FOLKTALE Panchatantra: The
Prince and the Bear
Once, a prince went on a hunting spree in a dense forest. He wandered the whole day in search of prey but did not come across a single animal, big or small that he could kill. By the evening he got very tired and thus, sat under a tree to take some rest. Just then, he saw a huge tiger coming out of the bushes and moving forward towards him. The prince was petrified and in order to save his life, he climbed up the nearest tree. When he reached the top of the tree, he saw a huge bear sitting on one of the branches. He started to tremble with fear as he thought that he would now surely be killed by either of the two wild animals. The bear calmed down the prince and said, “Don’t worry, my dear prince. This tree is my house and thus, you are my guest. I never harm my guests.” The prince believed in what the bear said and stopped panicking. The tiger also sat down under the tree and kept waiting for the prince to come down. Soon the sun set and there was darkness everywhere. The prince was terribly tired and, he fell fast asleep on the branch. When the tiger saw the sleeping prince, he said to the bear, “Do not give shelter to this prince. Human beings are our enemies. Push him down on the ground and let me make him my meal.” “No, I will never do such an evil thing.” said the bear. “Moreover, he is my guest,” the bear added. In the morning, when the prince woke up, he saw the bear sleeping beside him. The cunning tiger said to the prince, “Don’t trust this wicked bear! He is being nice to you only till the time I am sitting here. The moment I leave, he will kill you. So, I would advise you to push this bear down before me. I will eat him and let you go.” The selfish prince thought that it was not a bad idea to throw the bear down and save his life. So, he pushed the unsuspecting bear off the branch. The bear woke up with a jerk and caught hold of another branch and saved his life somehow. He cursed the prince for his selfishness and said, “It was indeed a mistake on my part to place my trust in a selfish human being like you.”

Discoveries and Inventions
Radium is a radioactive element with the chemical symbol 'Ra'. It emits radioactive light rays which cause it to glow in the dark. In regular conditions, radium is a silvery metal. When exposed to air, it reacts to nitrogen and quickly forms a black coating. Marie and Pierre Curie discovered radium in the form of radium chloride. Later, it was isolated in its metallic state through the electrolysis of radium chloride, by Marie Curie and AndrĂŠ-Louis Debierne. Radium was discovered in 1898 and isolated in its metallic state in 1911. Marie and Pierre Curie discovered radium while working with samples of uraninite (pitchblende). After extracting uranium from uraninite, they discovered it was still radioactive. This suggested that it contained another element other

than uranium which was also radioactive. Further studies led to the discovery of radium. The Curies announced their discovery to the French Academy of Sciences on the 26th of December, 1898. In September of 1911, Marie Curie and AndrĂŠ-Louis Debierne announced that they were successful in extracting a sample of radium in its metallic state. Radium was initially used to make paints which would glow. These paints were used on clocks, watches and instruments that people could see in the dark. However today, the element has no major industrial uses as radium is highly radioactive and dangerous.

comic story
einstien iyengar Eeshan woke to the smell of his favourite lamb cutlets, that his mother was cooking. He washed up fast and ran to the kitchen to hug his mother. Thank you, Ma! This day is going to start on a delicious note.
You are welcome, son. Eeshan noticed the color of the red meat, changing to brown when it was cooking and asked his mom. Why is the color of the meat changing, ma? Einstein Iyengar, there is science behind this. Most of the food we eat contains about 70-75% of water. In the case of red meat, it also contains proteins and fat.
6
When we heat the meat, the water begins to leach out. Any food while preparing reduces in size as it is cooked, as it releases water. The proteins react with the heat, and so the meat turns brown. “That was very insightful!” Eeshan said and continued, “But I have another question. The chapati that you are making- when you put it on the gas stove, how does it puff?"
You noticed that I mixed water while making the batter? When I heat the chapati, the water in the batter changes into steam, and tries to escape, thus making the chapatti puff.
I just learned about physical states and physical changes in school. So water changes form here, from liquid to steam.
That’s right, son! But cooking is more about practice than theory, so come on, start rolling chapatis!
What is the
‘Great Bear'?
The Great Bear is a constellation. Constellations are patterns formed by groups of stars. In fact, before the compass was invented, these constellations worked as guidelines for sailors and travellers to find their way. The North Star also known as the Pole Star or Dhruv Tara was very helpful to explorers. Ancient people used constellations as a calendar. They realised that certain constellations seemed to move as the seasons change. In reality, it is the movement of the earth which seems to change the position of these constellations. The Greeks and Romans named most of the constellations as long back as over 4000 years. Ursa Major or The Great Bear This constellation is noted to circle the northern sky all year through and its position changes during different seasons. It is believed that Zeus, the Greek God was jealous of a woman and her son and turned them into bears. He then cast the Great Bear and the Little Bear in the sky. The Little Bear is also known as Ursa Minor. Another story says that the Greek God, Zeus, was in love with a woman, Callisto. Zeus’s wife out of jealousy tried to hurt Callisto. Zeus to save Callisto from being harmed, turned her into a bear and placed her high up in the stars. The Great Bear has seven stars that make up its back and tail. These seven stars look like a long handled ladle and is known as the Big Dipper. At the end of the dipper bowl we see two stars that are referred to as pointer stars as they point towards an important star called the North Star.

The Bear And The Bees A bear once rambled from his home, Chanced through a garden trim to roam, Where, underneath the shelter of the trees, The farmer had his hives of bees. The bear loved honey. "Now," said he, "I'll rob your store-house, Master Bee. You'll buzz, and hum about my ears, But noise a brave bear never fears." So saying, bear over turns a hive, And straight the air is all alive, With angry enemies, who sting As well as buzz; and make bear sing, A lively tune of growls and roars, And cover him with smarting sores.
Pondering Corner What Makes the
Moon Shine at Night?
The surface of the moon is completely dark gray in colour. Because of its dark colour and a bumpy surface, the moon is able to only reflect 12% of the light that falls on it. The amount of light that bounces back on the earth depends on the orbit, time and place of the moon. The moon orbits around the earth. When the moon’s orbit puts it directly facing towards earth, it reflects a larger amount of light, thus making it shiny. This is mostly during a full moon night, when the moon is brightly lit up. When the moon is closest to the earth, it is called a super moon as it is almost 20% brighter than usual. As the orbit of the moon changes, the angle of the light changes and less light is bounced back on the earth. During the other stages of the moon only 8% of the light is reflected. The moon is slowly drifting away from earth. Thousands of years ago the moon was closer to the earth and our ancestors saw a brighter, bigger and shinier moon.
Tim and his family were a group of brown bears who lived on a mountain ridge surrounded by beautiful pine forests. Tim had never made any friends who weren't brown bears and he was adamant to make some amazing new friends. Early one morning, he packed himself a snack and set off to make some friends.

Facts About Grizzly Bears The first white explorer to see grizzly bears and to record them was Henry Kelsey in 1691, when he mentioned seeing ‘a great sort of bear’. When a female grizzly bear leaves her mother, she often sets up her home range quite close to her mother’s home range. Admiralty Island, in southeast Alaska, was known to early natives as Xootsnoowú, meaning ‘fortress of bears’, and is home to the densest grizzly population in North America. A major food source for grizzlies are army cutworm moths. They can consume upto 20,000 of these moths which cluster on rocks, after feeding on nectar in the early mornings. 10
