WE LOVE IT WHEN A PLAN COMES TOGETHER!

L

ast year FCA received a gift that has kept on giving—our strategic plan—and several key goals in the plan came to fruition during the 2014 – 2015 season. In line with our vision to create buzz; enhance the quality of life of Fairbanksans; engage in risk-taking and develop a younger audience; and build community, FCA brought on a new ticketing system, garnered increased coverage in local media, and reached beyond the concert hall with successful engagement projects and great programming. Our plan has led to success with our budget goals. We met our earned income goal for the season, increased our investment portfolio, gained new contributors, and had several longtime supporters increase their giving. Most important: This has meant an expanding audience, connecting more people than ever to the arts, 13% more than last year.

OUR

Fairbanks—oh how Fairbanksans showed us how much they wanted to See it. Feel it. Share it. We made a commitment to allow patrons to engage more with our presentations. In our effort to provide a meaningful cultural experience we provided a luau in conjunction with our Hawaiian slack key guitar artists, a series of talks for our presentation of Split Knuckle Theatre’s Endurance, installed a space ship on the roof of the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner in advance of the Intergalactic Nemesis, offered opportunities to jam with our percussion quartet TorQ, and created the Community Dance Team to enliven BodyVox. The result—five shows exceeded budget!

VISION

GOAL to give community members the experience of creation, the opportunity to explore the medium of the artists we bring and to contribute to a place that is vibrant and exciting to live in.

WHICH SHOW DID YOU LIKE THE BEST? Ramsey Lewis and John Pizzarelli After reviewing audience surveys (rating 1 to 5; with 1 as low and 5 as the top of the scale) we assessed the avg rating at concerts was 4.8 with Lyle Lovett, Split Knuckle Theater, exceeding that number. Lewis Pizzarelli got the highest rating with Lyle closely following. (both over 4.9)

Without the generosity of individual contributors we new diverse audiences as shows, military and socia initiatives. The Shackleton the Community Dance Tea performances and works and imagination of the wo support allowed us to kee in 15,000 show attendees outreach programs, and 6 programs.

PARTNERSHIPS

P

artnerships are vital to FCA, exponentially expanding our ability to serve our community. We are honored to have many relationships with other entities, organizations, businesses and individuals who work with us to achieve our goals. This year, we partnered with Theater UAF and University faculty to make November “Shackleton leadership month” in Fairbanks. Courtland Weaver with the North Star Ballet hosted and taught

the Community Dance Team moves to participate in flash mob performances throughout Fairbanks. These community partnerships have an enduring impact. The talks facilitated conversations about further partnerships with the University of Alaska Fairbanks and North Star Ballet for this year’s shows. More collaborations? We couldn’t be more pleased. The outcome? Big wins for all concerned. Together we can all achieve more while being more efficient.

“I’m not sure who makes it all possible for free tickets to be offered to military families by the ASYMCA, but over the last 3 years, we’ve had the opportunity to expose our children to so many genres of music because of that generosity. Those were opportunities we never would have been able to afford to offer to our children otherwise, specifically our 8 year old daughter who has such a passion for music. To see her filled with such joy at each concert brings me to tears. I’m so deeply thankful, and I wanted to make sure I told you so.” (Brooke Hall)

YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN YOU START SOMETHING WHERE IT MIGHT LEAD

I

n some untraditional ways for an organization that promotes performing artists, FCA has started some projects which have had unexpected lasting impact on the community. In 2008 FCA started Pass the Hat with little idea of the impact it would have in Fairbanks. After two very successful years, the program was moved to the North Star Community Foundation where it continues to serve as a matching program for community projects. This year, the West Valley High School class of 2015 raised $15,000 for the Fairbanks Youth Advocates teen shelter The Door. With another match, they are working on $20,000!

Local artist Jamelle Duszynski created the space ship and a representation of Shackleton’s ship— both now publicly on display. The space ship has a permanent home at the Fairbanks Children’s Museum, the Endurance display has gone to the school district’s library services – installed most recently at Randy Smith Middle School as part of a teaching module. Our partnerships are having impacts throughout the community. We are seeing the results of building community in untraditional ways. We are garnering new audiences and having greater impact. FCA is providing buzz and Fairbanks truly does want to See it. Feel it. Share it.

OUTREACH “We were able to attend an incredible school performance today by Black Violin. They really made a great impression on the auditorium full of students, and they sent the kids out with some good rules to live by. 1) Think outside the box and open your minds to new possibilities. 2) Out-work everyone else to become the best at what you are passionate about. 3) Always reach for the stars.” (Joe Cox, 5th grade teacher, Wood River)

FINANCIAL POSITION FCA has remained successful through strong partnerships, tight budgeting, conservative fiscal management, adaptation to local financial conditions, and consistent growth in our subscription base.

Fairbanks Concert Association welcomed 9 guest artists and hosted 6,796 Attendees during the 2014/2015 season. Average house count = 755

With reduced ticket prices and increased attendance we were able to exceed projected earned income.
