Perfect Porcelain Paving We do love our gardens. There is little doubt about that! However, much as we love our gardens we also love them to be low maintenance! Luckily, new ideas and materials are constantly coming on to the market to cater for this trend, not least new paving products. Have you heard about the new kid on the block? Porcelain paving? With contemporary and sleek lines, it is becoming more popular than natural sandstone. It is almost maintenance free, apart from the usual regular sweeping and an occasional jet wash, which is one of its most attractive benefits. Porcelain is also more durable and denser than sandstone and far less porous. You will be even more pleased to learn it does not require sealing either! You can buy it in a wide range of sizes, colours, patterns and finishes. Additionally, you can generally buy larger size slabs if you have an expansive area to cover. It is quicker and easier to install and is highly resistance to scratching or marking. While it is generally a more contemporary product that sits well in urban gardens and courtyards, because porcelain tiles come in such a great range of colours and textures you can buy a more traditional looking tile that would suit a country garden too. We are in the midst of an indoor-outdoor trend and because porcelain tiles can be used internally as well as externally this is great news for those who wish to extend their homes into the gardens. With the current trend to install bi-fold to bring the garden into the house, garden rooms laid with porcelain floors then used to build a patio or terrace area creates a seamless boundary between the house and garden. www.hambrooks.co.uk 01489 572292

Helping raise awareness about harmful effects of alien species
Don’t let aliens hitch a ride!
27 March to 2 April marked this year’s Invasive Species Week, providing a chance for RYA Affiliated Clubs and Recognised Training Centres to get involved and protect their waters from invasive aquatic species by taking advantage of free signs and materials! Invasive aquatic species block up waterways, make navigation and paddling difficult and can damage boat engines and props. Many can be spread from tiny fragments, and survive out of water for over two weeks in damp conditions. Sailing clubs around the country can find out how following three simple steps can reduce the risk of spreading invasive aquatic species by requesting a free ‘Check Clean Dry’ kit from The Green Blue, the joint environment programme created by British Marine and the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), via info@thegreenblue.org.uk. Biosecurity Minister Lord Gardiner says: “Invasive species threaten the survival of our country’s native plants and animals and cost the economy at least £1.8 billion a year. Watersports enthusiasts play a key role in our battle against these threats, so it is important it is to check, clean and dry all clothing and equipment. “Simple steps such as hosing down your boat and thoroughly drying your boots help to protect the future of our native species in an environment we want to enhance.” For boating enthusiasts, invasive aquatic species like floating pennywort and water primrose block up waterways, making

Since the launch of the Check Clean Dry campaign in 2011, The Green Blue and the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) have provided a wealth of information and guidance to inland and coastal clubs about the steps they can take to minimise the spread of invasive non-native species. Invasive species are animals and plants that have been introduced by human activity (on purpose or by accident) to parts of the world where they are not normally found. These species can hitch a ride on boats and equipment and when unknowingly spread from one area to another, they can have a damaging impact on British plants, animals and ecosystems – by spreading disease, competing for habitat and food and direct predation.
How can I get involved? If you’re inspired by the great work going on to prevent invasive non-native species from spreading and reduce the impacts of those which already have, why not get involved? Help us stop the spread of invasive plants and animals in British waters – put up a Check, Clean, Dry sign to nudge fellow boaters into action. Everyone can help to prevent their spread by following the Check Clean Dry routine. While most boat users are vigilant about the risk of spreading non-native species and diseases, there is a real risk that those that aren’t could accidentally spread these organisms, harming the environment and potentially damaging the reputation of the sport. If you are visiting a site where an invasive non-native species is known to be present, you must ensure you don’t spread it. Failure to do so risks prosecution under the Wildlife & Countryside Act, 1981. The risk can be reduced by reducing the contact time in which equipment is exposed to the water. This is particularly important
for items such as trailers, which have cavities that may retain water and be hard to inspect. If possible, launching trolleys should be provided at the site and used in preference to personal equipment.
Check, Clean, Dry
Become a Check Clean Dry champion and contact The Green Blue, the joint environment programme created by the Royal Yachting Association and British Marine, for free materials you can share with other members of your Club to raise awareness. For more information, visit www.thegreenblue.org.uk
• If facilities allow, equipment can be hosed down or pressure-washed to remove debris. The washings should not be allowed to enter any watercourse or drainage system • Clothing and equipment should be thoroughly dried. Wetsuits and boots should be hung-up to dry. Equipment should be dry for 48 hours before it is used elsewhere • Particular attention must be paid to areas that retain water, remain damp or are hard to inspect • All biofouling must be completely removed and disposed of without contaminating watercourses
Take action today Access the free online training at www.nonnativespecies.org to learn more about invasive nonnative species, how to identify them, and how to prevent them from spreading.

Computer Know How!
1. A trojan horse is a program that claims to rid your computer of viruses, but instead introduces viruses to your computer.
Cyber-Attacks – A Virus Called WannaCry
2. BitCoin is a type of virtual currency.
In this edition of Computer Know How, we will be covering the recent cyber-attacks that have hit major businesses here in the UK including the NHS. You may have seen over the past week many news reports on the WannaCry virus, but what actually is it?
On a brighter note! Introducing a new Internet Browser – Vivaldi
This particular piece of malware is a type of trojan virus1 called “ransomware”. As the name suggests, this type of virus basically holds the infected computer hostage and then demands payment in order to restore access to the files on the victim’s computer.
If you are getting tired of using the same old browser day in day out, and want to try something fresh, we would definitely recommend trying out Vivaldi. It is packed full with loads of features, and is incredibly customisable.
RansomWare like WannaCry works by encrypting files on a user’s computer. After the virus has encrypted some or even all of the files, it then demands that a ransom is paid in order to decrypt those files. WannaCry demands that the victim pays a ransom of $300 in BitCoin2 at the time of infection. If they have not received payment after 3 days then the ransom is doubled. After 7 days without payment, WannaCry will delete all of the encrypted files and all data will be lost. WannaCry targets various types of files, including PDF’s, Word documents and Excel spreadsheets.
It offers features like adding a notes panel to the side so you don’t have to keep switching between programs. Vivaldi has also introduced Tab Stacking and Tab Tiling. If, like me, you tend to keep many tabs open in your browser, you can organise the view into stacks. This feature lets you group multiple tabs into one. With Tab Tiling, you can display multiple tabs side by side, or in a grid, so you can view multiple sites at the same time!
The attack is not over yet, WannaCry was first discovered on Friday 12th May and had spread to an estimated 57,000 computers in more than 150 different countries by the end of the day.
You can customise the look and feel of Vivaldi as much as you want, and there is a powerful (and colourful) history checker as well. Get an in-depth overview of your browsing habits, backed by statistics and visual data. See what you think at www.vivaldi.com Don’t forget that you can always contact us for free impartial advice. Just give us a call at Hypersonic for hardware and software support, tuition, web design, data retrieval, commercial and home networking, all with an efficient and friendly service. Call Wayne or Gareth at Hypersonic IT 01489 582666. Email: wayne@hypersonic.co.uk
This virus is most commonly received through downloading email attachments, or through clicking on links received in emails. Once on a computer, it can quickly spread through the network and infect other computers on the same network. Regardless of which operating system you use, you need to make sure it is completely up to date, including security updates immediately. Also ensure that your anti-virus software is up to date as well. As always, we recommend that you have all of your data backed up safely as well. Sadly, there is no confirmed fix for WannaCry at this time. 12 | The LOOP

Divorce... £500 + VAT * Of all the ups and downs life has to throw at us the breakdown of a relationship is one of the hardest to deal with. Whilst struggling to deal with the emotional fall out the harsh reality of considering the financial consequences is a huge burden but essential to resolve early on. When a marriage or relationship breaks down the parties have to divide between them the assets (or debts) they have accumulated. But what if they cannot agree - how can they avoid the trauma and expense of arguing the matter before a Court? First, nothing can be finalised without both parties making complete disclosure of their assets. Some people might not like this but there is no realistic alternative. Therefore, be prepared to produce copies of pay slips, bank statements, shares and building society accounts and anything else showing what money you have and where it is. It must be up to date. Secondly, remember that the children come first. They almost certainly did when you were together and that will not change just because you are now divorcing. The children will need somewhere to live. The parent they live with will need an income to provide for the children. Thirdly, get good legal advice early on from some one who is a specialist. In today’s world changes come about quickly and you need up to the minute expert advice. Perhaps you do not feel ready to take any action but need advice to understand exactly where you stand. We are good listeners and will give you balanced, considered advice to help you to have the confidence to make the decision which is right for you. 14 | The LOOP

Victory for Charities, but is your Will ‘watertight’? In a legal battle that has lasted a decade, three charities have won a final showdown at the Supreme Court and their intended share of an individual’s estate. So has this strengthened the respect for wishes of the deceased? Head of Wills, Trusts & Succession at Eric Robinson Solicitors, Emily Taylor investigates. The high profile saga of Ilott vs Miston arose out of a claim for reasonable provision under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependents) Act which was brought against the estate of Mrs Melita Jackson by her daughter, Mrs Heather Ilott, who had been estranged from her mother for 26 years before her death. When Mrs Jackson passed away in 2004 she left her Will with a letter that had been written two years previously, explaining why she had disinherited her daughter and how she preferred to leave almost all of her estate to The Blue Cross, RSPB and RSPCA. Mrs Ilott successfully challenged the Will at the High Court in 2007 and was awarded £50,000 on the basis she had been ‘unreasonably excluded’ from the Will. However, when she continued to argue for a larger share, the judge reversed the decision and left her with nothing.
Finance & Legal Sevices In 2011, The Court of Appeal overruled the judge’s decision and said Mrs Ilott was entitled to a share of the money, so three years later, she returned to the High Court to resume her argument for a larger amount. Once again, she was refused. Undeterred, Mrs Ilott returned to the Court of Appeal in 2015 and, since she had no pension and was living on state benefits, she was awarded up to £164,000 to purchase her housing association property and supplement her income from the state. At this point, the charities decided to step in and this month won their Supreme Court challenge, resulting in Mrs Ilott’s sum being reduced to the original £50,000. What is interesting were the factors that the Court took into account - the provision of financial maintenance for an individual other than a spouse or partner and that the level should neither be limited to basic subsistence, nor extended to whatever the claimant wants. The judge also stated a long period of estrangement was something that had to be acknowledged and the Courts needed to consider both the wishes of the Testator, and the impact an award will have upon the claimant’s receipt of benefits. The case has been a prime example for why a Will need to be ‘watertight’. At Eric Robinson Solicitors, we provide the legal expertise and advice needed to predict and protect against the likelihood of an unwanted claim against a deceased person’s estate, and also offer a fixed fee advice hour for anyone in dispute or considering making a claim. Emily Taylor can be contacted on 023 8025 4676 or emily.taylor@ ericrobinson.co.uk

The Ageas Bowl: Hub of Business, Heart of the Community The picture-perfect Ageas Bowl has an extremely exciting summer ahead. Following an action-packed 2016 at the home of Hampshire Cricket, the coming months promise mouth-watering entertainment and unprecedented variety with three high-profile concerts accompanying England’s three Internationals at the venue, not forgetting a vast array of domestic action.
Upon its two year anniversary, Hilton at the Ageas Bowl provides the ultimate overnight stay, completed by its parkland par-69 course, the country’s very first eforea spa and its Sir Ian Botham-inspired restaurant, BEEFY’S, which successfully relaunched as a British tapas bar and brasserie restaurant in March.
Two exciting clashes with South Africa – a Royal London ODI meeting on Saturday 27th May and a NatWest IT20 on Wednesday 21st June – are followed by a potentially series-deciding ODI against the West Indies, ICC World T20 Champions, on Friday 29th September.
In addition to Hampshire’s pursuits in 2017 – boosted by the return of George Bailey and Shahid Afridi as well as South African duo Rilee Rossouw and Kyle Abbott - the Southern Vipers will be back in action at the Ageas Bowl in August, looking to retain their Kia Super League crown having won the inaugural competition last summer.
July sees the official opening of the Ageas Bowl’s 18-hole golf course, Boundary Lakes, and live performances from Rock Legend Bryan Adams and the World’s number one girl band, Little Mix.
With exciting times ahead, the Ageas Bowl – now well-established as an international venue in both sport and music - continues to thrive as a hub of business and at the heart of its community.

Training with Loreal
We are fortunate to have Jan Taylor, Master stylist (long time friend) joins us. Jan has been in the industry for many years and owned her own salons in Cornwall and managed a local salon a few years ago. She brings a wealth of experience and knowledge and is glad to be back in Warsash. After years of working at a local salon and becoming a manager Kelly decided it was time to branch out on her own. Inspired by Olivia’s passion and enthusiasm for hairdressing, Kelly decided it was time to put their ideas in to action and hair Lux was born. Taking over the former estate agents in Warsash mid-February the team have worked hard to transform it into the glamourous salon it is today. The team added “We are thrilled to become part of the Warsash Village & friendly community, all the local residents and business have been really supportive & we are privileged to work alongside them. We are looking forward to working with our neighbours ‘Taylor Hill & Bond’ to create a joint Scarecrow for the Warsash festival!” Hair Lux offers all aspects of hairdressing for ladies, gents and children along with up to date colouring techniques such as freehand, contouring, foilyage & Balayage. They are proud to be working with Loreal professional colours & products & are delighted with the results. The salon also offers Smart bond which is an ingredient added to the colour or applied as a treatment which repairs, strengthens and adds shine to the hair. Clients have 20 | The LOOP

The Trend Edit For Men and Women Just in time for summer, Thomas Marrington brings you the three trends from the SS17 runways that reach across the aisle guy or girl, these styles apply to all.
MILLENNIAL PINK Also known under the guises of rose quartz, tumblr pink, pastel pink, and even (the rather unappealing sounding) pale dogwood, millennial pink was the colour to beat in 2016. Its success can be attributed to many factors. You could say that stateside beauty brand Glossier, borne out of the internet beauty destination Into The Gloss and heralded largely by the Instagram generation, provided a launchpad for the colour when they decided to splash it across their entire product range during their 2014 launch. Or maybe it was Wes Anderson’s film The Grand Budapest Hotel, released
the same year, that propelled millennial pink into the consciousness of young adults the world over. But of what cinched the deal, we can be certain; when Pantone’s annual colour of the year announcement rolled around and Rose Quartz, a dead-ringer for Glossier’s prettyin-pink packaging, was named 2016’s colour. Ever since, this crowd-pleasing pastel hue has become a staple in the zeitgeist, used by fashion houses, beauty behemoths, and even by Kendall Jenner, who painted her wall Baker Miller Pink as an appetite suppressant.
contactus@loopmagazine.net
For men and women, incorporating millennial pink into your summer wardrobe is the most effortless way to stay on trend this summer. For ladies, this beautiful silk blouse from Reiss is an investment piece that will never go out of style. And for the guys, this soft pink Western jacket, sold through Topman by London based menswear brand Antioch, is the perfect balance between John Wayne-esque masculinity and soft summer vibes.

high end, a.k.a. much more expensive. Luckily, subtle is what we want here. For women, this strong shouldered jacket from Next is the perfect compromise. The market is a little trickier for men, but instead, compromise on this Zara shirt complete with redshoulder band. Attention is drawn to the broadness of the shoulder line, without fear of sartorial overkill.
Balenciaga SS17
Still in a place somewhere between an 80s and a 90s revival, power shoulders are most definitely back in trend. The best part about power pads, long seen as embarrassingly Dynastyesque, is that you can actually choose how much of an Alexis Colby you want to be when utilising them. You’d be hard pressed to find anything too extreme on the high street – for that, you’ll have to go

Men can make like Gosha and keep it red with a vibrant sweater, louche in structure, embellished with white graphic writing down the sleeves. A nice twist on the trend, tieside joggers are a practical, comfortable yet still cutting edge way to liven up a staple for women - this pair from Topshop has the perfect tonal colour palette.

Streetwear has become one of the most successful and enduring trends of recent memory, constantly evolving and graduating to the mainstream, with classic streetwear brands such as Supreme now collaborating with the likes of Louis Vuitton. Wayne Stevens interview Ex-World Championship sidecar rider Wayne Stevens has always been mad about motorcycles, but following a devastating crash in Germany in 2008 he was forced to stop competing. However, Wayne has stayed in the sport by supporting his brother and building his team.
Hampshire is booming for motorcycle racing at the moment. There’s currently three or four teams in Hampshire that compete at our level.” Wayne is optimistic about the future of the sport, given the injection of youth that has given motorsports a significant boost in recent years. Wayne said: “Years ago sidecar racing was considered an old man’s sport, but nowadays you have a lot of young kids coming through and they’re the ones who keep the sport going - and it’s the young kids that are fast!” The cost of the sidecars is astounding and, to an outsider of the sport, the building of a sidecar is nearly impossible to comprehend.
We caught up with Wayne to see what it takes to participate in this dangerous sport. When he was riding in the sidecar support races, Wayne got to travel all over the world, even competing in the World Championship support race. Wayne said: “I started Sidecar Racing about 20 years ago, but after my crash in Germany in 2008, I decided to retire. Following that I started my own team up with my brother as the rider. “In the 20 years when I was racing competitively, not once did I think I was going to go out and crash. It never crossed my mind, it was never going to happen. Failure wasn’t an option, and I was so positive every time I went out. But after the crash - it really was the end of competing for me. I broke my arm, and the driver of the motorcycle nearly died; it cast a completely different light over it all.”
Wayne explained: “To build a sidecar costs around £50,000. You have to buy all the parts yourself: the engine, the exhaust, the engine cradle, the air box – everything is made to suit you. The last sidecar we built took around 5 months to build, so it is a real operation putting one together. “The hospitality side is a huge part of racing as well. Our hospitality unit is a gigantic lorry that seats about 50 people. We’ve also got an on-board chef that works on race-days, serving three course dinners to sponsors and members of the team – it really is a great day out!” Wayne’s teams’ next race is in four weeks’ time in Knock Hill, Scotland.
Despite his crash, Wayne was not put off the sport. He decided to support his brother in his ambition of becoming a sidecar rider himself. Wayne said: “My brother still wanted to compete, and just because I crashed, I wasn’t going to let that get in the way of his dreams. I knew that if he didn’t race with me, he would race with someone else. “The bikes possess around 200 brake horsepower, and the sidecar can go up to speeds of 160mph, which is quite scary the first few times! You can’t even describe the excitement of competing in a sidecar. Your only about 45-50 millimetres off the floor, so everything seems a lot faster! It’s one of those sports that, until you’ve had a go yourself, you can never fully appreciate the speed and G-force of the bikes.” Domestically, the Side Car support races remain one of the highest standards of racing in the world – outside the World Championships. Wayne has always been into motorcycles but, interestingly, is not keen on cars. He said: “I’ve always been passionate about anything with an engine, but I’m not interested in cars. I love motorcycle racing. I’ve lived in Havant for most of my life so I’m a local lad, and contactus@loopmagazine.net

Health & Fitness Average Geoff Here we are at the middle of the year already and summertime is here! Whether you’ve been working hard on your health and fitness this year and want to shake it up or if you want to start getting in shape you’ve come to the right place. I’ve got a couple of awesome workouts and a really scrummy and simple recipe for you this month. So once you’ve finished working out, refuel with the recipe overleaf. It can be tough to start on your fitness journey and sometimes even tougher to stay on track unless you have the right motivation. To help you stay motivated i want you to think of a why, a reason or driving force for what goals you want to achieve. It could be weight loss for health, a holiday, a wedding or maybe you want to stay fit and healthy to be able to keep up with your kids. Every time you feel low on motivation and effort i want that why in the front of your mind pushing you to that goal and success. You are the only person responsible for the effort you put in so set those goals and get up, get out and get it done!

Health & Fitness Motivational tips by Mr Funkyfit In order to transform your thought process you need to stop lying to yourself, stop making excuses, stop procrastinating; stop blaming your children or other people for your inactivity and lack of motivation. You only live once so start accepting your flaws and do something about it. Take small steps, get started and the rest will come naturally. Start to train your mind to accept the simple changes in your life, remind yourself that when you eat you need to burn off the food in your body, start to cut down all the unhealthy food and bad habits, empower yourself, look for help where it’s needed, socialise with like minded people, say no to bad habits. Set an example to your peers, your children and family, motivate and inspire them. Below are 10 of my best tips to help you get motivated. If you choose to follow these simple tips then you’re on your way to a healthier and happier you. Good luck! Remember change won’t happen overnight. Start slowly and don’t overdo it. Spend sometime adjusting to your new lifestyle. Go slow try not to rush or go too hard because you might end up burning out and this might end up causing you to hate exercise. Sometimes life events can get in the way and cause you to lose your motivation towards fitness. We all want to look and feel good but if we do nothing then nothing will happen. Imagine waking up in the morning to look at the mirror and hating yourself everyday, Or standing up and holding your belly in your hands only to let go and watch it wobble back down. The only thing that stops you from successfully changing your lifestyle is your mind. Try changing your mindset to understanding healthy living and you’ll be successful. Exercise is part of living healthy. It’s not all just about the six-pack and the washboard abdominals but mainly looking and feeling healthy. By changing to a healthy lifestyle you’ll find yourself much happier and confident. We all want to look and feel good but how many of us actually get up and start doing something about it. Only you can make that decision, ask yourself if you like what you see, do you want to be healthy, do you want to wear your favourite clothes without feeling upset, do you want to be able run with your children so they can experience a great childhood or do you want to live a long healthy life. There are many questions to ask yourself but the answer lies within you. If you hate your lifestyle then do something about it today! 40 | The LOOP

Get inspired by others who have achieved similar goals. Speak to friends or read stories about people who’ve been in the same situation as you and have managed to transform their lives. Such people will motivate you and keep you going.
Find a workout buddy. Workout buddies are great for motivation especially if you meet one that has the same goals as you. They’ll be loads of healthy competition amongst both of you which will help you to push each other. Watch free fitness videos of great achievers and Look at your old photos. Sometimes your old photo’s can motivate you to get back to the body you once had and the videos will keep you motivated. You’ll always think if they can do it then you can too. Buy smaller clothes that you’d like to fit into. Buy that smaller size pair of jeans or a lovely dress you’d like to fit into. This will help you to work towards your goal. Don’t expect fast results. You’ve just started on a lifetime changing journey so don’t expect fast changes and fast results. Just enjoy your new healthy journey and the results will come naturally. Start eating healthy. Get rid of all the unhealthy food in your refrigerator and cupboards. Stock up on fresh healthy fruits, vegetables and meat. This will improve your overall health and make you feel fresher and lighter. Set and plan big events. Family holidays, birthday parties, weddings and charity running, cycling or walking events will help you to set goals and commit to them by preparing yourself. Get yourself some nice workout clothes. Fitness clothes have become trendy these days, so spoil yourself by getting yourself clothes that will help you feel motivated while you’re working out. Join like minded groups or communities. There will be several other people with similar issues and goals. Joining these groups will help you to stay focused and motivated. You can even join online interactive groups. Local Yacht Club supports Hamble Lifeboat
Hamble Lifeboat, which is one of eight independent self-funded Lifeboats around the Solent area, was formed in 1968, as the Southampton Water Inshore Rescue Service by local residents in response to the increasing number of casualties occurring in Southampton Water and local rivers. It has attended, on average, 100 incidents per year, day and night, 365 days a year, in all weather conditions. Hamble Lifeboat, which costs over £35,000 a year to run operates in an area 15 miles long and 10 miles across. It is bounded by Lee on Solent and Cowes to the east and by Gurnard Bank and the mouth of the River Beaulieu to the west. It includes the central Solent, Southampton Water and the rivers Itchen, Hamble and Test

Two lifeboats run in six month shifts, one afloat in service and one in the station for refit. The crew is made up of volunteers who give their time and effort with the very vital support of their families. Universal Marina Yacht Club, which is affiliated to the RYA, is the newest Club on the Hamble River and was formed in 2014 to provide all boat owners at Universal Marina with cruising, social and training activities. A major Club event in the winter calendar is the charity dinner which has raised over £1000 and in previous years has supported ‘Help for Heroes’ and ORCA charities. ORCA is a Portsmouth based charity which is dedicated to the protection of cetaceans, through research, partnership and education. Last month over 60 Club members and guests attended a dinner at Bistro 8 in Universal Marina where the magnificent sum of £535 was raised on the night for the Hamble Lifeboat. James Godwin, the Lifeboat Station Manager, gave a light- hearted talk and received the donation from Terry Deadman, the Club Commodore. 42 | The LOOP

Car Fest comes to Berrywood!
Year R pupils at Berrywood Primary School in Hedge End celebrated their vehicle project work in style during Car Fest 2017! Families were invited to come and view the amazing vehicles on show as well as sharing the children’s learning. Vehicles on show ranged from super cars such as Ferraris, Porsches and the new car designed by the local ‘Elemental’ team, to classic cars including a Ford Model T and an Austin Seven. There was even a tractor and a mini digger for the children to enjoy. Sirens from the emergency vehicles sounded and car horns beeped as the celebration got under way!
Families were also set the challenge of creating a go kart to show at the event and many of the children ‘blinged’ their scooters and bikes for the show too. Children were so proud to complete a lap of the arena, in fact it was difficult to encourage them to put down their pride and joy in order to collect their well deserved certificates. “What a wonderful afternoon we’ve had, celebrating the work of our pupils! They were set the challenge of designing a vehicle for our PE coach. After interviewing him and asking what his requirements were, the children put pencil to paper and designed a suitable vehicle. They went on to make a model from their design, learning about wheels and axles in the process. “We are thankful to the local community for supporting our work and giving up their time to bring their vehicles to school for this spectacular event”, said a member of the Year R team.

Birds of Hamble Common Hamble Common is 55 acres of coastal heath owned and managed by Eastleigh Borough Council and assigned Special Scientific Interest because of its wide range of habitats. It is the main focus for the Hamble Conservation Volunteers and for those who have not heard of the Common before, it is a downward pointing triangular shaped area bounded by Southampton Water and the River Hamble. This is second of a series of articles in which we describe the resident and visiting birds that depend on the unusual habitat provided by the Common.
Birdlife in the Summer The arrival of early summer ups the volume of birdsong from the landfall cries of the later migrants. There is a sense of urgency as they have to attract a mate quickly and begin nest building to ensure that they complete their breeding cycle before moving on. The sound of Chiffchaffs, the clue is in the name as far as their song goes, Blackcaps, Whitethroats and occasional Willow warbler can also be heard across the Common. Reed warblers can be heard in the reed bed at the head of the creek and the loud and explosive sound of the Cetti’s warbler is often heard in the trees surrounding the adjacent car park. A pair of Mute swans regularly takes up residence close to the marina car park and they seem comfortable with the comings and goings of yacht crews. They build a substantial and conspicuous nest in the form of a large heap of reeds and rushes. The parents, known as the cob and pen, are very protective of their nest and eggs and should be left well alone. feeding amongst the scrub and tree tops. These little birds are one of the few bird species that appear to be on the increase in the UK. In the warm summer sunshine, you may catch sight of the odd lizard basking in the sunshine if you are very lucky – usually you just hear a slight rustling as they scuttle off into the purple moor grass. These are Common lizards and tend to be a rich brown colour with golden brown stripes or spots on their backs and can be up to 15 cm long. For the rest of the summer the young lizards need to fatten themselves up to survive their winter hibernation by feeding on small worms, slugs and insects.
It is not widely recognised that swan nests and eggs are protected from disturbance by law and technically all swans still belong to the Queen! When the cygnets hatch after about 5 weeks of incubation, they stay around the nest for a couple of days before their parents shepherd them off into the Hamble River. The Common has a sizeable population of Long Tailed Tits that are resident all year round and these little birds make super little capsule shaped nests from moss, cobwebs, lichens and are lined with feathers. They start nest building early in the spring so by summer there are small family flocks of these charming little birds 46 | The LOOP
contactus@loopmagazine.net
The areas of Bell heather flowers give a welcome splash of colour amongst the grassland and provide a food source for insects. By the end of summer hopefully the small group of cattle grazing the Common have done their work and kept the brambles and other scrub at bay for another year. During late summer the birdlife tends to more subdued as the adult birds use this quiet time after breeding to moult into a new coat of feathers and during this time they tend to be less active. The foreshore is also very quiet at this time of year until the Oystercatchers, Curlews, Redshanks and Brent geese return from their breeding grounds. But at high tide if you look offshore you might be rewarded with the sight of Terns fishing in the calm water between the spit and the oil terminal jetty.
Hamble Conservation Volunteers We are the Hamble Conservation Volunteers, a group of local enthusiasts committed to preserving the habitat and amenity of Hamble Common for the benefit of the community and wildlife. We assist Eastleigh Borough Council by providing support for a variety of activities.
The scrub clearance that takes place on the Common each winter is essential for the retention of its keystone heathland habitat particularly the small but significant areas of bell heather. We also provide a large number of bird boxes that protect our birds during the nesting season from predators such as grey squirrels, magpies and woodpeckers. More mundane but no less essential for the safety of wildlife, dogs and children are our twice monthly beach cleans, it is disappointing that these are necessary but the quantity of rubbish left during a year fills over 300 black refuse bags.
Can you help? Most of our tasks are manually intensive and there is no substitute for numbers but there are roles for almost all agility levels. Whether you are an individual or a company looking for a rewarding project for your Corporate Responsibility programme, we are keen to hear from you. 2017 London Marathon
Ladies’ Night 2017!
Running this year’s iconic London Marathon for Children with Cancer UK Charity has to be one of the most amazing, humbling and painful things I have ever done, and I’ve given birth 3 times! Knowing I was running for such a worthy cause, making a difference to children affected by cancer made it all worthwhile, and I was very honoured to be asked to run for the charity. To help raise as much money as possible, I held a Ladies’ Night in October 2016. The night was an amazing success, with a sell-out venue of 160 women, and raising over £3,200 all for Children with Cancer UK! So many ladies have since asked me to hold another event as it was so much fun, so here I am again!
The Ladies’ Night this year is being held in Titchfield Community Centre on Saturday 30th September at 7.15pm. The night will start with options of: hair and body pampering from ‘Serenity Hair, Warsash’ to celebrate their new spa opening in May 2017; some yummy treats from ‘Rachel’s Cupcakes’ and ‘House of Candy’; a tarot card reading by Sonya James; an adult face paint from ‘Glitter Fairies’; a little magic from El-Roberto - Comedy Magician, and photo fun in the ‘Funky Photobooth’, as well as enjoying some beverages from the bar while you wait for the entertainment to begin!
The main show will be introduced by comedy Queen Cherry Liquor, who will keep you laughing throughout the night, and will introduce two male strippers for your viewing pleasure! Anytime Fitness will be supplying the goody bags, which I will pack with discount vouchers and extra treats. I have already sold enough tickets to cover all costs for the night, so EVERY PENNY will go directly to the charity Children with Cancer UK! The tickets to this fabulous evening of fun are advance purchase only at just £15 each. You can e-mail me at: hayleymilam@hotmail.co.uk, text/call me on 07812 213011 or you can find my Facebook event page “Charity Ladies’ Night (part 2!)” Book your tickets ASAP to avoid disappointment, as several people missed out last year due to it being sold out early. 18’s and over only please! I look forward to seeing you on the night!

KT Tunstall to headline 2017 Wickham Festival Top singer-songwriter KT Tunstall is to headline the 10th Wickham Festival being staged near Wickham in Hampshire between Thursday 3rd and Sunday 6th August 2017. The award-winning Scottish musician is famed for hit songs like ‘Black Horse and the Cherry Tree’ and ‘Suddenly I See’. She’s been nominated for a Grammy Award, is a BRIT Award winner, and has also been nominated for the Mercury Music Award. People travel from all over the UK and abroad to attend. This year’s early ticket sales are running at a record level and we are confident that our 10th birthday festival at Wickham will be our best yet.” Full details of the Festival line-up can be found on the Festival website at www.wickhamfestival.co.uk and both day and weekend tickets can be purchased online or via the Festival Box Office, tel. 01329 231942.

Business Communications Fast Internet Access As the Internet becomes more prevalent in everyday life it is essential to have a good internet connection. This is becoming one of the major dependencies on choosing a new location both for business and for residential location. For both business and residential locations there are choices though. You do not have to depend on the standard asymmetric digital subscriber line or more commonly abbreviated to ADSL, there are other, faster options although some will depend on your location. ADSL or asymmetric digital subscriber line tends to be the entry level in-direct Internet connection. In-direct meaning that you will share the connection with other local connectivity. If everyone around your location decides to go online at the same time, your connection will slow down. If someone is using a lot of the available bandwidth for your area, your connection will slow down. ADSL speeds range from as little as .5 Mbps up to around 7Mbps but can be as much as 20Mbps Mbps stands for megabits per second and is just a measure of how fast data can be transferred. The higher the Mbps the better faster the connection. Fibre to the Cabinet or FTTC refers to an ADSL or asymmetric digital subscriber line that is delivered to a local connection box that is fed by fibre optic cable and then uses your standard copper cable phone line for the last section. You need to be in a FTTC area to receive this, not all premises can get FTTC.
Fibre optic cable can deliver data very fast and it’s only the last length of copper that then slows it down hence you can achieve speeds of up to 80Mbps but realistically its around 50Mbps. This connection type goes by a lot of different names, Infinity, VDSL, but essentially it is the same thing. Fibre to the Premises or FTTP refers to a direct connection of fibre optic cable from your location, direct into the local Exchange and then to an Internet Service Provider or ISP. Again, this is location specific and is still in it’s infancy in the UK. If you can get FTTP you should be looking at speeds of 330Mbps with options of up to 1Gbps. 1 Gigabit equals 1000Mbps! If you require a fast, secure, Internet connection you can have a leased line. This is where a fibre cable will be installed from the exchange direct to your location…within reason and permissions. The leased line provider will lay a path to deliver a fibre optic cable direct to your building from their local Exchange and connect you directly to the Internet Service Provider or ISP. With this you can choose what speeds you want from 10Mbps up to 1Gbps and above. As with most things technical, this is a brief overview of Internet connectivity. There are many more options that fit in with the above such as satellite and multi copper cable fed connections Working Technologies can supply all aspects of Internet connectivity and advise on best options at your location. We can supply and program routers and provide that all important antivirus security and protection. If you require any information, please call 01489 555925 or email info@workingtech.co.uk

Philip Lyons Philip’s main subject is the Cornish landscape. Not just its rugged coast but its quiet, sleepy creeks and its lush green valleys and the buildings in the landscape. What is important to Philip is finding a balance between abstract ideas and depicting the real place. He exhibits widely..

Mike Moss Born in Preston, Lancashire in 1948. Emigrated to Australia in his twenties and later travelled to New Zealand where he held his first exhibition. Returned to the UK to attend both Preston and Plymouth Colleges of Art before eventually settling in Cornwall. In 1984 Michael won the Western Morning News Open Art Competition and in 1991 he was a prize-winner in the EccoGoodhousekeeping Open Exhibition. Exhibiting three South West Opens and in 1996 he won prizes in the Mixed Media and Drawing categories of the Society of Artists for Cornwall. In 1997 he was a prize-winner in the Sterts Open Competition and in 1998 he won two prizes in the Watercolour and Drawing sections in the Society of Artists in Cornwall. In 2006 he won the Watercolour prize at Stuart House. ..s.
The work is highly influenced by the landscapes of North Cornwall and she uses this as an inspiration for her abstract forms. She exhibits her work in her gallery and in many others in the southwest as well as further afield. She studied at Falmouth School of Art and Brunel University and is an exhibiting member of the CCA. She is happy to undertake commissions.
Francis Spice Originally from Somerset I moved to Cornwall in 1998. I had worked with clay for a number of years making hand modelled figures and animals. I then studied ceramics and design at Cornwall College and in 2008 I completed my Higher National Diploma. My work now is mainly hand built slab work. From a flat piece of clay I cut out my desired shape before assembling the piece together. I use under glazes, glazes, stains, oxides and gold lustre to decorate my work. Each piece is fired 2-3 times. My inspiration comes from everything and anything.
Richard Gibson The boxes I make are based on the pattern developed by the Shaker communities in America during the 19th century. Inspired by their simplicity and work ethic, all the boxes are made by hand and use hardwoods sourced locally and sustainably including from some of the well-known estates such as Stock Gaylard, Westobirt and Heligan. In addition to the traditional stacking box design where on size fits inside the next for ease of storage, I also produce contemporary pieces based on the same principles such as range of trays and egg carriers.”
John Griffiths Interested in the essence of landscape and its timeless and spiritual quality. Favourite artists include Turner, Cezanne and Paul Henry. His work is highly textured and although previously working in watercolours he now concentrates mainly on mixed media and oils using materials from the location. Inspired by the rugged landscapes of North Cornwall, Ireland and the dramatic and colourful landscapes of the Languedoc in southern France. His work has been purchased by the National Trust and he exhibits widely. Commissions undertaken. 68 | The LOOP

Saul Cathcart Saul Cathcart is a contemporary, landscape artist living in and working in Cornwall. He paints exclusively in situ, so he can respond to his surroundings directly. As a result, his paintings have great observational skill and a unique energy. ‘Working out in the landscape is where it all happens. The painting can be pushed in many different directions and allows for spontaneity in the marks I make. My paintings are about relaying my emotions on to canvas as well as capturing a place.’ Saul studied Fine Art Sculpture at Winchester School of Art and gained a fine art degree in 2001. Since then he quickly returned to his first love of painting and started re-exploring the Cornish landscape he grew up with. He has regular shows in Cornwall and Devon.
Peter Levy Peter Levy was born in Hampshire in the 1950’s and has lived there, near the Solent and the River Hamble for much of his life. It is this coastline that inspires his ceramics and glass pieces. Peter studied 3D design at The University of Portsmouth before completing an MA in Fine Art and he has been working as a professional artist ever since. He is a successful and popular local artist, whose work is exhibited in many prestigious galleries across the country.

In this edition The Cassini probe has begun a series of dives in between the rings of Saturn and the planet’s atmosphere
SPACE AGENCY The Cassini probe has begun a series of dives in between the rings of Saturn and the planet’s atmosphere The dives are the beginning of a dramatic end to the mission. After more than a decade of ground-breaking discoveries, and with little fuel left, it has been decided to end the mission by plunging it into Saturn’s atmosphere on 15 September 2017.

The UK has involvement on 4 instruments onboard the Cassini spacecraft, including as the Principal Investigator for the magnetometer, built to measure planetary and inter-planetary magnetic fields and developed by a team at Imperial College, London. Like a highly-sensitive and extremely precise compass, Cassini’s Magnetometer records the direction and strength of magnetic fields around the spacecraft. This helps scientists learn about the interiors of Saturn and its moons, along with the planet’s magnetosphere - the giant region of space around the planet influenced by its magnetic field. The instrument has a long history and was built by Professor David Southwood and his team at Imperial College. It was selected for the NASA spacecraft in 1991 and work began immediately. David moved to ESA the same month Cassini launched in 1997 and management of the instrument was passed to his successor, Professor Michele Dougherty.
Professor Dougherty, Professor of Space Physics at Imperial College, said: Today’s first close in dive by the Cassini spacecraft in between the rings and atmosphere of Saturn signals the start of its final mission phase, the Grand Finale, where the focus will be on understanding the interior of Saturn, its rings and atmosphere and last but not least how long a day is on Saturn. With the repeated dives in the as yet unvisited region, Cassini will conclude its journey by collecting unprecedented data to address fundamental questions about the origin of Saturn and its ring system. The Cassini-Huygens spacecraft embarked on a seven-year voyage across the Solar System, eventually reaching Saturn in July 2004. Several months later, the Cassini orbiter released ESA’s Huygens probe, which landed on Titan on 14th January 2005 – the first landing in the outer Solar System.

Enshrouded by a thick nitrogen-dominated atmosphere and partly covered by lakes and rivers, Titan has a weather and hydrological cycle that bears some interesting similarities to Earth. However, there are important differences: the key component there is not water, like on our planet, but methane, and the temperature is very low, around –180°C at the surface.

Another of Cassini’s breakthroughs was the detection of a towering plume of water vapour and organic material spraying into space from warm fractures near the south pole of Saturn’s icy moon, Enceladus. These salt-rich jets indicate that an underground sea of liquid water is lurking only a few kilometres below the moon’s icy surface, which was confirmed by gravity and rotation measurements. A recent analysis of data collected during flybys of Enceladus with the Cassini Ion Neutral Mass Spectrometer also revealed hydrogen

Summer Activities Monkey World moves infant orang-utan to Europes only orang-utan crèche with VIP status throughout the journey two year olds, Bulu-Mata and Rieke from Budapest and Berlin Zoos. The playful pair have joined Roro and baby Loren and the primate care staff have been pleased to see lively games between the youngsters already. Also part of Monkey World’s orang-utan nursery family are adolescent boys Silvestre and Jin and adult female Oshine. The adult ladies have a job keeping a watchful eye over this growing adopted family.
Monkey Word has welcomed a new orang-utan this week, 21-month-old Bornean orang-utan Loren, and given her a new adopted family. Born in Moscow Zoo, Loren was sadly rejected at birth by her mother and was hand-reared during the first months of her life by the Moscow keepers, while her move to Monkey World was arranged. Monkey World, home of the European Crèche for Orphaned Orang-utans, has a dedicated orangutan nursery specially designed to develop strength, social skills and climbing confidence. Here infants can grow-up with their own kind, supervised by expert care staff. Straight away the team at Monkey World began introducing baby Loren to her new family and she was instantly accepted by her new adopted mum Roro! Already resident are Sumatran

Dr Alison Cronin, Monkey World Director, and Head of Monkey World’s orang-utans, Jarno Swandi, travelled to Moscow, courtesy of IAG Cargo and British Airways, to meet baby Loren and travel back with her to the UK. Special arrangements were made and approvals given to allow baby Loren to travel in the passenger cabin so that this endangered baby travelled to her new home in comfort and safety throughout the flight. Dr Cronin said, “It took many months to arrange but government agencies from Moscow to London have worked tirelessly and given special permission for baby Loren to travel on board a passenger plane with British Airways and IAG Cargo. As a vulnerable infant, everything was done to ensure Loren’s journey was stress free on her way to get an adopted family that she needs and deserves. Everyone at Monkey World is pleased to welcome Loren, especially her new adopted family of six other orang-utans.” Since arriving at the park, Loren was introduced to her new family, starting with adult female RoRo. RoRo’s gentle nature has allowed Loren to settle very quickly, and the pair have progressed to nesting down together in a hammock at night. With a fantastic adoptive mum, and fab new play mates in Bulu-Mata and Rieke, Loren’s future looks bright at Monkey World. To follow the lives of the primates at Monkey World, watch the series of “Monkey Life” on Freeview Sky Pick. For full listings please see www.monkeyworld.org/monkey-life.
Summer Activities The Hovercraft Museum by Mike Pinder
Cockerell filming his model in the Norfolk Broads.
Every schoolboy knows that the hovercraft was invented by Sir Christopher Cockerell and that this novel form of amphibious transport was developed in Britain in the middle of the twentieth century. The truth is that the first patents for an aircushion vehicle were granted to Sir John Thorneycroft at the end of the nineteenth century. Thorneycroft’s working model is now in The Hovercraft Museum. Cockerell patented a peripheral air-jet system containing a low pressure cushion of air, enabling a vehicle to travel over land or water at high speed. His experiment with a blower and two tins and his first model hovercraft are also in the museum. However, his system was never used in production. The development of flexible skirts was the breakthrough that allowed hovercraft to negotiate larger waves and obstacles as well as reducing power and increasing stability. The first hovercraft, SRN1, crossed the Channel in 1959 to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of Bleriot’s first flight over it. Within a decade there were six SRN4 hovercraft ferrying millions of passengers and vehicles over it. They ran profitably for over three decades until they were undertaken by the Channel Tunnel. Nevertheless, many smaller hovercraft have found successful applications around the globe. The Hovercraft Museum Trust was formed 30 years ago and now has a collection of 70 hovercraft as well as films, photographs, drawings and documents, covering their history and the many spinoff inventions including: hover-trains, hover-pallets, hover-mowers and hover-Hoovers. The author invented an aircushion system for moving large objects such as oil storage tanks. This has been used many times and is the most successful industrial application of the principle. He then developed a range of small inflatable hovercraft that he sold to 70 countries, for a wide variety of military, security, survey, rescue, pest control, exploration and pleasure applications. Pindair, his own company, was based in Gosport and employed about 25 local people but was unable to keep up royalty payments to the government and so went into voluntary liquidation. He was a founder member of The Hovercraft Club, which organises many races and rallies, and was a founder member of The Hovercraft Society, which formed the trust.
The Hovercraft Museum at the former HMS Daedalus
The collection is situated on the site of the former Royal Navy Hovercraft Unit at HMS Daedalus. It is housed in two former seaplane hangars, which were listed and have recently been re-clad. A band of volunteers is preserving and restoring the exhibits, on a shoestring budget, however, the future of the museum is now uncertain as developers would like to build some more flats there. The Science Museum, National Maritime Museum, Hampshire and Gosport have all pledged their support but the museum desperately needs to secure its tenure before it can become established. The Heritage Lottery Fund has indicated that it will make a substantial grant when this occurs. Lord Mountbatten realised the importance of amphibious hovercraft for military operations and Prince Phillip has given his support to British manufacturers and operators such as Hovertravel. The trustees hope that Princess Anne will help to save her SRN4 Mountbatten Class namesake, which is at the centre of the site and now houses a number of smaller hovercraft. The museum is open on Saturdays from 10.00am to 4.00pm during the summer. contactus@loopmagazine.net

AT Explosion museum of naval firepower, Gosport
Saturday 5 & Sunday 6 August 2017 Time: 10AM - 5PM This tale of love and values unfolds in the class-conscious England of the late 18th century. The five Bennet sisters - including strong-willed Elizabeth and young Lydia - have been raised by their mother with one purpose in life: finding a husband. When a wealthy bachelor takes up residence in a nearby mansion, the Bennets are abuzz. Amongst the man's sophisticated circle of friends, surely there will be no shortage of suitors for the Bennet sisters. But when Elizabeth meets up with the handsome and - it would seem snobbish Mr. Darcy, the battle of the sexes is joined.

Townswomen’s Guilds People have always heard of the WI but for many, Townswomen’s Guilds are not something that they are familiar with. In 1929 the first Townswomen’s Guild was formed in Haywards Heath - by the end of the year, 26 Guilds had been formed. In 1930 the organisation changed its name to the National Union of Townswomen’s Guild (NUTG) and adopted the NUWSS (National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies) colours - red for courage, white for faith, green for hope. The National Magazine became known as the “Townswomen” We meet regularly, regardless of politics, race, age, religion or circumstances. We exchange ideas and views, develop new skills, campaign on various issues - but most of all we enjoy ourselves, make new friends and support each other. You are never alone with nothing to do once you have joined the Townswomen’s Guild. In addition to the regular meetings, you can become involved in our national events with conferences on a wide range of subjects, art and craft workshops and a variety of sport and leisure activities that are held around the country. Our quarterly magazine “Townswoman” gives additional information on past and future events that are being arranged.
