FOLKTALE
One day, King Krishna Deva Raya saw a strange dream. He dreamt of a magnificent magical palace. It was made of dazzling stones and floated in the air. The palace had every comfort and amenity that one could ever wish for. It could be lit up with a thousand lights or made to disappear into the darkness in a jiffy. The next day when the king woke up, he vividly remembered the dream. He summoned all his courtiers and told them about it. The courtiers sang praises of the king and his beautiful dream. The king made a public announcement: “I will give a hundred thousand gold coins to the person who can build me the palace of my dream.” Everyone was startled at the king’s announcement. They knew that it was not practically possible to build the palace that the king wanted. But no one had the courage to say so. Many of the king’s well-wishers told him that such a palace can only exist in one’s mind. But he refused to listen and threatened his courtiers with grave consequences if they did not find someone who could make his dream come true. The courtiers got worried and approached Tenali Raman for help. The senior minister requested Tenali Raman, “Dear Tenali, now only you can make our king understand that his wish to erect the palace of his dream is absurd or else all of us will get a severe punishment.” Tenali Raman assured them that he would try to help them. A few days later, a very old man came to meet the king in his court. He was crying for justice. Krishna Deva Raya
Tenali Raman:
The King's Condition
asked, “What brings you here my good man? Tell me without fear and I assure you that justice will be done.” “I have been robbed, Your Majesty,” wailed the old man. “Someone has taken away all my savings and now I don’t have a single paisa left.” “Who robbed you?” asked the king angrily. “Such a crime cannot go unpunished. You name him and I will have him hanged immediately!” Your Majesty! I will tell you but first assure me that on hearing upon his name, you will not get angry and punish me instead,” requested the old man. Yes, I promise,” replied the king impatiently. “It is you, my lord,” said the old man in a trembling voice. How dare you say a ridiculous thing like that, I will…,” began the king, but then he remembered his promise and calmed down. He asked that the old man to explain what he actually meant to say. “Your Majesty! Last night, I dreamt that you came with your entourage of ministers and soldiers and looted my entire life’s savings, five thousand gold coins!” said the old man.“ Are you a fool or completely insane?” roared the king. “How can you treat your dream as a reality? Dreams are not true!”“But they are, Your Majesty! If your dream of a palace hanging in air can come true, why can’t my dream come true?” retorted the old man. And then, the man took off his beard, hair and stood before the king. It was none other than Tenali Raman! He bowed before the king and said, “Your Majesty! This was the only way of convincing you that building the palace of your dreams was not practically possible.”

A Bicycle built for Two
There was an ambitious young eel Who determined to ride on a wheel; But try as he might, He couldn’t ride right, In spite of his ardor and zeal If he sat on the saddle to ride His tail only pedalled one side; And I’m sure you’ll admit That an eel couldn’t sit On a bicycle saddle astride. Or if he hung over the top, He could go, but he never could stop;
For of course it is clear He had no way to steer, And under the wheel he would flop. His neighbor, observing the fun, Said, “I think that the thing can be done, If you’ll listen to me,You’ll quickly agree That two heads are better than one. And this is my project, old chap, Around our two waists I will wrap This beautiful belt Of bottle-green felt And fasten it firm with a strap.” This done, with a dignified mien The two squirmed up on the machine, And rode happily away, Or at least, so they say, Who witnessed the wonderful scene.
Sam Visits Pamukkale
Discover A New Place
Hot water in white terraces! That’s what’s around me here in Pamukkale, Turkey. Located in the inner Aegean region of Turkey, Pamukkale is a natural site featuring hot springs and white travertines and it’s one of the most beautiful places to see in Turkey. The Cotton Castle Pamukkale means “cotton castle” in Turkish, and the place is rightly named so. Owing to the deposits of calcium carbonate by the flowing water, the hot springs are surrounded by white terraces. And as these terraces and pools rise up, the area appears like a white castle. The ancient Greco-Roman and Byzantine city of Hierapolis was built on top of this white castle, the ruins of which can still be seen from 20 km away! The ruins are still remarkably well preserved, owing to efforts taken when the site was declared a world heritage site. Prior to the declaration, the location was in danger of being totally damaged due to hotels and roads being built over the ruins. One of the best things to do here is walk up to the ruins of Hierapolis, where you can bathe in the mineral water pools. Because of its status as a world heritage site, preservation efforts are now undertaken, to ensure minimum damage to the delicate calcite deposits. That’s why there’s no footwear allowed here, on the travertines as well the pools.

Bumbley! Don’t chew your nails! Why do we bite our nails?
The habit of nail biting or ‘onychophagia’ could develop because of many reasons. You may notice that this habit is one seen in both children and adults. There are many causes for this habit to grow. People sometimes bite their nails when they are feeling nervous, worried, lonely or bored. They do not realize when they are chewing their nails as it becomes such a natural action. You may notice that you bite your nails more before or during exams or when you are feeling upset. Biting your nails is an unhygienic habit for many reasons. Your finger nails contain many germs which enter your stomach when you chew or bite
on your nails. Biting your nails or pulling on the skin around them could also damage your finger tips or cause your nails to regrow unevenly. This habit could also lead to an infection on your finger tips and cause damage to your teeth and jaws. The first habit you must develop is to keep your nails cut short and keep your hands clean. There are many things you can do every time you feel the need to bite your nails. You can play with a stress ball or stroke a smooth pebble to help deal with feelings of anxiety or stress. You can also stop yourself from biting your nails by painting your nails with bitter tasting nail polish or by wearing a pair of gloves on your hands.
How are duck feathers waterproof? When you take a bath you get soaked in water, your hair gets wet and it takes a while for it to dry. Notice a duck when she is swimming in a pool. You will see that even if they are in water, the feathers of the duck seem to be totally dry. So why do duck feathers stay dry… are they waterproof? Ducks spend a lot of their time nibbling their feathers with their beaks. This act is known as preening. Ducks have a special gland positioned near their tails; called the preen gland. The preen gland produces an oil which the ducks rub all over their feathers. This oil creates a barrier so that the feathers do not become waterlogged; thus making the feathers waterproof. Since duck feathers do not soak water, they also weigh less than they would if their feathers absorbed water. Beneath the first layer of feathers is another layer of soft feathers. The outer feathers act as a raincoat or a waterproof barrier to protect the inner feathers which keep the ducks warm. This requires constant maintenance so it becomes essential for ducks to constantly preen themselves to help keep them in good shape and continue spreading the oil all over their body. Ducks would drown if they did not have their special preen gland.

AMUSING NEWS
a comic story
sir dig-a-lot
Megadalon
“We always talk about dynasties or historical heroes. We hardly talk about the places, monuments or animals that are prehistoric,” complained Rohan to his friend Sir Dig-A-Lot
Sir Dig-A-Lot said “Alright, fair enough! We will talk about a prehistoric animal today. One that is lesser known and extinct. I am going to tell about the Megalodon”.
Sir Dig-A-Lot adjusted his glasses and sat comfortably next to Rohan. He continued...
“In ancient Greek language Megalodon means ‘big tooth’. It is an extinct species of shark that lived 1.5 million years ago. The size of the Megalodon was so big that the modern day white shark would look like a baby in comparison to it.
It is believed to be 50 feet long, that is about a 5 story building. The name big tooth was coined because its teeth are 7 inches long and it used to weigh a massive. 70 tons. In comparison a white shark’s teeth are only 3 inches long and the only sea animal to outweigh the Megalodon is the blue whale. It was considered probably the biggest and fiercest predators in history.”
“The Megalodon could open its jaws so wide that a person as tall as 6 feet could walk easily in and out of it. According to a survey in the year 2008, the bite of the Megalodon is considered to be the most powerful of all the animals that have ever lived.
If you thought the bite of a shark is powerful, a Megalodon’s bite is 10 times more powerful. When a white shark bites it applies a pressure of 1.8 tons, whereas the bite of a Megalodon generated a pressure of 11 to 18 tones on its victim. That amount of pressure could crush the hardest of skull like a grape. It attacked the fins first so that its prey could not escape easily.”
“As the largest animal of the sea, a Megalodon could just about eat any animal in the sea. Its diet mostly consisted of the whale among other sea animals.
Studies have been possible as sharks shed their teeth often and teeth of Megalodon have been found in all parts of the world. The first sighting of the same was in the 17th century where the size of the massive teeth made people curious to study the creature over a period of time.”
“So how does an animal so big and fierce get extinct?” asked Rohan
“There is no concrete answer yet. Most views point to the effect of global cooling and by the disappearance of its main diet, the giant whales. There was also competition from the ancestral killer whales that lead to its decline. Some people believe that the Megalodon still lurks in the depth of the oceans. However there is no evidence to support this.”
“Wow that was a great story. I would love to hear more about such creatures,” Rohan said. “Certainly and the time will come,” Sir Dig-A-Lot concluded.
My grandfather and I would go each morning to the near-by lake and feed the ducks. It was our way of spending some time together before the day began. For a week now, we had been watching a mother duck swimming across the lake with 6 new born ducklings swimming right behind her. One morning, as usual, we reached the lake to feed the ducks. To our shock, we found two of the ducklings were missing. The mother duck was searching around the lake, looking worried. We knew we needed to help!

Facts about the Niagra Falls The Niagara Falls are made up of 3 waterfalls: the American Falls, the Bridal Veil Falls and the Horseshoe Falls. The three waterfalls merge together to produce the highest flow rate of any waterfall on earth. The falls were created by glacier activity thousands of years ago. At the current rate of erosion, scientists believe that the Niagara Falls will be gone in around 50000 years. Luckily, you still have time to see them! The water of Niagara Falls almost completely stopped and froze in the winters of 1848 for 30-40 hours, because of an immense ice blockage at the mouth of Lake Erie.
