I feel like I’ve been incredibly negative lately about radio.

Over the winter break I had the misfortune of driving many, many hours with nothing but terrestrial radio and a box of Good & Plenty to entertain me. It was bad enough trying to find an alternative to holiday music but the true shit floated to the top when stations couldn’t rest on the old December standby programming and went back to their standard fare. The only saving graces (besides two seriously catchy Beyoncé singles that seemed to own the dial) were the few chances I could grab something at the south end of the dial for however many miles I could hold it. Commercial radio playlists these days are as dated as typewriters and nowhere near as entertaining. These behemoths that dominate our industry have done little to advance the medium. This is why it’s so much more important that college and non-commercial radio stays healthy as mass media continues to evolve through new technology. Perhaps the future of college radio has nothing to do with the radio at all. Maybe what we think of as radio today will evolve into a media brand rather than a media type. As the internet and digital resources find new means in portability, the AM and FM signals with which we’ve all grown up are transforming into little more than a historical stepping stone to new ground. Now is the time to decide if your individual station is on the cusp of something great or left with nothing but memories. It’s that much more important for us to collectively rise up and stand together because the non-comm world can afford to be collaborative while competing for the same listener. If we aren’t supporting each other, who will?

Josh Reichman Oracle Band Life Is Legal [EP]

After releasing 12 EPs in 2006, Brooklyn’s Bishop Allen have shifted their attention to full-lengths, recording two albums in less than three years. This LP hones the band’s popsensibilities as jingling, easily accessible melodies are packed into the album’s short songs. Continuing their penchant for varied instrumentation, Bishop Allen invoke strings, horns, ukuleles, marimbas and they even switch singers (“True or Falseâ€?) to exact precise emotions from their songs The marimba on “The Lion and the Teacup,â€? for instance, evokes a childlike lightness, while the brass and ukulele on “True or Falseâ€? borrows from the Euro importations of Beirut. Justin Rice’s lyrical wit is as sharp as ever, yet it’s the catchy hooks and choruses that separate Grrr‌ from its predecessors. KS JUST THE FACTS

This Wolf Parade side project isn’t exactly wooing PETA by shooting press photos featuring fur coats and an animal bust.

But with a combination of robotic sonic texture and lyrics commenting on modern life, they do make their own kind of statement here, buttressed by lots of skinny hipster husband-wife allure. Montreal’s Dan Boeckner plays guitar and tambourine and sings mournfully over variations on Alexei Perry’s static keyboard and drum machine beats. With a few exceptions, each song feels like it’s hovering around the same tempo, with some recycled drum samples throughout. This makes for a measure of monotony, but melds well with the intriguing concept of how to remain human in an increasingly technological world. VH JUST THE FACTS

On this debut release from Josh Reichmann and his new band, the former Tangiers’ leader concocts exotic pop that teems with audacious horns, funky drums and jazzy musical explosions. Though only five tracks long, the record is packed with kaleidoscopic personality. Its brazen instrumentation and Reichmann’s smooth, groovy vocals hook you and make you want to move amid the sometimes jazz-inflected romps. For the final track, “Runes,�

Reichmann adds a little bit of tribal to his tempo.

Bongo-type drumming and a cool, chirping flute temper the bombastic but infectious sax. It’s a multifaceted and utterly irresistible number, blending rhythms and live melodic fragments. When it comes to the Josh Reichmann Oracle Band, dancing is no crime. CB JUST THE FACTS

When mixing for an incredibly diverse group of acts (including the Notwist and TV On The Radio), it’s easy to lose sight of potential solo work. Luckily for Anticon co-founder and all-around prolific producer Tony P. Madison (aka Odd Nosdam), this has never been an issue. When Nosdam was asked by Element to create a soundtrack for the skateboard film, This Is My Element, he crafted each track to a particular skater—from the Chad Muska-inspired, rhythmically side-winding “Trunk Bomb,” to the laid back glide of “Cop Crusher,” for Bam Margera. The variety in style is astounding. However, only a seasoned producer could create a soundtrack so accurate to its source yet can stand on its own. JP

In these stressful times, we can all use a little optimism, which is why it’s easy to be moved by Detroit singer-songwriter Robin Horlock on his fine second album. At the start, he croons that life without music wouldn’t be life at all, and it’s just such simple passion that keeps his Music lively.

Horlock sticks mainly to mid-tempo ballads peppered with a touch of twang, an understated backing band, and a smooth rasp, further establishing himself as a rising songwriter. He plays around with arrangements just enough (a nicely rising crescendo on “When You’re Young,” some brazen, brassy horns on “Life Goes On”) to keep the general sweetness of the album from becoming overly uniform. A strong effort. MT

Swan Lake Enemy Mine

Nearly diving into the recent Simon And Garfunkel indie-folk vogue, Swan Lake chooses to keep its Canadian supergroup feet on the ground with subtle electronics, lilting vocals and refined piano throughout their sophomore album. While the press release promises “nice songs,” Swan Lake reveals some quite dark slivers, as in “Peace,” where indie multitasker Dan Bejar moans, “We’re gonna purge the terror in your hearts;” or the moody tone of “Warlock Psychologist.” The sound is larger and more ambient than expected from the three-man band as they subtly venture into shoegaze territory with “A Hand At Dusk”, but the insistent beat keeps the eyes off the loafers. As far as subject matter, this Swan Lake is a little murkier. CB

Telepathe Dance Mother

Off-kilter harmonies, echoing synths, and strange, sometimes haunting lyrics fill this Brooklyn duo’s debut.

Their trip-hopping, shoegazing electronica is beautiful and slightly disconcerting. In “Devil’s Trident,” a stuttering synth and heavy beat provide the backdrop for Busy Gangnes and Melissa Livaudias’ spoken oddities.

In unison they sing, “Every day dearest orchid / find a way and pray and pray / behind the eyes of your sister’s portrait.” With loops and layers, their child-like vocals mesmerize and populate an airy soundscape with surreal fragments of thought.

Telepathe is also a big fan of the sing-a-long “ohwhoa,” as on the stripped down track, “Chrome’s On It.” Dance Mother easily stands out from the typical over-embellished electronica. It’s both elegant and addictive. CB

Lady Sovereign Jigsaw (midget)

After being taken under the wing of Jay-Z and collaborating with the likes of the Beastie Boys and Pharrell, it seems Lady Sovereign has had it with the pressures of stardom.

This time around, the high school drop-out is distributing music through her own label. Sovereign’s thick British rapping over synth-based dance tracks certainly gives her music an edge. Whether she’s chummy like on track opener, “Let’s Be Mates,” grinding on the sweaty club track, “I Got You Dancing,” or being dragged to a college bar in the song “Student Union,” Lady Sovereign’s confrontational confidence contrasts well with her subtle ability to display vulnerability.

Though Jigsaw’s hooks are often repetitive, the Lady still makes you want to dance, love or hate her. VH

Boogaloo Pow Wow: Dancefloor Rendez-vous In Young Nuyorica Various Artists

In the 1960s, sizzling dancefloor blends paved the grimy streets of the Big Apple’s bourgeoning underground salsa scene, an umbrella term for an array of genres like wild boogaloo, the Latino community’s answer to jive, and the then-trendy pachanga. In addition to such resurfaced ungawa here are early Cubop tracks— an Afro-Cuban mélange that isn’t far from the hot traditional Havana dancehall favorites like cha cha cha and guaguanco, that still manages to incorporate steel drums and bombastic beats, including Machito’s “Tanga,” the first documented Cubop track. Even with a healthy dose of improvisational Latin jazz and a loyal following of dancers, these less than commercial boleros faded into the annals of hip-shaking history, superbly boogaloo’d again for this comp. Los Fabulosos Cadillacs La Luz Del Ritmo

It’s been nearly a decade since these Grammywinning Argentine alt-rock superstars last released new material. Although founders Señor Flavio and Vicentico took a break to work on individual projects, the multifaceted outfit has been successfully fusing jazz, ska, salsa, funk and rock nacional since the mid-’80s (if mostly in the live setting). La Luz Del Ritmo, already certified platinum in Argentina and Mexico, is no exception. There are five poppy new songs along with reworked versions of previously released Cadillacs’ tracks, including mega-hit “Mal Bicho,” and even a few covers—en Español, naturally—of the Clash’s classic, “Should I Stay Or Should I Go” and Ian Dury And The Blockheads’ new wave favorite, “Wake Up And Make Love With Me.” LH

No matter what production techniques, guest stars or orchestral flourishes are thrown at Neko Case’s pipes, they ring triumphant and turn all other elements into (often rather lovely) windowdressing. That said, it’s fun to hear Case and coproducer Darryl Neudorf try their best to badger— the elaborate strings on “Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth,” or the hazy, echo-y effects on opener, “This Tornado Loves You”—only to have Case’s rich voice dispatch anything in its path. In fact, the best moments here occur when things get stripped down to just Case, thus allowing lines like, “Baby why am I worried now/did someone make a fool of me/ because I could show ‘em how its done” deliver a direct sucker punch to the listener’s soul. Thank You Very Quickly (Thrill jockey) On their third record of blues and rockin’ benga—an East African pop style rife with stark electric guitars licks—this Kenyan/American outfit puts forth another joyful selection of songs. Hips will sway to the psychedelic riffs and explosive drums, and voices will arise to sing celebratory songs and offer pleas to lend heart and hands to AIDS sufferers. Recorded during a volatile period in Kenyan history, and in the less than ideal location of the laundry room/hallway in guitarist Ian Eagleson’s parents’ house, Thank You Very Quickly, is just that—a six track expression of gratitude to all those who supported the band members and their families though the political violence that broke out in 2008. It isn’t easy having the weight of the world on your shoulders. Or at least the weight of expectations from non-mascara-ed, politically minded pop-punk fans who expect you to uphold an anti-consumerist flag whose colors seem to be fading. But that’s Propagandhi’s long-held place in the Warped world. Despite the propulsive polka beats and longtime spot on the Fat Wreck Chords roster, singer/ guitarist Chris Hannah tells CMJ that he never felt like his Canadian comrades fit into that skater slot. And though their latest, Supporting Caste (Small Man), is not on Fat and does crank out more complex structures, fans can be forgiven if dreams of Propagandhi opening on a Lagwagon reunion tour still ollie in their heads.

It’s been about four years since the last record. What were you doing in the interim?

We were all working. I was working at a record label called G7 that took up a lot of my time. We added a new member to the band. Then we did what in retrospect was quite a bit of touring, but relative to what other bands do, it was very sparse. In the past year I kind of went on a sabbatical from the label, which is pretty much in hibernation. And we were working on this record and got it done in nine months.

Sometimes as bands start to age, one of the things that happens is you don’t hang out as much, maybe you practice here and there. Is that kind of what was happening with the band, or were you sure there was going to be another record?

Primarily the band’s purpose is to entertain ourselves. It always has been. And that’s how the record sort of comes together, it’s just by each person coming to our practice in our basement and wanting to impress the other guys with either a cool riff or funny lyrical idea.

All the time over the years that we appeared to be quiet in public, we 10

were as active in the basement as we always are. As a band we never completely immersed ourselves in the mechanisms that bands typically do to further the idea of a career in music.

Yeah, like six records in a 20-plus-year career. You definitely don’t follow the usual new album every year and a half template.

I’m sure it would help us, at least in terms of paying rent, if we actually did. I think we’re all stuck here enough that we don’t like to be away for all that amount of time.

Are you aware the press release for Supporting Caste compares it to Rush and Voivod? Is that Canadian pride, a little bit of humor, or serious allusion?

Yeah, we put those in there. It’s definitely not Canadian pride, but it’s the regional influence. From 10-years old to now, we’ve admired those bands. All those bands mentioned in there have been doing their thing no matter what market forces do to their careers. We’ve always admired that, bands that just keep plucking away though apparently nobody’s listening—at least as far as getting any press.

But do you mean musically too?

Yeah, musically. I don’t know if we’re really that much of a punk band. I think most of our initial influences came from the metal scene in the early to mid-80s. That’s where we kind of get interested in music. The records I listen to—if it’s not mid-80s hardcore like Bad Brains or Cromags—it’s Rush, Voivod, Sacrifice. It’s the stuff that appeals to me most aesthetically. I put on one of those records and usually 10 minutes later I pick up a guitar and start picking around.

Probably your political lyrics and the record labels you’ve been on have attached the mantel of the serious, political punk band. Does

that ever wear down the musical end of the band?

Not for us during practice. But I’m sure through many years, people who we were told were our peers didn’t always resonate with us.

Perhaps we were still a little marginalized by the music we were connected with.

for eight hours. The whole system is falling apart, and that’s because we’re cutting spending on things like that and spending money on wars. So yeah, I guess this is a long way of saying that I think it’s a myth that Canadians have any more common sense than Americans.

And in some cases, even the opposite is true.

In what way?

There is a certain sound that people have come to expect from that label (Fat Wreck Chords) and those bands. I never really felt too much a part of it. In fact, as far back as the mid-90s on our second record, I knew we were going in a separate direction than they anticipated.

And I think maybe from just being from Winnipeg and not from California, and not being immersed in the whole Warped Tour music scene, I think a lot of those things came together to make us feel like an outsider… I think there was enough of a chasm between our perspective [compared to NOFX], on endorsing the Democratic Party as opposed to a third party like the Green Party or Ralph Nader. The chasm became unbridgeable after awhile in terms of how we viewed each other’s punk.

I knew this Canadian band that told me that they applied to the government and got $10,000 for a U.S. tour. Is that kind of stuff still possible in Canada?

Yep. We actually did that for the first time about a year and a half ago. Your tour has to show a log. You have to file your receipts and it’s a pretty tedious process. If you’re going to try to work it, it might not be worth it. But if you’re going to come home with money out of hand compared to what you put into it, then you are eligible. I don’t think Avril Lavigne or somebody could get it. But that stuff’s in danger, all that funding. And I don’t feel a sense of entitlement to it, outside the fact that the government takes my tax dollars and spends it on military machines in a country I don’t think we should be in.

In that sense, I fucking want my money back. But I mean, good art doesn’t depend on funding. The evidence for that is overwhelming. In America, for example, where some of the best music ever made came from, with no funding like that.

But not too ugly of a break up with Fat? I guess it just kind of fizzled. We just never heard from them again.

For this last record, they had no interest in putting it out because we had no plans. God knows they had no enthusiasm for anything we were doing. So fuck it, we’ll do it ourselves.

In terms of being from Canada, do you think there’s a built-in common sense about things like universal health care and not supporting huge military budgets, things that in America are often called “extreme left-wing?”

I wish that were true about Canadians. Increasingly, we have a very conservative administration in power compared to, at least on paper, the Obama administration. And Canada has engaged in a foreign war that is arguably a material war for access to resources, even though it is committed under the auspices of “encouraging democracy.” I’d like to think that people here do have common sense when it comes to voting or health care. The population of Canada, in terms of access to health care, they would probably go ape shit if it were pulled out from under them. But, I also think that that process is under way.

Things are getting worse here. Anytime anybody I know has to go to the emergency room to get urgent care, they’re waiting and waiting

Yeah, the blues didn’t come from much government funding.

Yeah. But I would encourage people, if their tax dollars are being used for things that are against their values, to try to get some of it back.

Alright, well there’s that mantel of politics... This sounds like a crass question at first—but it happens as you get older and you’re busy playing music yourself—do you find yourself still searching out new bands?

To be honest, I think most of the guys in the band pick out new sounds from the past, whether it’s older jazz, older Zappa… I don’t know why. We don’t really look to contemporary punk. We don’t have many expectations for something new and amazing coming out of it, but obviously we’ve been proven wrong many times over, especially if you look a little deeper underneath the radar.

Amadou &Mariam International Geographic: Globetrotting With

At first, Mariam Doumbia’s static vocals may seem to be breaking through from a far-off transistor radio. Then the lo-fi intro is quickly shattered by a minimalist drum loop and Doumbia’s sudden, unassuming falsetto. With the added inclusion of electronic embellishments and a vocoder, it’s a graceful pop lullaby. The song is “Sabali,” the Damon Albarnproduced opening track off Welcome To Mali (Nonesuch), the latest oeuvre from Amadou And Mariam. The married couple met in the 1970s at the Institute For The Young Blind in the Malian capital of Bamako. Amadou Bagayoko was the teacher, Mariam Doumbia the student. Often being called “the blind couple from Mali” has somewhat stigmatized what is truly a romantic musical success. The two are still very much in love—Amadou even professes his love for Mariam in “I Follow You,” 10

Like any simplistic genre-specific designations, labeling a record “world music” can send it out on a one-way trip to an isolated niche corner of a record shop. Welcome To Mali is not to be cast off as cultural art du jour, but rather hailed as a global pop phenomenon.

“When [I] was younger [I] learned the guitar not only listening to Mali musicians, but from tapes, from blues and rock and roll and Cuban music,” Amadou Bagayoko explains through a French translator.

But despite the language barrier Bagayoko seems like an unassuming guy, exchanging a few Francophone quips with his translator before he lets loose a truly congenial belly laugh. “Yeah, it was about something he always felt. He talks a lot about Hendrix for example… and a lot of other musicians too,” the translator paraphrases.

The duo’s work with Brit-pop wonder Damon Albarn, of Blur and Gorillaz fame, began with Albarn’s ongoing interest in the lively West African music scene. But it wasn’t until their participation in Africa Express that the three were able to meet face-to-face.

Amadou enumerates: “[Africa Express] is a project, like an exchange, based on an exchange of concerts with African musicians and basically more English musicians, but also musicians around Europe that goes in Africa and do concerts. They do different places each year.

They did Kinshasa [Congo] and Lagos [Nigeria]. They invite the same musicians that have played together in those festivals to U.K. to play in events altogether also. So it’s really based on a musical exchange between Africa and Europe, but we can say more specifically U.K.” The exchange worked, leading to two wildly different songs that Albarn worked on: the ethereal electro-pop of “Sabali” as well as the politically charged “Ce n’Est Pa Bon.” The former heavily showcases Albarn’s production skills, resulting in a product closer to the futuristic pop of Gorillaz’ Demon Days; whereas the latter focuses on the afro-groove guitar that’s Amadou And Mariam’s trademark.

This wasn’t the first time that Amadou And Mariam were involved in a cross-continental collaboration, nor will it be the last.

Dimanche à Bamako, the 2005 album that skyrocketed the duo to fame, was produced by French born Basque-Galician superstar Manu Chao. “All that was very positive,” explains the translator, “so if they decided to go somewhere else with that new album it was only from process they had in the beginning to have different direction, dif-

ferent collaboration and different approach to each album. It’s only about trying to find new direction, and new musical experience.”

Another addition to the record is Canadian rapper, K’Naan, who met Amadou and Mariam at a gig in England. “He was playing on the stage, and they were listening to him in the dressing room,” as the translator explains, “and they started to sing his song because they found it was similar to something they sing themselves in African music in general, and it came very natural to sing what he was doing.

They really enjoyed what they heard in the dressing room, and they got to talk to him about it, and they get very well along. So they invited him to come to a festival they organized at the Blind Institute.

So he came to Mali, and they start working with him from that moment.” K’Naan, an émigré born in war-torn Mogadishu, put a North American hip-hop spin on “Africa,” an infectious drum-heavy tribute to the land he, Bagayoko and Doumbia share.

But embracing a borderless sound does not mean the duo has ignored the traditional music from their homeland. Instead, Welcome To Mali embraces modern West African blues, demonstrated through Bagayoko’s masterful guitar skills. “He really loved music from very young,” says the translator, “and it’s that attraction that naturally brought him to try to make, modify, and not only play what his ancestors had been playing for a while, but trying to naturally go in another direction, but still enjoy the music of his country.” Turning their sights on a more traditional sound, the duo also enlisted griot and kora (a 21-string lute) virtuoso Toumani Diabaté. “Toumani is a friend from a long time [ago],” says Bagayoko, “and [we] know each other from Bamako. It’s a very much more natural relation, long relation, about Mali musicians that knows everybody.”

Although with Amadou And Maraiam music never ceases to be international language, protection of artist rights are practically nonexistent in some parts of the world. “There is not much incoming money for musician in Mali, and getting paid properly,” Bagayoko explains. While we in North America and Europe sit at desks and discuss the legal ramifications of file sharing, music pirates in Bamako do it the old fashion way—swapping cassettes on city streets. Amadou is not letting his success cloud his vision. Instead he is president of the Malian Musicians Federation where he fights for musicians’ rights “so that the other musicians of Mali, who may not be as famous, can be benefit from just a little way of living.”

So, what do you do over at Mute?

Supposedly I’m in charge of radio promotion for the entirety of North America (at least the NAFTA countries). Sadly, I don’t get a ton of action south of the border. This saddens me, as I really love singing that Wall Of Voodoo song, but can find no professional reason to do so. It’s the “Whoaoh” part that gets me.

Wall Of Voodoo isn’t a Mute band.

This is true. I’m working on getting Liars to do an erratic, fuzzed-out cover. It will slay.

What’s your favorite Mute song with a “whoa-oh?”

Honestly, I’m not totally sure there is one. Or at least I’m blanking right now. This can be the CMJ challenge I suppose for the readers. They can find the Mute “whoa-oh” song and prove me wrong.

Can they Twitter you the answer?

We are on twitter. I think we signed up a short while ago. However, I’m not the keeper of the Twitter here.

So unless the message gets relayed I won’t immediately see the answer.

Do any of your bands twit (or whatever the verb is)?

I believe we have a fully non-twitting roster of artists. If we have anyone step up to the plate I’d put my money on Polly Scattergood though, as she tends to update her MySpace with incredible regularity. She’s just a few steps away from twitting, or tweeting or whatever it’s called these days.

You have some pretty mysterious artists. Have you ever met the Residents?

If I have, I’m unaware. I meet count-

less people who claim that they know where/who the Residents are... but no two stories seem to be the same.

People have latched onto them in a serious way though, which I find refreshing for an anonymous band.

I was on the train the other day and saw someone with a Residents tattoo on their arm. Though they have remained faceless, people propagate them in other ways.

Have you seen other Mute tattoos or little tributes? Anyone wearing the Knife masks?

I’ve seen an Einsturzende Neubauten tattoo as well, which I imagine is an instant conversation piece when you walk into a party. The plague masks that the Knife wear are a bit dark, but I’ve seen pictures of folks wearing them out for Halloween.

What records do you have coming out this year?

This will be a pretty killer year for us in terms of releases. Fever Ray (Karin from the Knife) will be in March.

We’ll have the debut record from Polly Scattergood shortly thereafter, and are expecting new records from Tiny Masters Of Today, Liars, Maps and a few others as the year goes on.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Hmm… I suppose I should shout out my old college station, WDBM in East Lansing. Without them, I’d likely not be doing what I’m doing now.

And I’ll say I’m rather excited to see wi-fi getting placed in cars in the near future so that we can stream college stations who are online anywhere in the country. Soon we’ll have the good stuff everywhere.

You are an AM station with an FM signal. Explain how that works.

Machen Davis: KUOM has been a licensed AM radio station since January, 1922, the tenth oldest station in the country and oldest in the state of Minnesota. Although we have substantial power on AM (5000 watts which reaches out 65-90 miles, depending on the direction), we are limited to broadcasting in the daytime. Throughout our existence we have tried to find a way to extend our broadcast hours. When streaming became possible in the late ‘90s, we started doing that very early. In 2003, we reached an agreement with a local school district station to share their low power (8 watts) frequency at 106.5 MHz. They only use the station on school days during school hours and we use it the rest of the time, which includes all night every night when the AM signs off. Over the last few years we have moved the joint antenna to improve our coverage of the original signal and added a 10-watt translator station at 100.7 FM to extend the signal towards St. Paul.

We broadcast the same audio on all our outlets, but the only outlet that’s available 24/7 is the web streaming.

AM is still on only 6:00 a.m. to average monthly local sunset. And FM (including translators) is on most of the time except when the high school is in session. In the next week or so we will add a second translator station at 99 watts on 104.5 MHz to provide an excellent signal in the center of the Twin Cities metropolitan area.

It’s difficult to market the station with this crazy quilt of availability.

What are you doing for you SXSW remote broadcast?

Dana Raidt: We are the only station from Minneapolis/St. Paul broadcast-

ing from Austin this year. It’s our first time doing this and we’re really excited! We will be broadcasting live from Premium Recording Service, March 18-20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The broadcast will feature us DJing, plus we’ll be hosting about 15 bands for live in-studios. We have a great lineup, including All The Saints, Sunset, Superdrag, Anni Rossi and a lot more.

In addition, we’ll be blogging on our website, interviewing bands, posting audio (and hopefully video) of the sessions, and our news department will be putting together a special SXSW recap package using the content we gather while in Austin. We’re sending myself, the assistant music/program director, marketing director, morning show host and program coach.

There are also some volunteers and members of the Minneapolis music community going down on their own who will hang out and help gather content for the blog. We’re really excited to be working with Premium Recording Service—that’s where Bill Callahan recorded his Woke On A Whaleheart record; and Okkervil River, Voxtrot and Sunset have also recorded there.

Tell us about the Stuck On AM series.

MD: Stuck On AM is our series of music compilations made from live recordings in the station’s performance studio. It started in 1994 with a double-disc release featuring local artists that performed on our local show, Off The Record. Since then it’s grown to include national acts as well. We recently just released the sixth edition featuring Fiery Furnaces, Dosh, Final Fantasy, Tapes ‘N Tapes, Land Of Talk, Nomo, among many others. Past compilations have featured Metric, Tegan and Sara, Spoon, Andrew Bird and more.
