“These units make for a stunning storefront to house a cosmetology studio, fitness instruction, Realtor “ office for meet ‘n’ greets with clients. The options are endless. Jacob Bunde

People might know me from…

the gym. I have been a member of many local fitness clubs, have competed in several sports, and am a tall guy. A 6’7” guy stands out.

My favorite way to spend leisure time is…

hunting. It’s a year round event for me. I enjoy preparing for the season by maintaining the land, cultivating food plots, and checking game cameras. My daughter has grown into being my helper, so we go out, fill the grain feeders, replace the SD cards, etc. We enjoy shed hunting in the spring so much so that our family dog is conditioned to find antlers. I just really enjoy being outdoors, taking in nature.

The best part of my Job Is...

getting my hands dirty. I’m able to complete the finishing details of all our builds, and it’s the most gratifying to see it all come together.

My favorite design elements to implement are...

minimalist, modern touches. I am drawn to industrial textures, such as concrete, metal, and wood. You’ll find those incorporated in all my designs.

One build takes roughly…

two weeks to complete once materials are on site. As with most everyone else, our timeline is impacted greatly by the supply chain. I’ve been strategic in connecting with vendors that have been able to commit and expect this to remain a dynamic part of the process.

The housing shortage or the desire to minimize one’s materialistic lifestyle both contribute to the interest in tiny living. “ “ Jacob Bunde

What I loved about putting together Outpost was…

creating something new with my wife. We compliment each other on strengths, so this was really a fun way to do something together.

Something we’re doing with our business right now that I’m excited about is…

designing a series that would facilitate living in the unit. The first design has a half bathroom. The second design includes a full bathroom and kitchen accommodations.

My favorite place to go for inspiration is…

outside. We built our home on our family acreage that was founded by my great grandparents in 1875, hence the original company name of Outpost 1875. I grew up there, am raising my family there, and have always been drawn home.

Someone local who I admire is…

Dick Moleseed. Dick was instrumental to my professional development at Avera, he’s a critical force in our community, and I greatly admire his work ethic.

“We are a full service gifting business specializing in gift design for corporate, events, client appreciation, special occasions and just ‘life,’” said Prairie & Pine owner Sara Rowland. “It’s a strategic and personalized way to recognize the people who help your business thrive.”

Based out of Sioux Falls, Rowland works with companies like Pinnacle Productions, Click Rain, and Lemonly to create curated gift boxes that are the customized for customers. She also works on a smaller scale for celebrations.

“Not everyone likes to shop for gifts, and many are last minute so that’s where I love to transform the whole gifting process to be stress free and just simple.”

She takes care in selecting each product that goes into her gifts, choosing products from many small businesses.

5 Questions with Rowland

How long have you been running Prairie & Pine. I had just sold my clothing store business in Brookings after a 15-year run. When we moved to Sioux Falls, I took some time off to just reflect and ignite a new vision for what was next in my entrepreneurial journey. Then, COVID. Fast forward to a drive that my husband and I went on where he asked me point blank, “What are you truly passionate about?” True story. I blurted out, “I just want to create gifts for people.”

What are some of your favorite products? I am all about collaboration, and I know how hard the small batch makers work to grow their business. If I can be a small part of that bigger dream for them, then I’m interested. Sharing that with my clients makes them feel connected to more than just “stuff” in a box, and that’s what stands out as unique. Are you the type of gift Giver that goes over the Top on holidays? A resounding yes! I love taking the time to search out each person’s interests, and I listen during conversations to get any “hints” I can. Then I spend time sourcing that perfect, thoughtful gift.

Why should people use your services? You can relax knowing that the stress of finding that perfect gift is off your shoulders. I value the creative process to find that memorable gifting solution for my clients. I give a lot of attention to the details in all my gift designs because the end result is what I want my clients to love and be proud of.

What’s the best part of your job? What drives me is making gifts memorable. I love finding that perfect gift for whatever the occasion. I love creating boxes to the best of my ability. When a client chooses to work with me, I immediately start on their project. I can honestly say that it truly motivates me to where I cannot stop thinking about it.
