A Chat about Conifers Is it right that we can draw a parallel between marmite and conifers? Do you either of love them or hate them? Est. 45 years Why do they still have an undeserved reputation of being dull and not deserving of our interest? Many put it down to the bad press about leylandii and the fact that we over used conifers in their heyday during the seventies. A typical sight in our gardens then was the obligatory island bed of dwarf conifers!
Titchfield
So it seems we fell out of love with conifers and seemingly cannot bring ourselves to introduce them back into our gardens. It’s time to refresh our thinking. It’s time we gave the greatly misunderstood conifer a renaissance! The gardening world has moved on since the seventies and with the current trend in everything ‘retro’, surely conifers qualify? According to the Chelsea Flower Show they obviously do, as conifers were a recurring theme this year, appearing in several of the show gardens. Conifers are versatile and have valuable qualities that many other plants do not possess. In fact they really do have so many qualities, its very difficult to know where to begin. They come in a variety of attractive contrasting shapes and sizes with colourful foliage that ranges from soft golden yellow, steel blue to bronze to several shades of green. Most conifers are evergreen and provide colour, texture and structure all year round and are most noticeable in the winter garden They can be slow growing, fast growing, narrow, pyramid, tall, broad, conical, upright, weeping or spreading. Varieties include juniper, cedar, Italian Cypress, pine, thuja, spruce and larch and there are four basic growth habits. These are miniature, dwarf, medium and large. Now do you see how versatile they really are?
Conifers Create Contrast
Then we have conifers that behave as if they were chameleons! Take the Thuja occidentalis globular with its foliage that changes from bright emerald green in the spring to dark green in the summer, a bronze tinge in the autumn back to a bright green for winter! What about the varieties of Picea or Chamaecyparis with their elegant slender shapes and pretty blue foliage? You can use conifers as a backbone to your garden, either as stand alone specimen trees, or to grow as hedges, have as features in mixed borders and to provide ground cover for low maintenance gardens. Once established they require very little care, apart from some annual trimming to keep in shape. Go on join the renaissance and give a conifers a new lease of life - they deserve nothing less! www.hambrooks.co.uk

Marine Matters Now the sun is out and here to stay we decided to speak to a local company that gets busy in the summer and see how business was going on the water. We managed to talk to Henry Hillier the owner of Marine Matters to find out what the company is all about. LOOP: Hi Henry, give me your elevator pitch for Marine Matters. Henry: I started the company in 2001 from home and a selfbuild website (don’t ask!) Since then we have become one of the longest established RYA Training Centres on The Solent, six years ago we became the Managing Operators of Stone Pier Marina in Warsash, three years ago we were appointed the Solent Dealer for BRIG RIBs and most recently we have been awarded the only Authorised Suzuki service dealer for the River Hamble. All the different parts of the business dovetail together to create an excellent level of customer service all under one roof. LOOP: It sounds like a lot has happened in the last few years what do you put that down too? Henry: I think there is a lot to be said for longevity; we got to the ten year mark when the country was mired in recession but we had trade customers hunting us out with a few big new contracts, this was good for our confidence, we took our chances and it just took off. As a team we are very enthusiastic about what we do and have built a reputation as the easygoing professionals. These days we have a team of seven, which is growing again this year with new apprentices starting in September. LOOP: What is the strongest part of the business for you today? Henry: It varies; such is the nature of the marine industry. The Marina is a staple as all berths are on annual contracts; The RYA Training Centre is year round with the trade work in winter and leisure boating in summer. However, the Suzuki service workshop is getting busier all the time with new and repeat business. But the boat sales are up 150% on last year and show no signs of slowing down. LOOP: What does the future hold? Henry: Marine Matters has gone through a big expansion over the last few years and that has been demanding on the team so the plan now is to consolidate what we have and improve on our business process over the next few years. Essentially we are going to improve efficiency while building the boat sales and outboard servicing part of the business. Although that sounds simple there is a new stock control system to implement, staff to train, and ever growing workloads to manage all without letting our customer service suffer; ultimately that is the most important thing to me. We did ask Henry where he thought the business would be in 10 years but he just smiled and said “Who knows, the skies the limit…” and then left to sea trial a new BRIG RIB with a potential customer. contactus@loopmagazine.net

Win a place in history by naming P&O Cruises newest ship In 2020, P&O Cruises will enter the history books once again as it brings together over 180 years of history and experience to create the next generation of cruise ship. At 180,000 tons, this will be Britain’s biggest cruise ship and it therefore deserves a name that is worthy of its size and credentials. P&O Cruises is inviting its guests and the general public to be part of this historic occasion and suggest a suitable name for this magnificent ship. The competition to name the ship will run on the P&O Cruises website and through social media channels from Monday July 10, 2017 and a panel of experts will consider all entries with the winning name being announced next year. To help inspire entrants, P&O Cruises has produced four short videos featuring Food Heroes Eric Lanlard and Olly Smith, producer and performer Jonathan Wilkes and Azura godmother and Strictly Come Dancing judge Darcey Bussell CBE which can be viewed online. Not only will the winner earn their place in history with their chosen name being proudly emblazoned on the ship for everyone to see for years to come, but they will also be given two VIP places at the ship’s naming ceremony in spring 2020 - a prize that money cannot buy.
P&O Cruises senior vice president Paul Ludlow said: “This new ship will be the first new launch for P&O Cruises in five years and will play a pivotal role in redefining the brand and broadening our appeal. It is therefore incredibly important that we have a name that reflects the ship’s heritage as well as highlighting the array of new cruising experiences it will offer – something memorable and dignified that reflects its position as the new star in our fleet. I encourage the general public to get their thinking caps on but also to remember that naming a ship is akin to naming a child. The name is an inherent part of its personality and is something that will sail with it for life!” The new ship will accommodate approximately 5,200 guests (lower berths). It will have a striking new exterior and interior design and will comprehensively embrace the company’s classic and iconic features. It will also be the most environmentally efficient ship in P&O Cruises history. The ship’s “green cruising” design will use LNG to generate the primary source of power both in port and on the open sea, significantly reducing exhaust emissions to help protect the environment in support of the company’s sustainability goals. Ludlow continued: “The ship will bring an array of new cruising experiences to guests and attract newcomers to the brand, whilst instantly resonating with forward-thinking P&O Cruises guests, encapsulating the ‘P&O-ness’ they recognise and love. Choice, flexibility and the ability to create individual holiday experiences on board will be at its heart.” For more information on the competition and the new ship go to www.pocruises.com/new-ship To book call P&O Cruises on 0843 374 0111, visit www.pocruises.co.uk or visit a local travel agent.

Junior Field Gunners Compete In Unique Challenge Hot on the heels of the Seniors Challenge which took place on Saturday 3rd June, HMS Collingwood hosted the annual Junior Leaders Field Gun Competition on Friday 7th July. This competition is very similar to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity Field Gun, but is predominantly for youths aged 16-24, who have either only recently joined the Armed Forces or are studying at college. This year in addition to the Armed Forces crews, teams competed from Fareham College, Chichester College, Sea Cadet units and University Technical Colleges (UTC) across the country. Building on The Team Works and emphasising the training theme, the teams came into the competition with little or no prior experience of Field Gun and only had one week to train, with the finals taking place on Friday in front of friends and family and personnel across the base. With 18 crews taking part this year the audience were privileged to witness 3 finals; Plate 2 was won by Fareham College, Plate 1 saw the HMS Sultan team first over the finishing line and in a closely fought main final the home team Victory Squadron took the honours.
The HMS Collingwood Victory Squadron crew in action
Student president and member of the Fareham College crew, Sam Riches said “We were all sort of nervous and we tried to keep our cool and stay on track. We got our heads down for the final and came away with a trophy.” The VIP at the event was Second Sea Lord Vice Admiral Jonathan Woodcock OBE. Addressing the teams on completion of the event he said “You have taken part in something pretty extraordinary this week. You have overcome the challenge of moving something the size of a small car. Remember what you have achieved because it is extraordinary.” The Junior Leaders Challenge is the only competition open specifically for new recruits and youths, offering them a chance to work as a team and challenge themselves in a unique setting. It is hoped that the enthusiasm and professionalism on display by the teams will encourage them to take part in the main Royal Navy Field Gun Competition in future years.

Computer Know How!
by what you remember, rather than for a filename. You can even share albums and photos with other Google users.
– No longer “Just a Search-Engine” In this edition of Computer Know How, we are going to be taking a look at probably the most recognised entity in the entire Internet, Google. As the title of this editorial suggests, Google has surpassed the days of being “just a search-engine” and has in fact evolved into a technological swiss army knife. With tools ranging from emails through to documents and videos, Google has literally got an app for everything. We will be taking a look at a few of the more commonly used Google applications, Gmail, Google Docs and Google Photos.
If you already have a Google account, you’ll have access to Gmail. Gmail is really useful, and free, which makes it better. It doesn’t just give you emails either, it also gives you a huge 15GB worth of online cloud storage. Gmail is also really customisable, letting you change the look and feel to how you want it.
One Last Thing… Google have recently come up with the G Suite Learning Centre, which has online tips and guides for using all of their applications. It is really well presented and super easy to use! So, if there are any particular apps you want to try, check it out at www.gsuite.google.com/learning-center/ Don’t forget that you can always contact us for free impartial advice. Just give us a call at Hypersonic for hardware and software support, tuition, web design, data retrieval, commercial and home networking, all with an efficient and friendly service. Call Wayne or Gareth at Hypersonic IT 01489 582666. Email: wayne@hypersonic.co.uk
With Gmail, all of your emails are stored safely in the cloud, where you can access them from any computer, or device with a web browser. You can also quickly organise and find important emails and add your own professional signatures to emails you send.
If you use Gmail on your phone, or tablet, you may want to take a look at the Inbox app, which adds even more features such as a Snooze button and scheduled sending.
Google Docs Unlike Microsoft Office, Google Docs is free, and does not take up space on your hard drive. It is an online office suite that includes Docs (documents), Sheets (spreadsheets), Slides (presentations), Forms (surveys) and Drawings (graphs). All of these tools work seamlessly with Google Drive (Google’s Cloud storage). Google Docs brings your documents to life with smart editing and styling tools to help you easily format text and paragraphs, there is also a wide variety of templates that you can choose from to get you started. One of the best features of Google Docs is that you can share it with anyone with a Google account, so that they can review and edit the work you have done. You can also see what they are editing, and can both be editing at the same time! If you look at the top right-hand corner, the person’s Google account is shown, with anything they do indicated by the corresponding colour.
Google Photos Finally, Google Photos. Google Photos realises that devices can get clogged with photos and videos, the solution – automatic and unlimited backup. You can view a lifetime of photos across all of your devices, with basic editing available as well. Image cropping and filters are available in browser as well as the app itself, which is available on most devices. Your photos can be organised by people, places and things, meaning you can search for photos 14 | The LOOP

500th voyage for SS Shieldhall as Charity celebrates The Solent Steam Packet Limited, the charity operating Southampton’s heritage steamship SS Shieldhall, are celebrating as the vessel recently embarked upon her 500th voyage since charitable status began in 1988. Originally constructed in 1955 as a vessel to carry treated sludge down the River Clyde to the dumping grounds for the Glasgow Corporation, Shieldhall was sold to Southern Water in 1977 to perform a similar role out of Southampton. Her role was discontinued due to rising costs and Shieldhall was due to be sold for scrap. However, a group of enterprising individuals saw her heritage value, forming the charity and purchasing her for her scrap price of £20k. Amongst the 500 sailings since have been trips to Dordrecht in Holland and to her home port of Glasgow for Shieldhall’s 50th birthday celebrations in 2005. Although currently limited to sailing in Solent waters (with passengers) it is hoped to extend the list of cruise destinations in future years.

Warm weather also meant the bar and saloon were busy with a steady stream of visitors for Shieldhall’s renowned real ale, bacon butties and ice cream! Shieldhall Chief Engineer Graham Mackenzie was delighted at reaching the 500th voyage milestone. “It is a credit to our loyal band of volunteers that Shieldhall is 500 voyages strong, with the promise of many more to come. We are all united in our love of steam and keeping the tradition of steamships in Southampton going strong. The first steam packet companies operated out of Southampton in the 1820s and nearly 200 years later passengers can still get to appreciate this wonderful mode of travel. Shieldhall is a living time capsule, the skills of our volunteers fast belonging to a forgotten age. However, thanks to a recent HLF grant we have been able to secure her future for many years to come, and are reaching out to new audiences who have never set foot on board a steamship. The smell of the steam, the distinctive sound of the Shieldhall whistle, the opportunity to feel the heat of the Boiler Room - these are experiences that are never forgotten by our passengers.” Today Shieldhall is the largest operational, passenger-cargo steam ship in Britain. A member of the National Historic Fleet she serves as a sea going tribute to Britain’s maritime heritage. Shieldhall is based in and sails from Southampton Docks (except for a few days in September in Poole where she is moored for the Bournemouth Air Festival). Full details of the 2017 cruise programme and berthing information can be found at www.ss-shieldhall.co.uk Tickets for cruises can be purchased online at www.ss-shieldhall.co.uk or by calling the Ticket Manager on 0844 357 2329 (calls cost 7p per minute from landline, calls from mobiles may vary). 16 | The LOOP

Gosport Shedders Save HMS Collingwood’s Cross
A Night of Dirty Dancing – The Ultimate Tribute Show
HMS Collingwood recently hosted members of the Gosport Men’s Shed to bacon butties in the Chaplaincy as a thank-you for refurbishing the cross that stands outside.
Thursday 14th September at 7.30pm Portsmouth Guildhall
Taking pride of place outside the Establishment’s church, the oldest building on the site, the cross, although structurally sound, needed to be completely stripped back to the bare wood as years of harsh weather had taken its toll. The Shedders then had to re-stain and re-varnish the wood equating to a total of about 40 hours’ work.
No film has captured the hearts of a generation like Dirty Dancing. Relive the passion, indulge in the romance and celebrate the greatest movie soundtrack of all time. Recast and re-scripted for 2016, it’s all down to Kellerman’s end of season show.
The men from Gosport Shed have been kept busy by HMS Collingwood as they have also just finished building a new sign from scratch for the Base’s Woodentots nursery. Ian Bainbridge, the Shed’s Workshop Manager, explained that the Shedders are now working on restoring two cannons for HMS Nelson, having just finished making candle holders and a new sign for a church in Alverstoke. They have also refurbished an historic diving bell for the Diving Museum and renovated a lampstand outside St Vincent College. Jim Coleman said, “The Gosport Men’s Shed is a good thing, it’s like the WI for men! Sometimes men are encouraged to come along by their wives but once they’re here they usually stay.” Brian Richards, the Shed’s Facebook photographer, added, “When men are at work, they have their circle of friends there that they can say hello to every morning. After retirement, lots of men find they have no contact with that network and they miss that contact every day. For ex-servicemen it’s even worse so Gosport Shed provides that camaraderie. We’re a strong team.” The Shed movement started in Australia in the 1990s and the Gosport branch, founded in 2013, is acknowledged as one of the largest in the UK with around 140 members.

The Magnificent South West OZ Perth and South West Australia has the shortest travelling time from the UK and it is just about to become that little bit quicker with Qantas starting a direct flight from Heathrow to Perth from the Spring of 2018, reducing the travelling time down to 18 hours. Despite being the nearest gateway to the UK, its popularity as a tourist destination has never matched up to its East Coast neighbours, mainly due to the fact that it does not have such icons as the Opera House and Bridge at Sydney or the Great Barrier Reef of Queensland and that at 5 hours from its nearest neighbour it is somewhat isolated. But the fact that it is so isolated and that it is 6 hours shorter in travelling time is maybe a reason to look at South West Australia as a holiday in its own right rather than an add on to an East Coast itinerary. Having just returned from spending 2 weeks on a self-drive tour of Perth and South West Australia I can confirm that it really does have an awful lot to offer as a holiday Destination. It may not have the Aussie Icons but it more than makes up for it in it Coastal Scenery, abundant wildlife, mesmerising Karri forests, some of best food and wine on the planet and of course the happy positive can do attitude of the Australian people that makes holidays in Australia such a fantastic experience. Perth is a great city to start your holiday at with Kings Park and the Swan River 2 of its major attractions. Kings Park is actually larger than New York’s Central Park and has many great walks to enjoy along with its Botanical Gardens, whilst The Swan River offers a great way to see the city skyline and learn a little bit of its history at the same time, and what’s better than a twilight cruise watching the sun go down.
From Perth you head south down the coastal road with many opportunities to stop, including Bunbury Dolphin Discovery Centre where you can learn all about the dolphin and take a cruise out to witness them first hand in their natural habitat. Further stops include Rockingham to visit the Little Penguins and at Mandurah

for a cruise around the manmade canals, with more opportunities to spot Dolphins. After around 2 and a half hours driving you will find yourself at the Northern End of the Margaret River where you should stop for a few days. The Margaret River is famous for its wineries and can claim to have some of the best wine Australia has to offer, with over 160 wineries in the region, taking a wine tour is a must whilst also finding time to visit one of the regions lighthouses and many impressive and colourful caves. Before moving on you should visit the Underwater Observatory at the end of Busselton Jetty, which is also the Southern Hemispheres longest jetty at 1.8KM. An hour further south and you are in the far South West corner of Australia where you can enjoy the rugged coastal scenery at Augusta Lighthouse and maybe take a photo of where the Southern and Indian Oceans collide. Next stop is Walpole, the striking coastline of the Southern Forests stretches across 140 kilometres, where beautiful Karri forests sit atop rocky cliffs, and beautiful white sandy beaches are pounded by the wild Southern Ocean. Before moving on you should visit the Valley of Giants Treetop walk and take the Walpole Wilderness Cruise, a half day cruise like no other. Depending on time Albany may well be your final stop before heading back to Perth, this old whaling towns must see attraction is The Gap and Natural Bridge lookouts where you can get close up to the magnificent blowholes, the historic whaling station is also well worth a visit whilst my favourite photo opportunity is the lesser known Dog Rock. This is just a small sample of what the South West has to offer and if you have time you should visit Wave Rock and definitely end your time in Fremantle where you can take a ferry to Rottnest Island to visit the Quokka’s and take a ghost tour of Fremantle prison.

5 minutes with New Band... Making waves in the city! Within just twelve months Daniel Tidbury has excelled from Hiraeth making his first mark on canvas to being invited to adorn the walls of a London Gallery. Three of his stunning works were on display at Jona Quest Art in the heart of London-East’s cultural hub, Greenwich up until July.
Sometimes a band comes along that supersedes all expectations, and LOOP was lucky enough to meet one such band recently, a group of four local lads from Portsmouth and Southampton, got together as friends & online and have only been performing together for just 7 months recently Headlined at “The Joiners” in Southampton for their second gig…. We got to have a chat in the green room before they went on stage! Welcome Hiraeth, thank you for inviting us along to your second gig, I bet you are buzzing to be headlining. We are really lucky we got the opportunity to play on a stage that so many other cool bands have, like OASIS, REEF and COLDPLAY, its progressed quite quickly. Introduce yourselves to the readers. Matt who is our Lead Singer and guitarist, Tine who is Base guitar Pete who is lead Guitar and Tom who is their Drummer. We all get on like a house on fire, “there is no rivalry” we don’t really argue as creatively we all bring something different. We work on it as a whole and break it down bit by bit, one of our songs took 6 months to write.. It evolves sometimes from a couple of chords.
Morning Glory - Daniel Tidbury
For the past decade Daniel has been working as a graphic designer and photographer. Although immersed in the creative industry Daniel has always been looking for a more expressive release. Back in the summer of 2016 he began working on a series of sea and sky-scapes from his studio on the south coast and since then things have gone from strength to strength.
We don’t really put ourselves in a particular Genre, and our music isn’t for everyone, we have a unique sound but don’t set the bar anywhere, if we write something and we think it sounds good then great! Who decides your set list? We have a limited set of songs at the moment as we have just started out, but we are always improving them & writing new material. We write all our own stuff. Tom said “we play what we can” Where would you like to see yourselves in say. 6 months to a year? And would you like to travel to other countries? Matt “yeah, we’d love to travel to other countries but I think that will come in time”, Base Guitarist Peter said “we’d love to do festivals, I have family in Italy and Holland and may be able to get some gigs over there who knows.. We’ll have to wait and see”! You have an interesting name, what does it mean? Well we loved the way the name looked and sounded said Matt, it’s a nice Welsh word that actually means homesickness, but none of us are, it’s a talking point. Who inspires you? We like a lot of different artists, like the Way David Bowie wrote, he didn’t write trying to make something difficult, he had Ziggy Stardust as a character & we try to get into that mind-set, not to try and sound like anyone. As long as we are happy with what we are doing that’s all that matters! Then if other people like it that’s good too. Out of ten who is the weirdest? TINE..laughing.. he ate about 10 jam tarts before the last gig… We are all a bit weird in our own way I guess. 28 | The LOOP

Space to Breathe - Daniel Tidbury
Daniel’s striking colourful paintings were discovered as researching curators at Jona Quest were looking for emerging artists to feature. Having received rapturous reviews from fellow artists and collectors, Daniel comments; “The last twelve months have been extraordinary. Almost immediately the work started to gain interest and there’s nothing more validating as an emerging artist than people investing in you with their time and enthusiasm. It’s thrilling and I’m very excited about the future.” You can see Daniel’s work online at www.danieltidbury.co.uk.

Locks Heath Swim Squad swam superbly when they competed at the Swim out your Skins Meet at Waterlooville during the weekend of 10th and 11th June. The swimmers swam 133 swims, 103 personal bests, 21 gold, 16 silver and 16 bronze medals. A special mention to James Hall (14) not only did he win silver in the 400 free but also secured himself a club record, well done young man. Harrison Kennedy (13) continues to train hard, it’s been a while since his last medal so big congratulations on securing bronze in the 200 free and gold in the 200 back. Young Toby Ellis (9) continues to progress earning himself gold in 50 free, 100 back and 100IM. Thomas Larby (12) has not trained properly since November due to injury. The boy did himself, his parents and coach proud, he managed to get personal bests in all of 7 of his races, he went on to win gold in his 50, 100 and 200 breast (also an impressive 9 sec PB), silver in 100IM, and bronze in 200 IM, a fantastic day for the boy. Finlay Norris (10) won 5 medals throughout the weekend, gold in 50 breast, 100IM and 100 free and silver in 110 back and 50 fly. With young Joshua Beaudro it was all about securing new PB’s in 4 out of his 6 races and a gold in his 100 back. Jan Stoop (14) one of our older boys competing swam very well, resulting in silver medals in his 50 free, 50 fly and bronze in his 200 free. Scott Hutin (12) was also on form as he brought home silver medals in 200 back and bronze in his 100 fly. Not to be outdone by the boys the girls also proved themselves to be on top form. Once again young Eloise Lamb (9) who is still new to competing won gold in 100 free and bronze in 50 back, 100 breast and 100IM. Eloise’s sister Shannon Lamb (13) also a swimmer in the squad also had a successful day winning gold in 50 back, 200IM, 200 back. Great day for both girls. Layla (9) and Mia Day (12) also sisters both swam brilliantly, Layla won silver in 100 free and Mia gold in 100 fly, 100 breast, silver in 400 free and bronze in 50 fly and 100 free. Evelyn (12) and Matilda (11) Hall are siblings to previously mentioned James, the days success continued with the sisters and Matilda brought home gold in 200 back, bronze in 100 back and Evelyn silver in her 200 IM, 50 breast and Bronze in the 100 back. The amazing Amelia Ayling was once again on form as she won gold in 200 IM, silver in 400 free, 50 back, 50 fly, 200 back, 200 free, 6 medals equals a very successful day. 2428 (Hedge End) Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets What would you say if there was a way that you could fly an aeroplane before you drive a car? Interested? Read on and you will find out how! 2428 (Hedge End) Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets is a thriving unit which accepts cadets between the ages of 12 (and in year 8 at school) and 18 and is on the lookout for new recruits. We are also on the lookout for adult staff members – why should the Cadets have all the fun!?
The Royal Air Force Air Cadets can be traced right back to World War 2 when the organisation was responsible for assisting with the training of aircrew. Since then the role of the organisation has changed somewhat. It is now more about providing skills which will be useful for adulthood including teaching leadership and team working skills, fostering the spirit of adventure and encouraging an interest in aviation which goes without saying! Many famous people have been a part of this famous organisation including Olympians, Actors, most of the Red Arrows and even a former James Bond! It has been a busy year for the squadron with cadets travelling all over the South to take part in activities. How would you like a behind the scenes tour of Heathrow Airport? Our cadets have done that. How would you like to fly a Boeing 747 Simulator? We’ve done that. How about a flight in the back of a Chinook helicopter? Guess what, done that too! Our cadets have also helped out at, and led the Hedge End carnival procession along with fund raising for the Poppy Appeal and Royal Air Forces Association. The possibilities and activities really are endless. The organisation really does help young people (and staff!) build their C.V’s. We take part in the Duke of Edinburgh scheme and are lucky enough to have one cadet and staff member currently finishing off their Gold award which will see them go to Buckingham Palace to accept their award! Cadets from 2428 are also well underway with study towards BTEC qualifications and potentially lifesaving first aid qualifications; all of this happens from day one! If you are a keen sports

person you have the potential to represent the squadron at a number of sporting events and even represent the entire region which really puts Hedge End on the map! First, nothing can be finalised without both parties making complete disclosure of their assets. Some people might not like this but there is no realistic alternative. Therefore, be prepared to produce copies of pay slips, bank statements, shares and building society accounts and anything else showing what money you have and where it is. It must be up to date. Secondly, remember that the children come first. They almost certainly did when you were together and that will not change just because you are now divorcing. The children will need somewhere to live. The parent they live with will need an income to provide for the children. Thirdly, get good legal advice early on from some one who is a specialist. In today’s world changes come about quickly and you need up to the minute expert advice. Perhaps you do not feel ready to take any action but need advice to understand exactly where you stand. We are good listeners and will give you balanced, considered advice to help you to have the confidence to make the decision which is right for you. Eastleigh Borough Council’s popular theatre and contemporary arts venue, The Point in Eastleigh has been awarded funding to once again become one of the Arts Council England’s National Portfolio Organisations (NPO). This morning (June 27th) the Arts Council announced it was awarding the venue in Leigh Road £500,000, over four years, in funding as one of its prestigious NPOs. The Point’s ‘ambition and quality of provision’ and ‘the positive impact both on individual members and on Eastleigh’ have been highlighted by the Arts Council in the venue’s success in achieving continuous funding, there is also recognition that the venue’s solid support from the borough council has been recognised in the investment decision. Nationally, austerity measures mean that local authority funding has been reduced in arts and culture leading to financial instability for many companies and organisations. However, bucking this trend, Eastleigh Borough Council’s support of its extensive arts and culture programme is the envy of many. Eastleigh Borough Council Leader Cllr Keith House said: “We are delighted that the Arts Council has recognised The Point as a National Portfolio venue once again. The Point, now in its 21st year has developed enormously during this time and provides a much loved cultural asset for the town centre and wider community. As a council, it’s too easy to resort to service cuts in light of national austerity, but we want something different for our residents. The benefits of arts and culture to wellbeing is widely recognised, but additionally, the venue and its staff are committed to helping artists develop careers in the performing arts, which in turn helps to benefit our local economy.“ Says Nick Tustian, Chief Executive of Eastleigh Borough Council: “It is testament to the dedication and hard work of our staff that The Point has been recognised in this way. The Point helps us to deliver important aspects of our corporate priorities around health and wellbeing and our local economy - we are proud of its extensive work into the wider community and with borough schools - as well as the development of artists. We’re delighted that alongside the borough council’s funding, the arts council has recognised the venue and its work with the award of the highlyprestigious National Portfolio Organisation status.”

Jay Geddes
www.jaygeddes.com
Chef to the Stars Food lover and celebrity catering chef Jay Geddes tells the Loop what it takes to be a professional chef. Jay Geddes is a renowned chef born & bred in Southampton who has made his way to the top one step at a time. He has come from working with Michelin star chefs and serving the England football team in the Grand Harbour Hotel in Southampton, to catering for stars from Beyoncé and Rihanna to the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Kings of Leon. We caught up with him to learn what it takes to be a top chef, and to gain tips on how to cook like a professional. What inspired you to get into cooking? “Around nine years ago I was working as a chef in the Grand Harbour Hotel in Southampton. The head chef at the hotel was a great guy and a phenomenal Michelin star cook. He taught me a lot in very short space of time about cooking, and I grew under him there. “One day I got an unexpected phone call on my day off, which I was expecting to be work asking me to come in! But it turned out to be the head chef from work. He said he had been contracted with some work that he couldn’t do, and that he had recommended me instead. He told me he knew me, trusted me and believed in me to do a great job. “I went to Dublin to work on the catering team for a Chris Brown show, and at the end, the head chef asked if he could keep my number. I thought nothing of it. But before I knew it, I was working with Rihanna and Beyoncé!” Do you get to travel overseas much for work? “Elite catering are based in London but we also have offices in America, so we’ll look after the clients on this side and they’ll look after them on the other side. “Justin Bieber was a last minute call for a one-off date in Cardiff. I get a lot of one-off dates where they only need me for one gig, or I could get booked for a whole 6-10 date tour. “I don’t get to go overseas much myself, but I get to travel all over the UK and occasionally I will venture into Europe. I’ve got Guns & Roses at the Stade de France in Paris next month and, unless I get approached privately, that’s about as far overseas as I go on a regular basis. 44 | The LOOP

“It’s not just the musicians that need feeding either. We often cater for comedians and even game shows – everyone has to eat, not just the musicians! “These tours that the musicians and comedians go on can be extremely demanding, and we have to give them food that will keep them going on their tours. I’m also a qualified sports nutritionist so, although the artists usually know what they want before they go on tour, I can assist them with food that will keep them going for the couple of hours they are on stage, as well as their fatigue from travelling. Food is fuel; and on these tours it’s really important that you look after your body. “In terms of food trends, everyone seems to be into avocados recently. They are really popular with the artists as well as the public.” Who would be your dream audience to cook for? “I would say the Royal Family, but I’ve already cooked for them! A long time ago I was at Windsor Castle, and again it was complete luck. One of the chefs got sick and somebody recommended me for the job. They did a quick background check on me and that was it! That meal we covered for about 300 people, so it certainly was hard. “I never really get phased or star struck around any of the stars I cook for; I just love cooking! Whether I’m cooking for Beyoncé or John Smith, you will get the same amount of passion from me in my cooking. “If you love food, and you love your job, it doesn’t matter who you’re cooking for. As long as there is a smile on the person’s face when they eat the food – that’s all that matters.” What are your plans for the future? “Next year I’m hoping to bring out a cookbook. It’s early days yet but we are thinking about a Christmas release next year, so I’m very excited about that. The dishes that will be in the cookbook are going to be as simplistic - and at the same time as tasty - as possible. “A lot of people can look at a recipe in a cookbook with 10-15 ingredients and think to themselves ‘I can’t do this!’ So rather than including loads of ingredients, we’re going to keep it simple with minimal ingredients, whilst still including lots of good flavours.”
Any tips for cooking? “The best piece of advice I could give is that people eat with their eyes. If you put a dish in front of someone and it looks beautiful, and uses lots of different colours, it adds that something extra to a dish. It’s almost like food fashion. Keep it simple and sexy – that’s my motto. “I sometimes go to down to the community college as a guest just to give some of the young up and comers some advice
and to give something back to the community. At the moment there is a national shortage of chefs in the UK. We need to get more people into cooking and catering in the UK.” Jay can be hired for personal/private dinner parties anywhere in the world. Please see his website for details or take a peak at his food on instagram @chefgeddes
Fish Cakes, Beurre Blanc Sauce Ingredients For The Fish Cake 450g cod or haddock fillet 2 bay leaves 150ml milk 350g Maris Piper potatoes 1 tsp finely grated lemon zest Small handful fresh chopped parsley 1 tbsp chopped chives 1 egg flour for shaping 100g panko breadcrumbs 4tbsp sunflower oil watercress to serve Beurre Blanc Sauce 1 cup of dry white wine Half white wine vinegar 1 tablespoon finally chopped shallot 1 lb unsalted butter, cold Kosher salt to taste Method 1 Mix all the sauce ingredients together. Set aside. Lay the fish and bay leaves in a frying pan. Pour over the milk and 150ml/1/4 pint water. Cover, bring to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer for 4 mins. Take off the heat and let stand, covered, for 10 mins to gently finish cooking the fish. 2 Meanwhile, peel and chop the potatoes into even-sized chunks. Put them in a saucepan and just cover with boiling water. Add a pince of salt, bring back to the boil and simmer for 10 mins or until tender, but not broken up.
6 Heat the oil in a large frying pan. To test when ready, drop a piece of the dry breadcrumbs in - if it sizzles and quickly turns golden brown, it is ready to use. Fry the fish cakes over a medium heat for about 5 mins on each side or until crisp and golden.
3 Lift the fish out of the milk with a slotted spoon and put on a plate to cool. Drain the potatoes in a colander and leave for a min or two. Tip them back into the hot pan on the lowest heat you can and let them dry out for 1 min, mashing them with a fork and stirring so they don’t stick. You should have a light, dry fluffy mash. Take off the heat and beat in 1 rounded tbsp of the sauce, then the lemon zest, parsley and chives. Season well with salt and pepper. The potato should have a good flavour, so taste and adjust to suit.
Beurre Blanc Sauce
4 Drain off liquid from the fish, grind some pepper over it, then flake it into big chunks into the pan of potatoes. Using your hands, gently lift the fish and potatoes together so they just mix. You’ll only need a couple of turns, or the fish will break up too much. Put to one side and cool. 5 Beat the egg on a large plate and lightly flour a board. Spread the breadcrumbs on a baking sheet. Divide the fish cake mixture into four. On the floured board, and with floured hands, carefully shape into four cakes, about 2.5cm thick, One by one, sit each cake in the egg, and brush over the top and sides so it is completely coated. Sit the cakes on the crumbs, patting the crumbs on the sides and tops so they are lightly covered. Transfer to a plate, cover and chill for 30 mins (or up to a day ahead).
1 Cut the butter into a medium (1/2 inch) cubes and return the butter cubes to the refrigerator to keep them cold, which is very important. 2 Heat the wine, vinegar, and shallots in a saucepan until the liquid boils, then lower the heat a bit and continue simmering until the liquid has reduced down to about 2 tablespoons. This should take about 10 minutes. 3 Once the wine-vinegar mixture has reduced to 2 tablespoons, reduce the heat to low, take the cubes of butter out of the fridge and start adding the cubes, one or two at a time, to the reduction, while you whisk rapidly with a wire whisk. 4 As the butter melts and incorporates, add more butter and keep whisking. Continue until you only have 2-3 cubes remaining. Remove from heat while whisking in the last few cubes, and whisk for a moment or two more. The finished sauce should be thick and smooth. 5 Season to taste with Kosher salt. Traditionally the shallots would be strained out before serving, but doing so is optional. Serve right away. contactus@loopmagazine.net

Brioche and white chocolate Advice on how to spot a SCAM Lesley Rose, Advice Services bread and butter pudding Manager for Citizens Advice Winchester District gives advice on how to spot a SCAM. with rum soaked raisins Q. I’m planning a long holiday and have been struggling to find travel insurance for a reasonable price. I’ve found a good deal from a Facebook advert but my friend thinks it might be a scam. How can I be sure if it’s legitimate? A. Your friend is right to raise the possibility that it might be a scam and you should do some research on the company before making a purchase. Insurance is a financial product and the seller must be registered with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Check they’re listed on the financial watchdog’s register which can be viewed on its website. If they’re not named, take your business to a different provider as the seller will not be legitimate. If they are listed, it’s still worth doing further checks on them. A good starting point is comparing the price of the insurance deal with similar offers from competitors. Big discounts are often a telltale sign of a scam, but it could also be that the policy is cheap because it doesn’t provide adequate cover. Ask for a copy of the full policy so you can check it against where you’re going and what you’re doing. If the seller won’t provide one, or says they will only give it to you it after you’ve paid, don’t give them your business. Once you know the seller is legitimate use a secure payment method, such as a money transfer service like PayPal, to pay for the insurance. Don’t pay with a bank transfer, and don’t go ahead with the deal if they ask you to. For further advice contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 03454 04 05 06 or Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or call into your local Citizens Advice centre.

Do you love getting afloat? The LOOP finds out more about Hamble-based RYA… The Royal Yachting Association, or RYA, as it is more commonly known, is the national body for all forms of recreational, competitive and professional boating in the UK. Whether you’re a beginner, an expert or somewhere in between, the RYA is there for people who love being on the water, helping them to make the most of their sport. It represents dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sportsboats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, inland cruising and personal watercraft. The purpose of the RYA is to promote and protect safe, successful and rewarding British boating and is recognised by all government offices as being the negotiating body for the activities it represents. It continually fights for the rights and freedoms of its members, the majority of whom choose to go afloat for purely recreational non-competitive pleasure on coastal and inland waters. Each year the RYA helps thousands of its members with specialist cruising, environmental, technical and legal advice ranging from purchase issues and registration, to consumer disputes, salvage and VAT to name just a few. The RYA also administers the international racing rules of sailing (including windsurfing) in the UK, and the sport of powerboating. It’s coaching and development schemes actively support over 600 of Britain’s top sailors, from talented juniors to Olympic and World Champions. But whatever your age or experience, the RYA seeks to kindle, nurture, and support a life-long passion for boating in all its forms by all groups of participants. Targeted participation programmes provide opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to get out on the water including RYA OnBoard, RYA Sailability; sailing and boating for disabled young people and adults and RYA Active Marina. The RYA’s training department sets and maintains recognised standards for training for both leisure and commercial boating through a network of more than 2,500 RYA Recognised Training Centres across almost 50 countries, with more than 220,000 people per year completing an RYA training course. Whilst RYA Training originated for leisure purposes more than 40 years ago, for the last 20 years the RYA has also developed an extensive suite of courses and statutory qualifications that are formally recognised for commercial use not only in the UK but also in more than 20 other countries around the world and informally by many others. UK organisations that have adopted RYA training include the Royal Navy, RNLI, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the MoD, the Police and the Fire Service. RYA qualifications are also widely used within the superyacht and workboat sectors and our dinghy, windsurfing and power boating instructor qualifications are the qualifications of choice for those working within the watersports industry. The RYA is also a leading maritime publisher, with over 110 titles including books, eBooks and DVDs on its current list. Its publications are highly regarded internationally and RYA titles have been translated into more than 20 foreign languages. Sailing helps to shape young people’s life chances across the South A leading education thought leader believes young people across the South can benefit from learning to sail after completing a landmark project on developing character strengths with the sport’s national governing body, the RYA.
Professor Bill Lucas, Director of the Centre for Real-World Learning and Professor of Learning at the University of Winchester, combined academic findings on the role character has to play in shaping young people’s life chances with research into life skills developed through sailing. He concluded that sailing nurtures seven key strengths. These are creativity, confidence, teamwork, communication, determination, independence and performance (the process of learning how to improve). The Department for Education (DfE) has committed to helping schools ensure more children develop character traits, attributes and behaviours that underpin success in education and work. Prof. Lucas said: “I’m struck by how much of a child’s life in school, can be focused on exams and how much more needs to focus on the other things that help them to do really well in life including resilience and learning to work with others. “If you do those things better, exam results get better and people who have these attributes get on better in life. They are much happier and adaptable to embrace challenges.” The project was undertaken as part of the RYA’s relaunch of its youth grassroots programme, OnBoard, which provides low cost sailing opportunities for local school and youth groups so more kids aged 8-18 can learn to sail. Prof. Lucas continued: “All the evidence says for a young person to flourish in the 21st century the character attributes they need are on that list of seven. It is no longer a question as to whether these things are important it is now all about how you do it.

“Sailing can provide an answer to that ‘how’, whilst also providing all the other benefits sailing brings like having fun with friends and family, being active and getting outdoors.”
Bringing it to life Portchester Sailing Club is one local club that runs the RYA OnBoard programme. The club has around 20 juniors as well as 12 OnBoarders out on the water every week during the summer months. Also, through being an official RYA OnBoard club, they have worked with 8 local and rural schools and youth groups, including most recently Swanmore Cub Scouts. They believe Prof. Lucas’ endorsement will help show more local parents, teachers and youth workers that sailing can make a real difference to a youngster’s prospects. Geoff Pavey Senior Instructor and OnBoard Organiser at PSC said: “We’ve always known the life skills young people learn from sailing go far beyond the practical skills of controlling a boat. It’s great that has now been shown to match what the educational research says.”
Getting the kids involved As well as the life-long learning skills there are plenty of other reasons why RYA OnBoard is a fantastic way to get your youngsters out on the water. OnBoard is run through your local OnBoard accredited sailing and windsurfing club or centre with youngsters able to get out on the water each week-they don’t need to have sailed or windsurfed before! The qualified OB instructors teach everything they need to know about being in a boat or on a board and in most cases you
New look OnBoard Over the past 12 years OB has already seen more than a million young people get out on the water but the intention is to continue to see this number grow. The programme was officially relaunched in June by TV presenters Angellica Bell and Michael Underwood, with Paralympic Gold Medalist Helena Lucas. At the Docklands Sailing and Watersports Centre, Angellica said: “As a parent I’m always looking for ways to get my children outdoors and active. The best thing about sailing and windsurfing is that they are fun and affordable activities which are available to children of all backgrounds. They also teach valuable and important life skills.”
will be on the water from day one as part of a group with an instructor close at hand. They will receive detailed and expert instruction, but OnBoard is mainly about being on the water in a relaxed and fun environment – so youngsters really enjoy and make the most of their time on the water. The programme also links to the school curriculum in many subject areas including geography, science, engineering and maths. “Sailing has given David the confidence he can do things,” explains a mum whose 15 year old son David has benefitted from OnBoard. “He is dyslexic and had become introverted and frustrated. But, although not academic, he is very practical and intelligent. Sailing brought him out of himself. He is now a confident young man who helps teach the club juniors and has his RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate. He never would have talked to adults before, now he is always asking their advice!”
After having their very first dinghy sailing session just a few weeks ago, she added: “Michael and I had a great time out on the water, the instructor was fantastic despite the fact that we had never done it before. We didn’t even get wet which is a bonus and the children had loads of fun!” RYA Director of Sport Development Alistair Dickson added: “OnBoard is crucial in providing the foundation for the future of our sport. This new approach enables us to share the real value of sailing with new audiences who may not have considered it as an activity before. “It is a change in mindset, but it is an exciting opportunity for people to see sailing with all the positive benefits that we know it can provide. We look forward to inspiring even more youngsters of all ages and backgrounds to get out on the water and discover what sailing can offer them.” For more information about RYA OnBoard and how you can get involved in OnBoard in the South visit www.rya.org.uk/onboard If you’d like to find out more about how to get out on the water and start your sailing adventure visit www.rya.org.uk/go/startboating contactus@loopmagazine.net

The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Winchester, Councillor David McLean (left) presents the Lifetime Achievement award to Ron Wilson (right)
Ron Wilson of the Meon Valley Lions Club, has received a Lifetime Achievement Award for services to the local community, from Wickham Parish Council. The main purpose of Lions is to provide support to groups and individuals in local communities, so it’s rewarding for someone as committed as Ron to receive such recognition for his work. Ron is a long-standing servant to the Wickham area community, through his involvement with Meon Valley Lions Club. He joined the Lions in 1982 and at the age of 86 is now their longestserving, active member. He has recently been awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship (the highest form of recognition for Lions members) and has always played a central and active role in all aspects of the club’s operation. Currently, Ron is the Lions Club Almoner and responsible for members’ welfare, having previously held office as Club Treasurer, as well as leading on our Youth programme, acting as the interface with local schools, youth clubs and Scout and Guide groups. For many years, he has run the “SpekTrek” programme for the Lions in the Meon Valley area, collecting unwanted, used spectacles from local optometrists and feeding them into the Lions’ national SpekTrek network scheme for distribution in developing countries. He also liaises with local doctors’ surgeries to ensure they have adequate supplies of Lions’ “Message in a Bottle” - a device used in emergencies to warn medical service personnel of an individual’s specific medical conditions or drugs regime. Ron was presented with his Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual Wickham Parish Assembly. Councillor Angela Clear read Ron’s nomination before The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Winchester, Councillor David McLean made the presentation, to loud applause from his colleagues and Wickham residents alike. 52 | The LOOP

St. Mary’s New Garden of Remembrance procured a lovely Book of Remembrance and a wonderful stand, hand-crafted by another local, Gavin Pettit. The stand used the wrought-iron work from the old Choir Stalls and so provides a fitting mix of the old and new, bringing the heritage of St Mary’s into the modern era. The Book of Remembrance will be with us by the end of June, as there is a long lead time to procure it. Meanwhile we have started displaying names of loved ones on separate pages in the stand, with a month to a page; when you read this, names for May and June will be on display.
We wrote last year in this Parish News about our hopes to establish a Garden of Remembrance in our village’s beautiful churchyard. The good news is that, thanks to the generosity of many, all the external work is now complete, and we plan to dedicate the Garden during our 10.00am service on Sunday 9th July. The bulk of the heavy-duty task was undertaken by the local company, Helyers, and a veritable army of volunteers helped to finish off the work – see the picture! This work has involved clearing the flat ground at the east end of the churchyard, and reshaping the bank that had grown up there over the years. The flat area was then seeded with rye-grass and the bank with a woodland mix of grass and plants that we hope will encourage wildlife and insects in an ecologically friendly way. The side of the slope towards the Warsash Wasps playing field has been treated differently, with saplings for low hedge plants used to help stabilise the slope. Paving in the shape of a Celtic Cross has been laid, with the areas between the arms of the cross turfed and edged with low variegated euonymus plants. Interment of ashes will be done in these areas in the future. The Garden is finished off with a central circular bench and a flowering pear tree and will be open for interment of ashes following the dedication. Because we do not intend to use memorial tablets with the Garden area, so that it can be used in perpetuity, we have also

Remember that the names of loved ones of parishioners or anyone associated with Warsash in any way can have their names entered in our book; we suggest a minimum donation of £25 to do this. We have decided to use three different symbols in the Book to indicate where people have been laid to rest. These have been designed for us by local graphic designer Natalie Brobin are shown below. Further details and application forms can be obtained from the church office or from our website: www.stmarywarsash.org.uk This symbol is derived from the Holy Spirit motif behind the altar in the church and will be used against the names of those who are laid to rest, either buried or interred, in St. Mary’s Churchyard, other than in the Garden of Remembrance. This symbol is designed to reflect the shape of the Garden of Remembrance and will be used to indicate the names of those whose ashes are interred in it. This symbol retains the cross shape and colours of the other two but has more of a compass shape to indicate the names of those who are not in St. Mary’s churchyard: they could be anywhere else in the world! If anyone would like to help maintain our wonderful churchyard, please contact Mr Mike Ford whose details are elsewhere in tis Parish News. Please feel free to join us for our Communion Service on 9th July which will include the dedication of the Garden, but also enjoy it and our beautiful church at any other time too!

The power of ..... love© Hippies, flower power and VW campervans are not usually associated with cricket, but on Friday’s Open Day at Netley Court Residential Care Home, all were synonymous as a part of the home’s annual Friendship Festival and Open Day.
1864 were delighted to be invited along where we met not only many staff who had really entered into the spirit of the day with full on wigs, loud shirts and flowers in their hair, but also a number of residents and guests too. Once again, it was hugely rewarding to see just how cricket engages people in conversation and provides a great platform for new opportunities to take place, opportunities which can provide great hope. Amongst those who we had a great chat with was Peter, who told us at the outset that he was not a cricket fan! However, he proceeded to tell us about his family in Tasmania and particularly their adopted child (his grand-daughter) who was originally from Pakistan, and is a huge cricket supporter! Peter spoke lovingly of his visits down under where she enjoys taking Grandad to the cricket at Bellerive Oval in Hobart when he goes out to see them. He was interested to hear about Hampshire’s own Tasmanian links to our current Championship skipper, George Bailey. We look forward to hearing more from Peter’s grand-daughter in Australia and to her stories of cricket there.

We also met David and his wife who have never been to the Ageas Bowl, but are now looking forward to joining us at one of the remaining Memory Days scheduled for this season. Now, we know we are not supposed to have favourites from a day like this, especially when each person we met had such fantastic memories to share, but we did have a rather large soft-spot for Bob! Bob’s room at Netley Court is covered with cricket photos, illustrating his great love of the game which he played for many years, turning out for Hamble and other local sides too. Bob is also a big Portsmouth FC fan, and has been involved with the blues for a long time too. As the picture shows, it was rewarding to see Bob light up when he got a bat in his hand once again. We really look forward to working with the Care Staff at Netley so that we can keep in touch with Bob and his family and learn more about his love of the game. Words by; Simon Young
Building excellent academic foundations at Woodhill School At Woodhill School, we strongly believe in the saying: “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it,” and that is why we continue to work in a way proven over many years. We have seen time and time again our ‘OldFashioned Teaching Approach’, combined with an understanding of today’s fast paced world, works for our pupil. This style of teaching, combined with our unique family atmosphere and manageable class sizes, separates us from other schools, and shows through in everything our pupils achieve. We offer an affordable alternative to state schools and the opportunity to acquire an excellent academic foundation for your child. Our class sizes never exceed 15 children, and all our pupils leave, having passed secondary private school entrance exams, with many offered scholarships. How do we achieve this? Small classes plus excellent teaching equals all children reaching maximum potential. Headmaster Mike Dacombe said: “School is a very big part of a child’s life. Children thrive when they feel safe and valued and they learn and succeed when they can see the progress they are making. “A huge part of the work we have always done at Woodhill School involves creating the right environment for children. When our pupils are asked what they think of their school, our pupils often liken it to a big family.
“Aspects of development seldom mentioned in the curriculum, such as confidence, courtesy, friendship, sportsmanship and kindness, are as important to us as academic achievement. “Woodhill school also aims to keep true to its beliefs that limited class sizes have a big influence on how pupils achieve great results. Over the many years of teaching, we have found that keeping classes to no more than 15 pupils is most beneficial for their learning. Our average class size at present is under 12 pupils. In this way, every child stands out in the crowd and can shine”.
Is your child getting lost in the crowd? One of the biggest factors influencing a child’s education is class size. We have a maximum class size of 15 so that we can ensure that each child gets the attention and help they deserve.

Space Times £100m boost for UK space sector to ensure UK is equipped to stay ahead of the competition. Universities and Science Minister Jo Johnson underlined the government’s commitment to the UK space sector as he visited the future site of a new £100m state-of-the-art government-funded satellite facility. The Space sector forms a key part of the Government’s Industrial Strategy to spread economic growth across the UK. The £100m package includes £99m of Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund investment to create a National Satellite Testing Facility (NSTF) on the Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire, alongside a £4m investment for a new National Space Propulsion Facility to develop and test space engines at Wescott Venture Park in Buckinghamshire. Part of the Government’s Industrial Strategy, the significant funding boost will enable UK industry to competitively bid for more national and international contracts and ensure we remain a world-leader for space technologies for decades to come. Visiting the UK Space Gateway on the Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire, where the NSTF will be based, Universities and Science Minister Jo Johnson said: “From Cornwall to the Highlands and islands of Scotland, the UK space sector underpins industries worth more than £250 billion to the UK economy, and through our Industrial Strategy we will unlock the sector’s potential to grow further. “Located in a cluster known for research excellence, these new facilities will help UK companies be more competitive in the global market for space technology and support our ambition to capture 10% of the global space market by 2030.” Due to open in early 2020, the new NSTF will be a worldclass facility for the assembly, integration and testing of space instruments and satellites, positioning the UK to capitalise on the estimated 3,500 -10,000 satellites that are due to be launched by 2025. It will also facilitate the build of bigger and more technologically advanced satellites and remove the need for UK companies to use test facilities located abroad. The NSPF will allow companies and academia to test and develop space propulsion engines, alongside a new facility for Reaction Engines 72 | The LOOP

where the revolutionary SABRE air-breathing rocket engine will also be tested and built. Dr Graham Turnock, Chief Executive of the UK Space Agency, said: “This investment will enhance the capability of the UK space industry. Having access to a National Satellite Testing Facility will help companies develop and encourage new business to come the UK, while the development of new facilities at Westcott builds on what is already a world-class UK space propulsion sector.”
RAF Henlow Could Become ‘Blue Abyss’ Space And Sea Centre A new £120m facility for space and deep sea research is all set to be developed at RAF Henlow. Astronaut Major Tim Peake tweeted his excitement about the plans.
Blue Abyss would host the world’s biggest 50m deep pool, a hotel and astronaut training facility. The Blue Abyss team hope to reuse some facilities at RAF Henlow, including a centrifuge base for high-G astronaut training. If approved it will be part of a multi-million-pound plan to develop a science, innovation and technology park at the base.

The acquisition of the site would enable the UK to become a major player in the international space industry. Blue Abyss’s proposal remains under discussion, in a statement the MoD released “The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) representing the Ministry of Defence, are exploring multiple opportunities in partnership with Central Bedfordshire Council to secure the sustainable redevelopment of the Henlow site.” Blue Abyss’s Managing Director, John Vickers, believes this project is important for the country: “I think it puts Britain firmly on the map … It’s akin to people talking about building lots of airports and aeroplanes. Well, who’s doing the pilot and aircrew training? That’s absolutely where we want to come into things.”

Beyond the Rings of Saturn Nothing has the ability to stir a space nerd’s soul like a new, unexplored horizon. NASA’s Cassini mission has gained attention after we first featured it in Space Times, and it deserves it. The Cassini space probe has been exploring Saturn for 13 years now, hanging out with Saturn’s moon Enceladus and its geysers. In November 2016, the probe went into the penultimate phase of its life: the ring-grazing orbits, designed to sample the particles that make up Saturn’s famous rings. This April, Cassini descended even closer to the planet’s surface, and into a stratum that no craft has ever explored before: the space between Saturn and its rings. From there, the probe, as featured in the last issue of the LOOP, will continue to descend until it makes destructive impact with the planet’s surface. NASA has promised it will be snapping pictures until touchdown. When: Friday 15th September Excitement Level: 10/10 OSIRIS REx Next Steps Over billions of years, space rocks have impacted onto Earth, taking bites out as they do. therefore NASA wants to get a piece of an asteroid. So last year they launched OSIRIS Rex. OSIRIS Rex is a spacecraft equipped not only to orbit the carbon-rich asteroid Bennu, but to take some samples back to Earth. Albeit will be a long time until the mission shows the money—the spacecraft isn’t due to touch back down to Earth until 2023. But in 2017, it will take a crucial intermediary step.
Tim Peake training in a pool with the European Space Agency
Since its launch in September 2016, the spacecraft has been cruising around the solar system, biding its time for its sample mission. But after a year of chilling in the icy void, the Earth and its associated gravity will be used as a slingshot, increasing OSIRIS REx orbital speed and tweaking its trajectory to line up with Bennu before heading straight for it using the cover of space to aid its mission. Quick News Final Frontier Countdown On deep space missions, navigating using the light of the stars, pirate-style—just isn’t good enough. So what’s a spacefaring navigator to do? When GPS doesn’t work once you get out beyond its satellites? In the past, they’ve had to rely on the Deep Space Network, a system of Earth-bound antenna arrays and an ultra-precise atomic clock. however, space has become crowded with the modern space era, and not just with nearearth objects like comets and asteroids. This is where the Deep Space Atomic Clock, launching 2016 is known as ‘The fully autonomous mercury-ion atomic clock’ and it will revolutionize space navigation for the future space farers. By making it function more like terrestrial navigation. The implications include: improved accuracy, and cutting down on those pesky communications lag times. The Trend Edit
Beat the heat without sacrificing your style this summer with four key trends handpicked from the runways by Thomas Marrington
For men and women
MENSWEAR: VARIED STRIPES
One of the benefits of this is having old faithfuls to rely on, which designers will occasionally take upon themselves to subtly transform in ways which make them feel more relevant, yes, but not daring or trend-driven enough to render them unwearable six months post purchase. Take, for example, the nautical theme. Every Spring, swathes of white and navy striped attire sweeps the high street, and not
for a bad reason. Easy to pull off and universally flattering, simple stripes are a sartorial staple for a reason. But now, consider the varied stripe - rather than the done-and-dusted single stripe, mix up the pattern, as seen on the runways of London’s Lou Dalton, Tiger of Sweden and ubertrendy Fendi. With varying widths, this optical illusion shirt from H&M slims the figure as it draws the eyes down vertically, rather than across the body horizontally, emphasising the length, rather than the width of the torso.
LOU DALTON SS17
Between menswear and womenswear, men’s clothing is the one most likely to stay static. Unlike womenswear, which can evolve and change dramatically over the course of even just a year, the men’s shows present, yearin-year-out, a sort of sameness - albeit for minor tweaks in fit, cut and colour, the styles remain largely unchanged.
H&M, shirt, £17.99
WOMENSWEAR: STATEMENT SHIRTING Larger than life, exaggerated, feminised menswear has been in the zeitgeist for a few seasons now. Although not new, the trend has really hit its stride when it comes to reappropriating the classic men’s shirt. Seen on the SS17 runways at Jacquemus, Stella McCartney and Off-White, now is the perfect time to strike with this look - best served striped, oversized and left untucked. The high street offers fantastic versions of this at every price point, but for the best of the best, one must go to the holy grail of runway-to-high-street editions - Zara. The Spanish high street giant has a fantastic selection of styles, but personally, I think this voluminously-sleeved belted tunic is perfect for the warm weather. Airy enough to provide plenty of ventilation, this billowy striped shirt is a total statement piece.
OFF-WHITE SS17
Worn with the simplest of blue jeans and flats, hair tied up or let down loosely, you can let the shirt say it all. Minimum effort, maximum payoff.
ZARA, TUNIC SHIRT, £39.99 74 | The LOOP
contactus@loopmagazine.net
MENSWEAR: PIPING Elegant, sophisticated, best suited for the evening; these are all symptoms we associate with the diagnosis of a sleek line of piping, following the edges of a suit trouser, the pockets of a blazer, or the collar of a silk shirt. But consider the way in which Wooyoungmi, Dolce & Gabbana and Officine Generale used the trimming for their SS17 shows - well, they all actually used it just as is - lining the edges of shirts, jackets and trousers. Conversely, the high street has adapted this into quite the wearable casual style.
modern element, a garment is instantly lifted from dull to up-to-date. Plus, the style is incredibly versatile and subtle enough not to be avant-garde. Mango’s iteration for men features a sky-blue stripe descending down the edge of their navy smartly-cut joggers. It’s a fast upgrade which elevates the uber-comfy streetwear classic and gives it a Vetements-y, urban sophisticate spirit. WOOYOUNGMI SS17
Rather than a thin line of piping, thicker strips of contrast fabric have been used to line the edge of jogger bottoms, technical jackets and polo shirts. By adding this quick and
MANGO, CONTRAST JOGGERS, £19.99
WOMENSWEAR: PRAIRIE BELLES Amidst all the modernised, streetwear influenced trends, it can be nice to slow things down, turn to look around and reminisce on the way things were. Apparently, London label Preen felt the same, with designers Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi sending down beautifully floaty, whimsical prairieesque dresses, complete with real pressed flowers covering the model’s clavicles. Giambattista Valli also indulged in this Mid-West sensibility. His delicately floral organza creations, angelic and feminine, glided down the runway to the wide-grins of fashion editors, collectively tired of trendy but constrictingly sweaty summer clothing. This Mid-West, Southern Belle style has proved popular during recent years under various guises - here, Topshop’s Bardot floral dress is the perfect example. Still tight around the top, it flows in folding waves around the bottom to create a pretty, feminine effect all too lacking in the modern women’s wardrobe. PREEN SS17
In our quest for cutting-edge style we often forget the things that made up happy to begin with. In the case of the Prairie Belles trend, looking back provides a beloved style to reintroduce to ourselves. Topshop, Floral Bardot Dress, £46 contactus@loopmagazine.net

Health & Fitness
Changing part of your lifestyle at any stage can be difficult and staying the course can be even more challenging. Too often we shy away from doing the necessary because the end goal seems too far away or we cant even visualise it through fear or overthinking.
Average Geoff We’ve had a great streak of sunny weather recently so I thought what better excuse to get outside for this month’s workouts!!
Fear is indeed real. Although its not tangible it exists for everyone inside their own mind. That fear is a two way street that can be used to your advantage if you acknowledge it and learn how to use it.
This month brings a medicine ball workout and as always, a bodyweight workout that will help you achieve those fitness goals.
You wont succeed at everything all the time but allowing fear to take over will prevent that success ever becoming a reality.
For the medicine ball workout its 5 rounds of 40 seconds work and 20 seconds rest. For the Bodyweight workout there are three levels all with 5 rounds and 60 seconds rest between rounds. Beginner 10 reps of each movement, Intermediate: 20 reps & Advanced: 30 reps of each. But before you get your sweat on let’s talk about exercising mental strength and turning healthy behaviours into habits and part of a lifestyle. The right mindset and attitude has the power to propel you forward to your goals. The wrong one will paralyse you and keep you from achieving your goals.
What do you want to achieve, how are you going to start? You might not know how you’re going to get to that end goal yet but by taking that first step you’re making a commitment to change. This change will not only affect you but also others around you. People will notice a change and may even be inspired to make their own little change. Every workout you smash out, that’s a step. Every proper meal you eat, that’s another step and before you know it you’ve picked up momentum and what seemed hard at first is just normal to you now. Endure that struggle, embrace fear, welcome that change and recognise that you are responsible for your life from this point onwards....what do you want from it. So get up, get out and get it done!!

Abshot & Atlas With over two decades of Abshot Country Club providing rackets and fitness facilities to the local community and beyond, it was time to expand their market with the introduction of Atlas gym a strength and conditioning centre catering for a rapidly growing market situated at 89 Southampton Road. Abshot has always thrived on its quality and commitment of staff and instructors ensuring each member is greeted as an individual, with a strong emphasis on encouraging the whole family to enjoy activity. The Crèche has been operational for 15 years, allowing parents to keep up with their workouts or simply have some time to chill with the peace of mind their children are with them and cared for. The all inclusive membership of over 40 studio classes per week, squash, tennis, indoor swimming pool, sauna & steam room, gives the variety to try different activities with no extra costs. In addition our qualified enthusiastic and knowledgeable instructors offer complimentary gym induction and competitive Personal Training rates for those requiring further guidance or motivation. Atlas is still a niche market, where other gyms have introduced a small strength and conditioning area and maintained the norms of vast amounts of cardio equipment and weights machines, Atlas provides the
minimal of cardio equipment but the very best of strength training machinery. The equipment is custom built by Waston’s Gym a UK based Company and an outdoor astro training area is what really sets us apart from other gyms.

Eastleigh’s popular Park Sport scheme opens This year’s Park Sport scheme has opened and received over 2,000 online bookings in the first few hours of the scheme going live on the Council’s MyEastleigh website page. Hundreds of parents have been busily signing their children, aged between 8 and 16 years, onto the scheme that provides the chance to try an exciting range of sports and activities this summer as part of the Council’s hugely popular Park Sport programme. Golf has already completely booked and some sessions of other activities including sailing, fishing, tennis and cycling are also fully booked. Now in its 13th year, Park Sport 2017 will take place at over 25 local parks and community facilities across the Borough. Over 300 bookable sessions will be provided in this year’s scheme in sports including Baseball, Basketball, Cricket, Cycling, Dance, Fishing, Football, Golf, Martial Arts, Netball, Sailing and Yoga. And this year, because of growing demand, more tennis sessions will be available thanks to support from the Lawn Tennis Association.
Dee Haas, Charlee Bennett and CPRE Hampshire President, the Earl of Malmesbury
The scheme, that provides heavily subsidised activities at just £1 per session, is made possible thanks to ongoing support from VIVID Homes (formerly First Wessex), Eastleigh Borough Local Area Committees, and Parish and Town Councils.
Charlee Bennett joins CPRE Hampshire from Save the Children’s head office in London, where she led on the UK Poverty campaign. Prior to that, she worked for World Animal Protection on global campaign mobilisation. She holds a degree in Oceanography with Physical Geography from the University of Southampton.
Cabinet Lead for Leisure, Councillor Alan Broadhurst, said: “It’s fantastic to see so many local parents booking their children. It was great to see so many young people here performing so many exciting moves as part of the skate jam and I am delighted to launch this years exciting Park Sport scheme”. The scheme, organised by Eastleigh Borough Council and sponsored by VIVID (formerly First Wessex). If you are interested in taking part in this year’s event visit www.eastleigh.gov.uk/parksport or call 023 8068 8344
The Hampshire branch of environmental charity the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) has recruited a new Chief Executive to work with volunteers campaigning to protect the county’s countryside.
Charlee Bennett said: “I’m looking forward to working with CPRE Hampshire staff, volunteers and the Hampshire public to protect and maintain our beautiful surroundings. We believe that together we can protect our natural environment, keeping Hampshire a place to work, relax, recreate and enjoy for future generations.” CPRE Hampshire Chairman, Dee Haas said: “We are delighted to be welcoming Charlee to the CPRE team here in Hampshire. Charlee’s experience with volunteers, team management and campaigning offer us an opportunity to work with our many supporters and members to more effectively defend the countryside we love”. Charlee starts work at CPRE Hampshire’s branch office in Winchester on 3rd July 2017. Alongside campaigning, she will be responsible for fundraising and the management of the branch. She will lead on the charity’s campaign to create a new Green Belt in South Hampshire. This campaign sits within its wider strategy for the whole of Hampshire. The ‘Hampshire Strategic Vision’ supports CPRE Hampshire’s mission to defend the countryside from damaging development and promote sustainable development.
