TKUA 52th/2015-2019

This is a portfolio of selected works from knowing nothing to being able to complete architectural projects. I am willing to ask modestly for your advice. Personally, it is a great time to review how much I have grown in the past four years of studying architecture and also a starting point for the graduation design. To be honest, the studying process is pretty hard, but the sense of accomplishment is irreplaceable. After all, architectural knowledge needs to be accumulated all the time and learning through doing. Never be afraid to try something new and being wrong, the most important thing is to having curiosity and always keeping it. Also, I believe that design would make life better. I must express my very profound gratitude to my parents, teachers, friends, and people all around me for their love, support, and encouragement, without whom I would never have enjoyed so many opportunities. Breathe in deep. Hold it. Relax. Let it go. 07.2019

The Exhibition of The Village EA2 / 11 Visitor Center, Exhibition Space JianGuo Village, Yunlin, Taiwan Director : Neil, Lin

FALL 2016

Architecture Portfolio 2015-2019

JianGuo Village is located in HuWei Town, Yunlin. It is the only agricultural village in Taiwan and has an affiliated military airport. Due to the reconstruction of the old army, the residents were forced to move out after 2005. The village is like a ruin that has been idle for many years. Many houses were destroyed, let alone a fire disaster... Without proper preservation or restoration, the memories and cultural resources of the village may disappear. Therefore, the government plans to build a cultural park by combining history and landscape with the agricultural village, simultaneously, it would be an important node of Yunlin county. 14

As a visitor center design project, the first phase of the master planning tries to accommodate tourists in the small information and exhibition space. Thinking about the landscape, historical building (the Japanese colonial period, early years of R.O.C., and current conditions), and the characteristics of agriculture and military village, these are all amazing elements in the design.

The Exhibition of The Village

The JianGuo Village originated from the Japanese Army’s selection of the Air Force’s military base during the Second World War in 1938. Later Japan's defeat, the KMT government moved to Taiwan, it still places as a military fortress. JianGuo Village was once the largest village in Taiwan and composed of four small villages with their own entrances and passages, as time passes, the glory of the village was no longer exists. According to the statement, the life of the villagers was very poor, and lack of supplies, but everyone was content.

15

Master Planning

Architecture Portfolio 2015-2019

Imagining that the information center and the exhibition space as a microcosm of the village. The exhibition space is designed as a box by walls, creating a different experience. Using bricks from the village to replace ordinary building materials, so that the whole design would generally become a part of the village.

The spaces are connected with the wooden platform and greens, which closes the relations between boxes (indoors) and the site. The landscape and scaffolding (roof) conform to the order of the site, softening the confliction caused by the scattered spaces.

The Garden Hostel EA3 / 16 Hostel, Visitor Center, Reprogramming Tamsui Riverside, Taipei, Taiwan Director : Jenny, Ling

FALL 2017

Architecture Portfolio 2015-2019

Following the end of World War II in 1945, Tamsui reverted to being a small fishing town as a township of Taipei County. With the expansion of nearby the city, Tamsui slowly became a center for tourism along the northwest coast. After the completion of the Taipei Metro's Tamsui Line in 1997, the town experienced a 22

sharp increase in tourist traffic, reflected in the completion of several riverside parks, the growth of open-air markets specializing in traditional handicrafts and street-stall snacks, the construction of a fisherman's wharf, and the increase in passenger ferries traversing across and along the river.

Community, Welfare Center & K6 EA3 / 17 Elementary School, Welfare Center, Community Space Wanhua NanJiChang, Taipei, Taiwan Director : Ching-Huang, Ju

Architecture Portfolio 2015-2019

NanJiChang, as its name suggested, this place was a military airport long ago, when under the Japanese colonial rule. It is nested within the Babacho area as this place as once known, a military training ground. When the Japanese retreated after 1949, this place became a dumping ground for rubbish and a slum for shady folk who spilled over from nearby. In an effort to clean up the area, the government cleared the slums and old infrastructure left behind by the Japanese, and in its place built the very first government public housing program here, which is what we see today as Nanjichang Apartments which still stands.

34

NanJiChang is famous for the night market nowadays.

Legibility

Architecture Portfolio 2015-2019

The urban texture is created by regional position and identity. While the site is located in the Zhongzheng district, the texture is more similar to the Wanhua district. Historically, the Wanhua district was very prosperous, as time passed, the expansion of the modern Taipei city, it gradually declined. The site located in the most disadvantaged old community which led to many social problems, such as elders living alone, denizened brides, and the physically challenged people. Although there is a well-known night market in the community, the residents laugh at themselves living in the most prosperous "slum" in the city.

Different from other areas in Taipei, the site is located in the old and complex residential area, with the Tamsui River to the west and the flourishing New Year Avenue - Dihua Street to the south. There are schools, parks, historical monuments, and temples in the surrounding, which could be described as rich in culture and life functions. It could be seen that compared to other modern residential in Taipei City, the site has a unique characteristic. Hence how to design a social housing in the site and connect to the surroundings would an attractive part of the project.

In the unforced situations, the residents have opportunities for communication. In addition to space transparency (even vertical relations), residents would have more chances of encounters. The public spaces between villages provide some SOFT UNITS (indoor/outdoor), increase opportunities for activity and interaction.

FALL 2018

Architecture Portfolio 2015-2019

Research on a configuration (Gestaltung) as the design concept. First of all, we know that all configurations are made up of surfaces, which are composed of many curves. (Mesh: In 3D computer graphics and solid modeling, a polygon mesh is a collection of vertices, edges, and faces that defines the shape of a polyhedral object.) When the planes are no longer flat, spaces are created, then coming out the perspective view, which has infinite ways to express space. At the beginning of this design, studying the "Bauhaus Dance"(Oskar Schlemmer - The Theater of the Bauhaus 1923), and developing the configuration on the "human" scale. There are two main concepts When The Body Draws the Abstract Space. / Man as Dancer. Then, Oskar Schlemmer divided the Bauhaus Dance into the following four configurations for people in the stage space - The laws of the surrounding cubic spaceman. / The functional laws of the human body in their relationship to space. / The laws of motion of the human body in space. / The meta-physical forms of expression. Design started with the geometric transformations (2D / 2.5D / 3D) of these four rules, then proceed with single objects and "interactive" experiments. As could be seen that "interactions" in Bauhaus Dance, increases the potential of spatial configuration, whether it’s the same man or bodies met each other, that show many opportunities to create space in dynamic performances. In the analysis phase, drawing collages to perceive the relations between all elements of the stage. Most important of all, converting four types of man and setting up dynamic performances with corresponding geometric shapes. The study includes a variety of body movements, also known as body language, standing, bending, spinning, kicking, waving, squatting, stepping, jumping, kneeling, etc. Pole Dance / Schwarz / Gelb - These three clips staged by Oskar Schlemmer in Bauhaus. Learning from keyframes of the dance, spaces would be changed by interactions in the stage. At this time, "periods" would be another significant elements in the configuration.

68

Interestingly, there is a short stage, ''Human

Space Machine - Stage Experiments'' as an experiment during the design process. Capture dynamics into images and organize them into a script, which was virtually created by periods and spaces. However, these elements such as trajectories and paths have countless definitions and results, therefore, the project would lead by the designer with computer-assisted.

Intertwining Field and Body with Digital | Gestaltung

Later, convert the selected segments to spatial prototypes by deconstructing the 2d elements of characters, fields, and periods, then make the plane into 2.5d models to increase the level. As a result, there are some prototypes with time and space significance as the preliminary database. After completing the concept transformation, proceed to space and architectural design.

The phase is like a rehearsal, explaining the purpose of the Gestaltung.

CITY DRAMA | 03 / TAIPEI ISLAND /

Owning a Utopia is the dream of many people living in the metropolitan. The site is on the sandbank between Taipei City and New Taipei City. Try to take advantage of the unique location of Taipei Island as a stage for the city and setting up a theme park with art, performance, and exhibition, then name it as City Drama. There are only a few residents on the island, and the only way to enter it is to take the stairs from the Zhongxing Bridge. Attempt to redefine the role of Taipei Island in the urban space and show the publicity through the design.

116

Taipei Island would become a relay space for bicycles. In the name of the theater, people can have a restful place when crossing the Tamsui River. The functions include a small exhibition space, an open theater, leisure platforms, activity squares, and landmarks (pavilions).

Returning to the original concept of "Gestaltung" and responding on urban scales at the end of the project. The notations, such as various users, activities, and traffics will be represented in the park.

There stories between the Roundabout and the Double-cross. About records from 40 years ago to today in Taipei. This is a chapter fictions (traditional Chinese novel with each chapter headed by a couplet giving the gist of its content). Each chapter describes a different story, but it is at the same time and site. The overall structure of the fiction is composed of multiple fragmentary stories. Having different perspectives to piece together a contemporary Taipei, if someone wants to understand the whole picture. ''The novelist describes the time and space 130

background, the architect creates spaces, and the experiencer thinking about issues.'' But the three are still interlocking, trying to discuss and study issues at the same time. These three roles are always in dialogue with each other, discussing and studying various issues at the same time. Exaggerated or satirical descriptions are not just criticisms but hope that through these impacts, we could be positively inspired. Found out the Taipei that we had never seen before.
