Morning:
Explore a local trail, such as the Holmboe Conifer Forest. Take a hike through the peaceful trails where you’ll be amongst towering old-growth trees and lush greenery. Or, walk the paved trail along Boom Lake at Hodag Park for great water views.
Afternoon:
Visit Downtown Rhinelander on Brown Street and check out the unique local shops. Pick out a Rhinelander or Hodag souvenir to take home with you! Enjoy lunch or dinner at a downtown dining establishment while you’re there.
Evening:
Hodag Hunt: Get your picture taken with the world’s largest Hodag Statue, located at the Rhinelander Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center. If you want to see more hodags, go on the hodag scavenger hunt around town to find more statues, murals, carvings and more.

Hodag Park Concert Series
Stop by the Hodag Park Amphitheater for the summer concert series! Concerts are traditionally held on evenings throughout the summer months, at no cost. Food and drink options are typically available from area food trucks and vendors during the concerts. Visit the Hodag Park Concert Series Facebook page for the concert schedule.
Concerts on the Riverwalk
Riverwalk concerts feature a variety of musical groups and genres, from bands to jazz groups and more. Riverwalk concerts are held at the bandshell near Trig’s weekly during the summer and there is no cost to attend.

Hodag Country Festival
Held in Rhinelander since 1978, Hodag Country Fest is an annual music festival that features popular country music performers every July. Past performances have included everyone from Darius Rucker and Eric Church to Loretta Lynn and Willie Nelson. Ticket prices vary- check their website for more details.
Hodag Heritage Festival
Celebrate the legendary creature that has captivated our community for generations at the one-of-a-kind Hodag Heritage Festival! Whether you’re a long-time Hodag fan or just discovering this mythical beast, the festival offers something for everyone. Live music takes place throughout the day along with historical speakers, performances, tours, Hodag vendors, and much more. Live music can also be found at larger community events and downtown celebrations throughout the year.

The Hodag
Head to Rhinelander and you’ll find the home of a true Northwoods legend: the Hodag.
The first person to spot the Hodag was likely a lumberjack. In the 1800s, Rhinelander was a pioneer lumber town and loggers who worked the Northwoods told stories of a monster roaming the forests. Legend had it that this “Hodag” was the reincarnated spirit of the sturdy, hardworking oxen that dragged logs from the forest. The Hodag had the head of a frog, the grinning face of a giant elephant, thick, short legs set off by huge claws, the back of a dinosaur and a long tail with spears at the end. The Hodag also had green eyes, huge fangs and two horns sprouting from its temples.
However, the Hodag story might even predate the Northwoods logging days. Some historians have suggested that the Hodag strongly resembles pictographs found near Lake Superior that depict Mishipeshu, the Ojibwe water panther.
The Hodag story went nationwide in 1893 thanks to a Northwoods lumberman and resort owner named Eugene “Gene” Shepard. Shepard was the first to circulate reports of the Hodag, including photographic evidence of the beast. As the story goes, a group of local men used hunting dogs, rifles and squirt guns loaded with “poison water” to attack the Hodag without success before using dynamite to successfully kill the fearsome creature.
Three years later, Shepard came back with an even bigger claim—he said he had captured a live Hodag (with the help of some bear wrestlers and a healthy dose of chloroform). He took the captured beast on tour throughout
the state, including a stop at the Oneida County Fair where attendees paid to see the Hodag in person. In darkened tents, amazed onlookers heard the Hodag growl and even saw the creature move.
The story of the Hodag spread quickly into national newspapers. As word spread, a group of scientists from the Smithsonian Institution planned an expedition to Rhinelander to investigate. It was only then that Shepard admitted the Hodag—or at least his version—was a hoax, a creature made of wood and oxen leather that only moved with the help of wires.
So, is that the end of the story?
Maybe not. For decades, golfers around Rhinelander have blamed the Hodag for disappearing golf balls, and anglers have claimed the beast often snatches trophy catches right off their lines.
Today, the Hodag has become the official symbol of Rhinelander–it’s even the mascot for the local high school–and can be seen pretty much anywhere visitors go in Rhinelander. Learn all about this fascinating creature and plan your trip to Hodag Country today!

With miles of trails and hundreds of lakes, Rhinelander is the perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts, with countless ways to enjoy the outdoors across every season. The area offers endless opportunities for exploration, adventure and relaxation alike.
ON LAND
Spring, Summer and Fall
The Oneida County Forest land includes over 80,000 acres and features many trails for various activities. Oneida County is also part of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, spanning over 1.5 million acres of the Northwoods with 800 miles of trails. Rhinelander is home to several public parks in town, including Hodag Park and Pioneer Park, where you can find excellent walking paths, recreational sports courts, great water views and sandy beach areas.
The Northwoods also has many trails for ATV/UTVing. Go on a scenic ride on the Enterprise Trail System or the Little Rice Trail. These trails connect to other trail systems in neighboring counties for more miles of fun. Most city streets and county roads in the area are open to ATV and UTV use.
When it comes to hiking and biking, Rhinelander’s scenic parks and trails provide a great blend of terrains and views for everyone, from beginners to seasoned trailblazers. There are ample opportunities for bikers in the Rhinelander area to enjoy options of single and double track trails. You can find trails for mountain biking or road biking, with a variety of trails ranging in distance, paved or unpaved surfaces, and varying difficulty. Popular trails such as the Bearskin State Trail, Mud Lake Trail System, or C.A.V.O.C. Trails lead you through lush forests or alongside beautiful waterways, giving you a taste of the Rhinelander area’s natural beauty.
The abundant public land is also a great place for hunting, whether it be white-tailed deer, turkey, game birds or bear.
Winter
Rhinelander averages 81.6” of snowfall per year. Winter in Rhinelander is equally as thrilling, as it transforms into a winter sports hotspot with miles of well-maintained trails for various activities. The snow-covered Northwoods and frozen lakes are a wonderland for those seeking winter fun and adventure, with options for all skill levels.
Enjoy the fresh snowfalls by going snowmobiling on more than 1,000 miles of groomed trails in Oneida County. These trails connect with thousands more miles of trails throughout the Northwoods and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Take in the Northwoods’ winter landscapes by cross country skiing or snowshoeing through the woods on one of the many groomed trails. Popular trails for winter activities include C.A.V.O.C. Trails, Cassian County Two-Way Trail and Rhinelander Community Ski Trails.
ON WATER
With approximately 1,100 lakes in Oneida County, there are neverending possibilities for fun on the water! In the warmer months, Rhinelander’s lakes are a popular spot for fishing, boating, swimming and paddling. Anglers of all ages and experience levels can find prized fishing spots in the area’s many lakes and rivers. Choose your perfect fishing spot from a variety of small secluded lakes to extensive flowages where you can find everything from panfish to musky. In the winter months, brave the cold and try your luck at ice fishing. Popular lakes for year-round fishing include Boom Lake, Lake George or Lake Julia.
Enjoy the summer relaxing by boating among the picturesque waters. Visit a quiet lake, cruise the sizeable Boom Lake chain or explore the water by paddling the scenic waterways. The Pelican and Wisconsin Rivers surrounding Rhinelander are great options for paddling, offering another option to take in the stunning views and abundant wildlife of the Northwoods. Whether it be kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding or canoeing, there are plenty of options for paddling fun in Rhinelander.
You can also find several excellent swimming beaches in the Rhinelander area to cool off in the summer. Several options include Buck Lake, Hodag Park and Hanson Lake.

Athletics & Sports
Rhinelander is home to state-of-the art athletic facilities, silent sport trails, scenic golf courses and more. Whether you are traveling for sporting events or seeking community activities, Rhinelander’s recreational amenities have lots to offer.
The Hodag Dome is the largest air-supported high school dome in the nation, with over 128,000 square feet of space for use by students, teams, community members and visitors. At the Dome, you can find a full-size football field and two softball fields, a soccer pitch, community walking space, pickleball/tennis courts, batting cages, golf simulators and other sports courts. Membership is available for community walking hours, open turf times, and leagues at the Dome. The Dome is available for rental and can host a variety of activities and events including tournaments, concerts, meetings, fundraisers and more.
The YMCA of the Northwoods offers health and fitness opportunities for all ages, including adults. Join a sport league or take a fitness class. Youth can partake in competitive or noncompetitive sport leagues, lessons and camps.
Also located in Rhinelander is the Rhinelander Ice Arena, offering a full-size 82x200 foot NHL hockey rink. The Ice Arena holds numerous events, games and tournaments for both hockey and figure skating during the winter months. Ice-related community events and workshops are also offered.
The Hodag Sports Club has two range locations and offers shooting ranges for shotgun, archery, pistol and rifle. With over 1,400 acres between both locations, you can find opportunities for trap and skeet shooting, sporting clays, archery targets, numerous bays and more. The Sports Club also has several shooting teams and league events throughout the year. Or, play a round of golf at the Northwood Golf Club and take in the beautiful scenery. This 18-hole course has a full clubhouse and holds regular leagues, teaching opportunities and social events.
Don’t forget about the wide variety of outdoor venues and events. Visit groomed trails for cross country skiing, snowshoeing, mountain biking, fat tire biking, hiking and more. From dog sled races to tournaments, you can enjoy outdoor sports year-round.
