TWITTERING ON BY ANGELA KELLY

DO WE NEED A RADICAL APPROACH TO COMBAT ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOUR? There are many people (and I’m one of them) who are enthusiastic advocates of the short, sharp shock treatment and it’s plain that it can work.

Success story makes anything seem possible RAGS to riches type success stories always stir the blood but, quite often, you just can’t see yourself emulating this. Sally Fielding’s route to an extremely successful company is the exception, however. She started her holiday homes’ company in Keswick, Cumbria, more than 15 years ago with just £1,000 and it has since become a multi-million pound company.

I always admire the former drug addicts, reformed gang members and all-round bad boys and girls who go into schools to relate their own lives to youngsters in the hope of discouraging them from making such lifestyle mistakes. Their stories can resonate with younger people in a way that a dozen timely warnings or cautionary tales from parents just can’t.

T

HERE have been several programmes about how to tame rebellious teens over the years.

Let’s face it, this is not a new problem and, much as the older generation would like to think they would never behave like that, it’s a fair bet that some of us did once. But what really works? We’ve seen the army bootcamp idea which certainly had some amazing results but a recent Channel 4 series, Banged Up: Teens Behind Bars had a novel if radical approach. This put eight British teens between 15 and 17 - who had got into trouble with the law in the UK for anti-social behaviour - to one of Florida’s toughest prisons. As well as being alongside some very hardened criminals, they were given tasks and had to endure a variety of physical education “punishments”. In the final episode, they were taken to the morgue to be shown the bodies of murdered gang members. Unsurprisingly, they did not cope well and viewers took to social media in a mixture of praise and concern.

6

Parents and grandparents sometimes find communication with teens difficult, anyway. There is often a natural antipathy on the part of teens for older generations, mainly because they sincerely believe they “couldn’t possibly understand” their lives even though they were teens once themselves. By having more and different systems and methods in place to tackle the problem of anti-social behaviour, we offer hope to families and whole communities. Prisons and young offender institutions today don’t always have the necessary capacity or cash to cope with a possible influx of young prisoners. In any event, youngsters may come out with more criminal “skills” than when they went in. I know that TV programmes like the Banged Up series look at an extreme way of dealing with wayward youngsters but perhaps we need extreme answers today. Certainly, victims of crime and communities blighted by anti-social behaviour would argue that ANYTHING that makes teens think twice about what they’re doing is worth trying.

Her business, Sally’s Cottages, is the only independent holiday lettings company for more than 100 cottages in the Lake District as others have been bought out by larger firms. Sally started the company in her spare bedroom and the first year earned £6,000. This was in a little village called Eskdale but it wasn’t long before a neighbour, having seen how Sally had got so many bookings for her own cottage, asked Sally to take on hers. By the end of that year, she was looking after three cottages, all in Eskdale, and now has 500 throughout Cumbria. Her story is not only inspiring but actually seems still achievable by the determined today. Sally not only built up her company in a solid and consistent way but she works in one of the most beautiful areas of the country every day. What’s not to love?! Critics 1 Directors 0 REALLY clever film critics often have stomachtwistingly funny lines although often cruel. Personal favourites include one critic’s take on the film Garfield as “marginally better than The Cat in the Hat, though that’s like saying suffocation is mildly more amusing than drowning.”

Comedian Mort Sahl’s comment on the epic film Ben Hur: “Love him, hated Hur.” And Peter Bradshaw in the Guardian’s opinion of Grace of Monaco as “a film so awe-inspiringly wooden that it is basically a fire-risk” all delight. Perhaps the film Isn’t it Romantic? Attracted the most succinct. Critic Leonard Maltin simply stated: “No.” Nature not the needle offers real beauty IT doesn’t seem very long ago that facelifts and fillers were the prerogative of the older rich and famous. Fast forward to 2019 and these treatments are now almost compulsory for any attractive young woman to remain just that. But, whereas the surgeon or beauty specialist figured in women’s lives after the age of 40, now young women in their early 20s and definitely in their 30s appear to believe they “need” this kind of intervention as a matter of urgency. Presumably, the pressure from reality TV shows to constantly look the part and regular airbrushing of photos even on social media, give an unrealistic idea of how “natural” beauty looks.

Certainly, the reality for many young women now is of Botox or other skin fillers and even cosmetic surgery on a regular basis. The result, though, is not always to enhance their beauty, whatever they think. It just makes them look related to each other. There is often an over-fullness of the lips, an unnatural tautness of the cheekbones and a slanting of the eyes that can give them the look of Botox Sisters. Anyone who has a different

type of beauty falls outside the current definition of the word. And don’t get me started on eyebrows! When did resting slugs take over ordinary eyebrows? While it’s easy to understand women – and men – wanting to stay young-looking, what does the future then hold? More Botox? More treatment? Soon, it will be impossible to distinguish between the advanced smoothness of robots and real people.

THE DELIGHTS OF HOLIDAY COTTAGES IN CORNWALL BY JENNIE CARR FROM SILVER TRAVEL ADVISOR Land’s End

Engine House

T

here is no doubt that Cornwall gets in your blood, and more specifically, North Cornwall down to Land’s End. What happens as you drive along the A30, traffic jams abounding in the summer, is a change of pace, a return to a simpler life and the reality of nature. It seems that when you arrive at Indian Queen’s, the turnoff for Newquay, you really do enter a different country. The black and white flag of the county is in abundance, as a sign of tourist affection but also on occasion as a result of the strong sense of identity and separateness of a place so far away from London. We’re off to stay in a rented cottage, a treat we’ve enjoyed over the years, starting when the children were small and continuing now as we embrace our empty nester status. That said, we’ve still had some jolly times, hosting our adult brood and their partners in a larger house, with space for us all! We’ve stayed in some quirky places, houses so different to our own, and choosing a

8

different one each year has become a pleasant evening’s pastime, adding to our anticipation of time in Cornwall. Just mentioning the name makes me think of barbeques on the beach, superb fresh fish dinners in humblelooking pubs and a sense of freedom. Suburbia it is not! A visit to the Eden Project at St Austell takes you to other worlds. Here under space age biomes, plants from across the globe flourish. The largest rainforest in captivity is remarkable, remember to take water, it’s really hot. The gardens are wonderful, however this is just the beginning – the food is good, the education centre for youngsters exceptional and the calendar of events reaches all ages. If ecology and sustainability is your bag, the Eden project will inform and delight. I always leave feeling amazed by the planet we live on and keen to grow the most unsuitable plants in my Home Counties garden.

Another serious favourite is the Minack Theatre at Porthcurno. If you like a view, you’ll find it here! It is the astonishing result of human inspiration and intervention on a cliff face. The seats are not quite, but almost, vertically hanging above the stage, looking out to sea. When I saw Kneehigh Theatre’s ‘Tristan and Isolde’, swarms of pirates (all actors) climbed the cliff face to appear at the edge of the stage, terrifying us all. Every production utilises the dramatic setting to tremendous effect. We have celebrated birthdays there, wrapped in rugs and fleeces (the show must go on), marvelling at the actors’ ability to withstand the elements. For summer performances, book as soon as possible. And so to the beaches, glorious, varied and wild. You cannot tame the sea! The surfing is excellent, my knees and stamina now sadly lacking, so graceful body boarding has taken its place. All ages, all shapes and all abilities

Watergate Bay

plunge into the waves in wetsuits, tee shirts and the hardy in swimsuits. The water on the north shore is, after all, the Atlantic. Polzeath is a real pull for families of tourists, you park on the beach, with shops close by providing everything you could ever want. And, years of experience tell me, you are bound to bump in to someone you know! Other favourites are Watergate Bay, famous for Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen restaurant (good food, book early), excellent walking along the cliff tops, and the chance of spotting a basking shark too. Fistral Bay in Newquay hosts many world famous surfing competitions, being a spectator now satisfies the daredevil in me. Try Sennen too, just before Land’s End, for wild waves and a great beachside restaurant. My ultimate favourite is Gwenver, we sat on the cliff top, drinking wine (you do need to bring your own), watching the sunset as dolphins played in the bay. It was nature for real, magical and unforgettable. Art lovers are in for a treat too. Galleries in Newlyn, St Ives and Mousehole offer a huge range from the frankly tacky to the excellent, much of it homegrown. The Penlee Museum in Penzance contains unexpected joys, more

traditional but equally worthy of merit to those in the Tate and the Barbara Hepworth Sculpture Garden in St Ives. St Just, a place time nearly forgot, surprised me with a couple of quality artist owned galleries. Once you start to look and poke about off the immediate tourist track, little treasures emerge, the Essex Tyler gallery in Mousehole and Badcocks in Newlyn being fine examples. Everywhere you go, proud chimneys of decaying tin mines litter the countryside, testament to the importance the industry once played. To really get under the skin of this county, a visit to Geevor tin mine at Pendeen is a must. You can go into the mine and visit the works, guided by a retired Cornish miner. It’s eerie, poignant and a further reminder of the importance of the physical world in Cornwall. What hit me most was that this mine only closed in 1990, and yet the conditions seem Victorian, if not earlier. Cornish miners were famous and travelled worldwide, in fact more Cornish pasties are sold in Bolivia than in Cornwall, or so I’m told.

Each evening, having had our fill of sea, sand, village wanderings and, if our luck’s been in, a fabulous sunset, we return to our cottage, delighted to be staying, once again, in our favourite county! Take your National Trust card and walking boots, visit Tintagel, eat in Padstow – the list is endless. Cornwall is an exceptional county (country maybe), with mystery, history and awe-inspiring natural beauty. Original Cottages brings together a super range of holiday homes within its family of local agencies. From Cornwall to the Lake District, they have over 4,000 unique properties to choose from, including renovated fisherman’s cottages, barn conversions, seaside apartments and grand family townhouses as well as a good selection of dog-friendly cottages. LEGAL | 50 PLUS MAGAZINE

They’ll advise you of what you can and can’t do and point out things that you never even thought to consider so that you’re absolutely clear about the choices you’re making. A solicitor will ensure the will is legally binding rather than leaving it to fate like DIY wills all too often do. If you haven’t sorted out your will and you’re not sure what to do, here’s a list of some of the things to think about: How much do you think your estate is worth? Start by making a list of your all your assets. These will include your home or any property you own, savings, stocks and shares or premium bonds and don’t forget about any online accounts you may have. Include pensions, life insurance, endowments or policies that will pay out on your death.

DIY WILLS THE CAUSE FOR RISE IN INHERITANCE DISPUTES

Next, list your physical assets.Your car or other vehicles you own should be noted, as should any jewellery, artwork, family heirlooms or antiques. What about other items? Televisions, music systems, gadgets etc. will all have a value whether that’s financial or sentimental, so don’t forget those.

N

Finally, outline your debts. Outstanding mortgages, loans, credit card balances, overdrafts or equity release plans will all need to be paid out of your estate so make it easy for those you leave behind by listing these.

ew research carried out by insurance provider, Royal London has revealed that 54% of UK adults don’t have a will. This is a scary statistic when you think about how many people have assets that are really worth something. The rise in house prices over the last decade alone have pushed the value of people’s estates higher and higher, making those who thought they had very little actually have quite a lot. Although people are getting their affairs in order through the proper channels, others are turning to DIY wills to avoid the cost of using a solicitor. While they may be cheap, DIY wills only allow you to draft the most basic of wills and anything other than straightforward can cause problems. Wills are official legal documents which need to be written in a certain way and contain the correct terminology. The law around probate is complex and if you aren’t familiar with the process, it’s easy to incorporate ambiguous wording which could be misinterpreted, or make a mistake that can invalidate the will altogether. Modern family structures are changing and financial arrangements are becoming increasingly complicated, so it’s more

14

important than ever to make sure your will is right. If it’s not, it could leave your loved ones in a legal minefield after your death or worse still, end up with family members falling out and settling disputes in court. In fact, Royal London found that the number of inheritance disputes being heard by the High Court has risen by 59% in the last year. Although there are other underlying reasons, the increase has largely been attributed to the number of DIY wills being filed. So, the moral of this tale is don’t leave it to chance; seek guidance from a solicitor.

Judith Bromley Russell & Russell

Doing it for the kids Nominate who you would like to care for your children if anything happens to you before they reach 18. Naming a guardian for your children means you get the choice of who looks after them rather than who the state thinks they should live with. Who gets what This is the bit that can cause all manner of fallouts. It’s entirely up to you who you leave money or possessions to, but it’s important to be absolutely clear about who you want to have them and what exactly it is you want them to have. And remember, it doesn’t just have to be your immediate family; it can be cousins, friends, organisations or charities, whoever you want. Another thing to think about is who you would gift your inheritance to if the beneficiaries you originally choose die before you do. Also, if you do decide to leave money to a charity, make sure you include its full name, address and registered charity number within your will because without it, the charity may not be eligible for your gift.

Who’s going to do the honours? Choosing your executor should never be under estimated. As long as they’re over 18, you can choose anyone to be your executor, but remember this is the person who’ll distribute your estate after you’ve died so make sure you choose someone who is capable as it can involve a lot of work and responsibility. Validating your will The will itself needs to be signed by you and two independent witnesses in each other’s presence. It’s worth noting that your witnesses can’t be a beneficiary of your will otherwise they’ll lose the right to their inheritance. This principle also applies to the witnesses’ spouses or civil partners. It’s also a good move not to ask an executor to be a witness. If, for any reason, you can’t physically sign the will, it should be signed on your behalf with you present and contain an additional clause that you understand the contents of your will and that you’ve made your will voluntarily and without pressure from anyone else. You can still draft your will if you have a degenerative mental illness like dementia, as long as you still have mental capacity. To do this you’ll need a clause within it confirming that you understand the contents of your will before it’s signed. You might also need a medical practitioner’s statement at the time the will is signed, certifying that you understand what you are signing. Storing your will First thing’s first, tell your executor where your will is. Of course, you can keep it yourself, but it’s advisable to leave it with your solicitor who can provide you with a copy for reference. When storing your will, make sure you don’t attach any documents to it because if paperclips or staples become separated from the will and leave marks, it could raise questions about whether the will is missing any parts or amendments. Updating your will If your circumstances change – you get married, divorced, have children etc. – you need to reflect this in your will. This can’t be stressed enough because if, for example, you’ve made provisions in your will for all or part of your estate to go to your children, and you remarry but don’t update your will, the laws of probate dictate that your estate will go to your new spouse. Once they die that estate will be passed on to their children, or whoever they’ve named as beneficiaries in their will, potentially bypassing your children altogether. Lastly, once you’ve updated your will, make sure you destroy any earlier versions to avoid confusion. Despite the need to have a will many people avoid it, but the reality is that without a will you’ll die intestate which means it’s the state that decides who inherits your assets, not you. A will is the only way to make sure your money, investments, property and possessions go to those who you want to benefit from them. At Russell & Russell, we specialise in will writing. We’re accredited to the Law Society Wills and Inheritance Quality Scheme, which sets the benchmark for best practice and transparency in setting up wills and estate planning. We offer a free, no obligation consultation so that you can decide what you want to do and what’s best for you. www.russellrussell.co.uk 15

JASON DONOVAN

THE COUNTRY’S FAVOURITE ANTIPODEAN

J

ASON Donovan was having an extremely busy time when we spoke but looking forward to a well-earned break with his family. Well, not content with undergoing a hectic schedule of “an evening with…” type show dates right across the UK, the popular Aussie was also in the middle of co-producing a forthcoming tour of “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”. As this was his first time as a producer rather than starring in the quirky iconic hit musical (based on the comedy drama film) chronicling the adventures of three friends travelling across Australia – he was meeting new challenges. But then, possibly the country’s favourite antipodean has always been keen to take on new challenges when it comes to his career. The youngster with the squeaky clean image and the then fashionable mullet hair-do first came into Brits’ consciousness on our TV screens in Aussie soap Neighbours in the 1980s as Scott Robinson. He had been born in Melbourne, the son of actor Terence Donovan (who was Doug Willis in Neighbours). After his parents separated, Jason lived with his father and made his first TV appearance at 11 in a guest role in a series called Skyways in 1980. He went into Neighbours in 1986 and his character quickly became a favourite, not least because of his burgeoning onscreen teen romance with pretty Charlene Mitchell, alias Kylie Minogue. Jason won a Logie Award – the first of many – as Best New Talent in 1987 and also appeared in a World War II mini-series The Heroes which broadened his acting credentials. Scott and Charlene’s romance and subsequent wedding on Neighbours had, by then, firmly established the couple in the public’s mind. So, when Kylie decamped to the UK to a recording contract and an association with Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman’s hits’ stable, it was inevitable that Jason would follow. 16

As a result, Jason and Kylie singing together created a monster hit for “Especially For You” before Jason’s own single “Too Many Broken Hearts”, reached No.1. His debut album “Ten Good Reasons” also topped the album charts and his next single - a cover of Brian Hyland’s “Sealed With A Kiss” - leapt to the top of the singles’ charts. Jason was here to stay. More hit singles and albums followed. In tandem with his musical career, though, Jason branched out into a theatrical career. He accepted the lead role in the re-staged London Palladium version of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat” and had

a UK No.1 hit single with “Any Dream Will Do” from the show. Now, the lad from Neighbours was not only a pop star but also a bankable box-office musical star. The ‘90s proved more challenging for Jason with a damaging libel action against The Face magazine and a struggle with his own drugs’ demons. But, a determination that has been the trademark of his career and his undoubted talent won through and in 1998, he took the lead role of Dr Frank N Further in the UK to9uring production of “The Rocky Horror Show”.

During this time, he met stage manager Angela Malloch who became his partner; the couple have since had three children and live happily in London. Other roles in stage musicals, successful tours, numerous TV shows then and since and taking part in jungle reality show “I’m A Celebrity ….. Get Me Out Of Here!” have all helped cement the likeable Aussie into the UK entertainment scene. In 2008, he released his first album for 15 years Let It Be Me and the following year appeared for the first time in the London stage musical production of “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”. At home, the film had “already been part of my life for many years,” he explained during a break from touring at his London home. His main role as Tick, a drag queen, showed not only Jason’s versatility but also his sense of fun and willingness to challenge himself. His love of the show has lasted 10 years and taken him on many tours. “So when I was asked if I wanted to try co-producing, I decided straight away,” he stated. “I already loved the product and to be successful as a producer you have to believe in it first.” This new “role” has proved fascinating. ”It’s very different from being in a show,” he added. “For a start, you have to find the money which is another challenge. You have to flex other muscles.” However, he managed to maintain his original links with the show by reading through with the actors “which I really enjoyed”. The new show, which starts a comprehensive tour at venues from Milton Keynes to Manchester, promises to be “quite different”. Strictly Come Dancing winner Joe McFadden is taking over the role that Jason made his own and Jason is completely complimentary about Joe’s skills. “He’s doing a fantastic job,” he commented. They were just about to go into the rehearsal stage and the whole venture was providing an interesting juggling act for Jason, also mid-tour with his “Amazing Mid-Life Crisis” show. This had definitely meant stepping out of his comfort zone but Jason was loving the

different format of a conversation show, sharing moments from the last four decades. “I’m quite an honest person,” insisted Jason, now 50, “so I try to tell people quite honestly about my life. It’s a format that seems to work and audiences have been very warm. In fact it’s all about the audience.” Jason described the show as a “cross between Parkinson and Baz Luhrmann” and it is certainly going well: the tour includes a large number of sell-out dates with more added from the original schedule.

Is it not draining, though, talking about yourself on such an intense tour? “Not when you’ve had to get used to giving eight stage performances a week for months and not being home for six months at a time,” laughed Jason. And with that, it was back to his clutch of current exciting roles and yet another chapter in the fascinating life of Jason Donovan.

any people think that when they’re clutching their Decree Absolute, that this is the end of the matter. Few realise that spouses can each still make financial claims against the other if they have not obtained a clean break financial order from the court. There are different ways of resolving financial claims;

Ceri Thomas, KBL Solicitors Family Law Solicitor

1) Directly with your spouse 2) Via mediation 3) Using collaborative law 4) Arbitration 5) Via solicitors 6) By issuing financial remedy proceedings with the court. If you manage to agree a financial settlement without financial proceedings being issued then to ensure this is legally binding it is essential that you get the agreement incorporated into a court order. If the agreement is intended to be in full and final settlement of all financial claims arising from the marriage then it is also essential that the consent order records this and dismisses all future financial claims, whether these be relating to lump sums, maintenance, property or pensions. The only other way of bringing an end to financial claims after divorce is remarriage because there is no time limit on when a financial claim can be brought. It is not uncommon for people to bring financial claims years after they have separated and/or divorced. However this may prejudice your claim as the court will consider the circumstances and the needs of the parties as they stand at the time the matter comes before the court and not as they were at the time the parties separated. Even remarriage will not always stop a financial claim. For example if you were the Petitioner in the divorce and you included a financial claim in your divorce petition then the fact you have remarried will not prevent you from making a financial claim against your former spouse. Resolution of financial matters is a complex area, therefore if you are looking to issue your own divorce it is still always worthwhile to seek advice from a family lawyer to ensure you are protected. In many cases where matters are agreed, we are able to offer fixed fees to deal with the divorce and obtain a financial consent order. For a free no obligation appointment please call BOLTON:

TOP COLOUR TIPS FOR CRAFTERS BY HELEN VENABLES, MD OF HOUSE OF COLOUR. Whether you love flower arranging, sewing, knitting, gardening, jewellery-making, cake decorating, paper crafting, card making, quilting or scrapbooking, you will always have colours and styles that suit you and you are drawn to. But why is it that you find yourself drawn to mushroom and powder pink or perhaps you love pine green and royal blue? We all suit different colours and have different style personalities that will not only be reflected in what we wear, but in our homes, our belongings, hobbies and treasured items. Let’s look at the importance of colour. 1. Why we suit the colours we do? In the 20th century the Swiss artist Johannes Itten, who worked and taught at the Bauhaus School of Art in Germany, is attributed with being the first person to associate colours with four types of people and the twelve point colour wheel which is widely used today on paint charts for home decorators, in dyeing kits and in hairdressers’ colour charts. Itten and others, through their involvement with colour, established that each individual has a basic skin pigment which falls into one of four groupings which are defined by the unique combination of depth, hue and tone. In colour analysis the groups that suit warm tones are Spring and Autumns and the groups that suit cool-based colours are Summer and Winter. 2. How important is colour? Colour is up to 90% responsible for our first impressions of one another and the same probably goes for your home and treasured items. 3. So which colours work together? Understanding how colours work in harmony and in contrast is key to success. Colour also needs to complement the environment it is going to be in. We all have 36 principal colours that suit us as well as all the tones that sit comfortably between those colours and these should all work well together. This is why striking-coloured sofa 20

cushions, rugs and paintings for example are so good to add as powerful colourful additions to a living-room that might otherwise be in neutral or muted colours. 4. What do I need to consider with colour? Not only do you need to consider the hue, but the saturation or intensity of colour is important. As the saturation increases, the colours appear to be purer. Keep in mind chroma (how pure a colour is, ie the lack of white, black or grey added to it) tones, shades and tints when creating colour schemes. Start with two colours and then work your way up from there to a maximum of five colours in any given colour scheme. 5. What are wow colours? We all have our own wow colours that always look amazing when worn close to our face and that we are drawn to. Colour is a great agent for zestiness in any beautiful bunch of flowers, cushion-cover or jewellery piece. 6. How do we know which neutrals to use? Autumn colour palettes suit rich, warm earthy colours such as dark brown, tan, oyster, coffee, khaki, lizard grey, dark olive and marine navy, whilst Springs suit warm, clear colour choices like chocolate, beige, dove grey, bright navy, tan, honey and

cream. Winters love deep, cool colours such as silver, greys, charcoal, indigo, black, mole and stone. Summers suit cool, subtle neutrals such as pink beige, mushroom, rose brown, dark blue grey, light blue grey, soft navy and burgundy. 7. What about Monochrome? Monochrome is usually taken to mean black and white but can also refer to the use of only one colour. Our eyes prefer colours to black and white because we remember coloured versions of images as they appeal to our senses more, causing an enhanced memory of it. Single colour schemes are easy to create but can also be considered a little boring so purposely adding in strong colour accents can help keep things interesting. 8. How does colour affect our mood? If you are wearing the right colours you will be more memorable, look brighter and healthier. Similarly, if your home is full of the colours and tones that truly suit you then you will feel calm, authentic and able to relax. But how can you create a happy home if you perhaps suit warm muted colours and your partner suits bright cool colours? It’s tricky! The truth is one of you is likely to be more interested than the other in colours in the home so the decisions will often come down to that individual, but it is hard to meet in the middle with colour. To be on the safe side, aim for more muted colours which are less saturated because everyone needs to feel comfortable in their home. www.houseofcolour.co.uk

STEVE HOWARTH'S TEST DRIVE An in depth look at four popular models

KIA CEED I KNOW I have said this before but Kia really are going to have to change their promotional message - as it is simply no longer true! ‘The power to surprise’ is what the Korean manufacturer proudly proclaims, referring to how good their cars are… but I am no longer surprised when I get behind the wheel of one of their vehicles. That is because I now expect Kias to be good cars as they have established a reputation for build quality, reliability and eye-catching design. I would be surprised if it were a BAD car! Let’s face it, any car maker who offers a 7 year, 100,000 mile warranty has got to be confident of their products… and here in the UK we have clearly got the message, just look at how many Kias are on our roads. I got the chance to review three versions of their best-selling Ceed model at a recent driving day starting with the super practical Sportswagon 1.4T-GDi. It was in top range ‘First Edition’ spec so came with features like 17” alloy wheels, 22

smart leather seats (powered with memory function for the driver, heated and ventilated in the front, heated in the back), cruise control, heated steering wheel, smart power tailgate, touchscreen DAB infotainment and sat nav, wireless phone charging and a whole raft of safety systems designed to keep you out of trouble. At £27,805 on the road it is at the top end of the Ceed price range but compares well with similarly specced rivals which are a bit pricier. The 1.4 T-GDi Sportswagon will do 0 to 60 in a very respectable 8.8 second and go on to a top speed of 130mph while returning up to a shade over 52 mpg day-to-day. If you want to spend £3,000 less then the ProCeed could be the one for you. I tried the 1.6 CRDi in high spec GT-Line trim and while slightly reduced bhp (134) meant 0 to 60 in 10 seconds there is still an ample top speed of 124mph and consumption figures which also mean saving money as this version of the Ceed will return up to 67.7 mpg. You will be hard pressed to notice the difference in performance though and it still boasts most of the kit list mentioned above… although if it is performance you are after then the Ceed GT is the one to go for.

I tried out a bright red 1.6 TGDi (201bhp) and it was definitely a true hot hatch with 0 to 60 taking just 7.2 seconds and a great soundtrack from those impressively-huge rear pipes. Top speed is up to a highly illegal 143mph and the GT handles well thanks to gas-filled struts and a fully independent MacPherson suspension system with rear anti-roll bar. There are also beefier brakes to deal with the improved performance via larger ventilated discs. As you would expect there is a cost to that extra performance in fuel economy but the six-speed manual GT can still return up to a shade over 44mpg. The 2019 Ceed range starts from £18,600 for the entry level version and no Ceed is poorly equipped, the 2 gets luxuries like air-con, cruise control, all-round electric windows, a 7.0in touchscreen with smartphone connectivity and a reversing camera. Upgrade to 3 trim and you’ll also get dual-zone climate control, rain-sensing wipers and larger alloy wheels. So maybe Kia now needs to rethink that strapline – perhaps The Power to Deliver?

More info at www.kia.co.uk

There are three trim levels - Active 1, Active B&O Play and our Active X. The differences are mainly inside, the Active 1 has a 6.5in touchscreen infotainment system, the B&O Play model adds premium speakers and an 8in touchscreen and the Active X gets heated door mirrors and a rear view camera. Active models start at around £18,000 for the Ecoboost 1-litre turbo with just over 80 bhp (0 to 60 in 12.5 seconds and a top speed of 105mph) and go up to the X 1.5 TDCi 120PS at £22.095 and all are 5-door cars.

FORD FIESTA ACTIVE X WHEN it comes time to replace what has been Britain’s best-selling car for some years there is a lot of pressure to get it right! The Fiesta has sold in huge numbers ever since the day the Mk1 rolled off the production lines in the very late 1970s. We Brits loved it and I have fond memories of my old mum driving Fiestas for decades – surprisingly with hardly any incident.

and down kerbs, through potholes and over gravelly car parks and tracks without any fuss.

So I was particularly looking forward to our latest test car – the Fiesta Active X. The latest Fiesta was launched last year and Ford then decided to make the beefed up Active X version to give the nation’s favourite small hatchback a bit of a more rugged look.

Yet it still drives like an ordinary Fiesta without the body roll of an SUV or the fuel consumption – this 1.0 Ecoboost three-pot motor will do a shade under 50mpg and feels quite nippy around town.

So the Active X boasts a (slightly) raised ride height, crossover-style cladding, and modified suspension with a little wider track plus bigger profile tyres.

While there’s no four-wheel drive option selectable modes give Eco, Normal and Slippery for different road conditions and you can also spec a 1.5 diesel if mpg is your main concern – although it is a bit heavier and slightly noisier.

If you don’t want a small SUV or a fullblown crossover then this could be the car for you. A Fiesta that is a bit easier to get in and out of and one which will take going up

There will be Active versions of the Focus and Ka soon and Ford reckons up to 15 per cent of Fiesta buyers will choose the Active.

Standard on the Active X are niceties like power fold door mirrors with ‘puddle’ lamps, part leather seats (heated in the front), rear view camera and parking sensors, a heated windscreen and that must have feature – illuminated cup holders! Also found on the ‘rugged’ Fiesta are smart 17” allow wheels, ‘Active’ badges on the front wings and threshold plates, cruise control, silver roof rails, keyless entry and start and a whole host of safety systems. I used the Active X for a weekend break visiting friends in the North East with my much better half and she was impressed by the car’s comfort and relative amount of interior space. I was impressed by the ‘real world’ MPG I achieved, a shade over 47 for the 250-mile round trip, which is not far off Ford’s claimed figures for extra urban driving. That 1-litre Ecoboost three cylinder petrol engine was also more than happy at motorway speeds and surprisingly quiet as three-cylinder cars are usually a bit ‘thrummy’ on acceleration. So after a week at the wheel of the ‘beefedup’ Fiesta the verdict was that it is a super little car… but that is no surprise as the basic new Fiesta is also great – and starts from £16,000 on the road.

BENTLEY

CONTINENTAL GT I RECENTLY went on what has become an annual petrol head pilgrimage with motors mad pals to the Silverstone Classic. And as usual it was a crucial part of the weekend of automotive action to select the right car to go down in – but this year there really was only one choice. Because Bentley are celebrating their 100th birthday and they have a new version of their best-selling Continental GT, which was kindly offered as my transport to the historic circuit. With 626 bhp from its glorious W12 engine giving a 0 to 60 time of 3.6 seconds and all the performance you could desire, plus the very latest technology including night vision and the sumptuous luxury we have come to expect from Bentley over the years, this really is a fabulous machine. It has a highly illegal top speed of 207 mph and trumps the previous version in every department – which it has to do as the Continental is Bentley’s best-selling car ever. Looks wise the new car is even more impressive with subtle re designs keeping the famous GT look but in a bigger, bolder more muscular way giving street presence in spades.

26

Even though the Media/VIP car park at the circuit was filled with top end motors and exotic sports machinery the GT still stood out. And inside everything gets an upgrade including the infotainment system which is accessed via a rotating display that can show three analogue gauges, a 12.3 touchscreen or be hidden away behind a solid veneer facia. Other high tech bits of kit include a comprehensive heads up display, a powered spoiler which rises from the boot lid, automatic speed limit recognition built into the adaptive cruise control and a suite of advanced safety aids. Then there are various drive modes which the 4x4 car can be set to via its silky smooth eight speed auto gearbox including sport, which also beefs up the already impressive exhaust note from those two huge oval rear pipes. And when you don’t need all the power on tap (which is most of the time) that 6-litre twin turbo monster of an engine shuts down half of its 12 cylinders to give reasonable fuel consumption – I bettered Bentley’s claimed 23.9 mpg on the 150 mile journey to the event – mainly down to the many, many miles of roadworks on the M6 meaning 50mph limits.

So the Bentley was at its spiritual home as the company has seen huge track successes over those 100 years from the Blower Bentleys of the 1920 and 30s to Le Mans Victories stretching from the 1920s to 2003. And what a great weekend of automotive action only mildly dampened by some typically disappointing British summer weather – I felt particularly sorry for the guy trying to sell sunglasses in the rain! There were races for historic Formula 1, 2 and 3 cars plus sixty souped-up Minis in action battling other saloon car racers from the 1960s and 70s including Lotus Cortinas, Mustangs and Alphas. At the Silverstone Classic Auction a recordbreaking number of lots went under the hammer where us mere mortals could look on as the super-rich snapped up Ferraris, Astons and Porsches… although there were also numerous fast Fords, classic Mercedes and BMWs going through the sale but even here prices were not for the faint hearted. So a great time was had by all, especially yours truly who developed a smug grin while cruising around in the Bentley… until I had to hand it back! The new Continental GT starts from £159,100. More information at www.bentley.co.uk.

237bhp SD4 version plus two 2.0-litre petrols with 237bhp or 286bhp, both of which are only available in automatic. The Discovery Sport has plenty of grip so it holds the road well, with precise steering and minimal roll for an SUV. All four-wheel-drive models come with that Terrain Response system that gives a variety of drive modes including as grass, mud and sand which means the Discovery Sport is better off road than just about anything else in this price bracket.

DISCOVERY SPORT NOW I have to say straight away that I am a little biased when it comes to Land Rovers – there are currently three at Howarth Towers ranging in age from almost new to 24 years old. So when those awfully nice people at JLR said would you like to try out our latest special edition I jumped at the chance. The edition in question was the Discovery Sport Td4 LandMark which, despite it being currently the smallest vehicle they make, can be had with a full seven seats. And even though it is the baby of the Land Rover family the Sport is just as rugged and go anywhere as any of its more upmarket siblings. Although this Discovery Sport is also pretty upmarket with a long kit list and a price tag to match – from £39,990 (the Discovery Sport range starts from £30,000 for the 2WD 2eD4 Pure). For that you do get an awful lot of kit including power gesture tailgate, cruise control, an 8” touchscreen for infotainment systems including sat-nav and DAB radio, panoramic sunroof, perforated leather seats (heated and electric in the front), rear camera, a premium sound system and long list of safety features.

And then there is the legendary Land Rover go anywhere ability thanks to that tried and tested AWD system linked up to a raft of electronic aids like terrain response, hill descent control, hill start assist, traction control, dynamic stability control, roll stability control and trailer stability control and assist. To differentiate the LandMark edition there are also black and graphite body details and an Atlas graphics package. The cheapest and most economical Discovery Sport comes with a 148bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine in manual with FWD but our test car had the beefier 178bhp version which gave this compact 4x4 SUV a good turn of speed – 0 to 60 in 9.2 seconds and a top speed of 117. The LandMark Edition also has seven seats with the rear row a little cramped for fullsized adults but more than acceptable for short journeys or children. As well as that uprated engine the LandMark also has a superb nine-speed auto gearbox and for those who want even more performance there is a punchier

All Discovery Sports come with rear parking sensors and all but entry-level Pure and SE models have front sensors, too. A reversing camera is standard on HSE trim and upwards, and optional on lower trims. The interior of our Discovery Sport had a well laid out dashboard with quality materials used throughout and classy touches such as brushed-metal trim and a rising rotary gear selector. When the middle row of seats is slid back as far as possible there is ample rear legroom in five seat layout but when seven seats are needed that row can slide forward to share the somewhat limited room with the rearmost row. However, this is the only premium-badged car of its size to offer seven seats – you will have to go non-premium in something like a Peugeot, Hyundai or Kia which do also have a bit more room in the third row. The Discovery Sport is priced competitively against five-seat premium rivals such as the X3 or Q5 and in this LandMark version you get a very well specked vehicle for the money – especially as it is possible to spend almost £50 grand on a D 240 R-Dynamic HSE version!

FIND YOUR NEXT CORPORATE VEHICLE WITH BOLTON KIA’S BUSINESS USER AND FLEET TEAM

It’s been a successful year, so far, for Kia Motors (UK) Ltd. as the company reported record-breaking growth in March 2019, thus out performing the market in its first quarter whilst securing the title of Manufacturer of the Year in the 2019 National Franchised Dealers Association Awards (NFDA). Bolton Kia is currently the only whollyowned subsidiary of Kia Motors (UK) Ltd., and Europe’s No.1 Kia Dealer, with its own Business User and Fleet Team who have over seventy years combined experience in the industry, and understand the importance to having the right vehicle to create a great first impression. Businesses, large and small, can benefit from Bolton Kia’s latest fleet offers. Bolton Kia is proud to supply a wide range of Kia vehicles to businesses all over the UK. So whether you are looking for style, economics or reliability, whether you are

looking for one car or an entire fleet; our team will go the extra mile to help you find the right car to suit your business needs. The past year has seen Kia Motors (UK) Ltd. shake up the entire All-New Ceed family, in line with rising popularity and demand within its segment. The launch of the third-generation All-New Kia Ceed range secured a prestigious Red Dot Award for the design of all three new body styles. This triple triumph in the world-renowned design competition represents the second consecutive year in which Kia has picked up a hat-trick of Red Dot design awards, following similar success in 2018. The All-New Kia Ceed is lower and wider with a more dynamic and sportier appearance than previous generations, conveying a more self-confident look with straight lines, a wider ‘tiger-nose’ grille and precise, linear shapes framing its ‘face’. Meanwhile, the All-New Kia ProCeed features a completely new design for Kia, and is the first compact shooting brake from a mainstream manufacturer. It merges stunning, elegant design with the space and versatility of a tourer, standing out from its

siblings with its own unique posture and proportions. 1,422mm in height, it is the lowest vehicle in the family car segment. The defining element of its profile is the dynamic roofline, which ends in the steeply-raked rear windscreen. RECIPES FROM SEVILLE AND BEYOND BY JOSÉ PIZARRO

SLOW-COOKED PORK CHEEKS WITH OLOROSO SHERRY Pork cheeks generally are a flavourful cut, but when you try cheeks from Ibérico pigs, you will really notice the difference. Being acorn fed, the animals have very strong jaw muscles in order to break down the hard shells with their teeth. In addition, the oil from the acorns gives the meat a much richer, nuttier taste. INGREDIENTS Serves 6-8 people 1.5 kg (3lb 5oz) pork cheeks, preferably Ibérico, cleaned and trimmed 150 g (5oz) jamón Ibérico, cubed 750 ml (25 fl oz/3 cups) Oloroso sherry 1 carrot, chopped 1 onion, finely sliced 2 garlic cloves, unpeeled, bashed 1 bay leaf 2 sprigs of rosemary, finely chopped 3 black peppercorns sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 2–3 tablespoons olive oil, for frying 300 ml (10 fl oz/1¼ cups) chicken stock To serve crusty bread

30

Place the pork cheeks and jamón Ibérico in a glass or ceramic dish. Pour over the sherry, add the carrot, onion, garlic, bay leaf and peppercorns. Cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for at least 8 hours, preferably overnight. Drain and reserve the marinade liquid and aromatics from the vegetables, jamón and pork cheeks. Pat the meat dry with kitchen paper and season well. Pour the oil into a heavy-based, lidded saucepan or casserole dish. Fry the pork cheeks on all sides over a medium-high heat until well browned and caramelised, about 1-2 minutes on each side.Remove the meat and set aside. Add the jamón Ibérico and fry for a couple of minutes until just starting to crisp.

Remove and set aside. Reduce the heat to medium, add the veg to the saucepan and cook for 10 minutes until softened, adding more oil if necessary. Place the pork back into the saucepan with the stock and the reserved marinade liquid. Bring to a boil, then turn down to a simmer. Cover and cook for 2 hours, until the cheeks are tender. Remove the lid and place the pork cheeks onto a plate or chopping board, then cook the liquor for a further 30 minutes to reduce to a coating consistency. Once reduced, check the seasoning and adjust if necessary. Return the meat to the sauce to heat through and serve with chunks of bread.

FIDEOS CON CABALLA working to live and give Opening Times: Monday-Friday 8.30am - 5pm Saturday 10am - 4pm

Visit our Café This is a very popular recipe from Cádiz and San Fernando, and was traditionally eaten by fisherman. Using fish bones to make the stock, this isn’t a complicated dish, but it’s packed with flavour. The acidity and the sweetness from the tomatoes, onions and garlic are great levellers for the oily mackerel. INGREDIENTS Serves 4 people sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 bay leaves 4 mackerel fillets, cleaned and pin-boned, head and tail reserved

Fill a saucepan or shallow casserole dish with water and add a pinch of salt and the bay leaves. Add the mackerel head and tail and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Strain the stock into a jug and discard the bay leaves, head and tail. Pour a little olive oil into a frying pan over a medium heat and cook the onions and tomatoes in the wine for 10 minutes, or until softened. Add the garlic and fry for a further 1 minute.

for HOMEMADE SOUPS, SNACKS and DELICIOUS CAKES

200g (7oz) fideos (short vermicelli pasta) olive oil, for frying 1 large onion, finely chopped 3 ripe tomatoes, peeled and finely chopped 100 ml (3½ fl oz/scant ½ cup) white wine 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped

Ladle in the mackerel stock, bring to a boil and add the fideos. Cook for 4 minutes, or until the pasta is al dente. Season the mackerel fillets with a little salt.Pour a little olive oil into a frying pan over a medium heat and sear the fish, skin-side down, for 2–3 minutes, until golden and almost cooked, then flip over and cook the flesh side for 30 seconds. Divide the fideos between four pasta bowls and top with the crispy-skinned mackerel to serve.

PUMPKIN & CHESTNUT FRITTERS These fritters hail from northern Granada. In the past, when sugar was a valuable commodity and pretty expensive, they were a sweet treat for children on special occasions or bank holidays, which is why they are now typically served at Easter. Pumpkin might sound unusual in a dessert, but it was an abundant and versatile vegetable and therefore widely used. INGREDIENTS Makes 14 large patties or 30 mini patties

In a large mixing bowl, beat the pumpkin purée with the flours, sugar, cinnamon, salt, baking powder, milk and eggs until smooth.

1 × 425 g (15 oz) tin pumpkin purée 200 g (7 oz/1¾ cups) plain (all-purpose) flour 50 g (2 oz/1⁄3 cup) chestnut flour 100 g (3½ oz/½ cup) caster (superfine) sugar, plus extra for dusting 1½ teaspoons cinnamon, plus extra for dusting ¼ teaspoon sea salt 1 teaspoon baking powder 80 ml (2 fl oz/¼ cup) whole (full-fat) milk 3 large free-range eggs olive oil, for frying

Pour 2–3 cm (¾–1 in) olive oil into a deep frying pan over a medium heat until shimmering. Drop in tablespoonfuls of the mixture to make fourteen 8 cm (3¼ in) or thirty 6 cm (2¼ in) diameter patties. Fry for 2–3 minutes on each side until deep golden, then lift onto kitchen paper to drain. Allow to cool slightly. Mix a spoonful each of cinnamon and sugar in a wide, shallow bowl. Dust the fritters in the sugar and serve.

CHICKPEA & SPINACH STEW

Before and during Easter, Catholic people don’t eat meat on Fridays, so this vegetarian stew, traditionally eaten during this period, has a long history, with distinct nods to the Moorish culture that predated Catholicism. According to some historians, this religious prohibition was merely a way for the church to control the consumption of an essential product by the masses, as meat was still on the table for the rich. Regardless, this stew is warming, filling, and wonderful to eat at any time of the year. Pour a little oil into a frying pan over a medium heat and fry the stale bread chunks for 3–4 minutes, until lightly browned.

Add the bread and almond paste and bring to the boil, then simmer for a few minutes to thicken before adding the spinach and letting it wilt.

Add the almonds and spices and toast for 1 minute, then tip into a food processor and whizz with a splash of water to form a paste. Heat a little more oil in the pan and gently cook the onion for 10 minutes, until softened. Add the garlic and tomatoes and season well. Bubble for 20 minutes, then add the chickpeas along with their liquid from the jar.

Check the seasoning and keep warm. Heat the grill to medium-high. Drizzle the bread with oil and toast on one side, then flip over and lightly toast the other side. Top with the cheese and return to the grill to melt. Spoon the stew into individual bowls and serve with the cheese toasts and a drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil.

LEGAL | 50 PLUS MAGAZINE

INFORMATION ON LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY (LPA) Becoming physically or mentally incapable of looking after your own affairs is a realistic issue for people of all ages. A Lasting Power of Attorney is a document that you can put in place to be used during your lifetime which enables you to appoint one or more person you know and trust to act as your Attorney(s) to take control of, or assist you with, your financial or personal welfare decisions. This is useful where you are unable to manage your own affairs, whether temporarily or permanently, due to illness, physical impairment or mental incapacity. It allows your Attorneys to make decisions on your behalf, including if in the future you were to lack mental capacity to make decisions for yourself.

36

There are two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney, one for financial affairs and the other for health and welfare decisions. You cannot combine the two documents. You can choose to put in place one or both documents. A Lasting Power of Attorney for Health and Welfare gives your Attorney the authority to make decisions with regard to issues such as life sustaining treatment or the decision to accept or decline particular medical treatments. A Lasting Power of Attorney for Health and Welfare can only be used when you lack the mental capacity to make decisions for yourself. A Lasting Power of Attorney for Property and Affairs allows your Attorneys to decide

how your financial affairs are managed. The Lasting Power of Attorney will allow the people you choose to deal with your finances, pay your bills, make decisions about matters such as opening, closing and managing bank/building society accounts, claiming, receiving and using your benefits, pensions and allowances and even assist in selling your house if required. A Lasting Power of Attorney for Property and Affairs can be used both while you have mental capacity and if you were to lose mental capacity in the future. To make a Lasting Power of Attorney you need to decide who to appoint as your Attorneys to act on your behalf. You can choose members of your family, friends or a professional person such as a solicitor or accountant or indeed a combination of the two. However, professional Attorneys are likely to charge for their services. Your Attorneys should be people who have sufficient skills to manage your financial affairs. If you are appointing two or more Attorneys, you can authorise them to act either jointly (meaning they must both act together

and cannot act individually); jointly and severally (meaning they can act together or individually) or jointly in some matters and jointly and severally in other matters. Your Attorneys cannot use the Lasting Power of Attorney until it has been registered with the Office of the Public Guardian, who will make sure your Attorneys are aware of their duty to act in your best interests. The Office of the Public Guardian recommends that you name at least one person to be notified of the registration of your Lasting Power of Attorney. If the people you notify have concerns regarding the Lasting Power of Attorney they can raise them with the Office of the Public Guardian. This is a safeguard for you so the people you choose to be notified need to know you well enough to be able to raise concerns if appropriate. The people notified can be family or friends, neighbours or health or social care workers that know you well. Your attorneys cannot do whatever they like, they must follow certain guidelines. These include the following:

before proceeding to ensure that it is appropriate for you.

you! Remember that the colours you see on screen, may not be accurate to what arrives in the post – if it’s wrong, send it back! Buy smart: a bargain is only a bargain if you actually wear it. Many people make the common mistake of buying an item just because it is on ‘sale’. Don’t buy on impulse. Never buy anything in the sale you wouldn’t pay full price for! Similarly buying the season’s latest fashion could be a waste of money if it doesn’t suit you! There is nothing wrong with being interested in the latest trends but only if they suit your shape, colour and clothing personality.

SECRETS TO SUCCESSFUL SHOPPING

M

ost major shopping mistakes come from buying outfits. That’s how clothes are displayed in the shop so that’s what we think we should buy, but that way we end up with loads of clothes and only ever have a few outfits. Buy individual items that are the perfect colour and style for you and they will all work together to build an amazing wardrobe that really works for you and your lifestyle’

40

Always bear in mind if a new piece you are considering buying needs dry cleaning or hand washing. Does it fit with your lifestyle? Will you wear it enough times? A Capsule Wardrobe is a timeless clothing collection which you can use to make unlimited combinations to suit any occasion and stops those moments of panic about what to wear! Before you decide to keep or buy any garment, think does this make me look and feel fabulous? Does it flatter my shape and colouring? Does it work with my lifestyle – will I actually wear it? Is the price acceptable?

Before you go shopping be ruthless! Keep garments only if you feel good wearing them and remove those that you never wear, especially ones you haven’t worn for over a year, or that you have several similar and cheap versions of. Your clothes should accentuate you and your personality, not cover you up. By reviewing your wardrobe and removing rogue garments you can identify what is required preshopping. When shopping online always choose by colour, size, style and the detail. Read the reviews, be clear on the return policy, check the size chart and look at the detailed photos. Vitally always edit your basket and only buy what you need, and what will fit and suit

Be colour confident by knowing what colours truly suit you. Learn which colours brighten your eyes, make your skin look radiant and create a glowing, healthy and confident you. These may not be the colours that you have been wearing for the last 10 years! You will be amazed at how many compliments you get when you wear the right colours!

Make your clothes work hard for you by investing in some timeless pieces that will last for years, such as coats, handbags and shoes. Choose some accessories that will transform an outfit. Be aware of what accessories really suit you. Is gold better for you than silver? Chunky bracelets or dainty bracelets? Big or small earrings?

Many people buy the wrong size. Buy for the size that you are now and resist the urge to buy for the shape you think or hope you might be in the future! If you don’t like the number on the size label – cut it out!

IS IT TIME TO DOWNSIZE YOUR HOME?

F

OR many people, there is a time in their lives when they survey their previously much-loved home and decided that they need to downsize. It may be because this was a family home and the children are now grown-up with homes of their own or because your current home is too expensive or just doesn’t fit your needs anymore. Health and financial necessities often play a part in these considerations but, whatever the reasons for looking at a smaller property, the good news is that there are plenty of options available today. RETIRED HOUSING is one choice, usually aimed at people over 55 or 60. You have a tenancy granted for a long period of time and the leaseholder usually pays a large amount upfront and a smaller

amount of “ground rent” to the landlord each year. So it’s important to understand what is charged initially and whether and how often this increases before making any financial commitment. Services are provided in retirement housing. These vary and are set out in the lease but usually include cleaning and general upkeep of communal areas and grounds’ repairs and maintenance. You are normally responsible for maintaining and repairing the inside of your own property. This type of housing offers independent living but with the company of others easily accessible. At Housing 21, for example, which operates in nearly 200 local authority areas and manages around 20,000 Retirement and Extra Care Living properties there are care packages tailored to suit individual needs.

A dedicated Housing and Care or Housing Manager is on-site with a 24/7 care team. There is an impressive range of communal facilities and pets are very welcome. PARK HOMES provide another excellent way of being independent but part of a community. They are cleverly-designed to fit everything you need into a smaller living area - so could be suitable if you want a home that’s easy to manage - and they are all on one level. You will own a park home but pay rent to the site owner for your pitch and be liable for council tax. It’s worth considering before you choose whether the site has a residential licence, so you can live there all year round. Look, too, at the energy supply arrangements, age restrictions and whether they allow pets, if there is an active residents’ association and whether the site manager lives on-site.

Park homes are often situated in picturesque areas so offer a better quality of daily living. It’s usually available to those aged 55 and over and some common features include help from a scheme manager (warden) or support staff and 24-hour emergency help through an alarm system. There is sheltered housing to rent or buy and most is provided by local councils and housing associations. In most areas, the councl runs a waiting list of people looking for sheltered housing and many housing associations fill all their sheltered properties this way. A small amount of sheltered housing is available to rent privately. There may still be a minimum age threshold but you may not have to meet any other criteria. Waiting lists are likely to be shorter although rents may be higher. ASSISTED LIVING and EXTRA-CARE HOUSING is a type of “housing with

It means you keep your independence while you’re assisted with tasks like washing, dressing, going to the toilet and taking medication. You live in a self-contained flat with your own front door but staff are usually available 24 hours a day to provide personal care and support services which are tailored to your needs. Common features include a scheme manager or warden or a team of support staff and an alarm system. Social activities may be arranged and there may be the opportunity to buy or rent privately. LIGHT AND SPACE WHATEVER THE WEATHER

T

HE brighter days of Summer offer a chance to celebrate the best that Nature offers throughout our homes.

The same applies to FRENCH WINDOWS which can quickly open up a room but allow you to keep those rooms cosy during chillier months.

And whether you’ve got a gorgeous garden or a perfect patch for a little sunbathing, there are plenty of ideas that can soon bring the outdoors inside to enjoy fresh air, light and space - whatever the weather.

Take a good look at your WINDOWS, too. Do they seem old-fashioned and

The same applies to ORANGERIES and CONSERVATORIES. These are rather bigger projects but not only modernise and add welcome light and air to homes but also create valuable extra space. They may make the back of a house, for example, where you have available but redundant land into a contemporary addition that can transform daily living. By creating a PATIO immediately outside your home, you offer another useful living space for whatever you want to do outdoors. This is ideal for eating or entertaining al fresco or just sitting quietly reading a book when you want five minutes in the sunshine. Creating PERGOLAS, GAZEBOS and ARBOURS also offer unusual areas in your garden to wander through or a quiet place to sit away from the house.

This is the time of year when we just want to throw open our doors and windows and let the sun shine in. So why not do just that? BIFOLD DOORS are a brilliant addition to any home and can help everyone really make the most of garden greenery. They make a small kitchen seem much larger, pushing light through the house, and can create a wonderful entertaining area for those balmy Summer evenings when you have friends round for a barbecue and a few drinks.

Treat it with stain or preservation products initially to protect it from sunlight, water damage and mould and liven it up with large POTS and PLANTERS. Hanging baskets can also enhance this lovely sunny spot and the proximity to growing things can add to that image of bringing the outside inside. A patio is also a natural route into your garden. And if you want to create the illusion of more garden, even if you haven’t got much land, PATHS can give this clever impression. A winding path creates a fluid design that leads the eye onwards and you can also make a few smaller seating areas dotted around your garden which add to the idea of size. DECKING or paving slabs can make an equally useful patio but you might want to consider the ease of maintaining this area

and how it fits in with the overall look of your garden.

Of course, if you’re after a separate place completely away from your property, GARDEN STUDIOS are especially popular currently. The rise in people working from home has fuelled this interesting trend but this can equally be a gym or hobby area – or just somewhere to get away on your own. There are garden studios in all shapes and sizes these days, offering a wealth of choice depending on your needs and your budget. Nothing makes you feel relaxed, though, like the sound of running water so installing a WATER FEATURE, POND or FOUNTAIN can add a calming and attractive element to your garden. This can be as big or as small as you want it to be. Garden centres usually offer a wide choice, for example. If you’re thinking bigger and fancy your own SWIMMING POOL, this an ideal way towards a healthier lifestyle and hours of fun for youngsters. It can be installed with its own cover to keep out leaves during Autumn and Winter or even its own purpose-built “home” which doesn’t bother about the British weather. The British Swimming Pool Federation offers plenty of ideas and advice on contractors on its website www.bspf. org.uk

BEAUTIFUL BLINDS DESIGNED FOR YOUR HOME

All our blinds are made to measure here in the UK and installed by highly experienced installers. We can offer a solution for all shading and privacy issues including motorised blinds and tracks, external blinds, window films and Plantation shutters. We have no false discounts or silly offers just good products and straight forward honest customer service.

HOT TUBS have also become very popular in the UK in recent years – to be used all year round. Go to the British and Irish Spa Hot Tub Association (BISHTA) at www.bishta.co.uk for ideas, advice and to download a useful sheet with information on installation, maintenance and plenty more. Investing in some new GARDEN FURNITURE can really brighten up your whole outdoor experience. Opt for flexible and hard-wearing – although stylish – items. These days, garden furniture has really come of age with handsome and comfortable easychairs and sofas to encourage you to lounge about for hours! A special BARBECUE area in your garden is always handy whether you’ve got a built-in barbecue or one on wheels to roll out when you need it. The beauty of having a dedicated barbecue area is that you can keep fuel, equipment and utensils in one handy place. Unfortunately, even Summer days can be a bit chilly – especially evenings – so it’s well worth considering one or two PATIO HEATERS to ensure that everyone can enjoy being outside without getting cold. Before you finalise any schemes for building in the garden, though, it’s worth planning out the actual garden itself to ensure you’re making the most of it. After all, if you want to spend plenty of time there – and “invite” plenty of the outdoors inside – it should really be the garden that you want. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) offers plenty of tips and ideas on its website https://www.rhs.org.uk including garden designs, what plants to use and even how to start a garden from scratch. They have advice on growing your own vegetables and fruits to ensure that everyone can get the most from their garden – whether it’s just admiring the view or enjoying what it produces.

We specialise in:

• Shutters • Wood • Roller • Vision • • Anti allergy blinds • Motorised • • External • Office Blinds • and much more, with the latest fabrics and colours!

RESIN DRIVEWAY PROFITS SOAR WITH NEW SHOWROOM IN YORKSHIRE

Caption: Resin Drives new Brighouse showroom also features fencing, garden rooms, garage doors and even a putting green.

ResinDrives.co.uk Ltd recently celebrated record-breaking figures over the last two months, proving not even Brexit can hold back the Yorkshire-based home improvement firm. The timing could not be better, as they opened their doors to customers with a brandnew flagship showroom in West Yorkshire, Brighouse. The showroom happens to be the biggest internal resin showroom in the UK. As well as resin driveways, it also includes their new line of outdoor products; such as state of the art garden rooms, garage doors, fencing, decking and artificial lawns. There is also a mini putting green for customers to try out their golfing ability or to keep the kids entertained while parents can peruse the many resin samples on display. “It was important to us to have an impressive flagship showroom for customers to see the quality and variety on offer for themselves. Despite being a national company, we’re proud of our Yorkshire roots so Brighouse was an ideal location for our flagship showroom. Plus, it’s just a stone’s throw away from the M62, making it easily accessible for people further afield too. We invite customers to come in at

their leisure, where they can expect a warm Yorkshire welcome, and wide range of outdoor products on display - from resin driveways to garage doors and more.”, explains Managing Director, Carwyn Richards. The showroom is their second showroom in the UK, with another based in South Wales. They also have their resin driveways on display in Express Bi-folding Doors showrooms, in Leeds and Romford. Resin Drives.co.uk Ltd have over 10 years’ experience and uses all their own installation teams to ensure consistent quality control across the board. Resin is becoming increasingly popular with more home owners than ever recognising its superior benefits over other surfacing options on the market: it’s porous, environmentally-friendly, weed adverse, slip-resistant, wheelchair-friendly and has excellent tyre traction. Aside from all the practical benefits, resin driveway gives customer’s many different aesthetic styles to add exceptional kerb appeal. With over 40 stone colours to choose from a trip to the showroom is definitely worthwhile.

The Easi Drip Micro Kit from Hozelock can water up to 15 containers (credit Hozelock)

HOLIDAY CARE FOR PLANTS IN POTS Just a few simple measures will give you peace of mind about your garden containers while you’re away from home says gardening writer Julia Heaton Container planting is a great way to bring colour to a patio, balcony, deck, windowbox or any drab corner where planting in the ground isn’t possible. Plants in pots are a moveable feast for the eye too – when you tire of a particular grouping you can shift them around for a bit of a change. But their confined growing conditions and susceptibility to drying out, also mean they need extra care and attention, especially before you pack your bags and head off for a long weekend or two weeks in the sun. Fortunately there are lots of tips, tricks and even hi-tech gardening gear that you can call into action to see them safely through. Auto irrigation systems An automatic watering system is the best way to keep your garden watered with no supervision and is cost effective when used throughout the season – saving time, effort and cutting down on water use too. Various drip systems are available for linking to outside taps or water butts and regulating watering by using a pre-set timer (prices start at around £30). Water is released

The solar powered SOL C12 kit comes with 5m of cable and 12 drippers for £79.95 (credit: Irrigatia) Solar powered versions are another effective way of regulating water delivery. Attached to a water butt or garden tap and positioned in a sunny spot, the SOL C12 system from solar specialist Irrigatia (& irrigatia.com) will water every three hours, reacting to weather conditions by watering for longer when it’s really sunny.

Use Hozelock’s Cloud Controller (RRP £134.99) to keep on top of watering via your mobile. slowly and evenly to plant roots, the delicate sprayers and nozzles are also softer than a hose or a watering can might be on young plants. If you want you can go really hi-tech with a timer linked to a smart phone app that will give you details of weather back home and allow you to create your own watering schedule.

A cheaper method would be to use a bucket of water and a strip of old towelling material to act as a wick. Find a shady area and raise the bucket off the ground on a garden chair, standing your pot beneath it. Soak the towelling in the bucket leaving one end in the water and tucking the other half-way down the inside of the pot. The towelling forms a wick – water gradually soaking along the fabric and into the compost. Using the same bucket you can repeat the process for other pots. This method is ideal for greenhouse plants as well. But remember to leave the door and window vents open if you don’t have an automatic opener. And help keep temperatures down with a good coat of shading paint on the windows. 53

Capillary matting from & garlandproducts.com is on a 2m x 60cm roll (£13.68 plus £4.95 p&p) ready to be cut to fit

Off with their heads and shady to slow down the drying-out process. It should all help to create a damp micro-climate, increasing humidity around the pots, keeping soil moist for longer. Going to ground

A watering spike attached to a plastic bottle delivers water through pre-drilled holes. (pic credit: Thompson & Morgan) Water Spikes A watering spike attached to a plastic bottle delivers water through pre-drilled holes A long weekend away is a perfect opportunity to put used plastic drinks bottles to good use. After watering the plants fill bottles with water and screw a watering spike on top – there are now lots of these readily available from garden centres and online. Turn the bottle upside down and insert into the soil where the spike will gradually release water from the holes along its length. At the same time group plants together somewhere sheltered 54

If you’re away for less than a week and have some space in a partly shaded area of the garden then you could use it to give your pots some protection. Sink them into the soil, so container lips are level with the surface, then thoroughly water them and the surrounding area well in. Moisture from the soil will help to sustain the plants, encouraging roots to grow deeper as they search it out. Adding a layer of bark or slate chippings will slow the evaporation process or you could cover your plants with shade netting material. Available from most garden centres, it can be cut to the length required. Capillary matting For houseplants place capillary matting on your kitchen draining board, allowing it to trail into a sink of water. Once it has soaked up the water arrange the pots on top, pressing them down to ensure they make good contact with the material and can draw up the moisture they need. Make sure they are well-watered beforehand and that the area isn’t in full sun. For larger groups of plants use damp matting or towelling in the bath and stand them on it.Alternatively, if you’re only going away for a short period, you should be able to get away with giving plants a thorough watering then helping them to retain moisture by adding a layer of gravel to the watering saucers they stand in.

Harvest any ripe crops and remove fading heads on bedding to prolong flowering and encourage new blooms. If you’re away for an extended period be completely ruthless and remove mature buds and flowers as well – you’ll return home to new blooms rather than plants that have run their course and run to seed. Simply use your thumb and fore-finger to pinch-out, or secateurs for tougher stems, taking the flower back to a healthy pair of leaves or a side shoot. Take the opportunity to remove any dead leaves as well – they not only look unattractive but can harbour pests like slugs and snails or even cause the spread of fungal disease. Feeding time After deadheading it’s worth applying a balanced fertiliser like Growmore. This granular feed is longer lasting than a high potassium liquid one, which is formulated to provide immediate nourishment and quick results. Instead it will break down over the following six weeks, building plants up to produce results on your return, rather than while you’re away on holiday. Welcome home Follow these steps and all should be well on your return. Then a good dousing from the garden hose and a shower with a fine rose watering can a few hours later should do the trick. Add some liquid tomato fertiliser to the water if you didn’t feed before you left. Where a pot is very dry though it’s best left to soak in a bucket of water for half an hour. Finally, keep an eye out for any pests and disease that may have taken the opportunity to set up home.

"On seeing the product, I was convinced, the brown fence looks very similar to the fence it replaced – only new!"

ARE YOU A FOLLOWER OF FENCE FASHION? DEDICATED or not, many of us are followers of fashion whether intentionally or because we see something that we like and decide to adopt it ourselves. A lot has changed since The Kinks had a top five hit about a trendy young man eager to embrace the latest trends, not least our gardens.

Gardens today are very different from the 50’s post WW2 “dig for victory”, gardens that extended into the swinging 60’s. Back then, gardens were more likely to have a veg patch, home to rows of potatoes, beans, rhubarb and blackcurrants, marked out by hedges or chain link fencing, than be geared towards leisure, privacy, or the careful design associated with modern gardens. Today’s gardens are often lower maintenance with paving, gravel, small flower beds and pots as owners spend spare time relaxing, pottering or on other hobbies. When Storm Callum sent John Pilkington’s traditional wooden garden fence across the lawn in pieces, he found himself looking at replacements, eventually deciding on ColourFence. John explained the reason behind the transition from 56

traditional to a more modern, low maintenance product.

We love our garden but are not what I would describe as ‘gardeners’. My wife potters with bedding plants and I manage the lawn and maintenance; but my real passion is taking care of our garden birds and wildlife. The storm left us comparably unscathed (there was flooding a few miles away) apart from a fence that my neighbour and I had lavished care (and paint) on over the years. In researching a replacement, a family member suggested ColourFence. At first, metal fencing sounded industrial, but I was convinced enough by the photos to get a quote. On seeing the product, I was convinced, the brown fence looks very similar to the fence it replaced – only new! The bright side is it will stay looking that way for 25 years!

ColourFence have been selling maintenance-free fencing in the UK for almost 15 years and understand

My wife potters with bedding plants and I manage the lawn and maintenance; but my real passion is taking care of our garden birds and wildlife.

that John is not alone in assuming metal fencing will look industrial. The truth is, that ColourFence often spreads down streets; people see it, love the look and the low maintenance and want it in their own garden. The distinctive colour combinations and styles that are possible without the need for time spent painting and mending, mean that you can create a look that really complements your garden and style. Despite many coats of preservative, the structure of the wooden fence in our front garden rotted pretty rapidly, and a recent autumn storm sent it off down the road, thankfully missing the neighbour’s car. However, every cloud has a silver lining, and we now couldn’t be more pleased with the ColourFence replacement which was erected a few days ago. by lan Hislop and Nick Newman Fading Hollywood action hero Jefferson Steele sees an opportunity to boost his career by accepting an offer to play King Lear at Stratford. But when he arrives in England he is horrified to find that instead of appearing with The Royal Shakespeare Company, alongside Kenneth Branagh and Dame Judi Dench, he is actually performing in a sleepy Suffolk village with an enthusiastic amateur theatre company, the Stratford Players, who are trying to save their home from property developers. Jefferson’s monstrous ego, vanity and insecurity are tested to the limit by the am-dram thespians. But as the two acting worlds collide a story worthy of the Bard himself reveals itself – with rivalry, hidden passions, family strife, and a voyage of selfdiscovery for all the characters. Bury Market has a well deserved reputation for friendly service, fantastic produce and great value. As one of our customers recently said ‘This market continues to thrive and you can see why. Great stalls with everything you could ever need at good prices, plus the superb meat and fish covered market. Friendly service and great people - definitely recommend. The hub of a great little town!’

The Manchester Food and Drink Festival is now a well established nationally acclaimed event, and 2019 will see its 22nd annual take-over of the City between 26th September and 7th October. Conceived and developed by Phil Jones in 1998, the event originated as a means of showing the rest of the nation that there was more to Manchester than meat pies and gravy! In the 21 festivals that have taken place over that time, Manchester’s dining scene has been completely transformed, with the Festival being regarded nationally as both exciting and influencial. Festival events take place in venues across the City and at the Festival Hub, where a bespoke food and drink centre is custom built. Over the years, names as diverse as Jamie Oliver, Gordon Ramsay, Fergus Henderson, Michel Roux, John Torode and even Bill Wyman have all been involved. The MFDF awards are widely regarded as the most important in the region, with this year’s awards being presented at the Gala Dinner taking place on 7th October. Clive Rushworth

Helen Collins

One of the few dedicated Choirs in the country for people living with and beyond cancer has twice the reason for celebration this week! Bolton Cancer Voices is marking both its seventh Birthday and the appointment of a new choral leader following an extensive search to secure a replacement for Clive Rushworth, who leaves after seven wonderful, melodious years with the Choir, which has gone from strength to strength under his direction. The nearly forty-strong, mixed voice Choir was established by Karen Elliott at a time when the therapeutic benefits of singing in a Choir were not widely recognised. The Choir offers an unusual form of support for those going through treatment, moving forward following completion of treatment or living with cancer as a chronic condition, and members have reported favourable effects such as improved breathing, increased energy levels, a more positive outlook and an increased sense of well-being: but it’s their unquestionable love of singing or the desire to give it a try that attracts new members to their ranks. Members are passionate about singing and rehearsals are an important part of their weekly routine, when the focus is on the music they make together plus forthcoming appearances and choral activities. From their first appearance on the steps of Bolton Town Hall in a massed Choir celebrating the launch of the Bolton 2012 Games to one of their most recent in the world renowned Royal Albert Hall, London,Clive Rushworth has guided them through some amazing choral journeys, affording members many unforgettable experiences. Clive hands over his treasured role of Musical Director to Helene Collins, who

Karen Elliott

will take up her baton on 1st July. Helene and Karen first crossed paths many years ago when they were both associated with Bolton Catholic Musical and Choral Society and were recently reconnected by a mutual acquaintance, who knew of the Choir’s search. Having been involved in amateur dramatics for a number of years, Helene’s passion had to take a back seat to her increasing work commitments but she now feels ready to step into this exciting role and is looking forward to once again sharing her love of music and singing. Karen Elliott, Founder and Chair said: ‘We are delighted to welcome Helene to the Choir and look forward to sharing many wonderful choral adventures together. Already she’s got involved and been along to a couple of our workshops. Over the coming months we’ll get to know each other, as we prepare for our popular annual ‘Jingle Bell Sing-A-Long’ concert in the Victoria Hall, Bolton; on Saturday 7th December. Clive laid strong foundations for the Choir; under his professional guidance we have grown both in technical ability and self-belief. We need to maintain this momentum and continue to inspire, challenge and develop; ensuring we’re the best we can be and that the next chapter of our story is as exciting and rewarding as these inaugural years have been. We have every confidence that Helene will deliver on this and anticipate great times ahead. We hope she will be very happy in her new role. We’d like to thank everyone who expressed an interest in the position of Musical Director and all those individuals and the media who so kindly helped publicise our search.’

You can read more about the Choir on their Facebook page. Anyone interested in joining Bolton Cancer Voices should contact Karen on 01204 595562 / 07773 164235.

Warm Friendly Caring

Looking after someone with dementia There are many positive things about caring. These include learning new skills, building on existing ones, strengthening relationships, having a sense of pride in what you are doing and supporting someone who is important to you. However, caring can also be both physically and mentally tiring. It affects every part of your life and can make you feel isolated and stressed. You may also have your own physical and mental health needs, which you and others might overlook when you are caring for someone else. Everyone will experience caring in their own way. There may be days when you feel like you can cope well, and others when you cannot. You may find that there are some aspects of caring you can manage easily, while others prove more difficult. This can change from day to day.

forms of cardio. In fact, any movement is good whether that is hoovering the house, getting off the bus early, or stretching whilst you make a cup of tea. Stress – Everyone’s bodies deal with stress differently and research suggests that some people with diabetes experience an increase in sugar levels as their body’s response to stress. Give yourself space to think, reflect and unwind. Meditation helps keeps our inner system calmer and more relaxed. Try to reduce your stress levels in whatever ways you can.

WAYS TO HELP REVERSE TYPE 2 DIABETES Mediterranean diet - Low carb Mediterranean diets which include unsaturated fats like oily fish, avocado, olive oil, and nuts like almonds and are rich in a variety of vegetables are very effective. Aim for about 50% of your plate to be brightly coloured vegetables and only 25% to be carbs. Processed and white carbohydrates such as bread and pasta should be avoided. Better choices of carbohydrates include bulgar wheat, couscous, and quinoa. We need to remove as much processed food from our diets as possible. Consume less sugar – Too much sugar causes our blood glucose levels to rise. Obesity and a high sugar intake are intrinsically linked to the development of Type 2 diabetes. UK obesity figures are alarming with 61% of adults being overweight or obese and 1 in 5 children are overweight by the age of 11. Avoid snacking and drink water – We often eat excess sugar, salt, carbs and empty calories through bad snacking. Try to work out if you are really hungry or eating for another reason like you are tired or need a reward. If you do need a snack, try to eat healthy snacks like celery or a handful of nuts.

68

Emotional eating – Did you know hunger is only one of up to thirty reasons why we eat. Some of the many other reasons we eat include stress, fatigue, boredom, or a need for reward or because of feelings of failure. Focusing on the reasons we overeat can be the stepping stone to implementing the journey to change. Very low-calorie diets – Although this diet may be the hardest to sustain, it has been shown to be effective at reversing Type 2 diabetes. Through weight loss, fat is removed from essential organs and cells which helps insulin function better. Sticking to around 800kcal per day has been shown to have drastic effects on weight reduction and in turn blood glucose control. However, this diet is definitely not for everyone and can cause other health implications so consult your GP if you intend to try this diet. Exercise – Movement burns off the extra sugar in our blood stream. Aerobic exercise helps burn calories away and can really help push back on insulin resistance putting diabetes into remission. Aim for 30 mins of exercise or movement at least five times per week. Involve the family to motivate you and make it a routine. Brisk walking, swimming, running, or cycling are all great

Overnight fasting – Fung’s study on overnight fasting showed that the participants who had to take regular doses of insulin daily were able to stop self-medicating just 18 days after engaging in intermittent fasting. Although research in this field is still in its infancy, this may well be a method to help reverse the effects of diabetes. Try not to eat for 12 hours in a row. Sleep – Getting at least eight hours of shuteye a night may to help prevent the risk factors associated with diabetes. Sleep deprivation influences insulin levels causing less of it to be released into the body after having eaten. Therefore, sleeping properly will help to ensure a sufficient amount of insulin is being secreted into the blood stream to help reverse diabetic symptoms. Vitamin D – Several studies have further found that low levels of vitamin D may also contribute to insulin resistance so make sure you are getting enough daily sunlight or alternatively you can purchase Vit D supplements over the counter.

THE IMPORTANCE OF GUT HEALTH The gut - that long windy tube that is housed within your abdominal walls, runs a good nine metres (30 feet) and harbours tens of trillions of gut microbiota. The gut is a hot house for a huge network of highly functioning cells and bacteria which work symbiotically to help our bodies digest food, produce particular vitamins, send our brain important messages and keep our immune systems and general health in check. Each individual’s composition of the gut microbiota is unique and can weigh up to two kg! We now know that a healthy and balanced gut is absolutely key to ensuring good health and protection against many

diseases, so here are some tips to help you look after your gut as well as possible:Fermented foods – Possibly not everyone’s first choice, but these foods are rich in good, healthy bacteria. Natural live yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut and miso all contain bacteria which improve mineral absorption within the gut, thus boosting its overall health. For instance, yoghurt contains Lactobacilli bacteria, which is believed to inhibit the development of inflammatory conditions such as IBS, joint pains and chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes. Some studies have even suggested that eating moderate daily amounts of yoghurt can reduce lactose intolerance by altering gut flora. Fruit and veg – You may be eating 5 to preferably10 portions of fruit and veg a day, but are you eating a broad enough range? Eating a rainbow of vegetables, and to a lesser extent fruit, will mean delicious, healthy and high fibre meals that will restore and maintain harmony within your gut’s ecosystem and will help balance sugar levels out and prevent elevated bad cholesterol. Remember diversity is as important as volume. Legumes - Pulses, lentils and the like are a rich source of fibre, and vitamins such as magnesium, folate and iron. They are also a great supplier of bacteria such as Bifidobacteria, a disease fighter. Polyphenols – Surprisingly, some foods which have often been deemed ‘unhealthy’ can in fact benefit our guts. Foods such as dark chocolate and drinks like tea, coffee and red wine all include a group of flavonoids called polyphenols which provide gut bacteria with a vital energy source. This isn’t a green light to consume large volumes of any of them though! Moderation is still key. Wholegrains – Unrefined carbohydrates such as quinoa, bulgar wheat and rye contain high fibre content which helps maintain gut health and the growth of good bacteria such as Bifidobacteria, Lactobacilli and Bacteroidetes, which in turn aid weight management by creating a sense of fullness, reducing inflammation and risk of heart disease. Avoid sugar –The food that we eat can be broken down to feed either the good or the bad bacteria. Sugar feeds the bad bacteria

PLANT BASED SOURCES OF OMEGA 3-ACIDS

which when eaten excessively can cause an imbalance within the gut which are likely to create health problems. Avoid fried and processed foods – These foods also break down to feed the bad gut bacteria and reduces the variety of species of good bacteria within the gut which puts a decline on your overall health. Antioxidants – Roughage such as jerusalem artichokes, jicama and flaxseed can be tremendous for your gut as they are rich in fibre and antioxidants and fill your gut with lots of good bacteria, helping to ease the digestive process. Garlic is known to boost the creation of good gut microbes and recent research suggests that garlic might also help to prevent some gastrointestinal diseases. Lack of sleep – Sleep allows your gut to eliminate toxins which have accumulated throughout the day, returning inflammatory markers to normal levels and rejuvenating the gut for the next day’s nutritional onslaught. Recent research suggests that fragmented sleep may trigger gut inflammation, leading to disruption of the metabolism whilst better quality sleep helps to reduce the risk of weight gain and diabetes and improves your general metabolic health. Avoid the overuse of antibiotics – Antibiotics are indeed useful and often necessary when treating infections and other illnesses, however, whilst antibiotics attempt

to kill off the infection, they also often kill off the friendly gut bacteria needed within the body. Avoid the overuse of antibiotics to keep your gut balanced and happy. Probiotics and prebiotics – Prebiotics such as those found in garlic, onions, leeks, asparagus and artichoke, apples, and bananas are forms of important dietary fibre that acts as a fertiliser for the good bacteria in your gut. Probiotics are live bacteria that can be found in yogurt and other fermented foods. The more natural prebiotic food that probiotic bacteria have to eat, the more efficiently these live bacteria work and the healthier your gut will be. Probiotics can have health benefits after a period of illness, particularly after using antibiotics and some other medications which alter gut bacteria. However, taking probiotic supplements on a daily basis may cause some minor health problems so talk to your GP first. Fasting - Late night snacking and drinking prevents your gut from regenerating, contributing to bloating, gas, and food intolerance, whilst fasting gives your gut a break and kills unwanted bad gut bacteria and helps natural regeneration needed for healing digestive problems such as inflammatory bowel diseases and leaky gut. Overall a primarily plant-based diet, rich in pulses, legumes and whole grains will provide our gut with the perfect playground to help protect the rest of our bodies from chronic disease, cancers and unwanted inflammation. 69

Transforming Smiles As an implant centre of excellence, Douglas Lee Dental Associates recently carried out its 150th ‘Fast and Fixed’ same- day implant procedure, a technique that has transformed the smiles, and the lives, of many patients...

BEFORE

Leading the way in UK implant technology is Lancashire-based Douglas Lee, who was one of the first dentists in the country to adopt the highly successful pioneering ‘Fast and Fixed’ technique. The ‘Fast and Fixed’ implant procedure has made Douglas Lee Dental Associates a flagship practice and teaching surgery for the Germanpioneered technique, Testament to their skills, the team at Douglas Lee Dental were the first in the UK to carry out a full set of upper and lower jaw implants in the same day.

THE TEAM WERE ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL, THEY ARE SO ATTENTIVE AND IT’S A VERY CARING PRACTICE

After reading about the procedure, sales consultant Jacqueline Shonn called Douglas Lee Dental and arranged for a consultation: “I am 55 but I am not an old 55 and I had to wear dentures on either side of my lower teeth, which I hated with a vengeance! They made me feel old!

Having experience in many aspects of dentistry and now a respected expert in implants, Dougie comments: “No-one wants to lose their teeth but sometimes, despite everyone’s best efforts, teeth fail and

we previously had to resort to prosthetics like removable dentures. Dental implants are a wonderful improvement on these.” Jackie had lost a number of her teeth and with several failing teeth still in place, she also needed work on her gums. Sedated, Jackie was then painlessly fitted with her lower implants. During their years of experience, the team at Douglas Lee Dental Associates have refined the ‘Fast and Fixed’ procedure and have state-of-the-art in-house technology at their fingertips. In addition to the Helbo laser

Sedation ensures that no pain is felt and the patient remains relaxed throughout the experience. “To be honest before the procedure I felt quite wary but, it was amazing, I felt no pain or discomfort. I also had four teeth removed and it was still better than going to the dentist for a filling!” says Jackie.

I HAD BEEN THINKING ABOUT IMPLANTS FOR A WHILE AND AFTER TALKING TO DOUGIE I DECIDED I DEFINITELY WANTED TO GO AHEAD

Preparation is the key to the success and the team of dental nurses, dental technicians, cosmetic dentist Usman Riaz and Dougie himself, all play their part on the day. ‘’No two smiles are the same, so there is no ‘one-size-fits all’ when it comes to this level of cosmetic dentistry, ’’ says Usman. “Carrying out our 150th procedure was quite a milestone for us and like all the

other patients, the implants have completely changed Jackie’s smile,” adds Usman. “Implants can transform people – they gain confidence and restore self-esteem. It may sound a cliché but this procedure really does change their lives.”

Consultation to find out more about these new innovations in denture design and manufacture? DENTURES NEED REGULAR SERVICING Dentures are in constant use almost 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They are also in a pretty hostile environment in the mouth, being attacked by strong acid, bacteria, hot, cold and spicy food. Denture material absorbs liquids and food odour. Daily cleaning is essential as well as professional ultrasonic cleaning in a dental laboratory at least once a year. Due to constant bone resorbtion dentures will become loose sooner or later. Loose dentures will increase damage to the gums and bone structure, and increase the risk of breakage. Have them re-lined as soon as possible to get a good fit. It only takes a day or two. Have your dentures inspected by a Clinical Dental Technician at least every two years, or more frequently if necessary. YOUR DENTURES NEED ATTENTION 1. When they become loose. 2. When teeth or denture base discolours. 3. When tooth surfaces become flat. 4. When denture base does not fit around natural teeth (in partial dentures). 5. When you develop deep lines around your mouth. 6. When your chin sticks out, and the corners of your lips are constantly wet, developing sores. 7. When you stop smiling and feel embarrassed. MY DENTURES HAVE BECOME LOOSE! This is easily remedied by a procedure know as Re-lining. A new layer of Denture base is added to your existing Denture, improving the fit and restoring confidence.

DENTURES ON IMPLANTS This type of Denture is constructed in conjunction with the Dental Implant Surgeon. This is a very good procedure when the patient has limited control and retention of their Dentures. The finished Dentures ‘click’ into position offering the ultimate in Denture Retention. SHOULD I HAVE A SPARE SET OF DENTURES MADE? Yes, it is very important to have a spare set of dentures for emergencies in case of breakage. CONSTRUCTING A GOOD SET OF DENTURES Constructing a functional and aesthetically pleasing set of dentures is the most difficult task in dentistry. We are not only replacing lost teeth, but also lost tissue matter and bone. In other words, we have to re-create your facial features as they were before the loss of your natural teeth. In most cases we do not know what your teeth looked like, what size they were or what position they were in originally. We have a few indications but mostly we have to rely on our visual and artistic judgement. At the same time we have to use our technical expertise in order to make the denture stable and functional. Denture construction is more art than science. Bolton Denture Centre can offer all aspects of denture care including; Free Consultations Denture cleaning and polishing service l Repair of broken or cracked dentures l Relining existing dentures to improve fit l New full dentures l New partial dentures (following treatment plan from dentist) * l Sports mouth guards *Dentist treatment plan can be arranged. l l

BEATING JET LEG AS BEST YOU CAN Unfortunately for business travellers and holiday makers alike, there is no universal trick to prevent jet lag as a result of long-haul travel. Jet lag influences each of us differently so its best you find out what works for you but here are our top tips to help with jet leg and hopefully make your long-haul trip that little bit more enjoyable!

1. SELECTIVE FOOD Certain foods are known to be better for you than others when it comes to avoiding jet lag. If you’re looking to sleep on a flight in order to adjust to the new time zone, it is recommended by some to eat carbdense foods as you produce more of the sleep-inducing neurotransmitter serotonin. Proteins on the other hand are more likely to increase your sense of alertness and therefore encourage your body to stay awake so eat more proteins if you are trying to stay up upon arrival! 2. … AND LIQUIDS Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks. Although you might find a G&T helps you drift off and a coffee helps to keep you up, their effects are generally short-term and can further mess up your internal clock. The air inside airplanes is also dry, which can bring on migraines and dry out your skin so 76

replace wine with water to keep your body well hydrated. 3. TEMPERATURE + LIGHTING Adjusting your body temperature and lighting can hugely influence your body’s ability to sleep. Bring a good eye mask and ear plugs with you to reduce distractions. Darkness helps the melatonin in your body tell your brain it is time to sleep. Also make sure your room is cool as this will lower your body temperature, making it easier to fall sleep. Get out and about if you need to be staying awake until later.

some down-time amid the exploring to allow your body to adjust to the new time zone so you have plenty of energy and be raring to go when you reach your next destination! 6. MELATONIN Melatonin supplements are known to help prevent jet lag but is a prescription only medicine and is not fully licensed in the UK, although it is available over-the-counter in many other countries. Some foods naturally contain melatonin and are therefore good to have at an evening meal, such as bananas, oats, sweetcorn, rice, ginger and tomatoes. Avoid blue light from electronics, darken your room and quieten things down before bedtime to help the melatonin that you natural produce do its job to enable sleep.

4. ACCLIMATE If you are very keen to avoid jetlag, try acclimating before you set off by slightly altering your meal and bed times. The same can be done in reverse when you come home. 5. PLAN A STOP OVER If your wallet can stretch that far and you have enough time, plan a stopover halfway to your final destination to help you acclimatize. Make sure you allow yourself
