The professional work documents my work in Fieldoffice Architect, Lu Chia-lung Architect and personal studio work, including a landscape renovation project and several residential projects. In Fieldoffice, as my first landscape project, I tried several material experiment on site. Further in real estate design, I developed more detail and texture experiment by modeling and simulations.

POSITION:

This project is a transformation project, which from an old factory to be a local park and art center for the city area. My duty in this project started from schematic design, detail design to the construction and supervision. Master Planning The master-plan of this project is trying not only revive a half abandon wine factory but also provide a chance to create a green shadow, continuing the green avenue from the local train station to the river. [1.1 green shadow path in Yilan city] Schematic plan Our goal was to convince the TTL company that rather than being an isolated and close factory, open space can bring more benefits for wine factory whether at social, educational or commercial. And to open a gate on the old factory wall also established a milestone for the factory. Design Strategy The shade system adopts the burning sun and heavy rain environment, providing a shadow area and forming as a guideline for tourism.[1.2 tube guideline and shade system] We also proposed an alternative use of the old manufactured house, to be the stand food market and exhibition room. On the other hand, the eccentric space of the old house which stands for local industrialization after WWII survives from demolishing.

Material Study The design work process operated by the physical modeling mainly rather than only on drawing. From 1/500 model of planning to 1/100 model of factory plan [1.3 schematic model 1/100]and to the 1/50 model of detail study, the material designed directly on the model to test the harmony and the joint part. The truss frame is complex work process. The tubes connect one column to the others in different position. Between 2011-2013, Ting Fu served in the Architect firm where we focus on real estate/ residential building tower mainly. The process is from the land evaluation, floor area calculation, to the schematic design, detail design, facade rendering,and to the issued of permit and supervision. Schematic development The sketch process makes sure the logic and basic proposal. Furthermore, 3D modeling help to evaluate the possible scenario and to analyze the advantages and disadvantages. Modeling is to express the relationship between elements. The model is not necessary too real but to form a target we can pursue and be persuasive to the clients. The skill of modeling advanced in AA study. Grasshopper made the logic thinking process smoothly and more sophisticated for applications. Apartment block in Neihu district[2.1] This project was a small trapezoid space with four small flat units on each floor. The shade system not only covers the private space but also covers the sundry clothing when people live in. However, there is no intention to make any pattern, however, the pattern of shade system is customized,marking the living track and varying the pattern of usage.

After designed several planning projects, I began to Facade Design mainly as well as to be a facade designer with other project designers. In the gap year before AA, I ran my studio as a freelancer and a consultant to help other architect firms and real estate builder for the facade design and rendering. Apartment in Neihu district is my first built residential building, with six stores flats, parking space on the ground level and sky garden on the top. The facade design shows the rhythm of stone and shadow of steel. The detail expression on stone cutting varies with the polishing face and flamed face.

The expression of glass, metal and stone[3.4,3.5,3.6] These three projects show the different facade design work while adjusting the portion of building mass, figuring the edge

of the balcony and providing shade for private. Repetition of patterns is essential of facade design. The pattern creates rhythm, suggesting the logic behind of facade and expression of the building.

ACADEMIC WORK

The academic work documents my MA project in AA Landscape Urbanism and undergraduate work in National Cheng Kung University, including a land reclamation project " Littoral Negotiation" and other urban praxis such as park design and recycling infrastructure. In these practices, I concern material flow as an engine to drive a social movement. While in Littoral Negotiation, sandy islands manufacture massive fish farm,

supporting the rising population in Egypt. In Homeless and Reverse, the recycling movement changes the social behavior and clean the city. The Hide and Seek city park considered people themselves as the movement to establish the relationship to the environment. The conflict is ever ywhere in the world, however, architect can play the role as an agency to drive the society forward.

This project explores the blurred interface between the land and the sea known as the littoral zone. The very matter from which this condition is constructed is wet sand or sediment. This is the material from which we begin to envision alternative design scenarios for the littoral zone of the Mediterranean Sea. It is often claimed we live in a new geological era known as the ‘Anthropocene’, in which human influences characterize a distinct layer of the geologic record. In this new era, humans have the capacity to hack the environmental processes which govern the form of the earth’s surface. In our case, the processes of interest are those which mould the planets shifting, sedimentary coastal zones. This Atlas[4.1] documents the sediment movement in both artificial way and nature movement.In the Mediterranean Sea, sediment is in short supply, largely due to the damming of its many rivers.The sediment that does make it the ocean flows via littoral cells along the coast, crossing the borders of 25 different nations and affecting almost half a billion people that live along the Mediterranean Coast[4.2]. This cross-political situation has forced numerous conflicts and cooperation’s, in which any sand extraction or intervention within the coast will invariably have some impact on the downstream region. Despite this, there exists no Mediterranean Scale action plan, framework, or precedents in how to manage sediment, as exists with other important resources and issues such as the management of fisheries, or the management of pollution on a Mediterranean Scale, as dictated by multinational agreements such as the Barcelona Convention. Focusing on the erosive littoral zone of Lake Manzala, situated between the mouths of the Nile and the Suez Canal, we have begun to envision scenarios of sediment negotiation and redistribution, combining the economic model and strategy, in which land expansion begins to reconfigure new territory.

The online map is the platform to collect and document sediment data around the Mediterranean sea, which established ArcGIS based system and Mapbox online tool.It can be updated any sand extraction or source. This could be an interesting way of collecting data of the more illegal and unregulated ways in which sand is being relocated.

We envisioned a process in which a user could input a point, from which a sediment fan would emerge, providing a visual representation of the political ramifications of that sediment moving across national boundaries. This becomes a tool from which to negotiate how sediment is redistributed according to need.

This may be useful as for people to build an awareness of these activities which seem to largely travel under the radar of typical observation. While some websites report coastal issues and dredging activities daily (Coastal Care or Dredging Today), these websites do not provide a visual, or geographical representation of this.

On the online map website, any user can easily create a point within a user-friendly interface to represent sediment extraction place, sediment resource, and sand mining activities with information such as date, location, quantity. By locating the sand movement and visualizing on map, the impact of dredging, sand mining become an understandable activity to people from various backgrounds.

Land-script shows how does Costal evolution model work to simulation the long-shore drift effect. Transboundary sediment movement documents the sediment data and littoral cell in the Mediterranean Sea. Territorial formation documents the food production system and urbanisation related to shipping and network in Nile delta region. Fishery production system documents the fishery industry development in lake Manzala water area, whereas at the north it’s more intensive and on the southern part, it’s more extensive and illegal operation. Negotiated territory suggests the a sediment bargain system while inland people dredge unnecessary sediment to the coast. This sand supplier as stockholders to share the interest of sediment benefit rather than sell the sand in money. Shifting plan in further suggests the negotiation in a profitable way. The scheme is concluded the whole lake Manzala area, proposing fishery industry should shift from land side to the seaside, from Nile riverside to the East side to revive fishery industry and decrease burden of environmental impact. Techtonic intersection explains the scheme in spit group scale. Those spits grow through time, engaging with the fishery village development and intensified by fishery operation. Weaving and threading physical structure tests the idea of fishery village in single spit scale, whereas suggesting the process of sedimentation and the formation of infrastructure. Social formation[4.7] The social formations within Lake Manzala show the fishery production system and land management. The conflicts between different groups of people: First, the government tries to repel some illegal fish farmer to occupy public water area.Second, fish farmers compete with water resource due to the strict policy of fresh water usage. These relationships largely affects the production network whereas the drawing indicates the networks which support the various fisheries types, marking the inputs (blue) which fuel them and the outputs (red), being their food production.

Nile river mouth spit[4.6] The geomorphology drawing shows the spit formation of Nile river mouth forming the Damietta Spit. Beginning in 1700, the spit grew toward the sea and gradually formed the general figure of today’s coastline. After 1960’s, Aswan dam blocked the sediment supply which cause the land at the mouth of the river has actually eroded away forming the 10km long spit.

Fishery strategy of lake manzala The following diagrams show how these different aquaculture strategies could be applied within a spit-lagoon formation in our project. On water quality and species redistribution of lake Manzala [4.8], it represents the strategy of shifting fishery production system toward the sea. And the shifting plan of fish farming [4.9], it suggests the combination of species could be functional not only to manure other species but also reduce the problem caused by intensive fish farming. For example, in the lake, herbivorous fish can control the source of eutrophication such as algae and aquatic plants. On the coastal interface, the polyculture and ecosystem approach method could be used taking advantage of the clean sea water. Another strategy could be to introduce semi-intensive, polyculture breeding and ecosystem approach of aquaculture breeding within the smaller lagoon areas created by the spit

Negotiated territory [4.10] describes a strategy for how sediment might be negotiated within lake Manzala region. As part of the countries need for more land in order to feed itself, the geomorphological ability of the spit to transport sediment could be tied with the fish farming industry as a mechanism to both control and provoke its growth. This new landscape formation could be encouraged by the government as a valuable resource for coastal defense while simultaneously improving the local economy.

The Cartogenesis panel[4.11] represents one possible scenario of deployment for multiple spit generations in time according to the conditions found within the Lake Manzala site. Having developed a thorough understanding of coastal spit morphology using CEM, we created a logic around how the spit could be deployed, using an L-system as a generative tool.

Cartogenesis shows spit shifts in time as a part of shifting plan, both in terms of sediment, but also the human populations may migrate along with it, moving to areas with greater productivity. The drawing documents the spit growth, with each colour representing 10-year intervals. This frame becomes a skeleton from which the spit may fatten up with sediment, or if supplies begin to deplete, it may shrink away.

Spit formation The Spit Sedimentation model [4.12] explores the larger scale of spit system. The modelled allowed us to consider how the sediment might form over time, consolidating in certain areas adjacent to fish pen walls, forming a terrain suitable for certain industries such as fish farming. potentially, the logic could be scripted into the computer and reapplied testing different scenarios on the larger scale. Spit bathymetry[4.13] shows the result of sedimentation and reconfigure the new territory of spit. The deep blue line as a division affects the population to settle down and redistribute fish farm.

cooperative formation Fishery village [4.15] shows the scenarios where the system has evolved into a village. This example is one formed of cooperation and collaboration, in which a series of clusters of buildings have developed over time. Having begun with a collection of sticks and nets accumulating sediment over time, a shared platform, or podium can be formed between several structures. These in turn form the infrastructure for a communal building or house to emerge. If the density is great enough, a second level could be added, which in turn gives the group the opportunity to remove the lower story and open it up as a shared communal space. These ideas have been developed in part from some of the communities studied in Indonesia, such as Bajau sea villages built on stilts. Fish farm section[4.16] describes the fishery village formation process, which is from sedimentation, profit ownership, bio-farming cooperation and the activities.

profit sharing The spit is composed of several different sources of sediment, giving rise to the potential for co-ownerships of the resulting fish ponds. Given some supplies of sediment come from the government and others coming from the fish farmers, this might give rise to the potential for shared profit EXTENSIVE ALGAE FARM and shared POND: production.

We utilize the fish pen to accumulate sediment. The fabric material between stick can slow down the wave's speed and build a shadow area, similar to the effects used of a “turbidity curtain” used in conventional land reclamation. As each layer accumulates in time, the shadow area is increased. A series of sticks and fabric systems gradually gather sand forming an island.

The evolution of fish pond transitions from more extensive fish production to more intensive fish production. Each production system can assist each other. Although the extensive system produces less fish, it serves more of an ecological function, filtering water and decreasing eutrophication similar to the Veta La Palma example we studied earlier. About the title[5.2] This project is by recycling to rebuild a relationship between the citizen and the homeless people. The concept of recycling is “ The shorter path for recycling, the more efficiency they get”. In this exchanging system, these drifters are delivery, collecting recycling material to exchange living resource[5.1] as food, clothing and hot bath. Through this process, homeless people not also are being the agent but also surviving in the system.This project also aims to decrease the discriminations among different groups of people.By second hand exchanging and providing basic facilities for homeless. By this, they can get rid of the notorious name, however, they create some benefit for this society. History of drifters and vendors[5.3] shows the flourishing time of Wan Hua after 1950. It provided major commercial harbor and modernize Taipei city. Drifters gathered here for jobs as shipping porter The Long-Shan Temple, was popular visiting place and attracted vendors to settle down.Retrospectively, drifters and stand vendors grew with Wan Hua’s economy. The recycling system[5.4] drive from three groups of people.Red stands for general consumption, from citizen and exhausting producers.Blue means delivery, collecting and carrying recycling into the system.Green people are the consumers, which means to buy or reuse green resources. Hence, the groups of people compose the recycling system for this local recycling circulation.

The bath[5.5] follows the recycling path and forms a bath-island independent to space of the sunken plaza. The recycle path, flea market, and pathway tangle around sunken. The corridor provides the temporar y shelter from burning sun or chilly wind. Recycling path[5.7] The map shows the context in Wan Hua area, which potentially forms several recycling paths.Food recycling collects leftovers from offerings, vendors, and traditional markets. In this system, waste food can largely reduce and become energy for needy. The heat from parking and underground can be transfer into bath water. Vintage and clothing commonly abounded in the surroudning area.Hence, this system converts the useless resource becoming useful. This project is a transformation of hill park into a visualizing sunken plaza where reorganizing a public space to different groups of people, based on their characteristic and custom. Territory in terrains A bowl-shape plaza[6.2,6.3,6.4], organized by several small sunken space around the basin space. Earth replaces with the empty parking bays in the first underground floor, planting trees and forming terrains with remnant structure. Hence, people are easy to establish their territory by inside, half inside and outside of the frame When people sit in small sunken[6.5,6.6], they only see trees and sky around them. Children can have a secret place to play, and gamblers can ignore others and enjoy their game. It seems like the terrain separate people, on the other hand, people on the bridge watch all corners clearly. Therefore, it forms a relationship between supervisors and people beneath them, keeping safe with a transparent view.

In musician house, the building material and space tangle as the singing group in the choir. One material will outstand somewhere when it comes to solo, and merges with other parts whereas the harmony. Based on the logic of choir singing group, different material which standard for the unique characteristic as the soprano, alto, tenor, bass in a movement as we organize these materials in space.Every space has unique property, such as open to outdoor or indoor, soft or hard sense of texture. This project is more like to compose notes in space  to form daily life belongs to a musician. The unfolding plan[7.2] expresses the idea of the singing group in detail. Indoor pathway, timber path forms a semi-outdoor space between interior and exterior. On the south face, the corridor is broadened with the vision of waterscape. On the other hand, it is narrow with space and garden area. Private space includes a master room, a parents' room and a studio in the ground floor, and children's room in the first floor. Concrete forms as a linear space climbing on and tangling with the open space. The material in section[7.1] shows the combination of material in further, shade material blur the exterior to be semi-indoor and stone-made corridor ends with grass field. Plant shadows grow on the bamboo structure, forming a double skin for residential space, which is essential for housing in the south Taiwan. Especially, in brick and stone structure, heat releases for hours after sunset. The whole project organized the circulation as a composition.At each turn, the rhyme changes its characteristic like a change from a movement to another. It presents not merely harmoniously, but also rhythmically with the residential environment.
