We are thrilled to have Anneke van Giersbergen join our funky family! She is a very talented Dutch singer-songwriter and guitarist and her work inspires us and many others around the world as well. We spoke to Anneke about her inspirations, dreams and, of course, her favourite funky items. Read the full interview with her and join us in welcoming her among the funkiest people in the world!

This year once again you can expect inspiring collaborations with the artists on the main stage, our funky shop where you can have a chat with our team and upgrade your festival outfit and of course, festival grounds filled with funky looks, funky prints and most importantly, funky vibes! Ramon Brugman was one of the first creatives we worked with and we just love seeing how he styles every collection we release with the same artistic touch as he cooks.
We like to think that a funky beat in Andy Platts’ and Ondre J Pivec‘s songs might be inspired by the funky prints that they wear. And if not, we know for a fact that their music has inspired a print or two!

MAMAS GUN
It’s no secret that 4funkyflavours collections are inspired by music. We often turn on some of our favourite tunes and let our imaginations go wild. We talk to the artists, we watch their shows and we dream together with them.
One of our favourites from our source of inspiration is Mamas Gun. They are not afraid to get personal with songwriting. Their beats take over every cell of the listener and their charisma owns every stage they are on. Are we proud that part of their stage presence contains a peace of our hearts as well? Of course, but not for the reasons you might think.
We are PROUD that Mamas Gun are giving their own twist to our clothes. We might have listened to their music while the prints were designed but they give these prints a funky life that is beyond what we could have ever imagined. We always hope that whoever wears 4funkyflavours gives each item its own meaning. Mamas Gun seems to be doing just that - telling their story with a little bit of funkiness from us!

Anneke van Giersbergen
What are your earliest musical memories?
My parents listened to a lot of music. Beatles and Rolling Stones, but also quite a bit of classical music. I could completely lose myself in the magical sounds of the Peer Gynt Suite.
My older brother Jos listened to progressive rock, like Alan Parsons and Genesis. I often played records in his room, and together we discovered heavy rock and metal. We were hooked right away!
Who are your major influences?
As a teenager, Prince, because of his musical talent, and Madonna as a style icon. I also loved Kate Bush because she could do and did everything herself. As a singer, I was a huge fan of Barbra Streisand.
From the moment I became more interested in heavy rock, I quickly discovered Freddie Mercury and Mike Patton, also two amazing singers!
How is your tour going?
It’s going very well. This year, I’m playing about 80 concerts with my Heavy Strings project. These are my favourite hard rock / metal songs in a semiclassical arrangement for string quartet and piano. In addition, I’m playing some shows with my own 8-piece rock band.
What’s the most enjoyable experience you’ve had during your tour?
I’ve been travelling the world for over 25 years, so I’ve had many special and funny tour adventures. A well-known story is that the bus of my old band ‘The Gathering’ was directed to ‘the catering’ at Pinkpop by the traffic controllers, instead of to the artist entrance. Haha!

Which artist would you still like to meet?
Barbra Streisand. I think she’s a fantastic singer, and I used to listen to her a lot and learn from her. It’s also a bit scary because she naturally has a reputation as a diva, but I’m willing to take that risk!
What do you enjoy most about your profession?
Performing! I enjoy writing songs and recording them, but I love being on stage the most. Singing for an audience is the best. There’s a kind of connection that happens that I still find magical.
What do you like the most about 4funkyflavours?
Funky is colourful and the fit is great. I also really love the strong connection to music. You can tell by everything: the clothes, the vibe, but definitely also by the people who work there.
What’s your favourite funky item?
Too many to mention, but I have a few blazers with matching trousers that I absolutely love! I wear these both on stage and at home.
What would you still like to do in the near future?
I’m really looking forward to working on a new album. I’m performing a lot at the moment, which is great, but I have a lot of ideas for new songs, so I want to start writing and recording again.
If someone were to write a biography about you, what would the title of the book be?
That’s a tough question because it’s not something I’d like to cooperate with at the moment. It would have to be something about singing and my optimism. ‘Singing through Life’ or something like that? Or ‘Live Fast, Die Old’ Haha!
