Somaesthetica - RMIT XGL & SCID Workshop Shih-Chien University, Department of Industrial Design, October 13-17 2014 Brief Workshop Description Ubiquitous Computing, Responsive Environments, Prosthetics and Robotics and the Internet of Things are changing the ways in which we physically interact with the real world. The Somaesthetica workshop explores how designers can enhance physical experiences in real spaces withemerging technologies. The aim of the workshop is to conceptualise innovative objects and environments that stimulate enjoyable physical activity and social interaction in public spaces. Presenter & Facilitator Tim Ryan - Exertion Games Lab, RMIT University, Melbourne Australia Workshop Title Somaesthetica is a term quickly coined for this workshop. It is a simple derivative of somaesthetics, a theory developed by Richard Shusterman that emphasises the benefits of understanding our bodily experiences. “By exploring the fundamental features of our embodied ways of engaging the worldand transforming it through action and construction, somaesthetics can provide usefulinsights and experiential skills to help designers produce products and situations that provide more rewarding and pleasurable experience. Shusterman Somaesthetica is intended to refer to the design of products and spaces that utilise new technologies to enhance the aesthetics, and functional and emotional aspects, of bodily movement and tangible interactions in social spaces.
