THIS SUMMER, SLIP INTO SOMETHING A LITTLE LIGHTER - THOMAS MARRINGTON eschews Colour TO UNLOCK MONOCHROMATIC BLISS

In my daily life, I can be identified by scoping out a crowd and singling out a specific colour - black. Long the favourite of uniform dressers and those in the fashion and beauty industry, black is as easy to wear as it is to find in stores. It’s slimming, versatile, timeless and chic… and it conducts heat like nothing else you’ve ever worn. And herein lies The Summer Problem. Overheating is all too common a problem for me, even in the colder months, so when it comes to Summer I much prefer to opt for something more light reflecting. I need clothing that will bounce the heat off of me rather than SHIRT, trap it in, which creates the sort of black-hole H&M, heat vacuum that will have you gasping for £79.99 water as soon as you step out of the house in your signature (usually innocuous) black jeans and tee combination. Luckily, monochromatic looks are one of the easiest to achieve, especially in neutral tones like white, black, beige and grey. On the Spring/Summer 2019 runways, neutral monochrome ruled the roost; Dior, “monochromatic looks are one of the easiest to achieve, especially in neutral tones.”

Givenchy, Max Mara and Roksanda were but a few to debut block coloured looks. The best thing about wearing all white is that there are approximately a billion and one shades, spanning off-white to ecru and everything in between, all of which are still technically classes as white. And they are all intermixable! Pairing a brilliant pure white with a more natural stone shade is actually a fantastic way to create a layered look that is still super easy to put together, but looks far more sophisticated and tonally matched than trying to mix brighter shades. These offering’s from Zara and H&M are perfect to layer up on, and Zara’s inclusion of fine red stripes adds interest without overpowering the look.

Shoreline Church Turns Twenty

Shoreline Church was born in June 1999 after a group of people had been asked to start a new nondenominational church in the Stubbington area. It began meeting in a small venue on Hill Head seafront before moving to the function room of The Crofton pub â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a move which prompted interest including a feature on ITVâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Meridian Tonight. It relocated to its current home at Crofton Community Centre Youth Project building in September 2003. The church offers an informal style of worship and fellowship, and is friendly, warm and welcoming. Over the last twenty years the church has grown and the time has now come to move to a larger venue. On Sunday 28th April at 10.15am it will meet for the first time in the main hall at Stubbington Community Centre, Stubbington Lane, PO14 2PP, and everyone is welcome to join us for this celebration service, followed by refreshments. In days of declining church numbers the church fellowship is very excited over the plans for the future. We welcome people of all church backgrounds and none, and warmly invite you to visit at 10.15 each Sunday morning to share in all that is happening.

Early bird offers as Shieldhall announce 2019 sailing programme

SS Shieldhall launches her 2019 sailing programme at 8am on Friday 9th November 2018. The Southampton based heritage steamship will enjoy a busy programme with some 24 cruises, comprising a mixture of 2hr, 3hr, 4hr, ½ day and full day sailings. Highlights of the season include trips to see the Round the Island Race, the Fastnet Race, the Bournemouth Air Festival and the Cunard 3 Queens. The last occasion the 3 Queens were in port saw sellout Shieldhall trips, so early booking is recommended for the 2019 3 Queens sailings which take place on Sun 11 August. The Shieldhall programme has been arranged to appeal to a number of audiences, with the 2hr trips always popular with families who use the shorter docks excursions as a means of introducing children to life at sea. The afternoon 3hr ‘sailaway trips’ see Shieldhall sail down Southampton Water to the Isle of Wight, and on her return pass the outgoing cruise ships always the opportunity for Shieldhall to toot her whistle and play the ‘Shieldhall Organ.’ Longer trips include cruises to the Needles and the Eastern Solent, plus positioning cruises to Poole and trips to see the Cowes Fireworks and yacht races in the Solent. A Hampshire coach holiday company and its customers have raised ÂŁ2250 for a local charity. Bursledon-based Angela Holidays raised the funds over the festive period, including a raffle at their recent Reunion holiday at Warners Bembridge Coast Hotel with over 480 people in attendance. Proceeds are being donated to Revitalise Waterside House in Netley, a centre which provides respite breaks for disabled people and their families. The money raised will be used to build a decking area in their garden for guests to enjoy. HMS COLLINGWOOD HOSTS KNOCKOUT SPORTING EVENT HMS Collingwood played host recently to boxers battling for titles in the prestigious Eastern Region Development Boxing Championships. The evening was well attended by boxing fans who were treated to an evening of skillful and dedicated pugilism. There were seven bouts in total, two of which had been opened up to civilian boxers and two were for female boxers from the Royal Navy Royal Marines Boxing Championships. The bouts provide a proving ground for Royal Navy boxers who get the opportunity to fight others within the Service and

through bouts with the aim to ultimately move up to the Royal Navy Championships. This is the first time we’ve held this at HMS Collingwood but hopefully it’ll become an annual event.” The successful evening crowned months of effort from LPT Stocker who is now free to concentrate on upcoming sporting events including continuing to prepare HMS Collingwood boxers for the rest of the season. He said, “It was very intense and hard work, but I have a great team around me here at HMS Collingwood who all pulled together to get the job done.”

CADET FORCES TEAM UP TO TACKLE NAVY ROPE CHALLENGE

Cadets work together to cross one of the obstacles HMS Collingwood recently played host to nearly eighty cadets from two Combined Cadet Forces who took advantage of some of the excellent facilities at the Base. The cadets, from St John’s School in Leatherhead and Gravesend Grammar School traveled to the Royal Naval Leadership Academy at HMS Collingwood where instructors tested their mettle on the Academy’s Low Ropes Course. The course is skilfully designed to teach groups positive communication and the ability to both fit into and lead a successful team. The Cadets split into groups to tackle different obstacles on the course, including the “Spider’s Web” where they must traverse a series of ropes without touching them, relying on team members to support them as they go.

Another challenge involves swinging across a “chasm” on a rope which, again, cannot be achieved without working closely as a team. This was Cadet Izzy Kuhle’s first visit to Collingwood and she described her feelings at first seeing the Low Ropes course. She said, “We got quite scared when we first saw it, but then we thought ‘we’re in the Navy now!’ We’re definitely able to transfer the skills we’ve learnt here to the classroom when we get back and here you learn more about what the Navy does and its core values.” In contrast, this was Cadet Luke Horner-Long’s second visit to HMS Collingwood and he’d experienced the Low Ropes challenge before. He said, “The Low Ropes are about team-building and having fun with your friends. You can work out who’s best at each task and who’s best to take command of the group.” Instructors are on hand to mentor and supervise the Cadets, but they are encouraged to find their way round the Course themselves, teaching and supporting each other and applying the principles of leadership they’ve been taught.

HMS COLLINGWOOD SAILOR TACKLES FATHER IN RETURN TO OLD CLUB

Seventeen-year old Able Seaman Brodie Lee-Butler, who is currently undergoing Phase 2 training at HMS Collingwood in Fareham, recently travelled back to his home town of Wigan with his new team the Royal Navy Rugby League (RNRL). They were to go head-to-head with local team Ince Rose Bridge, a team Brodie knows well as it is the team he played for before joining the Royal Navy just before Christmas. Not only that, but Brodie’s dad Martin still plays for Ince Rose Bridge and would be lining up against him from the second row! AB Brodie Lee-Butler said, “It was a great experience because not many people can play against their dad at such a high level of Rugby League. It was also made special by making my Royal Navy debut was against my former club, so all my mates was wanting a shot at me… which was great fun. I also feel that joining the Royal Navy has been the best choice I could have made, even though I am still in training and don’t have too much experience. I hope to have a long, successful career in the Royal Navy and with Rugby League and to keep playing to the highest possible standard”. Ince Rose Bridge have kindly provided a new shield, the Brodie Lee-Butler Trophy, to be played for annually. Bearing the name of AB LeeButler, it recognises his life-long association with the club and commemorates the unique time he played against his dad across a muddy Wigan rugby pitch! CEMAST AND HMS COLLINGWOOD CEMENT NAVAL ENGINEERING CAREERS PARTNERSHIP Fareham College, the TES UK College of the Year, and the UK’s Royal Navy’s largest training establishment HMS Collingwood, have today officially put pen to paper on a collaborative initiative aimed at supporting local students looking to enter the Royal Navy as an engineer. HMS Collingwood is the home of the Royal Navy’s Maritime Warfare School with the responsibility for all Weapon Engineering training in the Royal Navy. The partnership was cemented at a plaque unveiling ceremony held at the College’s Centre of Excellence in Engineering, Manufacturing and Advanced Skills Training (CEMAST), based on the site of the former HMS Daedalus. As a part of the partnership arrangement, HMS Collingwood will provide the College with a ‘cross-rank’ team to deliver advice, support and guidance to those students interested in becoming a Royal Navy engineer. Attending the ceremony were students, engineering apprentices and teaching staff from the College, as well as representatives from HMS Collingwood, including Captain Rob Vitali RN, the Commanding Officer of the training school and three Royal Navy Leading Engineering Technicians. The plaque will be added to CEMAST’s ‘employer partnership wall’, which displays plaques representing organisations that work with the College to support young people in many engineering and manufacturing disciplines. Captain Rob Vitali RN, said, “I am delighted we can now begin this exciting partnership with Fareham College which has an excellent reputation for delivering engineering training. From my first visit to CEMAST in September 2018, I have been impressed by the quality of the training. It is my hope that through this new partnership we can provide students

INSPIRATIONAL CHAIR VISITS HMS COLLINGWOOD Naval Servicewomen visit schools to talk about their Commander Rachel Smallwood recently visited HMS careers and the opportunities working for the Royal Collingwood ahead of International Women’s Day in her Navy can bring. Her ultimate aim is to increase the capacity as new Chair of the Naval Servicewomen’s Network. Preparing to speak to a meeting of Collingwood’s number of women serving which, from the disbanding of the WRNS in 1993 has never increased Servicewomen, Rachel was returning to the site of past much beyond 10%. The vast majority of professional organisations where women are in a minority have a professional women’s network. New recruits during Exercise First Waves and Summer Camp in Devon Are you looking for a new challenge? Then maybe the Royal Navy Volunteer Cadet Corps (VCC) is the place for you! The VCC is a uniformed and disciplined cadet organisation sponsored and part-funded by the Ministry of Defence. The aim is to help boys and girls develop into responsible members of society, using the traditions and practices of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines to achieve this. Chief Petty Officer Adam Hearn is the Officer Commanding the HMS Collingwood unit. He said “Our cadets can choose to be either a Royal Naval Cadet or a Royal Marines Cadet depending on which unit they wish to join. We are not part of the Sea Cadet Corps although we share common aims. The VCC is headquartered in Portsmouth and has units at HMS Excellent, HMS Collingwood, HMS Sultan, RM Stonehouse, Commando Training Centre, Lympstone and RM Condor, Arbroath.” Whilst there are some differences across the units, generally each one will induct new recruits twice a year. They will undergo basic training for around 4 to 5 months before ‘Passing Out’ in front of family and friends at a ceremonial parade. The Inspecting Officer is usually a senior Royal Navy or Royal Marines officer, and cadets are presented with their caps to signify their achievement. Adam went on to say “After their Pass Out the new recruits join general duties training or, if their unit has a band, they can join musical training. Our training syllabus includes a wide range of fun and challenging activities including marksmanship, campcraft, skill at arms, first aid and navigation. We also introduce other activities such as weekend exercises, adventure training, display teams, inter-unit competitions, ceremonial parades and external visits.

Cadets progress through the VCC by moving from one training phase to another and, should they pass some basic assessments at the end of each training year, they can attend a Command Course to win promotion.” All of the cadets have the opportunity to rise through the ranks, with the rank of Warrant Officer being achievable for any cadet who shows the right aptitude and effort. The activities are not just geared towards personal development but are also fun, for example target shooting and swimming sessions, and of course cadets also make lifelong friends. The VCC is run by adult volunteers, some of whom are serving or former serving personnel. Our volunteers receive no pay whatsoever, as the

On the range of activities available, Adam said “We have recently completed ‘Exercise First Waves’ where our latest new recruits are put to the test and practice all their newly learnt field craft skills in a testing environment. Culmination of the weekend sees them hand in their new recruit epaulettes and be awarded with ‘Royal Naval Cadet’ signifying the successful completion of their basic training.” Looking ahead to the summer, over 90 RNVCC cadets are off to the Isle of Wight for a week-long camp where a mixture of adventurous training and military exercises will take place, giving cadets a challenge, but also fun and long lasting memories. The VCC accepts boys and girls from 9 to 16 who can stay in the VCC until aged 18. Having turned 18 some cadets are invited to remain as adult volunteers. Come meet the challenge! Red Funnel has helped to transport two former circus lions to their new forever home in the Isle of Wight Zoo.

Five-year-old brothers Vigo and Kumba were previously being held at a rescue centre in Alicante, but have today reached their final place of sanctuary on the Island, following a 1,300-mile journey by road, Eurotunnel and Red Funnel ferry. Before their rescue, the lions spent their lives in small compartments on a lorry, let out only when forced to perform as part of a circus act. Fran Collins, CEO of Red Funnel, said: “We are delighted to have been part of this heartwarming story, and to help Vigo and Kumba reach their new home at Isle of Wight Zoo.”

Computer Know How! Computer Know How! – Has your email account been compromised? How to stay secure online… . In this edition of Computer Know How: 5th February 2019 was Safer Internet Day, but just how safe are you? We show you a way to check if your details have already been compromised and provide some advice on staying safer while you are online.

Is your e-mail address compromised? The word “pwn” is a slang term derived from the verb “own”, which means "to compromise or take control, specifically of another computer or application." The website https://haveibeenpwned.com (HIBP) is a trusted location where you can check to see if your email address and possibly your password has been compromised by any of several large-scale data breaches. If your address does appear, it potentially exposes you as a target for malicious communications that may lead to a more severe problem. If the breach you appear in is for a specific site, such as Adobe or LinkedIn, you should ensure your password is updated. While you’re here, register for notifications should your e-mail address appear in any future breach.

Google Password Check-up Google have created a Chrome Extension called Password Check-up. After it is installed, whenever you sign in to a site, Password Check-up will trigger a warning if the username and password you use is one of over 4 billion credentials that Google knows to be unsafe. If Password Check-up lets you know that a password you use is unsafe, you are advised to sign in with the unsafe password and create a new strong password. https://goo.gl/t25VAS

Google Password Alert Google have created a Chrome Extension that will alert you if you enter your Google Account password into a non-Google site. Google Chrome Password Manager Google Chrome has a built-in password manager that is active by default (Settings => Passwords => Offer to save passwords). You’ll be prompted to save your password when you sign in to sites the first time, and the fields will be filled in automatically on subsequent accesses. If you choose to enable synchronisation across platforms, the information is encrypted and stored in Google cloud. The synchronisation includes bookmarks and history as well as passwords. You can create an additional layer of privacy by creating a unique passphrase. If you need something that works outside of Chrome, here are a couple of dedicated, stand-alone Password Managers.

Troy Hunt from the haveibeenpwned site has partnered with 1password, a multi-platform password manager. Your logins and private documents are securely stored in your password vault, and are accessible on all devices, browsers and operating systems. LastPass

LastPass also works across multiple platforms (Windows, iOS, Android) and has plug-ins for most of the common Web Browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer). Like 1Password, you use a master password which is never stored on a computer (so is never at risk), to access an encrypted database where all your password data is stored. Each time you logon to a site, LastPass can store the credentials and recall them on future accesses. Moreover, it can generate and remember strong passwords for you. LastPass encrypted data storage is as safe as it is possible to get, and includes the option to implement 2-factor authentication. LastPass is free, but there is also a Premium edition with extra features for £2.33 per month, and a Families edition for up to 6 users for £3.10 www.lastpass.com

Feeling Green – the Story of Topiary As the old saying goes, ‘Everything changes and yet stays the same’ and so it is as in our gardens. The word on the garden path is that topiary is back in fashion. Topiary has long had a chequered past and has often been held in contempt by the ‘landscaping school’. So it is interesting to witness its revival and listen to garden designers suddenly championing its cause. Box and yew are still amongst the most popular choices for clipping into shapes and for providing evergreen interest all year round. Today, we also hear that beech and hornbeam is now popular for more unusual and colourful displays, particularly during the autumn months.

Snip… Snip… Snip…. It does require patience to grow and shape your own topiary, particularly if you chose box as it is very slow growing. However, for anyone looking for something to give instant structure and form, plenty of local nurseries and garden centres stock interesting 28

and varied mature topiary in all shapes and sizes. Begin by leaving your chosen topiary in its pot and experimenting with clipping its form for a couple of years until you gain your confidence. The trick is not to take it too seriously and treat it as a little bit of fun.

Be Inspired For inspiration, you can visit Stansted House near Rowlands Castle where the walled garden features some very fine pieces of formal topiary. Here you can witness how topiary helps to soften and shape an area of hard landscaping. As the original ancient art of topiary often depicted hunting scenes, you may also like to know that Stansted House begun life as a hunting lodge 800 years ago. As mentioned earlier, everything changes - yet stays the same.

TITCHFIELD GOES NATIONAL After their success in 2018 when the Titchfield in Bloom Team led the village to Gold and became the overall Gold winners in the South & South East this year the village of Titchfield will be judged twice. The Team were informed by the Royal Horticultural Society that they would be the large village representing the South & South East in the National in Bloom competition â&#x20AC;&#x201C; quite an achievement. In July the village will be judged by the South & South East judges and later by the R.H.S National judges. The other 5 large villages in the National competition are located in Scotland, Ulster, Yorkshire, the North East and South West. The judges will be awarding marks on environmental protection and conservation

Most people get their Parkinson’s diagnosis when their symptoms have become obviously noticeable and one or more aspects of movement has been affected. Usually symptoms signiﬁcantly improve when one starts to take medication. What role, if any, does engaging in physical activity and/or exercises play in improving the Parkinson’s symptoms? Putting the Community back in Pharmacy Everetts Titchfield celebrated the opening of their new look store in March with Wave 105’s Andy Jackson cutting the ribbon and the opportunity for customers to come and have a look at the new interior and enter the prize draw. The refurbishment demonstrates Everetts’ commitment to invest in the community, enabling them to improve their offering to customers. The 2 new consultation rooms are fully equipped with sinks and sound proof walls, the size of the dispensary has been increased and the layout improved creating a more efficient, productive environment where more services are able to be offered.The staff at Everetts Titchfield have worked hard to achieve Healthy Living Pharmacy status. Cwtch Education is a charity dedicated to educating children, and those who care for them, about how to keep safe online and in relationships; including cyberbullying, self-esteem, social media use, exploitation and gaming.

Social Media: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly! There is no doubting that social media is a fantastic resource and whether we use it for staying in touch with our friends and family, arranging social events, finding out information, helping good causes, playing games or watching funny videos most us couldn’t imagine life without it. To young people it’s like the air they breathe. If you’ve been around a teenager when there’s no internet, you’ll understand! As a charity that visits schools regularly, we have seen a huge increase in the prevalence of mental health worries such as anxiety, depression, self-harm, eating disorders and suicide. We ask students what affects their mental well-being and their initial response is always the same…social media. We research how long they spend on their devices and our findings support the published average statistic of about 3 hours per day. We found a definite gender divide with more girls using social media for keeping up with what their friends (and celebrities) are doing, for advice on what to buy and wear, how to look and the latest trends. Boys generally spend a larger proportion of their time on games and videos. However, they all agree that the more time spent on social media the more it influenced their decisions and how they felt about 36

themselves; that it affected their sleeping, caused problems with relationships and friendships including issues with cyberbullying and many of them felt addicted or controlled by it. The group Anxiety UK investigated this and found evidence of social media feeding anxiety and increasing feelings of inadequacy. Something as simple as seeing their friend’s new trainers or photos of a lovely holiday or a group of their friends on a night out can result in FOMO (Fear of missing out) They described it as a "compare and despair" attitude. In addition to this, social media is full of heavily photoshopped and staged photos. This leaves many young people feeling like they are not good enough. A constant striving for unattainable perfection can contribute to issues such as eating disorders, body dysmorphia and self-harm.

A child suffering the stress of social media When they post photos of themselves, they often receive negative comments from people who are imitating the body shaming culture that they see from the media.

Cyberbullying includes sending, posting, or sharing negative, harmful, false, or mean content and can include sharing private information about someone causing embarrassment or humiliation. This causes unbelievable anxiety and often teenagers feel like they have to deal with it alone. Most childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s charities agree that about 70% of young people have experienced cyber bullying at some point with about a third of young people saying they experience cyber bullying regularly. In a Childnet International 2018 survey 23% of UK respondents aged 13-17 years also said they received unwanted sexual messages and images, with girls being significantly more likely to experience this (31%) compared to boys (11%).

It is very easy to think that the mental health issues associated with social media is a problem teenagers face but even as adults we are often affected by these issues and could probably benefit from taking some of this advice ourselves.

So how can we encourage our children to make healthy decisions regarding social media? TURN off! Discuss with your family about trialing a digital detox, maybe try being tech free at particular times of the day or during certain family activities, like meal times. If night time phone checking is an issue, discuss keeping their phone in your room (and buy them an alarm clock!) TAKE a reality check! Ask them to assess their own usage (a bit like doing a food diary) or use an app like Screentime, OffTime or Moment and take regular screen breaks; not just for the physical benefits, but to keep a grasp on the real world. Teach them that life is a balance; get them outside, meet up with people, join a club; model how different activities help you to stay happy and healthy. TALK to them! Discuss the issues of FOMO, Fake media, filters, ask them to tell you about what they see. Make sure your teenagers know they can come to you about anything, that you wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t judge, will support them and be able to point them in the direction of help if they need it. contactus@loopmagazine.net

Liz has 15 years experience of Director-level nursing positions in both acute and integrated trusts, most recently at University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust where she has been Chief Nurse since 2009. Volunteers from the highly successful Meon Valley Heartstart Scheme attended the Mayor of Winchester’s Community Awards Presentation at the end of March to receive the Award. Presented by Mayor of Winchester, Cllr Frank Pearson, the award recognizes individuals and groups who undertake tremendous work across the Winchester district on behalf of their fellow citizens. Meon Valley Heartstart Scheme Coordinator, David Williamson, pictured receiving the award from the Mayor said “We are thrilled to receive this recognition. In 2018 we trained more than 4000 people across southern Hampshire – all of this training, and the management and administration of it, is all provided by volunteers. We have no paid staff. Our 20 or so volunteers give of their own free time with great enthusiasm and commitment to make sure that there is an increasing number of people in our community who can save a life in an emergency. The reward is mainly in knowing that there are people out there who know what to do if they come across a medical emergency; but receiving recognition such as this really is the icing on the cake for us all.”

The aim of the Friends is to raise money which will be used to provide facilities and equipment not provided by the NHS but which will enhance the quality of service provided by the staff, and improving the experience of patients. To date we’ve provided equipment for the Physiotherapy and Xray departments, medical equipment for the Same Day Access Service plus fans, watercoolers and televisions for the benefit of patients and staff. At the present time we are actively fund raising for the Renal Dialysis Home Training Unit which we are hoping will be opened in the next couple of months. We also have a team of volunteers who assist with meeting and greeting, and until recently manning the phone booking service for the Phlebotomy Department. One of our many success stories is the Memory Group which was started a couple of years ago. Anyone with a dementia related condition can attend with their carer at either of the groups which are held Monday mornings and afternoons. These sessions are very informal with chat and a cup of tea.

AverageGeoff - Get scared! Its easy to sit in a little box and be comfortable. It's easy to avoid any thing that scared us or makes us fear consequences. Fear is a natural human reaction, it's your body trying to make sure you survive. But what is it your scared of is it life or death? Are the potential consequences genuinely serious or potentially just a fear of what others think. You could be scared of public speaking and your perceived fear of getting it wrong could lead embarrassment. Many years ago, a failure to perform in a tribe could have meant banishment that could have meant certain death. But we don't live in a time of scarce resources and harsh conditions anymore and if it doesn't go completely to plan, it's unlikely to end with you foraging alone in the wilderness! Your fear could be of a physical challenge or fear of change. But, a bit of fear is great. A little fear keeps you sharp and motivated. Believe it or not, I'm not naturally confident in speaking to large groups of my peers...truth be told it scares the conkers out of me. But I try to face that fear in order to grow. So whether it's physical or mental, go face a new challenge, get scared, get uncomfortable and get out of your comfort zone and live!!!

Perform 10 repetitions of each movement with minimal rest between movements. Rest for 2 minutes between rounds and repeat for 3-5 rounds. Alternate chest press (each side) Get into a bench press position on a flat bench plant your feet wide to create a strong base. Press one dumbbell up, keeping your body tensed and not rocking. Fight against rotating your body. Lower down and repeat the other side. That's one rep.

Alternate chest press demonstration One arm row (each side) Place your left knee and left hand on a bench and plant you right foot in a stable position. Keep you back neutral and hold the dumbbell in your right hand. Row it up to your chest making sure not to jerk or rotate. Control the weight in the way down. Complete the 10 reps and switch to the other side.

Thai butternut soup (serves 4) Spring is peeking around the corner but those chilly and rainy days do have a habit of sneaking up on us. Warm your cockles with this fragrant and satisfying Thai style soup that's ridiculously easy to make. 1 large butternut squash 1 litre vegetable stock 3 cloves garlic, crushed 1 bunch of coriander 1 red chilli, chopped (adjust to your taste) 1 stalk of lemongrass, chopped or 1 tbsp puree. 1 tbsp ginger, chopped (fresh or puree is fine) Toasted almond flakes and coriander to serve. Start off by peeling the squash and cutting it into 1 inch chunks. Boil the kettle and make up your stock. Fling the squash in a pan with the stock and bring to a low boil. Put the garlic, chilli, lemongrass and ginger in a pan with a little oil on a medium heat for about a minute to bring out the flavours. Tip those into your pan of squash. Continue to cook for about 20 minutes until the squash is tender. Turn off the heat, Chuck in the coriander and use a hand blender to blitz into soup.Top with some toasted almond flakes and chopped coriander...wallop!!! Alternate Press (each side) Hold the dumbbells in the start position above. Tense your glutes and core and press one weight overhead, making sure to keep a neutral spine and not to lean or laterally arch. Repeat on the other side for one rep.

The research also revealed that 77 per cent of children aged five agreed that they have the power to change the world. However, this belief diminishes with age, with only 53 per cent of children aged 13 believing this to be true. In addition, 40 per cent of all children feel that adults don’t listen to their ideas enough. Interestingly over 90 per cent wishing they could invent something to make the world a better place. When it comes to positive roles models, the research revealed that girls are twice as likely to be inspired by women, then by men. In answer to where children find their information about issues facing the world today, school is named the number one source (49 per cent), followed by their parents (42 per cent), then online channels such as YouTube (27 per cent). But hundreds of people regularly go down to their local sailing club every month across the south, sailing small sailboats or windsurfing with friends -just loving the buzz of being on the water. You and your family could be out there with them. Have you ever considered what might be possible onthe-water? With such a fantastic playground right on our doorstep, now’s your chance! More than 350 venues around the UK will be offering free or low cost sailing and windsurfing taster sessions at RYA Push the Boat Out open days this May. Something for everyone The Czura family went along to Lee on Solent Sailing Club (LOSSC)in 2017, looking for something to do together as a family. Mum, Lucy was out walking their dog when she saw the banner inviting newcomers to come and try sailing.“ Initially we thought it would be a good opportunity to give the boys a chance to ‘have a go’ and possibly something my husband, Peter and I could do together once the kids had all grown up. The club was so friendly and welcoming, we’ve all become involved and it’s now something we can all do together,” explains Lucy. Peter had sailed when he was younger, but the family had always assumed it would be too difficult and too expensive to join a sailing club. They went along with their three boys(aged 8, 10 and 14),who took to sailing like ducks to water, and have since become active members of the kids Saturday morning ‘Gybe Club’. Lucy and Peter have also become fully integrated members, with Lucy volunteering in the Gybe club and Peter completing his RYA Powerboat Level 2 qualification and providing safety boat cover. Both parents have learnt to sail through training put on by LOSSC and have achieved their RYA Dinghy Level 2 qualifications. “I’m enjoying continuing to learn, I’d love to be better (at sailing) and keep progressing–the aim is to spend more time out sailing all together. It can be daunting as an adult trying something new for the first time, but everyone at the club has been so positive and encouraging. It’s a really welcoming environment to just get involved and have a go,” said Lucy. “Joining the club and learning to sail has been an investment in our family time. Nearly everything else we do is as individuals and this is something we can all do together. For the boys it’s been amazing, they get so much independence out on the water and the character benefits are huge having to look after the boat, make sensible decisions, think of other people and now that they’re racing it’s added another element for them. They are learning so many things and developing skills that are really going to benefit them in all walks of life.”

My name is Louis Suffill. I’m 21 years old and I am currently studying Multimedia Journalism at Southampton Solent University. My main passion is music. When I’m not at uni I can be found either playing guitar or listening to music or editing photos of gigs I’ve been to. I only really stated to take an interest in music after the first time I listened to The Sgt Pepper album by The Beatles when I was 12.

After that I started listening to all kinds of music, I could get my hands on. My favourite genre is punk rock and my favourite bands are My Chemical Romance, The Cure, Greedy and Creeper. I recently started a punk band with some friends and I am also looking to start an acoustic project. I’ve always been fascinated by how theatrical bands can be onstage and so this is what started an interest in photography of bands for me. I think it’s important to capture moments in photos because when I think back to 12-year-old me I couldn’t afford to go and see the bands I liked and so photos were the best thing I had so I think it’s important to take photos of musicians and gigs.

Wilko Johnson Rocks Southampton Music Venue On the 9th of March Wilko Johnson took to the stage at Southampton Engine Rooms and he showed that he could still rock. At the age of 71 Wilko showed that he can still rock and has shown no signs of slowing down. The music industry has a lot to thank Wilko for as he was part of the punk rock movement. This was when he was in Dr Feelgood in the 70’s. Since then he has been in other bands most notably Ian Dury and the Blockheads and he even collaborated with lead singer of The Who Roger Daltery. After playing a sold out show at The Royal Albert Hall in celebration of his 70th birthday Then Engine Rooms did feel like a step down for somebody of Wilko’s calibre yet he was there and he still gave it his all. Entering the stage with his band in toe you could tell you were in for something special. Dressed head to toe in black this is Wilko’s iconic and sleek style. Fans were glad to see him still using his iconic guitar. A black Fender Telecaster with a red pickguard further showing off his style. Wilko used his unique playing style throughout the show, not using a pick and relying solely on fingerstyle like he always has. This gives him the chance to play both lead guitar and rhythm guitar at the same time which is good as his band is now a three-piece with ex-blockheads bass player Norman Watt-Roy and Dylan Howe on drums. Wilko certainly has had an impressive career.

He has been in a number of bands and has beaten cancer. He was diagnosed back in January 2013 with late pancreatic cancer. Upon being told he had 9 or 10 months left he did a farewell tour and recorded a final album called Going Home. He underwent an operation to have the tumour removed and after 11 hours the operation was a success. He said that he was coming to terms with the fact that his death is not imminent and he is going to live. It was clear to see this during the show as he strode around the stage making use of all the space he had. He also showed of jerky movements like he used to and the duckwalk he became known for. He even played the guitar behind his head which I can tell you from experience is not an easy this to do. He played the famous tracks but also some of the lesser known stuff. This is good when artists do this. Obviously, you want to here the famous ones but musicians have so much to give and a lot of it is never heard because they are only interested in playing the ones everyone knows so I was glad the Wilko Johnson was not like this. With support from Glen Tillbrook from Squeeze it was great night. You can catch Wilko at events all across the country throughout April.

Southampton-grown band Slackrr are quickly becoming one of the most talked about bands on the underground music scene. Playing their own brand of pop-punk and emo rock they have gained a huge fanbase having only been a band for a short amount of time. Recently I caught up with lead singer and guitarist Scotty and bass player Cait to talk about Slackrr and all things music.

Scotty, Cait thanks for coming in today. Scotty: No worries, thanks for having us. So, when did you guys start? Scotty: November 2017 was when the first single was released and that was basically when we started with me and a couple other guys, just friends of mine we were just jamming and playing and released the first single and it was picked up by BBC introducing. So, loads of gigs starting coming in and tours and the other guys didn’t really want to go out on tours and stuff. Cait had been coming to see us play a couple of times at a few shows so quickly joined the band after that and that’s how it all kicked off around that time.

Cait: I remember getting a shuffle iPod when I was really little, you can’t have the screen on it so you are just given music basically that you would listen to and it was bands like Jimmy Eat World, Paramore all that kind of stuff I got into through that. So classic pop punk? Cait: Yeah definitely for me How many shows have you guys played? Scotty: Since we started gigging, management told us about 125. We played Salisbury last night and we’ve just been up north and played Leeds, Doncaster, Sheffield and Swansea. So yeah somewhere around there. In 2018 we did just about 100 shows so yeah.So how do you think you’ve gained all this success and all these fans through only being a band for a short time? Scotty: A lot of the time I think we got lucky through BBC introducing they liked the first single. It was me I did a lot of it I needed a band to go around with. So obviously Cait was a friend Connor the drummer is a buddy and that helped because that got it out to people just because they put in on the upload. And then they played subsequent singles after that, we’ve been on the Mike James rock shows that just bought attention to us and people just booked us from there. We just been really lucky with it. Working really hard and any gigs that come up we travel everywhere and do it and just really keep the grind going would be one of the reasons, I think, I hope ha ha. Ok, so where is your favourite place to play? Scotty: Uhhh Southampton of course Hometown shows! Scotty: Hometown shows ha ha there are so many places, every place is different it’s really fun up north everyone’s really friendly, but it’s always good to come back home. Ok, thank you very much for coming into the studio with me today and good luck with your upcoming shows. Scotty: Cheers Slackrr will be on tour all throughout April and May. Scotty: Well my dad always liked Status Quo which was quite funny because I was always hearing Status Quo records which was not an influence. More of a guilty pleasure is suppose. A lot of it for me the punk stuff I got into was through friends that were older and already I the music scene because I like rock music, I liked guitarists that were playing when I was really young and just going to gigs. Just local gigs from the age of like 13 or something sneaking into venues catching bands just really liking music. And a lot of the older guys you met would say “Have you seen this band” and that’s how I got into the punk and pop punk and grunge stuff. But that was me. contactus@loopmagazine.net

FRANK TURNER TO HEADLINE WICKHAM FESTIVAL Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls have been confirmed as the big Saturday night headline act for Wickham Festival. It is a major coup for organisers who have finally secured the Wessex Boy for what is effectively a hometown gig. Turner, who grew up in Winchester, is now one of the biggest names on the rock circuit having played at the Opening Ceremony for the London 2012 Olympics as well as selling out some of the biggest arenas in the country. One of the hardest-working artists around with more than 2,300 gigs to his name, he recently concluded a sell-out nationwide tour including the 6,000capacity Bournemouth International Centre and his appearance at Wickham has already sent ticket sales soaring. Organiser Peter Chegwyn said: “We are so thrilled to have got Frank Turner at long last; we have been chasing him for years but the dates never quite matched. We are delighted that he is able to slot us in between festivals in Austria and Slovenia and I know he will be hugely popular with our fans. He is an incredible live act. “His concert in Bournemouth was sensational with many there saying it was the best they had ever seen him and I know our crowd are in for an amazing night.” Turner completes a stellar line-up which kicks off in style on Thursday August 1 with Judy Collins and Rock and Roll double Hall of Famer Graham Nash on one main stage and the Proclaimers and Skinny Lister on the other. Wickham favourites Steve Knightley and John Jones will also be performing. The Friday sees Level 42 top the bill alongside Dreadzone, top American guitarist Stanley Jordan, Kathryn Tickell and the Spooky Men’s Chorale. Saturday night will be party night with Frank Turner, the Men They Couldn’t Hang, the Afro Celt Sound System Grace Petrie, Cara Dillon and many more. And there will be a fantastic finale on the Sunday with Holywood legend Kiefer Sutherland bringing his band to join the Alabama 3 on one stage with Ralph McTell, Gilbert O’Sullivan, Lucinda Williams and Lindisfarne. Chegwyn added: “The line-up is pretty well finished now; I’m not sure we could fit any more superstars in! This is definitely the strongest array of artists we have ever had. It is just as well we have extended the Village Stage to give it equal billing with the Valley Stage.“

HMS COLLINGWOOD OPENS ITS GATES FOR FUN FILLED DAY FEATURING THE ROYAL NAVY AND ROYAL MARINES CHARITY FIELD GUN COMPETITION On Saturday 1 June 2019 a fantastic event will take place at HMS Collingwood, Fareham, Hampshire, when the establishment opens its gates for the annual Open Day featuring the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) Field Gun Competition. The Field Gun Competition will feature crews from across the UK and as far afield as Gibraltar competing for the coveted Brickwoods Trophy. The competition is fast and furious and requires 18-man teams to run, dismantle, reassemble and fire the gun in the shortest possible time. Strength, stamina, and team work are essential in this challenge. The selected crew members will begin training in March. During the Open Day there will be attractions, entertainment and displays designed to capture the imagination of everyone. There will be an Interactive Zone includes hands-on activities, The Rockets Children's Motorcycle Display Team, and the high rope challenge. Attractions for our younger guests can be found in the Toddler Zone, whilst the older children can enjoy the FREE FUN FAIR. Parts of the base are open to visitors, allowing them to see the Royal Navyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s training equipment and experience some training first hand, navigating a ship into harbour on our Warship Bridge Simulator. The gates will open at 0930. A FREE BUS SERVICE will run twice per hour from Fareham and Gosport and back. Once the entrance fee is paid all entertainment and attractions are free of charge. SPECTACULAR ENTERTAINMENT AT THE HMS SULTAN SUMMER SHOW 2019 Bolddog Lings Freestyle Motorcross Display Team will be wowing crowds across the Father’s Day weekend with their amazing mid-air stunts at the HMS Sultan Summer Show 2019. Taking place on Saturday 15 & Sunday 16 June, the Show will feature a Main Arena packed with live entertainment, a large-scale Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) area where the subjects come to life, a Steam Fayre and a kid’s zone crammed full of free activities. In addition, for a very reasonable fee, visitors can ride on the Mayhem Monster Truck, race on mini quad bikes or visit the huge fun fair. The event also plans to offer a food fayre offering a wide variety of fresh and interesting produce and a road of ‘street food’ with flavours from around the world. Community is at the heart of the HMS Sultan Summer Show and the event promises to provide every visitor with an affordable day of exceptional entertainment. What’s more, as a not for profit event, the Show also ploughs back much needed funds into Service and Local Charities and organisations. Gates will open at 10am both days, with tickets available at £25 family (2 Adults & 2 Children*), Adult £10, OAP/Disabled £6, Child £5 (5-14) with under 5s free.
