2 PARADISE LIBRARY "I have always believed that the man who has begun to live more seriously within begins to live more simply without. In an age of extravagance and waste, I wish I could show to the world how few the real wants of humanity are. To regret one’s errors to the point of not repeating them is true repentance. There is nothing noble in being superior to some other man. The true nobility is in being superior to your previous self." Ernest Hemingway

ART FAIR AT A DOCK This design is located at Hankou Riverbank park, Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. My aim is to shape and rebuild Wuhan waterfront landscape features from the perspective of historical cultural heritage and daily activities in this area. This project locates on the core area of the park, it is surrounded by Yangzi river and old neighborhood, which was once used as concessions. Wuhan, a city thrived from water transportation and transaction, is a city where Yangzi river and Han river intersect. So I added a fair in this museum to make is become a box where citizens can enjoy, buy and produce art works or just pass by them. Museum is a non-daily space , however, fair is somewhere the most ordinary in our daily life. I hope to join them together to make it become the place where creates and displays life of citizens. Art is something above daily life, and this is the place where art will return to daily life, in the meantime, everyone can share and enjoy the museum with colorful activities.

Generally, fine art museums only open at daytime, however, it is at the core of the park and full of various kinds of activities day and night. The spaces in this museum is removable in order to inspire different kinds of activities, and inspire artists to create displays coordinate with the space. Moreover, the water in the river will rise us and submerge the ground floor of the building during flood season. So the spaces for exhibition will rise up during flood time to answer this situation. Consequently, it is the place will break the limit for activities only happen on daytime in museums. One evening in the museum is equally amazing as well. It is not only a museum but also somewhere true street life will happen.

MASTER PLAN This fine art museum is located at Han Kou Riverside park, a place where the water in the river will go up and submerge the park during rainy season. It is communities on the other side of the park, where citizens have lived for a long time. So I joined daily activities with waterfront landscape to rebuild the scene of the riverbank. Also, there are skyscrapers behind the museum, so I lower the height of the museum to make it become a horizontally volume of the skyline. I used truss to represent the element of crane. The canvas on the rooftop are element to indicate that it is like containers and cranes under.

There have been diverse activities in the park. Most of individuals in this area are citizens lived nearby and tourists. In the mean time, also citizens from all over Wuhan come over here to enjoy the beautiful view of river and skyline day and night. However, there is not much commercial activies have been put here though people need them as well as artistic appreciation. Consequently, I added these to fit people's need, and inspire them to enjoy their day in the museum.

VIEW OF ART FAIR Wuhan is thrived from water transport and transaction thousands years ago, and its unique culture is named as MATOU culture, which means a culture with chaotic street life. Docks give life to this city, and we can see activities in docks like bargain and freight. Fair is a space day-to-day in our life. However, museum is a space tagged with non-recurring. I want to join these two spaces together in the site to make a fresh new experience for people visit the art dock. Thus, I put different types of functions in the fair to make it become a paradise for citizens. They can enjoy the beautiful view of Yang Zi river, as well as the delicate art works displayed. And listen to a concert or even have a square dancing which is commonly seen in middle aged and elderly aged Chinese people. Moreover, they can just go through the museum without feeling the boundary of museum and do some exercise like go biking. It is a place where displays not only art works but also citizen's activities, and you can just join these activities.

Generally, a museum only display art works. Though we usually claim that art is above life, we still need to create them in our lives. Thus I believe we can join creation, display, communication and selling together, in order to promote the development of art creation. So I put artists' studios and galleries in the museum. And also space they can communicate their prospectives. Moreover, a place for buying and selling art works is added on the ground floor as well. In this museum, art can be approachable for everybody. So it is a dock with special functions, when people wandering here, they can feel and touch the unique history and culture of the city. Though the dock is totally different like other docks nearby, they can still feel a kind of relationship between them substantially. 4

The word museum or fine art museum has a vague definition, they are not a typical kind of architecture. You can see at least four types of architecture in the definition of museum: galleria, exhibition hall, fine art museum and salesroom. All these types of spaces can display art work., and they all have interactions between audience and works in some way. From the aspect of architecture, display space has no different with other spaces - they are not purely practical, neutral or scientific. Comparing with railway station, airport and hospital, modern display space does not only follow technical index, it seems more civilized. However, they are not like church design, which has strict rules, either. Early galleria is only a general corridor. So I chose this prototype as my start of exhibition spaces design. And I create an art fair in the site, which can make visitors wonder freely in the museum. They will feel a kind of free in the area. Moreover, they can experience more comparing with going to a general museum. People will share different experiences based on their role. But if you are only an individual passing by, you may get different experiences in a same day. You can share the chaos of the fair, watch art works or even create some. In the same time you can join the square dancing or Tai Chi group from citizens nearby, or just have a cup of tea and see the beautiful view of Yangzi river. And if you are tired of seeing art works, you can have a picnic or take a ship to go around. What is more, this museum will not be a block for roads in the park. If you just a person passing by, it is still ok for you to just go though the site without any stop. So this project is far beyond a museum and it can create city life and display them, anyone can see or join these colorful activities and get leisure in the visiting. One day on ART FAIR AT A DOCK can be a solution to multiple issues, and it can fit the need from different people.

PRARADISE LIBRARY yo, que me figuraba el Paraíso bajo la especie de una biblioteca. —Poema de los dones I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library —Jorge Luis Borges

This project is located on Tanhualin,Wuhan, Hubei Province,China. It was the headstream of library science in China. And it is also a mission field a hundred years ago. Being surrounded with old houses, lots of people come over here for sightseeing, the new library is built for citizens nearby and also tourists. And it is the solution for the shortage of library in this district. This library project innovates me from the concept of library. Library is not only a place for collecting books, it is a place to record the whole world as well. That is the reason why I quote the poem from Jorge Luis Borges, who is an Argentine short-story writer, essayist, poet and translator, and a key figure in Spanish-language and universal literature. I want to create a "paradise" for books,And a paradise libaray like Borges had described.

In Borges' book The Library of Babel, he create an imaginary universe composed by countless books or we can call it a library. Borges' narrator describes how his universe consists of an enormous expanse of adjacent rooms. In each room , there is an entrance on one wall, the bare necessities for human survival on another wall, and four walls of bookshelves. Though the order and content of the books are random and apparently completely meaningless, the inhabitants believe that the books contain every possible ordering of just 25 basic characters(22 letters, the comma, the space). Though the vast majority of the books in the universe are pure geberish, the library also must contain, somewhere, every coherent book ever written, or that might ever be written, and every possible permutation or slightly erroneous version of every one of those books.

In his books, he always uses maze as a metaphor, which implies the human world and human thinking. In Borges 's maze, you can not find an entrance and a way out. You can not find the meaning of the maze, either. So the paradise library can considered as a maze. I used this figure to design the ground floor, which is composed by music hall, exhibition space and rest area. Exhibition space and rest area are required by the community and the business street nearby. And music is human will which is objectified, which will lead human will into the zone of paradise.

MASTER PLAN

He stated that idealists claimed a hexagonal lobby is an absolute space. And at last he told the reason:" library is a sphere, its accurate centre is any hexagon, its circumference is far beyond to reach. Also in the book of 24 philosophers shows the reason why he claims that: God is an infinite sphere, whose centre is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere.

resting area

Thus in my design , I create a public space like a maze for people who come and visit the business street in Tanhualin, which has almost no public space now, and a sphere for book shelves in the library, all the books in the library are put in the sphere. Meanwhile stairs are all in the sphere, either. So the sphere is the answer to paradise library, a library that is ideal for books and anyone come by.

The main street in Tanhualin is an old street with commercial function, and a lot of people hang over here. However, there is little public space around , so I created a public space with functions of display, rest, music hall in the ground floor of the library, in order to make a space shared by community citizens and tourists.

Inside the library, the most important space is a sphere full of books. It is the space of transportation. We can see the book sphere in every single room in the library, and citizens can use their hands and drones to get the books. I believe real books in this cyber era still shed lights , they have their own glory.

Multi-Agent Chaos is a program designed for generating complex patterns which contains both order and chaos quality. The main part of this program is a multi-agent syatem motivated by boty algorithm and the image input.By carefully select the resolution and other parameters, the program could provide a series of results with different ration of chaos. By studied grey scale picture,we apply it to points to make them rotate and iterate, so points will draw lots of lines on the picture, which consists the basic of our design.

Image Interaction

AMBIGUOUS WHITE Architecture is expressing a quality of light. It should also allow you to appreciate nature that is around you. White is all colors. It is everywhere. Everywhere youlook. Whiteness, in a sense, reflests nature, it refracts light, it make you more aware of the colors of nature because of the whiteness of the buildings. - Richard Meier

Construction Design The real wall in the office is 4800mm x 2800mm. Comparing with the size lazer cut can work, we divide the sheet matal into 4, and it is 2800mm x 1200mm per sheet. And we use nails to fix the sheet metals on the wall. As the wall is made of gypsum board, we have to fix the board fisrt and then paint the metal. So we draw the sheet metal which will be operated in laser cut and then locate the place nails will be on the sheet metal, and the principle for locating the nails is to reduce the free ends as many as possible,.

Wuhan University is surrounded by Shizi Hill and Luojia Hill with beautiful natural scenery. The two hills influence the school in various dimensions. I used these two hill's imagenary as my concept , Lei Jun Maison is used for firms started by teachers and students and university 's labratory and management, so it can be regarded as a combination of enterprise and university, also a bridge for students to get an access to future company. Also an opportunity for doing pioneering work in various field.

A combined space is added on the middle of the building

Podiums are transformed with the same form

SITE ANALYSIS

The site is at the south west corner of Wuhan university, surrounded by Bayi Road tunnel at south and Second ring road at west, so I build up landscape to reduce the impact from traffic, which may be annoying visually and acoustically to staff in the building. Next to the site is the gate of the university, which is a famous place of interest with tourists come over, so we are not supposed to build a mansion that will cause a distraction from core sceneries of campus.

SITE PLAN

18

The maison is at the south west corner of school, which is part of the new district in Wuhan university. As its functions are pretty normal, there is not much worth discussing about shape of the skyscaper. Thus what I concerned more is about the relationship between the site and environment. And because of the image of hills is commonly seen on campus and the site, I creat volumes like rising-up hills to make the maison closer to people and reduce the passive effection of environment outside the campus.
