Jody Stephens' Virtual Concert

benefiting church health and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

Jody Stephens, an original member of legendary band Big Star, organized an all-star virtual concert on January 24th to benefit Church Health and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. A longtime producer at Ardent, Stephens has made musical friends around the world over the decades and using a platform devised by entertainment streaming company In.Live, he was able to bring together musicians from a variety of locations in the US, France, and Canada. Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow of The Posies became members of a reconstituted Big Star some years ago and were eager to participate. Memphian Keith Sykes, a long-time member of Jimmy Buffet’s band, appeared with a solo performance. Stephens and Luther Russell who compose the duo Those Pretty Wrongs performed. Additionally on the roster were solo artists Skylar Gudasz and Sarabeth Tucek, Pat Sansone of Wilco, Audley Free of Sheryl Crow’s band, Gary Louis of the Jayhawks, Tom Petersson of Cheap Trick, Rich Tupica of There Was A Light, and Sadler Vaiden who plays with Jason Isbell. Following the performances, there was a panel discussion which included writers Bob Mehr and Justin Gage. The VIP tickets for the concert allowed ticket holders to pose a question on the stream. Viewers from the United Kingdom to America’s West Coast commented on the stream chat panel about the innovative quality of the concert and the sheer love of the music and musicians participating. Each Works of Heart artist is offered a 12” heart, packaged in a red mesh bag, to use as they like (if only for inspiration) to create their Works of Heart artwork. Dolph also incorporates ladders into his work to represent lifting each other up.

Recipes Take Center Stage:

Friends of the Orpheum Cookbook

By Sandi Butler Hughes Photography by Kristin Bennett, Orpheum Theatre Group

When attending a show at the Orpheum, the ushers who greet you are dedicated volunteers and members of a group known as “Friends of the Orpheum” (FOTO). For decades the group has served as ushers and ticket takers for every Broadway show, concert, ballet, and other events. These men and women have not only been gracious hosts to those attending the shows, they are also behind-the-scenes-hosts to the cast and crew of the touring Broadway productions. On Sunday afternoon for each Broadway production, between the matinee and final performance, FOTO serves a home-cooked Usher Dinner for up to 150 people in the tour. For the actors and stage hands, it is a welcomed and wildly popular expression of Southern hospitality. As Jose Solivan, Company Manager for The Play That Goes Wrong, (and one of the last Broadway shows at the Orpheum in 2020) explains, “I’ve toured now for many years, with almost 20 tours, and there are certain cities you always look forward to…Memphis is one of those cities. The city, the food, Graceland, the Civil Rights Museum, the beautiful folks at the Orpheum AND THE USHER DINNER! Every member of the company looks forward to this generous dinner...the collard greens were perfection….the cornbread casserole…and the BANANA PUDDING! I can’t wait to return!” On their 40th anniversary in 2017, FOTO was awarded The Star of Touring Broadway Award. The award was presented by The Broadway League, the producers of the Tony Awards, and according to the League’s website, was awarded in large part to the Usher Dinner: “For over 25 years, FOTO members have prepared a home cooked meal for every Broadway show that has come through the Orpheum, feeding upwards of 18,000 total cast and crew members in that time. The group helps shape memories for the over 250,000 people that pass through the Orpheum and perform on its stages year after year.” Recently, FOTO released a cookbook, The Cast Party: A Collection of Recipes by the Friends of the Orpheum. It is filled with many of the recipes served at the Usher Dinners, anecdotes from the casts and crews, and is another expression of the commitment of the FOTO members. “Through the dedication of the FOTO cookbook committee and the many members that make up this incredible volunteer organization, this cookbook represents the 25-plus years of our FOTO tradition in providing a home-cooked meal for the Broadway touring companies,” said Elena Ross, Chair of the FOTO cookbook committee. “It is a welcome addition to any family because it not only satiates the appetite but fills up the heart as well.” For more information or to order The Cast Party cookbook, visit orpheumgiftshop.com
