Our mission is to forge connections between art and audiences, and our vision is to be an active partner in developing the cultural landscape of Albuquerque and New Mexico. Our values are inquiry, diversity, collaboration and accessibility. 516 ARTS offers programs that inspire curiosity, dialogue, risk-taking and creative experimentation, showcasing a mix of established, emerging, local, national and international artists from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Welcome to 516 ARTS’ Spring Season! Downtown Albuquerque is hopping this spring, and all of us at 516 ARTS are excited to be in the midst of it. As a totally independent organization, we are fortunate to be able to showcase a series of exhibitions and events that have grown out of our partnerships with the UNM College of Fine Arts, including the Lands Arts/Art and Ecology Program for its groundbreaking conference Decolonizing Nature: Resistance, Resilience, Revitalization. We are also thrilled to be teaming up with community partners including Basement Films, Tricklock Company and AMP Concerts to be part of three exciting festivals in March and April: Experiments in Cinema, the Revolutions International Theatre Festival and the citywide Women & Creativity series; and to present two new Downtown murals on the Sanitary Tortilla Factory and the Tower Plaza Building. We hope you’ll enjoy the many opportunities to reflect on and learn about issues of shared concern, such as our environment, free speech and racial and gender equity. The fantastic line-up spans local to international, with artists visiting us from Argentina, Colombia, Poland and Russia. Please join us this season to experience, think, feel, discuss and learn through interacting with art and artists from near and far. Curator Candice Hopkins says, “There is potential in fragments and there is possibility in pieces and in parts. As stand-ins for the whole, they offer new narratives created out of the freedom of improvisation. The philosopher Walter Benjamin once wrote that ‘finished works weigh lighter than [the] fragments.’ The works at the beginning of each artist’s career are heavy with intent. Necessarily so. Collectively, they offer glimpses into other worlds, and at their best, reveal insights into ourselves, as well.”

Karsten Creightney: Paper Visions Solo exhibition February 4 – April 1, 2017 OPENING:
Saturday, February 4, 6-8pm Music by DJ Leftovers • Member Preview & Artist Talk: 5-6pm (become a member at 516arts.org/join) 516 ARTS presents a solo show in the upstairs gallery by Karsten Creightney, an accomplished Albuquerque artist and UNM MFA alumnus. Paper Visions is the culmination of Creightney’s latest body of work that combines collage, photographs, printmaking and painting into dream-like tableaus that depict the intersection of urban and natural environments. By recontextualizing scraps of found imagery though his multi-media process, Creightney focuses on the experience of wonder and looks to create a space where new possibility is created from the remnants of the past.

Decolonizing Nature Pop-up exhibition April 15 – 29, 2017 RECEPTION:
Earth Day, Saturday, April 22, 5-8pm Artist Walk-through 5-6pm (open to the public) 516 ARTS presents Decolonizing Nature, a pop-up exhibition in conjunction with the environmental justice conference titled Decolonizing Nature: Resistence, Resilience, Revitalization. The exhibition focuses on artists working in film, video, photography and printmaking, exploring different styles and approaches to environmental activism. The conference delves into recent advances in the arts, architecture, humanities, religion and sciences, to address climate change and other anthropogenic crises that are rapidly degrading Earth’s life-sustaining ecological fabric. This gathering is an opportunity to discuss, debate and deliberate with an incredible line-up of luminaries on building creative alliances for environmental conservation and sustainability for all living beings.

Experiments in Cinema v12.3: The Cubano Edition Pop-up exhibition April 15 – 29, 2017 PRESENTATION & RECEPTION:
Thursday, April 20, 8pm 516 ARTS welcomes the Experiments in Cinema festival for a pop-up installation of experimental films in the upstairs gallery. This year, the annual celebration of international cinematic experimentation presented by Basement Films focuses on cinema and video art from Cuba, which represents the first time that such a comprehensive study of alternative cinematic practices from Cuba has been staged in the United States. On view at 516 ARTS is Three In One Flags by Nestor Siré from Cuba, among others. At this event, Siré is giving a free public presentation about current trends in expanded cinema installation work from Cuba. Nestor’s presentation is followed by a reception to view the installation and meet other visiting Cuban artists and scholars. Also featured at 516 ARTS are video works by Deborah Kelly (Australia), Timo Kahlen (Germany), Narda Azaria Dalgleish (Scotland) and Beth Hansen (USA).

MURALS
Pastel: Botanical Mural Project
March 2017 LOCATIONS: Tower Plaza Building 510 2nd St. NW Sanitary Tortilla Factory 401 2nd St. SW 516 ARTS presents two new murals in Downtown Albuquerque by renowned Argentinian artist Francisco Díaz (a.k.a. Pastel) from Buenos Aires, in anticipation of Cross Pollination, an exhibition later this year about bees and others pollinators and their role in the world’s food supply. Pastel, who is both an architect and a muralist, has created murals all over the world, most recently in Italy, Portugal, Poland, Australia, Mexico and Miami. Using his distinct visual language and decorative style, he fills immense wall surfaces with patterns based on the local flora of the region. His botanical references address history, geography, society and politics, while exploring the relationships between urban art, architecture and city life. Borderlands Benefit
Thursday, February 16, 6-8pm ADMISSION: $25, tickets: teresa@516arts.org 516 ARTS and New Mexico Immigrant Law Center (NMILC) are teaming up to celebrate New Mexico’s immigrant community and raise funds for the arts and immigrant justice. In this politically divided time, the Borderlands Benefit gives you a chance to show your support for justice that transcends racial, political and socioeconomic lines. The event will support the work of NMILC, which empowers low-income immigrant communities through collaborative legal services, advocacy and education; and next year’s exhibition at 516 ARTS titled The U.S./Mexico Border: Place, Imagination and Possibility. The evening includes JIMMY SANTIAGO BACA, renowned Chicano poet who was abandoned as a child and began to read and write poetry in prison. His prolific career includes over a dozen books and an honorary PhD from UNM. Poet LIZA WOLFF-FRANCIS will read from Language of Crossing, a collection of poetry that mirrors the true heart-stories along the U.S./Mexico border. Musical guests LAS FLORES DEL VALLE (Carol Vigil and Leila FloresDueñas) sing to preserve the many musical genres that are native to these Borderlands. PUBLIC FORUM:
Women Artists Speak Out: Feminism & Creative Expression Saturday, March 11, 4-6pm An intergenerational, international and interdisciplinary event for Women & Creativity In celebration of the citywide celebration Women & Creativity 2017, 516 ARTS presents an intergenerational, international and interdisciplinary public forum of women who work in a variety of art forms including visual art, theatre, dance, performance art, writing and journalism. Each of them has a story to tell about being a woman artist today, and each artist’s lineage is from different places and times in women’s history. This gathering creates an opportunity to ask, “What can we learn from one another’s experiences? How do our experiences emerge from those of our mothers and grandmothers? What can we imagine for the next generation?” Everyone is invited to contemplate the past, present and future of art and feminism with a special line-up, including: ERIN GALVEZ, a visual artist whose work is on view in the UNM graduate exhibition at 516 ARTS; DAGMARA ZABSKA, a theatre artist from Poland who is a visiting artist for Tricklock Company’s Revolutions International Theatre Festival; KELSEY PASCHICH, a dancer and choreographer who is the co-founder of SHIFT DANCE; DORIS DIFARNECIO, a performance artist, activist and scholar from Colombia; and MARGARET RANDALL, a literary artist and activist who has lived and worked extensively in Latin America; with moderator MEGAN KAMERICK, a radio, TV and print journalist who focuses on women’s issues. How to Start a Revolution with Pussy Riot & Nemcatacoa Theater
Tuesday, March 14 Join 516 ARTS, AMP Concerts and Tricklock Company for an exciting night of art, performance and activism at three Downtown venues, kicking off the 17th Annual Revolutions International Theatre Festival and celebrating Women & Creativity 2017.
RECEPTION: 5:30-7:30pm at 516 ARTS, 516 Central Ave. SW, Free The evening starts with a Revolutions Festival reception at 516 ARTS with performances by NEMCATACOA THEATER, guest artists from Colombia for Revolutions, who combine physical theater, contemporary dance and live music in a series of movement poems and installations. PUSSY RIOT: 8pm at the KiMo Theatre, 423 Central Ave. NW PUSSY RIOT is a Russian feminist punk rock protest group based in Moscow. Founded in 2011, it has a variable membership of 11 women ages 20 to 33. They stage unauthorized provocative guerrilla performances in unusual public locations, which are edited into music videos and posted on the Internet, as well as reported widely by international media. Their lyrical themes include feminism, LGBT rights, opposition to the policies of Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom they regard as a dictator, and links between Putin and the leadership of the Russian Orthodox Church. This event features a performance piece and conversation with the internationally renowned activist artists. Attention Artists! Call for Proposals opens: April 1, 2017 Deadline for proposals: August 1, 2017, 11:59pm Mark your calendars for the next round of the Fulcrum Fund. This unique, annual grant opportunity for local artists is developed and administered by 516 ARTS as a partner in the Regional Regranting Program of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. In 2017, $60,000 will be available for a minimum of 12 area artists to receive $2,000 to $5,000 grants for experimental, collaborative projects with a public facing component. Now in its second year, this program is open to independent artists residing within an 80-mile radius of Albuquerque. In 2017, the guest jurors include LOWERY STOKES SIMMS, who was just named one of the Most Influential Curators by Artsy and has served as Curator at the Museum of Arts and Design, The Studio Museum in Harlem and The Metropolitan Museum of Art; and RENÉ MORALES, Curator, Pérez Art Museum Miami.
Info Session for Artists Saturday, April 29, 10am-noon 516 ARTS invites those interested in applying to the Fulcrum Fund to attend an informational session in Albuquerque on April 29, which will be repeated in Santa Fe during the summer. These sessions cover an overview of the program, eligibility, examples of past selected proposals, and practical information about developing your project budget and other logistics.
