I stumbled upon Kelli Shaw’s profile for Walnut & Pine Design and thought, “This can’t be a real house.” Not only was it a real house, but it was her house she designed. Not only that, but it also featured her equally amazing vacation rental in Custer, Pine Palace. Not only that, but you can hire her to help make your house or space just as creative. “When I was a kid, we would take a lot of family trips to ski towns, and my favorite places to go were the ones with lofts or something cool about the house,” said Kelli Shaw, owner of Walnut & Pine Design. (Read more on Walnut & Pine on page 34.) So when Shaw and her partner, Josh, stumbled upon a pine cabin just minutes from Custer, one of their favorite towns, she knew that experience was exactly what she wanted to create for travelers. Shaw explained, “I think adults like that stuff—something different. It kind of enhances your vacation”

But a specialty rental property didn’t come without complications. When Shaw first saw the listing for the cabin, she and Josh were just leaving for a trip to Michigan. She put it out of her mind, and when they returned, the house was already on a contract. “I knew it would be after two days or whatever,” she explained. After some encouragement from her sister, she put in a backup offer on the cabin. Ten minutes later, Shaw got a call telling her the cabin was hers.
With the keys in hand, she and Josh began working on creating the Pine Palace. Come fall of 2020, they began renting it as an Airbnb. Between the loft bedroom, downstairs bedroom, and sleeper sofa, the rental sleeps five and has two bathrooms. “We added some different elements,” said Shaw. “The wood plays into that Scandinavian design that I already like so much.” The cabin was a fairly new construction, so it didn’t need too much done to it.

“The shell was there,” she expanded. “That house just needed a lot of little things done to it like the painting and the décor.”

One of the biggest changes in the main living space was switching out a library ladder for swiveling stairs.
“[You can use] something that you don’t want to live with every day in your everyday house, but in an Airbnb, you can theme it,” she said. “That’s where people want to stay.”
“I was thinking of changing out linens and stuff coming up and down a ladder,” explained Shaw of the decision. “[The stairs are] super small, and you can face those however you want.”
From wall to ceiling, the majority of the Pine Palace is made of pine. To soften the place up and make it feel more cozy, Shaw added some plants and Scandinavianinfluenced furniture.

“I don’t think a lot of people spend a lot of time watching TV on their vacation, so I think they like that gathering space upstairs where it’s all wood and cozy and warm.”
“That’s why I loved that house in the first place is all that wood,” she said. And with the wood and the rest of the décor throughout the home, it makes for a cozy place to sit and spend time together. “We keep getting comments about the vibe of the place,” said Shaw. “That’s my favorite compliment.” She says she’s seen plenty of evidence of groups hanging out together, playing games, and just enjoying company in the main living space. But if they need a break from the home, Shaw has plenty to say. “For our Airbnb, I’m always giving recommendations,” she said. “It’s super important to me that you don’t come here and have nothing to do.” Here are a few places she recommends trying: The Custer Wolf, Skogen Kitchen, and The Custer Beacon. “I think where we live is so awesome,” said Shaw. “For me, part of the reason I’m drawn to Airbnbs is that I love the Black Hills.”

Working her first job at a hardware store, teenage Chelsey Preuss staged décor and gift shelves.
“Customers at the time would compliment my work, and my boss encouraged me to look into interior design as a career choice,” said Preuss with a laugh. “But I was persistent with wanting to help animals in some way.” Eventually, she gave in and looked up interior design. She later, with a degree in that same field, found her true passion in kitchen and bath design.

She worked for reputable firms for six years in Minnesota before she came to Sioux Falls to do what she wanted most. “I’m such a dreamer with a lot of ambition who loves to live by my own rules, so entrepreneurial life is my ultimate dream,” explained Preuss. Fueled by that entrepreneurial spirit at 25, she started her own design business: Chelsey Home.
Custom. Curated. Chelsey. Chelsey Home offers kitchen and bath design, vacation rental design, and custom cabinetry. She explained, “It’s so much deeper than selecting finishes and all about how they function as well as how the space functions.” Preuss puts together layouts, renderings, and design concepts for clients’ spaces. “I essentially make a solid foundation for a design so that clients can achieve it at their own pace and budget,” said Preuss. She says she also shares free information on how to implement mindfulness into homes and life through her online design studio. This month, Preuss will be working on predesigned rooms and guides for Airbnb setups.

AROUND THE WORLD Preuss loves finding pieces worldwide to use in her home. In the living room, there is a pouf that she picked up while in Morocco. Photos in the space were also taken there. In the three-season room, the hanging chair was handmade in Nicaragua. Her favorite place to pick up authentic mid-century furniture in the states, though, is Facebook Marketplace.

Welcoming Wanderers Preuss embraces her favorite traits with her business tagline that reads, “mindful interiors for the life well traveled.” When she bought her first house in central Sioux Falls, she had that idea in mind as she transformed it into a rental. “I transformed the whole upper level into an Airbnb. I knew that I’d always wanted a house to be able to do something like this,” said Preuss. When she first moved in, she was only renting out a private room, and the living space was shared with her. “I wanted to celebrate my achievement with owning my first home with all of them and get their feedback as some stayed in the guest room from out of town,” she said. With help of friends and family, she painted, remodeled the three-season room ceiling, and found second-hand furniture. “The house was built in 1954 and has a vintage charm and details that you won’t find in a newer home, but has been updated for modern living,” she explained. After about a year, she opened the entire top floor as a private Airbnb and moved into the lower level.

“I added unique, worldly, and vintage pieces to tell a story and encourage conversation,” she said.
“[Meraki] is a word that modern Greeks often use to describe doing something with soul, creativity, or love—when you put ‘something of yourself ’ into what you’re doing, whatever it may be,” she explained.
Her influences can be seen in each room, mixing with the mid-century modern design and taking the form of different countries.
Remnants of her travels can be found throughout her home.

THE APRICATE COLLECTION Check out Preuss’ online shop where she sells vintage pieces. In Japanese, apricate means to bask in the sun, and her goal is to “bring these lost pieces to light and encourage sustainability.”
The second bedroom embodies Japanese design and culture with a bed that sits close to the ground, pulling in the idea of staying grounded. And while the living room leans into the Moroccan style, the three-season room strays to be more “Scandiboho.” All of these styles can be found mixed throughout, as well. “I think as an interior designer, I just love people enjoying what I’ve created and being able to create with no limits,” said Preuss. “It’s different than designing for a client.”

But she says it’s not necessarily a good or bad thing, adding: “They’re both rewarding in their own way, but to be able to make something out of nothing and just be able to share that with people is my favorite thing.”

“For me, it’s really important for my mental space how my external space looks,” said Kelli Shaw, owner of Walnut & Pine Design. Over the last decade, while continuing her day job as a pharmacist, Shaw realized her passion for interior design and implemented her tastes into her home. When she shared her projects with people, they wanted to see what she could do in their spaces. “I was saying no for a long time, seven to eight years,” said Shaw. “I had myself into a different box.” Finally, after some encouragement from her partner, Josh, she agreed to look into her passion.

“When I started, I was doing more textbook mid-century,” said Shaw, explaining that she used Better Homes and Gardens for inspiration.
“I don’t like when there’s too much stuff in my visual line,” said Shaw. “It distracts me.”
She pulls from that style mostly to satisfy her vision of clean lines and shapes. Her Rapid City home, which she refers to as Arrowhead, has evidence of her mid-century influences in many ways.
The things that fit best into her personal designs are plants and a Scandinavian aesthetic, bringing in plenty of walnut and pine.
Despite her affinity for orderly things and few items, Shaw says she wouldn’t consider herself a minimalist.

“Nature’s a huge part of all of my stuff for sure,” she said. “You’re never going to outcompete nature, but you can bring it inside and make it comfortable.”

Giving nature a run for its money, Shaw admits that last time she counted she clocked in 67 plants in her home. Some people don’t know what to do with their homes, plants or no plants. “Everyone gets these houses, they put their stuff in it, and they don’t really know what to do next,” explained Shaw. “If I can help with that, that’s great with me.” So from a 10-year-old’s bedroom to a yoga studio and more, Shaw has had the opportunity to design many different spaces.

“My favorite spaces are Airbnbs or an income property of some sort,” said Shaw. “The reason I like those so much is that they are not real life so you can get a little funky with it.” The couple own an Airbnb in Custer, the Pine Palace, a space where the Scandinavian aesthetic shines bright. (Read more on page 14.) With both the Pine Palace and another Airbnb they are currently working on, Shaw wants the atmosphere to be fun and exciting. She says she already has plans in her head for her next three rental projects.

A Rough Start Shaw laughed as she explained that her home was “so ugly” when she purchased it, but the floating staircase was too good to resist at its price. She got the house at a good deal. She then revived the overgrown yard, did lots of painting, and made it her own.
“My MO seems to be buy really ugly houses, get good deals on them, and then try to make them nice. Other people don’t like them, but I love them.”
But Airbnbs are not the only place where she wants something unique and noteworthy. Shaw just completed a retro mural that transformed the guest bedroom she once dreaded being in into a space she can’t wait to spend time in. “The reason I did that mural is because I got this Peloton [bike], and I wanted to make myself work out,” she explained with a laugh.

No matter the motivation, she loves making rooms into places where people want to be. “You already own the space and bought the space, you might as well make it really cool,” she said. While she enjoys her day job, Shaw says she’s having a blast with her design passion, and she’s up for any challenge.

Instructor Madeline Porter chatted with the 605 team as we were served homemade Miso Soup during our Hands-On Sushi class. It was our introduction to Plum’s Cooking School, which hosts a variety of classroom experiences at Plum’s Cooking Company by Simply Perfect in downtown Sioux Falls. “I’m originally from Singapore. It’s kind of the food capital of the world, we get all kinds of cuisine over there,” she explained. In the wintertime Porter says she typically loves to travel for three months all over Asia to try cuisine and bring it back to Plum’s kitchen. “Plum’s has been a great platform for me because I love to create and to experiment with food, and this is a place where I can share with people what I love,” she said.
The menu lineup for the evening was a Futomaki Roll (Big Roll), Roll), an Inside Out Roll (Caterpillar Roll), Roll), Tamago Nigiri (Egg), (Egg), and Salmon Nigiri. Nigiri. Knowing the craft it takes to present sushi, I was nervous, but luckily Christin Vander Pol, Pol, marketing manager of Plum’s Cooking Company, was close by with red or white wine.

As Porter came around helping us not fail (“There you go, look how pretty”), Vander Pol spoke of the wide range of classes. “The other ones that sell out really well are date night classes,” she said. “Those range in a variety, like Italian with pasta making. A lot are demonstrations, and this is one of the only handson classes.” Another hands-on experience includes the summertime Kids Camp, Camp, which is a week of experimenting in the kitchen with professionals. “The kids are hands-on and they’re so good and are so well trained by the end,” said Porter. “They come every day for a whole week and day one they have different cuisine from the world, so you can have Mexican, Asian, French. They have a competition at the end of the fifth day.” What is so unique and special about the courses is the up-close time with talented cooks. “It’s so nice to have a collaborative space for people to get to know the local chefs and instructors and pick their brains a little bit,” said Vander Pol. Even Porter becomes a fan of different chefs in the area from meeting them in the kitchen.

“Emily Wilson has vegan, vegetarianstyle cooking,” she said. “Her cooking is very healthy and keeps the temperature of dishes where it retains all of the nutrients. She’s very put together and creative. I really enjoyed her.” Classes are for anyone, including those who are interested in cooking, those who want to learn new recipes, and those who are just curious and love food. My rolls, for example, looked horrendous, but Porter didn’t let me quit, and gave us tips to finish each dish to completion. And the end results were delicious, too. 605 605’s ’s Tyson Schultz was so excited with his progress that he told co-workers who missed the evening how great his rolls turned out the next day.

Vander Pol did note that classes do sell out quickly, and warned to sign up as soon as you can to make them—especially Porter’s. “I don’t know what to say, they love my food,” laughed Porter. “We just had our Thai class last week, too, and it turned out so well.” There are also classes that include products directly from Plum’s, like Olivelle oil classes, classes, Sous Vide classes, classes, and Riedel wine tasting classes. classes.

When Katie Krantz and her husband, Rodney, purchased the 210 Phillips building in downtown Sioux Falls with Brad and Christal Dietzenbach in August of 2019, they were thinking of office expansion.
“We purchased the building for future growth of our architectural business, VanDeWalle Architects. If the opportunity was there, it’s right next door to our existing location and we’re maxed out at our current location,” said Katie. “The loft was just an added bonus to that.” The 1,400-square-foot loft had formerly been the primary residence of the art gallery owner below, and the 210 Phillips, LLC team hoped to find a tenant. “Our goal was to find a longer-lease tenant with the idea to eventually rent it out down the road,” she said. After there weren’t any bites with the loft’s original state, Katie says they decided to take the leap and make renovations to launch a shortterm rental dubbed The Loft on Phillips. Construction began in February 2020. “That month we decided to go forward with plans to remodel, and then of course COVID-19 hit in March,” she continued. “But we were into it, and we kept going.” One of the biggest obstacles was moving the entrance since the former owner’s entrance was directly inside of the gallery.

“In order to get into the loft, you had to go into the gallery and up the stairs, so the first thing we had to do to rent it out was to get access directly to the exterior,” explained Katie. They started with reconfiguring the main floor bedroom and walk-in closet, turning the walk-in into a mudroom and adding a new staircase on the north side with direct access. “We do still have a staircase connected to the gallery, but we needed to keep that for building code, so it will always be there for emergencies,” she said.

For the rest of the inside, they did what Katie describes as mostly a cosmetic remodel. “We put in new flooring, painted the cabinets, gutted one of the bathrooms, and put in a tile shower with a floating vanity,” she said. “Also, we modified some of the closet spaces. With a shortterm rental you don’t need as much closet space.”
“The kitchen is fully stocked,” she said. “We have extra folding chairs, extra bedding pillows, things like that.”
The rental can sleep up to six with one king-size bed on the upper level, a queen-size bed on the main level, and a queen sofa hide-a-bed. Katie describes the décor as Scandinavian-modern, and says The Loft also has plenty of amenities.
One of the best features is the location along Phillips Avenue. The private and secure living space is near a variety of shopping, groceries, restaurants, and attractions downtown.

“We’re within walking distance of anything downtown, whether they’re coming here for a concert at the Washington Pavilion or outdoor events this summer, or going to see [Falls Park]. I think we’re in the best location in the city,” said Katie.

And The Loft has one of the best views of the city, with a rooftop patio with over 1,500 square feet of entertainment space. This includes a sound system, two outdoor gas firepits, a gas barbecue grill, a dining table, and patio furniture that seats 10 people. “On the rooftop patio we also put in string lights on a timer so it creates a nice ambiance at night,” described Katie.

The outdoor space can host up to 40 people and has been used for reunions, corporate events, birthday parties, and weddings. “We have quite a few wedding rentals where the bride and their friends will come in on a Friday night, and the bride will stay there with her bridal party and get ready there the next day,” she said. “Then the couple will stay there on the wedding night.”

While Katie says it’s fun to sit along the 50-foot railing on Phillips Avenue to watch the hustle and bustle of Sioux Falls, guests can simply switch sides for a more private experience. “If you sit on the backside of the patio closer to the loft area, it all goes away and you feel like you’re in a different space,” she said. Even the owners themselves have stayed at The Loft just to relax. “It’s just a fun little getaway for a night to not deal with the stress in our own house.”

Cameron Stalheim HANG OUT WITH

n 2020, artist Cameron Stalheim bought a house for the first time. “I never thought that I’d even be able to buy a house,” he explained. “I’m an artist, and I work in the service industry.” He’d been looking for a while when he stumbled upon an old home near downtown Sioux Falls. Only six hours after the house hit the market, he made an offer. The homeowner accepted the offer.

“As an artist, I get rejected all the time,” said Stalheim. “Being accepted was very scary. Now I had to actually go through with this house.” Soon after moving in, he completed a renovation, changing everything from the floors, walls, and fixtures to the shelves, furniture, and accents. To complete his space, he implemented many thrifted pieces and items he redid himself.

On March 10, former Miss Art World Kathrine J. Cooksey bestowed her crown and the title of Miss Art World South Dakota upon Lockheart.

People might know me from… my life-sized oil paintings of women who look like a cross between Betty Crocker and Bettie Page from my Feminine Attempts series. These six- to seven-foottall canvases show powerful women wearing unbelievable footwear in domestic spaces. I have exhibited these paintings in Sioux Falls, Brookings, Vermillion, and many other galleries in the Midwest.

Miss Art World Cooksey. She’s a conceptual artist from the Los Angeles area who specializes in performance art. Her artwork is extremely inspiring because it uplifts women, and I strive to empower others through my art, too.

The best part of my job is… I get to communicate and connect
with others through my art. Painting is a physical process, and it is incredibly rewarding to create a physical work of art that others can enjoy. I begin each painting by sketching and taking photographs to plot out my composition. Then, I build a custom stretcher and gesso the canvas. I draw on the canvas first to assure that my composition will be successful, and then I spend weeks and months applying layers and layers of paint. Each step is challenging, but it’s worth the effort to make a painting that someone else can connect with and appreciate.

My favorite project right now is… my series of
Brodalisque paintings, which are portraits of lounging “bros” in man caves. The “Brodalisque” is a bro who reenacts the passivity of odalisques from 19th century Orientalist art. My paintings challenge the typical objectifying representations of women from art history, but they’re also so absurd that they make me laugh.
My art style is inspired by… historic, academic-
style painting. Women were traditionally prohibited from learning how to become artists in Europe and the United States, and I want to correct that error. I purposefully paint in a style that looks like my art belongs in a museum because art institutions do not have enough women artists in their collections. I am also inspired by artists such as Artemisia Gentileschi, Mary Cassatt, and Frida Kahlo because they overcame many obstacles to become artists, and their paintings are still impactful.

The dress for Miss Art World was inspired by… the historic
relationship between artists and models. I designed the printed pattern for the dress, which is made up of dinosaur toys acting like they are artists and models. I use dinosaurs as an analogy in my art because it feels like women have been fighting for equal rights since the dawn of time.

What was once just a meat counter has expanded into so much more. And one of the newest additions is Look’s Beer Company at the back of the market. “We started brewing in October of 2019, and we poured our first beers November 5 of 2019,” said head brewer Chad McKinney.
The artwork, designed by creative director Les Cotton, found on cans from the brewery echo a new tagline that McKinney says they are playing with: “Weird. Fun. Beer.” McKinney says his favorite beers to brew are quick, easy-to-drink ales and “hoppy beers.”
But the lengthy history doesn’t dictate the easy-going nature of the brewery.
And word about Look’s Beer Company has gotten around.
“We don’t take it too seriously,” said McKinney. “We try to put out the best product that we can, but the artwork is supposed to be fun and that’s a good snapshot of what our attitude is.”
In June 2020, Guy Fieri visited Look’s Marketplace in south Sioux Falls to film Savory Meat and a Little Sweet, an episode of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. The episode aired on January 29.
Ever since that episode aired, McKinney says that he has struggled to keep up with the new-found attention behind the bar. While the taproom has enough room for 19 beers on tap, there has been closer to 10 as McKinney and his workers scramble to keep up with the demand. “It’s family friendly, nice and loud, and just a fun place to hang out,” said McKinney. As the weather improves, McKinney says he hopes to host events on the patio located just outside the taproom.

“We literally had to save our money little by little by little,” she said. And all of their hard work paid off. “With a lot of help, we made it happen for her,” said Harianys. When the De Jesus pair opened the doors of La India Taina Puerto Rican Restaurant on March 3, more people than they could have imagined flooded in.
Another starter option that bridges into seafood is Pastelillo de Camarones, turnovers stuffed with shrimp. At La India Taina, the drink menu has a few tropical choices. One of the most popular is Parcha, passion fruit juice. Guava Piña, guava pineapple juice, and Agua De Avena, oat milk water, are not far behind. “Piña Colada has been selling a lot, too,” explained Harianys. “Everybody loves Piña Colada.”
As guests took a seat at the restaurant for the first time, they had a choice of seven appetizers.
But no matter what a guest orders, Harianys says that quality is much more important to her and her mother than speed.
One of them is the Alcapurria de Yuca con Carne Molida o Jueyes, which is homemade green plantain dough with ground beef or crab.
“We like to make sure all the flavor is there and all the taste is there, so we don’t want to give you anything that is just already made,” she said.

One of the dishes that Harianys expects to become a favorite is Mofongo, mashed plantain that is fried and served with a special sauce and one of four meats. “The food is always going to be fresh. It’s all about patience. It might take a little longer, but it’s definitely going to be worth it,” she added. Another entree that may give mofongo a run for its money is Arroz con Gandules, Pernil y Ensalada de Papa o Ensalada de Coditos. This translates to rice with pigeon peas, roasted pork, and potato salad or elbow salad. “A lot of people love Pernil because of the pig skin,” said Harianys. “The way we make it is really crunchy and delicious, so a lot of people love that part.” That opening day was a lot for the first-time business owners to handle, to say the least.

“The kitchen, this was their first time actually working together,” Harianys explained. “They are still learning their pace. There was a lot of hold time on their food.” For the first couple days, the restaurant had to close early due to food supply shortages and more customers than the De Jesus duo planned for. But you live and you learn. “There’s more to learn every day,” said Harianys. A few days after opening, she said, “For it being the third day, we have progressed so much just in three days.” But both Harianys and Johanna are putting in as much effort as they can to make the restaurant everything they dream it to be.
One of the biggest featured artworks is a transportable mural of parrots, the Puerto Rican flag, and more painted by David Saldana-Rico.

This month, Sinclair said, Montgomery’s will celebrate that 133year anniversary by holding an anniversary sale at all locations: Sioux Falls, Madison, and Watertown. And it won’t be long until the company opens a new store located in Aberdeen: Montgomery’s Design Studio. Sinclair shared with 605 his journey to becoming president, where he likes to stop for munchies, and which mistake people should avoid when purchasing furniture.

You have to earn the right to work in the family business, it’s not given. That means earn a degree and go work for someone else first, then you can work here. After I did that, I wanted to come back to South Dakota to raise my family and work here, and I’ve been president of Montgomery’s since 2013.
There are huge differences in the quality of furniture, so buying furniture that looks good but is inexpensive is a common mistake. You will spend less, but you may have to replace it sooner than you’d like.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS? Doing the same thing—déjà vu, Groundhog Day. I love what I’m doing and see no need to change.
WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO GO FOR A BITE?
