Dear Friends ...Welcome aboard your holiday starts here Welcome to Memory Lane’s tours for 2014. Whether you are new to Memory Lane or one of those highly valued customers who keep coming back to us, I do hope you’ll like what you read. A surprising amount of it is based on tour feed-back, so please keep it coming. I do read every word of it personally you know, and I do take notice! For example, many of you have told me how much you like the flexibility in our tours. When you see the excursions included on many of our tours, you won’t see a date attached to them. This is so your driver can take account of local conditions, such as weather, markets or festivals and plan a final itinerary which takes best advantage of all opportunities. Sometimes it’s best not to do things by the book, even if it’s just a matter of changing the order of the pages! Obviously, some tours do require more detailed planning. With these, you’ll see the heading ‘your holiday itinerary’ instead of ‘excursions included’ in the pages that follow. On the other hand, when it comes to customer care, I’m really proud that we do things by the book, often going beyond clients’ expectations and adding pages of our own! Have a look at details of our home pickup services, for instance. Remember that all our tours are operated by highly professional drivers (I’m proud to be one myself) who will go the extra mile to look after you. On diner tours, you will enjoy the company and services of a second crew-member, the hostess, often someone you know! Sometimes we even take a local specialist guide on board as well. So enjoy your reading, book with confidence and, most importantly, have a great trip. I look forward to seeing you during what promises to be another bumper season.

A few things to keep in mind ... l

DINER EXECUTIVE TOURS

Our diner executive coaches are full-sized vehicles but with fewer seats than usual. The space saved is taken up by a kitchen and servery. Here the hostess prepares freshly made light lunches, with copious quantities of tea or coffee. She serves you at your seat. All you have to do is enjoy the experience. Oh yes, and the hostess does the washing-up, too. You see, there are no plastic cups in our diners, just the real thing like you’d want for your guests at home! Obviously all this takes time. On the first and final days we stop, often off the motorway, for you to provide your own lunch. Even on these days, however, we’ll serve you complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits at your seat at some of our stops en route. l

SPECIAL MEAL ARRANGEMENTS

You’ll see the letters SMA against a few tours, rather than the more usual FB (full board) or HB (half board). “Special Meal Arrangements” means extra meals or snacks when in the hotel but not, for example, during coach journeys. l

EXECUTIVE AND CONTINENTAL TOURS

You’ll have opportunities to buy really good value hot and cold drinks on board. In the UK, lunch stops will often be in reasonably priced outlets away from the motorways. On the continent we do make more use of motorway service areas, but they are generally quite reasonably priced by the standards in the country concerned. l

you like the idea of taking one of our advertised tours and don’t need too many pick-up points. Or just tell us roughly where you’d like to go, and for how long, and we’ll come up with some mouth-watering ideas. Or give us more precise details of your plans and we’ll just provide the transport. However you approach it, tell us what you want us to do and watch us measure up to expectations. None of our group leaders are disappointed by our response - and there’s no charge for asking! l

OUR HOME PICK UP SERVICE

I know how much you like the peace of mind our door-to-door service gives you. So, you can look forward to being collected by a friendly driver, usually in a comfortable minibus (we’ve just had to increase the fleet because you like this part so much!) and be taken the often short distance to and from your luxury coach. The driver will even load your luggage for you. By the way, just compare the way we do this with those who collect passengers in a full size shuttle coach, adding several needless hours to passengers’ journeys as they travel huge distances the length and breadth of the country, just to collect a large and viable load. Those of you who live beyond our home pick-up service area need not worry. We can usually offer you the same service for a remarkably small additional cost. For overseas visitors we can offer reasonably priced overnight accommodation. We can also arrange for a small number of customers cars to be parked at our depot for those who wish, but cars are parked at your own risk. l

LUGGAGE, WALKING AIDS AND SCOOTERS

We’d be really grateful if you could manage with ONE CASE each! Even if you are travelling as a couple, we’d still be pleased if you could keep this request in mind: two small cases are always better than one big one. This is partly for the benefit of those of us who make all the luggage fit into the nooks and crannies of coach holds and minibus luggage compartments. But it’s also for you. You see, if your case weighs more than 20kg, hotels are within their rights to refuse porterage. Please be sure to tell us if you’re planning to bring a wheel-chair or other mobility device. We are happy to transport your wheelchair, but due to the limited luggage space it is important that you arrange this when making your reservation. We will carry small, lightweight scooters weighing approximately 21kgs. Please be aware that our drivers are not responsible for any damage to your machine when manoeuvring to and from the coach. Please check that your chosen hotel allows wheelchairs. l

HOTEL GRADING

We use our own star rating scheme, based on our many years of experience. In practice, it correlates quite closely with that of the motoring organisations. l

AND FINALLY

Clearly, all holidays are subject to enforced change in the event of adverse weather conditions. We know you’ll understand if the itinerary has to be modified. We’ll do our best if the weather doesn’t, and so will our partners. Thanks for your understanding. Enjoy your holiday!

GROUPS

All our prices offer great value. However, we can often make them even more tempting for parties of 20 or more travelling together. Perhaps

All excursions are pick up and set down on main roads close to your home as practical within our normal area. All pick ups and drop offs are normally completed within 1 hour subject to traffic conditions. Some pick ups are by a feeder vehicle, and where the route allows passengers will be first on first off basis. The base time is at Golborne, so some times will be before this time and some will be after depending on the destination. We always advise pick up time times by phone the day before the excursion. It has a lively and bustling town centre with broad streets and fascinating Victorian verandas which add to the distinct architectural style.

Torquay ...

Cumbria ...

Torquay is the stylish resort at the heart of the English Riviera with a real continental atmosphere. The harbour town is the birthplace of Dame Agatha Christie and the beauty of the area is captured in many of her famous novels. In keeping with its name, the English Riviera enjoys a mild climate with sandy beaches and coves around every corner.

Cumbria - The eastern part of the county is moorland with some great walks and is close to the border with Northumbria. To the north of both counties is Hadrian’s Wall built by The Roman Emperor Hadrian. The whole area is very scenic and a pleasure to drive through.

Your Holiday Itinerary Day 1: 5 & 8 DAY TOUR- We travel south via the motorway network making suitable stops along the way. For lunch we normally leave the motorway to use a friendly garden centre, arriving at the hotel around 3.45pm. Day 2: 5 & 8 DAY TOUR- Our day out takes us first to Exeter then Dawlish and then on to the historic port of Teignmouth with its Canadian connections. Afterwards we follow the winding coast road back to Torquay. Day 3: 5 & 8 DAY TOUR- We drive through Paignton to Totnes then follow the route of the River Dart to Dartmouth. A pretty town full of naval history where part of The Onedin Line was filmed in the cobbled streets of Bayards Cove. You also have time for a sail on the River Dart before we cross the river for our journey back to the Kistor. Day 4: 8 DAY TOUR - We head to Newton Abbott for our first stop, today it’s market day so the town is busy, then after lunch we travel on to Dartmoor and visit Widecombe in the Moor with its lovely church, always been known as the cathedral in the Moor. Day 4: 5 DAY TOUR - Day at leisure. Day 5: 5 DAY TOUR - Sadly we leave after breakfast and retrace our steps to the Northwest arriving home late afternoon. Day 5: 8 DAY TOUR - Full day to Plymouth including a short drive around the Plymouth Hoe. Day 6 - 7: 8 DAY TOUR - Days at leisure in Torquay. Day 8: We depart the hotel after breakfast for the journey back to the North West arriving late afternoon.

YOUR HOTEL -

HH KISTOR HOTEL

The Kistor Hotel is located just about 100 yards from the sea front and Torre Abbey Sands. Its location is great for those who like to stroll out after dinner. Folkestone ...

Blackpool ...

Early history says that the Romans built a large villa here who’s remains were found after a land slip in the 1930s and there are still some findings on display at the museum. Until the 19th century Folkestone remained a small fishing community with a seafront that was continually battered by storms and encroaching shingle that made it hard to land boats. In 1807 an Act of Parliament was passed to build a pier and harbour by Thomas Telford. By 1820 a harbour had been enclosed but never used fully until the South Eastern railway purchased it for their links to the continent. The line closed in 2002 and is only used on special occasions. The town suffered during the war years and the closure of the ferry service to France now has the town waiting for something new.

Blackpool, often head of the table as the most popular resort in the UK, has many attractions along the sea front including the famous Tower that still offers dances every afternoon for a small charge. If you are not a dancer, shops await you, and with free time on Saturday, Fleetwood Market is a great place to relax.

Day 1: We motor south by passing London to the coast arriving in time to settle in before dinner and cabaret. Day 2: After a hearty breakfast we depart to Canterbury where we spend approx 3 hours with the chance to do the shops, visit the Cathedral or take a walk around the city walls and explore the old timber buildings. Early afternoon, we set off through the Hopfields to Deal, a pretty Kent town with attractive shops and sandy beaches which were the home of smugglers in times gone by before returning to the hotel for dinner. Day 3: Free day today, we can arrange a visit to Dover Castle, if there are enough people interested. Day 4: An early start today to travel via Euro Tunnel to France and then on to Ostend where it’s market day, and cheap tobacco awaits. Passports are required. Back to the hotel for 6pm. Day 5: Sadly we set off home today.

HH GRAND BURSTIN

Day 3 : Breakfast before we depart for a pleasant drive to the Lake District stopping in Grange over Sands in time for lunch, before we start our return journey via the old road arriving back about 4pm. Paignton ...

Criccieth ...

Situated on a level position, directly opposite Paignton Seafront and a short walk to the town centre, you couldn’t ask for a better located hotel in Paignton. One of the most popular resorts on the English Riviera, almost everywhere around the town centre is a level walk, with a great selection of shops and a pretty harbour with thatched cottages.

Situated on the Llyn peninsula, Criccieth and its two beaches are warmed by the Gulf Stream and dominated by the mountains of glorious Snowdonia. Closer to home the town is watched over by the famous castle, built by the Welsh princes. This is a fabulous country, ideal for sight-seeing, walking or just relaxing.

Your Holiday Itinerary Day 1: We travel south via the motorway network making suitable stops along the way. For lunch we normally leave the motorway to use a friendly garden centre, arriving at the hotel around 3.45pm. Day 2: Our day out takes us first to Exeter then Dawlish and then on to the historic port of Teignmouth with its Canadian connections. Afterwards we follow the winding coast road back to Torquay. Day 3: We drive through Paignton to Totnes then follow the route of the River Dart to Dartmouth. & Blenheim Palace Oxford dates back to its original settlement in the Saxon period. Originally of strategic significance due to its controlling location on the upper reaches of the River Thames at its junction with the River Cherwell, the town grew in importance during the early Norman period, and in the late 12th century became home to the fledgling University of Oxford. The University rose to dominate the town entirely, and by the middle of the 14th century the history of the town was effectively no more than a footnote to the history of the university. A heavily ecclesiastical town, Oxford was greatly affected by the changes of the English Reformation, emerging as the seat of a bishopric and a full-fledged city. During the English Civil War, Oxford housed the court of Charles I.The city began to grow industrially during the 19th century, and had an industrial boom in the early 20th century, with major printing and carmanufacturing industries.

Your Holiday Itinerary Day 1: Good Friday. After our door step pick ups we join the motorway network and journey to Stratford Upon Avon, where you will have time to explore the Shakespeare story. Cornwall...St.Agnes Torquay ... St Agnes is a picturesque village on the spectacularly beautiful Atlantic coast of Cornwall. Steeped in mining and maritime history the village now contents itself with providing a warm welcome for tourists, many of whom return year after year. They clearly feel, as we do, that it’s a great base. The ferry service to France now has the town waiting for something new.

Your Holiday Itinerary

Your Holiday Itinerary Day 1: We travel south leaving the motorway for lunch near Highbridge. Afterwards we travel on to Launceston where we take a refreshment stop at The Jamaica Inn, made famous by DAPHNE DU MAURIER’s novel. Day 2: We start our day in Falmouth with narrow cobbled streets and piers, this town has a long history with the sea and even today still has major ship building carrying on. Shortly after lunch we visit Cornwall’s only city, Truro, we allow plenty of time to visit the Cathedral and the busy shopping area. Day 3: We give you the chance to visit the Tate Galleries today, our first port of call is St Ives. Coaches are not allowed in the town so all coaches set down at the Park & Ride where a mini bus ferries in & out of the town for a small charge. Departing early afternoon we travel the coast to Porthreath with excellent views of the harbour and the Huers Hut, then on for our afternoon tea stop at the Gold Centre. Day 4: Following the narrow coastal road via Perranporth with superb views nearly all the way we head to Padstow for lunchtime. We allow plenty of time to explore before we return via the inland route. Day 5: A scenic drive to Mevagissey a pretty but busy little port. If you like fresh caught and cooked fish, this is the place to get your lunch. We return after lunch to allow anyone time to visit the beach in St Agnes, it’s a good walk but very pleasant, and there is no access for a coach. Day 6: Well regrettable we have to go home today so be ready to leave before 9.00am and hopefully we arrive home late afternoon.

Wye Valley & Hereford ... This magical Grade I-listed mansion, nestles in the Wye Valley just 20 minutes from Ross-on-Wye and close to the handsome city of Hereford. Take for example King Charles I, who reportedly rested his still-intact head at Holme Lacy in 1645 and Queen Victoria’s daughter Princess Beatrice marked a memorable visit by planting a tree in the grounds. Your visit here will be just as interesting with all the pastime of staying at a country mansion, being waited on and taken on days out, and an entertainment package second to none plus full leisure facilities for you to use.

Isle of Wight ... The island has a rich history, including a brief status as an independent kingdom in the 15th century. Until 1995, like Jersey and Guernsey, the island had its own Governor - most notably Lord Mountbatten from 1969–1974, after which he became Lord Lieutenant until his assassination in 1979. It was home to the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson and to Queen Victoria, who built her muchloved summer residence and final home Osborne House at East Cowes. The island’s maritime and industrial history encompasses boat building, sail making, the manufacture of flying boats, the world’s first hovercraft and the testing and development of Britain’s space rockets.

Your Holiday Itinerary Day 1: We head south to Worcester where there is chance to explore, then through the beautiful Herefordshire countryside to our hotel. With plenty of time to settle in and take a walk in the gardens or maybe a swim before dinner. Great Malvern ...

Isle of Man ...

Great Malvern originated as a spa village with therapeutic qualities attributed to its springs. It was the Georgian fancy of taking the waters and later the Victorian popularity of the water cure that transformed Malvern into a Water Cure town. Although you can no longer take the water cure in Malvern, many of the impressive buildings are still in use as public buildings. The town is largely Victorian but its roots go back much further. The oldest parts of the town can be seen around the Priory Church which was founded in 1085 when Benedictine monks settled here and built a Priory, which was a daughter house to Westminster Abbey.

Midway between England and Ireland, the Isle of Man has attracted visitors since the Vikings arrived in about 800AD. If they could come back today, they’d find a holiday island with something for just about everyone. Douglas is the lively capital where you can ride on horse-drawn trams or steam or electric trains. Its wide bay and promenade offer entertainment and many fine restaurants. There’s all kinds of scenery. Wild and rugged mountains give way to pretty countryside and picturesque villages before these meet the sea and the long, sandy beaches of the perfect holiday isle.

DINER TOUR

Scotland in Miniature ... The rolling hills and attractive coastlines of Ayrshire combine the first part of our tour with visiting some of the better known locations. We have a couple of lesser known and stunning visits on this tour. We then move on the beautiful Isle of Arran, known as Scotland in Miniature, because it has everything that mainland Scotland has to offer, mountains, quiet deserted beaches, dramatic views, superb castles, lochs and glens, wild life such as deer, seals, and eagles, and a wonderful sunset.

Your Holiday Itinerary Day 1: A prompt start, we journey north stopping for coffee served on the coach. We travel on into Dumfries & Galloway with a suitable lunch stop (on board) en-route. After lunch we head north past Drumlanrig Castle into Ayrshire and our hotel, the Menzies at Irvine where we spend the next three nights. Day 2 : Today is one of the highlights of this tour, a visit to Dumfries House. This beautiful property near Cumnock is the collection that Prince Charles was involved with. We arrive around 11am starting with a guided tour of this stunning property and ending with a soup and sandwich lunch (all included in the tour price). Afterwards we have a little time on the estate before we return to the hotel for about 4.30pm. Day 3 : We start our day by driving to Brig O Doon made famous by Rabbie Burns, allowing time for photographs, afterwards we head over the Heads of Ayr to Dunure where we park on the front with excellent sea views with time to explore before lunch on board. After lunch we travel to Ayr for a couple of hours shopping and sightseeing then we return to the hotel. Day 4 : We say goodbye to the Menzies and take the short ride to the Scottish Maritime Museum. A great visit where you will have chance to see a Steam Puffer (remember the Tales of Parahandy) plus many other interesting exhibits. The world famous clipper The City of Adelaide is the worlds oldest surviving clipper and has now departed. At the time this brochure was written she was on her way to Greenwich to be renamed alongside The Cutty Sark and by the time we visit Irvine she will be back in Australia. The maritime museum here is large but we allow as much time as possible. Please don’t think this is a BOYS TOYS tour, on our last visit the ladies thought it was a “very interesting visit.” Afterwards we make our way to Adrossan for our 12.30pm sailing to BRODICK (We will not be giving you lunch today but snacks are available on board ship) arriving on Arran for 1.30pm. We then journey around the southern part of Arran taking in the views of Holy Island & Highland Clearances Memorial. We have a number of photo stops along the way arriving at Blackwaterfoot and the 3 star BW Kinloch Hotel about 4.15pm. After checking in - time for a swim in the hotel pool, after dinner time to relax, there maybe some music tonight. Day 5: We travel over the string road with stunning views of Goat Fell and on to Brodick to visit Brodick Castle allowing 2 hours afterwards to travel through the attractive countryside to Lochranza there we visit the distillery and have a light lunch which is included

Booking hotline 01942 728960

in the price. From here we have a short stop at Lochranza Castle in the village before we follow the coast road around the north of the island. We stop at many places along the way, arriving back at the Kinloch around 4.30pm. Day 6 : A full day at leisure today - maybe walk to the craft centre or along the beach seal spotting. You will be able to get lunch in the hotel. Day 7 : Today it’s back to normality as we travel back to the mainland on the 8.20am ferry. We then make our way through Dumfries & Galloway with picturesque views all the way. We take a break for lunch served on board the coach at Dumfries then head south again arriving in our area about 6pm.

Somerset ... A splendid 18th century Grade II house designed by the great Sir John Sloane, this is one of the most seductive manor houses in the country. In the grounds there’s a wildlife park which is home to some rare species. Hotel guests can enjoy the wildlife park at reduced rates.

Looe ... Cornwall Unlike most of the town our hotel is situated in West Looe. It will probably take you some 10 minutes to walk to East Looe, unless you take the little ferry, but then that’s the charm of the place! The hotel offers us spectacular views from the lounge and a fine table d’hôte menu in the restaurant. Here they make considerable use of fresh local ingredients and fish bought the same day from the port’s fish market. We can relax and enjoy the view from either of the bars, one noticeably more lively than the other, and enjoying our good fortune to be in such a pleasant place.

Your Holiday Itinerary Day 1: A prompt start for our holiday to the beautiful village of Looe. We stay in West Looe at The Hannafore Point, a 3* sea front hotel arriving late afternoon and have time to settle in before dinner. Day 2: Full day to Cornwall’s only city Truro, many places to visit including the Cathedral and many attractive shops. On the return journey we stop at Charlestown for a short visit to the historic harbour. Day 3: A full day to The Eden Project. Often called the 8th wonder of the world, admission included. Day 4: Full day via Torpoint to Plymouth, and also a short city tour via The Hoe and Mayflower Steps. Return via the road bridge. Day 5: You have a full day at leisure, we can arrange a trip on a glass bottom boat for you ‘really good and interesting’. Day 6: Sadly we leave for home today and have suitable stops, normally off the motorway for lunch. Eden Project: Often hailed the 8th wonder of the world, the Eden Project is a global garden for the 21st century. You can experience the sights, smells and sheer scale of the rainforest in this, the world’s largest greenhouse, then sample something of South Africa or California. You can wander among orange and lemon trees, see old olive groves and gnarled vines. What a wonderful use of an old quarry! This really is a unique place. For once this overused description is entirely accurate. And the best thing of all is that there’s always something new.

Hayling Island, Hampshire ... The traditional holiday feel hits you the moment you arrive at Lakeside Coastal Village which sits peacefully on the coast of Hayling Island in Hampshire. Originally called ‘Coronation’ to mark the accession in 1937 of King George VI, co-opted during World War II as a naval barracks and designated HMS Northney, Lakeside’s convivial atmosphere and all-round good cheer is today utterly infectious. From the moment you’re greeted by an appropriately regal squadron of swans in the eponymous lake to your first leisurely stroll around the small central square, you’re struck by the village-like sense of community and wellbeing. As with any thriving village there’s lots to do, from the bars, café and nightly entertainment. With fabulous daytime activities such as an indoor championship bowls hall, indoor games room with snooker, darts and table tennis, tennis, pitch ‘n’ putt, archery plus an indoor heated swimming pool, sauna and steam room plus hairdressers and beauty salon.

Thursford Christmas Spectacular

Pre Christmas Break

The cathedral city of Norwich with its attractive half-timbered houses, is steeped in history. Our main reason for our visit is the now famous Thursford Christmas Spectacular. The ultimate Christmas musical experience is simply one of the most exciting Christmas Spectacular shows ever. It is the most popular Christmas show of all time in England and is a blend of exciting Christmas entertainment, with Christmas songs, carols, dazzling dancers, beautiful costumes, outstanding music and singing from a cast of over one hundred. Each show is a pageant of spectacle and colour - the music, a seamless transition from an upbeat dance routine to a choral rendition of a Christmas Carol, a show which would not be out of place in any London’s west end theatres.

Ludlow’s recorded history begins in 1086 when the impressive castle was first developed as one of a line of castles along the Marches to keep out the Welsh. The local Norman overlords the De Lacy family, who decided to situate Ludlow Castle here also decided to develop a new settlement. This attractive market town in Shropshire is close to the Welsh border and in the Welsh Marches.

Your Holiday Itinerary Day 1: Journey to Norwich with suitable stops en route. Day 2: We leave the hotel about 9am and journey to the attractive town of Sheringham where there is enough time to explore and find a coffee. We leave about 11.30am and travel the short distance to Thursford, where you have time to find a little lunch and see the Grotto (small charge for entry) before taking your seats before 2pm for the start of the spectacular. After the show we return to the Holiday Inn for dinner and the rest of the evening at leisure. Day 3: Cases on board, we leave at 9.15am to visit the Cathedral city of Norwich. We depart after lunch to arrive back in the North West early evening.

Valkenburg ...

Folkestone ...

Christmas Markets

Pre Christmas Break

In the 19th century, because of the natural beauty of the area, Valkenburg became a sought-after holiday destination for the well-to-do in the Netherlands. Tourism developed, especially after in 1853 the railway from Maastricht to Heerlen and Aachen opened. Valkenburg railway station is the oldest surviving station in the Netherlands. In the beginning of the 20th century, wellknown Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers lived in Valkenburg for several years. He helped develop tourism by designing a hotel, an open-air theatre and a copy of the catacombs of Rome. Furthermore he restored the medieval church and designed several tombs and a chapel in Gothic Revival style in a graveyard situated on Cauberg, a steep hill outside the town centre.

Your Holiday Itinerary Day 1: We make an early start and head south to Folkestone for our late morning Le Shuttle crossing to France during the crossing we will serve you with a glass of wine or orange juice, so if you wish to bring a packed lunch that’s fine. After arriving in France we head along the coast into Belgium around Brussels and on to Valkenburg arriving with a little time to spare before our buffet evening meal. The rest of the evening is at leisure. Day 2: We have a lazy start with our buffet breakfast, after we head to Aachan to visit this attractive city and its Christmas Market, we arrive late morning for those of you who wish to explore the former walled city there is an open top bus to take you through the most interesting parts of the city. You may also wish to visit the fine Cathedral. We return to Valkenburg late afternoon. Day 3: Today our drivers have a well earned rest and you have your visit to Valkenburg’s fine shops and the markets all under cover in the caves. There is a small charge to enter the caves. Tonight we recommend you have your evening meal early as tonight is the Parade night in the town centre with many of the shops open till late and there will be music in many of the bars in the town. Day 4: The medieval health resort of Monschau is our destination today set on The River Rur this is a very romantic town and the traditional Christmas Market is only open at weekends, a really great visit before we return for our final evening at The Hotel Schaepkens. Day 5: A reasonable early start today as we head home. We hope to allow enough time to buy a little duty free along the way, again crossing the channel via the tunnel arriving back in the Northwest early evening.

Day 9: We start our day with a scenic steam train ride in the Harz National Park, after which we head in to the city of Goslar. The imperial city of Goslar has a history that is more than 1,000 years old. The discovery of the first veins of silver probably goaded the Saxon and Salian emperors to build their biggest and most secure palatinates here. For centuries it was the preferred seat of government in northern Germany. At the same time a place of Christian worship also came into existence here. The city was called “Nordic Rome”. 47 churches and chapels with numerous towers determine the silhouette of the city. Even today, the view with the towers of the five big parish churches from the elevated Kaiserpfalz is impressive. Late in the afternoon we return to the Maritim Hotel.

The Wurmberg, at a height of 971m above sea level, is the second tallest mountain in the Harz region. Our hotel here is The Maritim Burghotel, where we stay for 2 nights.

Day 10: Our time here in Germany draws to a close as we leave Braunlage and head for the Netherlands, but we are not quite finished in Germany. Our lunch stop today will be at Mohnesee where you will have a chance to walk across the famous Mohne Dam. This was destroyed by 617 Squadron in May 1943 just over 70 years ago. Afterwards we travel on to the last hotel The Postillion Hotel at Arnhem. Day 11: We depart the hotel and motor on towards the coast stopping at Gouda. You will probably have heard of Gouda before if you have ever visited Holland. Gouda has a worldwide reputation thanks its Gouda cheese. Besides cheese, the city has another famous product: ‘stroopwafels’ (syrup waffles). Every year the city is visited by thousands of people who want a taste of these two fine products. After lunch we travel on to the coast to join our overnight ferry. Day 12: We dock about 8.30am and retrace our step through the wolds. Normandy Highlights Highlights...D Day Beaches, Claude Monets Garden, Honfleur, Coffee at Pagasus Bridge Café

Normandy is a very pretty region of France but also has a fascinating history much connected with WW 2. There is a long tradition in cider making and pretty gardens and villages. We opt for ferries to Caen which makes the tour very relaxed.

We arrive at our hotel late afternoon, where the rest of the evening is at leisure. Angers in the Loire... We visit Wigan’s Twin Town for the Accroche-Coeurs festival, with entertainment of all kinds and to suit most tastes,so much to see and do from afternoon to late in the evening each day. Angers city, capital of Maine-et-Loire département, Pays de la Loire région, western France. Angers is the former capital of Anjou and lies along the Maine River 5 miles (8 km) above the latter’s junction with the Loire River, northeast of Nantes. The old city is on the river’s left bank, with three bridges crossing to La Doutre. Capital of the Andecavi, a Gallic tribe of the state of Andes, the ancient town became Juliomagus under the Romans. The succession of counts of Anjou began in the 9th century, and the rule of the Plantagenets was marked in Angers by the construction of magnificent monuments, of which the French Hôpital Saint-Jean (now housing an archaeological museum) is the most striking. The city’s massive, moated château, whose 17 towers are from 130 to 190 feet (40 to 58 metres) high, was built in 1230 on the site of earlier castles; it houses the late 14th-century Apocalypse series of tapestries (woven by Nicholas Bataille). Despite the damage of past wars, particularly World War II, Angers is still rich in medieval architecture. The 12th–13th-century Cathedral of Saint-Maurice retains its original stained glass. If you have a twin family in or near Angers and wish to visit and stay with them, we are happy to offer you a special rate to cover coach and boat fare only. Please contact our office for full details of what we can offer you.

Your Holiday Itinerary Day 1: We finish our doorstep pick ups and head south via the motorway network. We have suitable stops along the way, normally off the motorway. We join our overnight ferry at Portsmouth to St Malo and include cabins onboard but no meals, there is a good self-service cafe and a restaurant on board. Day 2 and 3: We depart the port and head south, our journey time to Angers is approximately 3hours. On arrival we check in at the Mercure hotel, afterwards the rest of the day and Saturday are at leisure. Day 4: Today we offer you a day excursion into the Loire Valley for those of you who wish to get away from the festival for a little while.
