ZR Lady 27,5‘ The new ZR Team frame is the basis for ZR Lady 2015. The geometry has been modified to the demands of women cyclists. Firstly the shorter top tube offers a comfort plus in the seating position, which turns out to be quite upright in this ZR series. The bend in the top tube implements a lower stand-over height; the more legroom avoids ungentle contact by planned or unplanned dismounting. We have placed specially fitted saddles in the Lady models to fit women’s anatomical requirements, and compared to the smaller men’s models, offer a more relaxed seating. The contact points on the handlebar have been chosen with much consideration: Ergon GPI S grips offer a larger surface for handballs and also provide a better circulation and comfort on longer trips. The ZR Lady bike series differentiate in their ergonomic basic data to that of the ZR Team series – more comfort, and, fitted for women’s anatomy… a excellent alternative for female bikers.

BLACK SIN LADY 26 Women are, on average, a little smaller than men: 29” bikes are by small frames over proportionally large – for many, this ratio from bike to frame doesn’t feel right. Because of this we have decided to offer our carbon race hard tail additionally in a 26” lady’s model – Black Sin Lady 26! This bike is equipped with a mix of Shimano SLX and Shimano XT- shift components - renowned for its excellent shifting performance! The suspension fork is the tried Rock Shox Reba RL with tapered shaft. The wheels - Mavic Crossride - are high quality, efficient and reliable - exactly that what women in stint need. By the way, it’s not bad for men, either!

R1 The R1 series impressively proves that high-quality racing bikes don’t have to be expensive. The aluminium frame of the R1is equipped with Radon Conehead, that allows tapered fork usage and increases frame stiffness. Instead of the former tapering of 11/8” to 1,5” to gain more comfort, we will be using 11/8” to 11/4” double chamber full carbon forks in 2015. A super light tube set made of triple fold butted 7005 aluminium lowers the weight and translates the acceleration-power efficiently in propulsion. R1 has Pressfit bottom bracket and at the rear dampen Flex-Stray stays vertical impacts and ensure comfort. The sporty geometry and the direct steering manoeuvrability make this entry-level model to a pure-breed racer that is just as good for daily evening training as well as extensive tours. This bike is being offered in two different types: the entry-level model starting at €999 and for a mere €200 more you can buy the R1 frameset equipped with complete Shimano Ultegra system. We’re are staying true to ourselves – even in 2015… more bike for less money!

IGNITE This Radon Ignite is a completely new development for 2015. We are introducing a super lightweight high-end aluminium frame: at a frame height of 56cm weighing a mere 1,170g. The classic frame of Ignite is equipped with tapered Conehead headtube. The Shimano press fit inner bearings provide high rigidity in the bottom bracket area. The seatpost has a diameter of 27.2 mm – offering much more comfort. The complete Shimano Ultegra group and the ultra lightweight Mavic Ksyrium Elite S wheels are standard on this bike. This bike rounds up our programme of aluminium racers. € 1,799. –

SPIRE After 4 years of running time, our carbon classic bike has been completely newly developed - bringing a totally new racing bike into our programme in 2015. It was important for us, in the development programme, to improve the individual rigidity as well as the enhancement of comfort. The new frame weighs only 950g bringing 5% less on the scales than its predecessor. An innovation is the size of the seat post, 27,0 mm. Comfort plus due to the combination with flexing seat stays, an optimised layup and modified tubeshape. We were able to improve the rigidity of the steering head by 30%, which means an increase of 25% of ‘rigidity-to-weight ratio’! Beyond that, the new Spire group is set up for Shimano’s Di2 gear system and will be offered in two different models starting at € 1,999.–

VAILLANT Again, in 2015, Vaillant is our top of the range model and we expect excellent results in the fight for podium ranking. Our ‘stealth bomber’ named by specialist publications for its striking optic- is getting a dazzling finish, making this bike to an even more of an eye-catcher than before. The aerodynamic optimised frame offers very little resistance to the wind than conventional frame forms – a strong advantage when fighting against the clock. The sporty racing geometry, combined with its lightweight and an exceptionally high rigidity provide distinct power transformation; every push of the pedal leads to consistent propulsion. Steering commands are precise and directly carried out. Vaillant gives a high level performance that, in the end, decides between victory and defeat. Vaillant comes in two models starting at € 1,999.–

SKEEN 29 The waiting time is now over; it’s finally here! Presented, firstly, as a prototype at the BIKE-Festival in Riva, we are now extremely proud to present the Skeen 29 series. Our legendary Skeen 26 has finally been replaced. The new Skeen, as all current marathon bikes, stands on big wheels. We have given it a tight 100mm spring deflection at the front and rear. The modernly elegant, near to filigree, frame is made of 7005 aluminium and equipped with Radon Cone Head and tapered steer tube. The features of the Skeen 29 have been laid in the frame. Additionally, PressFit inner bearings have been installed. The wheels at the front are fitted with QR15 quick release axles and at the rear with X12 axles; material for the rocker is carbon. The weight of the frame is 2450 g plus dampers. With Skeen 29 you are equipped for long, hard tours as well as vast marathons. Skeen 29 is available in 3 models.

SLIDE 29 This bike was designed as a classic All mountain with a wide range of application. The large wheels ensure much traction uphill, a plus on ground contact in curves as well as braking and rolling over larger roots and stones. Those looking for a state-of-the-art bike have found it with Slide 29 – as we’ve totally devised the frame. The tubeshape is new and seems considerably more elegant. The top tube conveys dynamic. The weight has been reduced due to the innovative frame. The chainstays shortened making the bike more agile and nippier in bends. The chassis is equipped with 130mm spring deflection, which, thanks to the 29 wheels, seems much more. The frame has been equipped with Radon Conehead, the fork with a tapered head tube. Other technical features are the Shimano PressFit inner bearings. A prearrangement for Reverb stealth and quick release axles on the fork as well as at the rear. Extensive tours in uplands, alp tours with wild descents and the after-work round – Slide 29 is for many the perfect choice. We offer Slide in 3 models and different colours starting at €1599.

SLIDE 27,5 Better is the enemy of good! That’s what our developers thought as they gave the Radon classic a new wheel size. But not only are the wheels new; the frame has been turned upside down. The flatter steering angle enables Slide 27,5 to dance on small trails. Even the frame seems to project this lightness. New tube shapes give its appearance an extra portion of dynamic. The frame, with its 150mm spring deflection has all reserves that a modern all mountain/trail bike needs to bring the pilot over rough trails. But not only downhill - Slide shows what’s in it uphill. Ascents are no problem with this bike. The front wheel sticks to the ground while the drive-neutral chainstays look after full propulsion. Norm nowadays; the Radon Conehead (more rigidity), tapered forks, quick-release axles at the front and rear, inner passed cables and a Reverb conduit. Slide 27,5 is available in 4 models starting at €1999.

It yearns for speed, loves playful, frisky passages and is versatile in change of direction but still offers enough reserves when in the passages of stony ground. Its features make it a perfect bike for all those who love it hard – those who want to reach the summit by their own power-because, as we all know; the best summits aren’t reachable by lift or shuttle! Swoop 175 25 runs on 26” wheels, as swoop 175 Expert on 27.5”. In total, 6 different configurations starting at an amazingly low price of €1,999.

We are greeted with the following words on a Columbian Bike shop on our way to ’Las Alegrias’ (the friends) where a heavenly trail in the valley of Cocora is waiting for us. But before, we have to master 900 metres of altitude on the secluded connecting road from Salento to the spas of Toche in the national park ‘Los Nevados’ - accompanied only from hummingbirds, parrots and a dozen other different birds - and all this at a mild temperature, even in 3000m altitude. This is optimal stamina and race training for fitness orientated bikers – up to 4000 metres. For everyone else there is wide net of trails for every kind of demand in Salento. The trails here in Columbia are being prepared for the finest downhill biking. Luckily, bureaucrats are few and far between – what you find here are bushwhackers and sweat! Due to the distinct improvement in the security situation, this country is able to unfurl its beauty and potential of the country to tourist and outdoor sportsmen of all kinds. As well as the Cordilleras, the Caribbean and Pacific beaches are attracting many visitors with few exceptions, not comparable to the mass tourism on European beaches. Here you can wonderfully combine bike and beach holiday.
The culinary wishes don’t miss out, for example traditional trout with fried plantains. You must try the different fruit juice drinks - freshly pressed, heavenly! Not to forget the Columbian coffee plantations that show the processing as well as the cultivation. Wild growing orchids; the endemic royal palm, growing up to a height of 50m and many other colourful plants offer a spectacular setting. In heights from 4000 metres, you can observe a panorama, a landscape with unusual cactus-types frallejones, now and again a condor that diligently follows the courageous biker into the 2500 metre deeper valley . Mucho trabajo; work for which you love doing overtime.
Made possible due to a reasonable daily connection (starting at €600) and a pleasant climate, the Columbian Andes offer a unique bike adventure to flee winter. Especially the rich cultural and friendliness of the people as well as the breathless scenery make this journey to an unforgettable experience. The slogan from the Columbian tourist board is’ The only danger here, is that you won’t want to go home’. We can definitely verify this.

Summer
FROM COLOGNE TO SPILT IN THREE WEEKS By Michael Ficon After many tours across the Alps with an MTB, this year’s choice for a 3-week-tour was the RADON TLS 9.0 trekking bike. It all started on a Saturday morning in Cologne, after a night that was longer than expected and more beers drunk than planned. A great start! The weight of my luggage; a much too heavy 20 kg, and believe me, I did try to keep my luggage low, as I wanted to go far and fast! I left 2 further bags at home, as well as some provisions, crockery etc. … On the first day I wanted to travel to Koblenz and 170 km were standing in front of me. In fact, I wanted to break the 200 km mark and in approximately 3 days to be at Lake Constance, but this didn’t happen. Retrospectively, this was more a wish than a realistic target.
The journey along the Rhine was mostly flat, but my bike often drove me to despair. For example, near to Biblis I had to cycle around many diversions as the bike track ended in a construction site and nobody had thought about putting up a sign to say ‘cul-desac’. The TLS had to cycle over rough field tracks and I was frightened that my tyres would be destroyed. This worry wasn’t necessary - I didn’t have to tighten my spokes nor did I have to true up the wheels. The bike just carried on….
Besides that, cycle tracks are, naturally enough, laid so that cyclists don’t have to cycle through urban areas, but across fabulous landscapes. This is for most people perfect – as they want to enjoy the tour and look at the landscape in peace and quiet. But, unfortunately for me, this wasn’t efficient; my time was limited and although not well planned enough I did have ambitious targets. After I arrived on the 6th day in Constance, I seriously had to contemplate how I was going to carry on. But before that I was quite surprised as I cycled through Basel to see how many people go swimming in the Rhine! I decided to go east, so I followed the banks of Lake Constance. This way lead me in the next 3,5 days from Bregenz through the Montafon across the Silvretta High Alpine Road and then to Lake Garda. The ascent over the Silvretta High Alpine Road up to Bielerhöhe (2032m) was consumptive. The same day I travelled to Nauders on the Reschen Pass. For this lap I calculated 2000m altitude difference and 130 km – then, off to Merano.
58 | radon-bikes.com
The first objective was to eliminate metres in altitude. Nauders lies at approximately 1600 metres, Merano at 300 metres. In Merano there is a beer garden, Forst, where I always drink a beer and eat a snack. This year it didn’t stay by the one beer; it was so tasty that in the end I didn’t walk to my youth hostel, I staggered! The next day it didn’t rain, it poured – and thunder and lightning accompanied me from the Adige all the way to Lake Garda. Without a break, I arrived a few hours later in Nago and for the first time on this day could enjoy a glimpse of Lake Garda, without rain. I just love this view. The day after, after 1400km and 5000 metres of altitude difference, I had a rest. Lucily enough, it didn’t rain so on the eleventh day I could enjoy a day of sun and reading on the beach. The next two days I left 450 km behind me. Unfortunately I was suffering from knee pains since the 4th day.
radon-bikes.com | 59
The pain just wouldn’t stop and made itself noticed increasingly. The pain was fought against with a morning dose of Ibuprofen; after one, or sometimes after two tablets, I got on my bike and carried on. My knee was mostly very swollen in the evening and during the day journey I noticed that I could hardly put any pressure to my knee. Especially pleasant were the 33 midge bites that I received at a camping site near Venice. I had hardly arrived and they were attacking me. In the end it was 36 bites against 7 dead midges! This time I really lost! After the tour along the Rhine, across the Alps, on the flat area of Lake Garda and over Venice to Trieste – the last part of my journey began – the Croatian Coast. The next destination was Dubrovnik, and I had the possibility to cycle along the beaches of Istria, to visit the city of Pula. For this, I would have to bring forward my visit to Split, which caused no problem. After all, I had booked neither hotels nor camping sites - nor flights! The first night at the Adriatic Coast, I stayed in Koper, a pretty town in Slovenia. The town was crowded with visitors who were visiting the music festival where lots of artists were performing different types of music on 8 stages. A feast for my eyes were the beautiful women there. Wherever I looked, I had a smile on my face… The next evening, I reached Pula. Again, it rained so hard that many streams had flowed over their banks that my bike was extremely dirty. Luckily enough, it rained so hard that when on the roads again, my bike was clean again.
60 | radon-bikes.com
The most beautiful part of the journey was reached here, where I cycled around a Laguna and then along the coast. I found a restaurant with patio at a height of 200m where I could see Rijeka. There was also a fabulous view of an island just off the coast and the Adriatic Sea. I stayed there for over 2 hours, talked to friends over Facebook and simply enjoyed the view. After that, 50km downhill, direction Rijeka - always along the coast - a dream! Every journey finishes sometime – my journey was in total 16 riding days and nearly 2500km. On the last day I broke the 200 km limit and then had a day off in Split; a beautiful city with a fabulous and popular historic city with small alleys, great squares, many restaurants and cafés; a fabulous finish for my 3-week holiday.
My bike had coped exceedingly well and I was happy that I had taken a size larger than normal. I had smooth running and a sporty seating position. I took a shuttle service to the airport, my bike in my bag. I wrote the last report on the plane for friends, who had been following my adventure light tour via Facebook. I arrived in Cologne-Bonn Airport and my holiday was over. Welcome back to Germany. Looking forward to seeing you soon, world. Next tour: Kaval – Teheran… I will be reporting

SHORTtrips ShortART AND CULTURE IN FLORENCE Florence is the capital of the Tuscany and the Italian Renaissance-art. For art enthusiasts Florence is worth visiting.
Von Hütte zu Hütte dem Alltag entfliehen.
HIKING – FROM ONE ALPINE HUT TO THE NEXT Forget your daily routine for a couple of days in untouched nature. Enjoy a hut tour in Carinthia. Arrive and off you go - on a hut tour you can enjoy the landscape and let the day die down in a rustic Alp hut. This marvellous area for walks stretches between 1.050 and 2500 metres of difference in altitude. This area in Austria promises an exhilarating hiking holiday. The stretch of way has different severities, so that there are tours even for the ‘not skilled’ hiker. Information about hut tours is available on the Internet site of the German Alp Club, www.alpinverein.at
Florence is a city that enthrals visitors with its architecture, paintings and beauty. It is an encounter of different eras, not only to be admired in the Uffizien Gallery but over the whole city. Florence itself is a piece of art. Architectural masterpieces such as the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral (built by the Renaissance architect and sculptor, Filippo Brunelleschi), with its massive dome that juts over the roofs of the city, characterises this city. So that the cultural overabundance doesn’t hit you, we recommend that you book one of the quiet villas in the suburbs of the city, in the beautiful landscape of Tuscany.
As well as addresses and how the huts are equipped, you can also find information about how the huts are managed or how to reserve beds, and what kinds of beds can be booked. There is also important information about equipment and tips for safety rules on a hiking tour.

You know the feeling, the whole spring you have been working on your sporting foundation, in summer you have had a couple of races, in the golden autumn a few tours from your ‘do before you die’ list – it feels good; you are at your best and the wheels could keep on turning; could, if only tonight 60 cm. of powder snow hadn’t fallen.
66 | radon-bikes.com
When you look at this hiccup you feel even more buried from every single snowflake. What can you do in this chilly and damp season? Especially when bikers
don’t have the heart to chase their sweetums around the street in this kind of weather?
My recommendation: make a virtue of necessity and start training in the forest. Then, in Germany we are lucky to have beautiful, looked after and marked
cross-country slopes! Yes, you heard right- we are going cross-country skiing! Gliding on skis is a challenge for the whole body: arms, legs back, stomach
and you’ll also notice how much coordinated movement is needed. An ideal way to keep fit in winter - and to enjoy nature when doing it.

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING?
All information about cross-country Practial: Many cross-country regions are easy to get to. They lie mostly in the German low mountain range and are renown for their snow certainty. The track setter manages (even with only a small amount of snow) to make a trainings-round of a couple of kilometres. Of course the panorama is better in the Alps, but the region around the Black Fo rest , i n H esse n ’s regions; Odenwald or even in the northern Harz mountains are eye catchers. Two basic types of cross-country; classic and skating: Cross-country skiing is not only cross-country skiing. Principally, there are differences made between the classic and skating types. The classic cross-country (also named Diagonaltechnik) is when the vehicle m a ke s p a ra l l e l trails in which the
68 | radon-bikes.com
skier skis. Impetus can be achieved with rhythmical stepping motions when the grip of the strongly pre-stressed ski is pressed into the snow. With special gripwax or a scaly structure in the middle of the ski, a push-off forwards is possible. When skating, the cross-country skiing trail is non-existent. Here the trail is a wide path. The movement is similar to ice-skating, and there is help f ro m p o l e s t o g i ve momentum. Skating is faster than classic cross-country skiing and the strain on your body is more intensive.
It’s all about technique: Firstly: It is not really difficult. Those who have never before stood on skis will (at first) have problems with keeping balance. As in nearly every sport, moving forwards is not really strenuous when you know how to do it! So that a speedy sense of achievement is reached, we recommend that beginners visit a cross-country ski school. There you can learn the basics, the different rhythms that prepare you for your first ‘on your own’ tries. Don’t get disheartened; the first two days are the worst. Practise makes perfect!
Equipment and accessories: Not only clothes are important, but also poles, skis, a binding and correct shoes. For the beginning, it’s probably better to borrow than buy. This is normally not very expensive and saves spending money before knowing if cross-country skiing is really the ting for you. Then, whether skating or classic, wax-ski or scales, plus the right length of the poles, there is so much to think about and at the beginning, it is so complicate d to k n ow what is really necessary and what not. The
same rule applies for clothing; it has to be f u n c t i o n a l ; n o t to o thick, not too thin – thin enough to transport sweat and to wick away wind and moisture and of course protect you from the cold and snow. Especially important are good gloves, a comfortable hat. Cold ears and pain in your fingers spoils any kind of fun! Here is a view of some German cross-country skiing regions www.bergfex.de/ deutschland/ langlaufen
Know How Wax ski The wax ski is used for the classic cross-country skiing and is sanded over the whole area. The ski is then prepared with wax – this makes the ski faster. In the middle there is a special grip wax, which sticks to the snow when pressed. But be careful; the wax must fit to the temperature of the snow, otherwise the ski sticks (literally) to the snow or it slides (very quickly – and you with it!).
Scale-ski or Nowax-ski Classic cross-country skis with scales in the mid-area of the skis, Scale skis are uncomplicated and good for beginners. Skating ski Shorter skis with stable skating binding. Skating skis have a sliding surface, no grip surface. They are shorter so that they don’t disturb in movement.

ALP DISCUSSION (not to be confused with a ‘regulars’ table’) A good friend of mine and I had a discussion with a local about the theme of mountain biking and the common usage of tracks and trails. We (bikers) were in Vinschgau – an area that we’ve been visiting regularly over the last six years, and have observed many changes over these six years (we were there when the first signposts for tourists were put up!). The local favoured separation; special trails for bikers and special trails for hikers. His wife didn’t agree with him. We were on the wife’s side! But we wanted to know why this man’s opinion was so. He said that mountain bikers abuse the trails so much and the trails are, strictly speaking’ tracks for hikers, not for bikers. Because of those bikers, tracks have to be repaired, that’s why there should be separate tracks. Is that the solution?
Text: Norman Bielig
This is a phrase used in German-spoken areas. You won’t find this phrase in any English dictionary (at least not at the moment), except ‘by fair means and foul’, which has a completely different meaning. This phrase is used in climbing sport, when, for example on a mountain expedition no artificial aid is used. Artificial aid such as fixed ropes, load carriers or bottled oxygen.
78 | radon-bikes.com
By fair means is an expression originating from climbing sports and is now being used more often when discussing other means of transportation, on either trekking tours or overseas travel. In an interview with Jörg Ruckriegel, a nature conservancy consultant, this phrase was again used. Relating to the increasing traffic in the Alps, the question, ‘Why do Alp clubs offer hiking across the Alps with luggage transport?’, the answer was ’Because it’s our wish to transport by fair means’. This does not quite fit the facts. A simple as well as exciting answer opened the diverse area of tension between ideals (but the question is whose ideals) and reality. Tensions that come from the needs of nature users and what nature needs, itself.
Comprehensive new tracks for different users? Is that a movement ‘by fair means’? The signposts in Vinschgau want tolerance from all types of users. Davos goes in the same direction. The old tracks are suitable for different means and many of them weren’t always trekking trails. Some were necessary connections to alpine huts, or were farmers’ routes, military roads and borders. Now bikers, who are using the newest technology and enjoying unique Alpine experiences, are using them. According to the Alpine Club, the infrastructure is completed now; no more climbing aid, no more construction projects, no more tracks have to be constructed. And why should there be new trails, climbing aid etc.? Hikers are content with the existing tracks – mountain bikers too. In an interview with the Black Forest Club, three press spokesmen gave the mountain bikers a new name; bike hikers. Why then separate the user groups?
Roman Schwienbacher doesn‘t only cordinate the tyding of paths, you often see him with a spade in his hand, helping.
IT IS OK THAT TRACK MAINTENANCE IS LOCALLY ORGANISED AND PAID FOR. IT IS A FACTOR IN THE RELATED SUPPLY CHAIN.

POINT OF VIEW
ACTIVE PATH MAINTENANCE
If we go back to the discussion at the beginning, the local wasn’t interested in ‘togetherness’ on the trails. But on the other hand, he hadn’t heard or experienced any conflicts when a biker or hiker met. Everybody who we had met in the week had been friendly and content with his or her pursuit. When we get down to the real problems, then they are: the state of the trails and the cost to repair them. Our counter-argument; the costs are paid for by the tourism association and the municipal board who advertise their region as a mountain bike region. Many alp owners favour mountain biking, and their profit increases because of it. What is nicer than to be at an alp hut with fresh cheese and bacon dumplings? Many of the local bed and breakfasts use more local products. Breakfast and evening meals come from local farms, cosmetics as well. The means of transport for these good are kept low. This is tourism, where farming, bed and breakfasts and hotels can work together. We think it’s ok that the local community pays for the trails – the local community profits from all the visitors. On the other hand this shouldn’t mean that bikers and hikers have a license to do what they want. Rubbish should be taken home with and not thrown away, we should avoid making deep tracks…. but why should we want to pollute the area? Perhaps we’ll be riding there again in the next couple of days – and we want a nice environment too. It should be taken for granted that people are treated politely and respectfully, whether biker or hiker, and that the roads and paths are perhaps work roads for locals. Anything else would be anti-social.
In our case it means going in the forest with the correct tools and doing maintenance work. Freeing plants form their spring coats, removing loose stones from the paths, taking left rubbish, and perhaps flatten a jumping hill.
Which doesn’t mean that we can only move forward in step speed. Every now and again we let the back wheels rotate, and ‘flicken’ only when necessary. If we are honest, nobody ever behaves 100 per cent as they should, but we have all to take responsibility for how we behave.
80 | radon-bikes.com
A short while ago the ORF (Austrian Television) asked people to go out and clean up trails and tracks. Live and let live, as the Bavarian say. Very sensible because if one behaves responsibly, nobody has any reason for counter-arguments. And when we take care of the forest paths and trails we have a new view to nature. When I think about how many days I spend on my home trails then why don’t I take one day off and start cleaning up. It is also a sensible activity to show children that there’s a lot of work necessary on forest tracks, paths and trails and this can strengthen their relationship to nature. Should only a fraction of mountain bikers take one day to clean up, lots of anti-MTBs would have no real arguments anymore. Not only that, but we would have tidy trails to ride. We could ride over obstacles - instead of around them. Hairpin bends could be taken without a shortcut. Braking actions without having to leave tracks behind and nearly every path has roots, stones or other obstacles – ideal natural jump elements – you just have to train your sight.
WHEN I THINK ABOUT HOW MANY DAYS I SPEND ON MY HOME TRAILS THEN IT SHOULD BE NO PROBLEM TO TAKE ONE DAY TO START CLEANING UP.
Even the legendary Wade Simmons helped Tide the paths. But not only here, the Canadian also helps keep things tidy at home.
By fair means im Bike-Sport? To get back to our meeting with the alp hut; we discuss a while longer, but then we notice that our main points go to the delicacies of the alp huts, the beautiful nature. Two points where we agree. The decision to help clean the tracks

A GREAT WAY TO IMPROVE THE PLAYFULLY TECHNIQUE!
The future belongs to the youth – so the saying – but how do we mange to get our kids away from their computers and back onto bikes? The answer is so simple – Pumptracks. Joost Wichman UCI 4x world champion 2013 and driver in Radon Flow Team, travels with a modular pump track from Bikeparkitecht through Europe and brings kids and youths this bike-sport nearer and playfully. Pump tracks are small BMX tracks with curves and waves. These elements are used to gain propulsion without pedalling. This is called pumping. Wichmann sees a great potential in these tracks because riding seems so playful and the tracks and riders just look so cool. Brings the kids away from the couch! The come with their dirt and BMX bikes, some with a skateboard and try out the tracks. This is skate-park 2.0
82 | radon-bikes.com
Wichmann, ‘the kids learn a lot and can work on the technical basics; of course it works for skate-bike kids, too. Amateur riders and even pros have discovered these tracks for themselves. They are all amazed how much fun it is, and at the same time can improve their technique. Because speed is reached by pumping, this works positively on curve-technique and balance. In the late 70s, the BMX riders started with pump tracks to work on their own technique. Nowadays pump track racing is an individual sport. For this reason we combine upbringing with pro races for MTB and BMX riders. So the kids can see the pros when racing and start to get interested in this sport. Pump tracks are getting more popular. The races more serious and are now an integral part on bike festivals e.g. in Crankworx. After Wichmann had won his champion title, he threw a party at a
club. As the party was in full swing, he organised, in the middle of the club, a pump track. The people loved it. This was the start for Wichmans’ ‘Pump battle events’ -the first pump-track-racing series. ‘I think that pump track racing could develop to a respected sport. This is one of the reasons why we want to have races over the whole of Europe. At every pro event there is a kids event. It’s important for us to get the kids away from the telly the more kids ride bikes, the better.’

WE LIVE. WE RIDE. WE CONQUER THE WORLD.
Wichmann uses a modular pump track that can be built everywhere. He can so bring sport to the people. During the events the kids get tips from pros, and the next day they have neck and neck races for victory on the same pump track. There is music; a commentator who heats up the spectators and the possibility to buy professionally cut videos and photos at all events.

Welcome to our Megastore Almdorf When walking into the Megastore, the first glance goes over to rustic huts, in their midst a couple of wooden seating facilities. We chose this theme because every time we see or smell wood, we are reminded of our adventures in the mountains. What is nicer than resting at an alpine hut at a high altitude with the smell of pines, sun, hay, fresh air and freedom? The pleasant summer months are nearly gone, the days are getting shorter and before we realise it, Jack Frost is telling us what we can do and what we can’t do. Instead of thistles and pines, we smell fog and rime, leaves and damp earth. For us, this means that is high time to make our Almdorf safe for the winter.
That’s why we are offering outdoor-clothing that give optimal protection, special insulation layers and made of functional fabrics. Clothing should defy cold and icy winds, the best premises for racy days on the slopes, tobogganing or ice-skating hours. You will find sensational offers in our Almdorf for the needs in the cold season. Get prepared for winter- it’s coming. H&S Bike-Discount MEGASTORE Auf dem Kirchbüchel 6, 53127 Bonn

Sensational success at the Downhill World Cup for Manuel Gruber Manuel is reigning Austrian champion and races in German and European Downhill Cups, not only that, but he has also started in a couple of UCI World Cup races. His debut by Radon was a very positive one, winning The DH Race in Croatian Losinj on a course that resembled a stone field. He managed second place in Val di Sol with a speedy run. In a certain sense, Manuel is our guinea pig when racing. Bodo Probst gave him the prototype model for downhillers – Swoop 27,5. Bodo now develops together with Manuel’s feedback. ‘The advantage of bigger wheels is that you have a better straight-run on quick routes’ says Manuel. Perhaps this helped him to his sensational success in the UCI DH World Cup in Windham, USA. Manuel left quite a few pros behind him
and managed the tenth place. This is, up till now, the best place in the World Cup that he has managed to achieve in his downhill career. Gruber, ‘I’m so thrilled. The qualification wasn’t that good. I rode solidly, but was only 57th. In the finals, I went full-risk…and it paid off. It was an unbelievable feeling, beating names like Gee Atherton and Greg Minaar…’ Such a success strengthens self-esteem. Back from the USA Manuel went directly to the iXS Cup in Pila, where, on a slippery and dusty route, he managed to reach his best time. In the overall ranking of iXS EDC, Manuel is now on the second place. We are crossing our fingers for him for the next race in Leogang.
The season 2014 is still here and at this point a review of the season’s highlights.

ELISABETH BRANDAU: HER OWN WILLPOWER HAS A STRONG OPPONENT BACK AT LAST: ANDI SIEBERG IN WILLINGEN Andi is a good example of someone, where fail and victory in Downhill lie together. With a lot of luck he overcame a fall on his back at the first race of the World Cup season in Pietmaritzburg in South Africa without any serious wounds. Whilst training in Winterberg he broke a couple of toes- that didn’t make walking easier! This didn’t stop him from the last race. His great hour came at the iXS German Downhill Cup in Willingen. Due to his long-lasting racing experience he was able to win this challenge. This first success gave him the necessary stimulus for the Scott Bang Battle in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, which he won - together with his team colleague
Jannik Abbou. The pendulum hit back whilst training; he injured his knee and suffered Concussion. We hope that when he’s finally better that the pendulum swings in a different direction.
Elisabeth and her team partner Martin Gluth are planning far in advance: Olympia 2016 is the target. The first races in 2015 calculate the points that will be used against each other. But Lisa shouldn’t worra about that. The most important race Fortuna was unluckily occupied so that the cross country cyclist had to accept defeat. Material defect, respiratory illness and collisions came one after another – a fate with which every sportsman and women have to learn to live with. But Lisa is a fighter and she shows this wherever possible. She won the long distance marathon race, i.e. 122 km and 3500 difference in altitude in Willingen. As she arrived at the finish it was clear to see how relieved she was.
Not only that, but she is also the champion of the Sella Ronda Hero Marathon, a real test of stamina of 62 km and 3300m difference in altitude. It’s clear that whichever project is offered, she takes the challenge and at the end, stands there with a smile on her face…
YOUNG, STRONG, CONSTANT. RAPHAELA RICHTER AND A REMARKABLE SEASON It’s quite phenomenal. Up to now Raphaela has never been worse than the third place in the Specialised Sram Enduro Series. In Willlingen, she managed her great coup, after so many second and third places, finishing as a winner there! After that, nothing could stop her and at the European Enduro Races; another victory! She is second in the overall placement of SSES and place four in the European Enduro Series. We hope that she’ll carry on to the top!
At the beginning of this year the 16-year-old Raphaela Richter was named ‘Hope for the German Enduro’. Hope was the first thing Raphaela left behind her, like most of her components. She is not only ‘hope’ now; she is an established racing-lady in enduro racing – in the whole of Europe, and that, although she has enough to do at school.

A SCOT ON THE ENDURO ROADTRIP James Shirley left his hometown, Fort William, at the beginning of the year to discover the endure world. Since then, he has driven with his bus ‘Dudes of Hazzard’ (in Radon design) through Europe, always on the look for new trails and best races. This sounds like an easy life – it’s not, he said! It was the beginning of May, eight o’clock in the evenings and I was clothed in a thick pulli, James said that he had to have a quick shower in Lake Garda – bike inclusive – I realised that such a journey could also be bothersome. But a dyed-in-the- wool Scotsman is made of stern stuff!
James needed quite a while to get used to the character of the Continental European Enduro races. He has proven himself. At the moment he is third ranking. His continually good achievement has paid off... he has good chances at the final sprint.

PUMPING, BATTELN AND ALWAYS NEAR TO THE RIVER Petrik Bruckner and Joost Wichmann are the Radon Flow team. Both of them are always on the road on their bikes, although they don’t want to be pinned down to the same style. 4X, Enduro, Megavalanche, Downhill…. both are devils of a fellow. Joost started in Willingen on his short-travel-bike Slide 160 Carbon in the German Downhill Cup and was ninth. Petrik did the same and finished as eleventh.
Petrik is good at enduro. This shows his ranking in the overall Specialised Sram Enduro Series – at the moment he’s third. Joost’s organised Pump Battle Events have much positive resonance, where he brings modular pump tracks in the city for kids, youths and pros. Next to the sporty part, he sees how important it is to get kids outside, away from the couch and computers, and to show them how much fun biking can be.
