Cross-Country Ski Trails to Explore at Night

Mark your calendar for a couple of enchanting evenings out on the cross-country ski trails in northeastern Wisconsin that will be lit by candlelight. OCONTO FALLS -- The Machickanee Cross Country Ski Club is hosting a pair of night XC outings on the Machickanee Ski Trails. The first event will be Saturday, Jan. 15, with the second one on Saturday, Feb. 12. The Machickanee Cross-Country Ski Trails lead through a series of forest types, including red pine plantations, coniferous swamps, oak ridges, and birch and aspen stands. They undulate through topography ranging from creek bottoms to ridge tops. Numerous hills and curves of various slopes and lengths make this course a challenge for the intermediate to advanced skiers. The trails also include a beginner’s loop that can be enjoyed by skiers of all ability levels. User donation helps the club members maintain and develop these trails. Suggested daily donation is $5 for adults, $1 for children. Check out their website at Skimachickanee.org for suggested donations for the season. There’s a cashbox at the trailhead, located at 6625 Timberline Rd., Abrams. MARINETTE -- The Wisconsin DNR is hosting a candlelight ski and hike on Saturday, Feb. 12 at the Gov. Thompson State Park. Hours are 6-9 p.m. The park and trails will be lit by more than 800 candle luminaries and accented with ice sculptures. Skiers can take an easy 1-mile loop candlelit trail groomed for both classic (diagonal striding) and skate skiing as it weaves through the woods. Non-skiers are welcome to hike another 1-mile candlelit trail with scenic views over Woods Lake. Hikers, snowshoers and pets are not allowed on the ski trail, but are welcome on the hiking trail.

Warming fires and hot chocolate will be available for everyone in the Woods Lake Shelter. Vehicle admission (park sticker) is required and can be purchased at the park office the day of the event. Trails start at the Woods Lake picnic area and shelter.
