Portsmouth celebrates RS Aqua relocating to the region

RS Aqua is part of the marine science technology space, one of the key priority sectors identified for funding by the LEP. The move is a coup for the region as maritime industries are on a significant growth trajectory, and RS Aqua has grown 85% in revenue in the past three years. By relocating from North Hampshire to the Solent region, not only is the business closer to relevant supply chains and to its customers, it contributes to the area's overall economic productivity.
50 years of Fareham Probus How do you celebrate a big birthday? Well, with lots of friends and a cake of course! And that’s exactly how Fareham Probus Club celebrated its 50th Anniversary at Cams Hall Golf Club this week. Over 70 members and guests assembled with the Mayor of Fareham, Cllr Pamela Bryant, for a sumptuous lunch at which its ‘sister club’ Fareham Meon Probus Club came along to share the event with wives and partners. The lunch was followed by a talk on a favourite subject too – flowers and gardens - by the coordinator of the tremendously successful annual Fareham in Bloom competition and programme, Matt Wakefield. Matt gave a really interesting insight from behind the scenes on the development of the ‘Bloom’ programme in Fareham over the past 24 years culminating in so many Gold awards for entries all around the Borough. The Mayor joined Club President, Ted Sanderson, in cutting the birthday cake which was served to all the guests in true ‘birthday party’ style and, just to continue the floral theme, every lady guest was presented with a single yellow rose adorned with a ‘Probus’ blue ribbon. As President Ted Sanderson was to remark - “This has been a wonderful celebration of 50 years of Fareham Probus Club and demonstrates that the fellowship it provides ensures that it will continue for at least another 50 years!” Probus (derived from Professional and Business) is a world-wide organisation offering an opportunity to continue friendship and social activity for former male business associates entering retirement who enjoy a monthly meet-up for lunch and learn more of life in their community from a variety of visiting speakers. Local politicians and business leaders joined today to welcome RS Aqua, suppliers of high-specification marine instrumentation and submersible systems, to Portsmouth. Martin Stemp, Managing Director at RS Aqua explained: “To sustain our growth, RS Aqua had to relocate; and this meant a move to Port Solent in Portsmouth, within the Solent LEP area. Investment in the new premises and facilities have enabled expansion of the RS Aqua Technical Services division which provides new research and development (R&D) capacity, product innovation and systems integration capabilities. This in itself has meant that we have created three new jobs this year, plus an additional one in 2020 along with two engineering apprenticeship posts.” Penny Mordaunt, Member of Parliament for Portsmouth North was unable to attend due to obligations at Westminster, and instead sent a video message and in it said: "Congratulations on your new growth plans - I know that the move is part of that. Welcome to Portsmouth and to Port Solent - it's a wonderful place to live and work. As your new local MP I really look forward to working with, and supporting you to achieve your ambitious plans." At its new Port Solent site, RS Aqua has two separate premises including a workshop and a double office unit within 50 metres from each other. Its office accommodation is triple the size of its last one, and comfortably allows for up to 18 desks, a large meeting/training/board room, private directors office, a collaborative working space, plus staff breakout areas. The new workshop space will be able to comfortably accommodate five members of Technical / Engineering staff. This multi-functional team will work jointly on customer projects e.g. calibration and equipment maintenance, and on R&D, product innovation, and Systems Design and Systems Integration offerings.

Solent pupils meet Prime Minister and find out about careers in maritime Primary and secondary students from the Gosport and Fareham Multi-Academy Trust were keen to meet the Prime Minister, whilst taking part in London International Shipping Week today. The Solent Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) invited the students along and organised the trip to the Maritime UK Careers Hub, an all-day maritime careers event aiming to create interest and enthusiasm for maritime and maritime careers. The students also met with Ben Wallace, Secretary of State for Defence, and Nus Ghani, Maritime Minister, who, as well as the Prime Minister, spent a great deal of time chatting with the students, and answering a wide range of questions from them. The whole event took place on-board NLV Pharos, a fully operational lighthouse vessel, which is taking up residence in the Thames during London International Shipping Week and is moored alongside HMS Belfast. Robert, aged 11 in Year 7 said that it was “Awesome! We played Lego with the most powerful man in Britain!” Whilst Isabelle, aged 10 in Year 6 said that of the Prime Minister: “He listened to our ideas and loved the idea of us engineering a bridge from Gosport to the Isle of Wight.” The Year Six pupils from Gomer Junior School, and the Year Seven pupils from Bay House School relished the chance to hear first-hand from those working across Britain's £40bn maritime sector. They also took part in interactive sessions including a virtual reality port experience, and a full tour of the ship, making it a day to remember. Georgina Mulhall, Executive Head Teacher at Gomer Junior School, said: “Today's event has provided a fantastic insight for our young people into the exciting and diverse careers the future UK maritime industry will provide, from seafarers, port workers and engineers, to naval architects, shipbrokers, financiers, accountants, consultants,
insurers and lawyers. Experiences like these are critical in enthusing the next generation and are form part of the GFM curriculum. Those inspired to explore careers in the industry today will form the workforce that keeps the UK as a global maritime leader in the years ahead.” Anne-Marie Mountifield, Solent LEP Chief Executive and Maritime UK Board Member, said; “What a brilliant opportunity to promote maritime careers to students from the Solent, a region where maritime related skills are highly sought. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed engaging with the Prime Minister, the Secretary of State for Defence, and the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport. “Engaging with the Maritime UK Careers Hub is particularly pertinent for young people in the Solent region, where the maritime economy produces a powerful £5.8bn, and performs such a critical role for the wider UK. The Solent has a wealth of future-facing opportunities and is home to phenomenal research and innovation that includes oceanography, defence, automation, renewable energy, leisure and sports. There are so many opportunities for young people in the maritime world.” The Solent LEP is currently recruiting business leaders and representatives of other key organisations to join its new Skills Advisory Panel. A H Freemantle Bucking the Trend It is known that in many cases, having a traditional service as part of a cremation or a burial can help bereaved people come to terms with and understand their grief. But does the service need to follow the rules built by tradition? SPACE TIMES UK Local astronaut Tim Peake welcomes new UK Space Agency scheme to reach 1 million children a year The UK Space Agency has launched an initiative to help the space sector deliver a million engagement activities a year with young people across the UK. UK Space Agency" The space sector is booming, generating billions of pounds for our economy and creating 42,000 jobs, which means there is a real need to attract more young people to careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).The new programme aims to recruit more professionals to enthuse and inspire young people. The scheme will provide training and match them up with opportunities in schools and colleges. British ESA astronaut Tim Peake said: Space is a fascinating subject that has an incredible capacity to inspire. There are an enormous variety of careers available in the space sector and during my mission to the International Space Station I was part of a team of thousands of people working behind the scenes to make it possible. As an ambassador for space careers in the UK I have seen the power of professionals sharing their experiences with young people. This scheme is a great way of helping those young people take their first steps towards an exciting career in space." STEM Ambassadors are volunteers from a broad range of jobs and backgrounds who are passionate about inspiring young people to pursue STEM studies and careers. Working with STEM Learning, which runs both the national STEM Ambassador scheme and ESERO-UK, the UK space education office and with The Careers & Enterprise Company (CEC), which prepares and inspires young people for the fast moving world of work, the UK Space Agency is providing funding to harness the power of existing schemes that have large networks of schools and to monitor the outcomes. The UK Space Agency is providing £125,000 to set the scheme up, and ongoing support to deliver it. The value of the in-kind support from industry is expected to be in excess of £3 million. The provision will cover all regions of the UK, all ages and attainment levels, and focus especially on under-represented groups such as girls, ethnic minorities and disadvantaged groups. Dr Graham Turnock, Chief Executive of the UK Space Agency, said: We have been working hard to encourage a greater interest and understanding of the amazing array of careers available in space. As we saw with the vast interest in Tim Peake’s Principia Mission, which engaged over 2 million children in the UK with education and outreach programmes, space is truly inspirational.

There are more exciting missions on the horizon such as the UK-built Rosalind Franklin ExoMars rover, and this programme will deliver a huge boost to our efforts to inspire young people to follow STEM careers. Graham Peters, Chair of the trade association UKspace, said: The massive interest earlier this year celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Moon landings brought home the not only the huge public interest in space exploration but also how space technology plays a key role in our daily lives. There is a renewed interest from global governments and entrepreneurs in a ‘new space age’. Space brings hugely rewarding career opportunities to work with interesting technology, to travel, collaborate with international partners, and to make a difference in areas such as climate change, securing our digital infrastructure and delivering international aid. This programme will help to inspire young people to make the subject choices that will lead them to work in a really exciting sector. The scheme was announced at the UK Space Conference in Newport, Wales, and included representatives from the European Space Agency, NASA and the Australian Space Agency. 450 local schoolchildren attended the event where they took part in day of space education activities including a tour of the Moon, handling Moon rocks, finding out about the latest UK rocket technology and a talk from Tim Peake. They were joined by 50 “SPINterns” – undergraduates and graduates on Space Placements in Industry – who delivered pitches and presentations on topics including Forecasting Wildfires through Disruption of Navigation and Timing Signals, Designing Hybrid Rocket Engines and Studying the Atmospheric Structure of Mars. 60 teachers from primary and secondary schools also learnt about using space in the classroom during two days of teacher conferences held as part of the main conference and organised by the UK’s space education office, ESERO-UK. Logitech Wireless Dongle Warning
A flaw has been discovered in Logitech Unifying dongles, which were sold between 2007 and 2014. As no recall was ever made, there could still be some unfixed dongles on sale. These dongles are sold with wireless keyboards, mice, and trackballs and can be identified by an icon of a star in an orange square on the dongle (see picture). The flaw enables hacker to access your PC via the wi-fi used by the dongle. If you have one of these, we recommend that it is replaced. If you need any advice, give us a call.
Multi Factor Authentication
Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) is the process of providing 2 or more pieces of evidence before being granted access. The factors are generalised as “something you have” (eg: a key) “something you are” (eg: fingerprint) “something you know” (eg: password or PIN). Microsoft recently reported that their clouds services are seeing 300 million fraudulent sign-on attempts every day, and that “your account is more than 99.9% less likely to be compromised if you use MFA". We recommend that you set up MFA if you have not already done so, and we are happy to help if you need us.
Something Phishy
Everyone will at some point see a standard phishing email. Be it the 409 Scam (Nigerian Prince) or even a fake password reset, these are pretty easy to spot, and most people delete them without flinching. However, a spear phish or spearphishing attack is an advanced form of phishing that targets a specific person or group within an organization. It typically involves email spoofing to appear as if the email was sent from a trusted sender, and then encourages the victim(s) to click a link, or respond to an email that contains no link. The following are some of the common approaches that a threat actor will employ a spearphishing campaign.

Choose a target and research them, Spoof email to appear as superior or colleague of victim, Craft brief, but specific message that is likely to be a normal request, Ensure the message has a sense of urgency that prevents confirming details, Victim complies with request, Threat actor breaches network or receives financial wire, Threat actors that want to breach a network will often include a link to a document or other gated piece of information. That link will go to a phishing site designed to mirror that of something the victim uses regularly or looks trustworthy, where they will then unknowingly hand-deliver their credentials to the threat actor. The cybersecurity experts over at PHISHLABS advise that to spot a Spear Phishing Attack, all you need to do is PAUSE. PAUSE stands for: Plausibility: Does the request make sense? Is there an unnecessary level of urgency in the request? If something is off, report it. Attachments: Were you expecting an attachment? If not, report it and confirm with the sender. URLs: Hover over a URL before you click on it. If it’s a document or to a financial site, be sure it’s an official website. Just because it uses HTTPS does not make it secure. Sender’s address: Does the email address appear totally legit? If not, it’s a phish. Ensure: When in doubt, do not reply to the email in question, use out of band communication to confirm the suspicious request. This can be face to face, your internal messaging platform, or starting a new email thread. If you are worried that you may have been targeted or you have received an email you are not sure about, you can give us a call. Internet of Things In the consumer market, IoT technology is most synonymous with products pertaining to the concept of the "smart home". A Coke machine at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh was the world’s first IoT device. In the early 1980s, computer science graduate student David Nichols wanted a Coke, but his office was far from the machine. He feared the machine would be empty, or if it had been recently refilled, the Coke bottles would still be warm. So, he teamed up with three other students and they installed a board that sensed the status of the indicator lights which turned off and on when a Coke was purchased or when a column was empty. The program tracked remaining cold Cokes and once Cokes were refilled, they were considered “cold” after three hours.Anyone on the university’s local network could check the status of the Coke machine. Today, there are more than 8 billion connected things in use worldwide and by 2020, that number is expected to grow to 30.7 billion. That’s all for this edition. Look after our Birds
The winter months are a tough time for our garden birds to find a natural source of food while during the summer there is an abundance of food from insects, fruits and seeds. Luckily for our garden wildlife we are a nation of bird lovers with almost half of the adult UK population putting out bird food in the winter. Birds can lose over a third of their body weight in their fight to keep warm during a night of artic weather, so when morning comes it is vital they find food if they are going to survive. Attract Less Common Species While the scraps from our breadboards are fine and it is certainly better than nothing at all, if you really want to help the birds, check out the wide range of wild bird food available. You will find high quality bird seed that contains maize, sunflower seeds and peanut granules, dried berries and fruit. Mealworms are essential for the robin, while lard balls will provide the high fat diet required during the cold months for our native garden birds. Lard balls will also help to attract less common species such as the Great Spotted Woodpecker. Plant Shrubs, Trees and Flowers You can also help to keep the birds well fed by planting berry bearing shrubs, trees and flowers. These include the berberis shrub and the holly, hawthorn and Rowan tree that bears berries most of the winter. Cotoneasters bear abundant berries and hibernating insects and the black berries of the common ivy will help

keep the bird life going during the tougher months of January and February. Furthermore, Teasel and sunflower plants have compact seed heads that will feed goldfinches and house sparrows. Different Habits It may not be obvious, but different birds have different feeding habits. Robins, blackbirds and wrens are known as ground feeders, so need a bird table, while suspended feeders are ideal for greenfinches, tits and sparrows. This means apart from considering what to put out for the birds, we also need to think where we are going to put the food. Use bird tables, feeders, wild bird food containers and nesting boxes, which can provide essential cover during harsh weather conditions. Finally, feeding birds in the winter will pay dividends as you will find they become used to visiting your garden for food and during the summer months will help keep your garden free of insects and bugs.

Bird Aware - Success in the Solent South Hampshire is at the very heart of a unique stretch of coastline known as the Solent. Stretching over 250 kilometres, the area is home to 2 international ports, 2 national parks and the popular tourist venue of the Isle of Wight. With this wealth of diversity, it can mean that our attractive coastline is exposed to numerous natural and human pressures. Recognised internationally for its ecological value, the Solent provides an invaluable food supply to both a sedentary and a migrant bird population. Some birds fly as far as three thousand miles to overwinter on the Solent, making it literally a life line to a variety of bird species. For this reason, three Special Protection Areas (SPAs) have been designated across the Solent. These support both nationally and internationally important numbers of a variety of bird populations. Notable species include the Black-tailed Godwit, Common Ringed Plover, Eurasian Teal, and Dark-bellied Brent Goose. Many of you will have admired these birds in spots like Titchfield Haven or Bunny Meadows, with over ten per cent of the global population of dark-bellied brent geese travelling to our precious coastline during the winter period.

With such a rich coastal landscape, settlements are numerous, and this has resulted in high urban density along many parts of the coast. Significant numbers of people (and their dogs) enjoy casual walks, cycling, sailing and a range of watersports in the same spots the birds rely on to survive. For overwintering birds, the proximity of humans and the nature of their recreational activities can have significant impact. With limited opportunities to feed, defined by the tides, human disturbance can inadvertently disturb the birds when they most need to feed and rest. After long and arduous journeys to the Solent, such disturbance can deprive them of vital feeding opportunities which can quickly impact on their ability to survive. Many conservationists are already aware of the increased energy expenditure associated with birds being disturbed while feeding or roosting.
Originally based on anecdotal evidence from local ornithologists and harbour authorities, significant local research has been undertaken in recent years to highlight such disturbance. This research anticipates an increase in disturbance resulting from a rising population. In an effort to minimise the impact of this, a major local partnership was formed. Comprising of thirteen local authorities, four nature conservation bodies and two national parks, Bird Aware Solent publicly launched in 2016. The Partnership represents a concerted effort to have a positive and meaningful impact on the birds through public engagement. It is now increasingly recognised that access to the countryside is crucial to the long-term success of nature conservation projects and has wider benefits such as increasing people’s awareness of the natural world and health benefits. In line with this best practice a team of dedicated Bird Aware Rangers work along the Solent coastline, helping educate those using it. Armed with a stock of leaflets, advice and best of all, a friendly disposition, the Rangers actively engage with the public, helping them realise the value of the landscape and how little changes in their behaviour can be of significant benefit to the birds. Face to face conversations are having a real impact and leading to unexpected support from a variety of sources. The Rangers are building strong working relationships with landowners, community
groups and local businesses. Bird Aware is a far-sighted project that is helping many organisations to work in partnership for the benefit of conservation. Combined with an informative website, numerous public-facing events - and not to mention articles in the very best of publications! – Bird Aware Solent is really helping the public enjoy their valued landscape in new, more considered ways. The public facing work is also backed up by tangible research which helps inform the campaigns undertaken. Country Park hedgehog safety campaign success Itchen Valley Country Park posed the question "Is your garden Hog Happy?" back in October 2018 when they launched their year long campaign. Nearly 1800 local residents have directly engaged with the activities and now know more about how to keep local hedgehogs safe. For example, over two hundred people attended Hedgehog Days, A poster competition for local school children received over 70 group entries with over one hundred public votes, while a further 1,300 accessed information online. Summary of activities: • two Hedgehog Days at the country park • hedgehog-related craft sessions • social media campaigns around the top ten tips (#HogHappyGarden) • schools poster competition • encouraged the Council's Direct Services team to put hedgehog safety stickers on their gardening equipment • encouraged residents to become Hedgehog Champions and populate the Hedgehog Map. The campaign supported the UK's ten year conservation strategy (2015-2025), which is spearheaded by Hedgehog Street - a nationwide campaign run by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) and People's Trust for Endangered Species (PTES). They have been on a mission since 2011 to raise awareness of the decline of the Western-European Hedgehog over the late 20th and early 21st century, by promoting simple things people can do in their own gardens to help hedgehogs, such as creating a small CD-sized hole in your fence and becoming a Hedgehog Champion.

The latest Hedgehog Day took place Sunday 6 October with experts from New Forest Wildlife Park, who supplied prizes and crafts, and Hamble Hedgehogs. There were two native species (Brian and Hattie) from the Wildlife Park and Snoop Hog Hufflepuff, an African Pygmy, from the local rescue - Hamble Hedgehogs. Visitors enjoyed the crafts, Hedgehog fact trail, meeting the experts and of course - the hedgehogs! To round off the campaign, Eastleigh Borough Council joins the BHPS 'Roll of Honour' for adding hedgehog safety stickers to the Council's equipment. They will remind staff to check for hedgehogs during tasks such as strimming and mowing. The country park thanks the Hedgehog Street team for their support and are pleased to announce that although Hampshire was reported as top of the table for hog sightings, The Borough of Eastleigh contributed to 15% of these in the past year (an increase from 10% in previous years).
Urban Observatory research finds bats time-share with hunting patterns
One of the first projects to be completed using sensors that form part of the Cranfield Urban Observatory has shown that different species of bat appear to time-share with their hunting patterns. Ultrasonic acoustic sensors were placed around the Cranfield University campus and listened for the hunting calls of different species of bat. Around 22,500 five-second snapshot recordings were made over several nights in August and then computer algorithms were used to filter and sort the sounds. Time stamps from the recordings show that different species came out to hunt at different times in the night and seemed to suggest that certain species prefer to hunt in particular habitats, such as in hedgerows or around buildings. Junfei Liu, who has just completed the research as part of his Geographical Information Management MSc thesis project, said: “We used ultrasonic microphones set to turn on at dusk to pick up the sounds of the bats. Around six different species were recorded – including some that are less common – and there appears to be a pattern to when the different types are hunting. “There could be a number of reasons for this,” added Junfei. “It could be that they don’t like to hunt at the same time or be too close to one another. More data from a wider variety of locations is also needed – with machine learning there is always potential for the software to allocate sounds to the wrong kinds of bats.” Further testing with the sensors is now underway and a permanent network will be established as part of the Urban Observatory, including acoustic sensors across Cranfield Airport’s airfield. These could be used to monitor bird songs, for example, and assess the impact of aircraft noise on wildlife. Dr Stephen Hallett, Associate Professor in Environmental Informatics in the Centre for Environment and Agricultural Informatics, and supervisor for the project, said: “Soundscape ecology tools can play a key role in undertaking biodiversity audits, and the use of the Internet of Things in our research allows sensors and micro processors to be linked to emergent techniques such as machine learning.
This research project is a demonstration of how applied skills from our taught courses can be put to use to develop practical environmental applications.” Other supervisors for the project, titled ‘Development of an Internet of Things approach for monitoring biodiversity on the University campus’, were Dr Simon Jude and Dr Iq Mead. Data from a 2016/17 biodiversity audit at Cranfield was also used to help plan the locations for the sensors. Soundscape ecology will form a key part of the Cranfield Urban Observatory as its £1 million sensor network – part of the UK’s largest urban research programme, looking at how our cities could be managed and developed in the future for human wellbeing – is deployed from 2019 onwards.

Locks Heath Back in the Swim! Locks Heath Swim Squad have started the new season in style. A young, inexperienced team headed to Christchurch for a Novice Gala whilst the more experienced swimmers were in action at The James Moreno Meet at The Quays, Southampton where the Locks Heath swimmers collected thirteen medals. Asher Fletcher took Gold in the 9/10 years 50m Breaststroke in a Personal Best time of 49.90. Ruby Goddard amassed six Silver medals in the 50m Butterfly, 50m and 100m Backstroke, 50m and 100m Freestyle and the 200 Individual Medley. There was also Silver for Elizabeth Brown in the 100m Breaststroke and for Charlotte Aris in the 400m Freestyle. Aris also collected Bronze in the 100m Butterfly. Bronze medals also went to Joshua Beadsworth (50m Butterfly), Finley Taplin (200m Freestyle) and Lucy Selby (400m Freestyle). Other LHSS swimmers in action were Isabel Barbary, Toby Ellis, Jacob Knapp, Daisy Smith, Sophie Bagby, Leila McNamara.
LHSS competed at the Club Championship’s which took place at Waterlooville.
It was a fun filled weekend with some great results. A lovely competition for the younger new starters to compete in. The club welcomed Isla Kennedy, Evie Sheriff-Lee, Ella Harrison and Annie Armitage to their first meet. In total the club entered 157 swims, an impressive 100 personal bests and 2 club records. Ella Harrison (8) who is new to competing won gold in 25M fly, 50 back, 100 back, 50 breast, 50 free, 100 free, 400 free 100IM and 200IM. Ella also claimed 2 club records in the 400 free and 100IM. Many congratulations young lady hope your success continues.

Owen Berry (9) has continued to train hard, first time he has won medals at a meet and was awarded gold in the 3 races he entered. He won gold in 25M fly, 50M back, and 100M back. One of our eldest swimmers Josh Henderson (13) managed to win gold 50 breast, 100 breast, 50 free, 100 free and 400 free. Well done young man. Leila McNamara (13) blew her mum who watching away, she managed to knock an impressive 8 seconds off her 200-breast time and secured a county time in her 50 breast. All that hard work and determination has finally paid off! Well done to all swimmers that competed. Head coach Lynda Reid said ‘It was great to see all LHSS swimmers competing. There were some great swims from all and there are certainly some youngsters to look out for in the future.

About Fareham Nomads Swimming Club Fareham Nomads Swimming Club (FNSC) is a competitive swimming club affiliated to the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA), ASA South East Region and Hampshire County ASA (HCASA). Our goals are: 1. To ensure that everyone has the opportunity to learn to swim. 2. To ensure that every member can achieve their personal goal within the sport. 3. To ensure that every member has the opportunity to compete. To achieve these aims, the club has professional coaches to supervise our competitive squads and our learn to swim program. Under their guidance and direction, the club's swimmers are able to compete successfully in many competitions in the ASA Southern Region including Leagues, Galas and Open Meets, together with additional non-league and Novice Galas to provide competitive opportunities across all levels of ability. Our swimmers also compete at County, Regional, National and International levels with notable success. The club is accredited to Swim 21 - it has reached the tough standards laid down by the National Governing Body (the ASA) for swimming clubs. Currently the club holds two levels of accreditation i.e. teaching and skills development. Fareham Nomads Swimming Club is also a recognised Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC) which has been achieved because the club is open to the whole local community without any discrimination. The Club was formed in 1974 before there was a public swimming pool in Fareham. Due to the lack of a home pool the club took its' name because in the early days it led a 'nomadic' existence, using various pools throughout the area for training until 1980 when Fareham Leisure Centre was opened. Since then, the Club has grown considerably and today has a membership of around 250 children and young adults.
The club runs a learn to swim scheme to provide lessons for young children who either cannot swim or have taken the first steps to learn with lessons being held on a Monday and Friday evening at Fareham Leisure Centre between 6:00pm and 8:30pm using the small shallow teaching pool. Once a swimmer is competent to swim 25 metres then they will advance to lessons in the main swimming pool. Here they will be taught by qualified teachers to develop their skills further and build up their stamina. Fareham Nomads is a competitive swimming club and provides competitive opportunities for swimmers from novice up to national standards. The club has many competitive squads including one for Masters, to develop swimmers from novice level upto national competition standard. Fraudulent Snapchat account promised ‘free money’ A Snapchat account called @freecashforu promised impossibly high returns for a £200 investment. Get Safe Online CEO Tony Neate said: "We are beginning to see a rise in these types of frauds taking place on social media so users need to be aware of the risks. We advise that you should never transfer money to someone you don't know as you have absolutely no protection if it turns out to be a fraud. Cohabitation Agreements
It is now very common for people in relationships to cohabit instead of marrying and to cohabit before marriage. There is no such thing as a common law husband or wife – this is an urban myth!
The law does not give cohabitees the same rights to financial support or to share in their partner’s assets on the breakdown of their relationship, in the same way as spouses. Cohabitation agreements are mostly sought by couples who have decided to live together but partnership but who want to regulate their financial and living arrangements both during the period of cohabitation and should itcome to an end. The cohabitation agreement can be executed even after cohabitation has begun. A cohabitation agreement records arrangements between people who have chosen to live together. It records each party’s rights and responsibilities in relation to the property where they live or intend to live together, financial arrangements between them, both during and following cohabitation and the arrangements to be made if they decide that they no longer want to live together. A cohabitation agreement can be used to record ownership of assets such as property, cars, furniture, art etc which may be used or enjoyed by both parties when they live together, but perhaps are to be retained by the owner if cohabitation ends. The potential benefits of entering into cohabitation agreements are financial planning, avoiding litigation and protection of as-sets. The purpose of a cohabitation agreement is to give parties the flexibility and freedom to organise their financial affairs as they wish both during and following cohabitation and to record the cohabiting couple’s intentions about the legal and beneficial ownership of real and personal property with the aim of reducing the possibility of a dispute about ownership if cohabitation ends. Such agreements also try to identify and protect investments and contributions that you have either brought into the relationship or have contributed significantly towards during the relationship. This is very common where there is a property often where one party has paid a significant contribution, or a party has received a gift or a loan from family, or where parties are beginning a new relationship following a divorce and they wish to safeguard their own financial security and protect a future inheritance for their children. Parties considering a cohabitation agreement should be aware of the uncertainty regarding enforceability of terms of a cohabitation agreement and that it is essential that such agreements are drafted carefully to comply with ordinary rules of contract in order to reduce the risk of them being challenged. It is important to ensure that the agreement is negotiated and signed after a sufficient cooling off period has elapsed.

Key Facts to be aware of when purchasing under the Shared-Ownership Scheme Shared-Ownership is a great way to get a stake in a property when you can’t afford or can’t borrow enough to buy outright on the open market. There are, however, common complaints from people in Shared-Ownership schemes and in view of that we think there are some things its important to make clear about such schemes straight away.
Maintenance charges
Hopefully the monthly mortgage repayments plus rent will still make Shared-Ownership far cheaper than buying a property outright, but don’t forget to add on maintenance charges and be prepared for possible increases in the future.
As well as a general monthly service charge for caretaking and maintenance of communal areas, ask how you will be expected to pay for more significant works e.g. roof maintenance. These charges won’t be split between you and the Housing Association, so, although you are only buying a percentage share of the property, you will be expected to cover all the maintenance bill.
No renting allowed
There are also likely to be restrictions on whether you can rent the property out. In the great majority of cases, sub-letting will not be allowed.
Buying increased shares will cost more than the share itself When it comes to increasing the stake in your property (“staircasing”), it’s not just buying the share. There are other costs involved:
Valuation Fee: Your housing provider will instruct a surveyor to confirm the current market value of the property. Legal Expenses : Staircasing will involve changes to your existing lease which will require a solicitor. Stamp Duty: There are two ways to pay. The first involves a one-off payment in advance, based on the market value of the property, and the second is by paying in stages. You will need to calculate the best option for you. Mortgage Fees: If you are applying to change your Lender to buy your additional share, or to access better interest rates, you will need to pay the Lenders valuation fee and a mortgage arrangement fee, plus any penalty your existing lender may charge for terminating your mortgage with them. Sometimes there are also restrictions when it comes to buying up a greater share in your property e.g. Will you be able to staircase to 100% outright ownership or is there an upper limit? Can you start staircasing immediately? What are the maximum number of times you can staircase? What’s the minimum share you can buy at any one time?
Restrictions on what you can do
Check for restrictions within your lease. You are likely to be required to ask the housing provider’s permission in writing before you make any structural alterations to your home. In some cases, the lease will require you to ask permission for redecorating as well.
The risk of negative equity
Buying a New-Build property, whether through Shared-Ownership or on the open market, is more likely to make sense if you expect to stay put for a number of years. This is because New-Build properties include an extra premium on the sale price that, like a new car, depreciates as soon as you move in. If house prices fall, you may fall into negative equity and lose money if you try to move. To avoid the risk of feeling trapped in the event of negative equity, be honest about the properties you are looking at. Is there enough storage? Are you expecting to start a family in the next few years? Does your furniture fit in the rooms?
Issues around selling your share when moving home
When you are ready to sell your home, the process is not straightforward and can stall your progress on to the next rung of the property ladder. Firstly, the housing provider is likely to have the right to

buy back the property before it is marketed to anyone else (this is called “right of first refusal”), even in some cases if you have purchased 100% of the property through staircasing. This is so your property can be put to other people on the waiting list who are unable to buy on the open market. After a set time, if your housing provider fails to find a buyer, you are free to market your share of the property yourself or using an Estate Agent. But you will need to find a buyer who fulfils the housing providers eligibility criteria for Shared-Ownership. As such, your pool of potential buyers may be reduced.
You don’t have greater protection under Shared-Ownership
Just because this is a government backed scheme doesn’t mean you get any more protection. • Check you can afford increased maintenance charges; • While rents start low, expect these to increase; • It is your responsibility to keep up repayments on your mortgage loan. New Hate Crime reporting app now available across Hampshire & Isle of Wight Southampton’s Hate Crime Network and the Police and Crime Commissioner for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight have teamed up to make Southampton’s hate crime reporting app available to all Hampshire and Isle of Wight residents. The app, which is available to download on Google Play and Apple, allows its users to immediately report a hate crime to the nearest third-party reporting centre. Action Fraud Update – Amazon Prime Scam Action Fraud has received hundreds of reports of a scam where victims receive an automated phone call claiming they’ve been charged for an Amazon Prime Subscription. The phone call informs people their personal details have been fraudulently used to subscribe to Amazon Prime, however they can cancel the transaction by pressing 1. When victims do this they are automatically connected to criminals posing as amazon customer service representatives, who remotely access their computer and steal their personal and financial details. UK takes significant step towards legal certainty for blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies as worldwide smart contract market expected to reach $300m by 2023. ● The worldwide smart contract market is expected to reach $300m by 2023 and the World Economic Forum predicts 10% of global GDP will be stored on the blockchain by 2027. ● However, legal uncertainty is often cited as the most significant barrier to adoption, investment and development of cryptoassets and smart contracts ● The legal statement takes significant steps to address this uncertainty, by setting out answers to critical questions as to the classification and characterisation of cryptoassets and smart contracts ● By providing investors with increased confidence of their rights, the statement helps to provide a dependable foundation for mainstream utilisation of cryptoassets and smart contracts The UK Jurisdiction Taskforce of the Lawtech Delivery Panel, chaired by Sir Geoffrey Vos, Chancellor of the High Court, has today published its legal statement on the status of cryptoassets and smart contracts under English and Welsh law. The landmark statement seeks to address legal uncertainty by recognising cryptoassets as tradable property and smart contracts as enforceable agreements under English law. Smart contracts can be used to create more secure and more efficient ways of implementing (and automating performance of) contracts between parties. This could revolutionise agreements, from mortgages and medical research to property ownership, as smart contracts automatically execute transactions and remove the need for a middle man. For example: - smart contracts remove the need for expensive services in property ownership and could even enable sellers to handle transactions independently. - smart contracts can be applied to mortgage transactions - allowing both parties to digitally agree to the sale before processing the payment, making the process more secure and reducing the likelihood of fraud. Not only will this legal statement be beneficial for consumers but also for investors. Cryptoassets are already demonstrating considerable traction, with the top 100 cryptoassets worth a collective quarter of a trillion dollars. This statement will provide more certainty to investors in the UK market providing them with a greater understanding of their legal rights when they trade in cryptoassets. The statement will also provide a dependable foundation for the mainstream adoption of cryptoassets and smart contracts, in particular offering a strategic boost to startups and scaleups operating in this space. Solent LEP welcomes Hampshire Councillor to Board of Directors In a second week of announcements regarding new Board directors, the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has appointed Councillor Judith Grajewski from Hampshire County Council to be a Local Authority Director. Councillor Grajewski is Executive Member for Public Health at Hampshire as well as also a Councillor at Eastleigh Borough Council. She is currently a director of a Hampshire-based advertising and design agency providing strategic marketing and creative support to local and national small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs). She has served as a local school governor, was a member of the Totton College Forum and is currently a governor at Eastleigh College. She is Hampshire County Council’s representative on the Partnership for South Hampshire (PfSH) Joint Management Committee. Councillor Grajewski said of the new role: “Being part of the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership works well with my current roles as their work impacts the whole region, establishing long-term strategies and actions for future generations that live and work here. Solent LEP welcomes University Vice-Chancellor to Board of Directors
The Solent Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has appointed University of Portsmouth Vice Chancellor Professor Graham Galbraith to its board of directors with immediate effect. Graham comes to the board with extensive experience in management and a strong entrepreneurial outlook which is supported by a substantial record of academic achievement and an in-depth understanding of the higher education sector in the UK and overseas. Graham’s experience in the education sector includes the past six years at the University of Portsmouth with previous roles as Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Hertfordshire and Pro Vice-Chancellor at Glasgow Caledonian University. His additional attributes include being a Chartered Engineer, Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, a member of the Chartered Institution for Building Service Engineers and a member of the Institute of Directors.

In 2015/16 the Solent area universities generated £4.2 billion GVA and supported around 52,300 jobs across the UK, and this included £2.1 billion GVA and around 33,000 jobs in the Solent LEP area. More businesses sign-up to inspire the region's young people
The Solent Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has seen a flurry of businesses sign-up since it launched the Solent Cornerstone Employer Network in May this year, in partnership with the Careers & Enterprise Company (CEC). Businesses such as BAE Systems, MGPS Commercial, Paultons Park, Portsmouth City Council and Solent NHS Trust have joined the network, committing to invest time and resources to support local schools and colleges with their careers education and with inspiring young people. Initial members included Airbus and the University of Portsmouth, and subsequent organisations have committed to the network as part of their own education outreach activities, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) or early careers objectives. Together they have pledged to ensure that all young people across the region have access to regular, meaningful engagement with employers reflecting the priority sectors in the Solent Hub. They are also committed to supporting them to gain work experience needed to help them make informed choices about their futures. Cornerstone Employers act as champions to encourage new business in the area to get involved in supporting schools and colleges, as well as encouraging their own staff to become volunteer ‘Enterprise Advisers’. Solent LEP to adopt Expert in Residence Programme The Solent LEP is working with HM Government and NatWest to launch the Expert in Residence programme, which aims to increase the number of women based in the United Kingdom to move from intending to start a business to actually doing so. Following the publication of the Alison Rose Review of Female Entrepreneurship a government-commissioned review into the barriers women in business face and what can be done to overcome them, NatWest’s Aaron Britton has been appointed to the role of Expert in Residence at Solent LEP. The aim of the project is to encourage collaboration and to deliver positive action supporting and profiling diversity and inclusion in business. Alison Rose, Chief Executive of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc, and author of the Review of Female Entrepreneurship made eight recommendations to accelerate change, including 'Improve access to expertise by expanding the entrepreneur and banker in residence programmes'.
This role is a great opportunity to support my personal development and to provide local businesses with information and advice that will help them prosper and grow. Its focus is to support female entrepreneurs but not exclusively, and will include all business owners." Solent LEP Deputy Chairman and Ambassador for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) Brian Johnson commented: “I am very pleased we have entered into this strategic partnership with NatWest to launch our new Expert in Residence programme. Having Aaron, a banking expert, on-board will be a huge asset to our team. Aaron has over 13 years’ experience in retail, business and commercial banking working alongside businesses to support them. His Institute of Enterprise and Entrepreneurs (IOEE) accreditation, specialising in business enterprise and business support, gives the Solent LEP a unique opportunity in this region to proactively respond to the Alison Rose Review of Female Entrepreneurship report to deliver positive action, support and confidence to women to take the step into business or grow their business."
Following pilots of the initiative, the Solent LEP is one of the first to establish an Expert in Residence as part of the national roll-out. The purpose is for more female-led businesses to be encouraged and provided with knowledge and experience and ensure more female role model businesses are supported to grow and scale-up, creating jobs and opportunities. Aaron, who is a Business Growth Enabler at NatWest, outlined how he will be working with Solent LEP for one day a week supporting on projects: Undertaking customer consultations to identify customer needs and signposting the most appropriate service options, including providing frequent and useful business information, advice, and updates via social media platforms. Aaron continued: “I’m really looking forward to getting started with this fantastic new programme and I am so pleased to have been selected as the Expert in Residence for the Solent LEP.

HMS COLLINGWOOD WELCOMES NEW COMMANDING OFFICER Sailors and staff at HMS Collingwood have welcomed their new Commanding Officer, Captain Catherine Jordan, to the Fareham establishment. Captain Jordan has taken command of the 200-acre site together with the wider aspects of the Maritime Warfare School (MWS). Her role encompasses the delivery of all Warfare and Weapon Engineering Training for Royal Navy Officers and Ratings and encompasses HMS Collingwood (Fareham), the Defence Diving School (Horsea Island), the Royal Navy School of Physical Training (HMS Temeraire, Portsmouth), Naval Military Training Schools (various sites in UK) and Phoenix Training Group (HMS Excellent, Portsmouth). On assuming command Captain Jordan said: “I am both privileged and excited to have taken command of HMS Collingwood and the Maritime Warfare School. Training and preparing our Sailors and Officers for a range of global maritime operations, adapting to exponential developments in both technology and threats, is a vital task the team here deliver and I am looking forward to the challenges ahead.” Captain Jordan took the helm from Commander Mark Walker, the Executive Officer of HMS Collingwood who temporarily had assumed the Commanding Officer role. SAILORS GO THE EXTRA MILE TO SUPPORT CHILDREN’S CHARITY
Sailors from HMS Collingwood’s Warrant Officers’ and Senior Rates’ Mess have been busy this year raising money for a charity with personal links to one of its members. The Mess raises funds each year for both military and civilian charities and this year Chief Petty Officer (CPO) John Murray proposed the Amelia-Mae Foundation as it supports families and children with Neuroblastoma cancer, from which he lost a close personal relative. The Charity was created after the death of two-year old Amelia-Mae Davies in July 2013, who was diagnosed with the disease in September 2012. Neuroblastoma is the most common solid tumour in childhood after brain tumours and its cause is currently

unknown. The Amelia-Mae Foundation aims to support families of children with the disease whilst also raising awareness of the condition. Throughout this year Mess Members have been participating in challenges and fund-raising events in aid of the Charity including a Three-Peaks Challenge. This involved climbing the three highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales, namely Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon, in just 24 hours. They also held a comedy night and a virtual dog racing event as well as manning a stall at the Base’s Open Day to raise money for this worthy cause. Recently their hard work was recognised with the official presentation of a cheque for two thousand pounds from the Mess to CPO John Murray, Treasurer for the Amelia-Mae Foundation. Petty Officer Rob Morris was part of the team raising funds and said, “This cheque presentation is part of our ongoing relationship with the foundation which continues to grow and recently Petty Officer (Above Water Training) (PO(AWT)) Jason Smith and PO(AWT) Rob Morris attended the Amelia-Mae Annual Awards ceremony on behalf of the Warrant Officers’ & Senior Rates’ Mess and Above Water Training Association. HMS COLLINGWOOD PUSHES THE BOAT OUT FOR CANCER SUPPORT CHARITY Personnel at HMS Collingwood were spoiled for choice recently with Macmillan Cancer Support’s “Biggest Coffee Morning” cake sales taking place across the Base. Staff from across the Base donated cakes and savoury goodies to help raise money for the Macmillan charity which supports both those diagnosed with cancer, and their families with emotional and practical support including financial and medical assistance. For a donation, staff could choose from treats including cakes with every flavour imaginable to tempt the taste buds, together with a huge range of savoury options to cater for everyone. Hayley Packer organises the Macmillan Cancer Support Coffee Mornings in the Babcock Integrated Training Support Centre (ITSC) annually and this event marks her seventh year raising funds for this excellent cause. She said, “We’re delighted because this was the biggest turnout yet. We had a Bake-Off competition too with a prize of £20 which two staff members donated. The winner of this was Sharon Spence.” The ITSC event raised £406.02. Cakes were also on offer in the Chaplaincy, where they’d already been collecting funds with two weeks’ worth of bacon butty sales to add to their total of £340.

A former Royal Navy Fleet Chief Petty Officer paid a special visit to HMS Collingwood recently, the establishment he first joined in 1951. Francis Jefferson, 85, joined the Royal Navy in 1951 as a Radio Electrical Mechanic (REM). Completing two years, training at the Fareham base, he went on to have an illustrious career which saw him serve on HMS Scorpion, HMS Highflyer and HMS London to name but a few, completing his 28 years’ service as the Officer in Charge of the Wireless Stations Rinella and Zeebug, Malta. Francis, who was selected for promotion to Fleet Chief in 1972 in the first selection, now lives in Stornoway in the Western Isles, Scotland. He contacted the establishment to see if he could pay a return visit to the site where his career began, marking the 40th anniversary of his leaving the Navy. Welcomed on site by Chief Petty Officer Phil Alton, Francis visited the Communications and Electrical Museum on site where he was able to see equipment he used to maintain. He was then shown equipment used onboard HMS Queen Elizabeth, before being taken on a site tour, prior to lunch. On leaving the Royal Navy, Francis spent the first year planning and building a new home in a village where he grew up. Following this he became a lecturer in Electrical and Electronics in a local college, remaining there for 15 years until retirement at the age of 61. In addition to this Francis joined his local branch of the Royal British Legion, serving initially as a committee member and now as president. When asked about his time in Collingwood and his visit
Francis said “All in all, looking back I must thank the RN and Collingwood in particular for the training and experience that it gave me with the ability to use that in a further career. I am now enjoying a period of retirement with my family nearby and easily accessible. For my visit to Collingwood to revive memories, I admit that although knowing that it would have changed, I was very pleased and grateful for the welcome and guidance given by Phil and the memory jog in the Museums. HMS COLLINGWOOD CELEBRATES GUY FAWKES NIGHT On Thursday 7 November crowds gathered at HMS Collingwood for this year’s Bonfire Evening, held for Service and civilian personnel based at the establishment. Personnel and their families were invited to attend the annual event, which is kindly funded by the Central Amenities Fund and takes place on Collingwood’s sports fields to mark Guy Fawkes Night. After making a donation on arrival, attendees were able to enjoy refreshments and children could take advantage of the free funfair which was provided by ‘Charles Cole’s Funfair’ before the main event began. The Bonfire was lit by Captain Catherine Jordan Royal Navy, Commanding Officer of HMS Collingwood. This was followed by an impressive firework display which dazzled over the crowds as they watched in awe. All donations generated from the event will go to two charities. Hosanna House and Children’s Pilgrimage Trust (HCPT) which was organised by Master At Arms Natalie Moore and The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal which was organised by Chief Petty Officer Lindsey Hallam, with a grand total of £1054 raised. HCPT is a worldwide charity taking children and adults with medical and social needs on Easter pilgrimages to Lourdes. They not only provide the children and adults with a fantastic holiday, but also the parents and carers with some well-deserved respite. HCPT Group 186 is the Portsmouth Royal Navy group, made up of individuals who are serving, retired or dependants of those affiliated with the Royal Navy.

SAILORS FROM HMS COLLINGWOOD COMMEMORATE ALBERT MCKENZIE VC A team from the Close Range Training Section, Maritime Warfare School, HMS Collingwood recently attended a commemorative event at the Albert McKenzie VC Memorial, south London. The memorial, a statue of Albert, which stands off Tower Bridge Road in Bermondsey, south London, was officially unveiled in 2015. A stone's throw from his childhood home, the memorial sits atop a concrete plinth made from a section of the Zeebrugge harbour wall donated by the people of Flanders. The Close Range Team at HMS Collingwood have a long-standing affiliation with Albert McKenzie due to his gunnery background in the Royal Navy during the time of WW1. Albert utilised the Lewis gun on the mole in Zeebrugge, demonstrating the confidence, determination, attitude and maritime gunnery skills still taught and trained by the Close Range team at HMS Collingwood today, providing the fleet with Close Range gunnery. Albert Edward McKenzie was born on 23rd October 1898 and lived with his family in Southwark, who were known to be regular followers of Millwall FC. He joined the Royal Navy as an Able Seaman during the First World War. On 23rd April 1918 sailors from the Royal Navy, including Albert, led a raid to recapture the port of Zeebrugge. Despite being severely wounded, Albert’s bravery, courage and fortitude, along with other comrades, ensured the success of the mission. After the raid had been completed, sailors from HMS Vindictive and HMS Daffodil held a ballot - the first occasion this had occurred - and chose the courageous and critically wounded Albert to receive the Victoria Cross. On 31st July 1918, he went in full uniform and on crutches to Buckingham Palace, accompanied by his mother and sister, to receive his VC from King George V. In addition to the wreath laying service at the memorial, a service took place at Millwall FC prior to their match with Stoke City FC. Additionally, a ‘Top Instructor’ award presentation took place on the pitch where a miniature statue of McKenzie was presented to Petty Officer (AWW) Christopher Tongue from the Close Range
Section. Nige Newport, Close Range Training Instructor, who served 22 years as a gunner in the Royal Navy attended both events for the past six years and said “It is always an honour to be part of this affiliation which takes place annually and I have met some amazing people from Bermondsey and from Millwall FC. Lymington Based Interior Designer Wins at The International Design and Architecture Awards 2019 Lymington based interior design company Jenny Allan Design has won at this year’s International Design and Architecture Awards in the category “property value £2.5 - 5m”. The awards were held on 20th September at the prestigious Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane, Mayfair with attendance of 700 leading designers flying in from all over the world. Against a prestigious international field, Jenny Allan Design’s Berkshire Residence project gained the most votes in their category from the 81,000 public votes received. Jenny Allan Design, was founded 5 and half years ago by Hampshire born Jenny Allan, and in that time has grown to become one of the county’s leading high end interior design studios. Harmston flys high as the youngest person ever to solo in Goodwood Flying School’s Piper Cub At just 17 years of age, Elyot Harmston is the youngest person ever to take off on a solo flight from Goodwood Aerodrome in the school’s Piper Cub and is now well on his way to completing his Light Aircraft Pilot Licence (LAPL). Harmston was first introduced to flying at a young age when he lived close to the end of Goodwood’s runway in Westhampnett. Watching the aircraft take off and come into land brought to life the tales of his great grandfather, who was an RAF serviceman and trained pilots overseas. Discovering that you could start flying lessons at 14 and fly solo at 16, Harmston fully immersed himself into Goodwood’s Flying School, having already enrolled in Chichester Squadron 461 Air Cadets. Taking to the sky before he could legally drive a car, Harmston commented; “As I have a summer birthday, I wanted to start flying as soon as I could - my friends were all learning to drive, but I was learning to fly!” His determination ensured that he was a regular at the Goodwood Flying School immersing himself in both the theory and the practical aspects of flying.
Harmston added; “Rob Wildeboer is a wonderful coach and has thoroughly taught me the principles of flying. “A day I recall fondly was early on in my training when hearing a Boultbee Spitfire on the radio while coming from East Head back to Goodwood. We were lucky enough to be just underneath the aircraft as it flew back and we turned onto its tail as it passed us – it was phenomenal.” In the build-up to the solo flight, nerves threatened to overwhelm him, but before his final lesson, his father surprised him with his great grandfather’s American Calobar flying sunglasses. This connection to the last generation of pilots in his family was an inspirational moment before taking to the cockpit in the Piper Cub for his much-anticipated solo flight. Rob Wildeboer, Flying School Manager at Goodwood, commented; “Elyot has been brilliant throughout his training. It’s a testament to his dedication and attitude towards flying that he has achieved this major milestone in such a short space of time.” Harmston, who aspires to fly Spitfires will continue his training in the coming months en route to achieving his LAPL.

Hugh Cornwell at The 1865 in Southampton
Stranglers. He also played the songs as if he were still in The Stranglers and it was a high energy show. He played all of the popular songs we all know like: Golden Brown”, “Strange Little Girl” and my dad’s personal favorite “Goodbye Toulouse.” I particularly enjoyed the song, “No More Heroes.” Don’t be fooled by the title by thinking its like “Time for Heroes” by The Libertines because its not. What it is, is a really good song you should definitely listen to. After you’ve finished reading this article of course. At the end of the show Hugh didn’t do the typical walk off stage and wait for an encore. He knew the audience wanted more and he gave us it. We got two more tracks and then he wrapped up the show by introducing the rest of his bands and thanking us. To sum up this show I will say I though it was incredible. Hugh has been active since the 70’s and shows absolutely no signs of slowing down. He has just finished his “Monster” tour so if you didn’t get to see him this time round keep on eye on his official site to keep up to date with live shows. His new album is also out now and available through his site.
I had been to The 1865 just a month before this to see Yungblud which was honestly one of the best gigs I’ve been to at The 1865. That was until I saw Hugh Cornwell perform there who was incredible. Hugh Cornwell was the front man of the 1970’s punk band The Stranglers. Anyone who knows me knows how much I love punk music and so I was very excited for this show. The gig was split into two halves. With no support band Hugh entered the stage with his band and kicked of the show with two of the singles off of his new album “Monster.” This is his latest album of his extensive solo career. But he didn’t just play all the new songs from Monster. He played a whole array of songs from his previous solo albums showing off his talent as a guitarist and singer. It seemed the first was for Hugh to play songs from his solo career whilst the second was to play all the old hits from The Stranglers days. To be honest if I had closed my eyes, I could have been at a Stranglers gig. Hugh’s voice has not changed since those days and he still sounded exactly like he did in The

T. Rextasy At Ferneham Hall Ferneham hall in Fareham was definitely a different venue. It wasn’t like the dimly lit pubs or bars I normally go to, to watch the local bands. However, T. Rextasy are not a small-time local band. T. Rextasy are a tribute to the 1967-77 rock band T-Rex fronted by Marc Bolan. They are the worlds only official tribute to the music of T-Rex and Fareham was lucky enough to play host to them for one night. The show was a very intimate gig. The band entered the stage all looking as if it were still the 1960’s right down to the flared trousers. I was surprised to see that the singer actually looked a lot like Marc Bolan with the long curly hair. The gig was a fully acoustic set. It was nice seeing this as it’s a bit different tot see popular songs performed in a more stripped back raw style. I like acoustic gigs as they do feel a lot more intimate which is definitely what T. Rextasy were going for with this particular show. Not just with the music but with the overall feel of the band. They would stop in-between songs and talk to the audience laugh and even crack jokes with members at the front which was nice. It made them more humanized as we as people hold these idols on a pedestal but when these people act just like us its
always nice to see. All the big songs were performed including my favorite “Ride A White Swan.” It was really cool to hear this one done on an acoustic guitar. T. Rextasy also had a string section with them. They were brought on toward the end of the first half before the intermission. For the young readers out there, an intermission is like a short break they sometimes have in theatre or old films. The string section were excellent and really added another dimension to the songs. Also, I really like when bands change their songs up by adding other sections like a string section. You think it may not work with a rock band yet strangely enough it really did work and I thought this was a really good idea and nice touch. The band were extremely polite when the show finished and they thanked us all and left the stage. Now to be honest I’m a bit snobby when it comes to covers bands but T. Rextasy have changed my mind about covers bands as they were great and I hope to see them again soon. Rufus will be joined by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on Friday 28th February at The White Rock Theatre on Hastings iconic sea front, for a spectacular evening of songs from his eclectic discography.
The festival opens on Wednesday 26th February with a concert by one of the UK’s most successful songwriters of all time – Guy Chambers, whose 50 year career has seen Guy write and produce for some of the world’s most popular artists including Robbie Williams, Kylie Minogue, Diana Ross, Tom Jones, Tina Turner, Mark Ronson and Rufus Wainwright to name but a few. Performing songs at the piano including tracks taken from his new album Go Gently Into the Light. The festival continues on Thursday 27th February with Reuben James, one of the UK’s most exciting young singer-songwriters and performers best known for his on-going collaborations with Sam Smith. Reuben co-wrote the title track from Sam Smith’s most recent album The Thrill Of It All, as well as the song Him and the festival is delighted he is bringing his 10 piece band which explores the boundaries between jazz and pop. The festival welcomes Claire Martin OBE, the Queen of British Jazz to Hastings on Thursday 5th March at St Mary in The Castle with a stellar line-up of Claire’s music friends including some of the jazz world’s great artists including Liane Carroll, Alex Garnett and The Swedish Trio. Oscar winning composer and songwriter Rachel Portman OBE will perform and be interviewed about her extensive career during this unique production on Friday 6th March at St Mary in the Castle, specially produced for Hastings International Piano Festival. Rachel has written over 100 scores for film, television and film and is the first woman to win an Academy Award for film music for the film Emma and went on to be nominated twice more for Cider House Rules and Chocolat, which also earned her a Golden Globe nomination. Rachel’s performance will include special collaborations with local pianists giving them a once in a lifetime opportunity to perform with a globally renowned artist. Hastings International Piano Festival Classical Gala Concert with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra takes place at The White Rock Theatre on Saturday 29th March with a spectacular programme of piano concertos performed by an array of artists including the illustrious pianist and BBC Young Musician of The Year Martin
