Graphics evolution Before, in 1942, video games used to be in 2D and pixelated (left image), created using a cathode ray tube.

Now they are in 3D with a more realistic image (right image): 3D is created using LISP machines, Paintbox computers and work stations like Silicon Graphics.

Music evolution

Before, the music in video games used to be monophonic, looped and completely digitalized (using a specific microprocessor to create sound waves and sound effects) due to how expensive were cassettes and gramophone records at that time.

Now it has a good quality, using orchestras (a good example is Mario Galaxy or The Legend of Zelda – Twilight Princess) and, often, famous music bands. In the 21th century, it's considered a music genre.

Video game control Before, the video game control used to be with a simple controller with some buttons.

Now there are controllers with movement sensors or optical sensors.

Online Gaming

Before, games didn't use to have online functions. Dungeons & Dragons is the first game with online functions. MAG (PS3)

Now, almost every game has online functions: you can race, kill zombies and many other things with people from all over the world. Examples: MAG (PS3), Team Fortress (PC), Mario Kart (Wii)... Team Fortress 2 (PC)

Into the future

One thing is sure: video games will keep evolving and bringing new gaming experiences. Right now, 3D video games are being developed and some of them are available for buying in shops. An example is Batman: Arkham Asylum. Also, next year, the Nintendo 3DS will be released, it's games will be in 3D, with no need of special glasses. What will happen next? Who knows...
