Voyages of Horticultural Discovery By Jennie Carr from Silver Travel Advisor. Imagine waking on a small, friendly ship and pulling into port, with the sun shining and the day ahead full of promise. Head off on an exotic excursion in the Caribbean, visiting Barbados and its stunning orchid garden with thousands of species to wonder at, all growing in their natural habitat. Or step ashore on the tiny island of Margarita, just off Venezuela, where the Laberinto Tropical Gardens play host to a very special microclimate created by giant bamboo, meaning bromeliads, orchids and palms all flourish. You might call at Guadeloupe, which is home to the Deshaies Botanical Garden, where over 1,000 different exotic plants are grown in 15 areas. On the way to these

extraordinary places, you might visit beautiful waterfalls, picture-postcard beaches and laid-back colonial towns. The Caribbean islands never fail to inspire and are worthy of visiting time and again.

alone to meet up with others in a similar position, safe in the knowledge that all the possible issues of visiting new destinations will be taken care of. Single cabins are on offer, as are various excellent deals.

Cruising is an exceptional way to travel to gardens near and far. You need unpack your suitcase just once, avoiding the hassle of land touring and new hotels every night. Your ship is your base, waiting for you to return each day after a rewarding and interesting excursion. What’s more, in the evenings you can relax and dine easily, enjoying the company of like-minded fellow passengers. This is a perfect way for those travelling

If you’d like to stay a little closer to home, a voyage to take in the Channel Islands, famous for their mild climate and unusual plants, might be tempting. The magical island of Herm has multiple award-winning gardens that can be seen with local gardeners. In France, close to Honfleur at Giverny, Monet’s remarkable gardens are forever a wonder. James Priest, the head gardener, is a man with a passion for both plants and Impressionism –

www.50plusmagazine.co.uk

TRAVEL perfect for his job! From April to September 2016, Normandy will celebrate the Impressionist Festival and over 100 gardens that inspired the artists . and painters of this important movement will be open. That says something about the special plants and growing environment in this area, as well as the clarity of the light that the Impressionists loved. A further superb aspect of cruising between gardens is the wonderful Guest Speakers, many of them from the Royal Horticultural Society, who have unrivalled expertise and years of knowledge which they share in fascinating talks on board and in the gardens as they lead excursions. There are rare opportunities to listen to well-known RHS judges, authors and broadcasters, giving real insights into the specific plants you’ll be seeing on your voyage. Prepare to be informed, surprised, amused and entertained! A cruise around Madeira and the Azores will delight anyone interested in horticulture. These islands situated in the Atlantic have a unique climate and are a real botanist’s dream. The lush vegetation, with some unique plants, has led to truly extraordinary gardens in Madeira and wonderful natural growth in the Azores, where each island is quite different from the next. It goes without saying that the Mediterranean is replete with wonderful gardens, some historic, some more modern. The French Riviera offers magical villas, such as Villa Mortola and Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, and grounds to marvel at, as do the islands of Menorca, Sardinia and Corsica. There is so much to discover, especially with the benefit of friendly lecturers and guides. In addition, you can enjoy the glorious architecture and elegance of the stylish ports and resorts.

So if gardens are your delight and cruising appeals, you could combine the two for a marvellous holiday experience!

Great things to do in St Ives, Cornwall

By Jennie Carr from Silver Travel Advisor

Jennie Carr is a radio broadcaster, writer and blogger who is passionate about the South West of England, and especially the town of St. Ives where she spent many of her childhood holidays. She writes for Silver Travel Advisor, the information and review website for mature travellers. Childhood holidays were made of places like St Ives, think sand, sea, sandwiches, ice creams and yes, bottles of pop too! Memory creates an Enid Blyton style Famous Five haze across the experience, leaving a warm and happy glow. So, let’s get up to date and find out just what goes on in this iconic seaside town nowadays.

10

Getting there

St Ives is famously short on parking, with tiny Cornish streets aplenty and limited space to leave the car. So why not try the train from Lelant Saltings where there is loads of parking, and the journey takes about 15 minutes, passing through Lelant and Carbis Bay stations too. It is a pretty train ride and knocks spots of the hassle of a car in the town. Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Gallery Art in this town is famous, it is the light and remarkable landscapes that attracted artists here from the 18th century. This museum was originally Hepworth’s studio. It and the garden are full of her important work in stone, wood and bronze, along with paintings and drawings in the archive.

www.50plusmagazine.co.uk

Beaches

You will not be disappointed! Golden sands and a bright blue sea are in abundance here, try the Blue Flagged Porthmeor, with lifeguards in the summer and great sunsets, the Harbour beach in the town centre complete with fishermen and working boats, Porthgwidden where beach huts are located and glorious Porthminster on fabulous, expansive, golden sands, lifeguards on hand in the summer. Carbis Bay has good facilities, parking and a Blue Flag too, with generally safe water for younger children, although lifeguards are stationed here too. The beaches are generally dog-free from 8am to 7pm, April to October.

Gardens

West Cornwall has a wonderfully mild climate due to the Gulf Stream so the gardens here are a real thing of beauty and benefit from unusual plantings. Think palm trees, sub-tropical bushes and delicate orchids. The town offers Trewyn Gardens and the War Memorial Gardens, as well as Chy-an-Gweal at Carbis Bay. Further afield, Trengwainton near Penzance at Madron and Tremenheere at Gulval are fabulous too. There are numerous little valleys with unique micro-climates where many unexpected species flourish. http://www.stives-cornwall.co.uk/things-to-do/gardens/ st-ives-gardens/

Walks

Whatever time of year you are in St Ives, it’s a great place for a walk! You might enjoy the guided town walks, available most days in the summer, with oodles of information about art, heritage and seafaring. How about a Lantern Walk in the evening or a pirate romp, which is particularly good if you have younger members of the family with you. Or perhaps a bracing hike along the coast from Porthmeor beach to Zennor, where there’s a church with a beautifully carved mermaid and a romantic fairy story to match.

St Ives Festival September

Each September, for two weeks, St Ives buzzes even more than usual with music, exhibitions, walks, talks, workshops, films, comedy, theatre, plays, stories and poetry to suit almost every taste. Local artists entertain alongside household names, visitors try new skills and the town plays host to several hundred interesting events. If you plan to attend, do book accommodation and tickets early! For more information visit www.stivesseptemberfestival.co.uk

Eating and drinking

You simply cannot go hungry or thirsty in the town, the range of eateries is extensive, with all tastes catered www.50plusmagazine.co.uk

for. Whether you are at the beach, using the snack kiosks or the excellent cafes at Porthminster, Porthmeor or Porthgwidden, enjoying a drink at The Kettle and Wink in the Royal Square or treating yourself to a meal at the award winning Seagrass restaurant, the wonderful sea air will ensure you have an appetite! And for tea, cake and ice cream, there’s no better place.

Try surfing

Contrary to popular opinion, surfers come in all shapes and sizes as well as all ages! As long as you’re reasonably fit and relatively agile, a morning spent in the waves learning how to surf, is huge fun. You’ll be given a wetsuit and taught the basics, then supervised as you practise. And if this totally defeats you, a little light body boarding (surfing on your tum!) makes for a laughter-filled few hours. You could of course, just watch the experts or grab a few quiet hours, whilst the younger members of your party get in on the action! For more information visit www.stivessurfschool.co.uk

The Tate at St Ives

Based opposed Porthmeor Beach and celebrating wonderful art from the area, the UK and beyond, various temporary exhibitions keep the gallery interesting. Free tours are available twice a day with a member of staff providing a relaxed introduction to the wonderful art on display. There are also events, workshops and activities available for all ages. And of course a café is on site too!

Visit churches and chapels

St Ives has an unexpectedly large number of churches and chapels, ranging from the main parish church St La, with Barbara Hepworth’s wonderful Madonna and Child statute, to the simple single room chapels of St Leonard’s and St Nicholas’ where fishermen and sailors prayed before heading out to sea. Methodism has had a place in St Ives since John Wesley’s visits, from 1743 onwards, here, there is still a Teetotal Street as a permanent reminder! 11

Stroll through the Seasons at Trentham Gardens 12

www.50plusmagazine.co.uk

Described as the “garden make-over of the decade” by The Daily Telegraph last year, Staffordshire’s Trentham Gardens was named the UK’s “Garden of the Year” in the annual BBC Countryfile Magazine Awards earlier this year. One of the country’s must-see gardens, Trentham Gardens mixes high-end design with family-friendly fairy trails and woodland walks.

Hambleton Country Park At Hambleton Country Park, we can make your dream come true!

The Italian Garden The Italian Garden planting is designed within the historic framework of Sir Charles Barry’s original Italianate Garden of the 19th Century. Renowned Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medallist,Tom Stuart-Smith, was commissioned to revive The Italian Garden with one of the largest contemporary perennial plantings in Europe. The recasting of The Italian Garden planting is a contemporary scheme based upon a naturalistic style which combines herbaceous perennials and ornamental grasses. The garden is designed to provide interest all-year-round, many of the perennials in The Italian Garden are left standing throughout Autumn and into late Winter. The planting utilises hot bold colours towards the top of the garden, where Trentham Hall once stood, with more subtle and lighter colours as the planting approaches the lake.

Floral Labyrinth A labyrinth of paths meanders through 30 beds of tall perennial planting, offering up bold colours and wonderful aromas. Piet Oudolf’s contemporary scheme is set against a backdrop of historic parkland, containing old Yew trees, a Tulip tree and an Acer Capidoccium-Cappadocia maple - which has the largest girth in the British Isles. The depth of colour

Sunset Park, Sower Carr Lane, Hambleton FY6 9EQ Only 20 minutes from Blackpool, Lytham & 40 minutes from the Lakes and shadow of the majestic Cedar of Lebanon, contrasts beautifully with the bold drifts of herbaceous perennials. Tucked away in a peaceful part of the garden, flanked by the River Trent, no visit to Trentham is complete without losing yourself in The Floral Labyrinth. The garden goes on long into the Winter with wonderful seed heads that capture the frost.

Rivers of Grass The Rivers of Grass evoke a sense of intimacy for the visitor amongst the unrestricted flow of plant form and texture, developing within the garden throughout the year. 14

A naturalistic weave of grasses and punctuating herbaceous perennials, have been specifically selected to grow en masse. They are adapted to thrive in naturally challenging growing conditions. Two varieties of Molinia caerulea dominate the scheme. Both grasses provide texture and movement and most importantly thrive in the variable conditions of the area. The ground here is usually damp, will occasionally flood, but may be on the drier side throughout the Summer. The grasses are interspersed with a narrow range of other perennials, giving the appearance of a watery meadow in late Spring, before the grasses dominate the scheme in the Summer, turn golden in Autumn and are cropped back in midJanuary.

BRITISH BEEKEEPERS ASSOCIATION LAUNCHES FAMILY CAMPAIGN INSPIRED BY WINNIE-THE-POOH AND FRIENDS TO HELP SAVE THE BEES

London, 25 June, 2015: England’s honey bees are still in trouble – that’s the verdict of a new study from the British Beekeepers Association (BBKA), which has launched a unique ‘Friends of the Honey Bee’ campaign inspired by Winnie-the-Pooh and friends. The campaign, which has been created in partnership with Egmont Publishing - the publisher of the classic Winniethe-Pooh stories - aims to publicise the threats to Britain’s honey bee population. The famous characters feature in a newly created ‘beefriendly’ guide that highlights simple and fun activities for families to do together over the summer in the great outdoors to help our honey bees. It is available in print as part of the BBKA’s ‘Friends of the Honey Bee’ member pack, or free to download from www. friendsofthehoneybee.com. The BBKA annual study surveyed 900 British beekeepers selected at random, to establish the impact that last winter has had on honey bee colonies. Nationally, colony losses were 14.5% last winter, continuing the declines observed over the last three years. There were regional variations*: the West (-18%), North East (-15.5%) and Eastern regions of England (-14.7%) being the areas that have seen the biggest drops. This year’s loss rose by over 50% in comparison to last year (9.6% in 2013/14), and despite not being as high as the decline rate in 2012/13 (33.8%), the results show that colony losses remain at an unacceptably high level. Poor and variable weather, bee diseases and pests such as Varroa, and starvation due to lack of honey stored in the hive are all suspected to have contributed to the decline – underlining the importance of plenty of good nectar and pollen forage being available for honey bees, throughout the year.

www.50plusmagazine.co.uk

And although three out of five (63%) British adults are aware that honey bees are on the decline and 86% understand the vital part that honey bees play in the health of the environment, two-thirds (67%) have little or no idea of what they can do to help, according to supporting research amongst 2,000 British adults and children. To help families understand the part they can play, the new ‘bee –friendly’ guide includes a brand new short story and ten simple activities to support British honey bees - all featuring Winnie-thePooh and friends in various parts of England, lovingly drawn by illustrator Mark Burgess, who coloured the original E.H Shepherd black & white art and the latest book ‘Return to the Hundred Acre Wood’. The consumer research also provided an insight into the next generation’s views about care of the environment. Over four out of five (83%) British children aged 5-10 believe it is important to look after our environment. However less than a quarter (22%) of children are aware of any steps they could take in order to help save the honey bees –

although three quarters (76%) would like to help if they were told the honey bee was struggling to survive. David Aston, President of The British Beekeepers Association says: “While many people are aware of the plight of the honey bee, there are many that don’t know what they can do to help. We hope that by supporting our ‘Friends of the Honey Bee’ initiative with the brand new guide inspired by Winnie-thePooh, families across the country can get involved, making a practical contribution and supporting bee health research.” Commenting on the partnership, Nicole Pearson, Associate Publisher from Egmont Publishing said: “Winnie-thePooh is famed for his love of honey, so who better to encourage families to get out and about and take part in fun activities that can help support our honey bees. We’re very excited to be working with the BBKA to support such a worthwhile cause.” For more information on supporting the honey bee and to download the ‘bee-friendly’ guide inspired by Winnie-the-Pooh and friends visit www.friendsofthehoneybee.com

WINNIE-THE-POOH’S 10 SIMPLE STEPS TO HELP SAVE THE BEES, AS RECOMMENDED BY THE BBKA*** 1. Plant your own window box 2. Create your own vegetable patch or tub together 3. Plant a flowering tree in your garden 3. Make some ‘seed balls’ and throw them into the wild 5. Use arts and crafts to educate the younger generation on the importance of bees e.g. finger puppets, painting bee pictures, knitting bees etc. 6. Learn to become a beekeeper yourself by attending a course through the British Beekeepers Association 7. Bake together at home using local honey 8. Build habitats 9. Volunteer for your local beekeepers association or visit your local apiary 10. Don’t panic, if you see a honey bee swarm, contact your local beekeeping association. ***Further information on the activities to help save the bees is available in Winnie-the-Pooh’s ‘bee-friendly’ guide – available to download free from www. friendsofthehoneybee.com 15

FOOD & DRINK

Fish and chips with pea purée and tartare sauce

Sometimes the simple classics are the best. Take your time to get this right and you will have a world-class dish! Halibut is the ideal fish to use, but any good quality white flat fish will be fine. You need the best quality brand of frozen petis pois for this recipe. Anything else will give a grainy texture – so don’t skimp on your peas! At my pub we always serve our fish and chips with round chips simply because they look more interesting.

SERVES 4

4 halibut fillets, about 180g each sea salt flakes, to taste table salt, to taste lemon wedges, to serve – wrap them in muslin if you want to posh this up

FOR THE CHIPS

4 large potatoes for chipping, such as Maris piper vegetable oil for deep-frying

FOR THE TARTARE SAUCE 3 egg yolks 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 4 teaspoons white wine vinegar 500ml vegetable oil 2 hard-boiled eggs, shelled and grated 1 shallot, finely chopped 2 tablespoons finely chopped gherkins 2 tablespoons capers in brine, drained and finely chopped 2 tablespoons finely chopped parsley leaves

FOR THE BEER BATTER 2 egg whites 240ml beer or sparkling water 350g self-raising white flour large pinch of bicarbonate of soda

FOR THE PEA PURÉE

25g butter 1 shallot, finely chopped 1/2 teaspoon sea salt flakes 100ml chicken stock 1 tablespoon finely chopped mint leaves 350g frozen peas, defrosted 4 teaspoons caster sugar

To make thick chips, top and tail each potato, then use an apple corer to cut out the centres. Remember, we are making round chips here. Bring a large saucepan of salted water to the boil over a high heat. Add the potatoes, return the water to the boil and boil for about 5 minutes until tender, but still holding their shapes. Use a slotted spoon to remove them from the water and leave them to drain. Dry well on a wire rack. When the potatoes are completely dry, heat enough oil for deep-frying in a deep-fat fryer or heavy-based saucepan until it reaches 140°C. Add the potatoes and fry for 8–10 minutes until the oil stops bubbling, which means all the moisture has been removed. Use a slotted spoon to remove the potatoes from the oil, return them to the wire rack and leave to cool completely. Meanwhile, make the tartare sauce. Place the egg yolks, Dijon mustard and white wine vinegar in a food processor and blend until smooth. With the motor still running, slowly add the oil until the mixture emulsifies and thickens. Stir in the remaining ingredients and season. Cover and keep in the fridge until needed.

To make the pea purée, melt the butter in a saucepan over a low heat. Add the shallots and sea salt and fry, stirring occasionally, for at least 5 minutes until softened, but not coloured. Add the chicken stock and mint and bring to the boil. Add the peas and sugar, return the stock to the boil and boil for 5–6 minutes until the peas are tender. Strain the peas and shallots over a bowl to catch the liquid, then transfer them to a blender. Add 2 tablespoons of the cooking liquid and blend until smooth, but not too thin. Adjust the seasoning with table salt, if necessary, then set aside and keep hot. To make the batter, mix the egg whites and beer together until fluffy. Mix the flour and bicarbonate of soda together in a large bowl and add the egg-white mix. Just before you are ready to fry the fish, fry the potatoes for a second time. Reheat the oil to 180°C. Add the potatoes to the fryer again and fry for 2–3 minutes until crispy and golden brown. Drain well on kitchen paper, sprinkle with salt and keep hot in a low oven. Reheat the oil to 180°C, if necessary. Dip the fish into the batter, letting any excess drip back into the bowl, then add to the oil and fry for 3–5 minutes until crispy and golden brown. Drain on kitchen paper. Keep the fried fillets warm in the low oven until they are all fried, but do not cover them with kitchen paper. Sprinkle with sea salt flakes and serve immediately with the chips, pea purée and tartare sauce and lemon wedges for squeezing over.

LARGE ALL-IN-ONE VICTORIA SANDWICH

1. Pre-heat the oven to 180°C/Fan 160°C/Gas 4. Grease two 20cm (8in) sandwich tins then line the base of each tin with baking parchment. 2. Measure the butter, sugar, eggs, flour and baking powder into a large bowl and beat until thoroughly blended. Divide the mixture evenly between the tins and level out. 3. Bake in the pre-heated oven for about 25 minutes or until well risen and the tops of the cakes spring back when lightly pressed with a finger. Leave to cool in the tins for a few minutes then turn out, peel off the parchment and finish cooling on a wire rack. 4. When completely cold, sandwich the cakes together with the jam. Sprinkle with caster sugar to serve.

TIP Here are the ingredients and baking times for smaller cakes so that you don’t have to calculate the quantities. Follow the instructions for the Large All-inone Victoria Sandwich and fill with 4 tablespoons of strawberry or raspberry jam, or a little less, if you like.

This must be the best known and loved of all family cakes. The all-in-one method takes away the hassle of creaming, and ensures success every time. Baking spreads give an excellent result, but the cake won’t keep as long. For an 18 cm (7 in) Victoria Sandwich, use 3 large eggs, 175g (6 oz) of softened butter, 175g (6 oz) of caster sugar, 175 g (6oz) of self-raising flour and 1½ teaspoons of baking powder. Bake in two 18 cm (7in) greased and lined sandwich tins for about 25 minutes.

Chicken named the favourite meat for barbeques As the school summer holidays get into full swing, a survey has found that the humble chicken is likely to be in high demand on barbecues. Bangers and burgers have lost out as more than a third of people named chicken as their top pick. Encouragingly, a fifth of people said they take extra care when cooking chicken on the barbecue. However 31% said they never worry about it, despite the fact that over a quarter of a million people fall ill every year due to food poisoning from campylobacter, the bug most often carried on raw poultry which can cause serious sickness and diarrhoea. The poll by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) aims to promote the Chicken Challenge – the FSA’s campaign to encourage everyone to do their bit to reduce the number of people who get food poisoning from chicken every year. Between July and September, there is an approximate 50% increase in cases of campylobacter poisoning. As bacteria grow fastest in warm temperatures, the FSA is asking the public to remind themselves of the little things they can do to keep their families safe.

Kevin Hargin, Head of Foodborne Disease at the Food Standards Agency, commented: “We all want to serve up a sensational barbecue that also helps keep our family and friends safe. Although it’s great to be spontaneous, it’s safer and easier on the day if you prepare in advance by following simple measures such as pre-cooking chicken in the oven before putting it on the barbeque to ensure it’s cooked through, not washing raw chicken and avoiding cross-contamination of raw meats.” Consumers can help avoid the build-up of food poisoning bugs by taking the following simple steps: 1. Pre-cook - it’s a very good idea to cook all chicken in the oven prior to giving it a final ‘finish’ on your barbecue where possible. Your friends and family will still experience that special barbecue ‘charred’ taste – and you will know that you’ve cooked the chicken all the way through. This technique can also be used for sausages, burgers and kebabs if you’re cooking for large numbers, as you’ll want to avoid providing undercooked food. 2. Charred doesn’t mean cooked cook your barbecue food thoroughly

until you are sure that your poultry, pork, burgers, sausages and kebabs are steaming hot, with no pink meat inside. Turning meat regularly and moving it around the barbecue will help to cook it evenly. Charred on the outside doesn’t always mean cooked on the inside so it’s always safer to cut open and check your burgers, sausages and chicken. If in doubt – keep cooking. 3. Remember, disposable BBQs take longer to heat up and to cook food always check that your meat is cooked right through before serving. 4. Avoid cross-contamination by storing raw meat separately before cooking - use different utensils, plates and chopping boards for raw and cooked food. Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and hot water and dry them before handling your food for the barbecue and after handling raw foods including meat, fish, eggs and vegetables. 5. Don’t wash raw chicken or other meat - cooking will kill any bacteria present, including campylobacter. Washing chicken, or other meat, can spread dangerous bugs on to your hands, clothes, utensils and worktops by splashing. 6. Keep plates and cutlery away from raw meat and fish - never serve your guests cooked food on a plate or surface that’s had raw meat or fish on it, and don’t use cutlery or marinades that have been in contact with raw meat. There’s no point in serving up food with a flourish if you’re adding bugs back into the mix. 7. Keep cold foods below 8°C and hot foods above 63°C - don’t leave food that you would store refrigerated standing around in the warm. You can get a cool bag for this purpose. Keep the number of times the bag is opened to a minimum until the food is eaten. 8. Cook marinades thoroughly if you intend to use them as a glaze or sauce. 9. If you’re preparing rice beforehand, ensure it is fully cooked - cool and refrigerate it within onehour of cooking and make sure it is consumed within 24-hours. All figures stated are from a poll taken in Wales.

Implanting

confidence

Ann Knight was so impressed with her husband’s new dental implants that she turned to the same expert team – and the retired business duo from Cheshire are delighted with the results! Leading the way in UK implant technology is Lancashire-based Douglas Lee, who was one of the first dentists in the country to adopt the highly successful pioneering ‘Fast and Fixed’ technique. Highly experienced in this same-day implant procedure, Douglas Lee Dental Associates, have a team of professionals, including in-house dental technicians, to replace teeth permanently – omitting the need for dentures. It was Douglas Lee’s national reputation for excellence that originally led Barry and Ann Knight to the practice two years ago. Barry was referred to Douglas Lee by another implant dentist who had attempted to replace Barry’s top 24

teeth, which had been damaged by a serious car accident, with implants. Barry explains: “The original implants were loose, they weren’t right so the dentist said he could not go any further with it and referred me to Douglas Lee. “I travelled over from our home in Cheshire to see Dougie and he immediately said he would be able to help but he was totally honest and said it would take some time. In the lead up to the ‘Fast and Fixed’ day Dougie and the team were fantastic. It’s not like going to the dentist, it’s like visiting a friend. They explained everything so I wasn’t at all nervous about the procedure. www.50plusmagazine.co.uk

I had got to know them and it is obvious that they are experts in their field,” adds Barry, who is now retired from his manufacturing business. Implant expert Douglas Lee explained what would be necessary and reassured Barry that the problem could be fixed. On the day of the procedure Barry arrived at Douglas Lee Dental Associates early in the morning. Sedated, Barry was painlessly fitted with a completely new set of upper implants in a procedure that has made Douglas Lee Dental Associates a flagship practice and a teaching surgery for the German pioneered ‘Fast and Fixed’ technique. “To become a teaching surgery for ‘Fast and Fixed’ is a real compliment. It is a massive boost to us and it gives us the chance to show other dentists what can be achieved,” says Dougie. Testament to their high level of skills, Douglas Lee Dental Associates were the first team in the UK to carry out a full set of upper and lower jaw implants within a day. During their years of experience, the team has refined the procedure and have state-of-the-art in-house technology including a Cone beam CT scanner, a Helbo laser that eradicates over 99 per cent of harmful bacteria and an on-site dental lab with a technician who custom makes the teeth implants so patients can benefit from this amazing same-day procedure. Preparation is key to the success and the team of dental nurses, cosmetic dentist Usman Riaz, dental technicians and Dougie himself, all play their part on the day. www.50plusmagazine.co.uk

Sedation ensures that no pain is felt and the patient remains relaxed. “I didn’t feel a thing,” says Barry. “It was a long day and I was a bit tired but it was completely painless. I had slight bruising afterwards but that soon disappeared – and the implants are fantastic! “They feel like my own teeth, the sensitivity is still there when you are biting and chewing. I am thrilled with them and I can’t thank Dougie and the team enough.” Barry’s wife Ann underwent major dental work around 30 years ago, however her teeth were beginning to fail and she was too nervous to consult her dentist. “Barry told me I had to go and see Dougie, so I plucked up the courage and went. I was adamant that I wanted a good set of dentures as there was no way I was going to undergo any pain with implants,” recalls Ann. When she went to see the team at Douglas Lee Dental Associates, Ann was told, following an x-ray, that the news was not good. Her gums were in bad shape and she had several failing teeth. I have always looked after myself and losing my teeth was my idea of hell. It was a terrible shock. Dougie said I wouldn’t like dentures but left the decision totally to me. “He explained the procedure and reassured me it would be pain free so I eventually made the decision and said ‘yes’.”

In Ann’s case, she was so delighted with the results in her upper jaw that shortly before Christmas, she had her lower set of implants done under the same ‘Fast and Fixed’ procedure. “When I looked in the mirror and smiled it was unbelievable!” recalls an emotional Ann. “I have always covered my mouth when I smiled because of my teeth, but now I smile all the time as it has given me so much confidence. “They don’t look fake, or overly white, they just look totally natural and I am thrilled! I am 110 per cent happy with them – and I told Dougie and the team that I don’t take this for granted, I am very grateful to them all.”

HOME permanent part of the property. This additional space makes your house a more desirable place to live and, should you come to sell your property, it immediately allows would-be buyers to envisage using that extra room for their lifestyle needs. To open up kitchen and living areas, how about installing BIFOLDING DOORS? These clever additions not only look stylish but offer a large area bringing in light, and they can easily fold back to allow in fresh air and the beauty of your garden.

Bringing the outside in... NATURAL light and space are among the popular hallmarks of modern homes in 2015 whatever size your property. When we investigate new apartments or houses with a view to moving, a feeling of space with plenty of natural light in evidence is what we are searching for. It not only makes us feel better but it’s a great way to help reduce energy costs. Architects and developers know that these elements sell their homes to the public and plan accordingly. But, it may not be quite so easy to harness plenty of natural light and create more space in less modern properties. Most of the homes built in the UK after World War II favoured smaller, more intimate rooms which were relatively cheap to heat, and this legacy has continued to a lesser extent into the early Noughties.

bring the outside inside. CONSERVATORIES are particularly popular for this, not only because they come in such a variety of sizes and styles to suit all kinds of properties but because they are now cheaper and more efficient than ever. Conservatories enlarge homes and can genuinely enhance the look of a property. They offer a private, bright space for hobbies, for family time or just for reading alone. They also bring people closer to their gardens, both physically and emotionally, and allow a new perspective on greenery without having to suffer from the vagaries of the British climate.

However, in the last 10 years or so in particular, more of us are demanding open plan living areas with as much natural light as we can get. In fact, through solar panels in the roof more and more of us even turn natural sunlight to domestic energy to cut household bills.

ORANGERIES are another popular addition to homes, generating extra living space and creating a special place to live – and work if you prefer – in a private but bright room. They tend to contain more brickwork than glass, can be a bigger project to create, but always add elegance to homes.

Getting more fresh air into your home along with that vital light and creating more space for growing families - or simply giving yourself more room to breathe - can be costly if you have to think about remodelling homes or building on large extensions or wings.

You can add a bold and unique visual element to your property with a GLASS ROOF EXTENSION. The glass naturally creates a light living space and the beauty of these extensions is that they can be tailor-made into even the most testing of spaces, letting in an unrivalled amount of daylight.

So, more and more people are going for a range of other options that still help to

28

TILED ROOF EXTENSIONS are also designed to look and function like a

These doors come into their own for families and open up the whole house. Socialising in the kitchen – which often predominates at parties - is then less cramped and more easygoing. Cooking smells vanish and individuals can spill out onto the patio to enjoy the best of the outside in convivial company. Another clever way to enjoy the outside and still protect yourself from the less attractive parts of the British weather is to install an AWNING. These handsome, often brightly coloured additions to your home allow you to dine or just sit outside, away from the sun or even drizzle, as an easy extension of your lifestyle. You can get awnings custom-made to look just right on your home. And the beauty of them is that when you don’t need them they simply fold away until the next time. Many of us enjoy our gardens and it’s lovely, not only to see close up the fruits of your labours when it comes to admiring the plants, flowers and other greenery, but also because of the health benefits. Fresh air is good for the digestion, improves your blood pressure and heartrate, strengthens your immune system and cleans your lungs. It also gives you more energy and sharpens the mind – and, probably the most important thing, it makes you happier!

So it’s worth crafting a lifestyle that takes advantage of Nature’s free gifts, and open up your home to all the best possibilities of living. Please note: Planning permission may be required for some cases. Check with your local planning authority

Transform your existing conservatory into a whole new room ... the way you intended strengthened and insulated, rain noise is reduced by up to 95 per cent, so you can enjoy that dinner party without worrying whether it's going to rain! Amazingly it has all these benefits, whilst at the same time costing less on average than ceiling blinds and a quarter of the

cost of plastic tile effect replacement roofs. Every installation now also comes with an IBG 10-year insurance-backed guarantee, making it the most costeffective solution available. For more information contact Beverly on 01253 846663.

Conservatory Roof Insulation.com is a new insulation solution that transforms the inside of your conservatory roof to give it a full insulated, strong and smooth plastered ceiling, whilst keeping the original shape of your roof i.e. not a flat ceiling, hence there is no light reduction. It does all this without even having to change anything on the outside of your conservatory, so no planning permission is required. The family-run business, based in Lytham St Annes, was founded in 2009 and is one of the first companies to offer this product in the UK, alongside its original inventor. After cross-ventilating the ceiling, Conservatory Roof Insulation.com installs a high performance composite insulation to the inside ceiling of the conservatory, combining multiple layers of reflective and insulating materials to reduce heat loss by up to a stunning 90 per cent. No other conservatory insulation solution can deliver anywhere near this figure. Your conservatory will stay warm in the winter and prevent the 'greenhouse effect' during summer. You'll therefore need to use far less energy to keep your conservatory warm, drastically reducing energy costs. After the support framework, cross ventilation, insulation and panelling is installed, the conservatory ceiling will then be plastered to perfection, allowing it to be painted in the colour of your choice or you can opt for a upvc finish. The entire process takes just two days to complete. Your conservatory ceiling will no longer look like a conservatory ceiling, but instead will match perfectly with all the other rooms of your house. And because the entire conservatory will be

DENTURE SOLUTIONS What is a Clinical Dental Technician? A Clinical Dental Technician (CDT) is a qualified dental technician that has under gone further Education and Training in areas such as Medical Emergencies, Cross Infection Control and Oral Pathology (cancers and anomalies) to name just a few sections that make up the Diploma in Clinical Dental Technology as Awarded by the Royal Collage of Surgeons (RCS). It is this qualification that allows the clinician at Denture Solutions to be able to be registered and regulated with the General Dental Council (the official body for protecting the public with regards to dentistry) and carry indemnity insurance. It is this qualification, which means that only Dentists and Clinical Dental Technicians are the only Dental Professionals permitted to supply dentures direct to the public. A dental technician is not qualified to supply a denture directly to the public. However, despite this being an act of Mal practice many technicians will still practice illegally without informing the patient that they are not qualified. If you are unsure if your denture provider is qualified; ask them for their GDC registration number, then contact the GDC to see if they are registered not just as a dental technician but as a CDT. Dentures, like most things, have a limited lifespan; usually around 5-7 years. After this period of time the denture can start to offer inadequate facial support, which can leave cheeks looking sunken and withered as well as lips appearing excessively wrinkled. New dentures can reduce these age related features by supporting the facial tissues without making the teeth looking large and protruded. DENTURE Solutions fully understands the daily problems that wearing a denture can create. Its clinical technician, Andrew Corlett (CDT, RCS (Eng)) and his team of highly skilled technicians and nurses aim to provide a complete professional denture service, with discreet care and understanding of what your needs and expectations are. Using its onsite laboratory enables the team to combine clinical and technical skills together to design and create beautifully handcrafted dentures focusing on comfort, fit and appearance. Andrew’s passion and enthusiasm for natural lifelike dentures has helped him create a denture clinic where the finest detail and care are delivered in a relaxed atmosphere.

It’s friendly, professional staff will guide you through the whole process making your experience a relaxing and enjoyable one. Let Denture Solutions solve your denture problems with our friendly, personal and confidential service. We provide natural looking Dentures designed and created just for you.

Denture Cleaning Here at Denture Solutions we use the Renfert Sympro Cleaning System which is recommended by the British Association of Clinical Dental Technology.

Mrs Graham from Waterloo “When I first saw Mr Corlett’s ad, regarding his dental clinic, I was interested, but also anxious, as I had not heard of him before. However at my first consultation I realised my anxiety was not necessary. We discussed what I needed and what would be best for me. The end result is a perfect set of the most comfortable dentures I have ever had.”

Dentures change with age; under a microscope you can see how the surface becomes increasingly coarse. Everyday cleaning at home is correct and important, but cannot prevent deposits forming and spreading. These deposits change over time; they harden within a day and trap pollutions. The denture can lose its lustre and become marked and unattractive.

In just 30 minutes the denture undergoes an intensive cleaning process. Cleaning should be carried out at least 3 to 4 times a year. Have your denture cleaned regularly and professionally at Denture Solutions. Thank you to Mrs Graham who kindly allowed us to use her testimonial and images.

Legacy Liverpool is an awareness campaign to encourage people from all walks of life to leave a gift in their Will to charities and voluntary organisations working locally across Merseyside. The charities that make up Legacy Liverpool all have one common purpose - they all have a local project or work within the region to benefit people in Merseyside.

Why is making a Will important? Making a Will is the easiest way to ensure your wishes are met and that loved ones and those important to you are provided for in the way you intend. You can rest assured that all your assets are dealt with correctly, with debts paid, and loved ones looked after including your family, friends and maybe your favourite charity. Gifts in Wills help charities plan for their future to help generations to come, and a legacy gift is such a special way to support the charities you love. We understand that family and friends come first, but if you’re able to leave a gift no matter how big or small, this could help to make a real difference.

CARE should be provided as far as possible in well-equipped facilities with specially trained, caring staff on duty 24 hours a day. The CQC can oversee this. They can ensure that people retain as much independence as possible in comfort and privacy. They can encourage providers to provide personalised accommodation for individual taste together with pleasant communal dining and lounge areas. Specialist furniture designed specifically for the needs of the elderly, such as comfortable bespoke armchairs and seating makes a huge difference. Specialised seating, such as that manufactured by Repose Furniture, can correctly support residents who may spend a large proportion of their day seated; such seats can also form the basis of a number of exercise routines for those residents with limited mobility.

Dr Hilary Jones

Q & A: Choosing the right care If you have ever had to consider care home provision for yourself, or a loved one, you will no doubt understand that it can be a difficult time. There are a myriad of questions to consider in order to ensure you select the care home that is right for you, meeting your individual requirements, and most of all, placing your wellbeing at its heart. So whether you, or a loved one, are considering entering sheltered living accommodation, residential care, or a care home environment, it is important to research thoroughly beforehand to ensure the care environment you select is right for you. Resident Doctor, and Expert Healthcare Advisor with Repose Furniture, Dr Hilary Jones recently took part in a question and answer session to uncover how The Care Quality Commission together with healthcare professionals, care home providers, and specialist furniture manufacturers, can work together to ensure an integrated, person centred approach to care, keeping best practice at the forefront for care home residents. During the discussion, Dr Hilary explained that by offering existing, and future, care home residents an integrated approach to care which focuses on their individual needs and 42

requirements, healthcare professionals and care home managers can really engage with their residents, creating meaningful relationships which can really work towards offering a best practice model of care. Q: Elderly people in care homes often suffer from a variety of long term healthcare problems, which require specialist care and support. With this in mind how could The Care Quality Commission (CQC) ensure that care home residents are receiving the care they require? A: Today all care providers have a responsibility to care for and support all older people including those living in residential, nursing, respite and rehabilitation care homes. This includes a commitment to treat everyone with dignity and respect and to provide them with choice and control over their own care. Specific individual requirements

Care home residents should be encouraged to engage in varied activity programmes to keep their minds busy and prevent isolation. By employing an activities co-ordinator to engage residents in the things they are most interested, care homes can actively promote physical and mental wellbeing. Q: Who needs to be involved in order to effectively achieve a person-centred, integrated approach to patient care? A: One important aspect of this kind of integrated approach is liaison between care home managers, GPs, and other healthcare professionals who should be working together to co-ordinate patients’ needs in a singular approach. The CQC clearly have a responsibility to make sure that all medications for example are handled in the safest way but these high standards should reach out into other areas and this holds true for specialist dementia and endof-life care providers also. Care Home Managers are in an excellent position to co-ordinate these approaches and to ensure that residents obtain the very best care tailored to their personal needs. Q: Can you outline some of the benefits as a result of offering a person-centred, integrated care plan as opposed to a more generalised approach? A: The traditional generalised approach to care for the elderly left people feeling disempowered and rather helpless. Benefits of offering residents a person- centred, integrated approach to care would include putting residents and their families at the heart of all decisions. The collaborative team philosophy should ensure that the residents enjoy as much independence

as possible with as little conflict and as much compassion, dignity, and respect as possible. This personalised approach is seen to be beneficial to everyone and its incorporation into health and social care is now being adopted as a priority in the UK and part of the Government’s Putting People First programme for social care. Q: Would an integrated approach to care home healthcare give rise to better understanding of a patient’s healthcare needs? A: All patients and residents of care homes come from different backgrounds and upbringings and maintain their own beliefs and interests. Each in turn will have their own particular set of social circumstances and medical care needs. With integrated care, patients and residents are seen as equal parties in planning, developing, and assessing their care to ensure that it is appropriate to their needs. It relies on the personal qualities of each person in care and the staff to build non-judgemental and empathetic relationships. Q: Do you believe that there are steps managers at care homes can take to facilitate an integrated approach to patient care? A: Managers at care homes can take many steps to facilitate an integrated approach to patient care. By speaking to the patients themselves and to their families they can build a picture of that person’s past and present, and of their medical and social care needs and preferences. The resident themselves can help decide which activities they wish to be involved in and to what extent. Their medical and nursing requirements can be tailored to their individual needs and each healthcare professional informed in turn as to what role is expected of them in the context of which other services are being delivered. Depersonalisation, lack of control, and the removal of all individuality was once the greatest fear for somebody entering residential care. With an integrated approach to person centred care there is no reason why these fears and apprehensions should not become a thing of the past.

Stocks Hall Care Homes Dr Hilary Jones’ article identifies key areas that providers should be continually addressing, changing and practicing, ensuring Quality Person Centred Care remains. Stocks Hall Nursing & Care Group constantly reviews all aspects of care to ensure highest, quality standards are met. Across the Stocks Hall Nursing & Care Group, traditionalised and generalised approaches have long since gone. At the heart of Stocks Hall we believe ‘Every Person Is Valued’ and every dimension of care should always reflect this. We appreciate that each person is a very unique Individual and has their own personal life story to tell. Stock Hall Nursing & Care Group has a very clear philosophy...... the more known about a person’s life history, the better equipped we are at facilitating a positive, living experience. ‘The Stocks Way’ is our unique perception on this philosophy, heavily influenced by a ‘Person Centred, Integrated Approach’ to Care. We listen to Individuals, family and representative’s views. Encouraging their input into deciding how, when, and in what ways they would like their care to be delivered. We facilitate in keeping life long interests and hobbies as part of each Individual’s life, as far as it is possible, whilst offering a varied social, activities programme with many excursions throughout the year. We find with sensitive, compassionate planning, in liaison with all concerned, Quality Person Centred Care is not compromised. Stocks Hall’s 28 years of experience has taught that giving personal choice and control, is of paramount importance in maintaining happy, fulfilling lives. Psychology’s answer to happy grandchildren this summer A psychology expert has come up with a six-point guide to help grandparents looking after children steer clear of family feuds and get more enjoyment from the patter of tiny (and large) feet this summer. Professor Martin Milton, Director of Counselling Psychology programmes at Regent’s University London, explains: “Each generation grows up in different circumstances, so what suits children today won’t always seem appropriate to adults. “When grandparents have a good relationship with parents, an open discussion about any anxieties can often create a closer family understanding. “However, not all families manage this and grandparents often use examples of grandchildren’s behaviour as a way of lecturing parents about their own perceived faults. “Rather than using criticism to try and make a difference, grandparents should think beyond taking away electronic gadgets and come up with interesting and fun alternatives.” Professor Milton’s six-point guide on a happy summer for grandparents (and their families): 1. Get involved and offer to have the kids on a regular basis, and make sure these times include alternative activities. This gives grandchildren a chance to bond with you and enjoy things like walks in the park, reading, cooking, or helping in the garden 2. Develop your own ‘house rules’ so grandchildren know, while they may have four-hour online marathons at home, gadgets and computers are on for no more than an hour in your house 3. Make the other three hours something your grandchildren can relate to - don’t just turn devices off then banish them to homework or isolation 4. Make a plan. It’s no good telling grandchildren off for playing Xbox if all that happens instead is joining you for hours of mindless TV-watching 5. Don’t be passive: when you know your grandchild has a hobby, make sure you encourage it. If your grandchildren like ballet, check out what’s on and take them to the local theatre if you can 6. Talk to them about their wider lives. Show an interest in what else they’re doing, who their friends are, what ambitions they have, and places they’d like to visit.

When New Directions was established in Sefton in 2007 it was the first local authority social care trading company in the country. Eight years on, the organisation remains at the forefront of the care sector across Sefton Borough and beyond, with a team of almost 500 staff providing a wide range of services for older Sefton residents and other adults with disabilities and enduring mental health needs. Each year New Directions provides more than 150,000 hours of care for people at home and in the community. A key feature of this service is the emphasis on reablement and rehabilitation support, helping clients to return home from hospital quickly, avoid readmission, and live independently for as long as possible. New Directions also offers a day service for older people at a number of locations across Sefton, including those with dementia, helping them to live fulfilling lives both at home and in the community. Activities on offer include music, sensory stimulation, recall therapy, gardening, and social outings. New Directions Chief Operating Officer, Penelope Fell, commented: “The last few years have been challenging for us - and indeed the wider care sector - because of changing commissioner priorities and reductions in funding in some areas. “I am sure there will be further pressures in the years ahead, but I am equally confident that New Directions will rise to the challenge, and continue to fulfil our mission which is to provide the highestquality care to the most vulnerable people in our community.”
