Moja Indian Restaurant Sarisbury Green Invited to taste the culinary delights at Moja’s Indian Restaurant. Being a fussy eater and a converted Chicken Korma lover, I was delighted when the waiter recommended a Kashmir Chicken with pineapple. The waiter was attentive and listened to my likes and dislikes and his recommendation was spot on, the Kashmir Chicken was presented fantastically and tickled all my taste buds and was delicious, shame I had over indulged on the Onion Bhaji starter. The food would satisfy all who visit two fold big portions and great quality. My colleague and I had a great evening the restaurant was busy on a Tuesday night which can only be a recommendation in itself! Sarahs dish looked equally appealing as mine and momentarily I had slight food envy, although as said earlier I am not the most adventurous eater so to order a Chilli Chicken Masla would have been one step too far! Not for Sarah she thoroughly enjoyed the dish, and this was after a King Prawn starter. Great food, great atmosphere, ample parking I for one will be returning to Moja’s with my family, who will love the Bollywood Music playing in the back ground. All in all a great evening. Thanks Moja’s see you again soon.

Fareham students showcase talents at hair and beauty competition

Fareham College’s annual Hair & Beauty Showcase took place at Ferneham Hall last month, demonstrating the flair, creativity and exceptional talents of its current cohort of budding hairdressers, beauty therapists and make-up artists. The event provided an extravagant showcase of innovative and imaginative hair and make-up creations, all compiled by Fareham College’s dedicated Hair and Beauty students. For over two months, students have been competing in heats held at the College, with those shortlisted securing the chance to display their creations at the showcase event at Ferneham Hall in front of a packed audience. The winners of each category, who were inspired by the glamorous themes of ‘Broadway’, ‘Fantasy’, ‘Heroes’ and ‘Classic Hair Up’, were decided by a judging panel of industry experts including hairdressers and beauty therapists from commercial salons and leading companies in the sector. Lindsey Smith, Hair & Media Make-up Lecturer, said: “The entrants’ work was of an extremely high standard and the showcases were excellent. The students loved taking part and the experience of seeing their work exhibited at such a high-profile event was very rewarding.” Nigel Duncan, Principal of Fareham College, commented: “Every year the work showcased

by our students gets even more impressive, and this year is no exception. It has been a dazzling display of talent and professionalism. The students who took part are distinct and confident in their evident talents and really show the high quality of the courses we run : the standard of work clearly demonstrates that if you want to work as a professional stylist, therapist or hairdresser, Fareham College is the place to be.” Vicky Morrall, Head of Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy praised her department’s dedication in putting on such an event: “This has been the most fantastic showcase of

creativity and hard work by our full and part time students and I am so proud of how masterfully and professionally they have converted a concept into a work of art.” The showcase gave students not only the chance to demonstrate the practical skills they have learnt throughout their course, but also the opportunity to interpret a brief, work in a competitive environment and experience the teamwork, organisational and customer service skills needed in order to succeed in the fast-paced, dynamic and ever-evolving hair and beauty industry.

Eric Robinson Solicitors Welcomes ‘Eric’

Hampshire Law firm, Eric Robinson Solicitors has announced the firm’s latest recruit - a wideeyed, bright blue owl. Have you met Eric the Owl? If not, then you certainly will as this character is set to become the hardest working bird across the south coast. Originally introduced to the public as part of Eric Robinson Solicitors’ 50th anniversary celebrations last year, Eric proved such a hit with the public, he

has now become a full-time employee. “It all started in 2013 when we were looking for something fun and cute to send to clients and give out at events,” explains Catherine. “We saw some hand-sized, owl-shaped foam models that we could have in gold for our Golden Anniversary and, since the owl has always been a sign of wisdom and knowledge, we thought it was a good fit for a law firm. We had absolutely no idea of the public reaction that would follow. “We had people asking us how much they were, parents wanting them for their children and babies giggling with excitement when handed them. We were initially surprised, but absolutely delighted as it this ‘ice-breaker’ led to an astonishing amount of worthwhile conversation.” Over the summer, the firm ran a competition where people were asked to take Eric on holiday and take pictures at various locations. The firm received pictures of Eric on beaches across Europe and America, in front of historic monuments in cities including Rome and Vancouver and enjoying afternoon tea in Somerset. The winner sent in a picture of Eric with a train driver of the oldest train in Norway. “Eric gained incredible momentum over the

year, so now he has evolved into a full time ambassador for the firm,” says Catherine. “He has his own website www.erictheowl.co.uk where people can download Eric’s Top Tips on a whole range of legal issues.” Eric made his first appearance the Daily Echo’s Business Works exhibition (pictured) but will be making appearances at events across the region throughout 2015. “Of course, we want Eric to be a source of fun, but in all seriousness, he is proving a great business asset to the firm. For our private clients, especially, it is about providing character, approachability and trying to aid people’s understanding of what we offer in a fresh, original and recognisable way. “Having said that, many of our corporate clients talk about and say how much they enjoy Eric. No matter what service you are using, whether you are at work or home, everyone enjoys a smile.”

Miller Homes welcomes lifelong local residents to new development

Miller Homes South is delighted to welcome the latest couple to its beautifully landscaped development at Sarisbury Green. Carol and Barry Brown have lived locally for almost 50 years, having moved to Sarisbury Green in the swinging sixties. Barry, who recently retired from owning his own electrical business, and Carol, a former accounts secretary, wanted the benefits and convenience of owning a new home without moving away from the much sought after location they have called home for so many years. Carol explained: “We’re both in our 70s, so wanted a new smaller house which would be easier to maintain than our current property, but we didn’t want to move away from this fabulous

location. We’ve been here since the sixties were in full swing and have made many friends along the way. Lots of our family live nearby too. “As soon as we had a quick look at the house we just knew we had to have it. We viewed other developments in the locality but the options on offer and the flexibility offered by Miller Homes were far superior. “The garden is very private with gorgeous trees at the bottom and we were given free turf. Carpets and flooring were also included in the package and we had the final say on the décor.” Admirals Wood is a development of individually designed two bedroom apartments and two, three and four bedroom homes. It’s set in a delightful suburb with a strong sense of community and a welcoming, village-like ambience, near to the banks of the Solent estuary. Set between Southampton and Fareham, the uncrowded, tree-lined layout of Admirals Wood offers an exceptional blend of seclusion, amenity and convenience. Carol and Barry have moved into a three bedroom Montgomery style property with stylish

French doors and windows to three sides of the large living/dining room, introducing lots of natural light. Tracey Lee, area sales and marketing director for Miller Homes, said Carol and Barry’s story is a perfect example of how Miller makes the home-buying experience as easy as possible: “It’s wonderful that the Browns are able to stay in a place where they have built such long and happy lives together in a home that matches their aspirations. Our team worked hard to find their dream home, complete with a choice of options, to make sure the finishing touches were fully in keeping with their style and tastes. “We are here to help customers with every aspect of their dream home, from initial enquiry until the moment the removals lorry draws away. Our 5 Star Award for Customer Satisfaction in the Home Builders Federation (HBF) National New Home Customer Satisfaction Survey, just goes to show our success in matching people like Carol and Barry with their perfect place.” For more information on Admirals Wood, call or visit the sales centre, which is open daily from 10am to 5pm or call 0808 250 6014. Details on other Miller Homes developments can be found at www.millerhomes.co.uk.

Portchester Memorial Gardens

Staying connected to loved ones Losing someone close to you is never easy – but even more so when it is your mum or dad who passes away. For those struggling to deal with grief, it can help to have the physical focus of a place where they feel close to their loved one, which is why many choose to inter their parent’s ashes within Portchester Memorial Gardens. Explains Sarah from Fareham: “My mum passed away three years ago and I still miss her. I visit the Gardens regularly to take flowers, sit at her grave and tell her about what’s going on in my life and what the kids are up to. The gardens are so peaceful and lovely, that I always feel lighter after I visit.” Memorials can be placed in a variety of themed areas cultivated to offer year-round beauty within tranquil grounds – including the Garden of the Sea with its sculptural anchors and wooden jetty, and the Hill of Roses, flooded with summer scent and colour. The sympathetic team at the family-run Memorial Gardens are experienced in helping to create fitting, lasting tributes where ashes can be laid to rest. Give them a call to discuss your requirements.

Sit on your lawn – don’t mow it! rapidly with the thought of a lawn that requires no mowing, watering or maintenance a great incentive. Artificial turf has come a long way since it first came on the scene in the mid 1960’s. Today, there is no comparison with what was available then or even what was available just three years ago. One of the downsides of the earlier artificial grass products is that its appearance was too perfect. Now you can buy turf that has ‘dead thatch’ and short brown blades mixed in with the green tufts to give it a more realistic look. It is hard wearing and perfect for families who have

As summer approaches caretakers of lawns everywhere ask the big question: ‘Will there be a drought this year?’ Because we all know if there is, no matter how hard we work on our lawns, the grass will turn parched and brown. However, perhaps you belong to the growing trend of people who no longer worry about hosepipe bans or lack of rain? In recent years the interest in having a synthetic lawn is rising

children and pets. No more muddy footprints! Want to see what an artificial lawn can do for your garden this summer? Need some advice and help? Call into Hambrooks of Titchfield where you will find a selection of branded artificial lawn and fully trained assistants to help you. After all, wouldn’t you prefer to sit on the lawn this summer rather than mow it?

Southampton Sea Cadets Do you need a new challenge for 2015? The Sea Cadets can offer this. So far in 2015 the Sea Cadets have had success, firstly they won an award for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, at Southampton we had the highest number of young people participating in and achieving awards during 2014. This was measured against all of the Sea Cadet Units in the Southern Area of the Sea Cadet National Organisation, some 79 Sea cadet Units. This is only one of the many varied activities we can offer.

January saw the first major success of 2015 with the Junior Sea Cadets (10 – 12 year old age range) entering and winning their District 5 a Side Football competition. After playing again five other teams they were declared winners with a maximum 12 points and only conceding 1 goal. A first for the Cadets of Southampton. Throughout the year we will be offering many varied activities on and off the water, with some planned exciting new developments this year. The Unit in Southampton during 2014 installed their own pontoons in to the river which has massively increased access to the river for our waterborne activities. This year we are working towards becoming a recognised training centre with the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), so that we can offer internationally recognised qualifications to our young people. We are also actively fundraising to purchase new boats for our fleet, these will be two sliding seat rowing boats (Yoles) these will enhance the qualifications we can offer in conjunction with British Rowing, who knows we may even find a future Olympic Champion. On dry land we can offer a huge number of opportunities many of which are nationally recognised and will enhance any young person’s Record of Achievement. To find out more please contact us, If you are a young person looking for a new challenge, an Adult who would like to do something for the good of our young citizens either as a front line Instructor or as a Management team member supporting the Charity work.

In whatever capacity you would like to get involved we would love to hear from you. Southampton Sea Cadets, 41 Vespasian Road, Bitterne Manor, Southampton SO18 1AY Tel: 023 8022 9050 Email: southamptonscc@yahoo.co.uk www.seacadets.org/southampton Follow us on Facebook: Sea Cadets Southampton

Top Tips for Cruising with Kids When did you first fall in love with the water? If you, like so many sailors and motorboaters, had the first seeds of your future passion sown while you were a kid, what do you remember about those days? Excited about being on a boat? Wanting to help? Loving feeling like a grown up? Now how many times have you been preparing to drive your boat off the dock and thought how useful it would be to have an extra pair of hands to help you? There are heaps of ways you can get your kids involved in being that extra pair of hands when cruising under sail or power. The key? The skipper having the experience and confidence to give children responsibilities so the helm gets the help they need while the youngster develops a love of being on boats and wants to learn more. Win-win! So what can you do to making cruising with kids a great experience for all? ‘Are we there yet?’

and inexperienced adults alike a relaxed, practical and fun insight into ways to help. Passengers don’t always realise what a helm has on their plate, but they can have such a valuable role to play in basic tasks and personal safety, and whole families can take bits of ownership of a day on the water. Start Yachting has no lower age limit and provides a two-day introduction to the yacht, ropework, getting underway, rules of the road, man overboard recovery, clothing and equipment, emergency equipment and precautions and meteorology.

Bored kids do not make for happy kids or pleasant, relaxed cruising! But engage them before you even step on the boat, and get them excited about what lies ahead, and chances are you will keep their attention much longer. Let them help you with passage planning, show them maps and charts so they know where you are heading, tell them about and show them pictures of things of interest you might see along the way, including landmarks and wildlife, get them looking at the weather and telling you what the is forecast, practice knots.

By the end of the course participants will have experienced steering a yacht, sail handling, ropework and being aware of safety on board.

Show them what clouds to look for and, if under sail, how to spot the wind – where it’s coming from, gusts on the water, and using their face to detect changes in direction. Make them feel like what they are contributing is essential in getting you afloat. Slow it down Cruising is meant to be relaxed and when kids are involved not rushing becomes even more of a factor. The last thing you want is overhyped kids charging along jetties or around the deck. You are in no hurry so keep things calm, take everything slowly, be measured and keep smiling. A little bit of knowledge If you are planning to take the kids afloat with you for the first time this year, there are two short RYA introductory courses for the whole family that give kids

Start Motor Cruising is newer, with kids as young as eight able do the course. With the way the course is run it can be done as a one-day standalone course or at the same time as Mum, Dad or both are doing their two-day Day Skipper or Helmsman. You can find out more about RYA Training Courses at www.rya.org.uk/training Safety first A child’s sense of adventure and inquisitiveness means you can often need eyes not just in the back of your head but both sides of it too! A few simple rules can help. Lifejackets should be worn at all times, and if you are telling a youngster to wear a lifejacket you must lead by example and do the same. Meanwhile, when they are moving around deck they should apply the rule ‘One hand for you, one for the boat.” If everyone is smiling when you come back ashore, you have done your job! Happy boating! Getting out on the water for the first time is becoming increasingly easy with the numerous RYA recognised training centres and charter companies which are based all over the world. If you want to venture out on the water, under sail or power, then look no further than rya.org.uk to help you take your first steps afloat.

America’s Cup Racing America’s Cup Racing returns to British waters this summer when the America’s Cup World Series (ACWS) takes place in Portsmouth 23-26 July 2015. The America’s Cup World Series is a collection of regattas leading up to the 35th America’s Cup featuring the best sailors in the world battling it out on sleek AC45 catamarans that ‘fly’ on foils at astonishing speeds. Every race will count in the series with vital points being secured ahead of the America’s Cup Qualifiers in Bermuda come 2017. Often described as Formula 1 on water, the racing sees the crews pushed to the peak of fitness to enable their AC45 to reach spectacular speeds of over 40mph.

For the first time ever, this amazing spectacle is coming to Portsmouth where the world’s sailing superstars will lead their teams out for a titanic battle on the Solent. Never before in the UK has such fast and furious sailing action been so accessible to spectators with miles of close quarter vantage points available along Portsmouth’s historic waterfront. The racing in Portsmouth will take place at almost touching distance from the onshore spectators and cannot fail to be spectacular, thanks to the big screens, family entertainment and a regatta village all happening on Southsea Common. The shore side entertainment and spectator experience will be a fully ticket holder access only event. Huge quantities of shore side tickets have already been registered for or purchased, with over 90,000 bookings made to date. Tickets to the free-to-view Waterside Festival Arena have just sold out for the Saturday and Sunday and the official Fanzone Arena is getting close to selling out. Onshore spectator Tickets are only available via: www.ticketmaster.co.uk/acwsportsmouth The Waterfront Festival Arena is a free to view area located on the main Southsea Common. Racing will take place right off the common with the leeward gate and finish line literally metres off the shore – a prime viewing spot. The Fanzone Arena is the place to get under the skin of America’s Cup World Series – see the skippers and sailors close up, watch the official skipper presentation, the press conference and the parade of sail close up with expert commentary about each team. A prime venue with food and drink and entertainment for all, option to upgrade and reserve your grandstand seat for the day. Absorb yourself in all of the information about this event – the history, the boats, the technology, the sailors, the personalities, the racing rules, the points system…the list is endless - THE place for sailing fans to hang out.

out on the water. Friday 24th July is Preview Race day. All of the competing teams will be out testing the waters and familiarising themselves with the race course. Saturday 25th July is the first official race day - when the serious action kicks off. ’Super Sunday’ 26th July is the second official race day - and when points count for extra so this is the day that will decide the event winner. The Portsmouth event will be a historical moment in British sport as it’s the first time a British America’s Cup team will race in an official America’s Cup event on UK waters since 1851. Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR) was conceived in 2011 by four times Olympic gold medallist and 34th America’s Cup winner, Sir Ben Ainslie, with the long-term aim of challenging for Britain and bringing the America’s Cup back home to where it all began in 1851.

Whether you’re a keen sailor or new to the sport – this is a weekend not to be missed!

The event programme and entertainment kicks off on Thursday 23rd July with the official opening of the race village, presentation of the skippers and then a spectacular parade of sail. A first glimpse of the competing teams and the boats

Hampshire Cheese and Bubbly The beautiful rolling hills and verdant countryside that surround our area offer magnificent views and enjoyable walks. The landscape is not just great for leisure activities but also for the cultivation of wonderful culinary delights! The grassy pastures around Hampshire have enabled dairy farming to flourish. This has resulted in Hampshire having some of the best artisan cheesemakers in the South of England. Underneath the lush grass are rich chalky slopes similar in nature to that of the Champagne region in France. It’s no surprise then that we also have award winning wine producers making worldclass sparkling wines. The result is a brilliant marriage of cheese and wine! Louisa Mason, of Flavour Tastings, which specialises in showcasing British artisan cheese and wine at her cheese tasting events, champions the cheese and wine producers in the area. “It is no surprise that the Hampshire hills lend themselves to dairy farming, where the cows can eat the rich, lush grass of the South Downs and surrounding areas,” Louisa says, citing New Forest cheesemaker Lyburn as a prime example. Lyburn, located in the New Forest, is a traditional dairy farm that makes a variety of hard farmhouse cheeses. “My favourite from Lyburn is Old Winchester, a cross between a very mature cheddar, Old Amsterdam and Parmesan,” Louisa explains. “It is a really meaty cheese that is adds another dimension to a cheeseboard as well as being perfect to nibble cubed! Its texture is unusual as it much drier than a cheddar.” While many would associate British farmhouse cheese with cheddar styles, small farms across the UK are offering a huge range of cheeses that are truly unique. She recommends combining Old Winchester cheese with Hambledon’s Meon Hill Rose. Hambledon vineyard, near Portsmouth is the oldest commercial vineyard in the UK and has been on the current site since 1952 when Major General Sir Guy Salisbury-Jones planted a number of different grape varieties and went on to release the first commercial range of English wines. Today, the vineyard is owned by Ian Kellett and comprises of 50 acres of vineyards and a new gravity-fed, state-of-the-art winery - the only one of its kind in the UK.

Amazingly we have two British Cheese Champions in Hampshire. For those who enjoy soft creamy cheese, 2013 Champion Tunworth produced by the Hampshire Cheese company near Alton is a must. This rich, creamy cross between Camembert and Brie has won awards for a reason! It is unctuously rich and full-flavoured with a slight sweetness – a great addition to any cheeseboard “A really fabulous cheese that warrants a English sparkling Wine like Hambledon’s Meonhill Chardonnay,” Louisa says. “Hambledon’s pure Chardonnay blend from different years has vibrant acidity that cuts through the creaminess whilst the slight nuttiness and pepper flavours complement the robustness of the earthy notes in the cheese.” Hampshire is also home to Rosary Goats’ cheese that won Supreme Champion in last year’s British cheese awards. Made just outside Salisbury this cheese is made from milk from a small herd of dairy goats. Each batch is made by hand. It has a creamy and fresh taste and an almost mousse like consistency. It pairs perfectly with English Sparking wine and Hambledon’s Classic Cuvée is a fabulous match. The fresh floral scents lift the aromatics of the cheese whilst the lively acidity cleanses the palette. With more than 700 types of British cheese available, including many amazing varieties from our area, now is the perfect time to ‘buy local’ and try an artisan cheese. Combine them with some of Hampshire’s fine wines and you have a culinary feast to remember! Of course these artisan cheeses are not always easy to find so keep a look out at farmers markets and good delis. Flavour Tastings also has an online shop specialising in local and British cheeses (www.flavourtastings.co.uk/shop). With the rich heritage and new innovations in the cheese and wine worlds, eating local has never been so rewarding! For more information on local cheeses and British cheese and wine tastings, visit Louisa’s website where: www.flavourtastings.co.uk and to learn more about Hambledon vineyard see: www.hambledonvineyard.co.uk

gardening 50 shades of green… As spring is finally here and we venture out into our gardens after a long winter, it is now a good time to check our trees and shrubs to make sure they are healthy and more importantly safe. As the branches sprout lush green leaves, it is very easy to visually check the canopy of trees to look for deadwood. Dead wood will have no life in it, no leaves and is very brittle. Trees naturally shed small dead twigs and branches. These depending on the situation of the tree can prove hazardous to pedestrians or property. However large quantities of deadwood could be a result from bad pruning in the past or a sign that the tree is starting to die. You might now notice that as you venture in to the garden for a cold lager or cold glass of wine with your barbecue in the evening the sun is now blocked by the tree in the bottom of the garden or you neighbours

tree is now blocking your sunshine. To regain the sun you can reduce and reshape the canopy of the tree ie prune the tree to make it smaller or thin the canopy ie remove small branches from the inside of the tree to allow light to filter through. If it is your neighbours tree and branches overhang you are allowed to cut back to the neighbouring fence line however the cut branches still belong to the owner of the tree. Your therefor have to offer the cut branches back as it is an offence under the theft act 1968 to keep them or remove them. However most neighbours are obliging and are happy for you to carry out work and remove the debris. It is best to talk to your neighbours first and discuss as it is always nice to stay friendly. If the height of the neighbours tree is a problem speak to them first see if they are willing to carry out the work if not offer to pay for the work to be carried out as they are under no obligation to carry the work out just because they are blocking your light. Before any work is carried out you will need to find out if your property is in a conservation area or any trees are protected by a tree preservation order. If your property lies within a conservation area you will have to gain permission to cut anything over 75mm in diameter or over 1.5 metres high. TPOs can be applied to any type of tree. It is a written order

which makes it a criminal offence to cut down, cut back or damage any tree or its root system that is protected. Anyone found guilty of such an offence is liable and in serious cases can be dealt with in court where a unlimited fine can imposed. To find out if you are in a conservation area or you trees are TPOed just ring your local council and ask to, speak to the tree team for a check. However if your trees are protected it is still possible to have work carried out, you just need to apply for planning permission to have suitable work done. A suitable arbourist should do this for you. A person needs to be qualified not only in using a saw but in husbandry of trees, knowledge in how to prune, but when to prune aswell. Pruning a tree wrong can result in the tree not healing properly and die back as can pruning at the wrong time. Tree surgery might seem expensive and you might get someone knock on you door claiming to be a tree surgeon or know a friend who says he can do this. Remember trying to save a few pounds now can be costly in the future as they could do more harm to your trees or damage to your property by dropping branches or even worse killing your tree go for someone who is qualified. With social media these days it is easy to get a recommendation. Words by Freddy James, Priory Tree Care

gardening Easy Lawn Artificial Grass has never received the greatest press, and has been a given a bad name in the past. Commonly associated with old astro-turf matting, the use of artificial grass has always been looked upon negatively within a domestic garden. These days, technology has advanced and artificial grass has come on leaps and bounds. With a huge variety of artificial grass ranges, it is becoming increasingly hard to tell the difference between the artificial and real grass. A low maintenance solution for professionals or families who want an attractive garden without the upkeep, artificial grass can provide this easy yet aesthetically pleasing solution.

Would you volunteer to pay a lifetimes tax in a single tax year? Following the changes to pension legislation on 5 April 2015 the Chancellor of Exchequer has invited everyone over the age of 55 with pension savings to cash in their pensions and pay a lifetime’s tax in a single tax year. John Stovell of Positive Solutions says “in the rush to access their retirement savings people have forgotten that pension plans were designed to pay retirement income for the rest of their lives. As pension income is taxable income; by choosing to cash it all in now, they are opting to receive a lifetimes income and pay a lifetimes tax in a single tax year. For instance a taxpayer with a £120,000 pension fund will be able to take a 25% tax free lump sum of £30,000 leaving a balance of £90,000 taxable. If they are already earning £10,000 per year then the £90,000 will push them into the 40% tax band and they will have a tax bill of £29,523. If they had income of £25,000 then they would also lose their personal allowance which would increase their tax liability to £34,646. The Institute of Fiscal Studies has said that the Treasury is hoping to benefit by £0.5bn in 2015/16, partly because some people will be caught in the tax trap. By 2018/19 it expects to raise an extra £1bn, as a result of people cashing in their pensions. If you are intent on cashing in your pension savings you should at least plan to restrict the money taken so that

your annual income does not exceed £42,865 in the year ended 5 April 2016 thus avoiding paying 40% tax. The danger facing many pensioners is that in the rush to access their funds they are blinded to the fact that although they benefitted from 20% tax relief when contributing to their pension funds they could now pay tax at 40%. However for people of working age there are substantial tax benefits to be gained by investing in a personal pension especially if combined with careful fund choices and good investment strategies. For example, a taxpayer made redundant in 2015/16 and receiving a lump sum of £120,000 will be taxable at 40% and will lose their personal allowance. By making a pension contribution of £20,000 to a personal pension, the fund will immediately be enhanced by £5,000 of tax relief to £25,000. A further tax rebate of £9,264 can be reclaimed from HM Revenue & Customs. The net cost of making the pension contribution is £10,736 and in return there is also a pension fund of £25,000 growing in a tax free environment . Moore McCusker is a Chartered Tax Adviser specialising in the use of pension saving vehicles to minimise tax liabilities and can be contacted on 01489 247047.

5 Tips to set up your bike so as to avoid injury

5. Cleat position At half way down the downstroke, the kneecap should be directly in line with the centre of the front of the pedal.

1. Get a bike that’s the right size The simple method used in the past was to stand over the top tube of the bike and measure the clearance 2” for a road bike and 3” for a mountain bike , this method is no longer reliable as shapes have changed. You can put your details into a bicycle frame calculator online.

2. Saddle height When the pedal is fully down(six o’clock )the heel of the foot should be able to just rest on the pedal with the knee straight and with the pelvis remaining level. If the saddle is too high the pelvis has to tilt sideways on the downstroke this can cause back problems and hamstring strains. If the saddle is too low the knee doesn’t straighten putting pressure through the knee. The hip may also be injured as it forced into flexion.

3. Look at the saddle tilt Start off with the saddle horizontal. Put a spirit level on the saddle and adjust until it is level. A forward tilt on the saddle transfers your weight through onto your hands and shoulders. A backwards tilt on the saddle increases the flexion at the lumbar spine and the pressure on the groin.

4. Handlebars Handlebars that are too low can cause back pain and wrist and shoulder pain. Neck pain may occur if you tilt your head up to see where you are going .

Shieldhall Announces Cruise Programme for 60th Anniversary Year The SS Shieldhall – the oldest passenger cargo steamship still active in Europe – has announced her cruise programme for 2015. The ship will be celebrating her 60th birthday with a special cruise in conjunction with her previous owners Southern Water on Sun 5 July, revisiting part of the route she followed whilst in her service between 1977 and 1985. Now, thanks in part to a £1.4 million HLF grant project ‘Saving Shieldhall: Learning through Conservation in Action’, Shieldhall is able to offer a varied and attractive cruise programme during the summer months. With MCA and ABP approval, Shieldhall will commence her 2015 programme on 30 May with a 2 hour Vikings! Cruise, remembering the 1000th anniversary of Canute being crowned King of England in Southampton. Other cruises being staged in May and June are a Docks Afternoon Cruise on Saturday 30 May; a Live Music excursion with Johnny Cash tribute band Cash Converted on Sunday31 May; Docks Morning and afternoon excursions on Saturday 13 June; a Titanic excursion on Sunday 14 June (with commentary, talks and book readings) and a visit to view the Round the Island Yacht Race on Sat 27 June. Highlights later in the year include a trip to see the Americas Cup World Series racing on Sun 26 July; a Cowes Fireworks Cruise on Fri 14 August and a Merchant Navy Day Cruise (Sat 5 Sept), remembering merchant seamen who lost their lives in World War 1 and World War 2. Once again, Shieldhall will be departing Southampton Waters for a week in Poole, from where she will make three trips to visit the Bournemouth Air Festival (Fri 21, Sat 22 & Sun 23 August).

guests can learn about the history of the docks and the sights and sounds of Southampton Water and the Solent.’ Guests on Shieldhall get a lot more than a conventional cruise along Southampton Water. Visits to the Engine and Boiler Rooms and the Bridge are actively encouraged by the team of volunteers who manage the ship. ‘We are told that the interaction with our volunteers is a highlight of everyone’s time on board’ said Graham. ‘We are also looking to improve levels of comfort for our passengers, with the inclusion of an awning on the upper deck proving a great success in 2014. We’re now much better equipped for whatever the great British weather can throw at us!’ Learning and participation activities are being developed for the 2015 season by Bristol-based Culture Force, whilst new interpretation by Henry Lyndsay will recall Shieldhall’s early dual role as a sludge carrier and passenger boat, carrying Glasgow residents ‘Doon the Watter’ during the summer months. Youth groups are not forgotten and are encouraged to visit the Shieldhall to experience a Training Day at Sea on Sun 28 June.

Shieldhall HLF Project Manager Graham Mackenzie is looking forward to an exciting year. ‘We’ve designed our cruise programme to offer something for everyone, from family friendly 2 hour cruises, to Americas Cup World Series and Fastnet Races, music cruises and specialist interest trips. We will be offering commentary on board, so our

‘Shieldhall is an excellent resource for local residents as well as enthusiasts’ said Graham. ‘With the ongoing lottery work we are opening up Shieldhall to new audiences with a diverse cruise programme and also through her setting for ‘alongside functions’ where the ship regularly hosts theatre, quiz and film nights. Few people could have imagined 60 years ago that Shieldhall would still be in service, providing pleasure to thousands of visitors who can rightly still enjoy the experience of ‘steam at sea.’

Rotary Banner Flying into space Locks Heath Rotary is hoping to be the first Rotary club in the world to fly their club banner in the International Space Station with the help of the first European Space Agency Astronaut Major Tim Peake. Tim is a local man from Chichester who has graduated through RM Academy Sandhurst and the Empire Test Pilots’ School to become an apache helicopter test pilot, also the first European to be successfully selected for astronaut training and to join the long list of would be astronauts. My link to Tim is through his Godmother Penny Scarbro who is also a member of the Locks Heath Rotary club; this gave me the idea of getting Rotary announced from space. If we could get Tim to take one of the club banners with him and I cheekily asked if during one of his space video transmissions he could, hold up our banner to the camera and to the world, Penny was successful in asking Tim, and now it’s watch this space.

Tim is scheduled to launch off in a Soyuz space rocket in November but I have just received news that he has been selected as standby astronaut for the crew changeover in May should he be needed. So he might be unpacking his personal belonging in space a bit earlier than expected and hopefully our Rotary banner along with it. The Rotary flag and the Locks Heath banner have been flying for decades but I think this will be its longest flight so far. John Hopwood

The origin of the club banner stems from founder members selecting an emblem which depicts the club members at that time. Rotary is an organisation of likeminded business men and women most of them were from the Warsash area and of course have close links to sailing. Ivor Hughs a club member who owned a local Graphics design company successfully designed the spinnaker which was accepted by the club. Most Rotarians like to travel for business and pleasure and some, have taken a banner with them just in case they visited local Rotary clubs wherever they were, and Rotary protocol, throughout the world is to exchange banners, so there are hundreds of Locks Heath Rotary banners around the world, all that is left is to ‘go where no other Rotary flag has gone’. Tim has sent, in response to my request, two of his space suit patches ( badges) one with a personal message on the back, this is something I will treasure and certainly pass on to my Grandaughters as a valued piece of local history and of course family history.

The Banners journey. Penny Scarbro is my personal link with the Peake family and has passed on important information regarding the banner. There are certain criteria that had to be met relating to size, material and weight, the important one being material, and after a breath taking wait I was able inform Penny that the banner was made of pure silk, and this was acceptable to NASSA. We have just had confirmation from NASSA via Tim that it has been packed with his personal items and ready to be loaded into the shuttle cargo rocket which is known as a Space X’s Dragon Cargo Capsule and will be launched soon and will arrive at the ISS after a three day orbital chase to catch up with what will be his home for six months.

• The opportunity to learn more about Tim’s mission at local science centres, with a show designed by the Science Museum, the National Space Centre and Jodrell Bank, starting in autumn 2015; and • Chances for schools to host amateur radio live links to speak to Tim whilst he is on the ISS. Primary schools will be able to get help in delivering these educational activities from an enthusiastic and experienced team of space ambassadors based around the UK, run by the UK Space Education Office (ESERO-UK). The list of educational activities that are already available is on the Space Education Office website where teachers can download teaching resources without charge. There are also details of grants to help schools do something special to follow Tim’s mission – this could be activities to involve the whole school and the local community during the mission (including art, design, drama, food and music), equipment to carry out experiments, or maybe something inspiring that we haven’t thought of yet.

NASA releases first colour photo of Pluto In 2006 Pluto was reclassified from the ninth planet in our solar system to a dwarf planet. Alan Stern, principal investigator on the New Horizons mission, said: “It sounds like science fiction but it is not. “Three months from today, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft will make the first exploration of the Pluto system, the Kuiper Belt and the farthest shore of exploration ever reached by humankind.” New Horizons was launched in 2006 and powered by plutonium, Mr Stern added: “Nothing like this has been done in a quarter of a century and nothing like NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft has sent
