About Nelson & Forbes Nelson and Forbes is managed by Deborah Foster, the daughter of a portrait sculptor. Since the company started in 2009, our aim has always been to provide truly wonderful sculpture, handmade by British craftsmen using traditional techniques, at a fair price. We work to do this with the sort of customer service that we love to receive, but that seems to be getting harder to find by the day and we still hold these principles very much at the heart of our business. We carefully select suppliers who share our values and we work with small, artisan English companies, bringing together and supporting the best of English handmade craftsmanship. We carefully package each sculpture ourselves into beautifully hand made gift boxes with luxurious certificates of authenticity. Each piece is carefully protected with layers of foam, ensuring that it arrives with you in perfect condition. We make it our priority to ensure that you are absolutely delighted by your sculpture and believe that a gift should bring pleasure from the moment it arrives (especially if you buy it for yourself!) For Spring 2015 we are thrilled to introduce to you two delightful studies of a popularly requested subject: Sitting and Standing Labrador by Sue Maclaurin (pages 26-27). We are also pleased to unveil Jonathan Sanders’s new Warthog Parade on page 50, commissioned in response to the many letters we received asking for a family of four warthogs after his first Warthog Family sold out. We are also proud to introduce our ‘Studio Maquette Collection’, a gorgeous collection of our artists’ favourite pieces, reimagined and newly sculpted by them in miniature. We hand cast these pieces in Britain using the same traditional lost wax technique that we use to cast all of our sculpture and we are particularly proud of the beautiful presentation packaging, designed to truly delight any lucky recipient. The Casting Process Every piece created by Nelson & Forbes is cast using the ancient art of lost wax casting which can be traced back over 6000 years and remains largely unchanged from its original form. It is the process that was used to create famous sculptures across the globe including the Trafalgar Square Lions and the doors of the Bank of England. The lost wax process allows every intricate detail of a sculptor’s original but often fragile work to be perfectly recreated in bronze, ensuring that their sculpture will last a lifetime. As well as bringing longevity to the sculptor’s work, bronze as a material adds an aesthetic quality all of its own which the sculptor considers when he is creating his piece. The casting process encompasses fourteen separate steps, each undertaken by skilled craftsman with years of training and experience in his craft. Each piece takes more than two weeks to complete and every one is entirely made by hand. Every time a piece is cast a new mould is created and then destroyed. This means that whilst being utterly faithful to the artist’s original work, every piece is very slightly different to the last and therefore utterly unique. Once complete, every piece is individually numbered as one of a Limited Edition. This number, combined with the artist’s signature, identifies the piece for generations to come.

Hand Made in britain
Every Nelson & Forbes piece is cast by hand in an British foundry before being individually numbered as one of a Limited Edition.
An edition of 250 means that there will be 250 bronze castings created of that piece and then no more will be produced.
All of our sculptures are carefully packaged in a handmade gift box, created by a family run Midlands box maker, using cutting and scoring machines that date from the 1890s. The boxes are then assembled and covered entirely by hand, using traditional techniques.
Each piece comes complete with a Certificate of Authenticity, signed by the artist and individually numbered. The certificates are individually printed by hand in Hampshire from an original copper plate engraving.
In an age of low cost disposable convenience, we believe in creating timeless pieces of the highest quality whilst supporting and celebrating British craftsmanship.

Sue maclaurin - Sculptor
Sue Maclaurin is no observer on the sidelines of nature; she is absolutely immersed in the countryside, whether in the U.K. or in the African bush, where she roamed on horseback during her school holidays.
For many years, whilst perfecting her sculpting by studying and sketching wildlife and making models for feature films, she also worked variously as a cattle farmer, gold miner and fish farmer. Even today, her skills as a saddle maker and fitter are very much in demand.
This absolute passion for the natural environment is evident in Sue’s collections of British wildlife sculpture. She perfectly captures the essence of each animal, from the twitch of a whisker to the cock of an ear and this gives her pieces a tangible life force that contributes to her work’s popularity with collectors and art lovers around the world.
Sue now lives and works from her studio in Wiltshire, surrounded, as one might expect, by her beloved English countryside.

Jonathan Sanders - Sculptor
It is unusual, even rare, for an artist to excel in more than one discipline, but that is what Jonathan Sanders has achieved. After graduating with a Fine Art degree from North Staffordshire University, a prized career spanning more than three decades as a landscape painter followed. Notable commissions included an album cover for the band “Ladysmith Black Mambazo” and a portait of Nelson Mandela.
With work successfully selling in galleries and well known high street stores across the U.K., Jonathan revisited his passion for sculpting and swiftly earned himself an enviable reputation as a sculptor of African wildlife.
Jonathan has spent many years studying the form and movement of the animals he loves in their native Africa. His deep knowledge and understanding of his subjects allows him to exquisitely capture the animal’s raw spirit and to imbue each of his pieces with an emotion that means his art is highly sought after by animal lovers and collectors alike.

Original Bronze Sculpture By
Nelson & Forbes and sculptor Jonathan Sanders were invited by the Wedgwood Museum to create a range of contemporary bronze sculpture, inspired by its collections. The Wedgwood Museum Collection is a unique record of the history of the Wedgwood company. It can be traced back to the founder, Josiah Wedgwood I, who, conscious of the experimental nature of the work he was undertaking, began to keep his trials and experiments for posterity. When Jonathan Sanders visited the museum, he was particularly entranced by the Domestic Employment series of Jasperware, depicting young children going about their day to day life, typically engaged in ‘domestic employment’. The depictions are a beautiful and some might say a slighly romantic view of how ordinary children experienced life in the 1780s , from the point of view of the aristocrat, Lady Elizabeth Templetown. “I couldn’t help but compare those scenes with the lives of my own children”, he says, “and was inspired to sculpt a collection of pieces of them going about their every day life today.” The resulting pieces are a depiction, by a contemporary artist, of the domestic life of today’s English child and Nelson & Forbes are proud to have the opportunity to produce them by hand in England, just as Wedgwood have done for many generations. Each piece is individually numbered and presented in a beautiful hand made gift box with a hand signed and numbered booklet of information.

Studio maquette collection The Nelson & Forbes Studio Maquette Collection features the stunning new editions of small sculptures by Jonathan Sanders and Sue Maclaurin, showcasing the artists’ brand new interpretations of some of their best loved pieces in miniature. Both artists found it satisfyingly challenging to work at this new scale as simply making an armature that is less than ten centimetres long can present some significant technical demands. However, both Jonathan Sanders and Sue Maclaurin delighted in discovering new aspects of their favourite subjects by working in this inspiring new and they are looking forward creating new pieces to add to their collections. Sculpting takes several weeks to complete, after which each maquette has a master mould made, before being carefully hand cast in our British foundry, using exactly the same traditional lost wax process that we use to hand cast all of our sculptures. Each sculpture is individually numbered as one of a limited edition of just 500 castings and bears our maker’s mark, ‘NF’, as well as the sculptor’s signature. Each piece arrives with you carefully wrapped in a velvet pouch and encased in a beautifully hand made gift box. Our luxury presentation packaging has been designed to truly delight who ever opens the box, building the excitement of what is to be found within. Accompanying your sculpture is a booklet of information, telling you everything you might like to know about your sculpture, its sculptor and how it was created. The booklet is individually numbered by hand, giving the number of your sculpture and is personally signed by the artist. The signed booklet is your guarantee that this is a genuine casting of the sculptor’s work that he or she has personally approved. Nelson & Forbes is proud to make available Jonthan Sanders’s original sketches of his sculptures as beautiful limited edition prints. These are sketches that Jonathan Sanders created while he was working on a new sculpture, before further working on and embellishing them with colour and texture until he was satisfied that they became lovely paintings in their own right. Each image has been carefully Giclee printed in Great Britain, on high quality Innova Art Fine Art Watercolour cold press 330 gsm paper, using only Epson Ultrachrome inks which are guaranteed to be light fast for 120 years in normal viewing conditions. The prints are then carefully torn around the edges and mounted by hand on Arqadia Minuet 2000 micron acid free conservation board that complies with Fine Art Trade Guild Conservation Level framing. The image stands slightly proud of the back board upon which it was mounted, so. ‘Image size’ refers to the size of the actual water colour paper image within the mount. Once each image has been printed and mounted, it is individually signed and numbered in pencil by the artist. This is your guarantee that this is an authentic, approved print of Jonathan Sanders’s original painting. You can either choose to buy them unframed or framed in a 23mm wide bronze coloured frame, mounted behind glass. Please note that all prints are shown framed in this brochure.
