determine the aesthetics of any book. There is no reason for you to study and become a font expert. We have created four examples of font styles. All you have to do is pick one from the attachment and email us the name. We have included four sets which we call:    

Formal Academic Fancy Folksy

Take a look and either choose which you like or tell us you do not care and we will choose what we think is appropriate for your writing. Keep in mind, we will not likely use exactly the fonts shown, but they will be from the same family and have similar characteristics.

Formal:

Edgar Allan Poe

Academic:

Sonnet Sixty-Four When I have seen by Time's fell hand defac'd The rich-proud cost of outworn buried age; When sometime lofty towers I see down-razed And brass eternal, slave to mortal rage; When I have seen the hungry ocean gain Advantage on the kingdom of the shore, And the firm soil win of the wat'ry main, Increasing store with loss, and loss with store; When I have seen such interchange of state, Or state itself confounded to decay; Ruin hath taught me thus to ruminate – That Time will come and take my love away. This thought is as a death, which cannot choose But weep to have that which it fears to lose. -

William Shakespeare

Fancy:

Sonnets from the Portuguese 43 How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight For the ends of being and ideal grace. I love thee to the level of every day’s Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light. I love thee freely, as men strive for right; I love thee purely, as they turn from praise. I love thee with the passion put to use In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith. I love thee with a love I seemed to lose With my lost saints. I love thee with the breath, Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose, I shall but love thee better after death. -

Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Folksy:

Nothing Gold Can Stay Nature’s first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf’s a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay.

Chapter 5 How to save an image as 300 dpi, using Gimp

Many authors who publish a book with us, will have at least one picture in their book, and that is the Author’s Biography Picture. This can be any picture you favor of yourself. A headshot, or maybe a picture of you doing something you enjoy, like sports, or being artistic. All that the Author’s Biography picture requires, is that it is a picture of you! This will give the reader a visual image of the author of whom they’ve read, or are reading. We recommend including an Author’s Biography Picture with your Author’s Biography, although it is not required. Any action which helps the reader connect with the author is a good/positive one! When you submit your Author’s Biography picture to us, via email, as a picture attachment, or copy and paste to the email content, it is best if you make sure your image is at least, a minimum of 300 dpi. To ensure that the image you are sending is at least a minimum of 300 dpi, simply right click on the picture, and then choose properties. It will tell you in properties, what the dpi of your picture is. Dpi stands for Dots Per Inch. All of the pictures you send us for your book must be at least 300 dpi. If you do not present your images to us for your book’s interior, and cover, in at least 300 dpi, There is no guarantee that the images will not be blurry when printed in the book’s hardcopy. If for any reason, you cannot submit your images to us in 300 dpi, please let us know in your email when you send the pictures, and we may make the images 300 dpi for you, at a cost of 3.00 each. There are other picture programs in which you can adjust the dpi of your images besides GIMP, such as Photoshop. We suggest GIMP, because it is a free program.

26

Welcome Book

You can download GIMP, a free picture editing software. Here are the instructions on how to save an image as 300 dpi. To ensure top quality when we upload your book's file to CreateSpace, please submit your pictures to us in 300 dpi.

We will provide a detailed report of your royalty earnings quarterly, from the proper distribution channel. (CreateSpace, Lulu, KDP). CreateSpace, Lulu and KDP, charge a fee for each book sold. Each self-publishing channel mentioned, will set a minimum ‘list’ price for your book. The amount which you mark your book up from the ‘list’ price, which is the ‘retail’ price, will be the amount in royalties earned, dependent upon the sales channels selected. Here is an example:

66

Welcome Book

When self-publishing your book through CreateSpace, listing your book only on the CreateSpace estore will produce the lowest minimum list price possible. When you select amazon.com the minimum list price for distribution will increase by 33.3% of whatever the initial minimum list price is through CreateSpace. For example: Minimum list price for 124 page full color book listed on the CreateSpace estore is 11.92. Listing your book through CreateSpace only on the CreateSpace estore, will produce the lowest minimum list price possible. Minimum list price for a 124 page book with full color listed on Amazon.com is 15.89 Minimum list price for a book published through any one, a combination of, or all three of CreateSpace’s "Expanded Distribution Channels" such as, Bookstores and Online Retailers, Libraries and Academic Institutions, and CreateSpace Direct will increase the minimum list price of your book by, 50%. Minimum list price for 124 page full color book through CreateSpace’s Expanded Distribution Package is 23.83. That's double the initial minimum list price for said books, sold through the CreateSpace estore alone. Whatever the minimum list price is for your book, anything you choose to mark the book up from there is all profit.

Shoestring Book Publishing

67

Depending on which channel your book is sold through, will determine the royalties that you receive. Let's say you chose the Expanded distribution Package for your book, and you priced your book at 24.99, since the minimum list price for the EDP is 23.83. Someone purchases your book at the list price of 24.99 through the CreateSpace estore, you will earn 13.07, for the sale of your book, since the minimum list price for your book sold through the CreateSpace estore is 11.92. Let's say a company purchases one of your books at wholesale through CreateSpace Direct, you would earn 1.16 in royalties, since the minimum list price for that channel is 23.83. This all falls under the stipulation, that you've chosen CreateSpace’s 'free ISBN' for your book. Your book must have an assigned ISBN, in order to be sold through any distribution channel. A distribution channel is any one of the sales avenues mentioned earlier, such as the channels which fall under CreateSpace’s standard distribution package such as the CreateSpace estore, Amazon.com, Amazon Europe; and all of the channels that fall under the free expanded distribution package that CreateSpace now offers, such as bookstores and online retailers, libraries and academic institutions, and CreateSpace Direct.

You may change the ‘retail’ price of your book at any time. The retail price must be above the minimum list price set for the sales channels selected.

68

Welcome Book

You may add or remove sales channels which are available to you for free through CreateSpace, or Lulu at any time. Please notify us by email or phone and allow us 72 hours from time of request for us to make changes. Also, take into consideration; changes in sales channels through CreateSpace or Lulu take applicable amount of time to take effect. You may request a title to be retired from publication at any time. Please allow up to 72 hours for us to initiate such changes. Once a title has been retired, re-publishing the same title will be available for the applicable time through CreateSpace, Lulu or KDP. If you retire a title, and wish to un-retire a title, we will be happy to do so at no extra charge, as long as the title remains available to be unretired. You may choose to have Shoestring Book Publishing create you, your own account through CreateSpace or Lulu at any time. We will upload your book to an account which we will teach you how to manage for free, and hand over to you. Please keep in mind, that once you opt to manage your own books account through CreateSpace or Lulu, Shoestring Book Publishing is no longer responsible for distributing royalties for your book, nor do we hold any responsibility regarding the publication of your book, whatsoever. At the end of each tax year, we will provide a summary of your yearly royalty earnings, via email, privately. Shoestring Book Publishing

The file will take a couple minutes to upload. Once it is finished, Click save and continue. Under verify your publishing territories choose 'worldwide rights - all territories' Under 'Choose your Royalty' choose 35% or 70%. I always choose 70% but this is up to you. If you choose 70% your book price must be between 2.99 and 9.99. If you want to price your book above or below that choose 35% royalty. Kindle does this as a way to keep your book price between the frame they want it. That is my best guess. If you want your book in Kindle Select, you must choose 70% royalty. This is KDP's rules. Social Media Marketing: All of the advertising we do of your book through our social media outlets is part of any of our publishing packages. Social media is just one way you can promote the sales of your newly self-published book. Here are other ways you can promote the sales of your book: Local Bookstores: Purchase through us, through print on demand, even a small amount of your books, and try to sell them to small local bookstores. If you are trying to get a poetry book into a bookstore, this is the best way, as opposed to going straight for Barnes & Noble, and becoming discouraged if they say they will not carry your book. You can purchase the books through us, (directions on how to do so are included in this welcome book) and try to sell them that way, or you can show the small bookstores a copy, as a sample of your book, and if they like it, and agree to carry it, you can simply place an order through us for the amount of books they have agreed to carry, and we will have the books mailed directly to that bookstore. You can agree to sell the books to the bookstore for x amount of dollars, and whatever they receive in addition, as profit will be the difference from the retail markup price of the book. Or, you can tell the bookstore that your book can be found on Ingram, and they may order copies of your book there. In which case, the distributor will determine your royalties, through wholesale distribution. Poetry Readings: Attend a local poetry reading. Get out there in the wonderful world of poetry, and become familiar with poets like you, and others who are interested in just coming to a local coffee house, or wherever the poetry

reading is held, and get your work out there! If attendees like your poetry, they may purchase your book! Bring copies of your book, and sell them for whatever you like. Offer to sign the copies of the books that you sell. It is also a good idea to have some type of promotional business cards, or bookmarks printed up, to promote your book. If you have an ebook published through Kindle under our account, we can schedule a free 5 day ebook promotion to run at the time of your poetry readings. Simply send us an email to let us know. Traditional Publishing Houses: If we’ve designed your book, we will be glad to act as your literary agent upon request. Details can be found in the ‘terms and Conditions’ included in this Welcome Book. Book Fairs: Attend book fairs to promote the release of your book. Bring an ample amount of copies with you, as you attend these book fairs and other promotional items as well, such as bookmarks, posters, magnets, and anything else you wish to have designed to help in the promotion of your book. You may have such promotional items made up for you through Vista Print. If you would like us to have these items designed, simply send us an email with your inquiry, and we will get back to you with the pricing. But remember, this is the information age! All you have to do is type ‘book fairs’ into your web browser, and voila! You will get tons of listings of Book Fairs. Want to narrow the search to your area? Simply type Book Fairs, and then your area afterwards. You never know who you will run into at a book fair. Maybe an infamous literary agent, or someone from a Traditional

Chapter 20 How to Write a Book Proposal

If you are interested in selling your book to a Traditional Publishing House, such as Random Books, you may need a Book Proposal to make your submissions. It depends, really, on what the Traditional Publishing House calls for in the submissions guidelines, which you should ALWAYS read and follow to the T, before making submissions to large and small presses. A Book Proposal is just one of the requirements a large or small press may request for submissions. If you would like to write your own book proposal, below are the steps on how to do so. If you would like to employ us to write a book proposal for you, you can purchase one at The Store, at our website. We always guarantee to match any other company’s prices, for the same services, of the same quality. We’ve ‘shopped around’ and from what can see, our book proposals are less than half the cost of most other places. Samples of Book Proposals which we’ve written are available upon request, and can be emailed. Classification of Books Novel: Over 40,000 Words Novella: 17,500 to 40,000 Words Novelette: 7,500 words, to 17,500 Words Short Story: Under 7,500 Words Book Proposal Step # 1 - Summary Write a summary- of about 1-2- pages long. This will be the beginning of your proposal. The summary enables editorial boards to quickly take in the important features of the book.

It also inspires confidence in regards to your ability to put a book together. Include here: - A brief description of your book. - The manuscript details (Page count and how quickly the book can be completed.) -Special editorial features, a bulleted list of what makes this book standout from an editorial and publishers perspective. - List of chapter titles. -One or two sentences about the authors. - A fifteen or less word sales pitch for the book. - Key sales and marketing features, four or five bulleted points about the book. - Sales channel information. Where this book will sell especially well. - Comparison with the key competition. Step #2 Overview. A one or two paragraph summary about what will be included in the book. This should read like the blurbs on the back of the book. It tells the publisher in a compact form what the book is about, who the market is, and mentions a small bit about the author. Step #3 About the Author. This section provides detailed information about you. Why are you qualified to write this book? What is your education? Have you published before? Do you work in the computer industry?

98

Step #4 The Market. Whom do you envision the audience for your book? Why would somebody want to buy the book? How will the audience be reached? For example, are there some magazines aimed at the same audience which your book has been written for? Are there any special conferences on this subject? (When and where?)In this section you should be as numerical as possible. If you're talking about a fanfiction novella for instance, discuss how many books were shipped in the previous year, and how many readers there are in the audience. Step#5 What other books are in print on the same subject? You can research this at Amazon.com books Step #6 Annotated Table of Contents. A detailed chapter outline with a paragraph or a page describing what each chapter will consist of. The more detail you incorporate the better. Step #7 Sample Material. Chapter 21 How to write a press release

There are many companies you can find on the internet, that will write and distribute a press release for you, such as Piece of Cake PR, and ireach by PR Newswire. If you want to learn how to write a press release, just as anything else you want to learn in this day in age, all you have to do, is type into your search engine, whether it is Bing, IE, Google Chrome, ect, ‘How to Write a press release, and presto, many sites which can teach you how to do so will pop right up. The basic format for a press release is as follow:

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Date/timing Release Date Title Location Paragraph 1 is the Introduction Describe your book: Who, What, When, Were, and Why! 7. Authors Biography 8. Contact details for author.

Make sure your books press release is limited to one page. Press releases are good for submitting to magazines, radio stations, T.V. stations, all of the appropriate like. You can snail mail your press release to the media, or you can email it to the media. We can write a press release for you, for 99.00. We would advertise it on our social media sites, and

Shoestring Book Publishing

email it out to our mailing list. Any other promotional work of your press release, would be up to you, the author. Lots of local libraries have T.V. time on a local station. Speaking to someone at your local library who is in charge of the T.V. media, about getting your press release advertised on their T.V. time and station, would be a great idea. Maybe you can publish it in the local newspaper, for instance, if you are from Middlesex County New Jersey, you could contact the Home News Tribune. What is the local newspaper in your area? Another idea, is to advertise your book in your local coupon value pack. You could include a discount code we can provide to you through the CreateSpace estore upon request. Whatever percent off you desire, as long as your book doesn’t fall below the minimum price threshold.

Chapter 24 About Poetry Chapbooks

Poetry chapbooks, are on average about 30 pages, give or take a few pages and are saddle bound, or perfect bound. When gathering poems for a poetry chapbook, you would choose poems from your poetry collection, which are based upon a similar theme, such as love, spiritual, humor ect ... The normal contents for a chapbook include a table of contents, an acknowledgements page, the chosen poems and an author's biography. The acknowledgements should include the names of your poems which were previously published and where they were published. Poetry chapbooks are an excellent way to represent a collection of your best works, such as Poems that have been accepted for publication or have won prizes. Regardless of the material you choose to publish in your chapbook, there are no rules are to what constitutes the contents. over all, it is best to stick with a theme, but they may contain a varied array of topics, whatever you choose to use, consider the overall mood. You could use an epic poem, to tell a story throughout the chapbook. Maintaining some sort of organization with the placing of your poems is key, because you want to keep the reader interested. Once you place the organization of your poems, read through it and see how well it flows. Reading a poem aloud is a great technique to help decide how well it flows. One way to differentiate your best poems from all the rest is by feedback.

Shoestring Book Publishing

113

Was the poem chosen for publication in a journal? What type of comments did you receive from readers? Always pick your best poem as the first poem to be placed in your chapbook. Keep the number of poems per page to one. You want to make sure each poem receives the attention it deserves. Use a sans serif font for your body like Garamond or Minion and a Serif font is recommended for the title font. Publishing a chapbook of poetry is a good way to inexpensively share your poetry with friends, family and poets alike. Normal Retail pricing for chapbooks will run about 5 to 10 dollars each. If you are looking for publication with a large or a small press, arranging a chapbook for submission is a good place to begin. Many small presses and literary magazines will accept unsolicited manuscripts in lieu of contests held for chapbook publication. Still, regardless of being accepted for publication by a large or a small press, the author should expect to volunteer his or her own time into the marketing as well. 12 pt. is a nice size font for poetry books, for most fonts like Times New Roman. Be consistent with the design of your book, such as the spacing between the title of the poem and the body of the poem and number your pages, making sure

114

the page numbers match the table of contents. You can use 1' margins for the top and bottom, or 0.5, depending on preference, and a gutter of 0.75, and design your poetry chapbook in a word processor, like Microsoft Word. The best size book to self-publish is 6 x 9, as this is the most widely accepted book size by distributors. Proofread your manuscript several times. Chapbooks are a smart way to display the best of your poetry. You can include a photograph of yourself on the back cover, with a biography, or a description of the book.

Chapter 25 Punctuating Poetry!

With punctuation, it is really whatever you decide you would like to do with your poems. There are really no set rules on how to punctuate poetry in a book. As a proofreader and editor, however, of poetry, I do have my opinions about how to properly punctuate a poetry book. Whatever you decide to do, in regards to the punctuation of your poetry, I think that the main concern should be consistency. That's not to say that each and every poem in your book should be punctuated the same way, but that each poem that you proofread should have consistency, therein. For example, If you are editing a poem and you notice that there is punctuation, such as periods, exclamation marks and question marks, at the end of the sentences, yet none of the sentences begin with capitalization, that is inconsistent. If you are going to choose to use punctuation within your poem, make sure that you also capitalize the first letter of the word following the punctuation. If however, you find that you've attempted to punctuate your poem and it just isn't justifying the flow that you wish to represent within your poem well enough, then you may remove all of the punctuation from that poem and that is acceptable, because it is consistent. There will simply be no punctuation, to guide the reader as to where one thought ends and the other begins, but letting the readers know where to pause in a poem's sentence can also be accomplished by line breaks. Whether or not you choose to use punctuation in your piece, you may capitalize the first

Shoestring Book Publishing

117

letter in the beginning word of each line of your poem, this is a choice of personal preference. Decide how you want your poems to come across to the reader and which style of punctuation, or non- punctuation suits your poem's style and message best. Whatever you do, don't capitalize the first word of a poem and only add one period at the end of the poem, six stanzas later. This is an example of poor punctuation!

Along the way we will edit and proofread your book for you, if you wish, Publish a paperback to Amazon, and a hardcover to Luiu, and provide a FREE cover and ebook, for your first book self-published with us and 10% off the total. Nothing gets published without your approval. Once you've approved a galley hardcopy of your book (courtesy of us), we will publish your book to Amazon, through CreateSpace, where it will also be available to Libraries, Academic institutions and online distributors such as Ingram, where book stores can purchase your book. We take on very few books at a time, so rather than being mass produced we work on your book until it's finished, therefore you'll receive your book in less time, while getting more personal attention. This is self-publishing. The difference between selfpublishing and publishing through a Traditional Publisher, is the way your book is marketed, and also the way in which the business is handled. A big publishing company is going to take as many books as it can, and get to them when they can. A major advantage of publishing with us, is that we are streamlined, we don't answer to anyone. We take on just what we can handle and then design the books quickly and efficiently with the utmost quality and precision. Through a Traditional Publisher, you will be offered you a deal, either royalties, a lump sum or both for the publishing

120

of your book. You sign a contract and they make promises as to where your book will be available in actual Brick and Mortar stores for sale as opposed to self-publishing online venues online such as Amazon. When you self-publish through Shoestring Book Publishing, you have the option to completely control your own CreateSpace account. We will teach you how to use CreateSpace for FREE. The only fees you will be subjected to are CreateSpace's royalty fees. (See CreatSpace’s royalty calculator.) Or, if you don't want to be bothered with the technicalities of self-publishing, we will handle your account for you, and distribute your royalties quarterly to you. Your book remains yours when Shoestring Book Publishing professionally designs your book for you, and you do not have to sign any contracts with us. We are NOT a vanity publisher. Vanity publishers charge you thousands of dollars to market your book, and they also make you sign a contract, signing the rights over to your book. They make a back stock of hundreds of books which you pay for. When you self-publish through us, your book is available through print on demand, and you do not pay any cost for stock. You order as many books as you like when you are ready. We advise anyone who is publishing a book to steer away from a vanity publisher. The big indicator that you are about to sign your book over to a vanity publisher is that they will ask YOU for money AND make you sign a contract.

Shoestring Book Publishing

121

With a traditional publisher, They will offer you money upfront and you will negotiate royalties before signing a contract. What you are actually paying for with us, is for us to design and, or, edit your book’s interior, and cover. If you have the skills to use a word processor to design a book, then you can design your own book, and upload it to CreateSpace for Free. There How you decide to publish and market your book is dependent upon your goals. Do you wish to only publish a book so that its contents may be shared with friends and family, or do you desire to market your book so that it may be available to a more wide spread audience such as in small and large Brick and Mortar bookstores? Whatever you decide you'd like to do, in regards to the marketing of your book, if you choose to have Shoestring Book Publishing professionally design your book, we will act as an agent for you and send submissions to appropriate large and small presses. We will charge nothing for this service, until your book is accepted for publication, then we will charge 5% royalties for five years. Please keep in mind that the mainstream publishing process is like the growth of a bamboo. If your goal is to get your book into Brick and Mortar bookstores it is going to take some time. many great authors spent years promoting their works before they were noticed. In order for your book to be accepted by a Traditional Publishing house, you will more than likely need a Book Proposal for your book, depending on the submission

122

guidelines of each publisher. Shoestring Book Publishing offers a service that provides Book Proposals for poetry books and novels. The purpose of an agent is to have someone to submit your book file in the proper format which the publishing press is requesting, which will vary among the different presses. Also a biography with a synopsis containing contact information. Some will request the whole manuscript either digitally or by snail mail, specially formatted. Each publishing press has different guidelines, which need to be followed carefully, otherwise they will most likely discard your submission. It will most likely take 2 to 6 months to get a response from a publishing house in regards to a submission. It is likely you will go receive many rejections before your book is accepted. This process could take years. You could write the book proposal yourself and send submissions to traditional publishing houses all on your own. All an agent does is perform the book submissions steps for you, so that you don't have to go through the grueling process of following the different guidelines of each publisher and receiving many, many rejection letters and emails. Some publishing agents have personal connections with large and small presses, we however do not. We simply have an understanding of the process of book submissions to large and small presses and can be the middle man for you, taking the slack, to spare you the headache of submissions and rejections. Also, once your book is accepted by a large or

small press, we will guide you with the decision making in understanding what you are actually signing in your contract. So, If your goal for publishing your book is to produce a nice professionally designed book, that represents an original work of art, to share with friends and family and you are not looking to have your book in bookstores, self-publishing is all that you really need! The cost is 5.00 per page, for text only (Pictures are extra.) And if you decide to self-publish, and make submissions to traditional publishers as well, we can act as an agent for your book in the meantime. We also help you with many other obstacles in designing your book, like deciding on a book title, which we are experts in, ghost writing your Author's Biography, Preface and/or Introduction and Forward upon request, for FREE! We are available to speak with you 24/7 and will respond to your email inquiries within 24 hours’ time. In addition to uploading a paperback, and an ebook version of your book for FREE with first book published and a hardcover version of your book, through Lulu.com We will send out a FREE galley hardcopy of your book to you, so that you may review your book for any corrections that need to be made, before your book goes live to the public for sale. I can guarantee, you will not find a professional book designing service anywhere else, that offers as much personal attention as we do, at such a low price, without signing any contracts or rights over to your book.

Chapter 27 Understanding the ISBN

Publishing your work has never been easier. In such a market, making sales has never been more difficult. One of the most important factors in making your book available to as many points of sales as possible is owning your own ISBN. Imagine that we have a warehouse of books. You want to know what all the books are in the warehouse so you can choose the ones you want to read. You are provided with a list of ISBN numbers. Now you can look up those numbers and find out what each book is. There are huge databases that are nothing more than book catalogs based upon the principle of attaching each book an ISBN. The publisher will spend a good deal of time filling out all of the information in this database so that the book is well represented. Now any bookseller can find the book by name, author, genre, etc. They even have you upload a copy of the book so they can have their computer scan the digital copy for keywords to use. What this does is make your book available to anyone looking for something similar to your book. Once they find it, then the ISBN tells them who to order it from and the pricing. When one self publishes, typically, the company you publish with, CreateSpace, Lulu, etc. provide you with an ISBN. They do not, however, spend a great deal of time filling out the information on the ISBN. This means that many places looking for your book will not have an easy time finding it. It is our recommendation at Shoestring Book Publishing that it is best to have your own ISBN that you bought and paid for

Shoestring Book Publishing

127

and that you (or your publishing agent) are responsible for filling out properly. Only this assures that you have control over the information and the accessibility to your book. Think about all of the extra hits your book will get just from having a plethora of keywords selected directly from the book's pages. These are the little things that make a huge difference in sales. Do not let a publisher represent this service as some kind of special marketing they do. Any decent publisher worth their salt will properly maintain the information on each ISBN number for every book. You may need one for a paperback, one for a hardcover and even one for an ebook. Having an ISBN for your ebook means that it can be looked up in any library. Why would anyone NOT want that for their book? ISBN numbers are not inexpensive. They can cost up to $50 apiece. I assure you, that is a great amount of marketing you get for such a small investment.

Chapter 28 Shoestring Book Publishing is NOT a Vanity Press!

The base price for a 108 page book through CreateSpace's print on demand FREE Self-Publishing option, is only 2.15! That's less than half Outskirt's Press' 108 page paperback book, which is 4.69 just for one copy! Why pay almost double? Outskirts Press, provides a similar service to Shoestring Book Publishing, but for more than twice as much. Not only for your book design services, but for the cost of your book as well! Why pay more? The cost for a 108 page book, under the Professional Publishing Package, with Shoestring Book Publishing, would be 540.00 less the 10% discount for first time customers, which would be 486.00. The Diamond Publishing Package, with Outskirts Press, is 999.00. That's 513.00 in savings by choosing Shoestring Book Publishing over Outskirts Press and you get so much more with us for so much less! You could spend your time, shopping around to other book designers, that will self-publish your book, send them emails, and they'll call you on the phone and provide you with higher prices than we'll offer. Chances are, they'll have you signing contracts before you even know what your total is! Be wary of vanity publishers, like Tate Publishing, who will email you a very long contract for you to sign, basically signing the rights to your book over, agreeing for you to pay them thousands of dollars to design and self-publish your book, with false promises of aggressive marketing for your book. We are 100% honest with our customers, there are no hidden fees or complicated contracts to sign. Shoestring Book Publishing is NOT a vanity publisher! We are book designers, and editors, who will Self-publish your book for you for free, through Lulu and CreateSpace, and

manage your account, so you don't have to do anything except receive royalty checks! The rights to your book remain entirely yours. With a vanity publisher, you sign over the rights to your book. They are still responsible for paying the author royalties, however, tie the author down to only their publishing company with the particular book contracted. It is best to sign a book contract, with a company that is willing to pay outright a lump sum for your book. Unlike a vanity publisher, which will charge YOU for the design AND the amount of books THEY determine to be printed. With Shoestring Book Publishing, you can have your book designed, edited and self-published, better preparing it for a Large Press that is willing to pay YOU for your book, like HarperCollins Books. If you have your book designed through us, we will act as a literary agent for you upon request, submitting your book to Large Presses like HarperCollins and Penguin Books. It costs nothing for us to act as a literary agent for you, unless your book gets sold. All details can be found in our 'Terms and Conditions' clause. You can trust Shoestring Book Publishing to be the best deal out there in designing one of your beloved heart's treasures, your book! As Self-Published Novelists and Poets ourselves, we understand how much labor goes into writing a book. If you are able to find a book design company that offers a lower price than we do, for what we offer in the Professional Publishing Package, we will match that price! You have our word, that you will receive professional quality book designing at a fraction of the price you will find anywhere else! What are you waiting for? Call us today!

Chapter 29 Testimonies about Shoestring Book Publishing

What customers are saying about Shoestring Book publishing! I have published 3 books through Shoestring Publishing and am very pleased with their work. I know both the team very well, Allan and Alison. They go out of their way to get the work done professionally. Their marketing is also good and the styles and templates they use are good. I recommend you go to them. First it will save you a lot of money and secondly, your publicity will improve greatly as they reach in CreateSpace, Amazon, Lulu and other sites including their own website and marketing wing. You never have to worry about any money because they are honest people, who enjoy doing what they do and work hard for the low cost of publishing your books. In fact they completely revised two of my previous books all over again, spending their time and money to make big improvements. I am now contemplating giving them all my future books! I do have lots of trust in their professional standards. I have recommended over a dozen writers to their Publishing business and I think most are very happy. You won’t regret the services they offer you. Please communicate openly with them so they know what exactly you want. Both Alison and Allan will oblige you immediately. -Marshall E Gass, Author of Whispers in a Thunderstorm, Chiaroscuro, and Tequila & Temptation

This is my third column on Allpoetry, on the advantages of publishing your first poetry book without leaving this site. The name of this publishing company is "Shoestring Book

Publishing," which was founded and still run by two "Terrific " people, of which both are active members on "Allpoetry "..Their names are Ali and Allan. Please take the time to go on Ali's main Allpoetry page. On here, her member name is DeviantPixie. Feel free to go on her page and check out lots of info regarding "Shoestring Book Publishing "..Both her and her partner, Allan, are two of the nicest people you will ever meet. Feel free to message Ali with all your questions. You will absolutely adore her, as I did, from the moment we began chatting, to this very day, over two years later. In the early summer of 2012, I was thoroughly convinced that I wanted badly for 'Shoestring Book Publishing " to publish my first poetry book. My excitement level was off the wall, I assure all of you. While in the process of compiling the poems I desired to include in my book and being totally in my self-glory because of the excitement awarded my by the fun and expertise of both Ali and Allan, my dear wife, Anne was diagnosed with breast cancer. At that point, any interest in publishing a poetry book waned completely as one could imagine. My dear wife went through extremely invasive chemotherapy and finally, by the grace of God, went into full remission a year later. Today she is fully cured and back to the loving and vivacious women I could have lost. It was not until several months later that, by the urging of my son, Michael, coinciding with the once again excellent health of my wife, my interest peaked once again to get my book published by Ali and Allan. They showered both me and my wife with great compassion during our sorrowful crises, as if they were our immediate family. Two more loving souls you will never meet. Never will I forget that; ever! Their commitment to my book as well as yours is and will always

be off the charts. I will never, ever forget that totally awesome magical moment when my book made itself to my mailbox. I ripped the packaging off it like a little boy thinking it may have been his very first tonker toy he had ever had the distinct pleasure of holding in his trembling hands. I was totally awestruck when I first laid my eyes on my very own 138 page labor of love to be forever adored, To see my very own name on the front cover of this dream come true elevated me well beyond cloud nine. I cried like a baby and I am not afraid to admit it. It was as a unique and precious moment in time, one I will NEVER forget, and all thanks to the patience and expertise of these two truly remarkable people. They transferred my dream into a bouquet of reality, vased in their own level of second to none rich creativity and endless hours of fragile caring. I crave so much for all of you to experience that same indescribable moment of self-worth that I did. I know you embellish going ahead with this, but maybe are frightened by the unknown. I implore you, let these two marvelous friends take your hand and walk you through it as if you were their own children. Please believe me, using them, you will experience the exact level of personal reward that I did. I would truly crave to be by your side when you first opened the package and looked in wonderment and deep pride at your very own published book. Shoestring Publishing will match any other book designing company's price if it is lower than theirs for the same services. And get this. They offer an extremely affordable payment plan for as little as fifty dollars down to get started. Think of it. You can't afford not to. This is the best value available for someone like us. These two people are extremely patient, experienced and a distinct pleasure to

work with. Unlike other companies, you can have daily contact with them at your heart's desire. By being able to do so, this gives you a hugh advantage. I have thoroughly checked out various competitors, and having compared them with Shoestring Book Publishing, Ali and Allan come up aces every time. They have a total marketing package second to none. They specialize in designing poetry books, but also have a keen knack for novels. They work endlessly for their customers with undue fanfare to them. Please check out Ali's home page at Allpoetry; DeviantPixie, for her Shoestring information or please feel free to stop by mine and take a look at some more information. Also, please check out my first poetry book, "Love Whisperings," also on my home page .Bless you all and please consider this exceptional opportunity while NEVER needing to navigate away from the Allpoetry site. Feel free also to contact me personally with any of your questions. John A. Faulkner, Author of Love Whisperings

Chapter 30 About the Founders of Shoestring Book Publishing

Allan R. Emery is not only co-owner of Shoestring Book Publishing as well as Chief Executive Editor, but he is also a philosopher, writer, poet, composer, Reike practitioner, Chairman of the International Poetry Fellowship and Shaman wannabe. He is the author of several books and has a CD available for purchase on Amazon.com, with more on the way. Allan is one of those people who truly loves learning and yet no matter what he learns, manages to keep his mind completely open. He is your prototypical selfsufficient Mainer who belongs in the rugged country, far away from the rat race of city life. Allan R. Emery has healed a number of souls, but when I asked him if he would like me to mention how many souls he has healed he simply said he is- ‘a humble satirist and all around irreverent spiritual guy.’ So there ya go, I think that pretty much sums him up.
