Loads of different activities at the events: Each day there will be BBQ, live DJ who you can practice your DJ-ing skills with, inflatables - assault courses to laser quest games, henna tattoos, a pamper tent with hair chalking, braiding and nail painting, cake decorating. Along with these there will be a variety of different activities at different location through like - tchouk ball, BMX and skate jamming, t-shirt painting, rugby, boxing, face/body painting, clay pigeon shooting, sailing, climbing wall and possibly even Scuba-diving amongst other things! In this article I focus on why and how I think under 18’s can benefit from being physically fit and strong through gym training and regular physical exercise.
Under 18’s should aim to do at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. It is not necessary to do it all in one go. The exercises can be done in intervals of 15 to 20 minutes throughout the day. This includes anything from playing a sport, going to the gym or even walking up and down stairs. Shopping… In Wickham Village Wickham was once the largest market village in Britain, and still retains the largest village market square in Britain… just without the market stalls. But it conveniently provides a pretty big customer car park now for all the shoppers and tourists that visit the shops dotted around historic and beautiful traditional buildings of the square. The shops provide an array of boutiques and services that could almost self-contain a resident living in Wickham, but it also boasts many other shops tucked away inside tiny shopping centres that can only be seen in all its glory by coming in for a browse. Warwick Lane Shopping Centre from the frontage looks like a single shop stood next to Greens Restaurant and the pharmacy, and what used to be RG Warwick Hardware. Now inside is an emporium of various shops, café and hair salon. Walk through the old fashioned looking ‘Lane’ with its lanterns and stone floor. Browse the boutiques for jewellery, fashion, childrenswear, art, gifts, antiques and collectibles. Then pop upstairs for a coffee and Panini or cake. Sit in the open plan café packed full of interesting collectables, home wares and many more antiques and jewellery. Perhaps support The Rowans Hospice shop. Located a little further into the square, the well-established Bay Tree Walk has been for many years a regular favourite for many visitors and locals as a regular place to visit for unique gifts, speciality chocolates, home furnishings, health and beauty salon and Tea Room. There are cabinets too with unusual collectables and jewellery. Established for over 26 years Bay Tree Walk is well known in the village and for many, the Tea Room offers a great place to catch up with friends over Tea and Cake. Please do come and see us soon.

Local chefs will take to the stage at a cookery demonstration unit and entertainers have been booked to sing and dance at one of three “busking spots” around the Square. Free children’s entertainment has been organised and the local primary school has been invited to get involved. The whole event is being organised by a group of volunteers supported by the Parish Council and helped along by Market Towns Development Officer for Wickham, Heidi Isa. So far the Organising Team of the first ever “Taste of Wickham” festival is hoping that this formula will be a winning one. With the aim of inviting locals and visitors alike to discover everything that is great about the market town, Taste of Wickham will be opened by the Mayor of Winchester at 10am on Sunday 14th September. With the word “taste” in the name, you would of course expect food, but as Chairman of the Organising Team, Ben Sawyers explains, it’s about much more than that.

“We started off with the idea of holding a food festival, but very quickly we realised that if we wanted people to really experience what Wickham is all about, our event would need to be more “all-encompassing”. All aboard for a fun family festival at this year’s PSP Southampton Boat Show 01 July 2014 – Today plans are unveiled for the 46th annual PSP Southampton Boat Show. As one of Europe’s biggest maritime exhibitions, guests can explore the marine industry, see new boats for the first time and enjoy the friendly festival atmosphere from Friday 12 September until Sunday 21 September 2014. The PSP Southampton Boat Show is the perfect opportunity for the whole family to banish the back-toschool blues by getting together and enjoying a fun day out. This year’s event will completely transform Mayflower Park with an array of exciting attractions, all located in the purpose-built marina. For the first time in the history of the Show, visitors will be able to take to the air on the new PSP Southampton Boat Show Eye. Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week, 2 – 9 August 2014 A highlight on the south coast this summer will undoubtedly be one of Britain’s oldest and best-loved sporting events. Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week (2 -9 August 2014) is the largest sailing regatta of its kind in the world. Not only is the regatta one of the longest-running and most spectacular events in British sporting history, it is also free to the public attracting over 100,000 visitors each year. With up to 1,000 boats and 8,000 competitors ranging from Olympic and world class professionals to weekend sailors taking part there is plenty of action on the Solent which can be enjoyed from ashore or onboard spectator boat. The best location to watch the starts shoreside is the area between the Castle of the Royal Yacht Squadron and the cannons – beware of the loud bangs with each race being started under cannon fire! Here you can see who got the best start and which boats were over the line. You can also hear the race officers giving their countdowns and calling the starts from the Royal Yacht Squadron battlements. The racing can also be enjoyed from close quarters aboard a spectator boat with bookings possible via the event website. Discounts for family tickets apply. There are a raft of activities planned by the charity throughout the week designed to get as many people as possible actively engaged with the charity and take part in some fundraising at the same time. Plans include: • “Try Sailing” taster sessions throughout the Week for visitors to the regatta; • Gutter Boat Racing competition – everybody at the event can make their own gutter boats using any material they like, with the only specification that the gutter boat must fit within the dimensions of an A5 piece of paper, to fit in the guttering. A ‘Top Gear’ style scoreboard will keep a record of the leading participants; readymade gutter boats will also be provided for impromptu racing. Fareham Town FC Youth and Mini Soccer schools would like to invite children to join their ever growing seventeen teams with the Portsmouth Youth League. Starting from ages six up to sixteen, it’s a fantastic opportunity for children to have some fun or start their dream to become a footballer. Included in Fareham Town FC Mini Soccer are the Apollo Stars team, managed by Matthew Nash, who is a FA qualified coach with enhanced CRB, runs training sessions for children between the ages 9 and 12 years of age with additional special needs. These sessions take place on a Saturday morning from 10am to 11am in a safe and enclosed environment. Fareham Town Mini Soccer believes it is important to have football for all children, even those with additional special needs. It is beneficial for the children and the parents knowing they have a safe place where they will be looked after and ultimately have fun learning new skills. All their volunteering managers and coaches are FA qualified with CRB, mostly parents who have their own children joining in, so it’s a safe environment for your children with great community spirit. The club have taken the deliberate decision to concentrate on setting up a youth section and becoming a far more community orientated club than they have been in the past and have been awarded FA Charter Standard Status for both Youth and Adult sections. Bertie Stands Corrected
Although some are inclined to dismiss him as a mere idler, Bertram Wooster does have what you might call hidden depths. His is a mind open to new ideas. As the Good Book advises, “Whatsoever things are of good report, think on these things.” And so he does, often sharing his thoughts with others. “Jeeves,” I said, as the trusty fellow glided in with the breakfast tray, “I’ve been thinking.” “Indeed, sir?” “Yes, Jeeves, and my thoughts have not been of the happy variety, forcing me to conclude that I am a thoughtless blighter.” I paused. “I suppose that’s a sort of… What is it that that’s a sort of, Jeeves? I think it begins with a p.” “A paradox, sir.” “That’s the word. Thank you, Jeeves. Tell me, what do you know about this political correctness thingy?” “Only that it is a code of conduct with an alleged tendency to go mad, sir.” “Pay no heed to the mockers, Jeeves. It is about fairness and equality. Above all, it is about considering the other person’s feelings, and I’m afraid the Wooster performance in the PC department has been way below par. For instance, I’ve often called chaps at the Drones’ Club imbeciles, numbskulls, fatheads and such like. I now realize that to speak of the mentally challenged in this way is hurtful and unacceptable.” “I am sure that such badinage, coming from yourself, sir, would have been received by the other young gentlemen in a spirit of mutual camaraderie.” I shoved a forkful of succulent kippered herring into the oral cavity, pondering the while. “Are you saying, Jeeves, that a bunch of fatheads don’t mind being called fatheads, provided their accuser is a bona fide fathead himself?” “Any such implication would be an impertinence on my part, sir. I merely suggest that you are overestimating the sensitivity of your companions.” I took a sip of coffee and did some more pondering. Jeeves was probably right. You can’t have a massive brain like his and not be right most of the time. That

He is reluctant to embrace change, preferring to keep it at arm’s length for as long as possible. “With regard to my fellow Drones, Jeeves,” I said, “you may have a point. However, my flippant attitude towards the more seriously disturbed has been less excusable. I have even stooped to calling their devoted therapist, Sir Roderick Glossop, the eminent nerve specialist, a loony-doctor.” “Surely not to his face, sir?” “Good heavens, no! The very idea of going up to that glowering, bushy-browed old dispenser of the straitjacket and - dash it, there I go again! The road to political correctness contains many a pothole. Take women, Jeeves.” “Sir?” “Here too I have fallen short. I have spoken of fillies, cuties, bimbos and babes; even, I blush to add, of totty. I have laughed at mother-in-law jokes. Tell me, have you read Equality Must Always Come First by Jocasta Finkelstein? “No, sir.” His reply bucked me up no end. I’d actually read a book – an intellectual sort of book – that Jeeves hadn’t; because, you see, Jeeves reads loads of serious literature, even including philosophy. Only the other day he was speaking of some Teutonic cove named Nietzsche who wrote about a chap named Zarathustra who said things and, if I’ve remembered it correctly, went on to produce the Superman films. “So you’ve not read Ms Finkelstein’s book, then, Jeeves?” I said, rubbing it in a little. “No, sir. I did, however, read several reviews of the work. Miss Finkelstein, it seems, is a surprisingly clever young lady, though of a somewhat embittered disposition. An authoress who – “ I raised an open hand to interrupt him, causing the kipper-charged fork the hand had been holding to fall into the milk jug. I wasn’t going to let that faze me; after all, it’s not every day one gets the chance to put Jeeves right. “A surprisingly clever young lady! Ha! Ms Finkelstein would spurn the epithet.

Do I mean epithet, Jeeves, or is it a similar sort of word?” “No, sir, epithet is quite correct.” “Why should cleverness be surprising in a young woman? Endeavour not to be condescending, Jeeves.” “Very good, sir. I will fetch a fresh jug of milk and, with your permission, offer the contents of this one to the elderly lady in the ground floor apartment. She owns a cat – a large grey tabby. Kipper-flavoured milk could well prove a delicacy to the feline palate.” He wasn’t getting off that easily. “Wait. Nor, Jeeves, must we speak of authoresses; nor for that matter of actresses, comediennes, or poetesses. Ms Finkelstein – and please note the Ms – is very clear about that. Complete equality of the sexes is what she demands, and what I say is: Why not? After all, apart from… well… certain basic differences, men and women are basically the same, so to speak.” The finely chiselled features were respectfully indicating that the Wooster eloquence had failed to convince. “You are not convinced, Jeeves,” I said. “No, sir. Whilst there are forms of discrimination which can never be justified, it should always be remembered that the male and female psyches are endowed with somewhat different qualities.” “I hope you’re not going to speak of comparing apples with oranges, Jeeves. Ms Finkelstein refutes that old argument by reminding us that men and women are not items of fruit.” “Nevertheless, the analogy is not altogether inappropriate, sir. The less admirable aspects of the female temperament have been depicted – perhaps a trifle harshly – by Pope in his Epistle entitled, Of the Characters of Women, whereas their finer qualities – “ I raised a fork-free hand. (We Woosters do not make the same mistake twice.) “Dash it all, Jeeves, the Pope can hardly be regarded as the ultimate authority on the whole of womankind. Nuns, I grant you; female saints, certainly; but most women are neither nuns nor saints.”
“Very true, sir. However, I was not referring to His Holiness, but to Alexander Pope, the eighteenth-century poet.” “Pope… Poet… Let’s see… didn’t he write a thingy about someone doing something pretty beastly to a keyhole or something?” “I can only surmise, sir, that you are thinking of his mock-heroic poem The Rape of the Lock, which in fact tells of a young lady’s fury when one of her curled tresses is cut off and appropriated by an over-ardent admirer.” “Ah yes, it’s coming back to me now… And this Pope… wasn’t he a dwarfish little blighter? A… a vertically challenged person, I meant to say.” “Indeed, his height is reckoned to have been no more than four feet six inches, sir.” “So, not much in demand on the dance floor, I should imagine. Probably made him a bit of a mis… mis… What is the word I want, Jeeves - a fellow who can’t stand the female of the species at any price?” “A misogynist, sir. Will that be all, sir? I need to take the heather-mixture lounge suit and several other items to the drycleaning establishment.” “Not quite all, Jeeves, for we have now arrived at the crux of this discourse, so pray attend closely. The Finkelstein book has been lent to me by a Ms Harriet Paxton, whom I met at one of Aunt Agatha’s little get-togethers. A get-together I had tried to get out of, luckily without success, for Ms Paxton is as beautiful as she is brainy - blue eyes and a perfect profile. Today we meet for lunch, over which the book is due to be discussed in some detail. But, and here’s the rub, Jeeves: which one of us should pick up the restaurant bill?” The finely chiselled features now wore an expression of astonishment, mingled with disappointment. “Surely, sir, when a gentleman invites a lady to lunch he naturally assumes the role of host and therefore – “ “Yes of course he does. But I didn’t. Invite her to lunch. She invited me, and why not? Equality and all that. The question is: just how far do her notions of equality extend? If I pull out the wallet at the time of reckoning, will she accuse me of playing the dominant male? On the other hand, if I don’t, will she think me a shameless sponger? Separate bills?
Fine, if she suggests it, but what if she doesn’t? Can you advise, Jeeves?” “Does Miss Finkelstein offer no enlightenment, sir?” Now, rightly or wrongly, I had come to regard his continued use of “Miss” as an act of defiance, which explains why my reply was a trifle testy. “No, Jeeves, she does not. She is the theorist, the visionary; she deals with the broad outlines, so to speak. The minutiae, if minutiae is the word I want, she leaves to lesser mortals.” Tactless, I admit – sounded like I’d ranked the great brain of Jeeves below that of Finkelstein - but the fellow had annoyed me. “I regret that I have no suggestions to offer, sir.” His tone was decidedly chilly. “But this isn’t like you, Jeeves. You can think of no scheme or course of action?” My voice betrayed my disappointment, for I had been counting on the man. “No, sir.” After a longish pause, he added, “Might I take the liberty of asking, sir, whether you really enjoyed Miss Finkelstein’s book?” “It’s not exactly the sort of book one enjoys, Jeeves; it is an improving book, requiring effort on the part of the reader.” “Quite so, sir.” “Well, if you can’t help me,” I mused, “I shall try to have a discreet word with the head waiter. Assuming there is one, because no particular restaurant was mentioned; in fact, I rather got the impression that Ms Paxton regards food merely as a necessary fuel. Intellectuals are often like that - their thoughts are on higher things and that makes them… “ My voice trailed off because I suddenly had a brilliant idea. “I’ve got it, Jeeves! Listen: many’s the time you’ve rustled up a spot of lunch for myself and a pal. Perhaps restaurants could be avoided altogether if you would oblige me by – “ But he was already shaking his head. “I am afraid that would be out of the question, sir.” “Just plain wholesome fare, Jeeves. As I say, she is certainly no gourmet.” “No, sir. I should not feel comfortable serving lunch to an unchaperoned young lady in a bachelor apartment.” Well, you could have knocked Bertram down with a feather! I mean to say! Bally cheek, what? “But, Jeeves, you know me – the Code of the Woosters and all that. Let me tell you, a poetry-loving female
once called me “a very parfit gentil knight” – she was quoting Shakespeare, I think.” “Chaucer, sir. Your own character is, of course, not in question, but the young lady’s reputation could be harmed. People talk, sir, often with a lax regard to veracity.” A bit of a stick-in-the-mud did I say? Well, add hidebound and strait-laced for good measure! “Dash it all, Jeeves! Really, in this day and age! I mean to say! Surely a free-minded, free-spirited young woman should be free to… has every right to…” But I could see that it was no use. The finely chiselled f’s remained impassive. “Very well, Jeeves,” I said with icy dignity, “I suppose I shall just have to hope for the best, and if the worst should occur…” “The worst being that that young lady might not be inclined to take you out to lunch again, sir?” “Now look here, Jeeves, I don’t much care for the way you put that.” “Nor, I should imagine, would she be likely to prescribe any more books of an improving nature – a grim prospect indeed, sir.” He didn’t really think the prospect a grim one at all. He was employing… it’s a word something like iron... ironish? No… irony - yes, that’s the one – he was employing irony. Anyway, after mulling things over for a bit, I could see that perhaps he did have a point. All of Bertram’s past associations with brainy females had ended rather abruptly; usually, it has to be said, to the relief of both parties. The Finkelstein book had been pretty heavy going and, to tell the truth, I’d skipped quite a lot of it. Yes, Ms Paxton certainly possessed a lovely profile; but, when all’s said and done, does a chap look at a girl sideways all that often? Of course I admired her mind no end, but was there ever likely to be any true meeting of our minds? Could either mind undertake the necessary journey, so to speak? “Oh, well, I suppose even the worst wouldn’t be the end of the world, Jeeves.” “Scarcely that, sir.” “No, scarcely that… In fact, nowhere near that really… Did you say something about fresh milk?” “I will fetch it immediately, sir.”

Talisman Helps Celebrates The Strawberry Heritage of the Area The Talisman is a friendly pub-restaurant located on the edge of Southampton, owned by local brewer & pub operator ‘Hall & Woodhouse’ - one of the few remaining regional family brewers who have been brewing their awardwinning Badger beers in Dorset and offering warm hospitality in their pubs for over 230 years. The Talisman - named after a type of strawberry, popular in the 1970’s and one of the top 5 most beautifully flavoured strawberries of all time used to be a barn depot for the local strawberry trade, storing the fruit prior to it being dispatched across the country. The strawberry industry hit its peak in the 1920s, strawberries would be transported from the fields to barns and then onto waiting trains by horse and cart. One of the last reminders of this can be seen in a rail on the outside edge of what is now the pavement leading down the hill to the station. This was used to line up the wheels of the horse-drawn carts, so as to enable easy unloading of the carts. Today the Talisman has a nicely enclosed, well maintained south facing garden with lots of plants where guests can relax with a pint of Badger Beer or one of the tempting dishes from the pubs extensive menu. Inside you will find roaring log fires and oak beams which give a traditional English Inn atmosphere - cosy in the winter and fresh in the summer. Links back to the Talisman’s past can be seen in various locations throughout the pub; outside you will find the lyrics to “Strawberry Fields” by Lennon & McCartney written on the side of the pub and a picture of the Talisman Strawberry takes pride of place on the pubs swing sign. Inside a large painting depicting the strawberry farmers collecting the harvest takes pride of place. Perhaps aptly for a pub named after a variety of Strawberry the menu at the Talisman uses ingredients sourced from regional food partners, typically from family businesses like Hall & Woodhouse, who provide the pub
with quality ingredients that their team of talented chefs then use to create fresh, unpretentious, seasonal dishes. Although strawberries are still grown in the area, much of the land once used is now covered with houses. The history of the Strawberry farmers is still remembered though with the Talisman being one of numerous references to the strawberry trade in the area. It now boasts over one 100 members, and has a steady stream of new members joining all the time. All cars are welcome, and the club is keen to maintain
