KUSTOM At first glance Rick Bray seems to be just another small town boy: baseball cap, tattoos, and a boyish smile. But behind that all-American face lies the mind of a genius. The Lemoore native and his company, RKB Kustom Speed, have quickly risen to the top of the custom motorcycle building world, and have no plans to step down. Rick began his career by building race cars in his garage. In 2004 he began working with motorcycles, and since then people have really began to take notice of his work. Five years ago he began to work with Dave Hill, and RKB Kustom Speed was born. In 2013 Rick won the prestigious

“Artistry in Iron” show in Las Vegas, and since then has received numerous awards and has been featured in several magazines. That award led to RKB being invited to appear on the Discovery Channel’s “#BikerLive” competition in June of 2014. This publicity has helped this small town shop gain nationwide attention. The “Artistry in Iron” show was the beginning of RKB’s mercurial rise in fame. The Las Vegas show pits twenty of the country’s best bike builders against each other in a Master Builder’s Championship. The show is invitation only, so just being invited was a big feather in Rick’s cap. WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM SPORT-TOURING TIRES? AVON STORM 3D X-M TIRES PRICE: $208 FRONT; $275 REAR CONTACT: avonmoto.com If you’re like most, you want everything: maximum traction, superb handling, awesome wet grip, and such good wear that you hardly ever have to replace them. Well, good luck with that. But for some riders, especially those with sport-touring machines who put on serious mileage every year, wear might just be the most important aspect. Those owners will like Avon’s latest sporttouring tire, the Storm 3D X-Ms. According to the company, the 3Ds will provide 15 to 20 percent more mileage than the previous Storm skins. Without an A-to-B comparison, it’s hard for us to validate that figure, but we can say this: The Storms fitted to the Yamaha FJR1300ES we had around here survived 6,710 miles of back roading, touring, and commuting. That’s substantially more life than we coaxed from the Yamaha’s stock tires—like, double. What’s more, the rear Avon still looked virtually new. And when comparing used 7

Long-wearing buns for your sport-touring machine. Watch for wear at the front though. tread depth to new, we think the rear 3D should last 12,000 miles or more. Which is amazing for a tire holding up a heavy, reasonably powerful bike while still offering very good grip. (Unfortunately, California’s drought kept us from testing the Avons’ wet traction.) And the front? Well, at the same mileage, the front was visibly cupped even, as it had plenty of center tread remaining, which is not uncommon with a front-heavy machine. FJRs (and other big sport-tourers) tend to chew up fronts, sometimes faster than they flatten rears, which was the case here. Because of the cupping, the Yamaha’s handling suffered and even had a nasty low-speed bar shake. Up to that point, the FJR handled well— neutral steering, excellent stability—on the Avons, so we can recommend the tires for lighter bikes without hesitation and even for the heftier sleds with the warning to watch inflation pressure and keep an eye on wear patterns. As spring approaches and the weather turns warmer, most of us look forward to getting on the bike and heading for the hills. In the foothills around the Central Valley the hills are green, the flowers are blooming, and the roads are perfect for a day ride. One of the nicest rides I can think of is from the Fresno area to North Fork, then either up the Scenic By-way or across to Bass Lake.

RIDE...
As you head north on Highway 41 toward Yosemite, the road begins to narrow and the traffic begins to thin. You’ll pass the turn-off to Millerton Lake (also a nice ride), head past the 22-Mile House, and eventually find yourself at the junction of the highway and Road 200, also known as the Scenic By-way. Turn to the east here, and as this road dips and turns the valley floor is left behind and oak trees and cattle become more abundant. At this time of year the poppies are in full bloom, as well as lupines and other flowers, which gives you a colorful background as you ride. You’ll eventually find yourself passing the BassFork MiniMart, and from there you can either turn toward Bass Lake or continue on to North Fork. My choice takes me to North Fork, as Road 200 turns into Road 222. Once in this

quaint little ex-logging town, you’ll see the Buckhorn Restaurant and Bar. If it’s still early, the Buckhorn has an excellent selection of breakfast items on their menu; if it’s a little later, you can enjoy almost anything from a taco to a hot dog to an Angus steak sandwich, along with a cold beer or drink, before heading down the road. Come back in the evening and you’ll find the same menu, but the crowd does get a little more lively. Once you’ve filled up at the Buckhorn you can continue through North Fork until you get to the fork by the North Fork Market. From this fork you can either turn north again and head toward Manzanita Lake (the road will also take you past Angel Falls to Bass Lake), or continue on to the east on the Scenic By-way, which will take you past the Redinger Lake overlook, by the Jesse Ross cabin, and past several great campgrounds, Mile-High Lookout, Mammoth Pool, and eventually winds around until you reach Highway 41 again, on the north side of Oakhurst. The road I’m most familiar with is the one that leads to Manzainita Lake. Manzanita Lake is a small lake maintained by PG&E. There are several picnic sites here, the ducks and geese will keep you entertained, and the fishing is usually great. If you don’t stop at the Buckhorn this is the ideal place to break for a picnic and a cold one before going on your way. Leaving Manzanita and turning east you’ll travel a narrow road that will take you along a peaceful road to the shores of Bass Lake. From there you can either go around the lake or head back to Highway 41 toward home or Yosemite. The other road is the Scenic By-way, which is an amazing ride full of different scenery and swithchbacks. (Just a quick side note - there is only one gas station/ store along this route, and I can’t guarantee when and if it will be open, so make sure the tank is full and you have snacks and drinks before you head up.)This road is not maintained in the winter, so if you go up in the early spring it may still be closed due to snow. If not, it’s worth the trip! The Reddinger Lake overlook is one of the first views you’ll appreciate after leaving North Fork, as the oak-covered hills slope down to the lake. Continue on and you’ll come to a small sign pointing to the Jesse Ross Cabin, the homeplace of one of Madera

County’s first settlers. There are original newspapers from the early 1900’s lining the walls, and the cabin has been restored to the exact specifications as when old Mr. Ross was living there. Along the By-way there are several excellent campgrounds and fishing streams, and plenty of side roads that are maintained enough for a slow ride. The Mile High Overlook gives you an excellent view of Mammoth Pool and the surrounding areas. At Mammoth Pool you’ll find Wagner’s Resort, the gas station/store that might or might not be open, and a few primitive campgrounds. Continue on past Mammoth and you’ll pass Jackass Meadows, then turn back down the hill until you come back to the highway. It’s a long loop, but it can be done in one day, and the scenery is worth it. Once back on Highway 41 you can either head up to Yosemite or back down to the valley. There are several restaurants and bars in the Oakhurst/Coarsegold area, many which are listed in our Central California Biker, to stop at and finish off a wonderful day. So, if you’re looking for a great place to ride to on a warm spring day, head up north on Highway 41 and see what’s waiting for you!

won the Master Builders Championship in 2013, and repeating in 2014, they cemented their legacy as one of the best bike builders in the country. Since then Rick’s bikes have appeared all over the country and have gathered awards where ever they went. Perhaps the most famous of his bikes is the “Solomon Special”, the winner of the Artistry in Iron show. This beautiful bike is not only a show bike, but is street legal and has actually been ridden. This beautiful bike, which was featured in Barnett’s Magazine, is a Shovelhead that has been totally customized, from the gas cap to the taillight. The bike was named to honor Rick’s friend Colby Solomon, whose passing inspired Rick to build a memorial to him that the entire country could see. Another of Rick’s creations that has gathered attention is “Palo Duro”, a Harley Davidson 80 inch hardtail Shovelhead. Rick did all of the metal fabrication on this beautiful bike and and customized everything from the gas cap to the brass fittings. Being invited to appear on “#BikerLive” has exposed Rick’s work to people all over the country who otherwise would not have heard of this small-town sensation. He and his crew, Dave Hill, Randall Bray and Rob Soloman, competed against two other builders in
a five week competition to see who can build the best bike. Viewers vote via Twitter to see who wins the big prize. Rick’s work isn’t just confined to motorcycles, either. He continues to build race cars, fabricating the chassis and other components for everything from quarter-midgets to sprints. He also makes custom knives, and has recently started making some very nice custom jewelry. Whatever Rick does, he puts his own touch on it and it’s guaranteed to be one-of-a -kind. The one thing Rick takes the most pride in is the fact that his crew makes everything themselves. From the frame to the forks to the handlebars everything is fabricated in his small Lemoore shop. All of the work is done by hand, and there are no computer generated parts. His shop is truly one of the only shops that still do everything by hand, despite the time it takes. If a customer orders a part, it will not come from a large factory somewhere - it will be hand built from start to finish in the small shop Rick has been working in for years. Rick Bray is sure to be a force in the custom motorcycle building world for years to come.
