Let’s talk Garden Design & Plants
Do you long to be inspired by that little something to make your garden a special area to enjoy? A design that truly enhances the exterior of our homes and adds value to our property? Garden Design has never been more popular, yet most of us still universally believe it is ‘something anyone can do’. In some ways, it is true. Many gardens are quite breathtakingly beautiful where a designer has not set foot inside the garden gate.
A Designer’s Hand
This is fine for those who are happy to potter and let the years, toil and ultimate experience take care of how their gardens will look a couple of decades later. The rest of humanity needs a helping – or a designer’s hand! – to obtain quickly and effortlessly a captivating garden. This is because most of us lead very busy lives and we want someone else to create for us what we don’t have time to create for ourselves.
Skilful Planning
Furthermore, most of us want a garden with the minimum of maintenance and to achieve the balance between something that is attractive and requires little attention, needs skilful planning. Today, great garden design needs to depict a lifestyle that reflects stylish 21st century living where the trend for expanding our living areas beyond the four walls of our homes, comes complete with outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, elaborate lighting and all weather garden sofas.
Flower Power
Garden design is also all about the plants in your borders. Plants add the finishing touches to the hard landscaping and requires careful planning, especially if you are looking for a low maintenance garden. The expertise of horticulturists will help you select plants, shrubs and trees most suited to your garden. Not just in terms of form and size, but in colour and all year round interest. Some gardens do not require a total redesign but often just a revamp of borders and this is where a Planting Plan is most useful.
Emerging Trends
So what does 2019 hold in terms of emerging trends? Some of the past trends are returning with the bolder colours of orange and bright yellow to replace the softer hues of recent years. Additionally, on the hard landscaping side crazy paving is becoming increasingly popular despite its fall from grace for a couple of decades. With so many options available to us, choice of materials and plants can be daunting. If you want a truly stunning lifestyle garden, you really do need the talented eye of a good designer and the expertise of a knowledgeable horticulturist. Funeral Myths busted A H Freemantle hold hundreds of funeral plans on behalf of clients, that we believe to be good value for money and safe. Increasingly however, people are approaching us who, we feel, have been mis sold a product.
Are there any cancellation charges?
Over 200,000 financial funeral products are taken out each year which means big business for large companies. The aim of a funeral plan is to safeguard your money until it’s needed, ensuring that it’s used to provide the funeral you have paid for.
Is it possible to cancel the plan if circumstances change, for example if you’ve arranged for your spouse’s funeral but you later separate?
But buyer beware! Funeral plans are not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority or any other statutory regulator. Even though a pre-paid plan resembles an insurance product, the law exempts providers from regulation by the FCA if they put customers’ money either into a trust or a “whole of life” insurance policy. The vast majority of – if not all – providers make use of these exemptions. This also means consumers are unable to complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service and have no protection if a provider goes out of business... plus funeral plans may well not cover everything that is needed for a funeral. SO here are some questions you should definitely ask when taking out a plan:
6
Magazine
contactus@loopmagazine.net
What exactly is included in the plan and what potential costs are not? Could there be any other expenses for the funeral, and what happens if there are?
Does the plan allow you to choose the funeral director? What if your chosen funeral director goes out of business? What happens if the person the funeral is intended for dies abroad or away from home? If you pay by instalments, how long do you do this for and do you have to pay interest? What happens if there are outstanding instalments at death? What freedom do you have to change the details of your funeral plan? Please don’t be caught out when it matters most. Portsmouth Hospitals Charity Shop calls on local residents for help. Local charity, Portsmouth Hospitals Charity based at Queen Alexandra Hospital is calling on residents from Portsmouth and the surrounding areas to help with donated stock for their charity shop.
“Many people often take the New Year as an opportunity to have a clear out. We would gratefully accept any unwanted gifts that people may have received over Christmas or items which are still in good condition and could be loved again! People often don’t realise that items that they no longer want could actually help to purchase an exciting piece of hospital equipment” – Julia, Portsmouth Hospitals Charity Shop Manager
Having experienced a busy period over Christmas, the Portsmouth Hospitals Charity Shop is now very low on donated goods and urgently requires donations. Located on C-Level near the North Entrance of Queen Alexandra Hospital, the Portsmouth Hospitals Charity Shop significantly helps to raise money for all Wards and Departments across Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust. The majority of items sold on the shop floor are either pre-loved goods or unwanted items generously donated by members of the local community. Last year, the Charity Shop raised a significant amount of money, which contributed to purchasing state-of-the-art equipment and enhancing a patient’s
We are looking for items such as homeware, china, general bric-à-brac, books, children’s toys, jewellery and complete puzzles and games all of which are in a good and resalable condition. To donate items, please take these directly to the Portsmouth Hospitals Charity Shop on C-Level near to the North Entrance at Queen Alexandra Hospital. HEALTH & WELLBEING
I have been diagosed with Parkinson’s Disease, will exercises help me? Most people get their Parkinson’s diagnosis when their symptoms have become obviously noticeable and one or more aspects of movement has been affected. Usually symptoms significantly improve when one starts to take medication. What role, if any, does engaging in physical activity and/or exercises play in improving the Parkinson’s symptoms? Short answer: a lot! If you have not been exercising or had stopped because of you Parkinson’s symptoms, get back to exercises as soon as possible. Research evidence supporting the value of exercises in Parkinson’s has continued to grow. However, the right kind of exercises at optimal intensity and frequency is required to maximise the benefit of exercises on Parkinson’s symptoms.
This where PD Warrior exercises can be helpful to you. PD Warrior exercises were created by expert neurological physiotherapist using the best available research evidence. They are designed to help slow down Parkinson’s Disease i.e. to slow down the loss of dopamine producing neurons in the brain. These exercises are also designed to help one move better and therefore, overcome some of the difficulties experienced as result of Parkinson’s.
How can I start PD Warrior exercises?
It is advised to start PD Warrior exercises with the guidance from a PD Warrior Instructor. The PD Warrior Instructor will assess your capability for exercises and determine with you what exercises will help you and then teach you how to perform the exercises. Once you and the Instructor are happy with your performance, you may continue with the exercises on your own or you can choose to join a PD Warrior exercise class; normally once per week. Businesswoman launches online portal and website for the Hair and Beauty industry
With an average of 12 new salons opening every week across the UK, do we really know how experienced or qualified these professionals are ?
Kerrie Humphrys has already made her name through previously owning two successful salons in Hampshire and has now set up an online portal and website www. locateyourlook.co.uk which independently reviews and rates businesses and professionals within the industry for you.
“The response has been amazing so far but now we need to get the word out there and let people know why we are doing it.”

Kerrie said “I have been in the industry for the past 32 years and there was nothing out there that provides people with the information they need before booking a service. So many people were coming into my salon, and citing bad experiences from some other service providers that had little or no experience. I decided to do something about it.” After months of researching and planning Kerrie finally launched Locate Your Look in 2018. The business is in its infancy but is already showing signs that it is delivering to service providers and their potential new customers what they deserve.
With such a wide choice it can be hard for customers to determine who can provide the excellent customer service and experience that everyone deserves. Locate Your Look “Where Great Customer Service Matters” www.locateyourlook.co.uk

Motivation is nothing without action! With the new year, great intentions are concocted and motivations roused. But motivation alone is not enough. It is not tangible or measurable. It is vital that you act upon this motivation and set about making the path to your goals. Remember that fire that got you started and use it to drive you forward, especially when your motivation is low.
Workout descriptions WORKOUT 1
1 Medicine ball lunge with twist Stand tall, hold the medicine ball in both hands extended out at chest level. Step forward into a lunge with your left foot, making sure your knee doesn’t go past your foot and keep your arms straight. Niw twist to the left as far as you can, keeping your arms extended. Return back to center and repeat on the other side.
2 Uneven push ups Set up in a push up position with one hand on a medicine ball. Keeping your core tight and body tensed, lower yourself down to the bottom position. Push back up, making sure to keep as stable as possible with the pressure in the ball. Perform 5 per side and then switch hands.
If you feel like quitting, remember this: Your results are a mirror of your effort, a direct consequence of the work you put in. When discomfort sets in, push harder, because it’s building a stronger body, a stronger mind and a stronger character. It’s a process that makes you able to push even further next time. So don’t listen to any excuses that it’s too dark, too early or too cold. Focus on your goal, face your discomfort and get it done!!!
WORKOUT 1
Is 5 rounds of 30 seconds work and 30 seconds rest.
WORKOUT 2
Is a descending ladder of 25-20-15-10-5 reps of each movement, alternating. So you do 25 reps of each movement, then 20 and so on. As always, you can find me on the following social media accounts: FACEBOOK: Search ‘Average Geoff’ INSTAGRAM: @Average.geoff Have a great day! 20

3 Medicine ball squats Holding the medicine ball in both hands at chest level, feet slightly wider than hip-width apart. Squat down as if you’re sitting back in a chair. Keep weight in your heels, chest up, and knees behind toes while dropping your hips down until they’re parallel with your knees. Keep your core tight and press the medicine ball out in front of you. Squeeze your glutes (butt) as if you were trying to hold a pound coin inbetween your cheeks and stand back up, bringing the ball back to your chest. Stand tall with the medicine ball in both hands in front of your chest. Step at an angle with your left foot, while simultaneously reaching the medicine ball towards your toes. Push off your left foot to stand back up and pivot on your toes while swinging medicine ball diagonally (it will end up over your right shoulder). Make sure to keep a firm grip or you’ll have some unhappy workout buddies!

4 Medicine ball wood chop Stand tall with the medicine ball in both hands in front of your chest.
5 Plank Setup in a high plank with your hands on the ball. You’ll have to have your hand slightly to the sides of the ball and squeeze them together hard to keep tension and balance. Squeeze your glutes and keep your body straight. Hold that position for the allotted time.
2 Push ups Set up at the top of a high plank position with hands shoulder width apart. Lower yourself down, making sure not to let your elbows flare out. Once your chest touches the floor, drive back up again, keeping your glutes tensed and core braced. If this is a bit too tough right now, put your knees on the floor to reduce the resistance.
Mango chilli salmon noodles (recipe below) Sweet, fiery and bloody lovely!! This meal is packed with flavour and colour and it’s a fiddle to make.
Ingredients:
1 salmon fillet 1 pack of straight wok noodles 80g sugarsnap peas 1 spring onion, sliced Small bunch of fresh coriander
WORKOUT 2
1 Kettlebell swings Start off with the kettlebell between your feet and slightly in front of you. Choose a Kettlebell that challenges you but allows you to maintain good form. Remember that this is a hip hinge movement and not an upper body exercise. Stand tall, still gripping the kettlebell with both hands in an overhand grip.. Squeezing your shoulders blades together and engaging your core. Soften knees, shift your bodyweight into heels, and push your butt back and down toward the wall behind you. Driving through heels, explode through hips to send weight swinging upward from quads. Aim for chest height, with arms extended. Achieving this finish position requires you to snap your hips through, contracting your core while squeezing glutes. As the kettlebell begins to descend, let the weight do the work as you ready your body for the next rep. Shift weight back into heels while hinging at the hips and loading both the hamstrings and glutes. Receive the weight, allowing the kettlebell to ride back between legs.
Sauce:
1/4 red chilli 1 tbsp sesame oil 1/2 tsp fish oil 1 tbsp soi sauce 1 tbsp honey 40g fresh mango, chopped
Method:
Mix up the sauce ingredients and sit to one side. Heat a little sesame oil in a pan or wok, add a little salt and pepper to the salmon and place skin side down in the pan. Cook on a medium heat until cooked through and keep warm in tinfoil. Now add the noodles, peas and half the onion and coriander and half the sauce to the pan until the noodles are cooked through. Get those noodles in a bowl and top with the salmon, remaining sauce, coriander and spring onions.

In case you missed it, the episode is available on My 5 until January 2020: https://www.my5.tv/live-do-the-right-thing/season-2/ episode-2 During the report, they raised awareness of The Little Book of Big Scams, which is put together by the Metropolitan Police and is crammed with good advice. VirusTotal
In the words of the proverb it is better to be safe than sorry, and this applies to computer files and websites as much as anything else. If you have a new file from an as yet untrusted source, or you are unsure about a web page that you may want to visit, it is wise to check it before using it, just in case it contains malicious content. You probably have some anti-virus software running, but can it find everything? This is where VirusTotal becomes useful. Simply upload the new file or paste the website address to the VirusTotal website and it will test it using >70 antivirus scanners and URL/domain blacklisting services - and it is very quick too. https://www.virustotal.com
Freeing up Disk Space in Windows 10
Microsoft have announced that in the next major release of Windows 10, the update will reserve 7GB of your device’s storage 24

to ensure successful completion. So, if you are running low on free disk space, what can you do?
Windows 10 Settings
If you are running Windows 10, you can use Settings => Storage => Free Up Space Now. Of particular interest is Windows Update Clean-up. Windows keeps copies of all installed updates, even after installing newer versions. This clean-up deletes or compresses older versions that are no longer needed and are taking up space.
SearchMyFiles
Another thing to do is to locate and remove duplicate files, and we have identified a useful tool to help with that. SearchMyFiles is a free tool from utility software company NirSoft, which has a Duplicates Search mode. No installation is required to run SearchMyFiles – just download it and execute it. Start freeing up space now: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/ searchmyfiles-x64.zip
WinDirStat
After removing duplicate files, the next thing to do is find out which remaining files are taking up all the space. Our choice of software to do that is WinDirStat. In our test, we found that >25% of the disk space was taken by MP4 files (videos). Returning to SearchMyFiles and performing a search for *.MP4 files identified the culprits! Find your space hogs: https://www.fosshub.com/ WinDirStat.html
(Problem) Steps Recorder
Sometimes when you have a problem it can be hard to explain to your support professional. It can be helpful to capture exactly what happened, and that is where the Steps Recorder (Problem Steps Recorder in Windows 7 & 8.1) can come in handy. After it is launched, it records the detail of the steps you executed up to the point of the problem and lets you save them into a zip file that you can share with person helping you. Select the Start button, and then select Windows Accessories => (Problem) Steps Recorder and then Start Record. Now reproduce the problem and when you are done, select Stop Record => Save. Fareham College Principal makes Queen’s New Year’s Honours list 2019
Fareham College restaurant, Avenue 141, receives top industry accreditations
The Principal of Fareham College, Nigel Duncan has been awarded an OBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list 2019, the annual recognition of achievements and service of extraordinary people across Britain.
Fareham College’s hospitality and catering department has been recognised for the quality of its training restaurant and teaching with a duo of prestigious industry awards.
Awarded the OBE for his services to Further Education, Nigel’s career spans nearly 40 years, beginning as a lecturer at Solihull College of Technology in 1981, before moving to work at Lowestoft College as Senior Lecturer and Deputy Head of Department in Health, where he was promoted to Director of Faculty for Vocational and Technical Studies. After 14 years at Lowestoft College, Nigel then moved to West Herts College as Director of Curriculum. In 2004 Nigel graduated with a Master’s Degree in Business Administration in Educational Management from the University of Leicester. Nigel is also a Fellow of the Institute for Learning. Nigel joined Fareham College in 2005 as Vice Principal Curriculum and Corporate Development, where he was responsible for all aspects of curriculum design, development and delivery, quality and the student experience. In March 2012, Nigel was appointed as Principal and Chief Executive at Fareham College and in this role he has the executive strategic responsibility for the quality of the College’s provision, the financial integrity of the business and the safety of all that use the College. As Principal, Nigel has been integral to the College’s success. In 2014, Fareham College opened its Centre of Excellence in Engineering, Manufacturing and Advanced Skills Training (CEMAST), a leading centre in the UK for apprenticeships and technical qualifications. The College was also judged ‘outstanding’ at its most recent Ofsted inspection and last year was named best FE college in the country by the TES. Nigel, who is due to retire later this year and sees the award as a very special way to end his career, said, “I am delighted to be awarded an OBE. It is a fantastic honour, one that I will cherish forever. I would like to thank the amazing team at Fareham College. They do an excellent job in helping me make the College an outstanding place where people achieve and go on to find career success. I couldn’t have done it without their support.”
Avenue 141, Fareham College’s training restaurant, based at its Bishopsfield Road Campus, has been awarded a Highly Commended AA College Rosette Accreditation and Gold Accreditation and Centre of Excellence for Food and Beverage. The AA College Rosette scheme, in partnership with People 1st, is designed to reflect current industry trends within real working environments. It is a coveted award in the hospitality industry and assesses the whole dining experience, including service, hospitality, venue and food. Highly Commended restaurants are commercially focused and compete well within a true restaurant environment. Restaurants at this level are likely to have a clear brand and excellent links to industry. Service levels are highly polished, with clear support from lecturers as well as peer to peer learning. Fareham College has also been awarded the Gold Accreditation and Centre of Excellence for Food and Beverage by People 1st, a stamp of approval from the industry that endorses the quality of training the students receive. The accreditation identifies colleges and providers that deliver excellent full-time or classroom-based hospitality training. It also highlights those that have developed effective employer links, encouraging them to influence the design and delivery of the training programmes. The Gold Accreditation has been awarded to Fareham College’s Avenue 141 Restaurant for consecutive years for its outstanding approach and commitment to matching learners’ skills with employers’ needs. Director of Faculty, Ashley Michael, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded this honour. Avenue 141’s dedicated team of staff and learners are to be congratulated on achieving consistent excellence year on year. To be acknowledged by People 1st and the AA for excellence is reflective of the exceptionally high standards that we exceed daily in Avenue 141. “Having achieved Gold Accreditation and AA Highly Commended awards not only gives our current learners an incredible platform from which to embark on a career in Hospitality and Catering, but it also validates the outstanding quality and service that our public training restaurant offers our customers.” Fareham College Principal, Nigel Duncan, added: “For a college training restaurant to achieve these accolades is truly amazing. Fareham College prides itself on offering the highest standard of training and customer experience. These awards acknowledge that working and dining in Avenue 141 is as close to what would be experienced in the hospitality industry as you can get.” For further information about booking your Avenue 141 experience, please visit www.avenue-141.co.uk or call 01329 81540.

Fareham Nomads take first weekend of the Hampshire County ASA Swimming Championships by storm
2
3
Fareham Nomads Swimming Club entered their largest team for many years into the Hampshire County ASA Swimming Championship 2019 which started last weekend (18th, 19th and 20th). The first weekend of the championships started off with a haul of 12 medals (3 x gold, 1 x silver and 8 x bronze). The club saw 44 swimmers competing in 32 events and overall achieved a very impressive 31 long course personal best times. The shining star from the first weekend was most definitely 14-year-old Charlie Holyer who took home 3 gold medals and 1 bronze in the Boys Age 14 - 800m Freestyle, 400m Freestyle, 1500m Freestyle and 400m Individual Medley events respectively. Purely remarkable results considering the recent unfortunate upheavals that the club has experienced including the head coach suffering serious injuries following a road traffic accident and the loss of one of the training pools which has substantially reduced the training available to our swimmers. To overcome problems of this type in the future the club plan to build their own pool. We are seeking to get local businesses and entrepreneurs to become involved. If you’re interested in this venture, then please contact our Chair – Emma Rowsell on chair@farehamnomads.co.uk Stewart Crowe – Coach, said: ‘This has been a fantastic start to the Hampshire County ASA Championships 2019, we have more competitive swimmers being accepted and I am really proud of the achievements of the younger swimmers and the support of our teaching and coaching team.’ If you’re interested in joining Fareham Nomads Swimming Club, please visit www.farehamnomads.co.uk to find out more.

Full Lunar Eclipse, moon is completely in earth’s shadow, it was very dark and hard to see 05:12am GMT
April 2019
5th April New Moon, (0851 UTC) The Moon being on the same side of the earth as the Sun, it will not be visible in the night’s sky. 11th April Mercury will be at its greatest elongation, reaching greatest western elongation of 27.7 degrees from the sun. This will allow mercury to be at its highest point in the horizon in the east where the sun rises in the morning. The best time to view it is before sunrise. 19th April Full Moon. (11:12 UTC) The moon will be at the opposite side of the earth than the sun its face will be fully visible. This Moon is known as the native Americans as a Full Pink Moon because It marks the appearance of wild ground phlox, one of the first spring flowers. Also known as the Sprouting Grass moon, the Growing Moon and the Egg Moon. Coastal tribes know it as the Full Fish Moon because of native shad fish swimming upstream to spawn. 22nd/23rd April Lyrids Meteor Shower. Usually produces 20 meteors per hour at its peak. It originates from dust particles left behind by a comet called C/1861 G1 Thatcher, discovered in 1861. It occurs annually between the 16th and the 25th of April. Peaks on the night of the 22nd morning of the 23rd. sometimes these meteors can create bright dust trails lasting a few seconds. The waning gibbous moon will block the fainter ones this year. But if you are patient, best viewing is from a dark location after midnight, meteors will radiate from Lyra constellation but can appear anywhere in the sky.
May 2019
4th May New Moon, (22:46 UTC) The moon will be on the same side as earth as the sun, the best time of the month to observe galaxies and star clusters without interference from the moonlight. 6th/7th May Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower An above average shower, producing up to 60 meteors per hour at its peak. Most activity can be seen in the southern hemisphere, but here in Hampshire, there will be a rate of 30 meteors pet hour. Produced by particles of dust left over by comet Halley, an ancient comet. The shower runs every year from April 19th – May 28th. There will be a think crescent moon setting early, the meteors will radiate from the Aquarius Constellation but could appear anywhere in the sky. 10th May Full Moon, (21:11 UTC) Blue Moon is known as it is the 3rd of the 4th full moons in the season. The moon will be at the opposite side of the earth than the sun its face will be fully visible. Known by Native Americans as the Full Flower Moon as this is the first time of the year spring flowers appear in abundance. Also known as Full Corn Planting Moon, and the Milk Moon. This rare calendar event only occurs every few years, giving rise to the expression, once in a blue moon! As there are normally only 3 full moons per season, blue ones occur averagely every 2.7 years.

SPACE TIMES
Competition for young space Entrepreneurs lifts off
The UK Space Agency is offering young people expert advice and a share of £50,000 for their ideas of how satellites could improve life on Earth. Published 10 January 2019. UK Space Agency and MP Chris Skidmore. The SatelLife Competition, now in its third year, is looking for innovative proposals that have the potential to use data collected from space to benefit our economy, health or the environment.
This competition could be your first step to an exciting career in the space sector as you identify how satellites can provide unique solutions to the everyday challenges we face here on Earth.
Ideas from last year’s competition included a wristband that uses satellite location data and communications services to identify the locations of swimmers and surfers in the sea and a tool that would map change in urban areas using satellites and algorithms, identifying where building is taking place and potential sites for development.
Entries can be as teams or individuals and all prize winners will be able to pitch their idea to a panel of ‘dragons’ from the space sector who will offer more prizes. Over the last two years the competition winners have been offered further funding, patent advice and invitations to discuss job opportunities as well as introductions to the other relevant experts for further help.
Satellites support the economy and everyday life, and this competition gives young people the chance to test their ideas with industry experts and perhaps one day become part of the fastest growing sector of the UK economy. The UK space industry is a success story – it supports 38,000 jobs and generates just under £14 billion in revenue across the country. Science minister Chris Skidmore said: “Young people are bursting with ingenious ideas and this competition offers a great opportunity for their suggestions about how best to use data collected from satellites.” “I would urge young people to get involved and hopefully their ideas will become a reality in the near future, benefiting us all. The competition is a great example of how the government’s modern Industrial Strategy can inspire and engage young people in the challenges and opportunities of the future.” The competition, which is open to those aged 11 to 22 and split into three age groups, aims to support the development of science, data handling and technological skills. There are two overall prizes of £7,500 for the best individual and best team. A further seven entries from across the age categories will win £5,000, making a total prize fund of £50,000. The judging panel will be made up of experts including representatives from the UK Space Agency, the European Space Agency, the Satellite Applications Catapult in Harwell and industry. Gemma Wilson, Knowledge Exchange Manager at the Satellite Applications Catapult and one of the expert judges, said: “The SatelLife Competition is a fantastic opportunity for future space entrepreneurs to showcase their innovative ideas.” 36

Jay Geddes Recipe Page Pea soup, honey roasted gammon and crispy egg Gammon: 1 gammon steak 1 carrot, finely sliced 1 onion, finely sliced 1 bay leaf 5 sprigs of thyme 5 peppercorns 1 1/2 tbsp of dijon mustard 3 tbsp of honey Pea soup: 500g of frozen peas 1000ml of water 1 sprig of mint Salt Black pepper Crispy egg: 6 eggs 60g of plain flour 60g of breadcrumbs 40ml of white wine vinegar 650ml of water Salt Pea Salad: 280g of fresh peas Fresh mint 1 lemon olive oil Salt Pepper Method 1. Preheat the oven to 170˚C/gas mark 3 2. Place the gammon, vegetables, herbs and peppercorns in an oven dish and cover with water. Place in the oven and braise for 1 1/2 hours 3. Meanwhile, prepare the rest of the dish. For the soup, bring the water to the boil. As it reaches boiling point, add the mint and then the frozen peas, cover with a lid until it returns to the boil
4. Remove from the heat, strain the peas and mint, reserving 2 cups of the hot liquid. Remove the mint as this was only used to infuse and will not be blended with the peas 5. Blend on a high speed until you are left with a soup, adding the cooking liquid gradually until you reach the desired consistency. Season to taste and pass through a fine sieve into a bowl set over ice to cool. Store in the fridge until required 6. Pod the fresh peas, then blanch in some lightly salted boiling water for 30 seconds. Refresh the peas in iced water to stop the cooking process, then pop the peas out of their skins 7. Whisk the oil and lemon juice together with a little seasoning until it comes together. Set aside until ready to serve 8. Once the gammon is cooked, remove from the oven and leave to cool in the stock 9. To prepare the crispy eggs, bring a large pot of water to a simmer and pour in the white wine vinegar. Crack the eggs into individual cups and gently pour each egg in the water. Maintain a very gentle simmer until the whites are cooked but the yolks are still soft and runny. Remove from the water with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper 10. Add flour, the remaining beaten eggs and the breadcrumbs to separate bowls. Roll each egg in the flour, followed by the egg, and finally the breadcrumbs and set aside. For a thicker, crispier finish, repeat the egg and breadcrumb stages for each egg. 11. Before serving, reheat the soup in a pan on the hob. Meanwhile, place the shelled peas, pea shoots and fresh mint leaves in a bowl and dress with the lemon juice and olive oil dressing 12. Slice the cooled gammon steaks into lardons, mix together the honey and mustard to form a glaze over the gammon. Sauté the lardons in the glaze in a hot pan until golden 13. Deep fry the eggs at 180°C until crispy and golden, then drain on kitchen paper and season with some salt 14. Divide the salad between plates, sprinkle over some gammon lardons then finish with a crispy egg. Transfer the soup into a pouring jug and serve immediately. contactus@loopmagazine.net

Keeping kids safe in their digital world The on-line world can be an amazing place; research, learning new skills, games, videos, friendships and organising activities to name but a few! It can enrich our children’s lives greatly but like anything we enjoy, it brings associated risks. We want to raise awareness of the possible dangers our children face and provide a few suggestions to help reduce those risks.
images can pop up; everything from violence, bad language, sexual words or images to “guidance” on how to self-harm. The impact of seeing inappropriate material can be devastating and have long term effects. Even seemingly innocent music videos (think Little Mix) or perfume adverts, for example, can expose children to over sexualised imagery, often reinforcing stereotypes i.e. men in suits and women in…well not much! The problem comes when young people place similar photos on Instagram and Snapchat, or post videos on TikTok. Once on social media, all control of those images is lost and anyone can copy, alter or share them, which unfortunately leads us onto our next concern.
Inapropriate Content
Inapropriate Contact
We’ve all done it - searched for something perfectly innocent online and got more than we bargained for! You can also probably think of an image you will never be able to get out of your mind. Well, our children are no different. While they are researching homework, on social media and watching YouTube videos all sorts of 38

The more time children spend on the internet, chat rooms and social media, the more at risk they are from cyber-bullying (covered in the next issue) and sexual predators. Children can be groomed online by a stranger or someone they know - they can be male or female and any age. Sadly, there has been a massive increase in the
number of children involved in sexual activity online and there is a strong link between how early children are being exposed to pornography and the increase in sexualised behaviour. Children can walk into situations with their eyes wide open, not recognising grooming for what it is; they do not see themselves as victims. One of the reasons social media services require users to be 13+ is due to younger children not being able to discern what is appropriate to post, read or recognise when they are being targeted. In our visits to schools on average 25% of the 9-year-olds we see are already on social media.
So what steps can we take?
Make sure they know to;
• Keep their personal information private • Not to have friends they do not know in real life • Always be kind • Tell an adult if they see something that makes them feel uncomfortable or inappropriate. The internet is part of their everyday life and while we cannot wrap our children in bubble wrap, we can make sure we have educated ourselves and help teach them how to keep themselves safe in their digital world.
Add parental controls to your router which filter out pornography, bad language, gambling and other harmful content from devices connecting to
ThinkUKnow, NSPCC and SaferInternet.org have really great information on all of this and of course visit us on Facebook or Twitter for updates or contact www.cwtcheducation.com
your WIFI. At our workshops parents often tell us that they are afraid of “messing about with their settings” but you can’t break it, so just have a play or google how to do it. Some mobile devices will have their own settings too but if you are concerned that these are not enough while your children are not using your WIFI we suggest an app like ScreenTime.
Cwtch Education is a charity dedicated to educating children, and those who care for them, about how to keep safe online and in relationships; including cyberbullying, self-esteem, social media use, exploitation and gaming. Next time: Social media, mental health and cyberbullying
None of this of course is failsafe so the best defence is having conversations about on-line safety with our children, from a young age, as we would when teaching them to cross the road. contactus@loopmagazine.net

In The Trenches
FASHION
Thomas Marrington discoverss the Trench Coat, the very best in transistional dressing
My wardrobe consists of four main colourways - black, white, blue and beige. Not only do I find these shades complementary to my personal colouring, but they share the trait of neutrality, blending together seamlessly to create a cohesive look in whatever way I may pair them. Of these, I consider beige to be the most versatile. Depending on the particular shade it can be warmed up or cooled down, dark or light, working equally well on thick wool as it does on cheesecloth. Take the classic trench for example, the piece de resistance in transitional dressing. It’s no accident that Burberry, consistently one of the greatest fashion houses for wearable and classic design, features beige so heavily. In their SS19 show, Kendall Jenner took to the runway decked head to toe in a dusty beige of different textures; that same season, the usually maximalist Balmain chose beige suede for another monochromatic look, followed closely by Kenzo, Tibi, Tom Ford, Christian Dior… and the list goes on.
“Less a trend and more a style staple, A beige TRENCH COAT works particularly well for those TRANSITIONAL PERIODS.” Trench COAT, Zara, £119
Less of a trend and more a sustaining style staple, beige works particularly well for Trench those spring periods where a COAT, winter coat feels out of the H&M, question, but so too does £24.99 stepping out in just a tee. A lightweight trench is the key to pulling together almost any look during this time, and the good news is that virtually every high street store in the UK sells their own take on the garment. My favourites, as ever, hail from Zara and H&M - whilst the former might prove too thick come May, H&M’s is a little more lightweight with a pleasing shine to it when it moves. contactus@loopmagazine.net

Great Road Trips of the USA The USA continues to be a top seller in the UK tourist market and it is easy to see why with such stunning scenery, awe inspiring canyons and some of the world’s most Iconic manmade structures. With so much to see, holidays in the USA tend to be multi centre itineraries, and the best way to get around is by car, with the low cost of fuel, the plentiful supply of hotels and motels along the popular routes and reasonably uncongested roads (outside of the big cities), it all makes for a great adventure.
At Amity Travel Tailor Made we find the most popular self-drive holidays to be to the Canyon lands and National Parks of the Western States and/or the Pacific Coast. Amity Travel have been tailoring such holidays to suite your own personal requirements for many years and can not only save you time and money but take away all the stress of arranging such complicated itineraries. With so much to see it is difficult to know where to start, for many the bright lights of Las Vegas are a fun filled introduction to the Wild West before heading off to the awe inspiring Grand Canyon National Park, the unique Bryce Canyon (Forest of Stone) is also well worth visiting and for many clients it turns out to be the surprise highlight. Zion National Park is another must stop with its towering red 44

granite walls, the park has some fantastic nature trails where you may catch site of a Skunk or ring tailed cat as well as Peregrine Falcons and Eagle. Whilst for something more unusual Death Valley, on the border of Nevada & California with its desert of streaming sand dunes, multi coloured rocks and water fluted canyons will make for some great photo opportunities, there is also the chance to join a ranger on a tour of the historic mining sites and sun drenched salt flats. Further north and a park that fits in well with San Francisco and the Pacific Coast is Yosemite National Park and the legendary Giant Sequoias, just 3 hours east of San Francisco, Yosemite is one of the best known parks and there is something for everyone here from stargazing and moonlight wildlife tours to rock climbing and rafting as well as Yosemite Mule Ride Adventures where you can enjoy the
breath-taking views and majestic scenery of this incredible national park. Depending on your time The Pacific Coast line has much to offer and can be added to a National Parks and Canyonlands tour or as a standalone itinerary, starting with San Francisco; this is unquestionably one of the best loved cities in the USA. Home to the Golden Gate Bridge, Cable Cars, Alcatraz, Pier 39 and Chinatown, this city is instantly recognisable, Alcatraz is the major highlight for many and advance booking is always recommended. The drive south from San Francisco along state highway 1, taking in Monterey and Carmel, you can go whale watching off the Monterey Coast where Humpback Whales can be found from Spring right through to Autumn. Continue driving South taking in the stunning views of the Pacific coastal road known as the Big Sur, this is a great way to end or start your time in California, and don’t forget to visit a winery or two along the way with plenty of options in the Napa Valley just north of San Francisco and also at San Luis Obispo in the Central Coast Wine Country, north of Los Angeles. You may well be thinking that such a full-on itinerary is not going to be cheap, but it does not have to cost an arm and a leg either, with some great deals on flights outside of the school holidays and with a mixture of good quality hotels, National park lodges and motel accommodation it can work out very reasonable indeed. How One Family’s Tragic Loss has Inspired a Million Smiles
extraordinary things people will do to raise funds for the charity, from sponsored head shaves to skydives” comments Community Fundraising Officer, Kathryn Grimes, “and the generosity of all who support our work.”
When 15-year old Richard Bowler set off for a training session with Sarisbury Sparks FC on 2nd July 2002 no-one could have foreseen the tragedy that was to unfold that evening. During the warm-up session, Rich collapsed. He’d suffered a sub-arachnoid brain haemorrhage (SAH) and, sadly, never regained consciousness.
Fundraising in his memory originally sought to raise £1,500 to purchase a pair of ‘memory’ benches, but quickly snow-balled and, in 2004, ‘Smile4Rich’ became the official face of fundraising for the Wessex Neurological Centre (WNC). Located at Southampton General Hospital, it provides acute/specialist neurological care to patients from across Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire, West Sussex, the Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands - a region populated by over 3 million. Each year the WNC treats around 18,000 patients for conditions such as brain haemorrhages, brain tumours, stroke, traumatic brain/spina injuries, epilepsy, dementia and numerous other neurological conditions. Now known as ‘Smile4Wessex’, the charity has since raised over £1.1million to fund numerous projects that enhance the range and quality of care provided at the WNC, and research which furthers understanding of neurological conditions and their treatment. “We never cease to be amazed at the 56

At a recent Open Day, supporters heard from leading neurosurgeons and scientists how their generosity has enabled Smile4Wessex to provide the WNC with some of the most advanced facilities and equipment available in the UK - in some cases uniquely. These include the state-of-the-art Smile4Wessex Children’s Neurosciences Ward and ‘Retreat’ Multi-Sensory Room, and cutting-edge theatre equipment such as; a revolutionary operating microscope with fluorescence imaging technology; an UltraHD 3D Endoscopic Neurosurgical Stack System; multi-channel Intra-Operative Nerve Monitoring equipment. These and other projects have already helped to improve outcomes and/or save the lives of thousands of patients, and have made possible procedures that simply could not be safely undertaken previously. Research funding is also helping to explore new ways to diagnose and treat neurological disease. For example, the Brain Pulse Project is developing a new, non-invasive method for measuring Intra Cranial Pressure (ICP), which is a key indicator in the diagnosis of many neurological conditions. Another project is developing a novel new treatment which it is hoped may help prevent secondary strokes in patients who have suffered a bleed on the brain. Appeals Director and friend of the Bowler family, Neil Westbrook, is justifiably proud of what the charity has achieved, but has never lost sight of how it all started. “Rich was a terrific lad and we’d turn the clocks back in a heartbeat if we could. Sadly, that’s not possible, but it is of some comfort to know that he inspired fundraising that has since benefited thousands, and helped many families avoid similar tragedies.” Inspired to discover more about Smile4Wessex or to get involved? Please visit www.smile4wessex.org or call the Appeal Office on 023 8120 8882.
Navy Medical Teams raise Money for Charity Two teams of medical assistants at HMS Collingwood visited two local supermarkets recently to raise money for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC).
Team at Tesco, Rowner – left to right: Marrow, Gollick, Pellatt.
Team at Morrisons, Gosport – Left to right: West, Stayte, Ullyott.
Medical Assistant (MA) Shaun West arranged the fundraising trips to Tesco in Alver Valley and Morrisons in Gosport, raising £492.41 for this very worthy cause. Talking of the event Shaun said “Local supermarkets are an ideal way for the local community to be involved in charity by donating at ease as they’re shopping. It’s a great way for the community to see their Royal Navy out doing things above and beyond their usual working roles and uphold the charitable reputation of the RN. The teams were Shaun, MA Nathan Ullyott, MA Steven Marrow, MA Olivia Gollick, MA Barry Stayte and MA Andrew Pellatt. On the day we had a lot of fun
and had so many chats with local veterans who are always willing to share their stories of their time in the military. The RNRMC do so many great things for the military community and an event like this is an all round winner.” Photographs, courtesy of Keith Woodland, Crown Copyright).

Aladdin Musical Extravaganza! Pupils from Hook-with-Warsash C of E Academy kicked off the festive season with 3 spectacular performances of Disney’s Aladdin JR. the Musical at Ferneham Hall.
WHAT’S ON years as we believe it is a wonderful opportunity for children to experience performing in a real theatre. All children from years 1 to 6 are invited to take part in the show and they loved learning all the songs and actions. We were overwhelmed by support from staff and parents who gave up their time to make sure that the show was a such a great success.”
Disney’s Aladdin JR. is based on the 1992 Academy-Award®winning film and the 2014 hit Broadway show about the “diamond in the rough” street rat who learns that his true worth lies deep within. In the story Aladdin and his three friends, Babkak, Omar, and Kassim, played by pupils from year 6, find themselves down on their luck until Aladdin discovered a magic lamp and the Genie who has the power to grant three wishes. Wanting to earn the respect of the princess, Jasmine, Aladdin embarks on an adventure that tests his will and his moral character. Year 6 were supported in their performances by pupils from years 3, 4 and 5 who made up a wonderfully colourful choir and sang their hearts out. They were also joined on stage by pupils from years 1 and 2 who formed part of the Prince’s entourage and performed some beautiful dancing. Headteacher Sara Willoughby said, “It was lovely to see how enthusiastic the pupils were to perform in Aladdin and it proved to be an extremely popular choice. We have held our annual school production at Ferneham Hall for the last 20
